12 Best Barcelona Food Tours

Never mind the museums and churches, the best Barcelona food tours are reason alone to travel to Spain’s coastal city.

Barcelonian cuisine is inspired by Catalonia and other Spanish regions. Restaurants and markets reflect the season but you can rest assured that seafood, cured meats, and cheeses are available year-round in the city.

Most Barcelona food tours focus on tapas and pintxos (appetizers served on bread) while wine is usually included in the package. This post has the inside scoop on the top-rated tapas and wine tours in Barcelona.

Best Barcelona Food Tours

As Barcelonian and Catalan food revolves heavily around meat, fish, and cheese, the majority of the tours are unsuitable for vegans. However, most operators are able to accommodate vegetarians provided you make a dietary note at the time of booking.

This guide will match you with the best food tour in Barcelona according to your tastes, budget, and travel itinerary.

1. Barcelona Tapas Walking Tour with Food, Wine, and History

Taste the best of Catalan cuisine on this Tapas Walking Tour with Food, Wine, and History . It’s a three-hour tour focused on gastronomy and the cultural history of the city and Catalonia.

The excursion is headed up by a local guide who is well-versed in history and gastronomy and will be happy to answer any questions.

This walking food tour of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is easily accessible from central hotels. The itinerary covers four bars where you will share tapas dishes and sample a mix of wine, cava, and vermouth. In addition, you’ll score an explanation of how to make your own sangria back home.

Open to solo travelers as well as couples and groups and at a great price, it’s a solid all-rounder.

Price: from $62 per person

Duration: 3 hours

Departure time: 2.15 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Explore the history and architecture, as well as the food around Barcelona.

2. Tapas and Wine Walking Tour in Barcelona with Optional Flamenco

This Tapas and Wine Experience Small-Group Walking Tour gives you the choice of a lunch or dinner slot. It’s slightly costlier than the average tapas and wine tour in Barcelona although that’s reflected in the amount of food you receive. Consider this a full meal!

Either way, you will visit four tapas taverns in the Gothic Quarter and El Born quarters. At each, you will try a variety of meat, cheese, fish, and bread tapas plates as well as a glass of premium wine.

By choosing the evening tour, you also have the option to tap on a flamenco performance. This requires advance booking although you’ll pay the venue for the show. Upgrading makes this one of the best Barcelona food tours for an all-around cultural experience.

Price: from $102 per person

Duration: 3-4 hours

Departure time: 11 a.m. or 6 p.m.

3. Street Food and Sightseeing in Barcelona with a Market Visit

The Street Food and Sightseeing Tour takes place in and around Mercat de la Boqueria off La Rambla.

Your guide will steer you around the vendors while sharing tips, tricks, and recipes about Barcelonian and Catalan food. Along the way, you’ll stop off at a traditional family-run stall. This is where you’ll sample a mix of jámon, cheese, patatas bravas, and pastries – or vegetarian tapa.

At a low price point, this is the best walking food tour in Barcelona on a budget. This tour does require a minimum booking of two people per party and drinks are not included. The market is also one of the best free things to do in Barcelona that you can explore independently.

Price: from $20 per person

Duration: 2.5 hours

Departure time: 11.30 a.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Local experience, budget travelers

No Barcelona food tour would be complete without tasting some Iberico ham!

4. Barcelona Electric Bike Small Group Tour with Tapas and Wine Tasting

One of the best Barcelona food tours for adventurous foodies, the Electric Bike Small Group Tour takes place via a fleet of two-wheelers. Fortunately, these bikes save you from having to pedal too much when you have a belly full of cheese.

The route covers El Born, Barceloneta Port, and Ciutadella Park. Stops are designed to show you the sights in between ducking into four different tavern bars and wine cellars. Main roads are avoided as much as possible and you’ll steer clear of congested streets.

Getting around on an e-bike means you cover far more ground compared to a walking tour. Therefore, it’s a clever way to maximize your Barcelona itinerary and see a bit of the coastline. Before you set off, your guide will explain how to use the bikes while helmets are provided for safety.

Price: from $70 per person

Duration: 3.5 hours

Departure time: 4 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Outdoorsy travelers, covering a lot of ground

The guide will provide insight into ingredients used in Barcelonian, Catalan, and Spanish cooking that are available to vegans and vegetarians. A glass of kombucha, vermouth, and one other alcoholic (beer or wine) or non-alcoholic drink is included in the price.

Before the activity culminates, you’ll receive a PDF guide to eating plant-based in Barcelona. This covers restaurants with vegan menus as well as general tips that might inspire you to cook a meat-free Catalan feast back home. This is a small group tour capped at six pax.

Price: from $80 per person

Departure time: 12 p.m.

6. Tipsy Tapas Food Crawl Walking Tour with Tastings

The Tipsy Tapas Food Crawl Walking Tour with Tastings is the best tapas tour in Barcelona’s El Born quarter. It’s an evening tour for social travelers – solo explorers and couples alike.

The route takes you to taverns in this trendy neighborhood where you’ll taste a mix of traditional and modern tapas. While you tuck in, your guide will dish the details about Catalan cuisine and explain how it has evolved over the decades. All plates are paired with wine, beer, and/or cava.

There may also be a couple of shots on the agenda, so wear your party shoes and consider this the gateway to a lively night in Barcelona.

Departure time: 5 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Socializing and nightlife

The seafood in Barcelona should not be missed.

7. Secret Food Tour in Barcelona

The walking food tour in Barcelona by Secret Food Tours is an in-depth study of the city’s history, culture, and cuisine. Foodie stops include an ancient Catalan bakery, a market, a tapas bar, and a paella restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

As well as the typical plates of cured ham and regional cheeses, you’ll sample a “surprise” dish. All tours include wine tastings although it’s possible to add the upgraded drinks package to your booking.

Sunday tours differ slightly as they focus on what a Barcelonian family would usually eat when gathering over the weekend.

These tours start with breakfast churros before heading to a restaurant for seafood tapas and culminating over stew, calçots (green onions), and wine from a porrón (wine pitcher). If you happen to be in town over a weekend, this is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a unique culinary experience.

Price: from $94 per person

Duration: 3-3.5 hours

Be sure to try one of the most famous tapa in Spain, a gilda!

8. Paella Cooking Experience and Boqueria Market Tour

This paella masterclass is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a hands-on approach. The Paella Cooking Experience and Boqueria Market Tour starts off in the city’s main market.

A professional chef will guide you through the marketplace and introduce you to the best tapa in Mercat de la Boqueria.

After that, you’ll assemble your own Basque pintxos (also known as montaditos). As you nibble at these, you’ll watch the chef cook a paella in front of you, using fresh seafood and seasonal veggies from the market. The grand finale is to divvy up the rice and dive in – while dipping sangria that you’ll have made yourself.

Although this is more of a demonstration than a traditional cooking class, the chef will call upon group members to assist at certain points. You do have a sangria mixing class though plus you’ll receive the recipes for all items made during the tour.

Price: from $69 per person

Departure time: 1 p.m., 4 p.m., or 6.45 p.m.

10. Barcelona Sailing Adventure: Winery Tour, Tasting, and Lunch

This is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a luxury experience. The Barcelona Sailing Adventure departs from Port Olímpic and journeys north to Alella. Once there, you’ll hop into a minivan and visit a family-run winery for a traditional Catalan lunch and wine tasting.

While you’re there, you’ll also enjoy a vineyard and cellar tour to digest your meal. It’s a bit pricey but it’s a great way to get a sense of Catalan food, visit a winery, and see Barcelona from the sea.

The journey back to Barcelona is via road although weather conditions can mean that the travel method is flipped. The tour operates all year although it only runs a couple of days a week during winter.

Price: from $128 per person

Duration: 4 hours

Departure time: 10 a.m.

Remembering the details of 10 different tours is essentially mission impossible, so here’s a handy chart summarizing each tour’s highlights! For those viewing on your phone, turn your phone sideways so the information reads on the long side!

A tapas tour in Barcelona can cost as little as $43 USD and be as expensive as $500+ USD. It’ll all depends on the duration, inclusions, and type of tour your select. But, in general, I would say that the average tapas and wine tour in Barcelona lasts for about 3 hours and costs about $80 – $120 USD.

A picture of Patatas Bravas.

That said, the 10 specific tours I have mentioned above range from $55 USD (the Cocktail class) to almost $500 USD for the full-day tours into the countryside!

So as you can see, there’s a wide range of options and there’s a pretty good chance of finding an experience that matches your interests and budget!

After reading the previous section, you might be thinking, “Oh, heck no!” First of all, that’s totally fair. I also cannot afford a $500 tour presently.

Fortunately for both of us, there are plenty of more budget-friendly options available! But, if the price isn’t enough to persuade you to take a tapas tour… here are some other reasons why I wholeheartedly believe wine and tapas tours in Barcelona are worth it.

First, Barcelona has some of the best tapas in the world! A tour allows you to sample a wide range of specialties all in one go, without having to research each place. You get instant access to all the local favorites that the majority of tourists miss.

Second, going with a tour group means that you get access to an expert guide who knows the history and culture behind Spanish cooking. This not only makes for a much more memorable experience but also gives you the opportunity to pick up some useful tips on hidden gems to visit during the rest of your stay in the city.

A picture of Kristin and her friend as they eat tapas and paella in Barcelona.

In addition, these tours are designed to be social — so they’re an awesome way to meet locals and other travelers alike. You’ll be able to chat with your tour guide, ask questions, and make some new friends in the process!

Finally, at the end of the day, we all have to eat at some point and there’s nothing quite like going on an immersive food tour to delight your taste buds. Thus, you might as well eat like a king and queen because it’s not every day you’re discovering a new city and culture! So, if you couldn’t tell…in my completely biased opinion, a tapas tour in Barcelona is 100% worth it.

  • ✅  Book ahead of time:  Due to the popularity of food tours, try to book your experience ahead of time. That way you avoid missing out on your preferred time slots or experiences that fill up quickly.
  • 📆  Schedule tours early:  I recommend scheduling your food tour as early in your trip as possible! This way you can get an overview of the city and can ask your guide for insider details on places to visit during the rest of your stay! Plus, it’s always fun to start on a high note!
  • 🍴  Have dietary restrictions? : Be sure to tell the food tour guide in advance of any dietary restrictions and allergies you have. They can normally make accommodations as long as you let them know ahead of time.
  • 🍷 Don’t drink on an empty stomach: As I mentioned earlier, for more wine-focused tours like the Cocktail class or day tours, be sure to eat something ahead of time! Excessive amounts of alcohol on an empty stomach is not fun… *from my personal experience 🫠*

A picture of the beach in Barcelona on a sunny day!

  • 🌞  Check the weather:   Check the weather before you leave and plan accordingly.
  • 🚗  Check departure points and times:   Make sure to double-check the meeting point for your tour and take into account the time it’ll take you to get there from your housing accommodations. Only a couple of the tours include direct pick-up from your hotel.
  • 📸  Bring your Camera:  Capture the experience & take plenty of pictures so you can share your story with friends & family back home!
  • 🤠  Enjoy the experience:  Above all else, make sure to relax, have fun & immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Barcelona! Bon Appetit! 🍽️😊

In the event that you haven’t booked your housing accommodations in Barcelona yet, here are some places I recommend checking out… because there are literally 1,300+ hotels in the city, so I know it can be a bit daunting. These are based on where I’ve personally stayed in the city and outside research I’ve done while figuring out where to stay. They are all highly rated, centrally located, and within a couple of minutes’ walking distance from a metro station!

There are literally hundreds of varieties of tapas available to try in Barcelona. But, some of the crowd-favorites include Jamón Iberico de Bellota, Bombas, Patatas Bravas, and Pintxos.

The average tapas in Barcelona costs €3 – €5 if you’re eating at your typical local shop. However, gourmet tapas can cost as much as €12 – €15!

Barcelona is huge and there are so many things to do in the city. I recommend spending at least 4 days, ideally 5 or more in the city if you can. It’s definitely not one of those cities you want to only spend a day or two in!

Similar to tipping in France or anywhere else in Europe, you are not required to tip in Barcelona. Service fees are already included in the price of the item. That said, if you think you have phenomenal service or would like to tip your tour guide, it’s always welcome.

Some of my other favorite things to do in Barcelona included visiting the iconic Sagrada Familia , enjoying the view from Park Guell , and appreciating the works in the Picasso Museum! And for anyone trying to cross some countries off their list, you can even day trip to Andorra !

All in all, Barcelona’s tapas tours are the perfect way to explore the city’s rich culture and history while tasting some of the most iconic dishes.

Whether you prefer a small group experience or are looking for an opportunity to connect with lots of other people, there is something for everyone.

So don’t miss out on embarking on an unforgettable gastronomic adventure through the beloved city of Barcelona!

The 7 Best Barcelona Tapas Tours [2024 Reviews]

Barcelona is a city filled with history, fascinating culture, beautiful views, and good food – more specifically, tapas. No trip to Barcelona is complete without trying their traditional tapas, which are essentially small dishes of food that are meant to be shared.

There’s really no limit to the type of food tapas can consist of, and I’ve seen them range from a bowl of almonds to a plate of grilled prawns.

As you can imagine, though, there are a ton of different tapas eateries in the city, so it can be challenging to find the best ones. I’ve decided to help out by curating the 7 top Barcelona tapas tours out there, offering insight into the traditions and cultures behind them. Let’s jump right in!

Barcelona Tapas Tour Reviews

1. barcelona tapas and wine experience small-group walking tour.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: La Rambla, 97, 97, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: Either 11:00 AM or 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  Tapas and local product tasting, wine tasting, friendly local guide, stop at 4 restaurants, walking tour through old city

If it’s your first time in Barcelona, there’s no need to fret and wonder what you should do first as this tour is the one for you. It’s the perfect intro to all things Catalan, offering not only insight into proper tapas, but the city’s layout.

With the Barcelona Tapas and Wine Experience Small-Group Walking Tour , you’ll get a crash course into the local lifestyle, lead by a guide who is there to make sure you have a fantastic time.

I felt that the 3-hour length was the perfect amount of time, equating to more or less what it would be if you went out to lunch or dinner and took a walk around the city afterward.

While tapas are quite small, the amount that you’ll get to try does add up to a full meal. They offer two different start times, so you can select either the early afternoon or evening, making it even easier to fit into a busy itinerary.

Right from the very start of the tour, it was obvious that the guide put a lot of thought into carefully selecting the restaurants part of the experience.

Expand To See More See Less

Just about every one was family-owned, with a big focus on keeping things authentic – some of the eateries had actually been around for more than a century!

We started at Plaça Sant Jaume, where we strolled through the impressive Gothic Quarter with our guide as he taught us all about its Roman origins and more.

Of course, we enjoyed plenty of delicious tapas and traditional wines to wash them all down, along the way. Thanks to the small group size, it just felt like we were delving in with a group of friends, which made the tour that much more fun.

Afterward, I felt like I had a whole new appreciation for the local culture, the city itself, and definitely fell in love with tapas!

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Rda. de Sant Antoni, 2, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: Between 8 & 10 PM
  • Includes:  3 bites, 3 drinks (non-alcoholic available), Vegetarian alternatives, Private guide

Every time I go somewhere new, I really try and find the places that are truly local favorites as opposed to the “best-rated”. After all, I am traveling to a new place to really get to know how locals live and learn more about their culture and traditions.

I found the Barcelona with Locals: Wine and Tapas PRIVATE Tour (Bites & Drinks Included) to be one of the best options in this regard, with a guide who’s from Barcelona and knows some of those hot hidden gems!

Our tour kicked off in the center of the city, which was convenient to access and not too far from my hotel. Upon meeting our guide, I was glad to find just how welcoming and knowledgeable he was of the history and local life.

As it is a private tour, it was just a few of us so we were able to ask questions as we saw fit and got to have some control over the itinerary that day.

Our first stop of the day was at the Mercat de Sant Antoni which is known for its countless vendors that sell everything from fresh produce to clothes and home goods!

I learned that many locals will do their grocery shopping here, and many restaurant owners pick up all of their ingredients from the market as it’s just so fresh and high-quality.

After this, we made our way to “Tapas street”, which is aptly-named as it’s literally lined with tapas bars.

I absolutely loved the tapas and wine that we nibbled and sipped on while learning about the importance of wine and food in the Catalan region (spoiler alert: they’re  very  important!).

This tour included 3 bites and 3 drinks which is the fewest of any of these tours and focused a bit more on sightseeing and history, which I still quite enjoyed.

I felt it was a great balance between savoring the food and drink while getting a solid grasp of the local lifestyle and how tapas came to be a thing.

3. Barcelona: Tapas & Wine Early Evening Small Group Tour

  • Departure: Plaça de Sant Agustí Vell, 9, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Local English-speaking food guide, Expertly guided food tour, 3 tasting stops, 5 different Catalan wines

Even though I’m able to speak and understand Spanish, I still felt it was hard to find a more diverse array of tapas in the places I’d gone on my own.

However, with the Barcelona: Tapas and Wine Early Evening Small Group Tour , I was able to try many different wines and tapas I’d never had before. I  almost  felt like a local wandering down the cool, bustling neighborhoods outside of the touristy areas!

There are many different start times available, though as it’s just 3 hours I felt it was easy to substitute dinner at a restaurant with this tour.

I met up with our guide and the rest of our group at El Born, which is notoriously medieval and is largely built on a Muslim burial site. It is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Barcelona, but is also lined with fantastic tapas bars.

I really enjoyed the Restaurant Santagustina, which is currently one of the most popular gourmet tapas bars and offers a nice variety of both traditional and more “modern” tapas.

I was really surprised at how affordable the glasses of wine were – even the highest-quality bottles! I highly recommend “Grandma’s Meatballs”, which are small but packed full of flavor and are nice and moist!

After that, we got to see Bastaix and learn about white wine and fortified wine’s resurgence before really diving deep into the history of tapas at Pla B. We had some more homemade wine here, expertly paired with savory Iberian pork or braised beef.

Our small group had a great time learning and seeing more of Barcelona, and we were able to chat and make friends, too!

4. Barcelona Tapas, Taverns and Gothic Quarter History Tour

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure:  Pl. de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Spain
  • Departure Time: 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 PM
  • Includes:  Local English-speaking guide, Expertly guided walking tour, 3 tasting stops with 10+ tastes and 5 drinks

Barcelona has so many fascinating, beautiful places to experience that it can be hard to accomplish everything you want in just one trip.

The Barcelona Tapas, Taverns and Gothic Quarter History Tour lead my through the center of the city’s culinary and historical heritage with passionate guides and a small tour setting.

The seamless melding of gastronomy and history came to be through fascinating stories and anecdotes that brought the past to life!

Like most of the tours on this guide, this one also starts in central Barcelona, with an easy-to-access starting point. This guide started at 5:30 pm, so I’d recommend it as the perfect alternative to going to a nice dinner at a restaurant.

Oh, and while it’s not the main “selling point”, strolling around the cobblestone streets as the sun sets on the city is absolutely breathtaking and perfect for photos!

Our first stop had us trying plenty of local charcuterie like smoked salchichas and cured cheeses paired nicely with national sparkling and fortified wines.

After that, we walked some of it off by seeing Roman ruins in the Gothic Quarter, learning about Columbus and the ’92 Olympics along the way. We then arrived at our second and third stops consisting of lively tapas bars, where we tried some red wine, fried fish, olives, and much more.

I loved Bodega La Palma, which is more of a sit-down, “proper” dinner with nearly a century of history highlighting artists and bohemians.

The last stop was quite possibly my absolute favorite of any tapas tours, where we got to try the Spanish version of French toast topped with rich ice cream! Combine all that, with the fact that our guide was one of the best I’ve ever had, and I’ll definitely take this tour again.

5. Barcelona Electric Bike Small Group Tour with Tapas and Wine Tasting

  • Departure: Plaça de Sant Agustí Vell, 16, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  Small group tour, local professional guide, bottled water, glass of champagne, wine tasting, food tasting, fees and taxes

As you can probably tell, I’ve been on quite a few different types of Barcelona tapas tours. However, this tour stood out to me not only because of the content, but because of the convenient and thrill of riding electric bikes around the city’s bustling streets.

The Barcelona Electric Bike Small Group Tour with Tapas and Wine Tasting  maximizing the time spent, allowing us to cover more ground and perhaps even access some hidden corners of the city that walking tours don’t allow for.

Starting in central Barcelona, we met up with our guide and were given a briefing on how to use the bikes as well as go for a little practice run before we set off.

Our group was very small which was ideal for riding bikes, and I found everything to be quite easy. As they’re electric, you hardly have to pedal for it to propel forward, which honestly was probably even easier than walking around!

This tour focused much more on history, and we got to see where people used to joust during medieval times, a house cut in half, food markets, and much more.

We cruised around one of my favorite neighborhoods – El Born – where we saw the beautiful Centre Cultural, Parc de la Ciutadella, Parliament buildings, and much more. We then arrived at La Barceloneta, which kind of gives off a Miami vibe today but was once a quaint fishing village!

La Rambla was up next, where we enjoyed plenty of art and architecture before arriving at a tasty tapas bar for some cheese, bread, cured meats, and wine!

This is a great intro to tapas and Barcelona, in general, making it a fantastic tour for those visiting the city for the first time. Plenty of great company, great discoveries, and a nice selection of wines and little dishes!

6. Barcelona Flamenco Show & Tapas Tour with Drinks in the Born

  • Duration:  3 to 4 hours
  • Departure: C/ de Sant Pere Més Alt, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  Bilingual Guide Tour, Tapas & Pintxo Tour (2 Bars), Drinks included in each bar, Walking Tour, Flamenco Show in a Medieval Palace

It’s not every day that one gets to experience the soul-stirring Flamenco in an intimate setting, nestled within the historic walls of a 17th-century palace. This immersive tour promises an unforgettable evening full of great music, dance, and culinary treats.

The Barcelona Flamenco Show & Tapas Tour with Drinks in the Born  is an enchanting experience that transports you to a bygone era of elegance and charm.

While I believe this tour is great for any adult traveler, I find this option to be best for a romantic night out with a significant other! It includes a delicious dinner anyway, complete with a show and a full-fledged history tour of the Gothic Quarter and El Born!

There were a lot of moving parts for this tour to work out well, and everything went off without a hitch!

We started off with a casual walking tour, learning about the Roman ruins, the Gothic architecture (which is even more impressive in person, by the way!), and much more.

I fell in love with the baroque 17th-century Dalmases Palace, which we were lucky enough to go inside to enjoy the Flamenco show!

The guitar player was absolutely phenomenal, and the dancers were mesmerizing to watch. As we watched and listened, we sipped on a couple of drinks and were able to relax in the comfy seats.

To wrap it all up, we enjoyed a delicious gourmet dinner at one of Barcelona’s best pintxos restaurants, including dishes like pan con tomate, tortillas, croquetas, calamares, and much more.

This tour was a nice balance of walking, sitting, sipping, and eating, for a well-rounded experience I’d recommend to anyone.

7. Gothic Quarter Evening Tapas Tour with The Barcelona Taste

  • Departure: Pl. de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, 2, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Local expert guide, dinner, alcoholic beverages, soda

One of the most captivating neighborhoods of Barcelona is the austere Gothic Quarter, so when I saw there was a tour that focused specifically on it, I didn’t hesitate.

The Gothic Quarter Evening Tapas Tour with The Barcelona Taste  led by expert guides is a later-night adventure that’ll take you through these important landmarks at a time that allows for less crowding.

If you’re interested in learning more about what local life and food looks like, place this one at the top of your list!

Just like most others on this guide, this tour clocks in at around 3 hours, which I find to be just the right amount of time for dinner and some sightseeing.

This small group setting caps out at a mere 6 participants, so you can count on a very intimate, personalized experience.

Our guide actually asked for any specific interests we may have, so they could go ahead and tailor our tour around them while making suggestions they believe we may like.

We began in the Plaza de Ramon Berenguer el Gran and through the famous Ciutat Vella, where we got to see ancient Roman walls, cathedrals, beautiful plazas, and many reputable tapas bars.

Every single restaurant we visited was new or me, and I loved how we were shown more hidden gems and charming places that only locals would frequent. Our guide was not only fun and friendly, but did a great job at offering us a deeper understanding of Barcelona’s rich culinary heritage.

We got 3 different restaurant choices to pick from, and the pre-selected tapas option was pretty tasty for me, as well.

Our entire group did share the plates (as tapas are intended to be, though to be honest, sharing plates with “strangers” wasn’t as weird as it may sound. From drinks and fun adventures to trying new things, this is a wonderful way to fill up on something other than a typical dinner.

Arcano Restaurant

the tour guy Barcelona

€€ | Catalan Tapas | Creative Cuisine | Cool Historic Setting

The owners have somehow been able to create a modern setting within the stone walls of this 17th-century space. The combination of styles is different and so is the cuisine. The staff is very friendly and the overall ambiance is great.

The cuisine here is Mediterranean with a variety of meat and fish dishes. You can opt for a combo where you get chicken together with empanadas which are delicious. As a starter, I recommend the tuna tartare or the burrata. The beef tenderloin as the main course is excellent or tuna with a sweet mango chili sauce. Wash it down with a rioja and your night is set!

€€€€ | Michelin Star | Amazing Experience | Open Kitchen

Caelis’ Michelin star helps to ease any doubts you may have when choosing a restaurant and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Chef Romain Fornell has created a fantastic experience on all levels from the ambiance to the food and the service. The open kitchen style is always a plus.

As you already know it is not cheap, but it is also not as expensive as some Michelin restaurants. While spending €250 for two people is not on most people’s radar, I do like to splurge once in a while when I travel. If you can, this is the place. They offer multiple-course menus (and vegetarian options as well) which range between €95 to €140, not including wine.

La Plata’s owner Pepe claims that his establishment is the last authentic place in the city to get tapas. That means the food is simple and the wine goes down easily. While I’m not sure if this is the only authentic place to get tapas, I will say that every time I go to Barcelona, I make sure to stop by. If you’re looking for a no-frills eatery, this is your place.

Seating is limited as is the menu, but the quality of what they have is top-notch. You’ll find many locals here chatting about soccer games and politics. The wine is poured directly from barrels above the bar and the food comes out fast. Enjoy!

The restaurant is near the Picasso Museum, so it’s a great place to go after visiting the museum. While it’s also quite small, the ambiance is super chill and the staff is ready to help with any requests you have.

On the menu, you’ll find typical tapas such as fried anchovies and patatas bravas. However, they also serve a killer paella, spare ribs, and burrata. If you go, make sure you try the vermut (vermouth) as they have some very tasty brands!

Located right next to the ancient Roman walls, they claim that this was the first bistro restaurant to open in Barcelona. The ambiance is eclectic and makes you feel right at home when you walk in. The delicious smell coming from the kitchen will definitely keep you there.

The restaurant serves up a great balance of fish and meat dishes. They vary from swordfish carpaccio to grilled sea bass and duck confit in a port sauce. I would wash it all down with a nice chilled bottle of cava. If you have room, they have some amazing homemade desserts.

Zona d’Ombra

€ | Wine Bar | Cozy Atmosphere

Whenever I go to a new city, I always head to a local wine bar to try the local wines. Zona d’Ombra has over 300 labels and it’s a great opportunity to try national wines and some you won’t find in a restaurant.

One of the great things about a wine bar is that they almost always have delicious food to go with the drinks. Zona d’Ombra is no exception. From jamón to foie gras, you’re definitely going to find something to your liking. This is a great place to go for drinks before dinner or make a night of it and stay there for a few hours. Whichever you decide, you won’t regret it.

This local restaurant is a true gem in Barcelona. Many restaurants, if not serving tapas, tend to go for an international vibe. L’antic Bocoi del Gotic has remained true to its roots and serves up fresh, regional food. I guess you could say it takes you back in time a bit.

As you walk in, you’ll encounter smiles from the staff and while not a big restaurant, it is very cozy. The menu consists of many types of vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Drink a local wine and don’t forget to try one of their homemade desserts.

€€ | Typical Catalan | Family Owned | Historic Restaurant

When you think of old-school Europe, images of family-run restaurants come to mind. If that’s what you’re looking for, this is the place. Eating here is like going into a local Catalan’s home. And they must be doing something right, because this restaurant is supposedly the oldest in Barcelona, opening in 1786.

Their menu is quite large, so there’s definitely something for everyone. Besides the typical paella, which is great, you can get a bit more adventurous with dishes like the wild boar stew or Catalan-style roasted suckling pig. It’s open mainly for lunch and only for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.

The cuisine is what I would call a mixed Mediterranean style. They have all the traditional tapas and a wide menu of various meat dishes, including steaks, and also many fish dishes. If you come here, I would forgo wine for some killer cocktails. You won’t regret it.

With chef marc vidal, april 5 - 13, 2019, boqueria to barcelona, about the tour.

Throughout our book, Boqueria: A Cookbook from Barcelona To New York, we swing open the kitchen doors to offer readers a glimpse into our restaurants and the markets, locales, and people that inspired them. This Spring, we’re excited to invite a select group of Boqueria guests to experience the magic of the Catalunya countryside firsthand with Chef Marc Vidal.

Upon your arrival in Barcelona, Chef Marc will guide you through the culinary delights of his native city, leading you to his favorite local haunts and points of inspiration: from the cobblestone streets of ‘el Born’ and the bustling aisles of La Boqueria Market, to the chef’s counters at locally lauded restaurants serving everything from rural Catalan fare to cutting-edge, modern cuisine.

Tour Price $4,912 per person – Double Occupancy  •  $5,427 per person – Single Occupancy (Airfare not included)

Saturday, April 6 Cuina de Mercat

  • Breakfast at Kiosko Univeral
  • Tour of el Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria
  • “La Hora del Vermut” at a traditional bodega
  • Free afternoon
  • Welcome dinner at a renowned, traditional Catalan bistro

Included meals: B, D

With 39 food markets scattered throughout the city, every Barcelonian has a market within a 10 minute walk from their home. Our first stop is perhaps the most famous of these markets, and the namesake of Boqueria Restaurant, el Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria (the Boqueria Market). Surrounding the market are an abundance of tapas bars and that serve the best of the market’s offering to an eager mix of chefs, shoppers and tourists. In the corner of the market is Kiosko Universal, run by a Benja – a friend of Chef Vidal – who will prepare simple but exceptionally delicious dishes from platters of fresh vegetables and seafood sourced from the nearby stalls for our breakfast. After a tour of the market we will experience “La Hora del Vermut,” the easygoing, early-afternoon tradition where friends gather to share a small snack (tapa) and an aperitif (preferably vermouth as the name suggests). Afterwards, do as Barcelonians do and enjoy a siesta, or take some time to explore the city on your own. The day will conclude with dinner at a renowned Catalan bistro – the perfect introduction to the week ahead.

Sunday, April 7 Penedès: Bubbles and Tradition

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Day trip to Penedès: Private visit and tasting at two family-run wineries
  • Picnic lunch at the second winery
  • Fee evening in Barcelona (suggestions provided)
  • Accommodation at a 4* hotel

Included meals: B, L

Today we are heading South to explore Penedès, the largest wine region in Catalunya, famous for its sparkling wines. We will visit two family-run wineries producing cava and still wines found on the menus at Boqueria. As we tour the wineries, and enjoy a picnic lunch at the vineyard, we will learn about Cava’s native grapes, the wine making history, traditions, and the special aging process that makes this wine so unique. After a day of bubbles we will had back to the city for an evening of rest, or more wine, but that’s up to you!

Monday, April 8 The last fishermen in town

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Free morning / Optional guided cultural tour of Barcelona’s Old Town
  • Private visit to the Barceloneta fishing docks and professional auction with a fisherman
  • Free time at the beach / Barceloneta area
  • Gambada (seafood) dinner at Fishermen society from La Barceloneta (private function)

Take this morning to enjoy breakfast at the hotel, savor the scenery from the rooftop, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. If you prefer exploring to lounging, you can join a guided cultural tour of Cuit Vella, the oldest district in Barcelona where Roman, Medieval and Gothic heritage coexist. Wherever you spend your day, find your way to the pier in Barceloneta at 4:30pm when the daily fishing boats arrive. We will be greeted by one of the local fishermen who will escort us to the local fish auction where the catch of cockles, clams, spiky sea urchin, multiple variety of octopus and every shape and size of squid are sold to local restaurants. After some free time at the beach or exploring the Barceloneta district, we will accompany one of the fisherman to a private venue for a “Gambada” seafood dinner – a feast including locally caught Mediterranean red prawns, succulent giant red shrimp. These gems of the sea are a favorite of Chef Marc, who serves them simply grilled on the Plancha during the summer or draped over tender meatballs alongside silky trumpet mushrooms in a hearty stew in the winter.

Tuesday, April 9 Rural flavors

  • Hotel check-out and travel to Vic, Barcelona Province, Catalunya
  • Cultural walking tour at Vic Old Town
  • Private visit to a local Embutidos producer
  • Tasting menu lunch at Can Jubany (1* Michelin) with wine pairings
  • Vichy Catalan Spa & Hotel (3*) check-in
  • Free time and access to spa

In a country with more pigs than humans (true fact!), you can imagine how important pork is to the food culture in Spain and likewise at Boqueria. Every incarnation of pork is celebrated on our menu: a rustic sandwich is made of Jamón Serrano and Manchego cheese, quail egg yolks run over spicy chorizo and crisp toasts, rich sobrasada is paired with sweet acorn squash and toasted hazelnuts and thick slabs of pork belly are folded into a “mixta” style – meat and seafood – Paella. Today we leave Barcelona and head into the country side to explore Vic, capital of the Osona region and a town renowned for its gastronomy and locally cured pork. After a cultural walk around the old town and Plaça Majos – Vic’s main square – we will visit Casa Riera Ordeix, the oldest cured pork producer in town for a taste of the traditional embutidos. Our tour of Vic will conclude with a 14+ dish tasting menu and wine pairing at one of the finest examples of rural Catalan cuisine, Can Jubany (1* Michelin), where Chef Vidal was first classically trained. Chef Nandu Jubany’s menu explores traditional flavors and the best products of the region and terrior.

Our last stop of the evening is Caldes de Malavella, a town known for its hot springs, and the Vichy Catalan factory where the famous sparkling water has been produced for over 130 years. Check into the hotel and enjoy the rest of the evening of leisure and access to the Vichy Catalan spa with its luxurious, relaxing, and often invigorating treatments.

Wednesday, April 10 Costa Brava: The legacy of El Bulli

  • Breakfast at hotel + check-out
  • Guided tour of the Vichy Catalan factory
  • Visit at Cala Montjoi, El Bulli location
  • Hotel check-in at 4* hotel – Villa Gala in Cadaqués
  • Dinner at Compartir (3 former El Bulli head chefs)

After a tour of the Vichy Catalan factory we will journey to the sandy beaches and rocky coves of Cosat Brava. It is here that the charming village of Cadaqués and the iconic Cala Montjoi, location of the former famed El Bulli, await. It has been 7 years since “the world’s best restaurant” closed, yet after a remarkable run of 27 years training several generations of renowned chefs – including our co-host and Boqueria Chef Marc Vidal – the El Bulli legacy is still alive around the world, and nowhere more so than near the cove where it was located. Ferran Adrià left so many footprints behind, but the closest to his iconic restaurant is Compartir, where we will enjoy a tasting menu with wines. Opened by the three head chefs of El Bulli, Compartir – which means “to share” – applies the cooking techniques of El Bulli to traditional dishes, all meant for sharing, in a casual al fresco setting.

Thursday, April 11 The country of wind and rice

  • Visit to a Medieval town of Empordà
  • Al Fresco traditional lunch prepared by a local chef
  • Return to Barcelona – 4* Hotel check-in

Fish, rice, wind, olive oil and wine: just some of the assets of a rich and diverse region called Empordà, who’s geographical borders – the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean and France – define a way of living and cooking. We will meet a local, young chef who will combine these ingredients to cook a memorable and traditional “family rice” in an outstanding, open-air, location. Before and after lunch you will have time to explore the well-preserved and incredible medieval towns of Empordà; walk the cobble stone streets and narrow alleys, take in the architecture and history and rest before an epic last day in Barcelona!

Friday, April 12 An evening at Tickets by Albert Adrià

  • Breakfast at hotel / Optional “esmorzar de forquilla” breakfast
  • Free morning-afternoon / Optional Iberian ham tasting with a producer at his workshop
  • Farewell dinner at Tickets (tasting menu designed for BOQUERIA, with wine pairings)

As you wake for our last day in Barcelona, opt for breakfast at the hotel or a true local breakfast, what Catalans know as “esmorzar de forquilla” (fork breakfast). Forget about avocado toasts, granola, and matcha lattes. This Catalan, country-style, farmer’s breakfast is hearty fare; serious food for serious eaters. Spend the rest of your day walking the streets of Barcelona and gazing at it’s amazing and varied architecture or join an optional visit to a local Iberian ham producer. Rodrigo may not be a famous name among producers, but his family has been making cured products from their own pigs for generations and meticulously looking after the entire process; from the feeding (solely with acorns) to the curing of every single leg. You will get to taste, in our not-so-humble opinion, some of the best ham and Iberian pork in Spain. By far.

Our trip to Barcelona, a true culinary mecca, concludes with a dinner at one of the world’s top 50 restaurants. Tickets is helmed by Chef Albert Adrià, a man no longer known as the younger of the Adrià brothers, a pastry chef living in the shadow of a world-renowned chef who redefined creativity in cooking. Albert Adrià is now the one who keeps the El Bulli legacy alive with a successful range of restaurants, all of them with its own identity. We will be delighted with a custom-designed menu that includes some of their best dishes and bites; all creative, inventive, rooted in the essence of play, and absolutely delicious.

Saturday, April 13 Adéu siau – Farewell

Best Tapas Tour In Barcelona

Posted on Last updated: March 23, 2024

One of my favourite things about travelling to Spain is the food. With its variety of strong flavours and interesting dishes Spain always makes me go back.

Despite my love for paella, tapas will always be my favourite Spanish dish, and what better way to learn about a city through its food?

Last time I visited Barcelona I went on a tapas tour .

We stopped at three different local tapas restaurants, far from the busy tourist spotlights of Barcelona, and tasted all the best tapas Barcelona has to offer.

Read on if you want to find out more about our Barcelona tapas tour !

Outside the Sagrada Familia, one of the most iconic spots in Barcelona

What are “tapas”?

Tapas are a typical Spanish dish, characterised by the fact it is actually composed by multiple small dishes and snacks. Originally born as small snacks, they have now evolved into a sophisticated cuisine.

A tapas meal will usually consist of 2-3 dishes per person, so that you can taste a number of different flavours.

I personally love eating tapas over a conventional main meal, because when you’re at a restaurant where everything on the menu seems good, you’re not forced to decide on just one dish!

You can have as many as you want since they’re all tiny plates anyway (within reason obviously).

If you take away only one Barcelona travel tip from this article, then it should be that having a tapas feast is a must on any Spain bucket list .

If you don’t do a tapas tour in Barcelona, you can still do it in many other Spanish cities,  for example to taste delicious tapas in Granada .

Our Barcelona tapas tour

We started our tour in Barceloneta and visited three different tapas bars. I did the tour with Gids In Barcelona , a Dutch tour company whose owner has lived in Barcelona for many years, basically a local!

The tour is normally composed of five restaurants, however since we were visiting on a Sunday, a number of these were closed.

There are lots of incredible places to eat in Barcelona though so this wasn’t an issue, he just adjusted our tapas tour route accordingly.

Odd closing times are how you know you’re going to a genuine Spanish place. Similarly to Italy, Spanish people don’t care about tourists, and will arrange their opening times around their convenience!

Don’t let that deter you. If you only have a weekend in Barcelona you’ll still be able to do an awesome tapas tour, just maybe with different restaurants than the usual.

A pinchos bar we visited on our Barcelona tapas tour

The first stop we did was at a quaint tapas bar, with an open plan kitchen so that you can see the chefs preparing the food and a wooden bar. Here we had the typical Spanish Pimientos and Patatas Bravas .

These however had a twist on the classic recipe as the sauce wasn’t made of the standard garlic mayo or spicy tomato, but of a secret recipe the owners don’t share with anyone.

They made for the perfect starter for the evening, to get us in the mood for Spanish flavours without being too filling.

Since the usual tapas bar of the tour was closed we were taken to a pinchos bar instead. Pinchos are small snacks typically served at bars that you would have while hanging out with friends or relatives.

They are different from tapas since they are usually served on bread and skewered with a toothpick.

Bars will usually have a counter with a buffet display of pinchos , and at the end of the night you pay based on how many toothpicks you have at your table.

Some places will have different coloured toothpicks for different prices. I love pinchos as there is always a wide variety of different snacks, usually including pinchos with cheese, meat, fish and vegetables.

It’s the perfect place to go if you want to eat some nibbles with friends without waiting for waiters to serve you and if you don’t want to eat too much (alternatively if you want to eat a lot, feel free to get as many pinchos from the buffet as you want)!

The third tapas bar we visited was in my mind what I imagine as the quintessential Spanish tapas bar. With its high tables and stools, tap beer counter and wooden décor, it met all the tapas bar stereotypes.

A strong indicator for me of whether a place is good is the presence of locals eating there versus just tourists; considering we were the only English speakers I could hear I was pretty confident in the authenticity of this tapas bar.

We had three different dishes;  Fried calamari with aioli, Fried courgettes served with a honey sauce  and  Spanish sausage served in a spicy sauce.

You have a web page devoted to a tapas tour but don't know any names of the restaurants. That's pretty funny.

Wednesday 29th of May 2019

Hi Mike, I purposely didn't list the restaurant names as I visited them as part of an organised tapas tour. If I listed the restaurant names you could visit them yourself cutting out the tour organiser. While I often write "do it yourself" guides in this specific case I think you would have a better experience doing a tour as opposed to bar hopping yourself, hence why I left out that info. Hope that clears out the confusion :)

From Barcelona’s towering churches and bustling avenues to the sun-drenched beaches and idyllic plazas, it’s obvious why this city captures visitors’ hearts and refuses to let go. As befits the city’s Mediterranean lifestyle, you can eat incredibly well here, and often for not very much money (though Barcelona loves a pricey tasting menu , too). But it’s also too easy to have a downright disappointing meal if you settle for any old paella-slinging bar along Les Rambles (known in Spanish as La Rambla) or La Barceloneta.

Get yourself some classic tapas and paella (both great but neither entirely Catalan), but be sure to also seek out local gems serving bitter sweet vermouth, seasonal seafood, and homestyle Catalan cuisine. Save room as well for Calabrese paninis, Northeast Asian sharing plates with natural wines, towering fried chicken sandwiches, local craft beer, dry-aged steaks, sea urchin toasts, south Indian fish stews, and Catalan nose-to-tail yakitori — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The city simmers with an astounding variety of food at all prices, from opulent old-world fine dining at the city’s original Ritz hotel to a sensory adventure through the young and ever-evolving international food scene.

Sartoria Panatieri

The team at pizzeria Sartoria Panatieri focuses on seasonality, artisan production, and ingredient provenance, taking the pies to a whole other level and making this one of the hottest spots in the city. This self-described “farm to pizza” restaurant meticulously selects every ingredient that graces its creative pizzas or goes into its exceptional house-made salumi. Tender crust from local, organic flour is the base for toppings like sobrasada, Mahón cheese, wild fennel, honey, and mozzarella, or Cantabrian anchovy with escarole and Kalamata olive puree. For their most popular classic pizzas, head to the location in Gràcia on Carrer Encarnació. As of April 2024 the flagship location on Carrer Provença will have a more modern menu with a constant rotation of new, seasonal pizza creations.

Chef Ryuta Sato built a name for himself at popular restaurant Sato i Tanaka before opening this tiny sushi bar with just eight seats specializing in omakase servings of super-premium sushi. With so few seats, you’ll need to score a reservation well in advance, but it’s worth the wait. Choose from either the long or short menu, and savor each bite straight from chef Sato’s expert hands.

Ramen-Ya Hiro

Long considered the best ramen in Barcelona, Ramen-Ya Hiro used to command massive lines of diners on Carrer Girona, until the restaurant delighted loyal customers in 2023 by finally accepting reservations after more than a decade of service. Now, hungry patrons no longer have to fight over tables to taste chef Hiroki Yoshiyki’s deeply flavorful and nuanced broths. The menu is fairly simple, with just three choices of hot ramen — soy ramen with a combination pork-chicken-seafood broth, miso ramen with a pork and chicken broth, and seafood ramen with baby clams, mackerel broth, and local seafood garnish — and two cold ramens: tsukemen (chilled noodles dusted with dry mackerel powder and lime, served with a soy yuzu dipping sauce) and hiyashi chuka (cold noodles with roast char siu pork, cucumber, bean sprouts, and egg, served with a light vinaigrette). Try to reserve a table at least a week ahead of time, though the restaurant does still save space for walk-ins each night.

Ultramarinos Marin

Don’t be deceived by the old-school appearance and simple menu at Ultramarinos Marín. Seats at chef Borja García’s open kitchen are among the most sought-after in the city, and for good reason. This humble-looking asador (grill-centric restaurant), only open for breakfast and lunch, is a temple of product-driven Catalan cooking, dedicated to holding classic recipes to the highest standard. Through his training at the iconic Etxebarri and Noma, García works magic with minimal ingredients, a hot plancha, and a smoldering wood-fire oven. The myriad in-house preparations include grilled langoustines, braised pork shanks, mackerel in escabeche, stewed snails, massive steaks, smoked beef tongue, funky garum, and briny sea urchin toast. Don’t miss the house-cured fish charcuterie or the simple yet extraordinary grilled smashed potatoes with garlic alioli.

Berbena is a popular addition to the blossoming world of chef-driven, modern Catalan cuisine in Barcelona. Grab one of the handful of tables, and begin your meal with hearty chunks of house-made sourdough smeared with rich, smoked butter. Then dive into the assortment of seasonal small plates featuring whatever is fresh that day, from grilled sea bass collar with preserved lemon to an omelet of wild mushrooms with roasted onions. Shellfish and other seafood are always in abundance, and vibrant vegetables often play a starring role in the nightly specials. The cheese selection is impressive, as are the small-production wines from local vineyards. Linger over dessert as you enjoy excellent coffee from nearby SlowMov specialty roasters and espresso from the gleaming La Marzocco machine.

Rooq makes the herb breading, tangy marinade, fermented pickles, pillowy brioche buns, and every other component of its famous fried chicken sandwiches in-house. The menu is minimal: chicken nuggets, vegan jackfruit nuggets, two salads, and three sandwich options (regular, spicy, and grilled), all made with juicy, corn-fed Catalan chicken breasts. Pick your main course and round out the meal with twice-cooked fries tossed in the house spice blend and a side of coleslaw (vinegar- or mayonnaise-based). There’s also a wide selection of craft beers, seven house-made dipping sauces, and a chocolate brownie topped with stout caramel and a scoop of ice cream.

Funky Bakers Eatery

Seyma Ozkaya Erpul is originally from Turkey but has called Barcelona home for over a decade. She left her previous career as an engineer and marketing professional to pursue her passion for great food and design, opening the first Funky Bakers in the heart of El Born. While that location remains a popular takeaway coffee shop, the full Funky Bakers experience can be had at the Eatery and Deli location in Eixample. One side is a highly curated gourmet grocery, gift, and coffee shop, while the other is an all-day bistrot serving colorful and creative dishes from around Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, all paired with natural wines.

An exciting addition to the Barcelona dining scene, this wine bar opened in April 2023 serving what the team calls Northeast Asian cuisine. The project, created together with partners Woody Wang and Arthur Holland Michel, is an evolution of various businesses — private dinners, a lunchbox delivery service, homemade chili crisp — that chef Dan Jin (who goes by Tan) developed at the start of the pandemic. Chef Tan has a particular passion for the dishes of her native region of Northern China, but she also loves the flavors of Japan and Korea. Mikan is a bargain for lunch, when a fixed price menu includes a variety of dishes, soup, and dessert (including vegan and vegetarian options). In the evenings, the exciting a la carte menu is perfect for sharing. Dishes like grilled koji-cured mackerel with green onion oil, daikon, and shiso, spicy beef salad with cilantro and chile, or Iberian pork loin katsu are paired expertly with an eclectic selection of natural wines, all from small European producers. On Saturdays, the bar features rotating local DJs starting at 11 p.m.

Little Andaman

Named for a tiny island nearly 800 miles off the coast of India in the Bay of Bengal, the cuisine of Little Andaman is light and vibrant, with coconuts, fresh herbs, seafood, and vegetables playing the starring roles in many plates. The restaurant space is chic and inviting, equally suited for a lunch with friends as it is for an intimate date night. While many dishes are inspired by the flavors of Little Andaman, the menu also features an ample array of small plates from coastal regions all across India, like mustard and five spice-seasoned shrimp skewers, tamarind fish stew, and Goa-style spiced lamb sorpotel with poi bread. The menu is extremely veggie/vegan friendly, with plenty of gluten-free options as well. There is a weekly prix fixe lunch menu Monday through Friday and three different tasting menus in the evenings (short and long tapas menus, and a vegetarian menu with vegan options), allowing diners to sample the widest variety of dishes.

La Balabusta

Barcelona’s brunch scene and design aesthetic meet the fragrant streets of Tel Aviv at Balabusta, which serves up fresh-baked challah, bone-in braised beef ribs, fired-roasted beets with creamy labneh, chicken and cauliflower shawarma with fresh pita, eggplant bunyols (like beignets), and a whole slew of bold, colorful, and vegetable-forward dishes. Check out the weekday fixed price lunch menu (popular with the local working crowd), or get in line for the weekend brunch when you can enjoy a simmering crock of hearty shakshuka.

Amar Barcelona

Rafa Zafra, former head chef at El Bulli, who has come to be known for his elegant and simplistic approach to seafood at Estimar, launched Amar inside the emblematic Palace hotel in spring 2022. The hotel, which first opened as the original Ritz Barcelona in 1919, still dazzles with opulent, old-world decor, making it a perfect stage for Zafra’s homage to classic fine dining. Amar serves a section of dishes from the original Ritz hotel restaurant menu, as well as top-quality seafood, nine dishes highlighting caviar, a handful of modern Catalan mains, whole grilled fish, vegetable sides, and Mediterranean tapas.

Sea urchin, shrimp, and caviar presented in an urchin shell.

Born in Uruguay and trained in Basque, Spain — both centers for meat in their own right — chef Joaquín Ignacio Sánchez is at the helm of Carnal, a Barcelona boho take on the traditional Spanish steakhouse. At this buzzy spot, hefty cuts of dry-aged beef are charred over oak embers, served medium-rare, and finished at the table on a searing-hot stone slab, allowing diners to dial in their preferred doneness. The steaks on offer come from around the globe and are aged in-house between 45 and 150 days, with prices that range from accessible to wildly extravagant; the menu’s most luxurious item is the 120-day-aged, 2-pound ox chuletón (bone-in rib-eye) from the legendary Bodega El Capricho near León, Spain. Before the main event, warm up with some American black angus beef cheek croquettes, flame-grilled maitake mushrooms, or A5 wagyu tartare kissed with a blowtorch and served over a caveman-esque length of roasted bone marrow. For those who don’t partake in red meat, there is a decent selection of seafood, poultry, and vegetable dishes, providing some welcome balance.

Chef Rafa Peña’s passion for food is as great as his disregard for formality and fine dining accolades. A favorite among the city’s chefs, Gresca is a must-visit for lovers of nose-to-tail cooking who want to experience the best of seasonal Catalan cuisine without the stuffy service and delicate portions of some Michelin-starred restaurants. The menu can change from day to day, but there are some mainstays that every first-timer at Gresca should experience, such as the roasted chicken with fines herbes, the calf’s brain with butter and lemon, the pan-roasted sweetbreads, and the grilled quail.

In an antique bar space with over 100 years of history, on a coveted corner in one of the trendiest parts of the Eixample, Soma opened in 2021 to instant accolades from the gourmands of Barcelona. Cozy decor and a Parisian-style terrace set the stage for a menu of Catalan tapas with a strong Italian character and hints of France. Look for duck a l’orange, galetes de socarrat de risotto (a risotto cooked until compact and crispy like the bottom of a classic paella), marinated mackerel with strawberries, and ragu-stuffed rigatoni.

Besta’s two chefs, Carles Ramon and Manu Núñez, focus on offering exceptional products from their home regions of Catalunya and Galicia, respectively. They precisely plate vibrant dishes like pickled mussels with pumpkin, tomato salad with cured blue fish, and Galician seaweed pancakes with wine-braised wild boar — though the experience of eating at Besta is generally a more casual affair than all that makes it sound. There are always a few meat dishes on the menu, but seafood is the star here; don’t miss out on the grilled zamburiña scallops and the oyster- and seaweed-infused gin tonics.

Gringa all day.

Created by Priscilla Alfaro, a Mexican American woman who grew up in Los Angeles, with her partner Gaston Gabrielli and chef Nick Hosea, this is an excellent, modern American diner where the draw is simple: truly delicious food and bottomless filter coffee from specialty roaster Three Marks Coffee. The pancakes are fluffy, the bacon is crispy, the breakfast burrito is hearty, and the Nashville hot chicken sandwich is tongue-numbingly good. Too many brunch spots in Barcelona rely on Instagram-worthy visuals to compensate for mediocre flavors and cookery, but Gringa All Day is the real deal. Expect a line on the weekends, but the wait is worth it.

It’s rare in Barcelona to see a classic trompo slowly, perfectly charring pork meat, but Xuba Tacos takes its tacos al pastor very seriously. The restaurant lovingly layers spiced pork on the spit, shaves it into thin slices, and serves it on supple, handmade blue corn tortillas. Alongside classics like al pastor and carne asada, there are also modern creations, like black beer-batter sea bass tacos with crispy leeks and sauteed lobster tail tacos with cilantro emulsion. Keep an eye out for seasonal specials, like wild mushroom and roasted chestnut tacos, and don’t miss the micheladas.

Don’t let the prime location fool you; Batea is all about excellent quality seafood without the exorbitant prices you might expect so close to the Passeig de Gràcia. The menu features the best of the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, and the kitchen strives to be classic without falling into stale tropes of tradition. Begin your meal with a mini seafood tower from the raw bar, followed by tender fried monkfish tails, cockles in dashi broth, and the Betanzos-style omelet (a Galician specialty) topped with red prawn tartare or sauteed baby squid.

Los Tortillez

An homage to the beloved tortilla (Spanish omelet), Los Tortillez gives off nostalgic 1980s airs — with red banquettes, popcorn stucco walls, retro crockery, and a tile-clad bar straight out of one of Pedro Almodóvar’s cult classics — but it’s actually a relatively recent addition to the beautified, newly pedestrianized Consell de Cent. First opened in late 2022, the restaurant has quickly become a point of reference in the city for some of the best al momento Spanish omelets. The menu includes 16 different, personal-sized tortilla variations; classic ingredients like chorizo and manchego rub shoulders with truffles, pesto, Thai curry, cilantro, bacon, and jalapenos. Round out your meal with some tapas like tender sauteed cod cheek pil pil, pork ribs braised in vermouth, and shrimp al ajillo swimming in a bath of blistering hot olive oil and sizzling garlic.

With no signage or any identifying information visible from the street, the small Suru Bar makes meals in its intimate space feel like serendipity. A row of counter seating gives diners a view into the open kitchen, where chefs prepare star dishes like grilled chicken skin skewers with chilled shrimp tartar, vibrant spring peas with smoked chorizo and cured egg yolks, and a brochette of crunchy pig ear with charred chicken gizzard and tender squid. The cuisine is seasonal, thanks to the prime location just across the street from the famous Ninot market, and the dishes range from yakitori on a traditional Japanese grill to explorations of all things offal. Meals are rounded out with an extensive selection of local and international wines.

Flax and Kale

The location of Flax and Kale just off the Pasaje de las Manufacturas is by far the brand’s best. It’s open all day, great for a weekend brunch, and the menu is distinct from the other locations, boasting the company’s astonishingly good wood-fired vegan pizzas (that also happen to be gluten-free). Chef Teresa Carles has been pioneering “flexitarian” food in Barcelona since 2014, and other highlights of her menu include bao stuffed with jackfruit “pulled pork,” house-made cilantro jalapeno kombucha, and vegan scrambles made with ackee. There are also some fish dishes, like miso-glazed Spanish mackerel with hibiscus dashi and yellowfin tuna bibimbap for those craving some extra omega-3s.

Biercab has a rotating selection of draft beer flowing from 30 taps and an international bottle list so staggeringly extensive that it borders on intimidating, so there’s likely no better place in town for lovers of craft beer. As if the tremendous selection isn’t enough, the bar has a full kitchen, offering tapas, sandwiches, burgers, lighter plates, and main courses (a rarity in Barcelona, where many craft beer bars have a small menu of basic snacks). Try the extra-spicy potatoes or the grilled wagyu steak with a house-made, hop-spiked chimichurri.

In front is a shop and wine bar called Can Cisa, and in the back you’ll find this full-service, wine-centric restaurant from twin Venetian chefs Max and Stefano Colombo. The menu combines Italian and Catalan cuisines, with an array of salty, sweet, rich, and acidic small plates, ranging from grilled octopus with pickles and beet puree to smoked sardines with apple relish. These aren’t your average tapas. All of the wine is natural, and many bottles are also biodynamic and organic. The well-trained waiters can guide any diner — from a wine novice to seasoned connoisseur — to a new, enlightened pairing for a meal.

El Xampanyet

Dating back to the 1920s and brimming with character, from the tiled walls and vintage wine bottle collection to the boisterous crowds and taciturn barmen, El Xampanyet is well known with both locals and tourists as an excellent place for an aperitivo. It’s ideal for a glass of cava, some house-cured salted anchovies, an assortment of conservas, and a sample of whatever hot dishes are on the day’s menu. Squeeze in the door and prepare for standing room only.

El Chigre 1769

Asturias and Catalunya are starkly different in culture and landscape, but at El Chigre 1769, the two cuisines exist in sumptuous harmony. Part vermuteria (vermouth bar), part sidreria (cider bar), El Chigre is housed in an ancient stone building from 1769 and offers products of Asturian fame — from spanking-fresh Atlantic shellfish to cave-aged cabrales blue cheese — alongside beloved Catalan dishes like esqueixada (chilled bacalao salad) and charcoal-roasted Pyrenees pork knuckle for two. When merriment ensues and your cider misses the glass (as it’s known to do), not to fear; the floor is blanketed with sawdust, in classic fashion, to soak up every errant drop.

Bar La Plata

This small corner bar just one block from the old port of Barcelona has been serving the same four dishes since 1945. Though the salted anchovies, fried sausage, and tomato salad are all delicious, the floured and fried boquerones (anchovies) are the true star. Now run by the grandson of the original founder, Bar La Plata sells over 85 pounds of the little fishes per week. The place is nearly always busy and only has a few tables, so do as the crowds do and eat standing up at the bar or even in the street if no seats are available.

Compà Barceloneta

Plump pork meatballs braised in tomato sauce, creamy stracciatella cheese, grilled zucchini, and a dusting of grated ricotta salata come together in one of the newest sandwiches on the menu at Compà, a panini shop dedicated to the flavors of Calabria. In addition to the original location a few streets over from the Barceloneta beach, owner Vittorio Cicero has recently expanded with a new shop in the uptown neighborhood of Gràcia, giving the city two chances to try his irresistible creations like mortadella with burrata and pistachio pesto or Calabrese lardo with spicy ‘nduja spread, smoked provolone, and roasted potatoes. Choose from nearly a dozen sandwiches including rotating specials, all served on 48-hour slow-fermented focaccia, pressed and piping hot. For an extra kick, ask to add the bomba Calabrese chile relish. There are a few tables, but the sandwiches are meant as street food, so get yours to-go and head to the beach or the nearest plaza. Just don’t forget the napkins.

Cova Fumada

One of the oldest restaurants in the beachside neighborhood of La Barceloneta, this is the birthplace of the famous “bomba de la Barceloneta,” a mouthwatering fried potato croquette stuffed with savory ground beef and topped with aioli and hot sauce, which now appears on menus all over the city. In addition to the bombas, try the calamars a la planxa (grilled squid) and grilled sardines (in summer). If you have a taste for offal, add a plate of cap i pota, an old-school Catalan stew of tripe, veal trotters, and veal head in tomato.

A longtime favorite for a mix of modern and classic tapas, Bar Cañete is a quintessential Barcelona dining experience. Tables in the bustling dining room can be reserved for groups of four or more, but otherwise it’s first come, first serve. The best seating is along the bar at the gleaming open kitchen, where diners get up-close views of chefs at work and white-jacketed servers darting back and forth with bottles of cava and artful plates of hand-cut jamón. The menu of tapas and larger plates changes with the seasons, but don’t miss house specialties like giant red prawns that arrive daily from the docks, sea anemones with cured Iberian pork belly, and runny potato omelets.

Cinc Sentits

Chef Jordi Artal and his team fill the seasonal tasting menus at two-Michelin-starred Cinc Sentits (Five Senses) with modern interpretations of Catalan cuisine. Spring might bring artichoke or venison presented with bits of molecular flair (a spherification here, a powder there). But while Artal’s dishes are undoubtedly intricate and delicately composed, they also aren’t wanting for bold flavor or heartiness. A restaurant at this level shouldn’t leave you hungry; this one doesn’t.

An artful presentation of venison, with edible horns placed around a hunk of meat, with small vegetables fixings dusted with spice powder

Suculent isn’t defined by one genre of cuisine, but packs its tasting and a la carte menus with as many delicious dishes as possible. It’s a favorite among chefs for nose-to-tail cooking and fine dining makeovers of grandma’s Catalan comfort food (with influences from Asia and Latin America). Dishes change with the seasons, but don’t miss mainstays such as the beets with beurre blanc and smoked eel, the royal custard of porcini mushrooms with sea urchin, and the braised hare canelon with foie gras and Codium seaweed.

Els Sortidors del Parlament

Found on the restaurant-rich street of Carrer del Parlament, this classic-meets-modern bodega stands out in the Sant Antoni neighborhood. Enjoy a glass of wine from the shop’s old barrels, which the business also sells “a granel” (by the liter), vermouth, and various craft beers; snack on tapas and Catalan dishes; or just browse the gourmet shop. There is a little something wonderful here for everyone.

The creation of chef Victor Ródenas and brothers Ignasi and Marc García, this youthful take on a simple Catalan casa de menjars (house of food) combines the best parts of a traditional vermouth bar with the refined, seasonal Catalan cooking of a fine dining veteran. The lively yet casual atmosphere is the perfect place to enjoy the varied dishes: confit artichokes with spring peas, sunchoke puree, and romesco, escabeche oyster shooters with chicken jus, beef tendon stew with fried hake and pickled chile peppers, and mini paella with shrimp tartare and pig trotter carpaccio. This is a gathering place for neighborhood regulars first and foremost.

Owner Badr Bennis and head chef Nicola Valle were inspired by the freedom they found in New York’s creative Italian restaurants. At the upscale yet informal Benzina (“Gasoline” in Italian), housed in a former auto repair shop, they serve a menu of updated Italian classics, incorporating international influences, non-traditional ingredients, and colorful presentations. The atmosphere is more akin to a rock and roll bar than your typical red sauce spot. The menu is refreshed every couple of months, with dishes like cacio e pepe risotto with fried squid and mandarin reduction, Roman-style gnocchi with slow-cooked rabbit and kale, balsamic-roasted pork loin with maitake mushrooms, and confit eggplant parmesan topped with basil sorbet.

Teatro Kitchen & Bar

Tickets was one of the most sought-after reservations in Barcelona, treating diners to the style of Barcelona’s old theater district in its heyday. The restaurant’s closing made way for Teatro Kitchen Bar, a reimagined take on the same theme. The average cost per diner at Teatro is a third of what it was at Tickets, making the experience much more accessible while still offering up creative tapas cooked by a team with Michelin dining pedigrees. Teatro Kitchen is the main event, but there’s also Backstage, an adjoining cocktail bar that’s the perfect place to wrap up your night.

A Japanese Mediterranean izakaya tavern, Alapar is located in the space previously inhabited by the Michelin-starred Pakta, where Jaume Marambio was head chef. After Pakta closed, Marambio joined together with partner Vicky Maccarone in early 2022 to revive the space, bringing a new vision of a casual but refined take on Japanese cuisine to the location. Marambio prepares the best seasonal products from the Mediterranean, treating them with subtlety and simplicity. Raw, pickled, marinated, grilled, and stewed preparations showcase the harmony between the flavor profiles of Japan and Catalunya.

A restaurant interior with a sushi counter set with place settings, and a bright entry beyond with plants on shelves.

Tiberi Bar was born from the Tiberi Club, a popular organizer for creative events and pop-ups that fuse eating and art. Tucked away on a quiet street in Poble Sec, the minimalist, airy interior, with high ceilings and plenty of windows, is the perfect scene for a rotating roster of colorful sharing plates inspired by Catalan traditions and the flavors of the Mediterranean, paired with unique natural wines from small local producers. Duck terrine with pistachios, crunchy polenta with sage, smoked sardine with sour cream and whole grain mustard, and a pork confit sandwich with red cabbage play upon well-worn local staples with surprising flavors.

There are plenty of places to try paella in Barcelona, but Martínez is the move. Perched on the side of Montjuïc with a panoramic view of the city and port, the restaurant is far removed from the hubbub of the beach district. To justify your journey to the table, dig into the famous rice dishes like the señorito paella — garnished with peeled and shelled seafood, which keeps fingers clean — and the decadent lobster rice, as well as classic tapas and the inviting oyster bar.

We lift the lid on the tradition of eating tapas….

23 Best Tapas Bars

5 Tasty Tours

Keep reading to discover the  best bars and restaurants for dining on tapas in Barcelona, the dishes you can’t leave the city without trying, and some selected tours for the informed foodie. Written by a local.  Que aproveche!

History of Tapas: A Kingly Tradition

There’s nothing more synonymous with Spanish cuisine than tapas, the tradition of eating small dishes as an appetiser, snack or in combination to form a main meal of the day.

In fact the influence of this tradition can be seen in restaurants all around the world, as small plates and tasting dishes have become global food trend.

As a style of eating it certainly has its advantages… after all, what could be better than mixing and matching all the glorious taste sensations of the diverse regions of Spain for supper?

…what could be better than mixing and matching all the glorious taste sensations of the diverse regions of Spain for supper?

The word ‘tapa’ in Spanish means ‘lid’, and the ‘s’ simply denominates its plural form. There are many cited origins for the tradition of eating tapas, and how they got their name, with the most romantic featuring  King Alfonso X  in a starring role. The King, also known as Alfonso the Wise, was gallivanting around his kingdom many moons ago, when he decided to visit an inn and duly ordered a  beer . The innkeeper served this refreshing pint of ale with a small complimentary dish of food on top of the glass.

Legend has it tapas started as a kingly beer snack…

The King thought it was such a good idea that he ordered all inns throughout Spain to serve food with any alcoholic drink by decree of law. A great legend, although perhaps a more probable origin is that these ‘lids’ were a custom used by Andalusian folk, in the sweltering south, to keep the flies off their sweet sherry.

Whatever the truth of the matter, the custom is widespread across the country and it’s inevitable that you’ll encounter tapas menus on your visit. To help you make sense of this intriguing gastronomic phenomenon we’ve compiled a list of typical dishes from Spain and Catalonia below, followed by a guide to some of the best tapas bars and restaurants in Barcelona – plus some suggested food tours for those that want to go further.

19 Tapas Dishes (incl. Must-trys!)

Tapas is such an integral part of Spanish culture that almost every rudimentary bar will have some basic offerings on the counter, whilst many restaurants have a tapas menu or specialise solely in the saucer-sized snacks. There are far too many to list in one article, but here are some of the classic dishes you can expect to find in any traditional-style bar in Barcelona… naturally we’ve included many of our faves. Unfortunately for more ethical eaters, virtually all feature meat or seafood, so vegans may have to look away now!

restaurant tour barcelone

Bomba (must-try!)

A fat ball of mashed potato stuffed with meat, cheese or veg and covered in bread crumbs,  La Bomba  is the classic dish of the Barceloneta district, so be sure to pop into a bar and try one when you’re on your way back from the beach. Usually spicy.

Boquerones en vinagre

restaurant tour barcelone

To the uncultured eater,  calamares  resemble onion rings, but are in fact circles of squid in batter. Chewy but delicious, and best with a squeeze of lemon. If you don’t like batter, look out for  calamares a la plancha , ie. grilled (even better IMHO).

Chipirones (must-try!)

Baby squid battered and fried, these little critters make look disgusting but they might just be Barcelona Life’s favourite traditional tapa. Best drizzled with a squeeze of lemon and digested at a chiringuito (beach bar) somewhere on the Costa Brava.

Chorizo al vino (must-try!)

An editorial fave, and no wonder if you consider that a) Spanish cured sausage is the best in the world b) what could be better than adding a slosh of red wine?! In some parts of Spain you can also try  chorizo al sidra , or sausage cooked in cider!

Croquetas (must-try!)

restaurant tour barcelone

Ensaladilla rusa

‘Russian salad’ is a firm favourite in Spain, and typically one of the only tapas with a high vegetable count – so good for balancing all those meat dishes. Potatoes, eggs and mayonnaise are the main ingredients with beans, carrots and chopped gherkins common additions. (Not a personal fave if I’m being honest!).

Jamon Iberico (must-try!)

restaurant tour barcelone

Mejillones (must-try!)

restaurant tour barcelone

Morcilla (must-try!)

This dark, suspicious looking meat dish divides opinion… it’s the Spanish version of blood pudding. Sometimes its served on its own, other times with  patatas bravas , eggs or in stuffed peppers. Our verdict – it’s freaking delicious!

Pa amb tomaquet (must-try!)

restaurant tour barcelone

Patatas bravas (must-try!)

Chunks of potato chips served with spicy mayonnaise, this decidedly unhealthy snack is an essential side plate for any meal in Spain. Virtually every tapas restaurant in Barcelona serves their own take on them. The quality typically varies between ‘good’ and ‘unbelievably tasty!’

Pimientos del Padron

restaurant tour barcelone

Pulpo Gallego (must-try!)

Another dish hailing from Spain’s seafood capital, Galicia, pulpo gallego is boiled octopus seasoned with olive oil, salt and paprika. Usually one of the more expensive tapas on any given menu, few regret the extra few euros.

Not to be confused with Mexican tortilla, Spanish tortilla is not a thin flatbread but a fat omelette made with egg, potato and onion. It’s the type of dish that can vary from ordinary to heavenly – usually the latter if homemade by your Spanish friend’s mum.

There are plenty more delicious varieties of tapas served up in bars around Spain, and we’ll add even more munch-worthy morsels next time we update this page. (If you can’t wait check out  Wikipedia’s entry  for more common dishes).

We’ve mostly focused on the classics that you might find in any neighbourhood joint, but an increasing number of modern, hip and fancy places are adding their own creations to menus across the city… so our advice is just be adventurous! We’ve ordered some of the best dishes of our lives without having the foggiest clue what they were before they arrived on the table.

The 10 hottest restaurants in barcelona for summer 2024.

Barcelona has a food scene like none other. Home to some of the world’s most extravagant dining, including three three-star Michelin establishments and the world’s second-best restaurant according to The World’s 50 Best , the Catalan capital is also a surprisingly laid-back destination, brimming with casual tapas bars and natural wine joints.

Barcelona is a dining destination like none other.

This year, as the city prepares to welcome one of the world’s foremost sporting events, the America’s Cup, its restaurants are gearing up for what promises to be one of the busiest summers ever. Which, in turn, means reservations are likely to be harder than ever to come by. To plan ahead and make sure you don’t miss out, here is a cheat list of the hottest spots in Barcelona right now.

Hamachi crudo with sauce vierge is one of the highlights of the tasting menu at Âme.

Âme means soul in French and this spot will make yours sing. By the team behind the ever-popular Albé, Âme is a new concept that blends Catalan produce with French culinary tradition. Anyone who has been to the original address will be familiar with restaurateur Joey Attieh’s flair for hospitality and Chef Pachi Rodríguez’s considerable culinary talents. At Âme, they have switched things up another notch, with a tasting menu that encapsulates the panache of French gastronomy, without the snootiness. The result: local ingredients like rice from the Ebro Delta, prawns from Palamós, and seasonal mushrooms from Montseny, prepared using the sauces and techniques of Nouvelle Cuisine: buerre blanc, cassoulet, bouillabiasse to name just a few—all served in the deliciously romantic Âme dining room with its wooden tables and warm, friendly vibe.

Natural wine and sharing plates are what Tiberi Bar is all about.

It seems Barcelona can’t get enough of natural wine, and trendy Tiberi Bar in the laid-back Poble Sec district is the latest hotspot to get local natty lovers effervescent with delight. Having a good time is the name of the game at this cool bistro-bar with its green marble bar and industrial-chic decor. There are few better places to be a natural wine enthusiast than right here in Catalonia, one of Europe’s leading natty-producing regions and Tiberi does it right, offering a mix of funky and classic options to please all palettes. As for the food, it’s all about the seasonal sharing plates, like cripsy polenta topped with fried sage or the beautifully textured pumpkin served with creamy labneh and crunchy pumpkin seeds. Meanwhile the classic Gilda (a skewer adorned with olives, Guindilla pepper , and Cantabrian anchovies) gets a clever update with cheese and a quail’s egg added on.

Brasero Atlántico and Florería Atlántico are the latest hotspots to open in Barcelona's trendy El ... [+] Born district.

Florería Atlántico/Brasero Atlántico

Listed among the World’s 50 Best Bars, the original Florería Atlántico can be found in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with an innovative drinks menu that pays tribute to the Latin American country’s Indigenous communities. Now, you can visit its second outpost in Barcelona, a sultry basement cocktail bar combined with a breezy upstairs restaurant serving Argentinian fare with a Mediterranean twist. Stepping into the restaurant from the buzzy streets of trendy El Born, you will spot a beautiful flower arrangement—a nod to the "Florería" or flower-shop origins. The menu includes deliciously juicy cuts of grilled Argentine meat cooked with a tasty selection of garnishes, alongside Catalan specialties like local charcuteries or octopus confit in coconut oil, cinnamon and orange. Unsurprisingly, the wine and cocktail lists are rather excellent too.

The sushi and sashimi at Kintsugi as as fresh as it gets.

The Top 10 Richest People In The World (May 2024)

At the heart of the ai pc battle lies the npu, perfect storm sparks sudden bitcoin price crash under 60 000 as ethereum xrp and crypto brace for shock fed flip.

If there’s one thing Barcelona does almost as well as Catalan food it’s Japanese. Why? It turns out the two cuisines have quite a lot in common, from the fresh flavors, to the rice and seafood like shrimp, eel and bluefin tuna. In Catalonia, many of these fishy delicacies come from the Ebro Delta south of Barcelona, which is also where Kintsugi gets most of its produce. No surprise, then, that the omakase tasting menu here has quickly established itself among the best in the city. Although the dishes change daily, Mozambique-born sushi master Héctor Ribeiro’s top plates include the oysters served with tuna marrow, the mackerel marinated in ginger and Kombu seaweed and the toro tuna belly sashimi that literally melts in your mouth.

Público's show-stopping smoked brioche topped with steak tartare, quail eggs, mustard and ... [+] rosemary-infused olive oil

Brand-new from the people behind ever-popular Can Fisher, Público is a new wine bar concept in Barcelona’s busy Carrer d’Enric Granados. Serving more than 200 different wines by the bottle (starting at €22) and 35 by the glass, wine is sold at retail prices with a corkage fee of €8 added on. What that means in practice is that you can sample some of the finest vintages from Catalonia, Spain and further afield at a far more accessible price point than in other restaurants. As for the dining menu, it is all about the slow food. Think oysters marinated in cava and yuzu, or the show-stopping smoked brioche topped with steak tartare, quail eggs, mustard and rosemary-infused olive oil, all made using market-fresh, seasonal produce.

Red prawn with puffed pig's trotters and tree tomato, one of the "snacks" at Mae.

Few restaurants caused as much of a stir last year as Mae. Not surprising, considering the pedigrees of the two chefs behind it: Spanish chef Germán Espinosa, who previously helmed the superb kitchen at downtown Fonda España, and Colombian chef Diego Mondragón, formerly of three-star Michelin Àbac, Fonda España and two-times-best-restaurant-in-the-world El Celler de Can Roca. Mae serves thoughtful tasting menus using local produce and a mix of Catalan and Latin American flavors, resulting in delicate dishes that you will not find anywhere else. Like the tomatoes from nearby Maresme with Peruvian yellow chili, or ají amarillo, and almonds, or seabass cured in Kombu seaweed, infused with Colombian lulo citrus fruit and radish. Watch this space as Mae looks to be destined for greatness.

Oysters at XeiXa

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter may be the city’s most beautiful neighborhood but it is not known for its great restaurants. Newly opened XeiXa is the exception to that rule. Set in a historic building that can be accessed either from Carrer de Carabassa or Carrer d’Avinyó (the latter was once the entrance to a brothel, and the subject of Picasso’s painting The Young Ladies of Avignon, originally titled The Brothel of Avignon, referring not to the city in France but the street in Barcelona), the setting is as dreamy as it gets. And yet the real highlight here is the food, lovingly prepared by young Valencian chef Sara Valls, using hyper-local ingredients cooked on the grill or in the wood-fired oven. The smoked eggplant baba ganoush with kalamata olives and pine nuts is a must, as is the hearty stew of chick peas, octopus, black butifarra sausage and creamed potato.

The grilled cheese sandwich with Mallorcan sobrassada is a highlight of the food menu at Varmuteo.

When the team behind Japanese-Mediterranean fine-dining spot Alapar announced the opening of a new vermut spot, it got the city’s food lovers all hot and bothered. What has made Alapar such a hit with the locals is the friendly, laid-back vibe—that, and some serious culinary magic, of course. Now, they have taken all that warm fuzziness and poured it into their next project, Varmuteo. A play on the words, “bar” and “vermuteo” (going for vermut), Varmuteo invites you to do just that. It’s the kind of place where you will stop by for a quick drink that ends up turning into an all-nighter. Top dishes to accompany all the vermut (the menu features 20 different varieties) are the “matrimonio”, a cracker topped with a “marriage” of salted and fresh anchovy, and the grilled cheese sandwich with piquant Mallorcan sobrassada.

Take an old-man bar but make it sexy, Señora Dolores-style.

Señora Dolores

If you don’t think an old man bar can be sexy, think again. Like diners in the U.S., old man bars—affectionately known here as Bar Manolos—are enjoying a revival. So much so that some of the city’s new hotspots have adopted their esthetic. Nowhere more so than Señora Dolores, an achingly hip natural wine bar in trendy Sant Antoni named after Spanish anti-fascist Dolores Ibárruri, who adorns the “La Pasionaria” statue in Glasgow, a memorial to the Spanish Civil War. The modern-day Señora Dolores is a tribute to old-school Spanish bar culture, with a modern twist. Everything here is either cooked in a churro fryer or served raw (trust me, it tastes a lot better than it sounds!), including the churro-style patatas bravas and one of the hottest spins on steak tartare in town. The beautiful twenty- and thirty-somethings of Barcelona are here for it and so should you be.

Shrimp nigiris at Keanu Izakaya Bar

Keanu Izakaya Bar

Barcelona’s love affair with Japanese food is already well documented. In Japan, an izakaya is a restaurant and tavern where you can go for a drink, a bite to eat and a good time after work. Keanu is the Barcelona version of that. An upbeat, irreverent spot that serves Asian fusion dishes, with a focus on Japanese sushi and sashimi, at lunch and dinnertime, followed by banging DJ beats until the early hours. The nigiris are classic and excellent, regardless of what you go for—from the salmon to the tuna, hamachi, eel or Wagyu—and the same goes for the rolls. As for the hot dishes, the house special is the Tom Yum soup, a favorite with lovers of Asian food worldwide but less known in Spain. As for the name, it’s a homage to the one and only Keanu Reeves. Because, seriously, who doesn’t need a bit of Keanu to brighten their day?

Sommelier in Wine and Sparkling Wine Premium Tour. One of the best in Barcelona wine tasting.

25. Wine and Sparkling Wine Premium Tour

⭐ RATING: 4.7 out of 5 based on 7 reviews

So, you’re thinking of getting into the spirit of Barcelona’s wine culture? Well, the Wine and Sparkling Wine Premium Tour might just be your jam.

Get ready to explore two premium wineries and taste some of the finest wines Catalonia has to offer. And here’s the kicker: You’ll get to delve into the process of making both wine and the region’s famed sparkling wine.

Catalonia boasts a long wine tradition, with vineyards dating back over 2,000 years. And if numbers don’t lie, producing more than 380 million bottles annually speaks volumes.

Now, imagine tasting three wines from a winery built inside a cave. That’s right! This gravity-fed vinification process is pretty rad. Plus, pair those wines with some local cured meats, and you’re set for a treat.

The adventure doesn’t stop there. You’ll also be whisked away to Llopart, one of Catalonia’s most prestigious wineries.

Here, you’ll dive deep into the history of sparkling wine and catch some epic views of Montserrat. And to top it off, indulge in a tasting session of Llopart’s best sparkling wines accompanied by traditional cured meats.

This excursion offers a combo of nature’s beauty with a dash of spirituality and a generous pour of fine wine. Trust me – you won’t want to miss this.

First things first, you’ll be heading up to the serene Montserrat Monastery. Aside from its historical significance, it’s also home to the 12th-century Black Virgin icon.

The views up here? Simply unmatched. On weekdays, you might even get lucky and hear the ethereal voices of La Escolania de Montserrat (the Boy’s Choir).

And after soaking in the spiritual vibes of Montserrat, you’ll head down to Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, the heartland of Catalonia’s wine territory. Here, you’ll explore a winery’s extensive cellars and, of course, indulge in a tasting session.

I’m talking about sampling three distinct wines, giving you a true taste of the region.

Your experience begins in the Puig Room and takes you on a guided tour through the “Cava Cathedral.” This isn’t your average building – it’s a modernist structure and historical monument with walls that could tell stories of many vinous years.

Dive deeper into the legacy by visiting the museum and the main wine cellar where tales of Anna and the renowned Chardonnay grapes await.

To add a cherry on top, you’ll hop on a train ride that weaves through the cellar, making a pit stop at the “Anna Space”.

Here’s where things get tasty: you’ll be treated to three of Anna de Codorniu’s finest cavas, complemented with a light appetizer. Now, that’s how you wrap up a tour in style!

Tapas and Wine Walking Tour in Barcelona. One of the best in Barcelona wine tasting.

30. Tapas and Wine Walking Tour in Barcelona

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 based on 30+ reviews

⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4.5 hours

Last but certainly not least, the Tapas and Wine Walking Tour in Barcelona promises a gourmet experience like no other. Over 4.5 hours, you’ll be whisked through neighborhoods like Eixample, El Raval, the Gothic Quarter, and El Born.

Your taste buds are in for a ride, with an array of gourmet tapas awaiting at each stop, and of course, wine that’ll make you sigh in contentment.

You won’t just be eating and drinking, though. As you move between the tasting venues, your guide will share nuggets of information about Spain’s gastronomic culture, history, and the wine-making industry.

It’s a great way to learn about the city’s architecture and vibrant nightlife. The highlights include exploring the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, and El Born.

Does Barcelona have wineries?

Absolutely, Barcelona does boast wineries, even within the city’s proximity! While the city itself is a bustling metropolis, its surrounding regions are dotted with vineyards and wineries, making wine-tasting excursions quite accessible. So, yes, if you’re in the mood for some vino, Barcelona has got you covered.

Many of these nearby wineries offer tours that not only showcase their wines but also dive deep into the history and culture of winemaking in the region. It’s a wonderful way to blend (pun intended) sightseeing with sipping.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine aficionado or just curious about Catalan wine, these wineries often offer experiences tailored for every kind of traveler.

What wine towns are near Barcelona?

Several wine towns are sprinkled around Barcelona, offering a taste of Catalonia’s rich winemaking heritage. Penedès, Alella, and Priorat are among the most renowned ones. Each town is unique in its offerings, and trust me, they’re worth a visit if wine is on your mind.

Penedès is famous for its sparkling wine, cava, and is just a short train ride away. Alella, on the other hand, sits cozily along the coast and has been producing wines since Roman times.

Then there’s Priorat, known for its powerful red wines and dramatic landscapes. A visit to any of these towns is bound to give you a deeper appreciation of Catalonia’s wine culture.

How far is the wine region from Barcelona?

The primary wine regions around Barcelona are surprisingly close, with many just a short drive or train ride away. Penedès, one of the most popular, is roughly a 45-minute drive from the city. So, in less than an hour, you can transition from urban landscapes to sprawling vineyards.

The convenience of Barcelona’s location means you can easily plan day trips to these wine regions. And, of course, with day trips come the perks: guided tours, panoramic views of vineyards, and delightful wine-tasting sessions.

Whether you rent a car, take public transport, or opt for a guided tour, the wine treasures of Catalonia are comfortably within your reach.

Is Barcelona good for wine?

Definitely, Barcelona is exceptional for wine lovers! The city sits in Catalonia, a region renowned for its diverse wine culture and traditions. So, when in Barcelona, you’re not just getting city vibes but also a taste of some fine Catalan wines.

Barcelona’s advantage is its strategic location amidst several prominent wine-producing areas. This means you get the luxury of enjoying wines from varied terroirs without venturing too far.

From local wine bars to upscale restaurants, the city itself offers countless opportunities to explore the local flavors. Many establishments pride themselves on sourcing wines from local producers, giving patrons an authentic taste of the region.

So whether you’re looking for a rich red, a crisp white, or the famed bubbling cava, Barcelona’s wine scene won’t disappoint.

What wine is famous in Barcelona?

Cava, without a doubt, takes the crown as the most famous wine in Barcelona. It’s Catalonia’s answer to champagne and is a sparkling wine that’s won hearts globally. When in Barcelona, sipping on cava is almost a rite of passage.

Originating from the Penedès region, Cava is made primarily from three local grape varieties: Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada. Its effervescence and crisp taste make it a favorite for celebrations or just casual sips by the beach.

But Cava isn’t the only star here. Barcelona also showcases a range of reds and whites that come from its surrounding regions. Priorat, for instance, is known for its bold reds, while Alella brings in more mineral-driven whites.

This means that while cava might be the showstopper, there’s a diverse wine cast supporting the show, all waiting for you to take a sip!
