● A Haunted House in Osaka’s Shinsekai

As it gets warmer outside, I just want to get out and do something. I’ve been staying home for months because of Covid. Luckily, just the other day, I came across something interesting online—a car covered in blood in total darkness… So spooky, I just had to see this haunted house! I just wanted to experience something unreal. I was sure it’d be fun.

osaka ghost tour

Conveniently, while it’s a “drive-in,” you don’t need a driver’s license or your own car. And the admission to the haunted house is per vehicle—not per person—so going alone didn’t make sense. I called my friend, Yun, who’s also from my country.

Lee “Let’s go to a haunted house, Yun! You like cars, don’t you?” Yun “Hey, Lee! Yeah, I like cars. But I don’t like ghosts.” Lee “That’s okay. It’s all socially distanced and it’s at a nice hotel.”

I talked Yun into it and made a reservation online. They are open Friday through Sunday every week, but many slots were taken already. It must be popular. I booked us for a 9pm slot on a Friday—in honor of the movie “Friday the 13th.” Let’s go to the haunted house!!!!

* There is a part where the mask is temporarily removed for shooting.

● Horror at an Art Hotel

The Drive-in Haunted House is at YOLO BASE in Shin-Imamiya. I’d heard of YOLO BASE. It’s an employment training facility for foreign residents. They provide Japanese language training, cross-cultural experience including an English camp for Japanese students who want to but can’t study abroad right now, and various support programs for employment and overall life in Japan. I met Yun at Osaka Metro’s Dobutsuen-mae Station at 7pm. Yun had his usual gentle smile on his face despite we were on our way to see spooky ghosts. After about a 7-minute walk, we easily spotted YOLO BASE’s orange neon. They have a large parking lot, too.

The poster at the entrance gave a glimpse of what we were about to experience.

osaka ghost tour

Yun “The haunted house is at a hotel?? This poster is pretty creepy!” Lee “Don’t worry about it. It’s just a picture…”

osaka ghost tour

We were early but went ahead and checked in at the front desk. We even snapped a photo with the staff at the front desk. The ticket was spooky, too! I was excited.

● “Heart of the Dead” for Appetizer

We sat down while we waited—it’s good to relax a little before a frightening experience, you know. It was a nice, comfortable space—very artistic and roomy, equipped with Wi-Fi. I give it extra points because it was great for Instagram!

osaka ghost tour

If you get here a little earlier in the evening—before 8pm—you can even dine in at their stylish restaurant. We found “Heart of the Dead” on the menu. It looked gross but we had to try it! Heart of the Dead is actually warabimochi—wagashi traditional Japanese dessert made with warabi bracken starch—an authentic one from Kyo-nishijin Kasho Souzen, a famous wagashi shop in Kyoto. I recommend you eat it before the horror—you know, give yourself extra strength with warabimochi!

● The Terror Begins…

At nine o’clock, staff with a bloody mask waived at us. After a second look, I realized it wasn’t just the mask but her whole outfit was covered in blood! Lee “Here we go, Yun! Let’s do it!”

osaka ghost tour

The woman covered in blood led us and two other groups out of the hotel to the drive-in haunted house. She explained this was our last chance to change our minds and get out of this commitment. Then it began… Watching the prologue, I couldn’t help but hold my breath and started to regret I was there. Yun didn’t look too excited anymore, either…

osaka ghost tour

● You Can’t Escape from the Dead

Each group gets their own car. We got a blue one. It was very dark, and we really couldn’t see well. It was getting tense.

osaka ghost tour

The radio in the car made eerie sounds… It was, simply put, a terrifying 20 minutes. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you the details; it wouldn’t be fun. You’d just have to go on your own. But I can tell you this: It was, truly, a horror. It was too real—the ghosts, the zombies… We knew we were safe in the car, yet we were recoiled in fear the entire time. And, we screamed. Our scream was guttural—you know how you can’t really scream when you’re truly scared? It was that.

We couldn’t relax until the very end. Yun looked pale blue when we came out. I was emotionally drained.

osaka ghost tour

The quality of this drive-in haunted house was exceptional, with experienced actors who have performed in theatres and at theme parks. It was so real I might see those zombies in my dream later. It was frightening, but it was thrilling and exciting at the same time. I liked it.

The drive-in haunted house in YOLO BASE is a new type of haunted house that makes it easy to enjoy the entertainment in current environment. We never stepped out of the car and were attacked by zombies from outside. You can avoid 3Cs (Closed, Crowded, Close contact,) guaranteed. And the cars are disinfected and sanitized after each use.

The haunted house is so popular. It’s been booked fully every day after its opening, forcing them to consider an extension of its schedule. In fact, they just decided to extend it through the end of May! Literally, “there’s no escaping” from the horror at the drive-in haunted house. Do you think you can take it?

Osaka stole our hearts during our Japan adventure! Every moment in this vibrant city felt like magic.

What to do in Osaka at night

Here we share a list of the best things to do in Osaka at night.

Go night shopping

In the main shopping streets of Osaka, the stores stay open until late.

So, If you love shopping or you are looking to buy some Japanese souvenirs to take home, you will have plenty of opportunities to do so.

But you don’t need to be on a shopping spree to visit these Osaka night markets.  The shopping districts are just as much fun to wander around without a shopping list.  They’re lighted with colorful neon advertisements and it’s great to experience the lively atmosphere.

Here we share the 2 best spots to shop in Osaka at night.

The Glico running man at the Dotonbori canal in Osaka

The Namba district

By day, Dotonbori, the bustling main street, caters to every taste, but it truly comes alive at night, earning its place as one of Japan’s iconic landmarks.

As dusk falls, neon lights and billboards transform the streets into a mesmerizing spectacle, teeming with shoppers, families, and friends. Don’t miss capturing snapshots of the famed illuminated signs, such as the Giant Moving Crab and the Glico Running Man.

Explore an array of restaurants, shops, bars, and entertainment options.

We leisurely strolled the street, savoring the atmosphere and indulging in delectable street food, including the renowned melon pan bread, which we couldn’t get enough of.

Namba is the perfect spot to feel the vibrant atmosphere that we loved so much about Osaka.

Namba encapsulates Osaka’s lively essence, making it an ideal base. For those seeking accommodations amid the bustling energy of restaurants, bars, and nightlife, look no further than the Holiday Inn Osaka Namba. It’s the perfect hub for an unforgettable Osaka experience.

How to get there :

The nearest  subway station  is  Namba Station.  You can take the Midosuji line, Sen-Nichimae line, or Yotsubashi line to get here.

The closest  JR station  is  JR Namba station, it is the terminal of the Yamatoji line.

Shinsaibashi Osaka Japan

Go night shopping in Shinsaibashi

Shinsaibashi is right next to Namba.

This is another perfect street to do some night shopping and you can explore both in one evening as you can walk from Dotonbori to the Shinsaibashi shopping arcade.

The arcade starts at the famous Ebisu Bridge, one of the landmarks of Dotonbori, and runs the full length of the Shinsaibashi district.

Shinsaibashi-suji Street , the covered pedestrian street, is almost 2 kilometers in length. You will find high-end stores like Chanel and Cartier next to 100 yen shops where you can shop for souvenirs.

Most shops open around 10-11 am and close again around 7-9 pm. This gives you plenty of time to hunt for souvenirs.

Tired of shopping?  The arcade also houses lots of restaurants and bars to satisfy your hunger and thirst.

How to get there:

The main street starts right at the Dotonbori bridge and runs up to  the Shinsaibashi subway station . The Midsosuji and the Nagahoritsurumiryokuchi trains stop at this station.

The nearest  subway station  to the Dotonbori Bridge is Namba Station .  You can choose from the Midosuji line, Sen-Nichimae line, or Yotsubashi line to get here.

The closest  JR station  to the Dotonbori bridge is  JR Namba station,  it is the terminal of the Yamatoji line.

Wander around Hozenji Yokocho

Hozenji Yokocho is a well-preserved historic Edo area located in Minami, just next to Dotonbori.

The district is squeezed in between neon-lit Dotonbori and the modern mega-malls of Namba, but as soon as you enter the district it feels like you have been beamed back in time to the old Osaka.

The small and quaint Hozenji Temple is well worth a visit, certainly after dark when the lanterns are lit and create a magical and peaceful ambiance. It’s in this temple that you find the famous moss statue of Fudo Myo-o, a Buddhist spirit.

The statue became popular because it was the only statue to survive a heavy bombing raid during the Second World War.

Normally Fudo-Myo-O is represented as a scary appearance but this statue no longer looks scary now that it is completely covered with moss.

According to a famous story, an elderly woman threw water over the statue and made a wish.

Her wish came true and since then other people have been doing the same.

That led to the completely mossy statue.

At night the lanterns are lit which create a very magical atmosphere.

Things to do in Kyoto at night.

The popular Hozenji Yokocho alley runs North alongside the temple.

Walking through the stone-paved narrow alley should give you a good impression of how it must have been to live in Osaka a hundred years ago.

The alley is at its best after dark when the bars and restaurants have all lit their old-fashioned lanterns.

This is also one of the best places to eat in Osaka. Here you will find more than 60 restaurants and bars that serve local Japanese specialties such as Teppanyaki, Okonomiyaki and much more.

How to get here:

The nearest  subway station to Hozenji Yokocho is  Namba station. You can choose from the Midosuji line, Sen-Nichimae line, or Yotsubashi line to get here. From the station, it’s a 5-minute walk.

osaka ghost tour

Stroll around the Shinsekai district

The Shinsekai  area was developed before the war and remained largely untouched afterward. If you want to experience a truly retro Osaka ambiance, this is the place to go.

Things to do in Gion at night.

One thing immediately stands out in Shinsekai,  the large colorful, and grotesque signs of the many restaurants and bars.

Most restaurants and bars are open for lunch but it is better to postpone your visit a few hours as the district really comes into its own at night when the large neon lights and decorated figurines lit up the sky.

When you’re in Shinsekai you should try the traditional Kushi-katsu .

Originally the dish consisted of fried vegetables or meat on a stick. Over the years several new variants have appeared.

Some restaurants now have fish, eggplant, fruit, and many more gourmet Kushi-Katsu versions on their menu. Kushi-Katsu originated in Shinsekai and almost all restaurants and food shops proudly do their best to keep the tradition alive.

Some specialized Kushi-katsu eateries are even open 24 hours/day.

In Shinsekai you will also find   Spa World, a huge bath complex with a large number of onsen from around the world which are to be enjoyed naked and gender-separated. More about Spa World later in this Oska blog post.

The Shinsekai area is considered one of the more dangerous neighborhoods in Osaka. Don’t let this scare you, we never felt unsafe in Japan.  Shinsekai might be one of the less safe regions in Osaka but is still pretty safe compared to world standards.  That Shinsekai is considered unsafe says more about the general level of safety in Japan.

How to get there:

The nearest subway stations are Dobutsuen-Mae station in the South and Ebisucho station in the North.  The first is served by the Midosuji line and Sakaisuji line, the latter by the Sakaisuji line.

The closest  JR station  is  Shin-Imamiya  on the Osaka loop line and Yamatoji line.

Make an organized night walk in Osaka

One of the most fun Osaka night activities you can do is to take an organized Osaka night walk.

An organized night tour is highly recommended to explore the authentic nightlife in Osaka as there are a number of hidden areas, old backstreets, and markets that are not in the guidebooks.

We partnered up with Viator for these activities.  Viator is a reliable platform where you can book thousands of tours anywhere in the world.  We also like that it is very flexible and that for most of the activities they offer free cancellation.

Here we share the best Osaka night walks.

Osaka food tour

Osaka castle

Enjoy the night view of Osaka castle

Osaka Castle is a reconstruction of the original castle that was built in 1583.

The original castle was destroyed in a fierce battle in 1615.  Several years later, in 1665, it was destroyed again when it was struck by lightning and burned down completely.

This time it took until 1931 before the castle was rebuilt.

The current castle is a ferroconcrete reconstruction of the original one that used to be here several years ago.

It houses  an informative museum  about the castle’s history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Samurai who lived in this castle and was one of the most powerful men in Japan in his era.

Although it is closed after 5 pm it is beautifully illuminated after dark and the park that surrounds the castle is worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood.  It is perfect to take beautiful night pictures.

The castle can be visited until 9 pm during the sakura season.

The nearest subway station is  Tanimachi Yonchome Station.   You can get there with both the Tanimachi Subway Line and the Chuo Subway Line.

If you come  by train  you need to head to  the Osakajokoen station  which is conveniently located on the Osaka loop line served by JR.

Osaka Cooking Class - Experieat

Explore the Art of Japanese Cooking in a Live Class

If you want to learn more about Japanese food and how to prepare it yourself, you could also take a cooking class.

We did it ourselves and learned to make gyozas and ramen.

The food was delicious, it was one of the best ramen we had in Japan if I say so myself. 🙂  It was a fun experience.

It would have been better if we could recreate these excellent dishes at home but unfortunately, many of the ingredients cannot be found in our home country.

What we liked so much about the experience was that we learned a lot about healthy Japanese cuisine and its common ingredients. Even though we often asked more info about the things we ordered at the restaurants we never got such a good explanation as during this cooking class.

You can read our full story about our cooking class here.

Sunset From Osaka Station

Admire Osaka from above

Osaka has several observatories from where you can enjoy the beautiful night scenery of this bright city.

Get to the top of the Umeda Sky building

One of the best ways to see Osaka from above at night is from the Umeda Sky Building.

The 173-meter tall construction consists of two towers that are connected by the “Floating Garden Observatory” on the 39th floor.  A futuristic construction that will certainly draw your attention.

The observatory has 2 platforms, both offer amazing 360-degree views of the city.  The upper platform is an open-air deck while the lower platform has windows all around.

Tip: Dinner time would be an excellent time to visit the observatory.  The 39th floor houses a Chinese restaurant and a cocktail bar called Stardust.  On the 1st basement floor, you will find Takimi Koji, a food alley with over 20 restaurants, that replicates a nostalgic townscape of the Showa period.

Umeda building Osaka, Japan

Osaka station , the main JR hub in central Osaka, is the closest JR station.  7 JR lines stop at this station including the Osaka loop line, the Hida line, and the Hamakaze line.  The Umeda Sky Building is a 10-minute walk from Osaka station.

The closest subway station is  Umeda Station  on the Midosuji line.

Watch the sunset from Osaka station

Osaka Station offers an ideal vantage point for observing the sunset.

It is much more than just a station, it also houses shops, a sports club, and a movie theatre, and travelers can choose from a wide range of restaurants to satisfy their hunger before they hop on their train.

The station consists of  2 buildings  that are on either side of the tracks.  Both buildings have a rooftop terrace, in the Northern building the terrace is on the 10th and 11th floor and it is called the Healing Garden.

Enjoy beautiful sunset views of the Umeda Sky Building from the Healing Garden .

The Southern building on the opposite side of the station also has an observatory.

This one is called the Sun Plaza and it is on the 15th, 16th and 17th floor.

It has many small eateries and bars. Ideal to take a break while you enjoy the view of the Umeda skyline with a drink or snack.

Osaka station  is the main JR hub in central Osaka.  7 JR lines connect this station to the rest of Japan including the Osaka loop line, the Hida line, and the Hamakaze line.

The closest  subway station  is  Umeda Station  on  the Midosuji line.   To reach Osaka Station from the Osaka Bay Area you first take the Chuo line until Hommachi station where you change for the Midosuji line.

Enjoy 360° views from the Abeno Harukas Observatory

The Harukas 300 building is one of the last new additions to the Osaka Skyline and it currently is the tallest building in the city.

The 16th floor of the building houses the art museum and a small garden terrace.

The terrace is freely accessible to everyone who wants to get a free glimpse of the Osaka Skyline but these views pale in comparison to those from the Abeno Harukas rooftop observatory.

The Abeno Harukas Observatory occupies the 3 top floors, 58 to 60, of the building.  The observatory offers 360-degree views of the city and the 58th floor has an open-air plaza and eating area.

Make sure to visit the toilets during your visit to the observatory.  Some people call these the coolest toilets they have ever been to.  The toilets have windows from the floor to the ceiling so you can keep enjoying those great views at the loo.

The lower floors of the building, from the floor up to the 14th floor, house a large department store and several restaurants.

Tip: Those who can’t get enough of these magnificent views can book a room at the Marriott Miyako hotel which is located on the top floors of this building.

The Abeno Harukas Observatory is just a 2-minute walk from the Tennoji Station.

Osaka aquarium Tempozan Ferris Wheel Japan

Make a ride on the Tempozan Ferris Wheel

The Tempozan Ferris Wheel measures 112.5 m in height and that makes it the highest Ferris wheel in the city and the fourth largest in Japan.

The wheel is open until 10 pm and it is beautifully illuminated at night.

It’s a great place to enjoy the night view on Osaka Bay and Osaka’s skyscrapers.

Osaka aquarium Tempozan Ferris Wheel Japan

The Tempozan Ferris Wheel is located at Osakako Station on the Chuo subway line.  (take exit 1 or 2)

Enjoy an evening out

Go watch a ror comedy show.

Osaka is known as Japan’s comedy capital and since 2011 foreigners can enjoy a stand-up comedy show in English. The shows are being held every Friday and Saturday night.

This is a great way to learn more about Japanese culture during a great evening full of laughs.

ROR comedy club

Take the subway to Namba station. You can choose from the Midosuji line, Sen-Nichimae line, or Yotsubashi line to get here. Take exit 25. From here it’s a 4-minute walk.

You could also take the subway to Yotsubashi station on the Yotsubashi line. Take exit 2. From here it’s a 4-minute walk.

Another option is to take the subway to Shinsaibashi station on the Midosuji or Nagahori Tsurumiryokuchi line. Take exit 2. From here it’s a 6-minute walk.

Show your singing talent during a Karaoke night

Karaoke originated in Japan and is still very popular in the country.

Osaka counts various karaoke places. Roughly you have 2 types,  one is box karaoke where you rent a private room.

The other is karaoke bars, similar to what we know in Europe, where you can show your talent to the whole audience.

Bars often have one or more boxes you can rent for private parties.

If you like to sing or you want to have a great night out, you must definitely visit a Karaoke place while you are in Japan.

On Tripadvisor, you can find a selection of the best Karaoke places in Osaka.

Alcohol in Japan bar

Get a drink in a bar or go dancing in a nightclub

Osaka has a lot to offer in terms of nightlife and has plenty of bars and nightclubs where locals and visitors can unwind after a busy day.

Dotonbori’s promenade along the Dotonbori River is lined with bars and another popular go-to place for drinks is Hozenju Yokocho Alley.

You could also head to Uranamba, literally meaning the back streets of Namba, which is located on the eastern side of Namba station.

The area has a bohemian atmosphere as for years it has been home to many theaters. Youngsters have rediscovered the area and their arrival has led to an explosion of new trendy bars and eateries.

The most popular bars are found in the alleys that stretch out from the Doguyasuji Shotengai.

If you are looking for a more local experience you should definitely visit Ohatsu Tenjin Urasando, the narrow alleys house many restaurants, bars, and izakayas. It’s a 5-minute walk from Osaka or Umeda station.

Osaka’s nightclubs are mostly located in Namba and Kita.

On Tripadvisor, you will find a selection of the best nightlife in Osaka.

Relax at Spa World

Nothing is more fun than to pamper yourself from time to time.

Japanese knew this already a very long time ago, the country’s oldest onsen are supposed to be more than 3000 years old.

An onsen means hot spring.

Nowadays the term is protected, an onsen must be supplied from a spring with a water temperature of at least 25 degrees that also contains a minimum amount of certain minerals.

It is generally accepted that the country counts more than 27000 of such onsen and they’re spread out all over the country.

Baths that are supplied by heated tap water are called sento although sometimes the terms are incorrectly mixed up.

Onsen take a central place in the daily rituals of many Japanese.

The minerals in the water are supposed to offer healing benefits but that is not the main reason for their visit.

It is primarily a social affair where friends and family go to an Onsen instead of a bar.

Of course, they also offer relaxation after a stressful business day or a tiring day of sightseeing.

If you want to learn more about Onsen etiquette, take a look here.

Spa World is the perfect place to discover the Japanese onsen. It’s a huge bath complex with a large number of onsen from around the world which are to be enjoyed the Japanese way, naked and gender-separated.

During uneven months the men get to enjoy the Asian styled rooms and the women the European styled rooms.  During even months the roles are reversed.

Spaworld Shinsekai Osaka, Japan

Osaka’s nightlife is thrilling.  We were surprised by the continuous stream of people that flooded the major shopping streets after dark.

They do have something to offer for everyone.

You will find everything from bars and Izakayas over food trucks and small eateries that offer snacks for those who just want a quick bite to fancy restaurants with multi-course menus.

Osaka is a great city to discover the best of Japan’s bar and nightlife scene but even if you’re not hungry or thirsty the streets are fun to just do some people watching.

With this post, we hope to have inspired you to visit Osaka after dark.

Although Osaka is a wonderful city to explore during the day it comes truly alive at night when the neon lights are illuminated and the restaurants and bars are packed with people.

It would be a pity to not explore Osaka by night.

It’s easy and fun to do this on your own. If you book an organized night walk it the experience will even be educational and enriching at the same time.

Enjoy Osaka!

Supernatural Japan: Ghost Stories and Paranormal Hotspots to Visit

Author

The fascination with the unseen, the supernatural, and the macabre seems to transcend cultures and continents, finding its unique expression in each locale's folklore and traditions. In Japan, a country known for its seamless blend of antiquity and modernity, this fascination is particularly compelling. The country's ghost stories, or 'Kaidan,' and numerous paranormal hotspots have not only been sources of spine-chilling tales whispered around the glow of lanterns on a quiet night, but also critical components in the grand tapestry of Japanese cultural heritage.

This article embarks on an exploration of this intriguing, occasionally unsettling, aspect of Japan's rich cultural panorama. By delving into well-known ghost stories, dissecting the mythology around the nation's supernatural entities, and guiding you through some of its most famed paranormal hotspots, we intend to provide both thrill-seekers and culturally curious readers with a comprehensive guide to Japan's spectral landscape. Whether you're a fan of the macabre, a devotee of folklore, or a traveler seeking destinations off the beaten path, join us as we step into the world where the veil between the natural and supernatural is said to be at its thinnest.

The Ghost Stories of Japan: A Tapestry of Fear and Fascination

In the heart of Japanese culture lies a rich and captivating tradition of ghost stories known as 'Kaidan.' These spectral narratives, far from being mere chilling tales for dark winter nights, play a vital role in Japan's cultural and folkloric framework. Dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868), Kaidan was often told in a game-like setting, a Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, where participants would gather, light 100 candles, and tell ghostly tales, extinguishing a candle after each story. With each snuffed-out light, the room would progressively darken, and the boundary between the real and supernatural world would purportedly blur, ushering in an eerie atmosphere of suspense and anticipation.

The Chilling Triad: Yuki-onna, Rokurokubi, and Kuchisake-onna

Within the expansive library of Kaidan, some stories have etched themselves into the collective consciousness, becoming symbols of Japan's ghostly lore. "Yuki-onna" (The Snow Woman) is one such tale, painting the chilling picture of a beautiful yet deadly spirit who preys on unsuspecting travelers during intense snowstorms. The tale of "Rokurokubi" introduces us to a deceptive creature, seemingly a normal woman by day, but at night, she reveals her true form by extending her neck to disturbing lengths to feed. ‍

Paranormal Image

Equally unsettling is the story of "Kuchisake-onna" (The Slit-Mouthed Woman), a disfigured spirit who covers her grotesque mouth with a cloth and dooms those who cross her path with a terrifying question. These stories, unsettling and fascinating in equal measure, offer a glimpse into the eerie corners of Japan's folkloric tradition, ensuring that the country's ghostly heritage continues to thrill, teach, and mystify.

Japan's Supernatural Creatures: Yokai, Yurei, and Beyond

Japan's folkloric landscape is densely populated with an array of supernatural creatures, Yokai and Yurei being two of the most prominent kinds. Yokai is an umbrella term that encapsulates various entities, from benign tricksters to malevolent spirits, each embodying distinct aspects of human flaws or societal concerns. ‍

Paranormal Image

On the other hand, Yurei are spirits of the deceased, often portrayed in white clothing, with a hitaikakushi (triangle of paper, a funeral rite) on their foreheads. They are believed to be individuals who have passed away with strong earthly attachments, hence their lingering presence in the mortal world. Both Yokai and Yurei hold significant roles in Japan's cultural fabric, often serving as vehicles to impart moral lessons, societal values, and explanations for unaccountable occurrences.

The Famous Trio: Kappa, Tengu, and Onryo

Each Yokai and Yurei has a unique tale to tell, and some of them have been immortalized in Japan's folklore. Take "Kappa," for instance, a type of Yokai, aquatic in nature, known for its distinct bird-turtle like appearance, and its obsession with cucumbers and sumo wrestling. Although usually harmless, Kappas can pose a threat if disrespected or provoked. "Tengu," another famous Yokai, are mountain and forest dwelling entities, often depicted with human and avian characteristics. ‍

Paranormal Image

They are recognized as both protectors and disruptors, often linked to the practices of yamabushi (mountain ascetics). The world of Yurei introduces us to "Onryo," vengeful spirits that come back from the purgatorial realm due to wrongs done to them in their life. Their sole intent is to inflict damage on the living, mirroring their own suffering. These stories passed down through generations, add fascinating depth to Japan's supernatural folklore, with these creatures often seen in pop culture, from manga to movies.

Paranormal Hotspots in Japan: Not for the Faint-hearted

When it comes to paranormal hotspots in Japan, the Aokigahara Forest, known as the "Sea of Trees," is arguably the most infamous. Nestled at the base of Mount Fuji , the dense vegetation and eerily quiet atmosphere of Aokigahara lend it a spectral quality. Its reputation as a popular spot for suicides has intensified the forest's eerie aura, with many claiming to have seen ghostly apparitions or felt an overwhelming sense of sadness within its depths.‍

Paranormal Image

In stark contrast to the natural surroundings of Aokigahara stands the man-made monolith of the Hakone Yama Hotel. Once a bustling retreat for vacationers, the hotel now lies abandoned, its grandeur fading into melancholic dilapidation. Visitors and locals often share stories of unexplainable phenomena, including ghost sightings and the feeling of an unseen presence. The hotel's eerie ambiance, combined with these chilling anecdotes, make it a must-visit site for paranormal enthusiasts.

The Ghost Tower and the Cursed Well: Sosei no Tou and Okiku's Well

Another remarkable paranormal site in Japan is the Ghost Tower (Sosei no Tou), an apartment complex located in Hokkaido . Despite its seemingly innocuous exterior, the tower is known for its series of mysterious fires and unexplained incidents. Eyewitness accounts of ghostly sightings add to the building's haunted reputation, making it a fascinating point of interest for those interested in the supernatural.

Paranormal Place in Japan

Finally, Okiku's Well at Himeji Castle tells a tragic tale of deception, heartbreak, and revenge. According to the lore, Okiku was a beautiful servant who was falsely accused of losing valuable dishes and was subsequently killed, her body dumped into the well. Today, it is said that Okiku's spirit haunts the well, and on certain nights, a ghostly figure can be seen rising from the well's dark depths. These haunted locations, each carrying a story steeped in history and supernatural folklore, add a thrilling dimension to the exploration of Japan's rich cultural landscape.

Travel Tips for the Supernatural Explorer

Planning a trip to Japan's haunted hotspots can be an exhilarating experience, but it's important to embark on this supernatural journey with a few key considerations in mind. Respect for local customs and beliefs is paramount; after all, these tales are deeply woven into the societal and cultural fabric of Japan.

Paranormal Place in Japan

Also, prioritize safety, especially when exploring secluded areas like the Aokigahara Forest. It's also worth noting that visiting these sites during the off-peak season can enhance the experience, as fewer tourists equates to a more immersive atmosphere. Lastly, remember to keep an open mind; these places are not just about paranormal activity, but also about history, culture, and nature.

Guided Spectral Tours and Beyond the Haunting

Many locations offer guided tours, which can be an excellent way to explore these places safely while gaining deeper insight into their history and associated legends. These tours can be found and booked through local tourism offices or trusted online platforms. On these tours, expert guides will often share fascinating stories, enriching your experience beyond what you might discover on your own.‍

Paranormal Image

Moreover, it's essential to appreciate these locations from multiple perspectives. Aokigahara Forest, for example, is renowned for its unique vegetation and natural beauty, while Himeji Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning architecture and gardens. The Ghost Tower, in contrast, is a symbol of Japan's rapid urban development and the societal issues it grapples with. While the macabre tales add an intriguing layer to these locations, their historical and cultural significance make them worthwhile destinations for any traveler, whether they believe in ghosts or not.

Exploring the supernatural elements and haunted sites in Japan offers a captivating detour from the standard tourist experience. These chilling tales and paranormal hotspots are not just the stuff of eerie legends; they serve as intricate threads that add a sense of enigma to the beautiful cultural tapestry of Japan. They remind us that beneath the vibrant cherry blossoms, the bustling city streets, and the serene temples, Japan carries a timeless folklore rich with supernatural entities and age-old ghost stories.

Whether you're an adrenaline junkie chasing the thrill of the unknown, a cultural explorer, or a curious traveler, this supernatural voyage promises an adventure that is as enlightening as it is spine-chilling. Every haunted locale and every ghost story invites you to step into a different world, offering a perspective that is as intriguing as it is mysterious. So, as we pull the curtain on this haunting journey, we leave you with a sense of intrigue, inviting you to experience the unseen, the mystical, and the unexplainable that dwells within the heart of Japan.

10 Hidden Gems in Osaka

One of the reasons I love Osaka so much is that everywhere you go, around almost every corner, there is something new to discover. It doesn’t matter if it’s down one of the many back streets, or even in the basement of a building, there’s so many things to do in Osaka that are hidden just out of sight! Maybe you've already been to Osaka before and ticked off the main attractions; now it’s time to go off the beaten path and really get to know this. It’s the unique experiences in Osaka that have the ability to steal the heart of any visitor, things that you just can’t get in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan, like our undying love of street food or our almost unlimited amount of super mysterious izakaya. In this guide to Osaka’s hidden gems I’m going to reveal a few of the amazing local things to do in Osaka, because that’s what makes this city so special. If you’re searching for these secret treasures in Osaka, you’ve come to the right place. If Osaka is the “Nation’s Kitchen” I’m about to reveal the top ten things that would be kept at the back of the bottom drawer; hidden and rarely visited, but once you discover them, they’re hard to say goodbye to!

Walk down Hozenji Yokocho

Walk down Hozenji Yokocho

Hidden in the super modern district of Minami you will find one of my favorite secret spaces in Osaka; Hozenji Yokocho. As you walk down its cobbled streets, past mysterious moss-covered shrines and sleepy traditional restaurants, perhaps a restaurant owner contemplatively practicing Uchimizu (the traditional sprinkling of water from a bamboo bucket) to cool the pavement down, it might seem as though you’ve traveled back in time to Osakan streets of long ago. For me, this area totally sums up Osaka, you have this ancient place just a few minutes’ walks from Dotombori, which is probably the most futuristic-looking place in Japan, maybe even the world! The epitome of old-world Japan, a playground for camera lovers, the street is not the only attraction here. Some of the most authentic among Osaka’s hidden restaurants and bars are tucked away here, with some of Osaka’s specialty foods waiting to be tried, especially in the okonomi-yaki restaurants which offer easily some of the tastiest food in the city.

Discover Japan's Oldest Temple

Discover Japan's Oldest Temple

As a tourist coming to Japan to visit the intricately ornate and historical temples, it must be quite overwhelming to know where to begin; after all, there are so many to choose from! Osaka is no different, but it does have one temple that you absolutely can’t miss; Shintennouji. Many people would say that visiting this ancient site is one of the most unique experiences in Osaka, and I’d have to agree, simply because it’s the oldest temple in the whole of Japan! Although this is a pretty popular spot with tourists, I always thought that it never seems to get the proper attention that a place with that title of the first Buddhist temple in the country deserves. As you might expect, the temple grounds are very tranquil, although to avoid crowds I’d recommend coming early in the morning so that you can see the temple exactly how it was meant to be.

Eat at Okonomiyaki at Botejyu

Eat at Okonomiyaki at Botejyu

High up on my list of favorite hidden gems in Osaka, and a frontrunner runner for the best spot to experience top-quality food in Namba, Botejyu is my number one recommendation. There are so many hidden restaurants in Osaka that just don’t get the attention they deserve, and Botejyu is right up there with the best! A quaint, family-run affair turned restaurant chain that has been creating delicious okonomiyaki for over sixty years. Botejyu offers a singularly authentic okonomiyaki experience; in fact it was even the first restaurant in Osaka to start serving it; it doesn’t get more authentic than that, and after sixty years of producing the dish you just know that it’s going to be good. Okonomiyaki is essentially a traditional base of cabbage and batter; apart from that, the ingredients are up to personal preference, really allowing the dish to live up to its name which translates to “what you like”. Usually, with the addition of vegetables and some kind of sauce, which varies between restaurants, the dish is typically whipped up right in front of you; dinner and a show! You can find the original restaurant right in the heart of the popular Namba area, and for authentic Okonomiyaki that’s definitely where you need to go.

Walk Through the American Village

Walk Through the American Village

If you really want to begin discovering Osaka off the beaten track, then you’ll have to start leaving the main districts such as Namba and head into other parts of the city. The American Village is one of the hidden gems in Osaka that I tell everyone to go and see, it’s such a weird and wonderful place and you could spend a whole day exploring it! For over forty years this area of the city has been the home of Osaka’s vibrant youth culture, lending a creative flair to the entire area. Sure, it’s about as American as you can get in the heart of Japan, but with an edgy vibe that continuously morphs and evolves with the new generations, America-Mura are kept distinctly unique. The graffiti-covered streets are apparently home to over two-thousand shops around these streets too, so if you want to find a whole load of American branded clothing, used records or even just want to hang out at the Hard Rock Café, then you’ve come to the right place! If you're a sucker for the macabre and happen to be in the mood to lounge about in a quirky cafe, throw on your best goth attire and head to Anamune ; a hospital themed cafe full with anatomy posters and body parts, where your milkshake is likely to come in a beaker, your waiter is wearing a lab coat and your cake looks like a science project.

Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda

Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda

Instant noodles have become so prolific in modern society that it’s almost guaranteed that at some point in your life – while you might not have sampled it – you have certainly come across the cultural phenomenon of instant cup noodles. Whether the treat your mom fed you after school, or your student-days staple, cup noodles are a small but concrete part of modern life – but did you know that instant ramen was born right here in Osaka? Momofuku Ando, the father of Nissin Food Products, invented instant Chicken Ramen – the very first kind of instant ramen – in 1958, forever changing the face of ramen and establishing the instant ramen industry. At the Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda you can learn all about humble instant cup noodles, and get to make your very own flavor of instant ramen; down to the packaging! The museum is dedicated to instant ramen and cup noodles, as well as its creator and founder. Located in Ikeda within walking distance of Ikeda Station on the Hankyu-Takarazuka Line, the museum is free to visit and is a must-see when on the hunt for unusual things to do in Osaka.

Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church

Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church

You might think you know Christian churches, seeing there is about one on every block in Western countries, but I’m pretty sure you’ve never seen a church quite like this one. Being a Christian church in a sea of Buddhist temples is in itself unique, but the very architecture of the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church is fascinating. Built by architect Tadao Ando, the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church is often called the church of light because of the way the stern cement front of the building is sliced into four quarters by a cross that allows natural light to pour in, creating an ephemeral beam of sunlight which in the interior, in the shape of the sacred Christian emblem. Even the agnostic or entirely atheist among visitors will feel a reflexive hush when stepping into the somber interior of this almost entirely concrete church. A unique work of architecture that, with its calming atmosphere, offers a quiet sanctuary from loud and bustling city.

Step Back in Time in the Misono Building

Step Back in Time in the Misono Building

To pick just one highlight of the vibrant Ura Namba District for this list of non-touristy things to do in Osaka was always going to be hard, but I think the Misono Building is easily the winner. This is a complex that was built back in the 1950s for drinking, eating and socializing, however very little seems to have changed in the intervening decades! There are still countless tiny restaurants and bars that belong in a different era, especially down in the basement which I think is the best place to go. You really could spend all night bar hopping around this floor alone and yes, this is definitely one of the most unique things to do in Osaka. This is the true Osaka off the beaten track experience at its weirdest and most wonderful, trust me.

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

About 40 minutes from the center of Osaka is the award-winning distillery of Yamazaki whiskey, known for its single malt whiskeys which have won many awards across the globe. Far beyond the whiskey, the value of a visit to the Yamazaki Distillery lays in the serenity of the region, a break from the chaotic city living of Osaka that will come as a welcome relief to nature lovers. Surrounded by lush greenery the quiet and serene district is known for its quality water, which – being a key ingredient to good whiskey – naturally lends this area to whiskey making. At the distillery you can witness the entire process from distillation – done in beautifully ornate pot stills, where the distillation process begins – to aging in old wooden barrels, and finally to bottle; where you will be able to not only taste the fine produce of the distillery, but purchase bottles from the impressive store to take home with you. Tours of the distillery are 80 minutes long, and are available in English and French. These can – and should, to avoid disappointment – be booked in advance for the price of 1000 yen.

The Expo’70 Commemorative Park

The Expo’70 Commemorative Park

The monolithic Tower of the Sun statue alone makes a visit to The Expo’70 Commemorative Park worthwhile. Like something out of a Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli movie, the tower stands at a grand height of 70 meters, with a base that spans 20 meters in diameter. The wingspan – because the strange, multi-faced statue has two wings flanking either side – stretches a staggering 50 meters across. The tower features three faces; two faces on the front, and a face in the back representing the future, present and past. Perhaps the oddest thing about the statue; a fourth, most eerie effigy called “Sun of the Underworld” was once located in the basement of the statue, but has since gone missing without a trace. Housed at the core of the tower is the Tree of Life – almost 41 meters tall and presents an artistic interpretation of the evolution of life from the early life forms like the amoeba through to man. The park itself was built on for the Japan World Exposition in 1970. A gargantuan 260 hectares, the park houses facilities originally set up for the Expo’70, such as the Japanese Garden and the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, forests and seasonal flower gardens. Breathtaking during sakura season, the park is known for embracing the natural environment and offers a relaxing day out.

Explore the Tondabayashi District

Explore the Tondabayashi District

Just a 10-minute walk from Tondabayashi Station will see you enter a town frozen in time. One for history buffs and foodies alike, Terauchi town is an independent settlement that was built around the temple of Jodo-Shinshu mainly during the Middle Ages. In Tondabayashi City, the traditional cityscape of Terauchi Town still has all the features of its early medieval days, from the ornate architecture to the pristinely manicured zen gardens. Start off your hours of sightseeing by grabbing a map at the Jinaimachi Community Center, before spending easy hours strolling down the cobbled streets, lined with ancient rubble-roofed houses, stylish retro cafeś and pretty little shops.

GHOST ultra lounge Details/Osaka Nightclub

After entering and paying the entrance fee, the big screen and state-of -the art set up will catch youre eye. The club's capacity is only approximately 400 people and is something you wouldn't call very spacious but for this reason all natural stone was used in the floor and walls and the latest LED lights give off the feeling as if you were inside a jewelry box.

Not only is there a DJ booth but there is also a VJ booth where you can also enjoy just watching the videos. The sound, atmosphere, and videos give off a feeling of being in a dream-like state and will make you forget that you are in Osaka's American village. The club was name after the legendary car ``Rolls Royce Ghost`` and following that name has the image of ``adult`` and elegance. First time club goers should not get the impression that this is normal for a club. GHOST ultra loung just excels the rest.

The music played is of course the latest hits but also Hiphop, Reggae, and a wide range of genres, also a lot of famous artists are invited to come play. Especially, there are many international DJ's and many of the current trend of music are played at GHOST ultra lounge. There is image of a mix of ``street`` and ``luxury`` and a common sound of all mixes through EDM played that you won't be able to experience at any other clubs in Osaka. The image of urban hip hop is displayed entirely throught out the club and is certainly makes it cool hip hop.

Six Spirit-Sighting Spots in Tokyo

What will bite, when you wander at night?

Serena Ogawa

A hot, sticky breath on the back of your neck as you walk down a quiet street during the witching hours. Stilted steps that creep up behind you, but when you turn around there is no one to be seen. A shiver of cold sweat racing down your spine and up your arms, leaving only goosebumps in their wake.

Fear elicits a shocking thrill and for seekers of the other side, Japan can be an alluring playground of poltergeists. Especially in summer with a test of courage ( kimodameshi ) being a popular way to cool down by creeping yourself out.

There are some horrifically hair-raising hotspots for all manner of the creepy in Tokyo. Why not pick out the perfect moonless night and find some ghosts and ghouls on your own?

Toyama Park and the Disembodied Screams

We start our supernatural list with a place with a gruesome and truly haunted history. With the skeletal remains of more than 100 people unearthed in Toyama Park, the place certainly has the facts to back up the story. So what is the story? Before the end of WWII, Toyama Park was the dumping site for Unit 731—a biological weapons development division that was elbow-deep in lethal human experimentation. Responsible for hair-raising war crimes not for the faint of heart, a Unit 731 nurse revealed in 2006 that she had helped bury bodies and...other parts on the site.

Today, people have reported violent sobs heard from atop Hakoneyama in the eastern section of the park; and even sightings of Japanese will-o’-the-wisps ( hitodama ). A trek up the Hakoneyama hill’s stairs just past midnight makes for the perfect chance to find a lamenting specter.

Access: A 20-minute walk north of Shinjuku Station. Head for the eastern section of the park for maximum heebie-jeebies.

The Lonely Souls of Sunshine 60

What’s so scary about a skyscraper called Sunshine 60, you may ask? Well, for starters, the building covers the location of the once-infamous Sugamo Prison and its execution grounds. The prison was dismantled in 1971 Sunshine 60 finished in 1978—after a series of delays and “accidents”. Since then, there have been countless sightings of fireballs after dusk and the aforementioned hitodama, which are said to be a person’s soul after it leaves the body.

Are the executed coming back to exact their vengeance? Or do they just wish for one final chance to plead their case to the living? Either way, the area has some history to it. Although the only reminder of the prison now is an engraved stone praying for “eternal peace”. If you can’t find any spirits, you can at least enjoy Sunshine 60’s observation deck.

Access: Exit 35 from Ikebukuro Station. Look for signs to Sunshine City, but beware, you may have to battle past hordes of the living to get there.

Akasaka Weekly Mansion’s Haunted Rooms

Want to stay somewhere in Tokyo that’s convenient, affordable, and haunted? Look no further than Akasaka Weekly Mansion (now Hotel Mystays Premier Akasaka). Famous as one of Japan’s most haunted buildings, the spirits at this stay location have a history of being aggressively hands-on toward guests. And it’s no wonder, with an unsavory history of kidnappings, captive prisoners, suicide, and murder the house was demolished and turned into a weekly hotel, which has since been turned into an overnight hotel.

What can you expect when you check in? There have been dozens of reports of figures standing over guests as they sleep; lights turning off without warning; temperature drops; even reports of hair being petted or brushed while one person slept. Perhaps the scariest of all was a woman who was dragged across the room by her hair and woke up the next morning, her body covered in marks. Will you make it until check-out time?

Access: An easy 4-minute walk from Akasaka Station to your lovely haunted hotel room!

Spirits of Sendagaya Tunnel

Classic Japanese horror fans will love this one! Sightings of a stringy-haired woman in this tunnel have been a long-time wonder. Sendagaya Tunnel was hastily constructed and passes under a cemetery. The tunnel was finished just in time for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and since then has become a hotspot for hauntings.

For the real thrill, why not use the pedestrian walkway and go for a stroll during the witching hours. Reports range from being followed by a long-haired, bloodstained woman to temperature drops inside the tunnel to “things” falling on top of cars and creating a loud sound but no damage. Where will this ghostly tunnel lead you?

Access: A 15-minute walk from Sendagaya Station will land you at the mouth of this tunnel to the other side.

Shakujii Park and the Legend of Princess Teruhime

Lovely by daylight, Shakujii Park turns sinister at night. In 1477, the leader of the Toshima clan committed suicide here rather than admit defeat to an invading force. Soon after, his grief-stricken daughter, Teruhime, drowned herself in the lake. The invading force was so struck by this tragedy of her lost beauty and youth that they made a burial mound for her called Himetsuka.

The legend has spawned some serious spookiness over the centuries. Lovers who meet by the lake are doomed to drown in Teruhime’s footsteps. And at night, there have been reports of sightings of a woman’s face under the surface of the water. Head to the waters or up to the Himetsuka mound and ancient pine tree to try to meet the princess herself, if you dare.

Access: A creepy 15-minute walk from Shakujii-Koen Station through the park to reach the Himetsuka mound.

Ireido’s Inky Past

If local legends aren’t quite enough to sate your appetite for the supernatural, it’s time to visit Ireido in Yokoami Park. It has a tragic past full of woe; after the Great Kanto Earthquake, refugees flocked here, only to be burned alive when the fires followed their tracks. If that weren’t enough, the park later served as a makeshift crematory for more than 35,000 corpses.

The Ireido itself is a cavernous Buddhist-style memorial hall constructed in 1931. This “hall of repose” was used to placate the souls of the firebombing victims of WWII. Beware the graphic photos and melted objects on display are not for the faint of heart but serve to remind us of life’s fragility. Passerbys have heard countless uncanny sounds and there are several eye-witness accounts of phantom fires and wispy figures.

Access: Just a one-minute walk from Ryogoku Station and you'll find yourself at this park with a tragic past.

Ghastly Tips to Enjoy Ghosts

  • Take a friend—Remember, you don’t need to run fast, just faster than your friend.
  • Bring a camera—Maybe you’ll capture proof of the other side?
  • Wear proper footwear—You might need to outrun a horde of zombies.
  • Light your path—Who knows what might grab for your feet?
  • Be safe—No matter what you see, or don’t, it’s all for fun at the end of the night.

Pleasant screams and happy hauntings!
