How to visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls in Morocco: 16 things you need to know

This article explains how to get to the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakesh independently (by public transport or with your own car) or with a tour. It also explains how to hike the trail around the Ouzoud waterfalls and what you need to bring on this trip.

A lot of people imagine Morocco to be a vast barren desert.

Before I came here I also thought that finding lush forests and waterfalls in this country would be nearly impossible.

It’s true that the southern part of the country is quite arid. There are beautiful sand dunes in Merzouga and the canyons near the Todra gorges are really fun to explore.

The northern part of the country, however, is much lusher than I had initially imagined it to be.

The whole area near Chefchaouen is full of green forests and it’s also a place where one can visit the lovely Akchour waterfalls .

When Cynthia and I were in Marrakesh and we heard about the Ouzoud waterfalls, we realized we absolutely had to visit them. Together with Imlil, the Ouzoud waterfalls are the perfect day trips from Marrakesh .

The city was becoming overwhelmingly busy and we needed to take a trip to the countryside to get away from the crowds for a while. We thought the waterfalls would be a quiet place to enjoy nature but we couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Ouzoud Waterfalls is the second tallest waterfall in Africa. It’s a popular touristic destination and one of the most visited and photographed natural sites in Morocco!

So I’d like to start this article with a warning: do not expect to be alone there and do not expect these waterfalls to be as quiet as the Akchour waterfalls near Chefchaouen .

These are the crowds at the Ouzoud waterfalls during the low season…

We started looking online to find information on how to get to the Ouzoud waterfalls by public transport .

What we found out is that first, we’d need to take a shared taxi from Marrakesh to a small town called Azilal and from there another one to Ouzoud. We’d have to get back to Marrakesh the same way by waiting for the shared taxis to fill up and then head back.

Getting there from Marrakesh and back by public transport would cost around 300 MAD per person. It would also eat up a large chunk of our day.

When we found out that we could go there with a tour for 500 MAD (for two), we decided to go with this option instead. We’d be going there directly and wouldn’t waste time hopping from one transport to another.

I also asked the tour operator if we could walk around the Ouzoud waterfalls independently and if there wouldn’t be any hidden costs (see scams in Morocco ).

Our tour operator told us that we would be totally free to visit the waterfalls but when we arrived there, we quickly realized it wasn’t the case. A guide was waiting for our group far away from the official entrance of the site.

He went on saying that it was impossible to visit the waterfalls independently and that each member of the group would have to pay him 3 euros at the end of the tour for his services.

The driver of our van was on the scam with him as he had dropped us off far from the entrance.

Because I spent a lot of time in Morocco and I   learned Moroccan Arabic , I was well aware of what was going on. Cynthia and I managed to leave the group and we explored the area around the falls by ourselves.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to avoid this scam. I’ll also explain how to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls independently by public transport, as part of a tour group or with your own car.

I will also tell you exactly what you should expect from a trip to the Ouzoud waterfalls and what you should bring there.

A few things to know before you visit the Ouzoud Falls

1. can you visit the ouzoud falls independently and do you absolutely need a guide.

There is no need for a guide to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls. There is only one path that takes you from the top of the cascades to the bottom and vice-versa.

If you visit these cascades with a tour group from Marrakesh, there might be a local guide already included in the final price.

I would suggest verifying this with the tour operator that you buy the trip from beforehand to avoid being scammed .

The waterfalls are very easy to visit alone and I would advise doing so if you don’t want to have to follow a group for hours. The paths are easy to follow and do not require the assistance of someone to show you the way.

From the entrance of the site, take the left path downhill. It will take you down a cemented little road which is lined with small shops and restaurants.

From there you can continue all the way to the bottom of the waterfall where you’ll find a few cafes and if you’re lucky, some Berber monkeys.

2. Is it safe to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls?

The waterfalls are relatively safe to visit. The path is well marked and it’s almost impossible to get lost. A few parts that overlook the waterfalls, however, could be dangerous, especially near the top of the great cascade not too far from the entrance of the site.

The falls are very high (about 110-meter) so I would advise treading on the paths and the cliffs that surround them with caution. I’m sometimes a bit scared of heights myself and wouldn’t lean too close to the edge of the falls.

Be careful while walking on the edge of the cliffs above the falls…

While I was there I couldn’t help but notice teenagers taking the most dangerous selfies ever while leaning above the 110-meter drop!

Be careful while visiting the Ouzoud waterfalls and avoid getting too close to the edge of the rocks overlooking the tallest cascade.

3. What’s the best time of the year to visit the Ouzoud Falls?

The Ouzoud cascades can be visited the whole year-round. It’s much busier during summer but that’s the best time of the year to go if you want to swim in the pools at the bottom of the falls.

There is more water during winter and usually a lot fewer tourists, so if you don’t mind that it’s too cold to swim, winter is probably the best time to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls.

4. How much does it cost to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls?

There is no entrance fee for the Ouzoud waterfalls but if you want, you could always hire a local guide to show you around (although it’s absolutely not needed).

A guide will charge around 30 MAD per person if you are visiting with a group of friends or 100 to 150 MAD if you are alone.

A quick tip : The restaurants near the waterfalls are not too expensive but if you want to travel around Morocco on a budget , I would suggest bringing some snacks with you.

5. Do Moroccans speak English at the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Almost all the guides and the shop owners at the Ouzoud waterfall speak a bit of English. There is no need to worry about them not understanding you or vice versa. However, a big part of the population still speaks only Arabic and Berber.

Visiting the Ouzoud Waterfalls independently

1. driving to the ouzoud falls with your own car.

The Ouzoud waterfalls are located 157 km from Marrakesh and it takes about two hours and a half to get there by car. If you have your own car or if you are renting one , you will totally enjoy the drive there.

As you leave Marrakesh and approach the area around Ouzoud, the landscapes will completely change.

You will go from a very flat landscape to a much more mountainous terrain. The temperature will also become a lot cooler and the hills will seemingly become covered with more and more trees as you approach the falls.

To get from Marrakesh to Ouzoud, you will have to drive towards the northeast on highway N8 until you reach highway R208. Once you reach the R208 continue towards the village of Tanant and from there to Ouzoud.

I would advise driving with caution as you approach Ouzoud. There are a lot of kids that play on the roads in the villages near the cascades.

On the way there we also saw a lot of children and teenagers that were selling fruits and nuts on the side of the highway. They can sometimes jump out into the road without notice so drive carefully.

• Parking at the Ouzoud waterfalls

If you have your own car or if you are renting one, it will be much more practical to park it directly at the entrance of the site rather than far away.

There are a lot of places where you can park your car near the cascades but it will cost between 10 and 20 MAD to park your car there for the day. You can pay that small fee directly to the parking attendant.

• Where can you rent a car in Marrakesh to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Instead of wasting tons of time from your day to try to find a good car rental agency in Marrakesh , you could rent a car here . Renting a car in Morocco is relatively easy if you go to the right place straight from the start.

2. How to get to the Ouzoud waterfalls by public transport (shared taxi or bus)

There are a few different ways to reach the Ouzoud waterfalls by public transportation. You could take a shared taxi from Marrakesh to Azilal and then another one to Ouzoud.

You could also take a shared taxi or a bus very early to the city of Beni-Mellal and then take a shared taxi to the waterfalls from there.

How to get to the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakesh by shared taxi (Marrakesh-Azilal-Ouzoud)

A good option to reach the Ouzoud waterfalls is to take a shared taxi from Marrakesh. You can take a shared taxi from Bab Doukala and it will get you to a village called Azilal not too far from the falls.

A shared taxi from there to Azilal should cost around 50 MAD per person if the taxi is full (6 people) when you leave.

Some taxi drivers don’t like to wait until the taxi fills up before they leave so you may have to pay a bit more. If you don’t want to wait for the taxi to fill up, you could also pay for the remaining seats to leave even earlier.

Once you arrive in Azilal, you’ll have to take a second shared taxi.

The taxis from Azilal to Ouzoud are a bit cheaper (about 25 MAD per person) and once again you could pay for the whole taxi to get to the cascades faster. If you’d pay for a whole taxi from Azilal to Ouzoud, it would cost around 150 MAD.

HOw to get to Ouzoud from Marrakesh by bus and shared taxi (Marrakesh-Beni-Mellal-Ouzoud)

Another option to reach the Ouzoud cascades is to take a bus from Marrakesh to Beni-Mellal and then to take a shared taxi from there to the waterfalls. This option, however, is the one that takes the biggest amount of time and it also costs a lot more.

I would only advise this option if you are interested in combining your visit of Ouzoud with a visit of Beni-Mellal and make it into a two-day trip.

You can take a bus from Marrakesh to Beni-Mellal with the two main bus companies in Morocco, CTM , and Supratours or with a local bus at the central bus station of Marrakesh.

3. Hitchhiking to the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakesh

Hitchhiking in Morocco is very easy and super fun. Most people who stop are super friendly and might want to invite you to their homes or to the restaurant for a meal.

I would consider hitchhiking to the Ouzoud waterfalls a good option but you should try to start as early as possible in Marrakesh. You’ll also have to find the exit to highway N28 that goes towards Beni-Mellal.

Hitchhiking from Marrakesh to the Ouzoud waterfalls could end up taking more than a day because there isn’t much traffic on the highways linking the two cities. Bring a good tent if you want to camp in the gorgeous mountains along the way.

Going to the Ouzoud Falls with an organized tour

Being part of a tour group is probably the most popular way to reach the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakesh. A lot of different companies in Marrakesh offer tours to the cascades and their prices tend to vary a lot.

1. How much is an organized tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls?

The price for organized tours to the Ouzoud waterfalls starts around 275 MAD per person.

This includes the ride to the waterfalls and back in a comfortable minivan but it doesn’t include the price of the local guide or food near the cascades.

You can book such a tour in restaurants and cafes all around Jemaa el Fna square in Marrakesh.

2. What should you expect from an organized tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls?

If you book a tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls, you’ll save a lot of time that you would have otherwise spent in finding public transport to get there.

You can expect a smooth ride in a very comfortable air-conditioned minibus and a few stops for refreshments along the way.

The pick-up will be directly at your hostel or hotel in Marrakesh or at the Jemaa el Fna square in the morning. Most tours will provide you with an English or French-speaking driver. Some tours will include a local guide at the falls in their price while others won’t.

You should discuss this beforehand with your tour operator. The tours offered online already include the fare for the local guide. Not all the tours include lunch so you should either bring snacks or have money for the restaurants near the falls.

Although the paths in Ouzoud are very easy to walk on, we suggest bringing a good pair of walking shoes or some sandals . Also, bring some sunscreen and don’t forget your camera .

3. Is it worth taking an organized tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Taking a tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls is worth it as you’ll save a lot of time waiting for shared taxis and navigating your way there with public transport.

You’ll also be able to spend more time visiting the actual site and enjoying the waters of the Al Abid river.

The only downside is that you might feel like a sheep, squeezed in between all the members of your tour and you’ll have to follow a guide during the whole visit.

If you already have your own car or if you are renting one , I would much more recommend driving there by yourself than going on a tour.

Reaching the site is really easy and not complicated at all and you’ll be able to visit the falls at your own rhythm and stay there longer if you wish. This is also a tip we give if you want to visit  Paradise Valley near Agadir.

What can you do around the Ouzoud Falls?

Depending on the time of the year that you visit the waterfalls, you’ll be able to do some additional activities.

1. Swimming

If you visit Ouzoud during the summer, the water of the Al abid river will be warm enough to swim in it. There are different pools where one can swim right at the bottom of the Ouzoud waterfalls.

If the current is not too strong, it’s possible to go a bit farther from the falls and swim in a calmer part of the river away from the crowds.

2. Taking a small boat ride

There are small boats on the first pool of water at the bottom of the falls. For a small fee (about 20 MAD) they can take you very close to the cascades.

If you go on that boat ride, be prepared to get wet. I would suggest bringing a rain jacket and a water-resistant camera to enjoy the experience to the fullest.

One of the main reasons so many people visit this site apart from the beautiful waterfalls is the presence of wild Barbary monkeys. They play in the trees and hang out all around the river and the cascades.

But please, keep these monkeys wild and don’t feed them!

How to avoid the crowds at the Ouzoud waterfalls

The best way to avoid the crowds is to visit the area during winter. There are much fewer tourists there at that time of the year.

It’s also better to visit the falls as early as possible during the day since the place starts becoming really busy around noon.

What could be a good way to have the falls all for yourself is to bring a good tent and camp at one of the campsites near Ouzoud. That way, you can wake up and explore the area first thing in the morning.

Not only will you avoid the crowds but you’ll also have a much better light to take awesome pictures.

What’s the best viewpoint to take pictures of the Ouzoud Falls?

There are a lot of excellent viewpoints at the Ouzoud waterfalls where you’ll get some pretty amazing pictures.

If you want to take a picture of the waterfalls that will capture the vastness of the site, there is a particular picture spot that I would recommend.

It’s next to a huge hotel overlooking the waterfalls that is being built as I’m writing the article. I don’t know exactly what the hotel is called but here’s a photo so you know where to go to get the best pictures of the cascades.

Hallo! Wieso kann ein Sammeltaxi nicht direkt zu den Ouzoud Wasserfällen fahren, von Marrakesch, warum muss (soll) ich Taxi wechseln in Azilal? MfG

Hi Paul, if you take the shared taxi’s, they don’t go all the way to Azilal. But if you rent a private taxi, it will take you all the way to the Ouzoud Waterfalls (but that will be more expensive).

Ouzoud Falls: A Complete Guide to Visiting from Marrakech

The Ouzoud Falls are one of the best and easiest day trips from Marrakech! As soon as I saw a photo of them, I knew I wanted to make a day of it to see them in person.

Our three days in Marrakech fell right in the middle of our Morocco itinerary . By then I wasn’t really looking forward to being in another city, especially one that was supposed to be more hectic than Fes , Chefchaouen , and Tangier. I also wasn’t planning on doing any major shopping in the medina, so I kind of wanted to remove myself from the temptation.

Cue a day trip to the Ouzoud Falls!

What are the Ouzoud Falls?

The Ouzoud Falls are a series of waterfalls that fall over the El-Abid River gorge in the province of Azilal. In French, they’re called Cascades d’Ouzoud and in Amazigh, it’s Imuzzar n wuẓuḍ. 

There are 3 different drops and they all add up to 110m or 360ft high. The longest drop is 75m!

A part of an Ouzoud day trip is that there’s more to do than just seeing some incredible falls. In the same day you’ll be able to go swimming, do a little hiking, and maybe even have a monkey use you for a seat!

An Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip Itinerary

Here’s exactly how my tour to Ouzoud went!

Pick up in Marrakech

I was one of the first of my group picked up, so our driver came and got us around 8 am. Overall, it took about an hour to get everyone before we got on the road.

Arrive to the top of the Falls

Ouzoud Falls is a day trip from Marrakech,  but  it’s still kind of far away! I expected it to take us 3 hours to get there, so I was pleasantly surprised when it took less. They do stop off at a gas station midway if you want a quick snack or to stretch your legs.

The first stop you make is to the top of the falls, where you get the above scenery. I was pretty impressed already, but in reality this is actually the least interesting view!

Our guide, Ibrahim, then gave us a little history of the area including more about the olive trees and what exactly this beautiful mansion is below:

Hike down to the Bottom of the Falls to the Swimming Area

So, before you get going on your hike, your group is given the option of visiting some Berber villages or hiking down to a swimming area separate from the falls. At this point in my travels, I’m not one to politely be quiet while everyone tries to figure out who should speak up, so I immediately said the swimming hole. No one else felt strongly either way, and a few others chimed in on swimming, so we began our hike down!

It’s not a steep hike, but it does get kind of rocky in some places, so you’ll want to wear tennis shoes or hiking sandals at the bare minimum. I had on my white tennis shoes but probably would have preferred wearing actual sneakers.

30-40 minutes for swimming

It’s weird because I basically grew up in pools but I always forget how much I love being in the water! This swimming hole is away from the main falls area, so it was just our group. Most people hung out under the pavilion and got some drinks, but a few of us hopped in to swim. Most people jumped off the cliffs, but I quickly discovered my suit top was not fit for that haha.

Trust me, the swim was more than welcome after the heat and that hike down!

Go Over to the Main Falls Area

After swimming, Ibrahim rounded us up to go over the the main Ouzoud falls area. Now  this is where you’re going to get the best views. Like look at the above photos!

Take a boat, swim, or walk across

We basically had to cross over to the other side, and there are three options:

• Walking across this little bridge
• Swimming over
• Paying 20 MAD ($2 USD) for one of these fun boats

Ibrahim held my camera (and took a bunch of photos) while I took the boat over. It goes right up to the bottom of the falls, so you’re definitely going to get wet! You can enjoy our reactions above haha.

Walk up to the first view point

Once everyone had crossed over, we began the trek back up. This side is  much easier as it’s all stairs and different landings to hangout instead of just dirt. Our first view point was quite lovely and gets you pretty close to the falls from the side.

Climb up to a view point with monkeys

The next view point is where you’ll find some monkeys hanging out! They reminded me of the monkeys that hang around the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur except maybe both gentler and cheekier. They had no issue hopping onto people if you were holding food, but they’re not as grabby or aggressive as the KL ones. You can tell they’re very used to visitors but also do what they want when they want, how they want.

If you walk a little past the area all the monkeys tend to gather, there’s another view point that gives you some stunning views of the gorge itself. Maybe not the best point for anyone afraid of heights though!

The whole tour ends with lunch at 2 before going home. I only got a soda as I wasn’t really hungry and I’d rather just wait and get a good dinner. The restaurant they take you to is okay but nothing worth writing about.

Ouzoud Waterfall Tours

The easiest way by far is taking a tour . If you’re driving I would, of course recommend going on your own as you’ll have way more time to swim and relax at the bottom of the falls. I remember looking up public transport and it just sounded way too convoluted for me.

I really liked my tour! It’s super inexpensive (like a little more than $20 USD), and Ibrahim was awesome. He was funny and kept a good pace for the whole tour. I didn’t feel rushed at all even though we did a lot in basically 3 hours!

What to Wear to the Ouzoud Falls

As long as you have decently sturdy shoes and a swimsuit, you should be fine! I went to the falls with my bikini bottoms on with a pair of long linen pants and my favorite Everlane t-shirt. This made it easier for me to slip on my bikini top without needing to go to a changing room.

After the swimming, I just walked with my bikini top on since it covers a lot and I put my linen pants back on. Yes it was a little wet, but it’s pretty hot out, so everything dries quite quickly!

Ouzoud Falls

“How do I get to the Tangier desert?” For many of you who read these articles, that comment will make you throw your hands on your head, but people interested in traveling to the north of Morocco often ask me questions like this.

I think it’s common practice, in a search to advertise destinations with a phrase or a one-minute presentation video, to simplify the cultural and geographical reality they offer. So, in the same way that the USA is usually summed up in hotdogs, cowboys and route 66, the UK is fish and chips, royal guards and castles, Morocco is reduced to cous cous, desert dunes and narrow medinas.

Therefore, this entry serves to demonstrate once again the geographical and cultural wealth that Morocco offers, with places as non-stereotypical as the Ouzoud Waterfalls . Let’s get started!

Getting There

The Ouzoud Falls are located at the foot of the town of Tanaghmeilt , in the vicinity of Azilal , although it’s probably best known for being less than 90 miles (150 km) from Marrakech .

Here, along with Essaouira , are the preferred destinations for those staying in The Red City and looking for a day trip. If lack of time forces you to choose, I recommend the waterfalls, as it’s a more contrasting experience to wandering through the medina of Marrakech. On the other hand, it’s often full of foreign and local visitors, especially on weekends, so I advise you to plan to visit midweek.

There are two options to get here, at about 6 hours round trip. You can either pay for a day trip or for the services of a taxi driver. I only recommend taxis if there are enough people in your party to fill it up, maybe three or four people, and you prefer to leave and return at a certain time, because the round trip taxi ride can cost between 1500 and 1700 dirhams.

Another cost to consider is a mountain guide (approximately between 30 and 50 dirhams per person, offered at the entrance to the waterfalls). It’s not strictly necessary, but it’s recommended, given its low cost and that, despite the fact that, in general terms, the route is well signposted, sometimes we might get lost.

How to Get Down to the Falls

There are two ways to go down to where the waterfalls break: one way is faster and has stairs and the other more natural . Most likely, you’ll be told to go up and down via the first way.

The stairs are not physically demanding, so if you have some limited mobility you should have no problem with them. However, if you are somewhat physically fit, try going down via the area adjacent to the top of the waterfalls, skirting it once you get to the other end. You can go back up via the stairs, making the roundtrip less repetitive and more enjoyable.

Regardless of how you decide to do the tour, take sneakers, trainers or water shoes, as the terrain is slippery.

Everyone agrees that this is the biggest and most impressive waterfall in Morocco. It’s 350 feet tall (110 m) in three section s and has a massive flow of water practically year round from the river it gets its name from, making for a stunning show of sights and sounds.

From a nearby, high vantage point, we can start our visit enjoying the view from above and see the lake the falls flow into and the red clay cliffs dotted with moss that surround it.

We can also visit the park located just behind the falls. We can often see locals here relaxing and enjoying nature.

Heading Down to the Falls

The path down to the falls is only steep in a few spots and is never very narrow. The interesting part is that once we’re on the path we’re surrounded by so much beautiful, lush vegetation that it’s hard to tell where the waterfalls are.

Olive trees are everywhere , hence the name of the river and the waterfalls, as ouzoud means olive trees in Berber. We can also see a few simple buildings and even locals grazing their flocks .

What will capture your attention the most is probably the community of Barbary macaque monkeys that roam freely . If you’re like me, you’ll exhaust the memory of your camera taking pictures of them jumping, climbing trees or even just sitting there pensively (the monkeys’ personalities might remind you of someone you know). Please be careful and keep your distance. After all, it’s their home and we’re just visitors.

Another element to highlight are the small lakes and waterfalls that you will come across. I strongly recommend stopping at the café that is almost at the end with windows looking right out on one of those mini-waterfalls. You can stop there along the way for tea.

At the Foot of the Falls

The path down to the waterfalls should not take more than an hour. When we arrive we’ll see the majestic falls, the lake that the falls flow into and the boats along the shores of the lake.

After you’ve taken in the landscape, I recommend hiring the services of a rower. The cost will be 20 dirhams per person and you pay when you finish at the counter just behind where the boats dock.

This place really shows off the entrepreneurial spirit of the Moroccan people. They use materials that other people have thrown away like wooden pallets and planks on plastic drums and old dining chairs, covered in different brightly colored fabrics according to the boat (blue, pink, orange, etc.).

The boat ride is short but sweet. It’s a brief tour around the lake, where at any given moment we’ll get dangerously close to where the waterfall breaks. Don’t hesitate to encourage the rower to get as close as possible!

Alternatively, the most daring can choose to take a dip , provided the weather is good, as the water is usually quite cool.

Heading Back

There’s no interesting landscapes on the way back. There’s a good staircase, so it will be easier and faster than going down. One side of the path is a series of buildings, mainly shops and restaurants.

It’s probably lunchtime now, so let’s enjoy an inexpensive meal with priceless views . We’ll start by making sure of the price first. Don’t give up on your efforts until you get a set meal for 90-100 dirhams, and even a little less if you are skilled at haggling . About half is where we find the restaurants with good views.

About two thirds of the way up, there’s a lookout with a huge stone where people usually use to take their last pictures before leaving.

Finally, the route will become flat and the macaques will reappear. Since the Moroccans take advantage of this section to sell peanuts, the monkeys, who are surprisingly clever, flock here looking for a handout.

I once met a monkey that was rather interested in my hair. Before I knew it, he had already climbed the railing and got on to my head to sniff my scalp. The truth is it took a lot of effort to get him off of me, although it didn’t help that my friends were too busy taking pictures of him to help me.

As you can see this is a great side trip from Marrakech, as it’s inexpensive, varied and does not take that much time. Most people leave at around 8 in the morning, spend about four hours at the falls and are back in their hotels by five or six in the afternoon. There’ll be plenty of time to get to see another side of the city late in the afternoon and enjoy the Jemaa El Fna Square at night!

The Ouzoud Waterfalls of Morocco: All You Need to Know

Waterfalls is the last thing that comes to mind whenever people think about Morocco so that’s why other travelers were surprised when I told them you’ll find some of the most amazing waterfalls in the small town of Ouzoud, located mere two hours away from Marrakech.

And trust me, they are beyond awesome. Ready to explore this wonder of nature? Enjoy!!!

The Wonderful Ouzoud Waterfalls: A Perfect Day Trip from Marrakesh

After spending a couple of days in the heat of Marrakech, it was time for a change of scenery so when I heard about this amazing secluded spot where you can actually swim and have a lovely day at this impressive waterfalls.

The journey started the day before as my media assistant and friend, the lovely Rafaela (seriously, that’s her name!), and I began to approach tour agencies in Marrakech in order to arrange a one-day trip to the waterfalls since going by public transportation would require us to change buses in a town located further away from Ouzoud, effectively taking up to 5 hours each way!

Our problem? Finding a trustworthy tour agency in a city filled with scammers (check out the Top 7 Morocco Travel Scams here ).

Honest tour agents in Morocco (and basically, every single other person involved in the tourism industry) are hard to find since all of them will often lie and make empty promises in order to earn your money.

In fact, obtaining a fair price is near to impossible since each one will try to rip you off and it is up to you to bargain the price down.

The normal asking price for a one day tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls is 350 DH (35 Euros) but you can most likely bring it down the the more reasonable price of 150DH. Be warned though that the lunch and the guide’s fee (30 DH) are never included no matter what the agent/hotel might tell you.

What to Do and See at the Ouzoud Waterfalls

As soon as you arrive to the parking area of Ouzoud, your group will be approached by a guide that will take you on a one-hour journey from the top to the bottom of the waterfalls. The trip is very scenic as you will see the waterfalls from many different angles. And of course, there is a mandatory stop at a gift shop where the guide will get a commission from every item you buy.

Inside the gift shop you can buy traditional Berber cosmetics (including a green lipstick!) as well as honey, massage oil, spices and many more stuff you can bring home.

You can also get free bread to taste the spice sauces in case you didn’t get the chance to eat breakfast!

Minutes later, you will finally arrive to the bottom of the waterfalls where you can take a 10 DH boat ride directly underneath the mouth of the waterfall. Yes, you will get wet, very wet. If you have a camera or other non-waterproof items, I strongly suggest you to leave them with your guide since the roar of the waterfall is a very strong one!

Afterwards, you’re free to swim in the water. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we foreigners were a minority since most of the visitors here were locals who came from different places of Morocco in order to escape the heat, although I really felt bad for the Muslim women who had to wait in the rocks as their husbands and sons enjoyed the water.

Rainbows and Monkeys at the Ouzoud Waterfalls

To me, the main draw of Ouzoud was the monkeys. You see, waterfalls and rainbows are awesome but monkeys? Monkeys are the funniest animals in the entire world. Can you believe how human their faces look?

While it is rare to see monkeys on the long trek down to the bottom of the Ouzoud waterfalls, you can always find them in the easy trek up AND while you eat lunch at the restaurants. Too bad for me that the owner was a very grumpy guy who seemed to hate monkeys as he chased them away with a broom. Don’t you just love monkeys too?

The short trek up to the top of the waterfalls is a very easy one since you can do it in less than 10 minutes. I’m all for progress and accessibility for the less-capable people but a part of me wishes that the Moroccans hadn’t built those ladders that kind of ruin the natural beauty of this paradise.

Nevertheless, you can take advantage of this artificially made viewpoints to admire the rainbow that forms underneath the waterfall. Sure, you can see way more of them at Iguazu Falls but come on, this one is as beautiful as any other.

Before you reach the top you will find way more monkeys that would love to befriend you (as long as you give them a piece of bread). If feeding monkeys is your thing, remember to fold some bread from the restaurant in order to give it to this hairy fellow over here.

I mean, look at his eyes. Can you really say no to him?

How to Get to the Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech

As I mentioned before, the easiest and fastest way to reach Ouzoud is via an organized tour. I fully recommend you to book with an agency that is close to your hotel/hostels so you can easily track down the owner in the morning in case nobody comes to pick you up.

As I said before, Moroccans in the tourism industry will often lie in order to make a sell so be careful when booking.

Also, if you want to get the cheapest price available, it is best to book the night before since it’s likely that the rest of the travelers already paid the full price so the cost of taking you to Ouzoud becomes an opportunity cost and not a real one to the tour agency.

When in doubt, use the walk-away technique and make the agent chase you to the street. I still cannot believe that a roundtrip to this place set me back only 15 euros. Awesome, uh?

The Ouzoud waterfalls are the largest waterfalls in Morocco and one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech . The impressive photos I saw when I was preparing for my trip to Marrakech immediately made me want to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls.

And that’s how I ended up visiting the Ouzoud waterfalls on a 1-day trip from Marrakech. Throughout this post, you can find several tips to better plan your visit to the Ouzoud waterfalls : the best time to visit, and the best way to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls, among other tips.

Where are the Ouzoud waterfalls located?

The Ouzoud waterfalls are located about 150 km from Marrakech , in a small town – Tanaghmeilt. Although the distance from Marrakech is only 150 km , the journey between these two places takes on average about 2h30.

What is the best time of year to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Without a doubt, the best time to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls is during winter . As well as having fewer tourists (however, don’t expect to be there alone, as this is a very popular place!), the waterfall generally has more water during this time of the year.

However, if you would also like to bathe in the waterfalls, then it is better to choose to visit in summer . In winter, it will probably be too cold to take a dip in the water.

How to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls?

There are 3 possible options to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls :

• Independently and by car
• Independently and by public transport / shared taxi
• Organized tour

If you choose to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls by car , you have the option to park in one of the many car parks available around the waterfalls (most of these car parks are paid for!). A quick search on Google Maps and you will find these parking options.

On the other hand, if you choose to visit the waterfalls by public transport , the trip will be much more complex. I honestly believe that this option is not very worthwhile, given the extra time it takes and considering how cheap the organized tours usually are.

However, these are the main options for visiting the Ouzoud waterfalls by public transport:

• Take a bus to Beni-Mellal and then from there a shared taxi to the waterfalls
• Shared taxi to Azilal and then another shared taxi to Ouzoud

The third and final option to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls is a guided tour from Marrakech . This is the option I ended up choosing and is undoubtedly the most practical and convenient.

Which guided tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls should I book?

Firstly, there are several companies that offer a guided tour service to the waterfalls. Although it is possible to buy the tour in the streets of Marrakech or even in the city’s main square, I recommend you do it through Get Your Guide , to make sure you aren’t caught in any of the famous scams that exist in Morocco.

In my case, I chose to book this guided tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls . The tours are around 17€ – 30€ per person, which is not too expensive considering the duration of the activity and the distance between the waterfalls and Marrakech. However, there are other options available:

Is it necessary to bring money to the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Like many places in Marrakech , the restaurants by the Ouzoud waterfalls accept only cash . So I suggest you take some cash with you on this visit. I recommend withdrawing cash at Al Barid Bank (where you don’t pay fees) with a Revolut card .

How does the guided tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls work?

Most of the tours start very early (8 am – 9 am), with pick-up from our accommodation (or a nearby agreed location). After about 2 hours of driving, a stop of about 15 minutes is made at a café/service station. And after another hour of driving, we finally arrive in the town where the waterfalls are located.

Many of the tours already include a local guide who accompanies us during the whole trip, giving some indications about the waterfalls and also the surrounding area.

In my opinion, the tour had too many people and it was sometimes difficult to hear the guide’s explanations. However, considering that the main purpose of the tour was to see the waterfalls, I didn’t mind this too much.

The trail our guide showed us started near some viewpoints of the waterfalls and then descended along a dirt track. Although the trail was uneven, I didn’t find it too difficult. However, it requires proper footwear!

After a short walk along this dirt track, we reached yet another viewpoint – for me the best of the whole visit.

We waited for a while by this viewpoint until we got on a kind of boat, which took us closer to the water. When I bought the tour, I had to select the option that included the boat ride. So always confirm which options are included in the tour you book.

Although the tour is quite short (no more than 10 minutes) I found it a funny experience, because I could observe the waterfall from another perspective. I had read online that on this ride we could get quite wet, however, that didn’t happen, and we only had a few splashes of water.

However, I visited in January on a rather cold day and perhaps for that reason the boat drivers didn’t get as close to the waterfall.

It was then time for lunch (the guide told us we had about 1 hour to do so) and we opted to have lunch in one of the several restaurants available by the waterfalls. Most restaurants have a fixed menu that includes drinks, starters, main dish, bread and tea.

In January 2023, the price was 110 MAD per person (~9.9€) – a bit higher than Marrakech standards, but still quite affordable.

As soon as lunch was over, we climbed the stairway back to the starting point. Along the stairs, in addition to restaurants and cafés, there are also several handicraft shops. If you haven’t bought your souvenir from Morocco yet, this could be a good opportunity to do so 😉.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you are visiting the Ouzoud waterfalls independently and prefer not to walk on the dirt track, you can always access the waterfalls via this staircase. However, the route will no longer be circular as you will be going up and down the same side.

Almost at the end of the trail, we can see another of the things that brings many people to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls – the Gibraltar monkeys. Although many locals are selling food to give to the monkeys, it is not recommended to do so. Also, you should not touch them either.

As I already had the opportunity to visit these monkeys in Gibraltar , I didn’t find the experience so funny. In Gibraltar, I could see many more monkeys and, besides, they were much more daring, which immediately increased the adrenaline of the experience 😂. Anyway, I always enjoy watching these little guys playing with each other.

It was about 3 pm when we returned to the minibus that took us there. We made our way back to Marrakech, with another 10-minute stop along the way, and by 6 pm we were back in Marrakech.

Is it worth visiting the Ouzoud waterfalls on a day trip from Marrakech?

The Ouzoud waterfalls are, without a doubt, a must on any itinerary through Morocco. However, if you are only going to visit Marrakech for just a few days, I don’t really believe it’s worth it to “lose” an entire day just to visit the Ouzoud waterfalls!

For example, knowing what I know today, and bearing in mind I was in Marrakech for 3 days, I would not have visited the waterfalls to have more time to explore Marrakech calmly.

💡 EXTRA TIP: When visiting the Ouzoud falls on a day trip from Marrakech , we will arrive at the falls almost simultaneously with the other tours. So if you’d like to avoid the crowds, try to visit the Ouzoud falls independently so you can be at the falls early in the morning.

The Ouzoud Waterfalls

The imposing Ouzoud waterfalls are one of the most awe-inspiring natural sights you’ll come across in Morocco. Unfortunately, the location is a bit off the beaten track, but you can get there on a day trip from Marrakech. This article explains everything you need to know about a day trip to the Ouzoud Falls.

The famous Ouzoud Falls are located on the edge of the Atlas Mountains. They’re among the most popular places to photograph in Morocco. This isn’t surprising, because experiencing Oued River thundering down over a hundred meters into the depths is truly breath-taking. That’s not all, because Ouzoud is also famous for the Barbary apes who live in this valley, rounding off the spectacular scenery in a rather surreal manner.

The waterfalls provide a great contrast if you’re spending the majority your holiday in Marrakech or in other cities. You can easily spend more at the falls time or just visit on a day trip.

What will you see and experience at the Ouzoud Falls?

A journey to Ouzoud usually ends in the large car park above the falls. There, you’ll find guides waiting for newcomers, offering guided tours down to the waterfalls. The prices are relatively high (about 150 DH). However, you guide will take you on a different route to the foot of the Ouzoud falls. On the way, you’ll pass several hidden vantage points, with the opportunity to take some superb pictures.

From the car park, you can’t miss the main path to the waterfalls. In fact, you’ll see it from the souvenir shops, food stalls, cafes and little restaurants that line the paved path leading down to the foot of the great waterfall. The restaurants are better than you’d expect. In addition, the view from the terraces is absolutely unbeatable.

On the way down to the foot of the falls, you’re bound to meet the Barbary apes . They’re actually macaques and are agile, really cute and pretty sly. Over the years, they’ve learned not to fear man. Since some of them are really bold, you need to watch your belongings.

Going down the path to the falls takes less than ten minutes. At the bottom, you’ll have a great view of the imposing waterfall. You’ll see Moroccans waiting with little boats and they’ll escort you behind the waterfall for a small tip (10-20 DH). The constant thunder of the water is a truly spectacular background noise. Be warned, you can get a bit wet on this little detour. That’s why it’s advisable to leave cameras, mobile phones and other delicate, moisture-sensitive items in a safe place on the shore.

Swimming and hiking

The Ouzoud Falls are a popular bathing spot. Many people cool off here by swimming in the pools. However, since everyone who comes to Ouzoud visits the falls, there’s quite a lot of hustle and bustle. If you prefer a more tranquil experience, head to the smaller waterfalls downstream.

For a tip, you can cross over to the opposite bank of the Oued. You’ll find a narrow path along the river and this gradually leads you deeper into the valley. At the start, you’ll see a few little makeshift cafes, but you’ll soon find yourself alone. The cascades of the river form natural swimming pools and are ideal for swimming.

The path continues on through a really stunning landscape. At some point, you can turn back and return. Alternatively, cross to the other riverbank and carry on for a few more kilometers. On your return journey, you can choose either of the two banks. If you’ve taken the path to Ouzoud, you’ll definitely go down into the valley for a while and this is very worthwhile.

How do you get to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

Unlike other destinations in the Marrakech area, the Ouzoud Waterfalls are relatively remote for a day trip . By car, it will take you about three hours each way. There’s no direct bus route. All in all, there are four ways to get from Marrakech to Ouzoud. You can take the bus and a taxi, hire a car , go in your own private Grand Taxi or go on a group tour.

Hiring a rental car or using your own car

Travelling by car will take you about three hours and the various routes from Marrakech to the Ouzoud falls are around 150 – 190km. For example, you can drive on the N8 towards Benni-Mellal, which branches off after about 145km to the P3105 towards Aït Attab. This is a longer route. Another option is to follow the N8 and turn off on the R307 after about 120km. Follow this road until you reach the R304 towards Azilal, then take the P3105 to Ouzoud. However, the quickest way from Marrakech to Ouzoud is via the N8 and R208.

How to get from Marrakech to Ouzoud by car

By bus and Grand Taxi

Since there’s no direct bus service from Marrakech to Ouzoud, travelling by public transport or taxi can be a little more complicated than you’d expect in Morocco. It’s true to say that the Ouzoud waterfalls are very remote.

To get there, you’ll need to take a bus to either Beni-Mellal or Azilal. Buses run by private companies are cheaper and depart from Gare Routière near Bab Doukkala in Marrakech. Speak to the bus driver or the assistant in charge of luggage as soon as you can and explain where you actually want to go. The bus will then stop at the junction with the P3105. There, you’ll find a little square where the Grand Taxis stop. From there, you can travel on to Ouzoud.

The valley below the Ouzoud Falls is ideal for hiking

On your return trip, take a taxi from Ouzoud to the same place. You’ll then have to wait for a bus. To avoid a long wait, ask one of the riads in Ouzoud for the current bus timetable. The bus ride costs about 50 DH and a taxi is about the same.

The journey by bus and taxi definitely takes the longest. You might also find it hard to work out which bus to catch to travel back to Marrakech. To make the whole trip worthwhile, I would definitely recommend spending the night in Ouzoud. You can use the time during the day to go on a longer hike. You’ll get more out of this than going back the same day.

Travelling by Grand Taxi

Of course, the least stressful option is to take the easy route and book a private Grand Taxi for the entire journey to Ouzoud. This is probably the fastest way to get to the Ouzoud Waterfalls. However, it’s also the most expensive. Depending on your negotiating skills and finances, I’d expect a one-way journey to Ouzoud to cost at least 600 DH.

In Marrakech, the Grand Taxis going in this direction will be waiting between the Gare Routière and the city walls at Bab Doukkala.

Joining a group tour

Many travel agencies offer day trips from Marrakech to Ouzoud. These tours are usually by minibus. The trip doesn’t usually include a guide or any food and you just pay for the round trip. However, unlike travelling by your own means, it’s a time-efficient way of going on a day trip to the Ouzoud Waterfalls.

If you join one of these tours, I’d recommend finding out what time the minibus will be leaving to go home and then making your own way to the falls. It’s easy to explore the area on your own. Day trips to Ouzoud start at around 25 EUR per person.

Staying in Ouzoud

If you travel by public transport or car to Ouzoud, you should make the effort to spend the night here. With a little more time, you’ll be able to explore the area properly. I recommend trying to get to Ouzoud as early as possible and then going on a long hike as soon as you arrive.

In the early morning and late in the afternoon, there’s far less hustle and bustle at the viewpoints and the whole place is calmer. My tip for a place to stay is the beautiful Riad Cascade d’Ouzoud. It’s located right on the main square above the waterfalls. The village also offers other accommodation options.

Conclusion: Rainbows, Barbary apes, waterfalls

Although the Ouzoud Falls are quite a distance from Marrakech and you’ll need to sit in the car for a long time to experience this attraction first hand, the experience is worth every tedious moment of the journey. My highlights from the trip include seeing a rainbow over the gigantic falls, hiking in the valley and, of course, encountering the free-roaming Barbary apes. As a destination, the Ouzoud Falls offer a wonderful contrast to the busy medina of Marrakech.

On the other hand, winter provides a less crowded experience with more water flow and an overall serene atmosphere, although swimming may be too cold to consider. Alternatively, it is possible to catch a public bus from Marrakech which takes you to Beni Mellal before continuing on to Ouzoud. For those looking for an adventure, hitchhiking can be a great way of getting around Morocco cheaply although it may take longer than other transportation options. Finally, for those who are comfortable with self-driving in Morocco and have their own vehicle, exploring the sights along the route can make this journey even more enjoyable.

1. By Shared Taxi: Marrakech – Azilal – Ouzoud

Many travelers find it cost-effective to take a shared taxi from Marrakesh to Azilal and then onto Ouzoud, offering the opportunity to experience the rural landscape of Morocco en route. Along the way, riders can expect majestic views of mountains and Berber villages that are sure to mesmerize. As the journey progresses, travelers will be able to witness local life in action as they pass through small villages and observe traditional Moroccan culture.

The trip is an ideal choice for those looking for an unforgettable adventure while enjoying a budget-friendly option. From Azilal onwards, you can take another Taxi directly to Ouzoud Waterfalls where one can marvel at its thunderous beauty and tranquility. With this economical option, travelers can enjoy a unique experience without breaking their wallets. Moving on from here, there is also the possibility of taking a public bus from Marrakech all the way to Beni Mellal before reaching Ouzoud Waterfalls by a shared Taxi.

2. By Public Bus: Marrakech – Beni Mellal – Ouzoud

Taking a public bus is an affordable way to reach the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakesh, taking passengers through Beni-Mellal with views of rural Morocco along the journey. The Cascades D’Ouzoud, widely known as Ouzoud Falls, is a collective term for multiple tall waterfalls in Morocco. The former title is the French name of the waterfall. 

Ouzoud Falls is truly a paradoxical sight to see! 

They are perhaps the most magnificent of all cascades. This can be owed to the fact that they stand out in a region largely perceived as arid. They bring a serene liveliness. The contrasting landscape adds a spark to the whole feature. 

With a height of 110 m or 330 ft, the Ouzoud Falls are the tallest waterfalls in North Africa. This makes it the second tallest in all of Africa as well! 

The waterfalls are a three-step feature. The uppermost cascade is the tallest with a height of 75 m. 

The site is the most visited area in the region. 

Where do the cascades get their name from?

A name can tell you a lot about the history or culture of a place. 

The name of the falls has its roots in Berber culture. ‘Ouzoud’ roughly translates into ‘the act of grinding grain.’ The beautiful green and red scenery are dotted with little grinding mills, and perhaps that is the reason for the name. The force of the water may be used to operate these mills.

Some sources contradict this and believe that it comes from the word ‘Ozo’ meaning Olive, as there is an abundance of olive trees in the area. 

Where are the Ouzoud Falls located?

The Ouzoud Falls are located near a village called Tanaghmeilt in Morocco. 

Tanaghmeilt is a Middle Atlas village. The Middle Atlas is a mountain range in the North-Eastern part of Morocco. It is a part of the Atlas mountain range, which is constituted of three main chains. The Middle Atlas is the northernmost. 

The village lies in the Azilal Province. It is to the northeast of Marrakech, the fourth largest city in the country. The city is one of the busiest in Africa. It is also a major tourist destination, with good reason. To add to that, it is an economic center as well. 

The Ouzoud falls can be reached from there in about 3 hours. The distance is about 93 miles or 150 km.  

What is the origin of these waterfalls?

It is believed that at some point in the early history of the landscape, a spring caused the formation of a mass of reddish-brown calcareous tufa. 

Calcareous tufa is a type of porous, cellular rock that is formed when calcium carbonate precipitates from hot or cold springs.

This mass hardened over the years and came to be a part of the Middle Atlas region. The river Al-Abid falls over the huge barrage and forms the Ouzoud Waterfalls. They empty into the Al-Abid river gorge. 

What is the best time to visit the Ouzoud Cascades?

The Ouzoud Falls remain a spectacular site to behold throughout the year. 

They are especially marvelous and at their strongest during the spring and winter season, though. Busiest during the summer season, it is a fulfilling experience to visit the falls during this time to enjoy the cool waters in the scorching heat.

The winter season sees a lot less tourist traffic as compared to the summer season. The water is too cold to swim in. 

The color of the waterfalls may be rather brownish in the rainy season. This is due to clay and silt deposits being washed off and carried in the water, giving in a brown hue. 

If you visit during the afternoon when the sun is at its peak, you may even be lucky to catch a few waterfall rainbows.

What languages are spoken in the area?

Communication is perhaps the most vital part of any trip. You must be able to interact with the local population to a certain extent for a better experience. 

The chief languages spoken in Ouzoud are French, Spanish, Arabic, and Berber. You may want to learn some basic phrases in any of them if you so wish. You can always use translators or dictionaries.

How to get to the Ouzoud Falls

There are a variety of available options for you to choose from to get to the Ouzoud Falls. Ideally, if you wish to visit the cascades, you should journey from the city of Marrakech.

You may be wondering what the distance from  Marrakech to Ouzoud  is.  As mentioned earlier, the distance is about 93 miles (150 km), and the travel time will be almost 3 hours. 

You can opt for any of the following:

• Public bus 

 Traveling to the Ouzoud Falls in your own car

You can use your own car or a rented one to reach the site. Before you embark on the journey, though, make sure to study the route carefully. This will help you navigate better. 

In order to reach the waterfalls from Marrakech, you will have to drive in the northeast direction on highway N8. You must continue on the highway N8 to meet highway R208, which will take you to a small town and rural commune called Tanant.

The Cascades D’Ouzoud is about 40 minutes away from Tanant, if you head northeast on R304 and then take a left onto P3105. From there on, you will need to refer to road signs and maps to help you reach the destination. 

Here are some tips if you are driving yourself to the site:

• Use a GPS system and keep it handy.
• Carry a roadmap of the area
• Have other maps accessible with the route clearly marked in case of GPS failure
• Drive with caution due to changing landscape 
• Slow down while nearing towns and villages

Renting a car in Marrakech

There are many car rental agencies that you can contact to rent a car in Marrakech for your trip to the Ouzoud Waterfalls. 

You will see that there are two types of car rental companies- International and Local. The international agencies have branches in almost all tourist cities. However, their rates are much higher than those of the local companies. 

You must take certain things into account when renting a car. Make sure you follow the points below:

You are advised to park your vehicle somewhere directly near the entrance of the site instead of far off. There are many available parking areas where you can park your car. However, you will have to pay for a spot. 

Parking will most likely cost anywhere between 10 MAD and 20 MAD. You can pay the fee directly to the attendant. 

Using public transport to get to the Ouzoud Falls

You can take a public bus to reach the site from Marrakech as well. The buses usually go to the city of Beni-Mellal. You can hire a taxi from there on till the Cascades. 

The two main companies that operate buses in Morocco are  CTM  and  Supratours . The public buses may cost anything from 50 MAD to 60 MAD. 

You can also book a shuttle bus. A lot of local companies run shuttle buses, which usually cost around 300 MAD. You will have to book a shuttle bus a day before you wish to visit the falls. The bus can pick you up from your hotel in the city, too, depending upon its terms of service.

Hiring a taxi for the journey from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Falls

An excellent option that you can consider is to take a taxi to the cascades. 

If you choose to opt for a shared taxi, it is best to take it from Bab Doukkala in Marrakech. It will cost about 50 MAD per person if the vehicle is full, the capacity typically being six people. If there are lesser people, you will have to pay more. 

The taxi will drop you off in Azilal, a small town very close to the Ouzoud Waterfalls. You will have to take another taxi from there. It will cost about 25 MAD per person in a shared taxi, and 150 MAD for a solo one. 

Do the Ouzoud Waterfalls have an entrance fee?

The Ouzoud Falls are free to visit. You do not have to pay any entrance fee. You can just bring yourself to the site and walk right in!

At most, the on-site costs that you will have to account for will include the parking charges and boat charges. You have already learned about the parking fee and what it entails.

There are many small boats at the bottom of the waterfall. You can use these fun boats to cross over to the other side. It will be an interesting experience indeed! You will have to pay around 20 MAD to get a seat on one of these boats.

Activities you can do on-site at the Ouzoud Falls

There are a lot of fun things to do once you are at Ouzoud Falls. You can go hiking, trekking, swimming, boating, or just laze around in the shade of the olive trees. It is like paradise!

You can hire a local tour guide to give structure to your visit if you have not planned anything concrete. A guide may charge you around 30 MAD per person in a group, and 100 to 150 MAD if you are alone. 

Hiring a guide is not necessary at all, and you can just wing it as well. Here are a few activities that you can engage in at the Falls:

Swimming at the Ouzoud Falls

If you visit the Ouzoud Falls during the summer season, you will find the water of river Al-Abid to be warm enough to swim in. At the Ouzoud Falls, swimming is a popular activity. 

There are many natural pools at the bottom of the waterfalls. These pools are located separately. 

Sometimes the current may be a bit strong, so you may want to go for a milder part to swim in. You can always venture out a little farther to calmer parts of the river, away from the visiting crowds. 

The Ouzoud swimming area is a hike downwards from the main Falls area. 

Taking a boat ride 

There are little boats on the pool of water at the bottom of the Falls. These boat rides are incredible because they can bring you extremely close to the cascades. Prepare to get wet, though! 

You may want to keep your phones, cameras, and electronic devices in safe, water-proof places. To reiterate, the boat ride costs 20 MAD.

Feeding the indigenous Ouzoud Barbary Monkeys

The Cascades D’Ouzoud are also popular for the frisky little Barbary monkeys that are found in abundance there. They are playful yet mischievous, and these traits make them famous as well as infamous at the same time. 

You will find the Ouzoud monkeys playing around in the trees. They are a fun sight to watch too!

The monkeys are wild, but they are used to having a lot of people around. This means that they are very interactive with the tourists. They are usually peaceful but may also engage in alarming activities such as snatching the food.

You can calmly offer food to the Ouzoud monkeys. That way, you can interact with them. You should feed them only natural foods, like fruits and nuts. Giving them junk food, bread, and other such items can affect their health and immune system for the wild. 

You must keep in mind that the monkeys are wild, after all, and you should not provoke them in any manner. This can cause them to attack you and display aggression. Maintain a composed and calm body posture. Keep your movements friendly. 

Hiking in the area around the Ouzoud Waterfalls

The area in which the waterfalls are situated is rocky and steep. It is a gorge, after all. The hike from the car park, located at the top of the gorge, to the falls below takes about an hour. 

The track that runs into the canyon is considerably steep. Therefore, you must maintain caution. This track, in itself, has a spectacular environment. You can enjoy the breezy shade of the olive trees, the sound of the gushing water, and the stark contrast between the red rocks and lush vegetation.

Dar Aya  is an exceptional option. It has great accommodation, sporting a garden and a shared lounge. It has its own restaurant as well. 

If you are an adventurous person, you could consider bringing along a tent and the necessary equipment to camp at one of the campsites. This has other benefits too. You will be able to hear the calming hum of the waterfalls all night long. 

You can also wake up early and have the Waterfalls all to yourself since the area is usually empty in the mornings. You will be able to get there before the crowds reach for a more personal experience.

Guided Tours of the Ouzoud Falls

Do you enjoy traveling and sightseeing while in good company? Do you want a fully planned experience? If yes, then guided tours are the best choice for you to make.

Organized tours  are one of the most popular ways to reach the Ouzoud Falls. A lot of travel and tour agencies offer packages that cover Ouzoud. These can be booked from Marrakech. 

The prices of each agency vary greatly. The pricing usually starts around 275 MAD for one person. 

The tours include transport but do not always cover the costs of a local guide or food at the cascades. The guided tours help in saving a lot of money that you otherwise would have spent on transport. 

The tour will most likely include a smooth ride and refreshments on the way. The tour bus or minivan will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or boarding. 

How should you dress while visiting the Cascades D’Ouzoud?

The Ouzoud Falls are fairly untouched by construction activities. This means that the terrain is rugged and pristine. You will need to dress in comfortable clothes like track pants or jeans for a smooth visit. 

You may also want to bring a swimsuit along with you if you want to go swimming. You should always keep an extra set of clothing as well, in case the ones you are wearing get wet or too dirty. 

The planet is rife with striking natural features. Morocco has one of the best to offer. The Ouzoud Waterfalls are truly a remarkable sight to see. 

While traveling, it is important to be up to date with the local news, customs, traditions, and more, so that you have a respectful vacation. It is also equally important to have a knowledge of the area you are in for a smooth and safe experience.

Yes, Ouzoud Waterfalls are worth checking out on a day trip from Marrakesh!

As much as I love visiting urban areas during my travels, I always include some quality nature time. One way I did that in Morocco was by indulging in a day trip to a waterfall. While the site was inundated with humans, I still found the visit worth it as there were much less people there than in Marrakech! Read on to see what it was like visiting Ouzoud Waterfalls in Morocco!

A Bit About Ouzoud Waterfalls

Known as Cascades d’Ouzoud in French, this site is a highly popular day trip from Marrakech as it is only about 150km from the city. These falls are 360 feet high (110m) at the highest point, making it the tallest waterfall in North Africa. The word “Ouzoud” apparently is a Berber word that means “the act of grinding grain”.

Getting to Ouzoud Waterfalls

I was picked up at the main square in Marrakech by my day tour group. Joining a day tour was the cheapest way to get to the falls since I was travelling solo – it isn’t my favourite way to do things, but day tours can be useful! While it was a 2.5 hr drive, it wasn’t a boring one both because of fun conversations with a couple of American women, but also because of the landscape. I loved seeing the deep red earth, tall mountains in the distance, gnarled olive trees, workers sitting in a field with a mint tea picnic, and flocks of sheep milling around. Periodically, we passed through small towns where we saw donkey and carts, lots of aimless looking young men, blocky buildings in all shades of pinks and oranges, and a surprising amount of skinned headless animals for sale.

Note – while the roads are very good, they can be twisty. So, if you do get carsick, best pack Gravol or Dramamine or the equivalent. We did pass a tourist bus that had pulled over to allow a man to puke up his guts at the side of the road…

Visiting Ouzoud Waterfalls

Upon arrival, we joined other newly arrived visitors and waited to be assigned a guide. We were split up by language and we ended up with a Moroccan guide whose English was tinged by a British accent. The first stop was a lookout above the falls; it was pretty busy and so took a little bit of effort to get photos sans photobombers. But even after successfully avoiding photobombers, I wasn’t really happy with the pictures I took – I found that the falls had to be photographed from up close in order to get that atmospheric feel. After the lookout, we continued on a paved route, shaded by olive trees, to a traditional Berber house. It was claimed that the house was 700 years old. Nearby, we stopped for the third time: the obligatory Argan Oil demonstration. And of course, we were encouraged to buy things. My pre-trip research had indicated that one could not trust any of these places (i.e. random shops, so-called co-ops) so I did not indulge.

It was at the bottom of the falls where I was finally wowed by Mother Nature. I suggest you take time to wander around the base, if you can, before taking the boat ride that would ferry you right up close to the thundering water. The boat ride cost 20dh and I think it was worth it. For about ten minutes, about we were rowed right up to and around the tumbling water. I found it lovely – tall cliffs made up of red rock and green vegetation, heavy mist refreshing us in the hot sun, and the loud thunder of falling water. It was those few minutes that really made the trip worthwhile.

Note – while you don’t need hiking shoes for this trip, you do need good shoes with grip. Keep the strappy sandals for the city. You will walk more than you think.

What else to see at Ouzoud Waterfalls

There are a myriad of shops and restaurants here. While the food may not be the greatest, if you didn’t bring a packed lunch, the food will keep you from going hangry until you get back to Marrakech. Another thing for which you should look out while at Ouzoud Waterfalls are the rainbows. Keep in mind, though, that some of the lookout points are better than others for rainbow spotting. Try the one close to the restaurants.

The final thing to see at Ouzoud Waterfalls are the monkeys. Yep, there are Barbary apes here. There were even babies! The chance to photograph a beautiful mom and baby pairing was the second highlight of my day, here. What was not a highlight was a male monkey who sat a little further away – him, I ignored as he was just sitting there fondling himself. It was…. weird. And no, I did not take his photo!

So, overall, while Ouzoud Waterfall can be pretty busy and it is a bit far from Marrakech, it is still a good option for a day trip from the city. The falls are lovely and if you’re like me, any chance to see the beauty of Mother Nature is a good thing!
