Ohio State resumes in-person tours
- April 26, 2021
- Ashley Grimmer
University Ambassadors is hosting a mixture of in person and virtual campus tours this spring after over a year of only virtual tours.
Gigi Kerber, a fourth-year in health sciences and captain of University Ambassadors, said the tours are currently only available to admitted students. Thirty guests are allowed on campus at a time with six visitors per tour group and each admitted student is allowed to bring one guest to the tour.
“In terms of the content, everything is the exact same as what we used to cover. They are still getting the same length tour, the same information and they are still walking in the same places,” Kerber said.

Ohio State graduation death: Coroner identifies woman who died in fall from Ohio Stadium
The Franklin County Coroner's Office has released the name of the woman who fell to her death during Sunday's spring 2024 commencement at Ohio State University.
Larissa Brady, 53, of Georgia, was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. Sunday at the scene outside Ohio Stadium by Columbus firefighters, the coroner's office reported Tuesday. Brady was identified by her fingerprints, the office said.
Latest news: Death at Ohio State graduation being investigated as 'apparent suicide'
The coroner's initial release does not say whether her death was accidental or intentional. Ohio State police do not suspect foul play nor that the fall was the result of an accident, university spokesman Ben Johnson said Tuesday in an emailed statement.
Who is Larissa Brady?
Brady's daughter was listed as a graduate being honored Sunday with a bachelor's degree at Ohio State, according to the university's 2024 commencement program .
"Ohio State is grieving the death of Larissa Brady, a family member of one of our graduates," Johnson said via email. "Our hearts go out to her family and friends during this exceptionally difficult time."
Ohio State and its police department have released little information about the death that occurred during Sunday's commencement ceremony .
Following the death, the university contacted all graduates and staff who volunteered at graduation to offer counseling services, Johnson told The Dispatch. Students can call 614-292-5766 and press 2 for immediate assistance after hours, while faculty and staff should call 1-800-678-6265, according to the university.
The commencement on Sunday continued uninterrupted as news of the death spread through the crowd.
University officials, commencement speakers — including social entrepreneur and OSU alum Chris Pan — made no reference to the death during the ceremony. Students leaving the graduation ceremony at the stadium walked past the area where Brady fell, which was still cordoned off by yellow crime scene tape.
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or a crisis and needs help, you can call or text 988 to reach the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline .

Shot fired during altercation at Eataly in River North, Chicago police say
A man was punched in the face and taken to Northwestern Hospital, the Chicago Fire Department said.
CHICAGO (WLS) -- A shot was fired during an altercation at the downtown Eataly marketplace on Friday morning, Chicago police said.
Police said it happened just before 9:30 a.m. at 43 East Ohio Street in River North.
ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch
A man and two other people, identified only as male, got into a verbal and physical altercation inside the marketplace, police said. That's when the man took out a gun, which went off during the struggle. No one was shot.
Police said the two people the man was arguing with took the gun and fled the scene before officers arrived.
The man who pulled out the gun suffered minor injuries and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition. The Chicago Fire Department said he had been punched in the face. No other injuries were reported.
Carolyn Murray, a customer visiting Chicago this weekend from Crown Point, Indiana, said she was inside the store when she saw customers and staff running out in panic.
"Just as we entered the building, we saw people rushing out. We knew some kind of chaos was going on, but desperate for our coffee, we went and got in line. Then, the police and the SWAT and the heavy-duty guns were going in," Murray.
Staff were temporarily held outside. An ABC7 crew said some managers were allowed back in a few at a time around 11 a.m.
Police appeared to be blocking roadways in the area, but all roads reopened by 10:30 a.m. The store itself was still blocked off at 11 a.m. as police continued to investigate.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.

Ryan Day, Ohio State Add Preferred Walk-On WR
Caleb spinner | may 12, 2024.
When it comes to receivers, there is no such thing as "too many" for the Ohio State Buckeyes .
The Buckeyes already have one of (if not the ) best receiver rooms in the country, featuring stars like Emeka Egbuka, Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. However, that did not stop head coach Ryan Day from continuing the hunt for more depth at the position.
The latest product of that search is Shawn Lodge, who announced his commitment to Ohio State following two years with the Presbyterian Blue Hose. A native of Akron, Ohio, Lodge brings several important skills to the table.
As already mentioned, Lodge is expected to serve part-time as a backup receiver. Lodge recorded 120 receiving yards on nine catches last season, and could function as a slot option similar to Xavier Johnson last season (the two are built almost identically).
The primary role of Lodge, however, is on the special teams unit as a kick returner. Lodge was the main return option for the Blue Hose, taking back a team-high 13 punts and second-best nine kicks last season.
Two of the biggest highlights of Lodge's career to this point came on special teams. Lodge opened the year with a 39-yard punt return against Virginia-Lynchburg, as well as a 22-yard kick return later in the season (while averaging 11 yards per attempt).
Ohio State appears to have found their return man for the coming season in Lodge. A man with many talents, there is no telling if Lodge will remain a receiver and returner, or if Day has something else up his sleeve.

Cicada map 2024: See where to find Brood XIX and XIII − and where they've already been spotted
For many Americans, the cicadas are here .
Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.
Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.
So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.
Are cicadas dangerous? Busting myths on the harmfulness of the noisy pests.
Are cicadas already out in 2024?
Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.
2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge
The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.
The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.
What is a brood?
According to the University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."
A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.
Why do cicadas make so much noise?
You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.
Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A woman who fell from the stands to her death during a graduation ceremony at Ohio State University last weekend has been identified as a woman whose daughter was receiving her diploma.
The Franklin County Coroner’s Office said the 53-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, just outside Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Sunday. The Columbus Dispatch reported the death was being investigated as an apparent suicide, citing coroner documents.
An investigation continues into how the woman fell from the stadium, which the school says is 136 feet (41 meters) tall, to the pavement below. However, Ohio State police do not suspect foul play and believe the fall was not accidental, university spokesperson Ben Johnson said Tuesday.
It happened around midday, near the stadium’s Bell Tower, as the last graduates were filing into the stadium. According to the commencement program, the woman’s daughter was among those graduating.
The commencement continued without mention of what happened, but some students and others at the ceremony were visibly upset after the fall. A spokesman said the university has contacted all graduates and staff who volunteered at graduation to offer counseling services.
