PGA Tour Releases 2021-22 Tournament Schedule
- Author: Associated Press
Scottish Open added to schedule, two WGCs out
(AP) -- Gone are two World Golf Championships from the PGA Tour schedule. New to the schedule is the first PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament in Scotland that doesn’t involve a claret jug.
The PGA Tour released next season’s schedule on Tuesday that gives a glimpse of its strategic partnership with the European Tour, with players from both tours eligible for tournaments on each side of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Genesis Scottish Open, a week before the British Open , will have a field split between European Tour and PGA Tour members with points applying to both tours.
RELATED: The complete 2021-22 PGA Tour Schedule
Fifty members from the European Tour will have access to the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky and the Barracuda Championship in California. Those tournaments are held the same weeks as the Scottish Open and British Open.
Missing from the schedule is the WGC event in Mexico City. It was moved to Florida this year on a one-time basis because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now Mexico will host a regular tournament the last week in April at a site to be determined.
FedEx had sponsored a WGC in Memphis, Tennessee. The FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind is now the opening postseason event. Previously, the first postseason event was rotating between New Jersey and Boston.
“The PGA Tour and the European Tour are both stronger than at any time in our history as we are positioned to grow — together — over the next 10 years faster than we have at any point in our existence,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said.
As part of the tour’s alliance, the Irish Open will nearly double its purse to $6 million, and the PGA Tour pledged to work with Europe on commercial opportunities for the tournament.
As for the PGA Tour schedule, it starts in Napa, California, with the Fortinet Championship on Sept. 16-19. That’s two weeks after the Tour Championship, and a week before the Ryder Cup .
The CJ Cup in South Korea, which moved to Shadow Creek in the Las Vegas area last year because of the pandemic, returns to Las Vegas at The Summit Club. That precedes the Zozo Championship in Japan and the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.
The Zozo Championship was in California last year. While it indicates it will return to Japan, changes are possible depending on the pandemic situation in Tokyo. And there is no guarantee the HSBC Champions will be held.
The Phoenix Open and Pebble Beach are trading places. After the Farmers Insurance Open is staged in its traditional spot the last week in January, the tour goes to Pebble Beach, then Phoenix and finally Los Angeles for the Genesis Invitational.

11 winners and losers from the PGA Tour's new schedule

Orlando Ramirez
A picture of the 2024 PGA Tour schedule is starting to come together, even if some parts remain unclear. Sources told Golf Digest that the PGA Tour issued a memo to all sponsors Thursday stating early schedule reports are “inaccurate.” However, it is believed that the majority of the leaked schedule will mirror next week’s official release. Keeping that in mind, here are the winners and losers from the proposed new PGA Tour schedule:
Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Beginning in 2024 the Pebble Beach Pro-Am will be part of the tour’s Signature Series, or what the tour called its elevated/designated events this season. As an upshot, the amateur portion of the event will end after 36 holes, but that’s a small price to pay for a guarantee that the sport’s best will return to Carmel.
Top players
The gettin’ was already good for golf’s best performers, and it’s about to get better. The tour’s new signature series will codify that station, turning its designated events into another iteration of the former World Golf Championships with limited fields and (mostly) no-cut formats. And unlike this year, players will not be forced to play in the series or face PIP penalties for not participating.
Houston Open
Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, who helped save and revive the Houston Open following Shell Oil Company’s exodus as title sponsor, has not been quiet in public or behind the scenes is airing his belief the tournament should be returned to its historical spot in the spring. Crane went so far as to float the possibility of moving the tournament to LIV Golf should the tour not meet his demands. Crane got his wish, as the Houston Open is no longer part of the fall slate and now boasts a new tournament sponsor.
Bronze medallist C.T. Pan, gold medallist Xander Schauffele and silver medallist Rory Sabbatini stand on the podium at the medal ceremony of the men's competition during the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
KAZUHIRO NOGI
Jack and Tiger
Speaking at this year’s Masters, Tiger Woods was emphatic that he and Jack Nicklaus were against no-cut events, especially when it came to their own tournaments. “I certainly am pushing for my event to have a cut. I think that maybe the player-hosted events may have cuts. These are things that Jack and I are still in discussion with [PGA Tour commissioner] Jay [Monahan] and the board and the tour and the rest of the guys. That still is in flux.” The legends got their wish, as the Genesis Invitational (Woods), Memorial (Nicklaus) and the Arnold Palmer Invitational will be a part of the Signature Series but will also have cuts after 36 holes.
The Byron Nelson
Or should we say, “The CJ Cup honoring Byron Nelson.” Yes, that’s the event’s new real name. With the Pebble Pro-Am becoming a signature event, AT&T needed to divert its funds from its Dallas event, leaving the Nelson without a sponsor. There were rumblings if the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex needed two tour events (and in future seasons, three thanks to the PGA of America relocating its headquarters to Frisco and bringing the PGA Championship with it), but the CJ Group’s patronage will fuse the fall season’s CJ Cup (which had been conducted in South Korea, Las Vegas and South Carolina) with the Nelson.
Travelers Championship
It appears Travelers’ 2023 designation was not an outlier, as it was named a part of the tour’s Signature Series. It’s post-U.S. Open date may mean the Travelers will have less starpower than other series events, but no matter: The little tournament that could has gone from near extinction to one of the tour’s marquee competitions.

Palm Beach Classic
One of the reasons Honda left as title sponsor was the tournament’s date on the schedule kept many of the stars—some who lived just minutes from PGA National Resort—from competing. Sources with the tour tell Golf Digest that discussions remain ongoing with potential financial backers for the event, but given the Palm Beach tournament is sandwiched between designated events (Pebble Beach, Genesis Invitational on the front; API, Players Championship on the back) field issues will likely remain.
Big markets
There are more than a few big-time sponsors, sources tell Golf Digest, that remain perplexed that the tour doesn’t have annual stops in the country’s three biggest markets in New York City, Boston and Chicago. (Or Philadelphia, for that matter.) The new schedule does not address those complaints, as those metropolitan areas are again left off the tour schedule in 2024. To be fair, these cities were not expected to get events next season, but it is worth noting LIV Golf has tournaments in or around NYC, Boston and Chicago, and as the tour moves forward with a potential partnership with LIV’s owner, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, don’t be surprised of one or all of those cities finds their way back to the tour on a permanent basis.
Canadian Open
Got to feel for our friends up north. The 2020 and 2021 Canadian Opens were canceled due to pandemic restrictions, and the fields for the past two events—while boasting some stars like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau—were still short on depth, part of which stemmed from Canada’s vaccine requirements. Field strength will likely deteriorate if the leaked schedule holds true, because the 2024 Canadian Open is slated to be on the front of two designated events and the U.S. Open. Also complicating matters is RBC; according to Sports Business Journal, the company has only renewed its sponsorship for one year, waiting to see how the tour’s alliance with Saudi Arabia plays out. Should RBC depart, the tournament’s aforementioned field issues could hamper new sponsorship opportunities.
On one hand, the Olympics has a bit more breathing room than it did in 2021, when a WGC was scheduled the following week. And (knock on wood) the '24 Summer Games shouldn’t be plagued by a pandemic or Zika virus. Still, the golf schedule remains crowded, the Olympic format remains uninspired and the past two competitions failed to resonate with the general public, there’s a chance the sport’s stars pass on a trip to Paris.
Rocket Mortgage Classic, 3M Open and John Deere Classic
Stars are going to need a respite at some point, and if you’re looking for potential breaks, these three tournaments fit the bill. The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be on the back end of the Memorial-U.S. Open-Travelers stretch, and with more top players competing in the Scottish Open the week before the Open Championship it’s unlikely the John Deere will improve its field issues. As for the 3M Open, it’s had one of the worst strength of fields on tour the past few seasons, and keeping its spot behind the Open—with the Olympics the following week—won’t improve that standing.

2024 Zurich Classic live stream, TV schedule, where to watch online, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage
Grab a partner as this team-style event on the pga tour wraps up sunday.
For the seventh straight year, golfers are in the Bayou taking part in the PGA Tour's annual team-style event. The 2024 Zurich Classic welcomed 80 teams of two as partners hoping to grab a trophy by week's end at TPC Louisiana.
Headlining the action are the two players who seemingly do everything together: Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. The good friends were victorious in their first go around in 2022 but failed to defend their title a season ago. They started well this go-around but will need to make some major gains on Sunday if they hope to win two of three titles in New Orleans.
A new pairing making its debut features world No. 2 Rory McIlroy -- in his first tournament appearance -- playing alongside Shane Lowry. The duo, which has shared Ryder Cup success, is together near the top of the Zurich Classic leaderboard sitting just two strokes back entering the final 18 holes Sunday.
Follow Zurich Classic playoff coverage now that Round 4 has concluded.
Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala also entered as a strong duo on paper, as was the case with Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama. Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor hoped to do one better than their runner-up performance in 2023 with Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith also starring as an all-Canadian team. Brothers Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick team up for the second straight year with Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard, plus Parker and Pierceson Coody, also making this week a family affair.

8 thoughts halfway through the PGA Tour’s new fall schedule
Collin Morikawa is part of a strong crop of PGA Tour fall winners.
Getty Images
We’re four events into the PGA Tour’s new seven-event FedEx Cup Fall series of tournaments.
It’s a stark contrast to the last 10 PGA Tour seasons which featured a wrap-around season, which compelled more golfers to make starts during the fall so as not to fall behind in the FedEx Cup points race for the following year.
However, this PGA Tour season has technically included two fall seasons as it transitions back to a calendar year schedule. Instead of these events counting toward next year’s FedEx Cup standings, there’s a new points list for these events list that’s tacked on to everyone who finished outside the top 50 during the FedEx Cup season.
This week serves as somewhat of an intermission since two events were trimmed from the schedule, leaving this week, after the Zozo Championship in Japan and before Mexico’s World Wide Technology Championship, as a rare break in the PGA Tour grind.
Now that we’re just past halfway on the debut of the FedEx Cup Fall, here are 8 thoughts about the new section of the PGA Tour schedule.
8 thoughts on the FedEx Cup Fall
1. Strong crop of winners: While Sahith Theegala opened the first FedEx Cup Fall event with his maiden victory, each of the three other fall winners were either already or became multi-time PGA Tour winners. That said, Theegala is also one of the PGA Tour’s brightest young stars, making the Tour Championship and contending several times during a strong rookie season in 2022. Despite a slightly down FedEx Cup season in 2023, where he failed to advance out of the BMW Championship, he’ll now start 2024 with momentum from his first pro win.
Meanwhile, List, Kim and Morikawa all ended one-year-plus winless droughts, Kim and Morikawa both establishing themselves as two of the top players on the PGA Tour after up-and-down years in 2023.
Collin Morikawa’s emotional Zozo celebration revealed a secret struggle
2. Stars sit out: What do Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler all have in common? All have yet to make a start in the FedEx Cup Fall.
However, that was part of the point. Since no player who made it to the BMW Championship can improve their status for 2024 (they are already exempt into all eight signature events) they can skip fall events and not start from behind in January when the 2024 FedEx Cup season begins.
3. There’s movement in the “Next 10” : One of the incentives to play the fall for players who already have status secured for next season, but aren’t in the top 50, is entry into the first two of 2024’s Signature events, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis. Those players will be made up of Nos. 51-60 on the FedEx Cup Fall points list.
So far, three golfers have played their way into Pebble and L.A., Ben Griffin, J.J. Spaun and Luke List. Both Griffin and Spaun were just on the outside of the top 60 to begin the fall, 63rd and 62nd, respectively, while List was 119th after the Tour Championship and used his win to catapult himself to 59th.
Meanwhile, Brandon Wu, Davis Riley and Hayden Buckley are heading the wrong direction. After finishing the first FedEx Cup Playoff event in the top 60 in the standings, all three have now fallen outside.
‘That’s crazy’: Pro lays into PGA Tour Fall Series eligibility changes
4. Big names are still not in Signature events: As of now, Matt Kuchar, Keith Mitchell, Joel Dahmen, Adam Scott, Shane Lowry, Akshay Bhatia and Ludvig Aberg would all not qualify for the first Signature events. Justin Thomas is 72nd in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, leaving him on the outside looking in as well, however, he could still qualify for Signature events if he hangs onto his No. 25 Official World Golf Ranking. The top 30 in the OWGR qualify for Signature events.
5. 2024 Tour cards are being earned: Ludvig Aberg doesn’t need to finish in the top 125 of the standings to keep his card for next season, but he’s doing it anyway. Thanks to a T2 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Aberg, who was 135th after the end of the PGA Tour regular season, jumped all the way to 99th in the Fall Standings. By virtue of his top finish in the PGA Tour University rankings, Aberg is already exempt for 2024.
Four other players have moved into the top 125 in the last four events: Scott Stallings, Troy Meritt, Henrik Norlander and Erik van Rooyen. Stallings, like Aberg, also has secured PGA Tour status for 2024 thanks to making it to the Tour Championship in 2022.
6. 2024 Tour cards are being lost too: MJ Daffue, Patton Kizzire, Zecheng Dou, Jimmy Walker and Austin Smotherman have all played their way out of 2024 Tour status , although they still have three events to change that, as do others behind them. However, those players have combined to make just six of 15 cuts this fall.
Which notable PGA Tour players could lose their cards this fall? It’s complicated
With the change to a calendar year schedule, the fall has become a seven-event sprint to maintain PGA Tour cards , drawing out one of the more exciting PGA Tour storylines .
7. Tiger’s “other” PGA Tour debut: The PGA Tour has been watching Tiger Woods as a professional golfer for the better part of three decades now, but starting next week, Woods will have a new impact on the Tour.
With the World Wide Technology Championship changing venues this year, El Cardonal at Diamante will mark Woods’ first design to host a PGA Tour event. The resort on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula was also Woods’ first design to be completed.
8. The RSM will have more intrigue: Like every year (except 2020) since 2015, the RSM Classic at Sea Island in Georgia will again be the final official PGA Tour event of the calendar year. However, unlike years past, the stakes will be much higher. Like how the Wyndham Championship used to have added stress as pros had putts to make both the playoffs and keep their Tour cards, the latter part now moves to the RSM Classic.
If history holds, the chase of keeping PGA Tour cards will make the RSM a must-watch event in a way it has never been before.

Charlie Woods will play U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday

Charlie Woods’ road to Pinehurst begins Thursday.
Woods, the son of 82-time TOUR winner Tiger Woods, will compete in an 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The younger Woods is slated to tee off at 8:18 a.m. ET Thursday.
The road to the U.S. Open features 109 local qualifying sites across April and May, leading to 13 Final Qualifying sites in late May and early June. Final Qualifying is known as Golf's Longest Day, requiring competitors to navigate 36 holes to earn a tee time at the season’s third major championship.
To be eligible for qualifying, a player must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 0.4 or be a professional.
The elder Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion, but he has yet to win at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods finished T3 at Pinehurst in 1999, two strokes back of winner Payne Stewart, and he placed solo second at the venerable venue in 2005, two back of Michael Campbell. He didn’t compete at Pinehurst in 2014.
Earlier this spring, Charlie Woods competed in a pre-qualifier for the TOUR’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, his first foray at attempting to qualify for a TOUR-sanctioned event. The younger Woods shot 86 that day but will look to apply learnings in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifier.
Tiger and Charlie Woods have paired together in the last four PNC Championships, the two-player team event contested each December that utilizes a scramble format. Team Woods finished runner-up in 2021 but has yet to win the event.
Other notables in the field at Woods' site include Cameron Kuchar (son of Matt), Sunny Kim, Garrett Willis, Reed Greyserman (brother of Max), Austin Lemieux (son of Mario) and Michael Buttacavoli.
