St. louis hosting two pro events this week as apga, pga tour champions visit the gateway city, share this article.

There’s going to be no shortage of options for golf fans in St. Louis to quench their thirst this weekend.

The PGA Tour Champions and Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour are both in the Gateway City, and there’s a bit of connection between the two events.

The Ascension Classic, the launch event of APGA’s Farmers Insurance Fall Series, will be the circuit’s first visit to St. Louis. Meanwhile, the second Champions tour returns for the second Ascension Charity Classic.

On Wednesday, the APGA will play its pro-am at Norwood Hills Country Club, site of the Champions tour event. There will also be a practice round at Glen Echo Country Club, where Thursday and Friday the APGA will play its 36-hole event.

Tim O’Neal is also going to make some history in St. Louis. After turning 50 in August, O’Neal received the first-ever exemption for an APGA Tour player into a PGA Tour Champions event, so O’Neal will tee it up with other legends of the game.

The Ascension Charity Classic begins Friday and concludes Sunday. David Toms is the defending champion.

The St. Louis sports scene keeps getting better and better.

On Tuesday at Norwood Hills Country Club, in North County, the PGA announced that the PGA Tour Champions—a group of professional golfers age 50 and older, including 33 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame—will begin a four-year tour in partnership with the nonprofit Catholic health care system Ascension in 2020. According to a release from the PGA, the new Ascension Charity Classic is the first time the PGA Tour has hosted an annual event in the St. Louis region since 2001. The tournament is scheduled September 28 to October 4, 2020. Golfer Phil Mickelson is just one of many stars set to turn 50 in the coming year.

The inaugural tournament will be 54 holes and feature World Golf Hall of Fame members; the PGA Tour Champions includes 27 tournaments in four countries and 19 states. The Ascension Charity Classic will benefit the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. Marygrove, a residential facility for children and teens, is also a beneficiary.

The location holds significance. In a release, Nick Ragone, the executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Ascension said: “We wanted to host the Ascension Charity Classic at Norwood Hills because we know that it can serve as a catalyst to support the revitalization of North St. Louis County, including the Ferguson, Florissant and Jennings communities that neighbor the Norwood Hills Country Club. Players may compete, but the real winners will be North County and area charities. All proceeds will go to charitable organizations in the North County area that are working to build a better community. It’s a privilege to be able to be a part of the continued revitalization of our community and our region.”

Norwood Hills hosted the 1948 PGA Championship.

In a release, PGA Tour Champions President Miller Brady said that "the St. Louis area is one of the great sports regions in the United States, known for its passionate, dedicated fans and history of charitable giving and community engagement. This combination of great sports fans, community engagement and charitable giving is what the PGA Tour is all about, and this will quickly become one of our premier events.”

Champions Golf Event Promises to Provide a Boost for North County

By Stu Durando, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The initial pitch for St. Louis to host a tournament on the PGA Tour Champions was made with a stipulation, and it was important enough that organizers weren’t willing to bend.

The event was to be held at Norwood Hills Country Club or it wouldn’t be held.

Although busy through the years, the facility has not hosted a major professional tournament since 1973. But the selection of Norwood Hills, which is in Jennings, was about more than golf.

It was about bringing a charity event to north St. Louis County and pumping money into organizations and the community.

“Creating this was really contingent upon holding it in North County,” said Nick Ragone, executive vice president for Ascension. “That was the one condition we had as we started discussions. The tour came out and took a look and understood the vision.”

PGA announces return to Bellerive in 2026 for BMW Championship

ST. LOUIS– The PGA Tour is coming back to the St. Louis region in 2026.

The BMW Championship, part of the FedEx playoff series that ends the PGA season, announced Tuesday that the event will be held at Bellerive Country Club in Town and Country in 2026.

𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡. We're coming back to Baltimore and St. Louis in 2025 and 2026. ⁣ #BMWCHAMPS pic.twitter.com/UeK7bAwyIj — BMW Championship (@BMWchamps) August 16, 2022

The club last hosted the PGA Championship in 2018, an event marked by record crowds (the PGA doesn’t confirm records), a remarkable charge by Tiger Woods, and ultimately a title won by Brooks Koepka. Players and tour officials said at the time they couldn’t wait to return to the course.

The club hosted the same event in 1992, the 2004 U.S. Senior Open in 2004, the BMW Championship in 2008 and the 2013 Senior PGA Championship.

The 2001 WGC American Express Championship would have been played at Bellerive, but the September 11 terrorist attacks prompted the event’s cancellation.

The course is scheduled to host the 2030 President’s Cup, a format that pits an American team of golfers against an international team made up of non-European players.

Norwood Hills in North St. Louis County, is getting ready to host the Ascension Charity Classic, featuring Senior PGA player, in September.

Scottie Scheffler wins RBC Heritage, fourth in 5 PGA Tour events

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - APRIL 21: Scottie Scheffler looks to hit a tee shot on the 10th hole during the final round of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links on April 21, 2024 in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

Scottie Scheffler’s season of excellence continued Sunday at the RBC Heritage. He finished it up on Monday with a three-stroke victory, claiming the event’s signature tartan jacket to go with his green jacket.

He’s the first player to win four starts in a five-star stretch since Tiger Woods in 2007-08. He’s the first person since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to follow up a Masters win with a win the following week (Langer also won at Harbour Town). Gary Player in 1978 and Jimmy Demaret in 1950 also accomplished the feat.

Scheffler has also won the Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational during this stretch. In the Houston Open, he finished in a tie for second, and missed a putt to force a playoff. Scheffler now has 10 career wins, all since February 2022.

“I’m just maturing as a person. On the course mentally the last month or so is as good mentally as I’ve been in a long time, and I think that’s why I’m seeing some of the results,” Scheffler told Golf Channel after the win.

Play was called due to darkness Sunday at the event at Harbour Town Links in Hilton Head, S.C., with Scheffler five strokes ahead and three holes to play. There was a 2 1/2 hour weather delay from 4:28 p.m. until 7 p.m. that forced the PGA Tour into a Monday finish.

When he returned Scheffler finished the final three holes in 45 minutes. His bogey on 18 was his first bogey of the week. Sahith Theegala finished second at 16-under, with Wyndham Clark and Patrick Cantlay tied for third at 15-under. Justin Thomas was among the group tied for fifth, a good week for the embattled star.

Scheffler punctuated Sunday with a head-shaking 15th hole — he had an exceedingly rare mishit with his second shot, going just left into the water. As he was taking the drop, CBS attempted to foreshadow what was coming by flashing a graphic that it had been 65 holes since Scheffler had a double bogey. The streak continued. He hit his approach shot with spin, landed on the slope and rolled it to 11 feet. The horn sounded to end play but Scheffler was allowed to finish the hole — he drained the putt, pumped his fist like he had just won the tournament and exited to a waiting golf cart.

Scheffler did not show up at Hilton Head until Wednesday after winning his second Masters, played nine holes in the pro-am and said he would see the rest of the course during his first round on Thursday. It was daring a signature event field to beat him, but instead, he shot a first-round 69, followed that up with a 65 on Friday and a 63 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into Sunday.

“I played some really good golf in the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to be done,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler shot a final round 68. He is not in the field for this week’s Zurich Classic in New Orleans. It’s not clear yet if he’ll play before the PGA Championship from May 16-19 as he and his wife Meredith await the birth of their first child.

2024 NFL Draft: Best players available in Day 3

Rob Rang

One need only look back to the Super Bowl to understand the importance of Day 3 of the NFL Draft .

While the Kansas City Chiefs were led by former first-round pick and NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, his brilliant play was enhanced by players like right guard Trey Smith, who has started all 50 games since being drafted 226th overall in 2021.

Meanwhile the San Francisco 49ers were led by quarterback Brock Purdy — the very last pick of the draft two years ago — and a five-time Pro Bowl tight end in George Kittle who was a fifth-round pick back in 2017.

The strengths of the 2024 NFL draft have been proven during the first three rounds, with a full quarter of the 100 picks made thus far being offensive linemen and another 16 being wide receivers.

After two rounds in which no quarterbacks were selected, it is easy to see why six of the first 12 picks of this draft were used on the position. The talent at signal-caller has not dried up yet, however, as two of the top-rated remaining prospects are South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler and Tulane’s Michael Pratt, who I anticipate being among the first players off the board Saturday.

The other positions that seem ripe for early runs in Round Four include linebacker and tight end. Here are the best players available, sorted by their overall rankings on our big board.

[ NFL Draft picks, grades and analysis: Bears land pair of A's for top-10 duo ]

42. Cade Stover , TE, Ohio State — 6-4, 247, Senior

A former linebacker and defensive end, Stover emerged as the top tight end in the Big Ten in 2023, showcasing impressive agility, physicality and soft hands.

50. Brandon Dorlus , DT, Oregon — 6-3, 283, Senior

If the Florida-born Dorlus had remained in SEC country, he'd probably be nationally viewed as a first-round pick. Instead, the three-time All-PAC-12 selection seems to still be under the radar as one of the nation's most instinctive, productive and versatile defensive linemen.

52. Javon Foster , OT, Missouri — 6-6, 313, Senior

Overlooked by many in an exceptional class of offensive tackles, this 41-game starter with experience on both sides ranks among my favorite Day 3 bargains.

51. Ja'Tavion Sanders , TE, Texas — 6-4, 245, Senior

Teams looking to duplicate the splashy totals enjoyed by rookie tight ends Sam LaPorta (Detroit), Dalton Kincaid (Buffalo) and Luke Musgrave (Green Bay) will be intrigued by Sanders' speed and soft hands.

53. Brenden Rice , WR, USC — 6-2, 208, Senior

The apple didn't fall from the tree with Rice, who plays with a similar blend of savvy route-running and strong, secure hands as his legendary father.

57. Mohamed Kamara , Edge, Colorado State — 6-1, 248, Senior

Criticize his level of competition all you'd like, but 45.5 tackles for loss, 29.5 sacks and five forced fumbles speak for themselves — especially when you take into account Kamara's compact frame and burst.

61. Khyree Jackson , CB, Oregon — 6-4, 194, Senior

An Alabama transfer who immediately took over as the leader of Oregon's secondary, the long-armed Jackson is among the most intriguing press corners of this class.

63. Troy Franklin , WR, Oregon — 6-3, 187, Junior

As his 17.1 yards-per-reception average in 2023 suggests, Franklin is a big play waiting to happen, showing rare elusiveness and acceleration for a receiver of his height.

64. Austin Booker , Edge, Kansas — 6-5, 240, Redshirt Sophomore

Booker rarely saw the field in two years at Minnesota but exploded at Kansas in 2023, earning the Big 12's Defensive Newcomer of the Year award. He's flexible, long and has an explosive burst to close — traits that project very well to the NFL.

68. Audric Estime ', RB, Notre Dame — 5-11, 221, Junior

A disappointing 40-yard dash time (4.71) shouldn't cloud scouts' vision with Estime', who shows good eyes, feet and physicality to be a bell-cow in the NFL.

69. T.J. Tampa , CB, Iowa State — 6-1, 189, Senior

With just three interceptions in 37 career games at Iowa State, Tampa lacks the ballhawking traits of some of his peers but his size, physicality and sticky coverage suggest he'll become a quality NFL starter.

70. Sedrick Van Pran-Granger , C, Georgia — 6-3, 310, Senior

Broad, powerful and surprisingly quick, the SEC's reigning Jacobs Blocking Trophy Award winner has the look of a plug-and-play starting center and potential Day 2 steal.

72. Jeremiah Trotter Jr ., LB, Clemson — 6-0, 228, Junior

Quite different in size and style to his father (a four-time Pro Bowler who played at around 260 pounds), the younger Trotter nevertheless flashes his father's instincts and tenacity.

79. Cedric Gray , LB, North Carolina — 6-2, 234, Senior

While perhaps not a true thumper, no linebacker in this class can match Gray's stellar production over the past three seasons, which include 365 tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 15 turnovers forced.

80. Jaylen Wright , RB, Tennessee — 5-11, 210, Junior

Despite playing fierce competition, Wright averaged an FBS-best 7.39 yards per carry in 2023 and followed it up with explosive numbers at the Combine, justifying a Day 2 selection.

83. Spencer Rattler , QB, South Carolina – 6-0, 211, Senior

Rattler is a former five-star recruit who certainly battled through some inconsistency but also showed resiliency and natural playmaking ability in stops at South Carolina and Oklahoma.

84. Devontez "Tez" Walker , WR, North Carolina — 6-2, 193, Senior

Among the better vertical threats in this draft, "Tez" will provide instant juice to any NFL offense — and at a fraction of the cost of many of this year's top-ranked wideouts.

87. Dadrion Taylor-Demerson , S, Texas Tech — 5-10, 197, Senior

One of this year's biggest Combine winners, DTD aced interviews and led all safeties in the 40-yard dash (4.41 seconds) after showing plus instincts and ball skills (10 career INTs) at Texas Tech.

90. Sataoa Laumea , OG, Utah — 6-4, 319, Senior

Teams looking for more of a sure thing than upside will value Laumea, a four-year starter with the size, athleticism and experience to play virtually anywhere on the offensive line.

98. Anthony Gould , WR/PR, Oregon State — 5-08, 174, Senior

Gould may lack ideal size, but not value, as a starting slot and returner is quite the bargain in the third round. Gould dazzled at the Combine and his 80-yard punt return touchdown in the East-West Shrine Bowl was the must-see play of this year's all-star games .

99. Jaden Hicks , S, Washington State — 6-2, 215, Redshirt Sophomore

Imposing, athletic and having shown the ability to make big plays behind the line of scrimmage (including 8.5 tackles for loss and a blocked kick), as well as in coverage (three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown), Hicks might have the highest upside of any safety in this class.

100. Michael Pratt , QB, Tulane — 6-3, 217, Senior

He may lack the elite traits of some of the higher-rated quarterbacks, but Pratt is a competitor whose savvy as a four-year starter and culture-setter at Tulane will be highly respected by NFL teams.

Clemson v South Carolina

Three rounds down, four rounds to go.

The second night of the 2024 NFL Draft started with a run on wide receivers and defensive tackles. After the San Francisco 49ers drafted Ricky Pearsall at No. 31 and the Carolina Panthers selected Xavier Legette to close out the first round Thursday night, the WR run continued to start proceedings on Friday. The Buffalo Bills selected Florida State WR Keon Coleman to start the second round, and the Los Angeles Chargers traded up with the New England Patriots to draft Ladd McConkey from Georgia.

After a pair of defensive tackles came off the board — Ruke Orhorhoro to the Atlanta Falcons and Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton to the Washington Commanders — it was back to the wide receiver position, as the Patriots added Ja’Lynn Polk from Washington.

That was how the night began. How did it end?

With some talented players still waiting to hear their names called.

Here are the best available players as Day Three of the 2024 NFL Draft begins. You will see their ranking in our SB Nation Top 100 on the left side.

2024 NFL Draft Best Available Players for Day 3

Near the top of this list? A pair of quarterbacks. After six quarterbacks went in the first round Thursday night — all of them coming off the board within the first 12 selections — the second night of the 2024 NFL Draft did not see a single passer selected.

Expect that to change fairly early on Saturday, with Spencer Rattler from South Carolina and Michael Pratt from Tulane likely early Day Three selections.

Charlie Woods’ road to Pinehurst begins Thursday.

Woods, the son of 82-time TOUR winner Tiger Woods, will compete in an 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The younger Woods is slated to tee off at 8:18 a.m. ET Thursday.

The road to the U.S. Open features 109 local qualifying sites across April and May, leading to 13 Final Qualifying sites in late May and early June. Final Qualifying is known as Golf's Longest Day, requiring competitors to navigate 36 holes to earn a tee time at the season’s third major championship.

To be eligible for qualifying, a player must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 0.4 or be a professional.

The elder Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion, but he has yet to win at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods finished T3 at Pinehurst in 1999, two strokes back of winner Payne Stewart, and he placed solo second at the venerable venue in 2005, two back of Michael Campbell. He didn’t compete at Pinehurst in 2014.

Earlier this spring, Charlie Woods competed in a pre-qualifier for the TOUR’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, his first foray at attempting to qualify for a TOUR-sanctioned event. The younger Woods shot 86 that day but will look to apply learnings in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifier.

Tiger and Charlie Woods have paired together in the last four PNC Championships, the two-player team event contested each December that utilizes a scramble format. Team Woods finished runner-up in 2021 but has yet to win the event.

Other notables in the field at Woods' site include Cameron Kuchar (son of Matt), Sunny Kim, Garrett Willis, Reed Greyserman (brother of Max), Austin Lemieux (son of Mario) and Michael Buttacavoli.
