3-Day Kruger Safari Tours

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s great safari destinations. Extending over 19,485km²/7,523mi², it is one of the largest national parks anywhere on the continent, and home to 150 mammal and more than 500 bird species. When it comes to the Big Five, Kruger is a key stronghold for both species of African rhino, and it also supports immense herds of elephant and buffalo, and some unusually relaxed big cats. A 3-day Kruger safari provides a great opportunity to get a good look at South Africa’s most popular national park, and to enjoy a sampling of its varied wildlife. Be warned, however, that once you have visited Kruger and caught the safari bug, you may well want to return one day for a longer safari.

6 Questions About 3-Day Kruger Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

3 day safari south africa

Is 3 days enough time for a trip in Kruger National Park?

“Absolutely. Three days is sufficient to get a decent feel for Kruger’s landscapes and to see a good selection of its wildlife, though it will restrict you to exploring one small area of this vast park. That said, if it is possible to spend longer than 3 days in Kruger, I would give it serious consideration. Additional time in the park will allow you to explore it more thoroughly, and every extra game drive improves the odds of seeing elusive species, such as leopard, cheetah, African wild dog and rhino.”

Is it better to fly or go overland to Kruger?

“As a rule, it’s more efficient to fly, especially for a short safari. Kruger is about five hours’ drive from Gauteng (which includes Johannesburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport), so the return drive will eat into your safari time. That said, many Kruger tours do start and end in Gauteng, and this has its advantages too. Driving is generally cheaper, and you will see some interesting countryside en route. And, with an early start, you’ll be in Kruger for lunch. Kruger is further from seaside destinations such as Durban, Cape Town or the Garden Route, so traveling overland isn’t a realistic option unless you’ve enough spare days to treat it as a road trip. One situation where driving into Kruger is clearly preferable is if you’re already staying close by, for instance in Mbombela, Hazyview or Hoedspruit. It also makes sense to drive if your Kruger safari is part of a longer road trip through the likes of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) or northern KwaZulu-Natal. If you decide to fly, several different airports service Kruger, and your best choice will be influenced by where you’ll be staying. The busiest flight hub is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which lies outside the national park, but offers good access to southern Kruger via Numbi Gate (40km/25mi) or Phabeni Gate (60km/36mi). Useful alternatives include Skukuza Airport, which stands inside the park close to Skukuza Rest Camp, and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, which is near central Kruger’s Orpen Gate.”

What accommodation can I expect?

“Accommodation options are wide open on a 3-day tour to Kruger. More than a dozen rest camps offer the choice of camping or staying in a comfortable self-catering bungalow. Some safaris stay outside the park, at one of several lodges that lie close to an entrance gate. These accommodation options include simple backpacker lodges, smart chain hotels and owner-managed boutique properties. In terms of pure value for money, accommodation options outside the park are generally preferable. Personally, given the choice, however, I would always stay within the park. This allows you to enjoy the memorable experience of being in the bush at night. It also leaves you better placed for game drives in the early morning, when carnivores are most active. At the top end of the range, several private game lodges stand in concessions within Kruger, and many more can be found in the various private reserves that share open boundaries with the national park. These all-inclusive lodges tend to be small and luxurious, and to place a strong emphasis on quality wining and dining. In private reserves and concessions, guided game drives in open 4x4s are the norm, and you’re likely to enjoy better big cat sightings than you would on public roads.”

Which animals am I likely to see on a 3-day Kruger safari?

“On any tour to Kruger, you stand a good chance of seeing all the Big Five and many other iconic African savannah creatures. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and hippo are all but certain, together with a varied selection of antelope including wildebeest, greater kudu and impala. On a 3-day safari, lions are very likely, as are spotted hyenas and jackals, but leopard and cheetah are a little less likely. Kruger is an important stronghold for both rhino species: the larger and more placid white rhino is common and very likely to be seen over the course of 3 days, but you would be very lucky to see the more scarce and secretive black rhino. Kruger supports excellent and varied birdlife and you can expect to see heavyweights, such as ostrich, southern ground hornbill, saddle-billed stork and various vultures and eagles.”

How do I avoid the crowds in the park?

“The best way to dodge the crowds in Kruger is to avoid the public area south of the Sabie River. The majority of rest camps are concentrated in this southern sector, and it’s also the main area utilized by day safaris. The payoff is that southern Kruger offers the most reliable wildlife viewing in the park, and your best chance of spotting all the Big Five on a 3-day safari. Within Kruger’s southern sector, traffic is heaviest around Skukuza, the largest rest camp, so a good compromise is to stay at smaller rest camps such as Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge or Malelane. Another good compromise would be to stay in central Kruger, staying at a rest camp such as Satara, Olifants or Letaba. Central Kruger also offers good wildlife viewing, but it is seldom as crowded as the far south. The area north of Letaba is even less crowded, but wildlife viewing tends to be slow, so it is not recommended for first-time visitors. If you are not restricted by budget, think about staying at a private reserve bordering Kruger (for instance MalaMala Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Game Reserve or Klaserie Nature Reserve), or a concession lodge within southern Kruger (these include Shishangeni, Lukimbi and Rhino Post safari lodges). These exclusive variations on the Kruger experience take guests on guided 4x4 safaris through areas that are rich in wildlife but closed to the general public. Kruger attracts a high volume of domestic visitors, so it’s best to avoid long weekends and local school holidays.”

How much does a 3-day safari in Kruger National Park cost?

“The price of a 3-day Kruger safari depends on whether you stay inside or outside the reserve, and whether you camp, stay in budget rest camps, or go for more luxurious accommodation. Typically you will be looking at around US$650 per person at the lower end of the price scale, US$900 to US$1,000 in the mid-range, and US$1,200 to US$1,600 or upwards for a more luxurious and exclusive experience in a concession lodge or private reserve. Kruger is also well suited to self-drive visits, which usually work out more cheaply than guided safaris. The negative of self-driving is that you’re unlikely to see as much wildlife as you would with an expert guide, but it does offer a greater sense of autonomy.”

3 day safari South Africa

South Africa is one of the very few places on Earth where you’re able to tick off all of the Big Five in one day, never mind a 3 day safari here! Visitors will be blown away by the size and number of elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes and much more you’ll find in the wild.

After a long day of exciting game drives in Kruger National Park or Phinda reserve, sit back and relax with an evening cocktail on the timber balcony of your lodge overlooking a watering hole. South Africa truly has some of the continent’s finest food, dining, accommodation and service.

The best 3 day South Africa Tours

Price of a 3 day south africa safari.

Expect a starting price of $650 per person for a 3 day South Africa budget camping tour, going up to $900 per person for a mid-range lodge tour. Luxury tours start at around $1,300 per person.

Safari packages to South Africa span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 3 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is a 3 day safari in south africa sufficient.

3 days is plenty to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of South Africa. The number of days needed to properly do a South Africa safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

A longer period of time would be better, however each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. On a 3 day trip you can even break up the drive to parks like Kruger with an overnight stay in Phinda Game Reserve or MalaMala Private Game Reserve .

Alternatively you can spend all of your time in the famous Kruger National Park . With full days at the reserve, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic safari destination including a full-day dusk-to-dawn game drive that will include lunch at one of the picnic spots.

Morning and evening game drives are rewarding as well, but on a full day you can get further into the reserve, away from the more-crowded areas. Overall, 3 days is a good amount of time for a safari in South Africa if it is part of a larger tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal if possible.

Accommodation offered on a 3 day South Africa safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible South African landscape and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation South Africa has to offer. The accommodation here is stunning with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Of particular note include the renowned Jock Safari Lodge in Kruger where guests can experience an old world safari with luxury suites, private decks, plunge pools and sightings from the lodge.

Go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 3 day South Africa safari

The most popular option for a 3 day South African safari is Kruger National Park. Most visitors fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) near Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to Kruger airport.

Kruger NP is a popular self-drive destination. You can also hire a car in Johannesburg and drive to the park. The park has nine entrance gates, the closest of which, Numbi Gate, is 375km/235mi from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. The drive takes at least four hours.

With nearly 2 million hectares of unrivaled habitats, Kruger offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the very best in Africa. All of the continent’s iconic safari species – elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, zebra and so much more.

Visitors can find over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African Buffalo, 2,000 leopards and 2,800 lions and it is also regarded as the best place in the world to see a leopard.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is another incredible wildlife destination located in KwaZulu-Natal, the reserve is a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest. Another notable feature is its location, in close proximity to the unspoiled beaches and spectacular coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.

Animals on a South Africa safari?

You’ll find just about everything in South Africa! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find Wildebeest, Diceros, Impalas, Dik-diks, Impalas, giraffes, hyenas, African wild dogs and many more.

Endlessly intelligent and iconic, African elephants continue to capture the hearts of travelers to South Africa. Kruger National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing in general and the scenic KwaZulu-Natal parks are best to see rhinos. In Sabi Sand, the main focus is on seeing the Big Five and it is famous for its habituated leopards.

Other animals to be viewed on a South African safari include hyenas, giraffes, hippos, zebras, African wild dogs, crocodiles, wildebeest, kudu, warthogs, springbok and cheetahs.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, some  280 kilometers north of Durban, is home to over 84 mammals and 350 – 400 bird species as well as the Big Five and cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hyenas and many more iconic species.

How much spending money do I need for a 3 day South Africa safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $300 for a South Africa safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. South Africa safaris can be more expensive than their continental counterparts due to the higher costs of accommodation and food.

What animals will I see on a 3 day South Africa safari tour?

Visitors on a 3 day South Africa safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 3 day South Africa safari?

The best time to visit South Africa is from May to September, as the cooler winter months in the north bring superb conditions for viewing big game. With an overall moderate climate, South Africa is however considered a great year-round safari, wine and beach holiday destination.

Testimonials and Guest Reviews

All Around Great Kruger Safari Experience

I did the 2 night, 3 day camping safari. The guides, camp, food, tents, drive times all exceeded my expectations. The guides are really knowledgeable and friendly. The camp has a welcoming atmosphere, laid back flow with excellent chefs. There is a shop where you can get anything you need. I don't recommend adding on the night drive it is hard to see anything.

Excellent organisation, expert guides

Our tour of Kruger, Swaziland and Hluhluwe was a wonderful holiday. The organisation was superb and the expertise of the guides was first class. It is hard to absorb everything we saw and learned, from baby elephants and lion cubs to wild dogs, over 100 bird species and many, many rhinoceros families. The guides, particularly Olivier, were patient, knowledgeable and clear

Trip of a Lifetime

Just arrived from a trip of a lifetime with Kruger wildlife safaris. It has been a dream of mine to do a safari since my grandfather introduced me to the world of travel when I was young. From the moment your picked up in the private transfer van & taken to the camp that's located in southern Kruger national park I knew this was going to be a great experience.

Kruger National Park 3-Day Safari | What to Expect

Since the park was established in 1898, it has become the cornerstone of nature conservation in South Africa.

  • The park boasts about 140 mammals, from the Big Five to leopard tortoises and rhino beetles.
  • Around 500 bird species—including the fish eagle, hornbill, and various vultures and owls—can be spotted throughout the park.
  • You could try your luck at spotting one of the 110 different reptile species, like snakes and lizards.
  • There are also 330 types of trees in the park.

The Kruger National Park is about as large as Wales, covering just under 20 million hectares of land. However, the animals that live here are not the only drawcard. There are private lodges, public campsites, and activities in the surrounding areas that will make any 3-day Kruger safari fun and family-friendly.

While bumbling through the bush, you’re also invited to visit some archaeological sites where African culture and the history of ancient San and Zulu settlements are preserved.

  • You can visit Thulamela in the north
  • View the Prospectors Grave close to Skukuza Camp
  • Masorini Archaeological Site, 11km from the Phalaborwa gate

3 Days in Kruger National | Itinerary

Planning a Kruger National Park itinerary can be exhausting. You’ve got to figure out accommodation, transport, food, activities, and much more. To make your life a little easier, we’ve set out a guide to spending three days in this magical park.

3 days in Kruger could be an addition to your South African adventure or a holiday on its own. To squeeze every drop of excitement out of your trip, you might want to consider taking a drive from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park.

The distance from OR Tambo Airport to Kruger National Park is 263 miles, a 5-hour drive. Some tours like this full-day tour offer a pick-up and drop-off service from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park . If you’re driving yourself, you might want to check out some of the reserves around Johannesburg as an introduction to your ultimate Kruger National Park trip.

No two game reserves are exactly the same. Visiting one or two of them might introduce you to some cool creatures that you might miss going to only one park.

elephants-walking-down-road-in-krugar-national-park

Johannesburg has some beautiful places like:

  • Pilanesberg (Just over 3-hours drive from OR Tambo International Airport) has a stunning tour with pick-up from Johannesburg
  • Moreleta Nature Reserve (30-minutes drive away from the airport)
  • Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve (35-minutes from the airport)

After a drive out of Johannesburg and through parts of the Kruger National Park, you deserve a delicious cocktail (or mocktail). Get out some board games and let the competition begin. Or you might want to start a fire and get some marshmallows roasting as a sweet treat to end off a pretty spectacular day.

Today is the day that you wake up to birds chirping, breakfast cooking, and hopefully, some lions roaring near your camp or perhaps your 5-star Kruger lodge . You’ll have an entire day to cruise through the park.

impalas-in-green-grassland-south-africa

Once you’re dressed and ready at (literally) the break of dawn, you’ll head out for yet another game drive. Morning safaris are quite fruitful as many Kruger National Park animals are out and about preparing for their day ahead of the harsh midday sun. Unlike humans, animals always look cute when they wake up — go and see for yourself.

Hopefully, your trusty guide will be able to spot some tracks and lead you to the animals you’d like to see. All the guides are well clued up on the way things work out in the bush, so do not hesitate to nerd out and ask them as many questions as you can think of.

If you’ve opted for a full-day safari , you’ll most likely refuel at some of the restaurants and shops before heading out for the second part of your day.

Midday usually brings some of the animals out to the watering holes for a quick drink. Get your Instagram stories ready for a few pics of the hunters and the hunted sharing the same body of water.

On your third day, you can sit back and relax. There’s still time to fit in an extra afternoon safari . One day around the block is not always enough, and you might see some other animals that you hadn’t seen the day before.

Once you’re back home, you can take out your book and relax. Or, you can head down to the swimming pools at the Berg-en-dal camp, Olifants, Orpen, Lower Sabie, or Skukuza Camps and catch a tan under the African sun.

After your trip to Kruger National Park, you’ll feel relaxed, humbled, and happy that you’ve taken the time to visit.

Kruger National Park Safari Prices

For a self-drive day trip, you’re looking at around $27 for entry into the park. This allows you the entire day within the gates and use of basic public facilities.   Camps in Kruger park range from around $22 to $550, depending on the season, accommodation type, and the number of guests.

There are also some Kruger National Park all-inclusive packages which vary from one-day trips to three-day trips. You can mix and match to perfect your ideal itinerary.

How to Get to Kruger National Park

Traveling to Kruger National Park might seem confusing at first if you’re from elsewhere but South Africa. We promise it’s simple. We’ve got everything you need to know about how to get to the Kruger National Park.

Distance from Cape Town to Kruger National Park

While a Cape Town safari will whet the whistle, the ultimate trip from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park is almost 1800 kilometers worth of traveling.

In Cape Town, you’ll find yourself in the southernmost part of the country with some incredible South African vacation attractions. If you’re driving, it will take you just under 19 hours to arrive at the Kruger National Park. The fastest route along the N1 National road takes you through the Karoo and once you get closer to Johannesburg, you’ll see a lot of farm towns.

It’s worth noting that South Africa will feel a lot slower than what you might be used to. So, this is the time to unplug and enjoy the scenery that this magnificent country has to offer you.

buffalo-in-grassland-south-africa

Once you get past Bloemfontein (about 621 miles away from Cape Town), you’ve got two choices before reaching your final destination. You could either drive through bustling Johannesburg, or take the road less traveled and see some of the lesser-known farm towns like Bethlehem, Standerton, and Barberton.

Once you reach Kruger Park, you’ll most likely enter through the Malelane Gate on the southern side of the park. It’s only about 24 to 30 miles away from the Skukuza Main Camp (distance varies based on the route taken).

If you prefer to fly, you could set off from Cape Town International Airport to Johannesburg, or to one of the airports in the surrounding area such as Hoedspruit Airport or Nelspruit Airport. This trip takes you roughly two and a half hours.

Kruger National Park Airports

If you’re hoping to spend as little time on the road as possible, a flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg will have you reach the park in about an hour.

There are three major airports serving Kruger National Park visitors. Each one—except for the Kruger Park Gateway Airport—is about an hour’s drive away from the main entrances to the park.

  • Kruger Park Gateway Airport is situated just outside of the park and is closest to the Phalaborwa gate. Once you’re on Letaba road, you’re only 5 minutes away from the gate.
  • You can also choose to land at the Hoedspruit Airport and drive for about an hour before reaching the Phalaborwa gate. It’s worth noting that there are a few other nature reserves along the way, such as Lekkersmaak Game Reserve, Olifants North, Olifants River, and Tshukudu Game Reserves.
  • The final option is the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (previously known as Nelspruit Airport).

The Panorama day trip takes 7 hours out of your day to show you around the world’s third-largest canyon, the Blyde Canyon.

This trip starts from Hazyview, which is 18 minutes away from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger National Park. While you journey to the south of the park, beyond it is the Great Escarpment. It takes you around three beautiful lookout points: Three Rondavels, God’s Window, and Wonder View.

Thereafter, you’ll be delighted to find the Lisbon and Berlin waterfalls after stopping off for lunch at one of the Graskop stops (note that food is not included in the package).

This tour only costs you about $100 for the day and is suitable for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors or an old mining town that has been preserved since the gold rush days in the 1800s.

Map of our 3 Day Kruger Park Safari

The 3 day Kruger Park safari departs early morning from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, or we can pick up from the surrounding airport hotels within a 5km radius from the airport. Enjoy a scenic drive to the Kruger National Park in a comfortable, air-conditioned minibus.

At the Kruger Park entrance gate, we switch to an open safari vehicle. Game viewing begins as soon as we enter the gates.

While making our way to the camp, we search for wildlife and you can expect to see a large variety of animals, including giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, elephants, buffalo, kudu, impala and various other species. We will either check in at our camp first and then head out immediately for an afternoon game drive, or continue our game drive from the moment we enter the park and only check in at our camp by sunset.

Dinner is the first included meal, and may be prepared by your guide (all our guides are excellent chefs too!) If the weather permits, we usually eat outside and enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbecue). Alternatively, we may use the camp restaurant or our catering team. We try and cater to most dietary preferences, as long as we know about them in advance.

We overnight in the main rest camps in the southern part of the Kruger National Park. The exact choice of camp will depend on availability. The camp is safely fenced with an electric fence and features a swimming pool, restaurant, curio shop and viewing deck overlooking the river.

Accommodation is in a standard air-conditioned bungalow with mosquito screens, air-conditioning and small en-suite bathroom. The accommodation is rather basic but perfectly comfortable, cleaned and serviced daily. Most units have either two or three single beds per room. If availability permits, it may be possible to upgrade to luxury bungalows, or even to luxury 4-star hotel accommodation if you prefer that (at extra cost).

Today you will get an early wake up call from your guide. We enjoy some coffee and head out for our morning safari drive, looking for the Big Five and any other wildlife we may come across.

Early morning is the best time for game viewing. We may see hyenas returning to their den, or baboons playing in the sun, or a herd of elephants coming to the river to drink. Sometimes the nocturnal predators such as lions or leopards are still active early in the morning.

Of course, on a Kruger Park safari you need a bit of luck, particularly of you have only 3 days on safari. Every drive is different and part of the excitement of a game drive is not knowing what you will see.

A hearty brunch will be enjoyed a bit later in the morning, either at a picnic site or at one of the other camps, or perhaps back at our own camp. Brunch (breakfast and lunch in one) is a feast and will either be prepared by your guide, or by our catering team.

The game drives on this safari are flexible. We do not stick to a fixed time limit or daily schedule, like the private safari lodges do. Our only limit is the park rule that requires us to be back in camp by sunset. If everyone feels fresh, we may stay out on game drive for most of the day, to cover more distance and see as much as possible in the short time we have.

Alternatively, we may head back to camp after the morning drive, relax a bit or take a nap during the hottest part of the day. You can browse in the curio shop, relax at the swimming pool or watch animals from the deck overlooking the river. During the afternoon, we head out on another game drive.

As the day cools down, the animals become more active and this is again a good time for game viewing.

Along the way, depending on the route, we may stop at a lookout point, game viewing hide or picnic spot where you can stretch your legs a little.

We return to camp at around sunset and enjoy dinner around the fire or in the camp restaurant.

On our last morning we head out on our final safari drive, in search of any wildlife that may have eluded us thus far.

The Kruger National Park is over 2 million hectares in size, and the animals roam around freely. Unlike a zoo, there are never any guarantees as to what animals you might see. Our game viewing stats show that we see most of the iconic species such as elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, warthog, hyena and various antelope species on every safari. Even on our 3 day Kruger Park safari , short as the time is, we usually see an abundance of wildlife. On 90% of our Kruger Park safaris we also see at least one or more of the big cats (lion, leopard or cheetah). A bit of luck is required to see cheetahs and wild dogs — we see them quite often but not on every safari. While no specific sightings are guaranteed, what is guaranteed is that our guides will make every drive interesting and enjoyable, no matter what specific animals you get to see.

After breakfast, it is time to pack up and start making our way toward the exit gate, as we come to the end of this 3 day Kruger Park safari. We switch back from the open safari vehicle to our air-conditioned minibus for the drive back to Johannesburg.

We usually arrive back in Johannesburg between 5 - 6 pm, depending on traffic. Please keep this in mind when booking onward flights. We drop off at the airport or any of the surrounding airport hotels. Due to traffic congestion, we do not pick up or drop off in Sandton, Pretoria or other areas of greater Johannesburg, outside a 5km radius from the airport.

Important Notes:

  • The 3 day Kruger Park safari is our shortest Kruger National Park safari, ideal for those with very limited time, but who still want to experience the wonderful wildlife of one of the world's most famous game reserves.
  • This is an affordable small group safari with a focus on maximum game viewing in a short time, not a focus on luxury accommodation, spa treatments, etc.
  • Travelling by road from Johannesburg takes approx. 5 - 6 hours to Kruger Gate. It is also possible to fly. We can arrange return or one-way flights if you prefer to fly, at an additional cost (you can fly to Nelspruit/MQP or Skukuza/SZK).
  • Check out our list of scheduled departures below. Click on any departure date to enquire for that date.
  • You can also request a custom departure or private departure on any other date, at additional cost.
  • Please Book Early! Short notice availability on all our Kruger National Park safaris is very limited.
  • Please check out our reviews on TripAdvisor. Many guests who have done both a 3 day Kruger Park safari with us as well as a private lodge safari, report that they saw far more wildlife in the Kruger Park with us, compared to the private safari lodge. And of course, our guides are the best in the business!

Kruger Lodge Experience (3 days) Tour

Kruger Lodge Experience (3 days)

The tour guides and the tour itself were spectacular. The guides did their best to keep us entertained and knew exactly what they were doing. They went the extra mile to show us the big 5 which we really appreciated. The organization of intrepid and their customer service, on the other hand, was very poor. They were not responsive in a timely manner. They weren't willing to accommodate for minor inconveniences from the customer. For example, my crew asked to be picked up from a destination that was 5 min away from the original pick up location. Keeping in mind that we were supposed to be at that location at 5:30am, intrepid should have accommodated for us but it took 5 different people contacting them separately and several back and forth to come pick us up. Tourradar was also responsible for this mess because they acted as a middle man instead of directly allowing us to deal with the issue. These and other types of details that seem simple caused a lot of negative experiences in the tour. Aside from that, seeing the animals and the actual tour were priceless.

We had an amazing 3-day tour to the Kruger National Park. It was a great mix between wildlife, beautiful landscapes and South African history. We did an extra game drive in the park that was definitely worth it. Jakes is a great guide with a huge knowledge about the history of South Africa and the flora and fauna in and around the park. We can highly recommend doing a tour with him.

I am also immensely happy with the welcoming nature of everything one I came across!

Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Visit Shamwari Private Game Reserve for a 5-Star Luxury Safari Experience In South Africa

O f all the experiences people seek when visiting South Africa , going on safari easily ranks at the top of the list. While a one-day safari may be best for shorter trips, the best way to enjoy the full safari experience is during an overnight stay. There are several game reserves to choose from, but Shamwari Private Game Reserve is by far the ultimate luxury choice.

In Eastern Cape near South Africa’s sixth largest city, Gqeberha, Shamwari has operated as a game reserve since 1992. Nearly 62,000 acres of land are available for the many species of animals, birds, flora and fauna that once called the land home.

7 Luxury Lodge Experiences To Choose From

Shamwari offers guests a choice of seven luxury lodges, each with its own distinct character and appeal. The options range from intimate seclusion to family-friendly accommodations. For more adventurous guests, there is also a tented Explorer Camp, set around a koppie, deep in the bush.

Long Lee Manor is a redesigned lodge with spacious high-end luxury suites, an infinity pool and several dining spaces on the property. Riverdene is the top pick for family-friendly safari stays with a kids on Safari program available. Bayethe, Eagles Crag and Sindile are all fitting for couples, solo or friends getaways, each offering a different luxury outdoor experience. Sarili Private Lodge, a five-bedroom accommodation, is the premium luxury pick for special occasions with small groups of family and friends.

The Luxury Is In The Details

From your greeting upon arrival to your suite’s amenities, no expense is spared in this 5-star stay. Warm hand towels and savory warm shooters await you and your guests as you step into your lodge of choice. The staff at Shamwari ensures you don’t have to lift a finger.

Game drives are also designed for maximum comfort. Early morning game drives can be chilly depending on the time of year, but the team has plenty of accessories to make sure you stay warm. Heated water bottle pouches and blankets for each guest are provided by your game ranger. Spotting the Big 5 just got a lot fancier. Whether you want morning coffee in the bush or a proper sundowner following an afternoon game drive, the Shamwari team can oblige your request.

Each lodge also has a spa for wellness services with the exception of Riverdene and Sarili. Guests in all lodges have access to in-room treatments or the option to indulge in self-care services at Long Lee Manor Spa.

The best part of this luxury safari experience is the many perks that come inclusive with your stay. All meals including the famed Boma Dinner and locally selected beverages are a part of your experience. With activities, such as game drives and bush walks, included, there’s plenty to do on any given day at the reserve. You can also enjoy a complimentary visit to the wildlife rehabilitation center or Big Cat Sanctuary, Born Free.

Boma Dinners: The Culinary Highlight of Shamwari

Boma dinners are one of the best dining experiences you’ll have during your visit to Shamwari. Every third night, with favorable weather conditions, lodge guests gather for dinner under the African night sky. Around a fire pit surrounded by lanterns, the Boma dinner is South Africa’s braai experience. Known as a South African BBQ, a braai entails grilling food over hot coals and is the perfect way to end a day of exciting game drives.

Enjoy your preferred evening cocktail or beverage as the Shamwari culinary team serves a multi-course menu of fresh, unique dishes. From starters to dessert, you’ll explore local flavors in the cozy Boma setting as the fire crackles in the background, an undoubtedly dreamy safari night.

Resorting Wildlife Native To The Area

Once an area abundant in wildlife, the migration of man resulted in the killing of most of the original wildlife in the area. Shamwari is on a mission to restore the wildlife native to this region, bringing back Cape vultures and spotted hyenas.

Anti-poaching teams patrol the reserve to secure the land and more importantly the safety of animals that call its borders home. Ultimately, Shamwari aims to ensure its wildlife population has sufficient space, food and water to thrive while managing the balance between predator and prey species.

Unlike some private reserves, Shamwari maintains its standard of not interfering with the natural order of the plants and animals on the property. That means you’ll never go off-roading in the pursuit of an animal spotting which is good news for the animals and the flourishing flora and fauna within their habitat.

A Safe Haven For At-Risk Wildlife

Aside from the luxury amenities and services available upon request, Shamwari is actively working as a safe haven for rescued and injured animals of varying needs. Two sections of the property house its rehabilitation and sanctuary facilities. Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries is where you can find animals that should have been born in the wild, but because they weren’t, can never be released into the wild. Animals from circus entertainment, for example, may end up calling Born Free home one day.

Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, on the other hand, provides aid to animals from the wild who need assistance getting back on their feet. The rehab center helps to rehabilitate and care for sick, injured, abandoned or orphaned animals under the care of a professional veterinary team. Once these animals have been nursed back to health, they are released back into their natural habitat.

Shamwari is as much wildlife conversation as it is a luxury vacation, making it a feel-good option for safari experiences in South Africa. Every detail of this private safari is more than a cut above anything you’ll find at larger national parks. You can not only avoid the crowds of other reserves, but also dine and explore the outdoors with premium amenities only a request away.
