Pearl Jam Xcel St. Paul 2023

Pearl Jam kicks off 2023 tour at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul

Pearl Jam returned to the Twin Cities for the first time since their 2014 performance at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul . The sold-out arena was buzzing for the band’s tour kickoff and first show of 2023. As an ode to the band’s MTV Unplugged performance from 1992, the band started with stripped down versions of several songs that had singer Eddie Veddar, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, and bassist Jeff Ament seated.

“Indifference” from their excellent 1993 album Vs. started the show and was goosebump-inducing. Eddie Veddar’s voice was pure and beautiful. Five songs in they played “Black” from their classic debut Ten . Half-ways through the song guitarist Mike McCready kicked his chair back and stood up to play a bending solo that had everyone in the crowd cheering. Before the end of the song, the rest of the members stood one by one and it was a great way to transition into the more rocking part of the show.

Other big highlights of the show were “Even Flow”, “Daughter”, and a raucous “Superblood Wolfmoon” from their 2020 release Gigaton . All night the band was dialed in and sounded refreshed. Drummer Matt Cameron was a joy to watch and smiled frequently throughout the show as he bashed on his Yamaha kit and Zildjian cymbals. McCready is an incredible guitarist and his solos were spot-on throughout the show. Eddie Veddar’s commentary between songs was stammering and long-winded at times however, at one point touching on the recent weather tragedies in Maui and California.

After the encore break, Veddar returned to the stage solo with an acoustic guitar. He muttered on for several minutes about death and loss and how McCready used to hang out with Tom Petty and smoke weed, before playing a very loose rendition of Petty’s classic “Wildflowers”. It was a relief when the rest of the band joined him for an acoustic version of “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” which they played at the back of the stage facing those in the cheap seats. The band returned to their main instruments and rocked through the edgy and upbeat “Go” from Vs. . The night ended with lights on in the arena and everyone singing along to the band’s classic song “Yellow Ledbetter”.

Pearl Jam at Xcel Energy Center was good but there were plenty of boring moments that took away from the great ones. The band’s fanbase is fervent through it all and I enjoyed watching them sing along to nearly every song with enthusiasm. Although I’m a big fan of Matt Cameron’s drumming, Pearl Jam has never quite done it for me. Some songs during this performance were absolutely amazing and had me wondering if I was being converted over. But in the end, my viewpoint on the band didn’t change much.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, subscriber only, music and concerts | just like old times: pearl jam delivers a high-energy show at xcel energy center.

A band plays on an orange-lit stage

Pearl Jam almost had us going for a while there. For the first half-hour of its tour-opening concert at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center Thursday night, it looked as if the last survivors of the early ‘90s grunge scene were at last acting their age.

The Seattle quintet opened their set seated and strumming like a clutch of folkies gathered on a back porch, even the legendary high-energy frontman Eddie Vedder swiveling on his stool like a grandfather at his work bench. One thunderous rocker after another was getting the mostly acoustic treatment, the opening “Indifference” giving way to the more recent “Buckle Up.” But buckling up didn’t seem to be necessary. It looked like a mellow evening was in store.

A man sings into a microphone

Vedder even paused to talk of his daughters recently reintroducing him to the “MTV Unplugged” show the band recorded in 1992 and muse upon how enjoyable it might be to do something like that again.

But it was all a ruse. The volume and adrenaline gradually rose with each song before lead guitarist Mike McCready kicked his folding wooden chair aside during the fifth number and rose to launch into a soaring guitar solo on “Black” from the band’s 1991 debut album. Soon Vedder was up, then guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, and the rocking had clearly begun.

And it continued on into the night, as a mostly middle-age sellout crowd stayed on its feet and thrashed about with abandon to a consistently passionate set of music by a legendary live act that still thrills with its raucous rock. Exciting throughout, it was a set that thundered and thrashed, howled and cried, each member of the band pogoing and sprinting about as if it were 1992 all over again.

OK, Vedder doesn’t climb up light standards and toss himself into the crowd the way he did at Lollapalooza on St. Paul’s Harriet Island back then, but he stood atop the monitors at the stage’s lip and tossed his microphone stand like a javelin, leaning into the enthusiastic crowd to wail his lyrics in one of the most distinctive baritone voices rock has ever produced. Meanwhile, McCready sprinted in circles like a man half his age.

Such was the energy throughout a 20-song, 100-minute set, the crowd singing along at a volume level that often drowned out Vedder. They could be reverent and reflective on “Given to Fly,” only to erupt like a volcano on “Even Flow,” the lower bowl of the Xcel Center looking like a swarm of swirling movement as the rocking reached what could have been its peak… but kept getting increasingly intense.

Yes, there were times when the unplugged aesthetic returned, such as on another from the early ‘90s, “Daughter.” But even that became another rumbling rocker that led to a half-dozen more.

For an encore, Vedder took the stage in a solo setting, picking a 12-string acoustic guitar and paying tribute to Tom Petty with his gentle ballad, “Wildflowers.” Soon, the band joined him and turned the presentation around, delivering a lovely take on “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” to those seated behind the stage, yet having the entire audience belt out the chorus, just as they’d been doing for most of the evening.

But soon the rock returned with “Alive,” the audience reaching the evening’s consummate crescendo by howling out “I’m still alive” as if their lives depended on it.

“Alive” And Well: Pearl Jam Performs First Show Of 2023 In Minnesota [Review/Videos]

The first fans started lining up in St. Paul at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, a full two days before the scheduled start time of the first Pearl Jam of 2023. Just days removed from the 32nd anniversary of the band’s debut album, Ten (1991) , and nearly a year after its last performance (Denver, CO, 9/22/22), fans’ Pearl Jam devotion remained as fervent as ever.

Eddie Vedder and company made sure it was worth the wait for all when the time finally came, delivering a 24-song set that included surprises, setlist rarities, and career-spanning hits.

“Indifference” opened the night, the first surprise of the night as the Vs. (1993) selection and usual encore was given show opening duties for the first time since 1994. The band’s first five songs spanned five different albums as the musicians remained seated through a run of “Buckle Up” (Gigaton, 2020), “Sometimes” (No Code, 1996), and “Wishlist” (Yield, 1998), before rising to their feet by “Black” ( Ten ), one of the night’s definitive highlights and another relative rarity given its early placement in the set.

“Given To Fly” brought the crowd energy to a fever pitch ahead of a stirring telling of “Mind Your Manners” ( Lightning Bolt , 2013). The set continued cooking with bangers “Why Go”, “Seven O’Clock”, “Even Flow”, and “Dance Of The Clairvoyants”, drummer Matt Cameron driving the beat before things cooled down with “I’m Open”, a deep cut from No Code (1996).

A flawless performance of “Insignificance” followed as the Binaural (2000) track returned to the setlist for the first time in 74 shows, dating back to 2016. “Daughter” was next before “Superblood Wolfmoon” played homage to the recent, rare “Super Blue Moon.”

Given the recent wildfires in Hawaii, Mr. Vedder then got a little teary as he recognized the band’s Hawaiian keyboardist, Boom Gaspar , with whom he co-wrote “Love Boat Captain”, a Riot Act (2002) selection making the setlist for just the second time in five years.

Jeff Ament made his presence known on an 8-string bass on “State Of Love and Trust” before an emphatic version of “Porch” closed the main set and shattered any remaining doubt as to the power and form of modern day Pearl Jam. Sure, sets have been reduced in both song length and duration, and the band rarely plays back-to-back nights anymore to protect Vedder’s vocal register—is anyone else headed to the Minnesota State Fair today???—but Pearl Jam in 2023 is still, well, Pearl Jam and fans continue to be more than justified in flying anywhere in the world and sleeping on local sidewalks just to get close to the action.

Underscoring their legendary and personal connection to fans, Eddie Vedder could be seen passing a Minnesota Twins baseball helmet to a fan celebrating his birthday in the front row, the same gentleman whose sequined jacket he donned earlier during “Dance Of The Clairvoyants”. Later, he would toss a tambourine to a 9-year-old fan rocking out by stage right, an interaction captured in a wholesome video captured by her mother .

Making people feel special is what Vedder does, and he was once again emotional as he dedicated the night’s first cover to all the great musicians recently lost via a solo reading of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers”, played for just the second time ever (song begins at 8:20).

The band then turned to face the back as 20,000+ belted out the lyrics to the longest title in the Pearl Jam catalog, “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town”. “Go” followed with quintessentially over-the-top energy from melt-your-face guitarist extraordinaire Mike McCready before Stone Gossard and Vedder ushered in Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” with haunting dual guitars that soon gave way to Gaspar’s swelling organ.

Thirty-two years since its inclusion as the final track on Ten and 819 live performances later, “Alive” is still the single most impactful song in Pearl Jam’s storied catalog. At about the halfway point, the room’s red glow gave way to house lights, the band and fans alike savoring the moment and rejoicing as the fresh afterglow of a live Pearl Jam concert began to wash over them.

As Eddie Vedder crooned the garbled lyrics to “Yellow Ledbetter”, a standard nightcap from 2003’s Lost Dogs collection of B-sides and unreleased rarities—the 9th album to lend a track to this career spanning show–Mike McCready’s fretboard fireworks put the finishing touches on a stellar opening to Pearl Jam’s 2023 calendar.

Pearl Jam returns to the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN this Saturday before their brief fall tour visits Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, and Austin. Full details can be found here . View the setlist from the first St. Paul show below.

Pearl Jam has announced a slew of new 2023 US tour dates, which will kick off in Minneapolis in August.

The iconic grunge band will perform nine shows in August and September, making stops in St. Paul, Chicago, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, and Austin. It will be joined by special guests Inhaler as support for the dates in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Austin, with the opening act for the other shows to be announced in the coming weeks.

With the new tour dates, Pearl Jam will try to protect fans by giving access to fairly priced tickets, the majority of which will be provided to members of its Ten Club fan club. Tickets will be non-transferable in all states except Illinois, where it is prohibited by law. In a press release, the band apologized to fans in the state “who may be subject to increased ticket prices on the secondary market.”

PJ Premium tickets will also be sold, with those seats located in a variety of preferred locations and will account for approximately 10 percent of the ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available through a Verified Fan sale, along with regularly priced tickets.

The 2023 US tour marks the first time Pearl Jam will use all-in pricing, which means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of fees.

A special pre-sale for members of the Ten Club who held membership on April 19, 2023, will begin today. General public tickets will then be sold through Ticketmaster Verified Fan, which requires advance registration. The registration window is open now through 5pm PT on April 25 –  you can register here . The Verified Fan sale will then begin on April 28 at 10am local time.

Last year, Pearl Jam committed to addressing its carbon footprint as a touring band with an initiative that saw the band pledging to pay $200 per ton of CO2 used on its Gigaton tour. Globally, the carbon offset market varies, but the average amount paid per ton of CO2 is between $1-15.

Watch: PEARL JAM Plays First Show Of 2023 In Minnesota

PEARL JAM kicked off its short U.S. tour last night (Thursday, August 31) at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The band's first live performance of 2023 saw the Eddie Vedder -fronted outfit play the first five songs seated, opening with "Indifference" , the last song on the band's sophomore album, "Vs." . The rest of the 24-song set included covers of Tom Petty 's "Wildflowers" and Victoria Williams 's "Crazy Mary" . At one point in the set, Vedder took a moment to address the devastating wildfire damage in Maui, where he and his family own a home.

PEARL JAM will perform at the same venue tonight and will be on the road through a two-night stand in Austin, Texas on September 18-19. At the end of this month, Vedder will play with his side band EARTHLINGS at his annual Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California, to be followed by two solo benefit concerts at Seattle's Benaroya Hall on October 23-24.

PEARL JAM 's setlist for last night's show was as follows:

01. Indifference 02. Buckle Up 03. Sometimes 04. Wishlist 05. Black 06. Given To Fly 07. Mind Your Manners 08. Why Go 09. Seven O'Clock 10. Even Flow 11. Dance Of The Clairvoyants 12. I'm Open 13. 2020 officially marked 30 years of PEARL JAM performing live. Eleven studio albums, hundreds of unique live performances and official live concert bootleg releases later, the band continues to be critically acclaimed and commercially successful — with over 85 million albums sold worldwide. PEARL JAM was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017.

PEARL JAM 's latest album, "Gigaton" , was released in March 2020. Featuring fan favorites "Dance Of The Clairvoyants" , "Superblood Wolfmoon" and "Quick Escape" , the album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 's Top Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums, and Billboard Vinyl Albums Chart. In addition, it hit Top 5 on Billboard 200 chart, No. 2 on Billboard Top Album Sales chart and to date has reached over 200 million global streams. The album was critically acclaimed, with Entertainment Weekly raving, "It's a sturdy rock album from five guys who know what they're doing, took time till they had something to say, are interpolating new influences and sound stoked to be back together in a room."

Come see PEARL JAM, now with special guest DEEP SEA DIVER, at Xcel Energy Center on August 31 and September 2! Secure... Posted by Xcel Energy Center on  Monday, July 10, 2023

Review: pearl jam gets friendly on second galvanizing night in st. paul.

"Tonight is about friends," Eddie Vedder said early Saturday during Pearl Jam's second performance this week at Xcel Energy Center.

His friends like Joe Mauer, the former Twins great, who was in the audience. Friends like Bo, who had been to about 50 Pearl Jam shows but they'd finally just met. "Bo, where have you been all my life? So close," Vedder said.

Friends like Charlie, a Wisconsin youngster who recently died of epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Friends like Dr. Jakub Tolar, who leads a University of Minnesota EB research team funded in part by Vedder's family.

Instant new friends like the guy in front of the stage wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with "Pearl Jam is my drug."

Old friends like Rich Best, the former First Avenue booker who hired Pearl Jam and its members' other bands like Mother Love Bone into 7 th Street Entry and First Ave back in the day. Vedder invited Best, now an executive VP at Live Nation in Los Angeles, onstage for a handshake and a hug.

Not sure if any of the other 18,000 people at the X felt unfriended, but they sure experienced one unforgettably galvanizing night of timeless rock (no need to call it grunge anymore).

This veteran Seattle ensemble, one of the biggest bands of the 1990s, remains one of the best live rock bands touring today. These Rock Hall of Famers are so respected by their fans — many of whom wore Pearl Jam T-shirts from different tours and cities as well as new ones custom-made for St. Paul's two-night stand — that there were surprisingly few cellphones out during the performance.

Vedder, 58, was friendly, committed, passionate, compassionate, intense and physical, though not the light rigging-climbing frontman of old (he did jump off of two-foot high speakers on Saturday). The rhythm section of drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Jeff Ament (who wore a T-shirt honoring the Duluth band Low) was solid and driving, abetted by rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard. And the lead guitar work of Mike McCready was consistently heroic, elevating the tunes to new heights.

Like Thursday's opening night of PJ's first tour of 2023, Saturday's reprise lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours and featured 25 tunes, one more than the earlier gig. Five selections were repeaters — "Daughter," "Even Flow," "Porch," "Alive" and "Elderly Woman behind the Counter in a Small Town." Numbers were drawn from all 11 Pearl Jam studio albums.

Saturday's crowd was treated to three PJ classics, "Jeremy," "Better Man" and "I Am Mine," which weren't in Thursday's repertoire. Second show deep tracks included "Got Some" and "Severed Hand."

As for Saturday's covers, Pearl Jam offered Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage," Wayne Cochran's "Last Kiss" (played to the crowd behind the stage), a solo Vedder version of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" (dedicated to his late friend Charlie) and a reading of Prince's "Purple Rain" — with opening act Deep Sea Diver sitting in — as the finale (the first time Pearl Jam has played it in the Purple One's home state).

After having spent a few days in the Twin Cities, Vedder got a little goofy Saturday when talking about newly legalized pot (his word) in Minnesota. He reminisced about how he and drummer Cameron used to smoke pot in San Diego "too early — in our lives and too early in the day. Back then you couldn't hurt yourself because you were getting it from a guy listening to Jimmy Buffett on the beach." Now, he said, pot is sometimes cut with harmful substances.

"Start with a little Indica," he suggested, referring to a reportedly calming marijuana strain. "And then start a group called the Indica Girls."

Some stoner jokes won't even garner laughter from friends.

Here is Saturday's set list:

The crowd is loud early on Pendulum, surprising Ed and jumpstarting the energy in the building on Saturday night, and makes their presence known again on Small Town. Mike starts Nothing As It Seems even though Nothingman was next on the setlist, his chair finding it hard to contain the blasts of sound coming from his guitar. Daughter features the Wet Leg “Chaise Lounge” tag that surfaced in 2022. Evolution is fiery, Stone blazes on the final solo. Last Exit is fast, Matt pounding away during the intro like his life depends on it. Who Ever Said is dedicated to Joe Mauer. Immediately after, Ed starts playing Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” (“…the lunatic is on the grass…) and they segue right into I Am Mine. This is the first appearance of “Brain Damage” since 2010, when it was used as an intro to Corduroy. Ed introduces Take The Long Way with “…this one’s for the travelers…” Mike goes behind the back for the start of the Even Flow solo and then stalks around his side of the stage like a man possessed for the rest, leading to this exchange:

Ed : “When did you start playing like that? Did it scare you?” Mike : “I’m scared right now…”

After the song, Ed talks about how marijuana is legal in Minnesota now, and that he and Matt smoked a lot in together when they were younger, although they didn’t know each other, being at Cheap Trick and Queen shows at the San Diego Sports Arena. He also mentions Jimmy Buffett (who passed earlier in the day) and cautions against smoking the “AK-47-Afghan-Hindo-Kush-Mega-Bomb-Pull-And-Glow-Ozzy-Osbourne-Paranoia-Purple-Hair-Mega-Bible” if you haven’t practiced, adding “start with Indica and then start a group called the ‘Indica Girls’…this song’s about being offered something that you haven’t done your research on…” and Severed Hand is brought back for the first time since 2018. In Hiding is a request, Ed says. The band convenes to talk, Ed sees a shirt in the front row that says “Pearl Jam is my drug” and asks the fan if they have a request. The request is for Undone, which Ed denies, saying “that’s going to stay undone…” and they go into Unthought Known off Backspacer , making this a main set where every studio album is represented. The end of Corduroy surges, the whole band pushing like it’s the end of the set but then Ed starts Porch. Jeff has some spectacular bass runs during the first verse on Porch, propulsive and fluid.

During the break, the crowd brings out the fireflies and Ed is seemingly speechless as he comes out solo. He mentions Dale Crover of the Melvins who recently had to have emergency spinal surgery, and wishes him well, then transitions into talking about EB, talking about a young boy named Charlie who passed away, showing a picture of him with Ed on the big screen and then in his “Puck EB” shirt. A touching moment and Ed leads into I Won’t Back Down, with the crowd taking some of the lead vocals. Ed says “we’re gonna play a quick club show in the back” and they turn around for Last Kiss. Got Some also reappears for the first time since 2018. After Jeremy, Ed, just like on night 1, mentions Stone and Jeff playing together for so long and that there was a local guy who booked Mother Love Bone at the 7th Street Entry (small club in Minneapolis), and that “between Jeff and Stone and Boom and Josh, and a couple of crew guys, there are more people on stage right now than there were in the crowd that evening,” and brings up the booking agent, now an Executive Vice President Booking at LiveNation, Rich Best. Ed starts a call-and-response on Better Man and riffs on the Save it for Later lyrics before kicking in the “…don’t run away” lines. Another band meeting on stage after leads to Stone starting off Alive. More conversation on stage afterwards, Ed says they need some “conflict resolution” about what to play next, but that they can’t leave St. Paul without playing this one, Purple Rain. Josh comes out to sing and play guitar and opening band Deep Sea Diver joins on stage to sing and play tambourines. An energetic show with a stellar crowd.

August 31, 2023 – Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN, USA

Main Set: Indifference, Buckle Up, Sometimes, Wishlist, Black/(We Belong Together), Given To Fly, Mind Your Manners, Why Go, Seven O'Clock, Even Flow, Dance Of The Clairvoyants, I'm Open, Insignificance, Daughter, Superblood Wolfmoon, Love Boat Captain, State Of Love And Trust, Porch

The band comes out seated, just like the US leg in 2022. Indifference is a surprise opener, it’s only the 3rd time it’s opened a show, the last time was Denver 1994! Ed gets a guitar brought to him as Buckle Up is finishing up for Sometimes, which has a little intensity to it before the end. Stone starts Black immediately after, but Ed stops him, saying “I’m anxious to play that too…but I wanted to say something I haven’t been able to say in 10 years…hello Minneapolis! Hello St. Paul!” and talks about how they were practicing in Seattle about 10 days ago and heard the news about the earthquake and hurricane in California. It’s not Black that’s played next, but Wishlist. Ed talks again afterwards, telling a story about his wife and daughters watching PJ’s MTV Unplugged performance from 1992. He says “…the girls liked it…I don’t think we remember it AT ALL…,” adding that they had just come off a European tour, and mentions the 2/19/92 show in Winterthur where the stage was too small so they played an acoustic show. Black is then played, and the chairs are removed. Mike has a soulful, powerful solo. The 500th performance of Given to Fly is next, a nice milestone 25 years out from Yield . Seven O’Clock is prefaced with “this one’s off the new record that’s 2 1/2 years old…it came out 3 days before COVID hit…” and Ed growls “…we had Sitting Bullshit as our fucked up president…” He looks up into the rafters and talks about the Twins, mentioning Justin Morneau specifically. The Even Flow solo has a slow build, but Mike lets loose not too far in as Ed says hello to the people in the back and meanders around the stage. Josh Klinghoffer, helping out again on this tour, gets a shoutout, and Ed tells a story about warming up in the hotel shower earlier in the day, when he turned off the water he heard someone harmonizing with him in the next room over, and it turned out to be Simon LeBon from Duran Duran (who played at the Minnesota State Fair a few miles away tonight). Ed then admits “…no it wasn’t…I don’t know who it was.” During Dance of the Clairvoyants, Ed sees two fans, Solomon and Jason, on the rail wearing sequin jackets and borrows one of them for the song, adding after that it’s Jason’s birthday. Insignificance appears in the set for the first time since the Binaural show in Toronto in 2016. Mike’s son, on the side of the stage, hands him some picks and gives him a hug. Before Daughter, Ed mentions that Stone and Jeff have had a working relationship for “39.9 years.” Boom starts the Love Boat Captain intro and Ed talks over it about the recent fires in Hawaii and his history there, surfing in 1993 and more, getting choked up a little and adding:

“…it [Hawaii] gave me songs, it gave me isolation, it gave me inspiration, it gave me waves…also a B3 player in Mr. Boom Gaspar, and we wrote this one together…”

They start LBC with a jam intro before the verse, and Ed changes the line to “…let the healing begin…” He mentions playing at First Ave. in Minneapolis in 1991 before State, “we played this song there.” After the break, Ed again mentions Justin Morneau, saying they went to the Twins game the previous day. He talks about Tom Petty (PJ opened for Petty in this building in 2006) and how Tom and Mike had struck up a friendship and smoked a lot of pot together. He continues, mentioning how in a short span we lost Bowie and Prince, and has another name on the tip of his tongue but can’t say it, getting choked up again (Cornell no doubt). There’s an issue in the crowd, someone needs help, they are taken care of and Ed keeps going, saying this next one is for someone who lost someone close to them recently, and it’s the first non-preset appearance of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” at a PJ show. The band returns and Small Town is played to the back. Boom calls Mike over for the Crazy Mary solos, very playful and celebratory. Ed gets the crowd going on Alive, everyone throwing up their hands in unison. Ledbetter closes out an emotional night with lots of storytelling. No Vitalogy songs are played, the first time that’s happened since night 1 in Philadelphia 2016.

Release lyric is changed to “Dear Ron…” Nice solo/jam to end Lightning Bolt. Before Save You, Ed says “this one’s called ‘Get off your knees, motherfucker, I’m your friend and I’m not going to let you die’,” then does a short call and response with the crowd, going high, and commenting “not bad for a bunch of manly men from Minnesota.” Mike is fluid and expressive on Even Flow. Ed gets more intricate on the Sirens outro, adding some vocal inflections. A powerful Love Boat Captain again opens with a jam intro, and later, during the ending jam, Ed adds some lyrics from “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” before doing the “Love” call and response to end it. Before I Got Id, Ed sees a Canadian flag and mentions that the next song was written with a Canadian friend of theirs, Neil Young. Following The Fixer, Ed praises the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital for their work on EB, and invites the Dean of the Medical School, Jakub Tolar, on stage. Ed discusses his work and says he gave a tour of the UM facilities to Ed and Stone the day before, so Ed gives him a tour of Pearl Jam’s “facilities” on stage, after which Dr. Tolar speaks and thanks the band, and Ed starts Unthought Known immediately after he finishes. The RVM jam is melodic and atmospheric.

After the break, Ed jokes about how he doesn’t know what day of the week it is and that he’s falling apart, blaming Matt’s drumming for his hearing loss and staring at the sun for his loss of vision. Thin Air is dedicated to Gabriella with “sometimes people are like a fine wine…sometimes, the best ones are Italian.” Ed does a gender reveal for a couple in the crowd, just as Porch begins they find out it’s a boy. Stone starts Alive after Black, and Ed waves him off, leading to a little jazz improv break before playing Setting Forth instead. As Better Man transitions into Save It For Later, Ed urges the crowd on, saying “I know it’s late, let’s keep going!” The house lights go up for Indifference, and before he starts singing, he offers:

“hey, if we ever happen to meet somewhere…Mexico, South America, Texas, Seattle, Chicago…if there’s a way…just tell me you were here, the drinks are on me…”
