Notable speleothems include thousands-of-years-old stalactites and columns. This family-owned facility also features above-ground attractions like a zipline course and gem-panning stations.

Hundreds of caverns dot the Texas Hill Country landscape. Guided tours and public entry are allowed in only a handful of these caves. Additional otherworldly caverns in the area include Cave Without a Name and Caverns of Sonora .

Snow in Texas

Snow is a rare commodity in the state. Parts of the state never witness a snowflake, making any flurries in Texas newsworthy. While tourists travel to Texas to escape winter precipitation, seeing snow in the Lone Star State is a special occasion.

One of the hottest spots for snow in Texas is Amarillo, in the northern panhandle. With an elevation of 3,600 feet , Amarillo receives snow from the westward Rocky Mountains at least once a year. San Antonio’s historic charm shines even brighter during December. The River Walk , we kid you not, transforms into something straight out of a holiday movie. There are millions of twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere that’ll warm your heart.

For a unique attraction, try to fit a visit to the Natural Bridge Caverns in December. These are open on weekends from December through February. They also offer “Christmas at the Caverns”.

You get caroling in the caverns, hot cocoa bar, stories with Mrs. Claus, and photos with the big guy in the red suit – Santa Claus. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience these unique natural wonders with a seasonal charm.

Make sure you make a stop at the iconic Alamo . It’s a real Texas must-see. Also, you need to treat yourself to some delicious Tex-Mex cuisine. Tacos, enchiladas, and queso, simply yum! You can’t pass on one of the best historic places to visit in December in Texas.

Where to Stay : Omni La Mansion del Rio

6. Port Aransas

A child walking on the beach at Port Aransas.

If you’ve been dreaming of a sunny December by the shore, Port Aransas is practically waving at you. Port Aransas is a laid-back coastal destination with very comfortable mild winter temperatures. If you’re into birdwatching, this place is a real treat.

And if collecting seashells is your thing, you’ll also have a great time. But the real stars of the Gulf of Mexico are the dolphins. You can actually spot these playful dolphins leaping and splashing in the water. Port Aransas is one of the best places in Texas to visit in December if you’re looking for a beach escape.

During our last trip to Port Aransas, we took our 5th wheel and camped right out on the beach . We have found a few places in Texas where you can camp right on the beach, and this area is one of our favorites. Camping on the beach is free but you do need to get a permit .

You are right in town, making it easy to enjoy the downtown attractions, tasty restaurants , and the beach.

Where to Stay : The Place Hotel

7. San Marcos

Lake area near San Marcos, one of the warmest places to visit in December in Texas.

San Marcos is one of the hidden gems of the Lone Star State. Trust us, it’s got all the ingredients for an unforgettable December getaway. San Marcos has this charming blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. If you’re looking for a romantic escape, you’ve hit the jackpot.

The pristine San Marcos River is a natural wonderland where you can spend your day tubing or paddleboarding. Nothing like a warm 72-degree water adventure in the middle of winter. And for nature enthusiasts like us, the nearby Texas Hill Country is amazing. Scenic hikes, breathtaking views, and the rugged beauty of the hills bring in the charm.

Downtown San Marcos is something straight out of a cozy romance movie. Unique shops, cozy cafes, and the kind of ambiance that makes you want to stroll hand in hand. It’s the perfect backdrop for a romantic date.

Where to Stay : Wingate by Wyndham San Marcos

8. Corpus Christi

Dolphin at the Texas State Aquarium

Another great beach destination is Corpus Christi. Here, you’ve got this perfect mix of sandy shores and cultural vibes. If you’ve always dreamed of a scenic beach drive, we recommend you head over to Ocean Drive. This is a very fun street with mansions and good views of the ocean.

The Texas State Aquarium is where you’ll go for some charming underwater wonders. Seriously though, during the winter, they bring out underwater Santa Claus and elves! This is, in our opinion, a hilarious way for children to meet Santa this year.

During our last visit to the Texas State Aquarium, our daughter volunteered to answer a question during the dolphin show and then got to take a special picture with the dolphins. It was a highlight of our trip for her. We love the aquarium in Corpus Christi.

Where to Stay : Aloft Corpus Christi

9. Fort Worth

A steer in Fort Worth, one of the best places to Visit in December in Texas.

Something very cool about Fort Worth is the old-timey feel you get from this place. It is a great place to get a taste of the Old West, and we know you will love that Southern hospitality, especially during the holidays.

At the Fort Worth Stockyards , you’ll feel like you’ve gone back to the days of cowboys and cattle drives. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of watching a real-life cattle stampede. Plus, you can get a taste of some seriously delicious Texas barbecue while you’re here.

In December, you get the full southern winter experience with hot cocoa, ice skating, and pictures with Santa.

But if you’re more of a green-thumb enthusiast, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is your peaceful paradise. Not only can you take a stroll through lush gardens, but they deck out for the holidays, too.

You can go through their beautiful Lightscape exhibit and take in the tunnels and strands of light. There is nothing more magical than being surrounded by colorful blooms and fragrant blossoms, along with some twinkling lights.

Where to Stay : Hyatt Place Fort Worth/Historic Stockyards

10. Amarillo

Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is one of the most interesting places to visit in December in Texas.

If you’re up for an offbeat adventure in the Texas Panhandle this December, Amarillo is your quirky bet. For example, the iconic Cadillac Ranch – a row of vintage Cadillacs sticking out of the ground like a piece of pop culture art.

Something kind of cool about this place is that you can leave your mark, literally. You can bring your own spray paint and leave your mark on these colorful classics. It’s a bit wild and a whole lot of fun.

If you happen to forget your own spray paint, there is a small booth there where you can buy some. We ended up buying our spray paint from there, and that worked out great for us. It is a bit more expensive but very convenient.

You’ll also want to enjoy the food in this town. The Big Texan Steak Ranch is the epitome of a good Texan steak. Pair this with some mashed potatoes (a personal favorite) and maybe some tasty fried okra, and you’ve got yourself a Texan dinner.

And if you’re there for Christmas, you will not regret dining at their special holiday buffet. Talk about being full on Christmas.

Where to Stay : Atrea Inn Amarillo

11. El Paso

Entrance to Billy Bob's Texas

It’s not a surprise that being a bordering city to Mexico, El Paso offers a unique blend of Texan and Mexican cultures. And if you have never experienced a Mexican “Navidad,” you’re in for a treat!

First, the food is amazing, if you can, try some pozole and tamales. Don’t forget to check out the Merry-achi Christmas (Dec 23 “Nochebuena”). This is a festive night of Mariachi music at the Plaza Theatre.

There are also some other really nice things happening here during the holidays in December, including horse-drawn carriage rides through the enchanting streets of El Paso. Or if you’re into the classic theater, Les Misérables is showing at the popular Plaza Theatre mid-month.

But if you’re up for some outdoor adventure, the Franklin Mountains are calling your name. Hiking, exploring, and taking in breathtaking views this is where you will want to be. El Paso is a festive town you will want to experience during this season.

Where to Stay : SpringHill Suites by Marriott El Paso Airport

12. fredericksburg.

A street with storefronts in Fredericksburg, one of the best places to Visit in December in Texas.

If you’re up for a charming getaway with a German twist right in the heart of Texas, Fredericksburg is calling your name. Fredericksburg is a quaint town that’ll steal your heart. My husband and I went on a trip to San Antonio and Fredericksburg, and we loved it!

If we are talking about one of its special charms, it is the wineries. Fredericksburg is known for its vino, and December is the perfect time to indulge. Wine tastings are the best way to cozy up this season. You’ll be sipping on local wines that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance.

And while you’re here, don’t forget to explore the picturesque Main Street. It’s like something out of a holiday movie – charming shops, festive decorations, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for a romantic stroll.

Where to Stay : There are so many wonderful places to stay in Fredericksburg , but Fredericksburg Inn & Suites tops our list!

13. Austin

Austin city emblem on concrete. Austin is one of the most family friendly places to visit in December in Texas.

Austin is a vibrant city full of fun escapades for the adventurous couple. The music scene in Austin is downright legendary. You get live bands, talented artists, and genres to suit every taste. You can’t visit without catching some live music.

During the holidays, the Trail of Lights at Zilker Park is something straight out of a holiday fairy tale. Imagine a park decked out in dazzling displays, colorful lights, and a magical atmosphere that’ll leave you feeling like a kid again. It’s like a winter wonderland in the heart of Texas.

If you’re in the mood for romance, Austin has you covered, too. There are plenty of romantic spots along the river. Lady Bird Lake is especially charming and perfect for a leisurely walk – hand in hand. This is one of our top choices for the best places to visit in December near Texas.

Where to Stay : The Carpenter Hotel

14. South Padre Island

Beach at South Padre Island.

If you prefer a romantic beach getaway, South Padre Island is your hidden gem. The best part is that it’s a little less crowded in December, so you get all that beachy goodness with a side of tranquility.

If you want to feel the romance in a Texan coastal way, make sure to take a horseback ride along the beach. Imagine yourself on the back of a majestic horse, riding along the sandy shores with your better half. If that doesn’t scream romance, then we don’t know what does.

Another idea is visiting the unique attraction of the Holiday Sandcastle Village. This is a unique display of amazing sand sculptures located right under the Ferris Wheel in the SPI Entertainment District. What’s more romantic than a stroll at the beach, followed by a unique art display and ending in a Ferris Wheel ride? It’s straight out of a teenage rom-com, and we are here for it!

Where to Stay : Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island

River and tree-lined bank near Gruene, Texas, one of the best places to visit in December in Texas.

Gruene is another small town nestled in the Texas Hill Country. This place is charming, has history, and the people are the definition of old-fashioned Texan hospitality. This picturesque town with charming bed and breakfasts and a cozy atmosphere is where you will want to cuddle.

If you want some of that charming history this town has to offer, you need to head over to The Gruene Hall . This is not just any music venue; it’s a living legend. This is the oldest dance hall in Texas, built back in 1878. You can enjoy an evening of live music and dance floors with your partner.

The Gruene Historic District is the perfect place to stroll about and peruse those charming original buildings, boutique shops, and delicious restaurants. And to finish off the day, you can cuddle up at the iconic drive-in movie theater under the Texas stars. Gruene is the perfect setting for some sweet, old-fashioned love.

10 of the Best Winter Vacations in Texas

Every summer you'll hear a lot of Texans complaining about the heat, but the flip side of that coin is that Winters here tend to be pretty mild. While we don't often get many white Christmases in the Lone Star State , sometimes we get some sun-shiny ones. Here in Texas, you can take vacations in the winter that might be unbearable during the hotter months of the year. So whether you're looking for an exciting tourist spot or a serene, remote getaway, we've got you covered.

1. South Padre Island

winter vacations in texas

Flickr/Vince Smith

South Padre Island is the undisputed beach destination preferred by most Texans. You don't have to wait until Summer to go there though. South Padre is just as beautiful in the Winter as in the Summer, and it's less expensive and not as full of tourists. Whereas you might not want to jump into the gulf, it's still pleasant enough for a stroll along the beach, or to take a picnic or a boat ride.

2. Davis Mountains State Park

winter vacations in texas

Image via Yelp

The Davis Mountains are a particularly special area of Texas. Because of its desert climate, West Texas gets both hot and cold extremes. Though its status as a desert means there is little precipitation, there are occasional snowstorms in the Davis mountains that blanket the beautiful Southwestern landscape in frosty white. You can stay in the historic Indian Lodge, birdwatch, stargaze and hike all without getting heat exhaustion like you might during Summer.

3. Big Bend National Park

winter vacations in texas

Source: Big Bend National Park Facebook

Located in the big bend of the Rio Grande River, Big Bend National Park is a must-see destination in Texas during Winter . Daytime temperatures hover in the 70s, which makes strenuous hikes unusually pleasant. Temperature can drop near freezing at night though, which makes it the perfect time to light a fire at your campsite and snuggle up.

4. San Antonio Riverwalk

winter vacations in texas

Most folks probably think about visiting San Antonio during the Summer months, but the Riverwalk is also a great place to go during the Winter. Every year the trees lining the San Antonio River are wound with millions of glittering and colorful Christmas lights which reflect off the water creating a winter wonderland. Also, hotels on the Riverwalk drop in price during the offseason, so it's easier on your bank account.

5. Galveston

winter vacations in texas

Flickr/Allen Sheffield

Each December the historic streets of Galveston are transformed into a Victorian world as Dickens on the Strand descends upon the Gulf city. A visit to Galveston during the winter, even if you miss Dickens on the Strand is still like traveling back in time. Galveston is full of historical quirks and attractions like the Opera House and the Moody Mansion that are fantastic places to visit in the cold months.

Far West Texas is a study in contrasts. Both hot and cold, both desolate and beautiful, both remote and heavily traveled. The tiny town of Marfa has received a lot of recognition lately for its art installations as well as its mysterious Marfa lights. Visiting Marfa in the Winter means you get the intrigue of West Texas without the intense heat, and you can still do, well, pretty much everything you do there in the Summer.

7. Falcon State Park

winter vacations in texas

If you enjoy bass fishing then you've got to head down south to the Falcon Reservoir (also known as Falcon Lake). The reservoir is on the Rio Grande, and it offers amazing fishing during the Winter. You're likely to catch enormous largemouth bass, but you could also nab alligator gar, catfish or crappie. Winter is a great time to go down here because it won't be as hot as other times of the year, but it certainly won't be as cold as it is on Lake Fork near Dallas. Also, the fishing doesn't suffer for the change in weather.

8. Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site

winter vacations in texas

Seminole Canyon in South Texas near Comstock is a beautiful place to visit during the Winter months. The hike out to view the ancient pictographs in the park is much more enjoyable when the weather is cool, and you can stand to stay out there longer as well.

9. Padre Island National Seashore

winter vacations in texas

Probably the most unspoiled beach in the state of Texas, the Padre Island National Seashore on North Padre Island is 70 miles of undeveloped barrier island where you can see exotic seabirds, sea turtles and all manner of ocean life. Though parts of the seashore were damaged in Hurricane Harvey, the park remains open at 15 sites. Though Winter can be windy, there are certain sights you can only see in the winter, like the rare release of cold-stunned sea turtles that the NPS rescues throughout the season.

10. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

winter vacations in texas

Facebook/Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Just down the road from South Padre, you'll find the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. At Laguna Atascosa, you can enjoy hunting, fishing and bird watching during Winter without getting heat stroke. You might even spot an endangered ocelot while you're there! You could also head over to Boca Chica Beach to see the same gorgeous blue waters of South Padre without all the crowds or souvenir shops.

14 Gorgeous Texas Beaches To Visit During Winter

  • Winter Travel

Texas has 367 miles of coastline. It offers miles of remote, shell-studded beaches, mangrove marshes, mountainous dunes, and tidal salt flats. You’ll find beaches with hundreds of beach house vacation rentals, water sports activities, and deep-sea fishing charters. And winter is the best time to explore Texas beaches, when the crowds are sparse and the weather is moderate, in the low 70s.

I’ve explored beaches from the tip of Texas at Boca Chica to Corpus Christi, Galveston, and up the twisted oaks and salt domes of High Island toward Louisiana. Here are my favorite Texas beaches to visit during winter — listed geographically, south to north.

Starbase at Boca Chica Beach.

1. Boca Chica Beach

At the very tip of South Texas, Boca Chica Beach lies about 23 miles east of Brownsville, where Highway 4 dead-ends at the Gulf of Mexico. Mangrove marshes, clay dunes, and tidal salt flats surround the eight-mile beach at Boca Chica, a national wildlife refuge. Rustic and remote, the area is perfect for bird watching, fishing, swimming, and surfing. The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle comes ashore to nest in spring and summer.

These days, you might hear a rumble or two from Elon Musk’s SpaceX South Texas Launch site at Boca Chica, called Starbase . NASA selected Musk’s Starship to be the lunar lander in the future Artemis Program; Musk’s future goal is Martian exploration.

Best 15 Winter Trip Ideas In Texas (2024)

15 Winter Trip Ideas In Texas

It’s time to start thinking about winter travel trip ideas in Texas for 2024!

If you’re still in the holiday spirit and looking to make this winter season more exciting, check out these 15 winter trip ideas in Texas.

As the holiday season winds down, everyone has returned to work, and the New Year has begun – it’s time to plan a winter getaway. Thanks to Texas’s mild winters, locals and out-of-towners can enjoy many outdoor activities and attractions in the winter months in Texas.

Daytime temperatures in Texas in the winter months can differ daily. So, always bring a coat with you, and layer your clothing. Peruse these winter trips to take in Texas – they may even be on your Texas winter bucket list.

Just so you know, Texas winters can get downright cold in the winter, and you may even see snow. You’ll need a coat somewhere in the state in the months of December, January, and February – and sometimes in March. Bundling up may be needed depending on where you visit, especially in the Panhandle.

15 Winter Trip Ideas In Texas

The winter climate in Texas is comfortable to many, but it does get down to freezing on some days. When it does, it rarely stays that way. The further you travel south, the warmer it can get. Don’t let anything destroy your winter adventures, though. From North Texas, East Texas, the West, and the South, and let’s not forget Central Texas, the Lone Star State has plenty of places to visit in winter that will suit everyone.

Here are fun winter activities to enjoy in Texas, and you may even want to schedule a winter vacation to continue the holiday cheer!

1. Follow The Texas Antique Trail

(must like antiques!)

Choose a region in Texas and follow the trail to unique antique shops. See all seven regions on the  Texas Antique Trail  to get an idea of the area you want to visit. Also, if you’re heading out before Christmas, several  Top Antique Shows in Texas  are going on in November and December.

And if you choose the region east of Dallas-Fort Worth – you might want to visit the world’s largest flea market – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX.

2. Rent An RV And Head To The Hill Country

Traveling in an RV gives you more freedom to see the world, bring the things you want, and do something different. It also allows you to enjoy nature and travel to several different places. I suggest heading to the Texas Hill Country on a scenic drive on Hwy 281 and making Marble Falls your first stop, where you’ll find at least five RV Parks for overnights. Many lakes surround Marble Falls (take your pick), there are a few golf courses, and it has a lovely walkable downtown with a winery.

Hanging out by the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is also a great winter idea. The river is constantly flowing, and everything is open all around it. Gruene Hall is probably playing country music – you never know who will show up there or who will be singing.

3. Backpack In Big Bend National Park

If you long to explore the great outdoors, consider a backpacking trip. Pack your bag with the winter essentials and embark on an unforgettable adventure through Big Bend National Park. Don’t forget to snap photos of breathtaking views and watch for wildlife. It said that the Big Bend area is a hidden gem and that, though it’s on practically every list I have on this site, it’s not visited enough.

Backpacking in national parks is also a great way to see the world for what it is. Plus, winter months are typically cheaper than summer rates. If there is a time during your visit, spend the day at the natural hot springs nearby.

4. Winter Camping In The Texas Panhandle

What about winter camping? Have you ever tried combining the two? Winter camping is another extreme yet satisfying outdoor adventure. Plus, winter turns the great outdoors into a new world, making the experience unlike any other. Nature lovers enjoy spending time at Palo Duro Canyon zip lining across the canyon. I did this once but in the summer. It was my first zip line experience, and I was hooked on the outdoor activity.

5. Plan A Girls’ Trip To Dallas

When you can take a trip with some of the best women in your life, that experience becomes even better. A girls’ trip is a great way to reconnect and make more memories. The Dallas area is spread out, so find a great place to start. Deep Ellum is the best place to party, or if you all like art, the Dallas Museum of Art downtown would be excellent. And, while you’re in the area, stop by the Dallas Farmers Market. It’s one of the best outdoor markets I’ve been to in North Texas.

6. Visit Houston On A Houston CityPASS

A CityPASS is a simple vacation method in popular destinations like Houston and Dallas. CityPASS tickets contain admission to the most famous and popular attractions in each city and are priced up to 50% less than the combined regular price of admissions. The Johnson Space Center and the Space Center Houston are included in the Houston CityPass.

7. Stroll Downtown Austin

The best winter vacations are always in the south because the winter weather is better. Austin, the live music capital of the world, would be a great option. There’s always something going on there – live music and special events. Grab a hot cocoa and enjoy your time while walking around. It’s also a great time to take your kids to the Texas State Capitol.

Zilker Park and the Zilker Botanical Garden are wonderful places to visit in Austin.

8. Take A Day Trip To A State Park

All you need is a day at one of our Texas State Parks to fall in love with Texas (again). I hear Colorado Bend State Park and McKinney Falls State Park are gorgeous. One day soon, I’ll make it to Colorado Bend State Park – it’s on my winter bucket list.

UPDATE:  I made it …BUT we didn’t have reservations, and the park was full! Learned a lesson the hard way. Make reservations online for any Texas State Park. Another update – I went a second time and got in, but silly me didn’t have enough time to see it all.

9. Plan a Girl’s Getaway To San Antonio

Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees. Once in February, my son and I went to San Antonio for an event, and the weather was so nice and warm that the swimming pool at the hotel was open. Not knowing and not even thinking he could swim in February, I did not pack his swimsuit – so I made a mad dash to Target for one.

The San Antonio River Walk restaurants are booming in the winter, and the guided boat tours are operating. The Natural Bridge Caverns is always open, and The Spanish Missions would be a great Texas History lesson to learn more about. One of our writers took a  girl’s getaway to San Antonio  with two of her besties, where they visited some luxurious places.

10.  Explore West Texas

Trip ideas in Texas have to include West Texas. Do you have a subscription to the Texas Highways magazine? I do, and in each magazine I received in 2022, there was an ad/article about taking a West Texas Road Trip.

Towns included are Fort Stockton, Midland, Odessa, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Marfa. It briefly discusses each town and what’s happening during publication.  Texas Highways  is my favorite Texas travel magazine, and I have many trip ideas in Texas, too.

This is a trip I would like to take in the winter so that I can write an exclusive article about it. What do you think? Would you consider this road trip in your winter travels or any time of year?

11. Trek Down To South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a popular, well-known Texan Gulf Coast destination for Texans. It’s a tropical island paradise and the perfect place to escape cold temperatures. See what you can do on  South Padre Island  in the winter, and be sure to include Padre Island National Seashore in your travels.

12. Wine Lover’s Celebration Wine Tour

February – texas hill country.

The  Texas Hill Country Wine Trail  hosts four self-guided wine tours yearly in the hill country, the first being in February. Small towns of the hill country will participate in the first Texas wine tour of the year. Don’t let the name fool you. I went with a girlfriend (not a lover) last year, and we had a blast. Well, before the ice storm came through. That’s not a usual thing to happen in that area, either.

Double your fun and visit a few wineries (that are participating) in Dripping Springs, so you can also visit Hamilton Pool Preserve. Then you can also eat at Salt Lick BBQ – an awesome place to hear live music and enjoy the good barbecue they are known for.

13. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

I haven’t been to the Texas Gulf Coast in the winter months, but we did go in October one year. And would you know, it was warm enough for my son to play in the water? And so he did – clothes in all!

Not only is  Galveston Pleasure Pier  open year-round, but it’s also open on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. You may want to know  where to eat in Galveston  because there are so many places on the Island that it can get overwhelming.

14. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Make it a week-long road trip and trek further to the  Guadalupe Mountains National Park . Located 110 miles east of El Paso and 56 miles southwest of Carlsbad, you could even visit Carlsbad Caverns. This is a trip of a lifetime.

15. Visit El Paso

Go for a scenic drive and explore Franklin Mountains State Park – the most western point of Texas. Smell the roses in the Municipal Rose Garden. These are just a few things to do. Going to El Paso would make a wonderful Texas winter vacation. You can always go to New Mexico and visit Carlsbad Caverns.

And here is one to grow on …

16. The Fifth Annual Epic Waters’ Epic Plunge

Saturday, January 2024, at  Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark in Grand Prairie .

This wintry event allows everyone to take a chilly plunge into Epic Waves, the waterpark’s 10,000-square-foot outdoor wave pool! Take the “Polar Plunge” (if you dare) into anticipated water temperatures in the 50s. Afterward, thaw off with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate while enjoying all the family fun inside the waterpark at a perfect 85 degrees.

Tickets:  $49 per person, and family 4-pack $149

All participants receive an “I Conquered the Epic Plunge” long-sleeved t-shirt, hot chocolate after they take the plunge, full-day admission of Splash-tastic indoor family fun, as well as a “bonus” admission ticket to return to enjoy everything Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark has to offer before December 31, 2023. WOW! Are you brave? I am not!!

If you’ve enjoyed these winter trip ideas in Texas, please share this article with your friends. Remember, travel costs may be down during this time, which means more money in your pocket.

December Festivals and Events

Texas temperatures dip during the final month of the year with temperatures averaging in the 50s in Dallas. The temperatures are still mild enough to be pleasant, particularly for those in attendance at one of the many festivals and events staged throughout Texas.

Consider a festival celebrating the Victorian-era in Galveston. Revel in the Mariachi experience in San Antonio. Taste wines in Texas Hill Country. Plan what to check out when vacationing in the Lone Star State in December.

Dickens on the Strand

For more than three decades, characters from Charles Dickens' novels have strolled Galveston's historic Strand District during December. Known as Dickens on the Strand, this holiday festival takes visitors back to the Victorian era as street vendors with pushcarts work amongst carolers and street musicians, while children busy themselves at the Royal Menagerie Petting Zoo. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. The holiday season in Germany's fourth largest city can only be described as magical. Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.
