10 Things to Do in Pasig

pasig city tourist spots

Pasig is a city in the Philippines located along the eastern border of Metro Manila. While most business and luxury tourists usually stay in the Manila / Pasay area to be near the airport and backpackers will want to stay in the Makati / Poblacion area for the nightlife, I would recommend staying in Pasig if you’re traveling with the family or if you want to enjoy a mix of active pursuits and city comforts.

pasig city tourist spots

This vibrant destination is packed with family-friendly activities, restaurants, bars, and shopping malls. For those who are staying a few days in the area, or are looking for something new to do during the weekends, here are just a few fun and unique activities you can do in Pasig and very near including the Greenfield District (part of Mandaluyong City) and Bagumbayan in Quezon City.

Table of Contents

1. Relax at Ace Water Spa

Ace Water Spa is an all-weather indoor facility with Olympic Sized pools for laps and hydrotherapy pools with aquatic jets that massage specific areas of the body. Visitors can just chill out in the pools, float around the lazy river, or soak in the hot herbal pools which can help soothe muscles and release body toxins then submerge in the cold water pools to stimulate blood flow in the skin and underlying muscles.

2. Get a workout at Climb Central Manila

Climb Central Manila in Greenfield District is the largest indoor wall climbing gym in the country, with over 45 climbing lanes for up to 100 climbers. The whole place is air-conditioned with lockers and well-maintained shower rooms where you can freshen up after you scale the walls. This offers a fun indoor destinations, for beginners and advanced climbers alike. They have a lot of kid-friendly routes here. Even if you’re alone, you can try out the walls because some walls have an auto-belay system.

3. Feel like a kid at Trampoline Park

Right next to Climb Central Manila, you can visit Trampoline Park. Get to feel like a kid again while having a fun workout with jumping, hopping, and bouncing on trampolines at Trampoline Park’s Zero Gravity Zone at The Portal in Greenfield District, Mandaluyong. You would think something like this would be just for kids, but they get a lot of adults and teens here. Aside from the trampolines, there’s a foam pool and gravity dodgeball.

pasig city tourist spots

4. Go biking at The Bike Playground

The Bike Playground in Circulo Verde boasts of a one-kilometer outdoor trail and outdoor track for kids. The trail is well-designed and offers a few twists, ramps and jumps for a quick trail biking fix. The highlight here is the internationally designed pump track. Technically, The Bike Playground is not in Pasig anymore (it’s part of Bagumbayan in Quezon City), but it’s near enough Pasig accessible by C-5 going to Libis and Eastwood.

5. Get locked in a room for fun

Breakout Philippines is one of the first real life room escape games in the country, where you get a chance to plan as a team, solve puzzles and escape from locked rooms in just 45 minutes. They have lots of branches around Metro Manila including Pioneer Paragon Plaza Building, Ground floor Reliance St., corner EDSA, Mandaluyong City very near Greenfield District.

6. Visit Parks in the area

If you’re traveling with kids, you might be interested to check out The Pasig City RAVE Rainforest Adventure Experience , a mixed recreational and natural park with a mini-zoo, boating lagoon, botanical garden, zip line, obstacle course, and skating rink. I haven’t been there myself, but some residents say the park is a popular hangout for locals because entrance is free.

pasig city tourist spots

During weekends, you can also check out the weekend market at Greenfield District’s Central in Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City (very near Pasig’s Kapitolyo area) to look for unique finds featuring Metro Manila’s best kept secret shops and boutiques. You can enjoy an afternoon of outdoor shopping and dining under their carousel-like tents. The whole place is very family-friendly with interactive games for kids.

7. Go shopping and mall-hopping

There are a lot of malls near Pasig and the Ortigas Centre including SM Megamall, Shangri-la Plaza, Rustan’s, Capitol Commons, Estancia Mall, The Podium and Robinson’s Galleria to name a few, where you can head to for your shopping needs. Recently, as part of their Christmas display Estancia Mall in Capitol Commons launched the Vast Imaginarium , a series of themed “Instagram-worthy” mirror rooms inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s mirror room exhibits. Entrance is free!

A post shared by Estancia (@estanciaph) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:39am PST

If you’re looking for something more distinctly Pinoy, you can check out Tiendesitas, a shopping complex of “villages” featuring stylized Filipino architecture. The complex is made up of twelve pavilions inspired by Maranao architecture, which in turn traces its roots back to the bahay kubo. Shoppers can take calesa rides through the complex. If you’re with kids, nearby attractions include Ark Avilon Zoo, Fun Ranch and Jump Yard, another trampoline park.

8. Go Food Tripping around Kapitolyo

Barangay Kapitolyo in Pasig is a great neighborhood destination for food-trippers. The nearby Capitol Commons has a lot of upscale restaurants and bars while the stretch of East Capitol Drive and nearby streets like Brixton and United Street have more budget-friendly options that offer everything from comfort food, desserts, to international specialties. My favorite restaurant in the area is Locavore Kapitolyo, which offers classic twists on Filipino food.

pasig city tourist spots

The Sizzling Sinigang and Oyster and Lechon Sisig are must-tries! Other great places to eat in Kapitolyo include Bistro United, Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina, CAB Cafe, Cafe Juanita. Many restaurants here are very cozy and family-friendly.

pasig city tourist spots

Cafe Juanita is another interesting restaurant in terms of its eclectic interiors. I found the food a bit pricey and ordinary for the portion size, but the place is visually interesting. Probably better for dessert or coffee just to see the place and not a full meal.

9. Hang out at a Food Park

You can find food parks everywhere these days, including Pasig. If you’re traveling with friends, Pasig has its own share of trendy food parks ideal for barkadas including The Yard Underground in Oranbo and Gastropark and Madison Commons in Kapitolyo.

Industrie Food Loft, an air-conditioned rooftop food hall with very Instagram-worthy interiors, is more ideal for families and kids. You can find this in J. Vargas corner Ruby Road, Ortigas.

So, buckle up and get ready to delve into the fascinating history of Pasig City with me!

Pasig City Mega Market

Bonus: dimas-alang bakery, a glimpse into pasig city’s past.

City of Pasig, an urban jewel situated within the bustling National Capital Region of the Philippines.

There are no firsthand accounts of Pasig City’s history until Spanish colonizers came in 1573 and built the city known as the Ciudad-Municipal de Pasig.

The name “Pasig” holds a deep-rooted significance, stemming from the Tagalog term for “a river that flows into the sea” or “sandy bank of a river.” This etymological origin underscores the city’s intimate connection with the iconic Pasig River , a vital lifeline coursing through its heart.

Historical Places In Pasig abound, each telling a unique story of the city’s rich past. Among these treasures is the Pasig Cathedral, also known as the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, a majestic landmark erected around the time of the city’s founding in 1573. This architectural gem stands as a testament to Pasig’s enduring faith and cultural heritage.

As we journey through Pasig’s history, we discover its evolution from a quaint rural settlement to a thriving urban center. Once primarily residential and industrial, Pasig has witnessed a surge in commercial activity, especially with the development of the Ortigas Center business district in the west.

The city’s significance extends beyond its borders, as it was formerly part of Rizal province before the establishment of Metro Manila. Pasig served as the seat of government for Rizal, hosting the old Rizal Provincial Capitol until 2009 when a new capitol was inaugurated in Antipolo. Despite this transition, Pasig remains steeped in historical importance within the province.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Bahay Na Tisa

Bahay Na Tisa

Pasig City’s beloved historical treasure, the oldest surviving bahay na bato. Constructed in the early 1850s by Don Cecilio Tech y Cabrera, this charming residence has stood the test of time, welcoming seven generations of the Tech family and bearing witness to pivotal moments in Pasig’s and the country’s history.

Throughout Martial Law, it gained renown as “Freedom House,” serving as a neutral ground where diverse political factions could convene. Its role expanded to hosting art exhibitions and briefly housing the unofficial San Jose Barangay Headquarters. Within its walls lies the revered Santo Nino de Pasion, while every Sunday post-Easter, it opened its doors to the community’s sick, offering spiritual solace and blessings.

Crafted with sturdy adobe walls supporting its hardwood floors, Bahay Na Tisa boasts a rich architectural heritage. Though its original tisa roof succumbed to WWII’s destruction, it now stands proud under a corrugated asbestos replacement. Its windows adorned with delicate Capiz shells add to its timeless charm. Notably, it has become a sought-after backdrop for numerous films and TV series, earning its place as one of the most renowned Historical Places in Pasig, notably featured in productions like the Centennial Offering on Dr. Jose Rizal, the nation’s revered hero.

In recognition of its cultural significance, the Pasig City government bestowed upon Bahay na Tisa the esteemed “Dangal ng Lahi” award in 2009. Furthermore, on February 19, 2020, the National Museum officially recognized it as an Important Cultural Property, a fitting tribute 154 years after its inception.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Bitukang Manok

The Pariancillo River or Bitukang Manok

Bitukang Manok, a winding waterway steeped in history and charm. Once a vital stream of the Pasig River, this serpentine channel was affectionately known by locals as Bitukang Manok, preserving its indigenous identity amidst Spanish naming conventions.

In its heyday, Bitukang Manok was the lifeblood of Pasig, nurturing its rice plains and bustling riverbanks. The Pariancillo River, as it was initially dubbed, thrived as a vibrant public market until the 1970s, contributing immensely to Pasig’s economic prosperity.

Spanning the Pasig and Antipolo rivers, Bitukang Manok served as more than just a waterway—it was a sacred path for pilgrims journeying from Manila and nearby towns to the revered Shrine in Antipolo. For centuries, this picturesque route witnessed the devout trekking to seek solace and blessings, with even the revered image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage traversing its tranquil waters eleven times.

Adding to its rich tapestry of history, the 18th century saw the erection of a remarkable concrete covered bridge by the Gremio de Mestizos de Sangley, a testament to Pasig’s cultural fusion. Initially christened Pariancillo Bridge, it later earned the illustrious name Fray Felix Trillo Bridge, honoring the indelible legacy of Pasig’s beloved pastor.

Plaza Rizal & Plaza Bonifacio

Plaza Rizal and Plaza Bonifacio, two iconic landmarks that pay homage to the Philippines’ rich heritage.

Plaza Rizal, located just across from the Pasig City Museum, holds a special place in the city’s narrative. Once the site of the Beaterio de Sta. Rita de Pasig, established in 1740 as the first beaterio outside of Manila, this space bore witness to significant historical events. Following its destruction during WWII, Plaza Rizal emerged as a vibrant park, dedicated to honoring the legacy of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

Meanwhile, Plaza Bonifacio stands as a testament to the bravery and leadership of Andres Bonifacio, symbolized by the lone sculpture of him astride a horse. This tribute, bestowed by the local government, commemorates Bonifacio’s pivotal role in the armed struggle for Philippine independence. Adjacent to the sculpture lies the poignant “Nagsabado sa Pasig” Memorial, erected to remember the August 1896 gathering where Filipinos strategized their fight against Spanish colonization.

These squares are more than just public spaces; they are living tributes to the courageous individuals and pivotal moments that shaped Pasig’s history. As key Historical Places in Pasig, Plaza Rizal and Plaza Bonifacio invite visitors to connect with the past, reflect on our shared heritage, and celebrate the enduring spirit of the Filipino people. Come, wander through these hallowed grounds, and immerse yourself in the stories that continue to resonate through the ages.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Cuartel Del Guardia Civil (Guanio Residence)

Cuartel Del Guardia Civil (Guanio Residence)

The Cuartel del Guardia Civil, steeped in tales of governance, revolution, and resilience.

Originally commissioned by Don Apolonio Santiago y Domingo, Pasig’s governor in 1881, this structure bore witness to significant transformations over the years. Renamed Cuartel del Guardia Civil in 1894, it became a focal point during the tumultuous Philippine Revolution of 1896. Within its walls, suspected Katipuneros faced imprisonment, torture, and even death at the hands of colonial forces, marking a somber chapter in Pasig’s history.

Following the Filipino-American War, the Cuartel del Guardia Civil found new purpose under the ownership of Doña Clara Tambunting de Oliveros. Later, in 1922, Engineer and Mrs. Domingo Guanio acquired the property, adding to its storied past and ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

As one of the historical places in Pasig City, the Cuartel del Guardia Civil stands as a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices endured by our forebears.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Raymundo Residence

Raymundo Heritage House

Situated just beyond Plaza Rizal stands the Raymundo House, a charming abode adorned with traditional capiz windows that bear witness to generations of history in Pasig.

According to Tutay Raymundo, this house holds significant familial ties as her family’s ancestral home. Julio Raymundo, her great-grandfather, proudly served as Pasig’s first Mayor, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s governance. Continuing the legacy, Julio’s son, Cipriano, also took up the mantle of Mayor, further shaping Pasig’s trajectory.

Delving deeper into its past, Liz Selavan Odnumyar reminisces about the property’s bustling bakery, Panaderia El Pasig, which flourished on the ground floor since around 1913. Baltazar Raymundo, Teresa Raymundo’s brother, founded this beloved establishment, while Teresa’s daughter, Felisa Santos, ventured into her own bakery venture, Panaderia Dimas-Alang.

Sadly, as Rolando Magallon, a former baker of Panaderia El Pasig, recalls, the bakery closed its doors in the 1990s, marking the end of an era for this cherished community establishment.

Today, the Raymundo House continues to stand as a testament to Pasig’s rich heritage, leased for the third time, according to vendor “Ate Letty,” whose stall stands nearby. As it returns to the market, this historic residence invites us to reflect on the evolving landscape of Historical Places in Pasig, where the echoes of the past intersect with the rhythms of the present.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Pasig Cathedral (Immaculate Concepcion Parish Church)

Pasig Cathedral (Immaculate Concepcion Parish Church)

The cradle of faith in Pasig City, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral (ICC), a cornerstone of the city’s history and the Philippines’ inaugural Marian Parish.

Founded in 1572 by the Augustinian Missionaries, this venerable institution traces its roots to the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1573, celebrated annually on July 2nd. However, it wasn’t until April 25, 1587, that the church officially adopted the title of Immaculate Conception, cementing its devotion to the Blessed Mother.

The present-day stone church, a testament to enduring craftsmanship, was erected between 1722 and 1760, standing as Pasig’s oldest structure. Its storied halls bear witness to pivotal moments in Philippine history, including the convening of the Second Philippine Commission on June 5, 1901. Here, the establishment of a civil government led to the creation of the Province of Rizal, with Pasig as its capital, through the passage of Philippine Commission Act No. 137.

Over the centuries, the ICC has undergone transformations, including a blessed renovation by Jaime Cardinal Sin on October 28, 1992, coinciding with the original altar’s dedication date. This milestone marked a new chapter in the church’s legacy, culminating in its elevation to cathedral status in October 2003, under the leadership of Father Francisco San Diego as the first bishop.

Located within the ICC’s walls lies its own Diocesan Museum, housed in the convent, showcasing a treasure trove of church artifacts. From Immaculate Conception dresses to remnants of the original bell tower clock, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Pasig’s religious heritage.

As one of the foremost historical places in Pasig City, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral stands as a beacon of faith, resilience, and cultural preservation.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Caruncho Tower / Pasig City Revolving Restaurant

Caruncho Tower / Pasig City Revolving Restaurant

The Mutya ng Pasig Tower, a distinctive landmark near the bustling Pasig Mega Market, formerly known as the Pasig Palengke , which holds a special place in the historical landscape of Pasig.

Constructed in 1974 under the visionary leadership of Emiliano R. Caruncho, Jr., the tower quickly became a beloved symbol of Pasig’s progress. Boasting multiple levels of concessionaires and a captivating rotating restaurant at its peak, the Mutya ng Pasig Tower was a vibrant hub of activity, drawing locals and visitors alike to its heights.

During its heyday, the tower stood as a rare gem, with only one other rotating restaurant in all of Metro Manila, situated atop the Royal Hotel in Quiapo, Manila. However, as the turbulent economic crisis of the ’80s took its toll, the Mutya ng Pasig Tower faced challenges. Unable to weather the storm, operations ceased, and the tower gradually fell into disrepair.

Despite its trials, the tower’s resilient spirit endured. Over the years, it found new purpose, serving as a government office, storage facility, and even a temporary detention center. Today, while everyday operations may be a thing of the past, the upper floors of the tower offer a venue for parties and functions, complete with a coffee shop and a viewing deck overlooking the sprawling cityscape.

As one of the few remaining Brutalist towers in Metro Manila, the Mutya ng Pasig Tower stands as a testament to Pasig’s architectural heritage. Its sharp angles, now freshly painted as part of a restoration effort, continue to captivate passersby, serving as a reminder of Pasig’s storied past amidst the ever-evolving urban landscape. Explore this enduring symbol of resilience and preservation, located among the historical places in Pasig, and discover the hidden stories etched within its walls.

15 Historical Places in Pasig City, Philippines - Pasig City Museum / Concepcion Museum

Pasig City Museum (Concepcion Museum)

Pasig’s cultural heritage, where the city’s rich history and artistic treasures come to life at this museum and art gallery.

Once known as the Concepcion Mansion, this storied edifice has witnessed pivotal moments in Pasig’s past. During World War II, it served as a Japanese headquarters and detention facility, bearing witness to the hardships endured by the local community. A beacon of hope emerged on February 19, 1945, when the American flag was proudly raised atop the balcony, marking the end of Japanese control in Pasig and heralding a new chapter of freedom.

In the early 1980s, recognizing the significance of this historic site, the city government acquired the mansion with a vision to preserve Pasig’s cultural heritage. Initially housing the Pasig City Library and Museum, the palace underwent renovations in 2001, becoming solely dedicated to showcasing Pasig’s rich history and artistic legacy. As part of ongoing efforts to honor Pasig’s past, the museum recently underwent a second renovation, ensuring its role as a vital hub of culture and education for generations to come.

Ambrosio Lozada, the father of world famous violinist Carmencita Lozada, opened the first known bakery in Pasig in 1919. The fact that it shared a pen name with national hero Dr. Jose Rizal emphasizes its significance at the period when Pasig was beginning to build a place for itself in the business.

Dimas-Alang Bakery is located in Kapasigan, which was once constituted of Sta. Elena, San Isidro, and Wawa are the riverside sitios. Nothing was more inviting than the delightful aroma of bread floating all around this “baybay ng ilog” at the moment, coaxing locals to stop what they were doing and partake in the town’s all-time favorite snack: the pandesal.

Dimas-Alang would later produce baked pastries inspired by other palates, such as the croissant and French breads. The people of Pasig, on the other hand, were loyal to the pandesal. Other popular items were the aglipay, bonete, biscocho de cana, and “di ko akalain.”

ADDRESS: 52, 1600 A. Mabini Street, Pasig, Metro Manila

During my leisurely stroll through Pasig City, I discovered a treasure trove of fascinating facts about our beloved city. It’s truly heartwarming to witness the dedicated efforts of the local government in preserving our cherished historical landmarks. Before the pandemic, I would often drive past these sites with only a cursory glance, but embarking on a journey as a tourist in my own city has opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounds us.

As I wandered the streets, I couldn’t help but marvel at the rich tapestry of history woven into the fabric of Pasig. Each corner seemed to whisper stories of the past, inviting me to delve deeper into the city’s vibrant heritage. From ancient churches to stately mansions, Pasig’s Historical Places hold the keys to unlocking the secrets of bygone eras.

As I reflected on my newfound appreciation for Pasig’s historical landmarks, I felt a renewed sense of pride in my city’s legacy. It’s a reminder that amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, we mustn’t forget to pause and pay homage to the treasures that have shaped our identity.

So, whether you’re a longtime resident or a visitor passing through, I encourage you to take a moment to explore Pasig’s Historical Places. You never know what hidden gems you might uncover or what fascinating tales you might unearth along the way.

9 Landmarks of Pasig City

immaculate concepcion cathedral

A highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, there’s no question that Pasig City is filled with landmarks. But skyscrapers aside, there are some historical structures worth mentioning within the city itself.

Pasig was once a rural settlement, but slowly evolved into a residential and industrial sector. Over the past few years, it has seen itself develop into a commercial center, largely thanks to the establishment of the Ortigas Center Business District on the eastern side of the city.

Ortigas_Center_Manila

Not far from the NAIA Airport in Pasay City, getting to and from there to the city isn’t that much of an inconvenience, traffic conditions aside.

NOTABLE LANDMARKS

MERALCO – even before the construction of the Ortigas Center in the 1960s, the Meralco building was one of the most noticeable structures in town. Mostly, it was due to its close proximity to EDSA Shrine, which has been a site of too many a political movement. The building houses the offices of the Manila Electric Company and during Christmas time becomes a spectacle itself due to its unique display.

ULTRA – also known as the University of Life Theater and Recreational Area . It is now better known as the Philippine Sports Arena and is where different sporting events, as well as local and international concerts have been held. It was established in 1975 and original facilities, especially the oval and the swimming pool, still remain and are preferred training grounds of athletes.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral – established at around the same time the town was founded in 1573. The Roman Catholic Church is better known as the Pasig Cathedral and is the oldest structure in the city. The church that stands today is a restored one as the original structure suffered damage during the August 1968 earthquake. It was converted into a cathedral on October 2003.

Mutya ng Pasig Public Market – spanning three stories, this is said to be the largest public market in the country. There are more than 2,000 fixed stalls as well as another 2,000 plus used in the flea market on weekends.

Tektite Towers – built in 1993 for the Unified Philippine Stock Exchange. The 34-storey twin towers offer great views of Ortigas Center.

Beaterio de Pasig and Chapel – the remnants of the old chapel of the Beaterio de Santa Rita, or as it’s more popularly known, the Beaterio de Pasig. It was established in 1740 and became a stronghold during the British invasion of 1762. It was heavily damages by the 1880 earthquake and was renovated in the 1960s. Only the facade is what remains of the original chapel.

Bahay Na Tisa – an ancestral home that has been passed on in the Tech family for many generations. It was built by Don Cecilio Tech y Cabrera during the early 1850s. It was called Freedom House during Martial Law and was used for many meetings.

Cuartel del Guardia Civil – better known as the Guanio Residence. It was built in 1881 and converted into a prison for captive Katipuneros. The Guanios then acquired the place.

Pasig City Museum – this was formerly the Concepcion Mansion and was built by Don Fortunato Concepcion in 1937. The Japanese used this as their headquarters and it’s also where the Americans hoisted their flag as a sign of freedom from the Japanese. It was acquired in 1980 by the City of Pasig and was used to house the museum of the city .

According to an American anthropologist named H. Otley Beyer, the first settlers in the city were groups of people of varied cultures and racial types who came to the Philippines in migratory waves during the long period of 25,000 to 30,000 years ago.

At about 1450 A.D. the Pasig was a peaceful kingdom and was being ruled by Dayang Kalangitan, wife of Gat Lontok. It was also said that the people at that time were getting their foods at the river. There were also some who used to wash their clothes there. Others used the river for taking a bath.

Pasig was a part before of Rizal province and served as its capital. However in 1975, it was carved out of Rizal and became part of Metro Manila when the Metro manila Commission was created by President Ferdinand Marcos through Presidential Decree 824.

Pasig continued to grow economically until it was converted into a highly urbanized city on January 21, 1995 through Republic Act 7829.

Filipino Customs and Traditions

Tatak Pasigueño at their Historical Sites

The City Pasig is filled not only with bounty of attractions that is potential for adventure, but it also offers a chance to experience history. The city takes pride in its rich heritage which is well-preserved throughout the years. These historical landmarks continues to fascinate visitors from all over the country because of its splendid features and significance to our history.

Tatak Pasigueño at their Historical Sites

Bahay na Tisa (House of Bricks)

This oldest house in Pasig built by Don Cecilio Tech in 1846 has remained the home of the family over generations. One of his descendants, Dean Carlos Tech, was a noted historian who devoted hours of writing in his cozy study just above the grand staircase. After he passed away in 2001, all of the distinguished educator’s books, including original Spanish volumes, are still displayed on shelves and tables, almost as he had left them. These days, with its Spanish architecture, the house is a much-preferred shooting location for film and television.

Bitukang Manok

The waterway of Bitukang Manok is serpentine like and was a principal part of the Pasig River. The Spaniards named the river as “Rio de Pasig,” however, the people continued to refer to it among themselves as Bitukang Manok. The first sketch of Bitukang Manok or Pasig River became known as the Pariancillo River where its bank flourished as the public market up to 1970’s. Likewise, the Bitukang Manok contributed immensely to the economic prosperity of Pasig since time immemorial, by irrigating its rice plains.

The Bitukang Manok links the Pasig River with the Antipolo River. During the 17th up to the early 20th century, many pilgrims from Manila and nearby towns took the route of Bitukang Manok to the Shrine in Antipolo. Even the image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage passed this way back and forth eleven times. In the 18th century, the Gremio de Mestizos de Sangley or Chinese Mestizos built a concrete covered bridge in the style of a pagoda over this waterway. It was called Pariancillo Bridge and later, Fray Felix Trillo Bridge in honor of Pasig’s dynamic pastor.

CUARTEL DEL GUARDIA CIVIL (Guanio Residence)

This was built in 1881 by Don Apolonio Santiago y Domingo, gobernadorcillo of Pasig. In 1894, it was transformed into the Cuartel del Guardia Civil. During the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, suspected Katipuneros were imprisoned, tortured and died here. After the Filipino-American War, it was acquired by Doña Clara Tambunting de Oliveros and in 1922 by En gineer and Mrs. Domingo Guanio.

DIMAS-ALANG BAKERY

This is the first known bakery in Pasig which was put up in the year 1919 by Ambrosio Lozada – the father of the internationally known violinist Carmencita Lozada. The fact that it shared a pen name with national hero Dr. Jose Rizal all the more establishes its significance in the days when Pasig was starting to carve a name in entrepreneurship.

Kapasigan then, where Dimas-Alang Bakery is located, was composed of Sta. Elena, San Isidro and Wawa, the sitios by the river edge. During that time, there was nothing as enticing as the sweet scent of bread wafting all over this “baybay ng ilog”, coaxing townsfolk to pause from what they’re doing and partake of the town’s ever favorite snack: the pandesal.

In the succeeding years, Dimas-Alang would introduce baked goods inspired by foreign palates – the croissant and French breads, for example. But the Pasig folks remained loyal to the pandesal. Other favorites that saw brisk sale were the aglipay, the bonete, biscocho de cana and the “di ko akalain”.

San Antonio Abad Church - Maybunga

A distinct feature of the community is the centuries-old chapel which the Spanish missionaries, with the help of the natives of the community, built. In it is enshrined the community’s patron saint, San Antonio Abad. The patron saint is believed to help the residents in many ways, such as in bringing about a good rice harvest, progress and prosperity.

PINAGBUHATAN SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH

From a small chapel, a bigger church was built in Pinagbuhatan. It was inaugurated on 6 May 1990 by His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila. In 31 May 1990, a decree was signed creating San Sebastian Church as a Parish of the Diocese of Pasig. Likewise in 12 June 1990, Rev. Fr. David Colong was solemnly installed as its first parish priest.

TRIBUNALll DE MESTIZOS

The old building of the Gremio de Mestizos was located in one corner of the Plaza Rizal. It became the Municipal Hall in 1959. Today, it no longer exists except in photographs and oil paintings.

The Tribunal de Mestizos or the Gremio de Mestizos was established after the Spaniards organized the Chinese population of Pasig in 1741. The tribunal is for those of mixed Spanish or Chinese ancestry. It functioned as a municipal government which performed legislative and judicial functions restricted only to members.

Plaza de Rizal

Located just across the first city hall of Pasig, Plaza Rizal stands in honor of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The plaza is also in the middle of a number of other historical sites in the area, among them, the Pasig Cathedral, the Pasig City Museum and Bahayna Tisa (House of Bricks).

Pasig Museum

This museum and art center houses the city’s historical and art treasures. Built in 1937, it was formerly known as the Concepcion Mansion, which was also a Japanese headquarters and detention house during the war. On February 19, 1945, the American flag was raised on the balcony to signal the end of Japanese occupation in Pasig. In the early 1980s, the mansion was acquired by the city government to accommodate the Pasig City Library and Museum. After its initial renovation in 2001, the museum became its sole occupant, as the Pasig Library moved to another location. The Museum has only recently undergone a second renovation as part of the administration’s objective of upholding the city’s historical and artistic legacy.

RIZAL BOY SCOUT COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS

Don Fortunato Concepcion donated the land and building of the Rizal Council Boy Scouts Headquarter. This edifice provided the prestige of the Rizal Province as the first class council and signaled a great stride in the advancement of the Scouting movement. This building was constructed in January 1949 and was completed and made ready for occupancy in one and a half month’s time.

Andres Bonifacio Monument

A cenotaph originally constructed in 1932, this monument pays tribute to the courage and leadership of the great Katipunero. Bonifacio headed the KatipunanAssemblea Magna, which launched the revolution known among local historians as Nagsabado.

Bahay Kuwago

This venue for clandestine meetings of the Katipuneroswas a hollow among thickets where ULTRA’s amphitheater now lies. It is interesting to find a trace of history where modern edifices such as a sports complex and an international school have risen.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

In 1587, the Immaculate Conception became the patroness of the Augustinian convent in Pasig. This cathedral held various treasures, among them the “Retablo,” which depicted an almost tropical motif, with palm trees and wells, and included the basic structure of the old church of Pasig – the dome and the tower – formerly known as “Solomon’s Temple.”

It was during the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1941 that former Mayor CiprianoRaymundo halted the procession to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Nurturing your mind in the great history of Pasig is a good stuff. Visit the city and feel their living museum of spirited past.

Getting around For a reluctant tourist, the optimal way of going about the city may be hopping into a cab and allowing it to take you on a perfunctory tour. On the other hand, going by any of the public transports available affords you a full experience of Pasig City, teeming with culture and heritage. On EDSA, you can either take the bus – both northbound and southbound buses stop in front of Robinson’s Galleria, a perfect place to start – or the Metro Rail Transit. The MRT stops at the Ortigas Station from which Robinson’s Galleria is but a leisurely stroll. From Galleria, navigating the rest of Ortigas Center’s “jewel” streets on foot is best. The quintessentially Filipino ride known as the “jeepney” goes the Pasig-Quiapo (and vice versa) route, which has existed for decades, and travels from the western side of Shaw Boulevard. The modern and cooler spin-off of the jeepney – the “FX” - is available at a terminal on the north side of Robinson’s Galleria.
