The Proclaimers 2022 UK Tour

2022 will see The Proclaimers heading into the recording studio to record their 12th studio album, followed by festival appearances in the summer and a 35-date UK & Ireland tour from October to December.

The 2022 headline tour includes a visit to York Barbican on 19 October 2022.

Strikingly individual, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid emerged 35 years ago with their debut album This Is The Story and Top 3 single Letter from America. Since then, their enduring appeal across generations has had over the years seen them enjoy huge success across the globe.

The Proclaimers songs are timeless, capturing a gamut of human emotions, written with poignancy, emotional honesty, political fire, and wit. Their songs feature at weddings, funerals and everything in-between and there is one song, an early celebration of falling head over heels in love that is known the world over and has become a staggering global anthem.

The Proclaimers have carved out a niche for themselves in the netherworld where pop, folk, new wave, and punk collide. In the process, they have enjoyed Gold and Platinum singles and albums in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

On BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island discs, David Tennant describes his first track by The Proclaimers - "I could have chosen any and every track from this band, probably my favourite band of all time. They write the most spectacular songs, big-hearted, uncynical passionate songs."

The Proclaimers are a Scottish folk rock group fronted by identical twins Charlie and Craig Reid. Their sound captures the rustic roots rock aspect of artists like Bob Dylan, but lends equal credit to the shimmering pop and wry lyricism of acts like Orange Juice and Harry Nilsson.

The two brothers were born in Leith, Scotland and spent their childhood amongst the cities: Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Auchtermuchty. During their time in Auchtermuchty they were enrolled in Bell Baxter High School and became involved in several punk bands. The Reid brothers eventually broke out on their own and formed the Proclaimers in 1983. While this project strayed from the harder forms of punk it still incorporated many of the genres ethos and stylistic attributes; however, folk/pop seemed to be at the heart of their sound.

The Proclaimers did not release an album until several years after their formation, rather they spent a large potion of their initial stages touring. The group did release a couple demos in this early period, one of which found it’s way to the brit-pop group the Housemartins. This act showed much enthusiasm towards the demo and invited the Proclaimers to open for them on their 1986 tour.

Things seemed to fall in place for the band after this experience. In January 1987 they were featured on the TV series “The Tube” and later that year their 2nd single “Letter from America” took No .3 on the UK Singles Chart. This single appeared on their debut studio album “This Is the Story”, which was released on 29 June 1987 through Chrysalis and has since been certified gold.

Their sophomore album “Sunshine on Leith” came out a year later and boasted three hits, which included their self-titled track “Sunshine on Leith”, “I’m on My Way”, and perhaps the biggest song of their career “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. The latter of the singles brought them widespread international fame, topping the charts in both Australia and New Zealand and breaching the top 20 in Ireland and the UK.

This single experienced a resurgence in 1993 as it appeared on the Benny & Joon soundtrack and resultantly shot to No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This track was also extensively featured in an episode of the popular US sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” and was later re-recorded in 2007 for the Comic Relief charity. This newly revised version hit No.1 on the UK charts and also was accompanied by a successful music video chalked full of celebrities. The Proclaimers re-issued “Sunshine of Leith” in 2001 and included their popular cover of Roger Miller’s “King of The Road”, which was previously used in the Russell Crowe film “The Crossing”.

The brothers next album “Hit the Highway” did not come out until seven years later and was their only album to be released in the 90s. This album proved to be a success peaking at No. 8 on the UK Album Charts and eventually going silver. Despite this being the band’s only release of the 90s they managed to keep a strong presence in the media, having several of their songs featured in highly regarded cult films such as “Benny & Joon”, “Dumb and Dumber”, “Bye Bye Love”, “Bottle Rocket”, and “Slab Boys”.

2001 is considered somewhat of a comeback year for the Proclaimers. During this time they released their long awaited 4th studio album “Persevere” and additionally their song “I’m On My Way” was featured in the blockbuster Dreamworks’ production, “Shrek”. After their release of “Persevere” the Reids continued to steadily output material.

Their album “Born Innocent” came out on 18 November 2003 and was produced by former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins. “Restless Soul” followed in 2005 and was in turn proceeded by 2007s “Life with You”, which placed at No. 13 on the charts and struck silver status. Their 8th studio album “Notes & Rhymes” was issued in 2009 and it’s follow up “Like Comedy” came out in 2012.

The Proclaimers keen sense of pop hooks, direct and often humorous lyrics have earned them a devoted fan base and a following by artists like Jens Lekman, Sondre Lerche, Camera Obscura, and Belle and Sebastain.

Live reviews

A concert put on by The Proclaimers can always be expected to be inspirational and highly engaging. The band consists of twin brothers, Charlie and Craig Reid, who were raised in Scotland and they are not afraid to let their nationality steep through their music.

The Proclaimers have strong Scottish accents while singing their songs, which enhances their unique style of celtic, punk-folk music. Being twin brothers both Charlie and Craig are able to perfectly harmonize their vocals during choruses of their songs to deepen the ornate sounds of their performance. The band strongly incorporates acoustic guitars into their compositions and play catchy chord progressions that are reminiscent of 1950’s rock and roll ballads. The brothers often sing in doo-whop vocal styles, which enhance the strong pop sounds in their performance. Although the two brothers are the main members of the band, they often tour with a backing band consisting of a bass player, a drummer, a electric guitarist, and a keyboard player. The keyboardist often incorporates lush sounds of synthesizers as well as often incorporates some groovy tones on the organ. The guitarist often breaks into some jiving guitar riffs and solos during the songs.

The Proclaimers are known for their rock anthems that make the audience want to stand up and belt out the lyrics with great passion. Such songs as “Then I Met You” and “I’m Gonna be (500 Miles)” are some of the most popular hits that the Proclaimers often play live that get audiences excited. In fact “I’m Gonna be (500 Miles)” has regained its popularity after reoccurring in the television sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. The band has often incorporated some Bob Dylan-esque harmonica playing into their songs that blends in quite well with their sound. The Proclaimers deliver much passion and inspiration into their performance belting out their catchy vocal harmonies in their strong Scottish accents that are likely to instill a great sense of vigor in the audience. Seeing them live creates for a highly fun time of great music.

You’ll likely remember that The Proclaimers were re-popularised a few years back, largely due to the association of their signature song ‘(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles’ with something I love - the Scottish national football team, where the song was played over the PA at Hampden after victories - and something I definitely don’t in the form of the comedy of Peter Kay, who recorded a new video for the track for Comic Relief, and succeeded in taking it to the top of the charts in the process, back in 2007. In fact, though, there’s plenty more to the pair - twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid - than just that one track, with nine albums released over the course of their career and a slew of other well-loved songs to their name, like ‘Sunshine on Leith’. They continue to tour regularly, too, with their most recent trip around the UK a mammoth effort that took them to thirty-five different towns and cities; they wrapped things up on New Year’s Eve, with a spectacular show at Stirling Castle. Last year, they played their first arena show for a while, at Glasgow’s new Hydro; with Glasvegas chosen as the rather incongruous support act, they ran through a career-spanning twenty-four song set that had fans quite literally dancing in the aisles.

The Proclaimers at the Commodore ballroom in Vancouver B.C. Canada on October 11, 2016

First of all, the opening act was a solo performer by the name of Jenny O, from New York apparently. She was crap to put it bluntly. I know the opening act is always a tough gig, people talking and generally not interested but she had a voice that was painful to listen to and her songs were generic. Mercifully (for the audience) she was only out there for 22 minutes. (yes, I was timing it). Not sure if that is how long she was scheduled to be out there or if she cut it short, but anyway, there you have it.

The Proclaimers were their usual energetic self with a great backing band.Played all their hits and a sampling from their new(ish) album. Only an hour and a half including encore, would've liked to see them play a bit longer but 1 1/2 hours seems to be about standard these days. Thumbs up.

It was a great performance, with a good choice of songs. A couple more slower pieces would have been good, too. Charlie and Craig are very musical, as are members of the band. I was standing in front of one of the amps, so I found it hard at times to make out the lyrics, but I recognized most of the songs anyway.

I first heard them six weeks ago, when their "I'm gonna be (500 miles)" was played on the sound system of our tour bus on the way to the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I looked them up on Youtube and listened to as many tracks as I could find. Then I searched them on line and found they were playing only 2 1/2 hours drive away (Pittsburgh to Cleveland), so my wife and I made the trip and stayed overnight at an Airbnb place just a block away. Entirely enjoyable experience.

The Proclaimers live are exactly what you would expect. And they do not disappoint in any way. Their vast catalogue of uplifting, heart-warming, reflective and sometimes sad songs are a total joy - and performed with great energy and gusto from a truly professional band. How many years have they been playing such mega-hits as 500 miles ? you might think that they would get bored of playing them..... well it was so fresh, that you would think they wrote it yesterday ! Bloody brilliant performance - highly recommend the brothers from Leith. Go catch them if you can - guaranteed that you will have a smile on your face for the entire evening.

We thought the show was quite good. The guys sang brilliantly. Only problem we found was it all seemed a bit rushed. They had to be finished by 10pm & we’re unsure if this was a venue thing or if they needed to catch a plane or something. With the result there was no crowd interaction, except from them saying hello. If we had interaction I think it would have brought it to another level. We decided to support one of our countries bands as we feel it’s important & we didn’t feel the love back from the guys. A bit disappointed.

You get what it says on the tin. They are just fantastic and so professional. We were in the front row at the royal concert hall and we're so close to everything. Lived it and loved the enthusiasm that the twins still show. Even if you have seen them many times before they are still one of the best live bands ever. Good musicians and great backing band. Would go and see them again in a heartbeat.

Fabulous show, did all our favourites plus the new ones. They still sound great. It's so nice to hear a british band - diction clear and audible. Such a change from the multitude of American bands.

Warm up act: Jack Lukeman has a lovely voice and is a versatile performer. Hope to see him around more

Brilliant show, the audience was dancing in the auditorium which is pretty unusual for the all seated Sydney Opera House. All the familiar tunes but lots of new ones too and the best rendition of Sunshine on Leith ever. It was a great gig, I would go again tomorrow!

Olivia Rodrigo in Dublin review: Watch out Taylor Swift. This bona fide pop superstar is coming for you

Kicking off the European leg of her Guts tour at Dublin’s 3Arena on Tuesday night, Olivia Rodrigo left no doubt that she’s a bona fide pop superstar.

Hordes of teenage girls in glittering miniskirts shriek in excitement as the 21-year-old appears on stage in her own silver number, paired with matching crop top, sparkling eyeshadow and black Doc Martens.

Launching straight into Bad Idea Right?, the punchy, guitar-heavy second single from her sophomore effort Guts, it’s clear that Rodrigo is not just a teen icon; she’s a global phenomenon.

As with many Gen-Zers, the former Disney star is influenced by the music and fashion of the late 1990s and early 2000s – including the pop-rock stylings of the likes of No Doubt, Hole and Alanis Morissette.

But it’s not just her image that connects with the nostalgic new generation; it’s also the sheer force of her songwriting which dissects growing pains and young adulthood with disarming honesty and wry wit.

Debut single Drivers License, released in early 2021, effectively distils the torture of first heartbreak and met the zeitgeist one year into an isolating global pandemic.

Tonight it’s as poignant as ever, as Rodrigo delivers it from behind a piano early on in the set.

[  Olivia Rodrigo: Guts – One of the best and most observant pop songwriters out there  ]

She sings its heart-wrenching bridge with feeling, and so too do the young audience as they hold their phones like lighters.

Teenage girls punch their fists in the air during Guts’ bombastic lead single Vampire, the story of a bloodsucking ex, while Traitor from debut Sour has a similarly mesmerising effect.

“I want you to jump, I want you to scream, I want you to sing at the top of your lungs. Can you do that for me?!” Rodrigo asks. The answer from the crowd is a resounding yes.

The chart topper’s stage presence has by all accounts evolved since her debut Irish gig at Dublin’s Fairview Park in the summer of 2022.

Tonight she is a heady mix of raw vulnerability and self-confidence with not a single bum note on display, as she reiterates just how many bangers she already has in her arsenal.

During Guts album track Logical and Sour favourite Enough For You, she glides slowly around the arena on a suspended crescent moon, receiving piercing screams every time she drifts tantalisingly closer to fans.

But this show isn’t an overly choreographed affair in contrast to many other pop spectaculars.

[  Olivia Rodrigo: Trojan-horsing in rock’s musical brashness under the cover of pop stardom  ]

Instead, it leaves room for the ballads to breathe during a midway acoustic section, and for Rodrigo to rock out, stomp and bound across the stage with abandon during the up-tempo numbers with backing from her all-woman band.

Although there are multiple bells and whistles including an impressive V-shaped walkway, dancers and an explosion of star-shaped confetti during closer Get Him Back!, the truth is that in reality Rodrigo doesn’t need any of it.

The songs, as well as her undeniable star quality, are more than enough. Watch out, Taylor Swift. She’s coming for your spot.

LIVE REVIEW: The Proclaimers – at O2 City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne

LIVE REVIEW: The Proclaimers - at O2 City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne

The Proclaimers kicked off their 35-date UK & Ireland tour at the O2 City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne. It may be 35 years since their first hit single Letter From America , but the Brothers Reid showed the Tyneside audience that they are far from done.

Opening their set with the song “Dentures Out” from their latest and 12 th studio album of the same name, Craig and Charlie Reid hit their stride from the first second, much to the crowd’s joy. Following up with “Over and Done With” and “There’s a Touch”, the crowd at the sold-out show were well and truly warmed up. The set bounced around the Leith-born lads’ catalogue, with ten of their twelve studio albums represented throughout the show.

LIVE REVIEW: The Proclaimers - at O2 City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne Credit: Iam Burn

A whopping 24-song set came at you like musical machine gun fire, with four songs taken from their latest release. Thankfully, there were a few moments of calm when they slipped into ballad mode. Songs such as “Streets of Edinburgh” and “Restless Soul” gave everyone a well-earned rest to relax in their seats and let the music wash over them. Little did I know it was because of the musical onslaught to follow!

The Reid brothers, assisted by their excellent band, moved up the gears, generating much singing, dancing and general flapping of limbs around the venue. The crowd were bouncing as anthems such as “Cap in Hand”, “Letter From America”, “Sky Takes the Soul “, and “Life With You” was delivered with such passion . I’ve seen The Proclaimers a few times over the last thirty years, but I have never heard them sound better. The brothers turned 60 recently, but they proved that age is just a number.

LIVE REVIEW: The Proclaimers - at O2 City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne

Just when I thought the crowd may have run out of juice, Edinburgh’s finest decided to hit the turbo button. They had played us good and proper. Time to inhale and go again! “Sunshine on Leith” was sung with such gusto by the 2,000+ crowd (and The Proclaimers). I’m sure they heard it at Easter Road.

It was superb to watch such happiness circulate around the O2 City Hall. You could feel the buzz penetrate through you. As their set concluded with more singalong classics such as “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, you appreciate how much they are loved by their fans. It isn’t just a gig; it’s a party with mates and the sharing of good times. The Proclaimers are the party hosts serving song after song for your delectation. Judging by their latest album and this polished live performance, the Reid twins have much more left in the tank. Over and done with? Not bloody likely!

A big shout out to John Bramwell, who was the support act. The former I Am Kloot frontman warmed the audience up with his blend of acoustic alt-rock and great banter with the audience between songs.

Rep DeSaulnier in hearing

Scott, DeSaulnier Urge DOJ to Enforce PREA, Address Rampant Sexual Abuse at FCI Dublin

WASHINGTON   – U.S. Representatives Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) and Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) sent  a letter   to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland urging the Department of Justice to immediately address rampant sexual assault that took place at the recently closed Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Dublin, California.

“FCI Dublin has garnered a reputation as a facility where staff commit widespread sexual assaults with impunity and there exists a pervasive culture of abuse,”  the letter states . “This is a situation that should never happen. Incarcerated individuals should be able to expect to serve out their sentences without fear of violence, abuse, or reprisals, and there should be adequate federal safeguards in place to ensure that.”

Representatives Scott and DeSaulnier urged Attorney General Garland to fully enforce the  Prison Rape Elimination Act , which Congressman Scott sponsored in 2003.

“The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was enacted to end the epidemic of prisoner rape in the United States,”  the letter continues .  “With PREA standards being implemented as intended, no prison should be able to garner a reputation as a site of rampant sexual abuse. However, PREA cannot be the only protection in place for prisoners. Ensuring that every BOP facility fully implements and consistently complies with the national PREA standards is a critical measure, but it is only a starting point. Nor can we rely on a passing PREA audit every three years to ensure that people in custody are free from sexual abuse by staff.”

The letter urges the Department of Justice to provide critical support to victims of sexual abuse at FCI Dublin.

“The Department of Justice must do more to provide support to the incarcerated women who experienced, witnessed, and were otherwise harmed by the rampant sexual abuse at FCI Dublin,”  the letter reads.   “At a minimum, DOJ must provide trauma-informed emotional support services, from providers external to BOP, for the women and staff who lived and worked at FCI Dublin while the abuses were occurring. The Department must provide support services that are trauma-informed, with organizations and individuals with specific expertise in supporting survivors of sexual abuse in detention. This is of immediate concern for the victims at FCI Dublin.

Full text of the letter can be found  HERE  and below.

The Honorable Merrick B. Garland

Attorney General

U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20530-0001

Dear Attorney General Garland,

The recent and ongoing media reports of the severe pattern of staff sexual abuse of women in custody at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Dublin are deeply disturbing. FCI Dublin has garnered a reputation as a facility where staff commit widespread sexual assaults with impunity and there exists a pervasive culture of abuse. This is a situation that should never happen. Incarcerated individuals should be able to expect to serve out their sentences without fear of violence, abuse, or reprisals, and there should be adequate federal safeguards in place to ensure that.

I am troubled by the recent announcement that FCI Dublin will be closing and inmates are already in the process of being transferred to other facilities. The way that this sudden closure has been implemented has reportedly left the women of FCI Dublin unable to communicate with their care providers and families about where they are going, or appeal their transfer. Under order from Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) must perform medical evaluations and a review of those eligible for release before moving an inmate from FCI Dublin [1] . This process has not been followed. Medically vulnerable inmates, those who are victims of sexual assault at the facility, and those with pending compassionate release requests have been transferred and put on buses and planes to locations hundreds or thousands of miles away with allegedly limited access to basic amenities like heat, food, and water.

The closing of the facility has also triggered a wide dispersal of the staff as they seek new employment. Both incarcerated people and staff are being transferred away from Dublin with almost no notice, no opportunity to prepare, and no opportunity to debrief or receive support. This is particularly concerning in its implications on the ability of the Special Master Wendy Still to complete her investigation into the abuses perpetrated at FCI Dublin. Special Master Still requires full access to identify and speak to all victims, witnesses, and perpetrators in these matters in order to properly deliver justice. Without the ability of a proper staff review to be held, potential abusers are now simply returning back into the system with no accountability.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was enacted to end the epidemic of prisoner rape in the United States. With PREA standards being implemented as intended, no prison should be able to garner a reputation as a site of rampant sexual abuse. However, PREA cannot be the only protection in place for prisoners. Ensuring that every BOP facility fully implements and consistently complies with the national PREA standards is a critical measure, but it is only a starting point.

Nor can we rely on a passing PREA audit every three years to ensure that people in custody are free from sexual abuse by staff. A DOJ-certified PREA auditor conducted the on-site phase of FCI Dublin’s most recent PREA audit from September 21-23, 2021 to assess PREA implementation for the preceding 12 months. [2]  On September 24, 2021, just one day after the PREA auditor concluded the site visit, the warden of FCI Dublin was charged with sexual abuse of an inmate. [3]  Trial evidence subsequently established that the warden had abused three incarcerated women from December 2019 until July 2021. The warden was the first of eight BOP staff to be convicted of sexually abusing women at FCI Dublin during 2019-2021 [4] . Nonetheless, the final PREA audit report gave FCI Dublin a perfect score, concluding that FCI Dublin had met the requirements of all 45 PREA standards.

PREA audits are not designed to assess facility or agency culture. At best, PREA audits help ensure that the proper systems are in place to provide a basis to prevent, detect and respond to sexual abuse. At worst, passing PREA audits can be used by agencies such as BOP to claim that they are doing everything required. And when evidence conclusively proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that that is simply not true, we must do more.

In 2022, the Department of Justice (DOJ) published the “Report and Recommendations Concerning the Department of Justice’s Response to Sexual Misconduct by Employees of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.” The working group behind this report was tasked with providing recommendations to improve the Bureau of Prison’s response to sexual misconduct perpetrated by staff and within BOP facilities. A number of recommendations related to PREA were included in the report, including the direction that guidance be issued to staff reiterating that all allegations of misconduct must receive individualized and equitable treatment; that BOP explore already existing PREA-related resources; that BOP ensure compliance with PREA standards with regard to policies and practices on restrictive housing; and that BOP approach investigations consistently with PREA.

The Department of Justice must do more to provide support to the incarcerated women who experienced, witnessed, and were otherwise harmed by the rampant sexual abuse at FCI Dublin. At a minimum, DOJ must provide trauma-informed emotional support services, from providers external to BOP, for the women and staff who lived and worked at FCI Dublin while the abuses were occurring. The Department must provide support services that are trauma-informed, with organizations and individuals with specific expertise in supporting survivors of sexual abuse in detention. This is of immediate concern for the victims at FCI Dublin.

The BOP, in their statement about closing Dublin, acknowledged that they could not keep people safe there. However, closing FCI Dublin without getting to the truth of how staff were able to get away with sexually abusing incarcerated people for so long will not stop sexual abuse in BOP facilities. Indeed, transferring FCI Dublin staff before the Special Master is able to do her job raises the possibility that staff who may have covered up or even committed sexual abuse themselves will simply be able to victimize other people at different BOP facilities. In addition, transferring the people who have been living at FCI Dublin to other facilities will not guarantee their safety — although it will disrupt their access to sexual abuse counseling services and support that they currently receive from community-based advocates. We urge the BOP to:

  • Abide by Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ order to halt all transfers until each person can be evaluated for potential release and medically cleared;
  • Allow the Special Master and her team to continue their work and to develop meaningful recommendations for the BOP and issue a public report on their findings;
  • Review every possible avenue to avoid further traumatizing the people who have been living in Dublin, and evaluate each person for: compassionate release, clemency, release to home confinement, release to community confinement;
  • Begin an inquiry into Director Peters’ conduct, including when the decision to close Dublin was actually made, what planning was done, how the BOP plans to ensure that the former Dublin residents get the care they need and deserve, and how staff transfers will be handled to ensure that staff who were not complicit are supported and so that staff who were either abusive or complicit are held accountable.

I respectfully request prompt responses from the Department on the following queries:

  • How is the Department of Justice ensuring that victims at FCI Dublin and beyond have access to external victim services including counseling?
  • How has the Department of Justice implemented the PREA-related recommendations from their 2022 working group report?
  • How does the Department of Justice center trauma and gender-informed support and techniques for inmates and staff?
  • How will the Department of Justice ensure compliance with Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ orders regarding FCI Dublin’s operation?
  • How will the Department of Justice ensure that the Special Master’s investigation will not be impeded in any way?
  • How does the Department of Justice plan to prioritize the release of eligible prisoners in FCI Dublin through compassionate release, home confinement, etc.?
