We Began Just Like You We Began Just Like You

Highway Weather was born of necessity.

It began in late 2012 with a simple problem: The app founder, Devan Stormont, was trying to visit family for the winter holidays. The drive was about 7 hours through "middle-of-nowhere" rural country with limited road and cell services. A series of rolling snowstorms were moving in a way that it wasn't clear whether the trip could be made without getting trapped in a storm. Existing apps and websites were not helpful in resolving the problem.

For the sake of safety, the trip was cancelled. Out of frustration, the first version of Highway Weather was created over the following weeks (and originally called Weather Route ).

At first, it was a hobby/personal app used to solve a personal problem and updates were made to fix personal annoyances. Over time, it became popularly adopted by many travelers and commercial users.

Since 2013, it's been our mission to ensure everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Today, we do that by providing you the best road trip weather planner app on the market.

Weather Channel’s road trip planner helps predict the forecast along your drive

Natt Garun

Road trips are one of the ultimate summer activities, but it takes a lot of planning especially if you aim to head across the country. While you can map out exactly where you’ll eat and stay and what to go see, plans can change if you come across unexpected weather. Instead of rolling with the punches, you can now attempt to make plan B if you get hit with bad weather by making use of a new The Weather Channel travel planner. In collaboration with Stamen Design, the road trip planner will show you the weather forecast for each stop you make along the drive to help you prepare or choose a new route entirely.

The road trip planner can be especially helpful if there are several different routes you can take from one city to another. “So let’s say you’re driving from New York to San Francisco, and you’re trying to decide whether to go straight across or loop up or down a bit,” the Stamen Design blog post  reads. “This will give you a sense for whether it’s going to be rainy or sunny when you plan to be in the middle of Nebraska.”

To get started, simply type in your starting and ending cities. Click the plus bubble to add stops and the app will generate the predicted weather of that general location. You can also go into the details of each city to note what day and time you plan to leave to get the most accurate forecast. However, since weather predictions are not made for more than a week at a time, things can be a bit limited in that regard.

While the map won’t tell you the best recommended route, it can help with knowing exactly what to bring on the trip. Still, like most weather forecasts, you can’t always expect the predictions to be entirely correct. But for a free app that provides a useful insight, we don’t see a reason not to use The Weather Channel travel planner. Unless, of course, you like the feeling of uncertainty or driving in a storm. After all, what’s a road trip without some spontaneous adventures?

At the moment, the app is currently only available for travel in the United States. Sample your own possible trip here .

Buying a video doorbell or a security camera are among the easiest ways of improving your home's security, and Ring is one of the most trusted names if you're planning to get either or both of these devices. If you're interested, there's an ongoing Ring sale on Amazon so that you wouldn't have to pay full price. The available Ring deals include standalone security gadgets and bundles, and you can get as much as 44% off their sticker prices, but only if you hurry because there's no telling how much time is remaining on these offers.

What to buy in Amazon's Ring sale Ring is a mainstay in our lists of the best video doorbells and best home security cameras because of the helpful features that they'll provide, including 24/7 live streaming through the Ring app, two-way audio to talk to visitors outside your front door or family members inside, customizable mobile alerts, and compatibility with smart home devices that are powered by Amazon's Alexa, among many others.

Smart homes are more popular than ever, with companies like Google, Amazon, Ring, Arlo, and other big brands churning out new products at regular intervals. Most people have heard of smart displays and smart light bulbs -- but smart blinds are yet to gain the same traction as these other categories.

However, smart blinds can become an integral part of any smart home. Along with giving you an easy way to manipulate your shades, they can help you save money by allowing (or limiting) light to enter your home and moderate its temperature.

Few robot vacuums and mops are as well-rounded as the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and Narwal Freo X Ultra. The two premium robots will vacuum and mop entirely on their own, before returning to their docks to automatically clean their mopheads and empty their dustbins. That sort of functionality doesn't come cheap, with both products carrying hefty price tags that'll put a big dent in your budget.

Because they're so expensive, you'll want to pay close attention to the differences between these two robot vacuums. Both are great additions to any household, but one might be a better fit for your needs than the other.

Best Weather App for Your Road Trip

As you are about to embark on your road trip, you’ll probably want to know what kind of weather you’ll encounter along your route.

Knowing the driving conditions in advance of your road trip will help you choose the safest route and give you peace of mind.

We realized the importance of this on a recent December road trip from Milwaukee, WI to Utah. Because we were traveling in the winter, we wanted to make sure we weren’t going to run into any snowstorms, especially in the mountainous regions.

It was not easy to find the information I needed using traditional weather apps like Accuweather or Dark Sky. With these apps, I had to think about when we would be in specific cities and then look up each forecast for that specific day and time. It was a pain.

But I then found exactly what I was looking for.

I found weather apps that can show you the weather forecast for each location at the time you are expected to pass through them. Wait, what????

These apps helped us pick the safest route and plan our departure time appropriately to avoid inclement weather conditions.

There are several weather apps for road trips out there for both iPhone and Android.

We tested out 3 apps that allow you to easily check the weather along your driving route to help you arrive safely at your destination.

OUR TOP PICK – Weather On The Way

Weather On The Way is a clean and easy-to-use weather app that displays the weather conditions along your route for the days and times you are expected to drive through.  It also gives you the option of selecting alternative routes (shown below with the grey line) if the weather isn’t looking the safest on the fastest route.

Screen shot of Weather on the Way App showing the weather forecast for a road trip from Milwaukee to Utah

This app shows you a snapshot of the weather along your road trip route as well as any weather alerts that would be in effect when you pass through. You can also view the radar to see any current precipitation and which way it’s headed.

Overall, we highly recommend this app. It has a user-friendly interface and the addition of weather alerts is worth the subscription fee.

Cost for Pro Version: $2.99/month or $16.99/year

  • Available in 70+ countries
  • Can test out Pro Version 5 times before purchasing
  • Ability to add planned stops song your route, along with the amount of time stopped, to ensure accurate weather prediction timing
  • Ability to adjust departure date (up to 7 days in advance)
  • Limited abilities with the free version.

Available on:  Apple

Drive Weather – An Acceptable Option

The Drive Weather app is also an easy-to-use app full of weather info that will help you get to your destination safely.

As with Weather On the Way, you can enter your destination and all of the stops along the way. The app then shows the weather forecast at the expected time you will get to each point on a trip.

Screen shot of Drive Weather App showing the temperature along a road trip route from Milwaukee to West Virginia

The app has an easy-to-read map with options to view the radar, temperature, wind speeds, and precipitation you may run into along the route. The interface is a little clunky, but still does the job it was intended to do.

Overall, this app has a lot of useful features if you’re willing to pay for the annual subscription of $9.99

  • Option to adjust travel speed for more accurate weather predictions
  • Free version has limited abilities

Available on: Android and Apple

Highway Weather – Best Free Option

Highway Weather will show you the weather along your route for the time you will be traveling through, however it’s a bit clunky .

The best part about this app is that it gives you quite a few features with the free version.

Screen shot of Highway Weather App showing weather timeline of road trip from Milwaukee, WI to Park City, UT

The app provides suggestions on the best time to leave and allows you to pick your mode of transportation such as car, small truck, or motorcycle as these affect your travel speed.

  • Easy to adjust the departure time up to 5 days in advance
  • Get a lot with the free version
  • Available outside of the US
  • Can’t change the order of stops once entered. You can reverse the order but can’t add stops or change the order of the stops
  • Ads clutter the interface and pop up ads disrupt the user experience

Wrapping Up

Using an app to check the weather along your travel route before and during your road trip will help you avoid stressful driving situations and get you to your destination safely.

Go ahead and download the app that you think may work best for you and give it a shot.

Preparing for the Weather

How to Plan for the Weather During Your Road Trip

road trip weather forecast planner

Cavan Images / Cavan / Getty Images

Weather plays a huge role in road tripping ; it can turn an immaculately planned-out vacation into a total nightmare if you're not careful. U.S. Department of Transportation data shows that weather events cause more than 1 million crashes, half a million injuries, and more than 6,000 deaths every year. During certain times of the year, wind, rain, hail, snow, and ice can send you into a ditch and put abrupt end to your trip. But there are several ways to prepare for inclement weather before getting behind the wheel.

Packing for Weather

No one wants to have to make a pit stop at the nearest Target because they forgot to bring a pair of sunnies or a sweatshirt when the weather takes a turn. There are a few items no road tripper should leave home without.

  • Polarized sunglasses : At times, the sun's rays can obstruct vision, so don't forget to bring your eye protection.
  • Ample socks and underwear : Wet socks and undies without a fresh change make for a poor traveling experience.
  • Waterproof jacket : You never know when a rain or snow cloud may come along.
  • Light jacket : Be sure to pack a hoodie, a light sweater, a cardigan, or something to keep you warm, even if it's the middle of summer.
  • An outfit you don't mind getting dirty : In the unfortunate case of a flat tire, you're going to wish you brought more than your nice vacation clothes to roll around on the ground in.
  • Emergency prep kit : Most importantly, get yourself an emergency kit to travel with. You can find ones containing first aid items, flares, and hazard markers in superstores like Walmart or Camping World. If you’re driving through nasty winter conditions, you’ll also need a season-specific emergency travel kit containing heavy coats, blankets, snacks, water, and other survival items in case you get stranded during a blizzard.

After you’ve packed the necessities, check the weather patterns and predictions for your road trip dates to decipher what else you might need to take. While it is important to pack light for long car rides, it's more important to not leave critical pieces behind.

Tuning Into Emergency Weather Information

The National Weather Service's Enhanced Data Display (EDD) app allows you to create a custom map and track future weather along a specific route. This service provides access to satellite imagery, real-time weather data, and forecasted hazards that may be applicable to your travels.

Otherwise, you can resort to more traditional methods, such as using a weather radio or tuning into local AM radio stations as you cruise from town to town. You can use the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ’s (NOAA) website to find the radio frequency for your location. NOAA frequencies can help you get accurate, real-time information that not all apps can provide.

Driving Through Heavy Winds

Heavy winds, even on a sunny day, are the bane of road trippers, especially RVers. It’s best to get broad-sided vehicles like large trucks and recreational vehicles off the road in the event of severe gusts. Wind at just 50 or 60 miles per hour can indeed blow you and your carload into a ditch. If high winds are in the forecast, consider sheltering in place until things calm down.

Dealing With Snow or Ice

Know your ride and know the road before you attempt to drive in winter weather. Rear-wheel drive vehicles can’t handle much ice at all and front-wheel drives are average when it comes to slick surfaces, but all-wheel and four-wheel drives are better equipped for it. When you encounter signs advising or requiring vehicles to have snow chains on the tires—oftentimes at higher elevation or in the far north—adhere to them and know how install them beforehand. If you anticipate icy weather, it would be wise to keep chains in the trunk of your car.

Top 10 Options for a Driving Weather Planner

Planning a road trip or long drive? It's important to check the weather conditions along your route to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. Below, you will find some of the best free and paid options for a driving weather planner to help you prepare for any weather-related challenges.

How to Find Weather on my Driving Route

To find weather on your driving route, there are several options available. Many state transportation departments offer online resources for checking road conditions and weather-related closures. You may also check the forecast for multiple locations along your route via a reputable resource such as the National Weather Service . Know that weather patterns can move in many different directions, so it would help to have a more than basic understanding of weather patterns so that you are not caught by surprise. Remember that you will need to check the forecasts for different periods at each location as you will hit them at different times in your drive. Be careful not to check too few locations, because a lot of weather can happen in between!

Another option is to use a weather app or website that allows you to input your starting point and destination, and provides a detailed weather forecast for each location along the way. Some GPS devices include real-time weather updates and alerts. Most of these apps are designed without meteorologist insights, so they miss a lot of crucial data. They often rely on a computer model to make the forecast when in reality there are dozens of computer models, all of which have pros and cons and are prone to errors at different times. These apps are usually foolproof but not failsafe. It is only recommended that these apps be used for shorter routes or if you are certain there will not be dangerous weather.

Your best and safest course of action is to consult with a professional meteorologist about the best time and route to drive. A full service consulting meteorologist will be able to provide the safest route, departure times, weather forecasts for the entire drive, specific waypoints, and recommend any necessary precautions. A fair service will charge barely more than a paid, premium app. A person will identify risks to travel that are not caught by a pre-programmed app or bot.

What if There is a Driving Advisory In My Area

If there is a driving advisory in your area, it’s important to take it seriously and adjust your travel plans accordingly. While most people consider the basic hazards like rain, snow and fog when planning travel, there are several weather related threats that are thought of less and sometimes even more dangerous.

Severe Weather : you could be driving into, or through an area at risk for severe weather. Even if the chances for steady or heavy rain are low, isolated thunderstorms that pop up on your route can quickly turn severe with gusty wind, hail or even tornadoes . A car is one of the most vulnerable places to be in any one of these hazards. Both wind and tornadoes can flip or roll a vehicle and its occupants while hail can shatter glass and pound anyone inside. All of these pose a threat for serious harm. While you may be familiar with weather watches that are issued just hours before these hazards may materialize, severe weather outlooks are also available that give a one-day, two-day, three-day, or even more advanced notice so that you can plan accordingly.

tornado damage to a car

Wind : Gusty winds can make driving extremely difficult for two primary reasons. First, the winds can make it hard to control a vehicle , especially a crosswind (coming from either side of the road). Higher profile vehicles like pickups, SUVs and 18-wheelers not only catch a higher wind further from the ground, but also have more surface area to take the force of the wind. The effects are magnified on elevated highways and bridges. Second, the wind can cause blowing dust and debris, dramatically reducing visibility. Dust storms , especially in the western United States can be just as dangerous to driving as rain, snow or fog. It is not uncommon for otherwise nice, sunny days to be quite windy. It may look nice to drive, but isn’t that safe. Wind advisories are often ignored, not even mentioned by some weather apps or broadcast outlets but should not be ignored by drivers.

Temperatures : You are probably wondering “how does temperature affect my car? I drive when it is hot and cold with no problem.” A mechanic can give better advice on how temperatures affect vehicles but a meteorologist will tell you both extremes are dangerous to drivers on road trips. Car trouble is unpredictable. It even happens to new cars sometimes, just the same as old junkers. Many long road trips go through vast stretches of desolate or scarcely populated parts of the country. Break down in a spot like this in extreme cold or extreme heat and if you are not stocked up, packed and prepared, you could be in the same amount of danger as if a tornado were barreling toward you.

road trip weather statistics

Even the obvious hazards like rain, snow and fog can set in quickly. There are certain weather patterns that an automated weather app will miss. Using a driving weather app that integrates such computer data could send you on a path straight into danger. You should check the weather forecast and road conditions frequently, preferably with a human meteorologist. Consider delaying your trip or finding an alternate route if conditions are unsafe. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to driving in hazardous weather conditions.

The Top 10 Options for a Driving Weather Planner

When it comes to finding the best driving weather planner, there are both free and paid options available. Some of the top choices include Weather Underground, AccuWeather, and The Weather Channel. These platforms offer detailed weather forecasts, road conditions, and even real-time traffic updates to help you plan your route and stay safe on the road. Consider your specific needs and budget when choosing the best option for you.

The following driving weather planner options are listed in order of appearance through Google search results as of May 2023. They ARE NOT ranked in order. The ARE in listed order of appearance in search rankings. The YourCast product review will accompany each so read on to see which products we do and do not recommend.

1. Morecast.com

Morecast is an Austrian based online weather service providing current weather conditions, radar and forecast information for point locations around the planet. There are also sections for weather news and a feed of weather pictures but neither has been updated in months, or in some cases, years. Since the conditions and forecasts are all computer automated, they are still functional. There is a “route weather” section that allows you to enter a start and end point as well as any additional stops. The site implies that you can select a future departure time but they are in one month increments making the application useless beyond present time. From there, Morecast plans your route. You can click on several points along the way that bring up an hourly forecast for those spots. Unfortunately, not every attempt to do this worked as the site appears to have a lot of pop-up ads and loading problems.

- Multiple waypoints

- “Best route” based on weather is not provided

- Dysfunctional adjusted start time function

- Website loading issues

- Not mobile friendly

- *Automated, prone to forecast errors and missed weather hazards

* See disclaimer at end of list

🗙 YourCast WOULD NOT recommend Morecast. You would be better off choosing your favorite route and looking at a national forecast map provided by the National Weather Service.

2. Navimeteo.info

This is not a good website. There are major functionality problems. Using the site almost makes you feel like your computer or mobile device is not working properly. We could barely get it to work to provide a review. There is actually no usable weather information. It is amazing that this still ranks on the first page since Google heavily penalizes poor website performance.

- Adjust leave time 1-7 days

- Major website loading issues

- Clunky map result that requires zooming and moving

- Clicking on maps points does not bring up weather conditions

- Minimal weather information provided

🗙 YourCast WOULD NOT recommend Navimeteo.info. You would be better off choosing your favorite route and looking at a national forecast map provided by the National Weather Service.

3. Drive Weather App

This is a solid option. It provides a quick weather forecast along your driving route for up to a week in advance. Weather conditions are provided at many locations along your route via the app interface. The forecast information provided adjusts to the time you are expected to reach each point on the route. You can adjust the departure time or route and check the forecast to determine the best time and locations to drive. Of course, this will require an understanding of basic weather concepts, watches, warnings and advisories to make that decision. Google maps also shows NWS watches/warnings on your route.

Cost: $11.99/year

- Adjust leave time

- Mobile App

- Can change route and times along the way

- Can send routes to Waze, Apple, or Google Maps

- Temperature

- Precipitation

- Alternate Route Selection

- Severe Weather Alerts

- Free version

- Free version doesn’t have every town

- User must determine own route

- *App creator is not a meteorologist

✅ YourCast WOULD recommend Drive Weather App.

4. Tripconditions.com

Like some of the previous options (Morecast, Navimeteo) this is a Application Programming Interface (API) based site that simply shows the weather on the default route between two locations. There is no weather forecast information. Only current conditions are provided which is useless for your road trip because, of course, the weather changes with time. There is no information provided about the site owners to check their meteorological credentials.

- Multiple point weather conditions

- Traffic hazards

- No weather forecast information

- No adjusted start time function

🗙 YourCast WOULD NOT recommend tripconditions.com. You would be better off choosing your favorite route and looking at a national forecast map provided by the National Weather Service.

5. Apps.apple.com

No review – list of app store search results

6. Weather.gov

No review – weather forecast information website

7. Weatherontheway.app

This is another good option. This mobile app provides a detailed weather forecast for your driving route. Thanks to combining forecasting and navigation, you get weather conditions precisely at a time you will be driving through. The app also offers the best time to leave for a given route or the option to select alternate routes to see if the waypoints offer better weather.

Cost: $4.99 monthly/$24.99 annually

- Plan For Stops

- Notifications While Driving

- Sunrise and Sunset Time to Avoid Glare

- *Forecast is computer generated, prone to errors and missed hazards

✅ YourCast WOULD recommend weatherontheway.app

8. Play.google.com

9. weather.com, 10. weatherroute.io/highway weather app.

The weather app, similar to competitors on this list, provides weather forecasts for the length of the road trip. You can view forecasts on a map view with a radar overlay to see what is going on near your route. Forecasts are tailored for the time period you are expected to hit each waypoint. Unlike the other mobile apps, weatherroute.io integrates live highway videos so you can see real life weather conditions, beyond radar. Users can drag a time slider to update departure time and see how changes affect expected weather. Finally, the app will suggest an ideal time to leave based on the weather forecast.

Cost: $1.99 monthly

- Cameras For Live Road Conditions

- No Ads (Paid)

- 7-Day Forecast

✅ YourCast WOULD recommend Highway Weather App

*DISCLAIMER

* While the best travel weather apps on this list are very high quality from a design and function standpoint, they do not have the added benefit of input from a certified and degreed meteorologist. Like any area of expertise, it is important to know that you are accepting guidance from somebody or something that does not specialize in this specific field. Sometimes, “bells and whistles” can mask flaws in information quality.

*Computer generated forecasts are freely available to anyone in the world. They are just one of dozens of tools that meteorologists use to assemble a forecast. All computer generated forecasts are designed to specialize in detecting certain patterns or types of weather. As a result, all computer models are prone to biases and errors which can dramatically compromise forecast accuracy. Computer models will not recognize real time changes in weather patterns the way a human meteorologist will in order to adjust for accuracy. In fact, most computer model forecasts only update every six to twelve hours. A human meteorologist will provide a real-time, up to date forecast with current information.

Introduction

Planning a road trip can be an exciting adventure, but it’s crucial to consider all factors that could affect your journey. One of the key factors to consider is the weather conditions along your route. Knowing the weather forecast can help you prepare for any potential challenges and make informed decisions about your travel plans. From sunny skies to heavy rainstorms or snowfall, each weather condition presents its own unique set of considerations. In this article, we will explore the importance of checking weather conditions before embarking on a road trip and provide valuable tips to help you stay safe and prepared.

Unpredictable weather conditions can have a significant impact on your road trip experience. Inclement weather can result in hazardous driving conditions, unexpected detours, or even lead to cancellations or delays. By staying updated with the latest weather information, you can anticipate potential challenges and make necessary adjustments to your travel itinerary. Whether you’re traveling through different states or exploring scenic routes, planning around weather conditions can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey.

Keeping an eye on the weather forecast also allows you to tailor your packing list accordingly. From warm clothing and rain gear to sunscreen and hats, being prepared for different types of weather will ensure you are comfortable throughout your trip. Moreover, being aware of the weather conditions can help you allocate your time and resources effectively. If you know that a storm is approaching, you may choose to spend an extra day in a particular location or reroute to avoid severe conditions.

In the following sections, we will discuss various sources that provide reliable weather information, including national weather service websites, weather apps and websites, as well as social media and local news channels. Additionally, we will delve into the factors you need to consider when planning based on weather conditions and the essential items you should pack for different weather scenarios. Lastly, we will provide valuable safety tips to navigate through different weather conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable road trip experience.

Why Checking Weather Conditions is Important for Road Trips

When embarking on a road trip, checking the weather conditions is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it allows you to anticipate and plan for any potential challenges that may arise along your route. Inclement weather can greatly affect road conditions, leading to hazardous driving conditions, road closures, or delays. By staying informed about the weather forecast, you can make informed decisions about when and where to travel, ensuring your safety and minimizing unexpected disruptions.

Secondly, checking the weather conditions helps you determine the most suitable routes to take. Certain weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snowfall, can make some roads impassable or dangerous to drive on. By knowing the weather forecast, you can adjust your route accordingly, choosing safer alternatives and avoiding any potential hazards that may arise.

Furthermore, being aware of the weather conditions allows you to plan your activities and sightseeing opportunities effectively. If you know that certain destinations are experiencing severe weather, such as thunderstorms, high winds, or extreme heat, you can decide to alter your plans and explore alternative options that are more favorable. This flexibility ensures that you make the most of your road trip experience and avoid disappointment.

In addition to safety and practical considerations, checking the weather conditions also helps you pack appropriately for your trip. If you are aware of the forecasted weather, you can pack the right clothing and accessories to ensure your comfort throughout the journey. Whether it’s packing sunscreen and hats for sunny days or bringing raincoats and umbrellas for expected showers, being prepared for the weather can make your road trip much more enjoyable.

Lastly, monitoring the weather forecasts allows you to stay informed about any unexpected weather events or alerts. Weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in certain regions prone to storms or other severe weather phenomena. By regularly checking the forecast, you can stay up to date with any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities and take appropriate actions to ensure your safety.

In summary, checking the weather conditions is crucial for a road trip as it helps you plan for potential challenges, choose suitable routes, adjust your activities, pack accordingly, and stay informed about any unexpected weather events. By staying prepared and knowledgeable about the weather, you can have a safer and more enjoyable road trip experience.

Sources to Find Weather Conditions

There are several reliable sources you can utilize to find accurate and up-to-date weather conditions for your road trip. These sources provide real-time information, forecasts, and other essential details that can assist you in making informed decisions about your travel plans. Here are some commonly used sources to consider:

  • National Weather Service Websites: The National Weather Service (NWS) operates various websites that provide comprehensive weather information. The main website, weather.gov, offers detailed forecasts, radar and satellite imagery, severe weather alerts, and climate data for specific locations. Additionally, the NWS websites for each state or region often provide more localized information and weather updates.
  • Weather Apps and Websites: There are numerous weather apps and websites available that offer weather forecasts and current conditions. Popular options include AccuWeather, The Weather Channel, Weather Underground, and Weather.com. These platforms provide user-friendly interfaces, interactive maps, hourly and daily forecasts, as well as extended outlooks to help you plan your road trip accordingly.
  • Social Media and Local News Channels: Many local news channels and meteorologists have active social media accounts where they frequently share weather updates and forecasts. Following these accounts can give you real-time information about weather conditions in specific areas along your route. Additionally, local news channels often provide weather updates during their broadcasts or on their websites, offering valuable insights into the current and upcoming weather patterns.

Each of these sources provides valuable information, and it’s recommended to use more than one to cross-reference the forecasts and get a comprehensive understanding of the weather conditions along your road trip route. By gathering data from multiple sources, you can have a more accurate assessment of the weather outlook and make well-informed decisions based on the consensus.

It’s essential to check the weather conditions regularly, especially as your travel dates approach, as weather forecasts can change. Keep in mind that weather information may not always be 100% accurate, so it’s important to be flexible and prepared for unexpected changes. With reliable and up-to-date weather information at your disposal, you can better prepare for any potential challenges and ensure a safer and more enjoyable road trip experience.

National Weather Service Websites

The National Weather Service (NWS) operates a network of websites that provide detailed and reliable weather information for various locations across the United States. These websites are a valuable resource for obtaining accurate forecasts, radar and satellite imagery, as well as severe weather alerts. Here are some key NWS websites to consider when checking weather conditions for your road trip:

1. weather.gov: The main NWS website, weather.gov, is a comprehensive resource for weather information. It allows you to search for specific locations and provides localized forecasts, current conditions, radar and satellite imagery, climate data, as well as links to official weather alerts. The website’s user-friendly interface and access to a wide range of meteorological data make it a go-to source for weather information.

2. Local NWS Websites: Each state or region typically has its dedicated NWS website that offers more localized weather information. These websites provide forecasts tailored to specific areas, allowing you to view weather conditions for cities, counties, or even specific landmarks along your road trip route. These localized forecasts can give you a better understanding of the weather patterns in the areas you plan to visit.

3. Specialized NWS Websites: The NWS also operates specialized websites that focus on specific weather phenomena or activities. For example, if you are planning a boating or beach vacation, you can visit websites like tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov or ripcurrents.noaa.gov to get information on tide times or beach safety. These specialized websites cater to specific weather-related needs and can provide valuable insights for your road trip planning.

When using NWS websites, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the terminology and symbols used for weather conditions. The websites often provide explanations and key information to help you understand the forecasts and alerts. Additionally, NWS websites are updated regularly, ensuring that you have access to the latest weather information for your chosen destinations.

By utilizing NWS websites, you can access reliable and official weather forecasts that are backed by a team of meteorologists. This can be particularly important when planning a road trip in areas where weather conditions can change rapidly, such as mountainous regions or coastal areas. With the comprehensive data provided by NWS websites, you can effectively plan your road trip, anticipate weather-related challenges, and ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

Weather Apps and Websites

These user-friendly platforms offer a range of features that can assist in planning your road trip and staying informed about weather conditions along your route. Here are some commonly used weather apps and websites:

1. AccuWeather: AccuWeather provides detailed forecasts, hourly and daily weather updates, radar and satellite imagery, and severe weather alerts. AccuWeather is available as both a mobile app and a website, offering convenient access to weather information wherever you are.

2. The Weather Channel: The Weather Channel app and website provide extensive weather information, including hourly and 10-day forecasts, radar maps, and in-depth weather videos. The app also offers features such as pollen and allergy forecasts, road trip planning tools, and severe weather alerts. With its comprehensive coverage and user-friendly interface, The Weather Channel is a popular choice among travelers.

3. Weather Underground: Weather Underground offers hyperlocal weather forecasts, interactive radar maps, and user-contributed weather reports. This platform provides valuable insights into current weather conditions from personal weather stations located around the world. Weather Underground also offers features like historical weather data and customizable widgets for quick access to weather information.

4. Weather.com: Weather.com, the official website of The Weather Channel, offers similar features to its app counterpart. It provides detailed forecasts, interactive radar maps, and weather news updates. The website also offers additional features such as travel guides, event planners, and outdoor activity recommendations based on weather conditions.

When using weather apps and websites, it’s important to take advantage of the available features to customize your experience. Many apps allow you to add multiple locations, set weather alerts for specific conditions, and access interactive radar maps for a visual representation of current weather patterns. Some apps even offer specialized sections for road trip planning, providing information on optimal travel times and weather-related considerations along your chosen route.

Weather apps and websites are valuable tools for staying updated on weather conditions during your road trip. They provide real-time forecasts, interactive maps, and important alerts to help you plan your journey and make informed decisions along the way. Whether you prefer using an app on your mobile device or accessing weather information through a website, these platforms offer convenience and accuracy, ensuring that you are well-prepared for any weather-related challenges during your road trip.

Social Media and Local News Channels

Social media platforms and local news channels are excellent sources for obtaining real-time weather updates and information during your road trip. These sources provide valuable insights into weather conditions, alerts, and forecasts specific to the regions you plan to visit. Here are some ways you can utilize social media and local news channels to stay informed about weather conditions:

1. Social Media Accounts: Many local news channels and meteorologists have active social media accounts on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. By following these accounts, you can receive instant weather updates, forecasts, and important alerts directly in your social media feed. Meteorologists often provide detailed explanations of weather patterns and offer valuable insights into the potential impact of the weather on your road trip. Local news websites also provide live-streaming of news broadcasts, which often include weather updates. Checking these websites can give you a more in-depth understanding of the weather conditions in the areas you plan to visit.

3. News Apps: Local news channels often have mobile apps that provide weather updates and alerts. These apps can be downloaded to your smartphone or tablet, allowing you to access weather information on the go. News apps offer features such as push notifications for important weather alerts, live streaming of weather broadcasts, and the ability to customize your location preferences for targeted updates.

When using social media and local news channels, it’s important to follow reputable sources and verified accounts to ensure accurate and reliable information. Local meteorologists and news channels with a strong history of providing dependable weather updates are often the best sources to rely on for localized weather information.

Additionally, engage with other travelers and locals in the areas you plan to visit. Social media platforms often have travel groups or forums where you can connect with fellow road trippers, who may share firsthand experiences and current weather conditions. Local residents may also provide valuable insights into weather patterns and offer advice on how to navigate through various weather conditions in their area.

By leveraging social media and local news channels, you can stay informed about current weather conditions, get real-time updates, and receive valuable insights from meteorologists and locals alike. This information will help you make informed decisions, adjust your itinerary if needed, and ensure a safe and pleasant road trip experience.

Planning Factors to Consider Based on Weather Conditions

When planning a road trip, it is essential to take into account the weather conditions along your route. Weather can significantly impact your travel experience, affecting road conditions, outdoor activities, and overall safety. Consider the following factors when planning your road trip based on the weather forecast:

1. Driving Route: Take note of any areas along your route that are prone to extreme weather conditions such as heavy snowfall, flooding, or high winds. Plan alternative routes or allow for extra travel time if necessary. Stay updated with road closures or advisories that may be in place due to weather-related issues, and adjust your itinerary accordingly.

2. Outdoor Activities: If your road trip involves outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, or sightseeing, consider the weather conditions that are ideal for these activities. For example, hiking in hot weather or during thunderstorms can be unsafe. Plan to engage in outdoor activities when the weather is more favorable, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience.

3. Sightseeing Opportunities: Some scenic drives or tourist attractions may be more enjoyable in specific weather conditions. For instance, driving along a coastal route during sunny weather can enhance the scenic beauty, while foggy or rainy weather may create a different atmosphere entirely. Take into account any weather-related factors that can enhance or detract from the experience of visiting particular destinations.

4. Accommodation Selection: Consider the availability of suitable accommodations based on the forecasted weather. Extreme weather conditions may affect camping options or limit outdoor facilities at certain accommodations. Plan ahead by booking accommodations that provide indoor amenities or have alternative options in case of unfavorable weather.

5. Packing Essentials: Pack clothing and gear appropriate for the expected weather conditions. Whether it’s sunscreen and hats for sunny days or raincoats and umbrellas for rainy weather, being prepared will ensure your comfort and enjoyment. Consider packing extra layers for variable climates and environments you may encounter along the way.

6. Flexibility in Itinerary: Keep in mind that weather conditions can change unexpectedly. Be prepared to adjust your itinerary or activities if needed. Stay updated with weather forecasts and local advisories to make informed decisions during your road trip. Flexibility will allow you to make the best of your trip while ensuring safety and comfort.

7. Safety Precautions: Finally, prioritize your safety by following safety guidelines and precautions recommended for specific weather conditions. This may include driving at a slower speed during heavy rain, avoiding areas prone to flash floods, or seeking shelter during thunderstorms. Stay informed about any weather-related warnings or alerts and take appropriate measures to ensure your safety at all times.

By considering these planning factors, you can optimize your road trip experience and mitigate any potential issues related to weather conditions. Being prepared and flexible will allow you to adapt to changing circumstances and make the most of your journey, ensuring a safe and memorable road trip.

By packing the right essentials, you can focus on enjoying your journey and handling any weather-related challenges that come your way.

Safety Tips for Driving in Various Weather Conditions

Driving in different weather conditions requires extra caution and preparation to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind when driving in various weather conditions:

1. Rainy Weather:

  • Reduce your speed and increase your following distance to allow for longer braking distances on slippery roads.
  • Keep your headlights on, even during the daytime, to improve visibility to other drivers.
  • Avoid using cruise control as it can make it more difficult to react quickly to changing road conditions.
  • Be aware of hydroplaning and maintain a consistent speed to minimize the risk. If your car starts to hydroplane, ease off the gas pedal and steer straight until you regain traction.
  • Ensure your windshield wipers are in good working condition and replace them if needed.

2. Snowy and Icy Conditions:

  • Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle, including windows, mirrors, and lights, before driving.
  • Drive at reduced speeds and avoid sudden braking or accelerating to prevent skidding.
  • Leave a larger following distance to allow for increased stopping time on slippery surfaces.
  • Use gentle and smooth movements when steering, braking, and accelerating.
  • If your vehicle starts to slide, steer in the direction of the skid to regain control.

3. Foggy Conditions:

  • Slow down and use low beam headlights or fog lights to improve visibility.
  • Avoid using high beam headlights as they can reflect off the fog and further reduce visibility.
  • Use windshield defoggers and wipers to keep your windshield clear.
  • Be aware of other drivers and listen for any sounds of approaching vehicles.
  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front to allow for sudden stops or maneuvers.

4. Hot and Sunny Weather:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially on long drives.
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, even if your vehicle has tinted windows.
  • Avoid leaving children or pets unattended in a hot vehicle.
  • Park your vehicle in shaded areas when possible to prevent overheating.
  • Consider using sunshades to reduce heat inside the car and protect your dashboard from sun damage.

5. Severe Weather Warnings:

  • Stay updated with weather forecasts and heed any severe weather warnings or advisories.
  • If severe weather is expected, consider delaying your trip or finding a safe place to wait it out.
  • Listen to local authorities and follow evacuation orders in case of severe weather emergencies.
  • Have emergency supplies in your vehicle, including a flashlight, food, water, blankets, and a first aid kit.
  • If visibility becomes significantly impaired or conditions become unsafe, find a safe place to pull over and wait for conditions to improve.

Remember, safety should always be the top priority when driving in different weather conditions. Adjust your driving behavior, stay alert, and be prepared for any weather-related challenges you may encounter during your road trip. By following these safety tips, you can have a safer and more enjoyable journey.

When planning a road trip, checking the weather conditions is a crucial step to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. By utilizing various sources such as national weather service websites, weather apps and websites, as well as social media and local news channels, you can stay updated with accurate and real-time weather information along your route.

Considering the weather conditions when planning your road trip allows you to anticipate potential challenges and make necessary adjustments to your itinerary. Factors such as driving routes, outdoor activities, sightseeing opportunities, and accommodation selection can all be influenced by the weather. Packing the right essentials for different weather scenarios ensures your comfort and preparedness throughout the trip.

Additionally, it is important to practice safety measures when driving in various weather conditions. Adhering to speed limits, increasing following distance, using proper headlights, and adjusting driving techniques for rain, snow, fog, or hot weather can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure your well-being on the road.

In conclusion, checking the weather conditions and planning accordingly is essential for a successful road trip. Being aware of the weather forecast, packing the right gear, and taking necessary safety precautions will ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Embrace the adventure, stay informed, and have a fantastic time exploring the open road!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

P lanning to travel up north for Easter? You may have to seek alternative routes or delay your travel as some northern Arizona freeways are closed due to heavy snowfall.

At about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, the Arizona Department of Transportation posted to X , formerly known as Twitter, that the Interstate 40 was closed in both directions between Winslow (Milepost 252) and Ash Fork (Milepost 145). In the same X post, ADOT said state Route 87 southbound is closed south of Winslow.

The I-40 has since reopened for travel.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Both closures were due to snowfall and no estimated reopening time was given for state Route 87.

Weather: Can a sudden change in weather make you sick? What your nose knows about it

The National Weather Service posted to X on Saturday to let drivers know of hazardous road conditions on Sunday, possibly heading into Monday morning and where snowfall will be the heaviest. NWS said Flagstaff could see 8-12 inches of snow.

If you get caught driving in snowy conditions, here's what you need to know.

Check the weather forecast and road conditions before getting on the road

Make sure to check the weather forecast and road conditions. This will help you determine whether driving is safe or if any roads are closed due to inclement weather. You can check the  Arizona Department of Transportation website  or call 511 for up-to-date information on road conditions.

Use winter tires or chains

Winter tires provide better traction on snow and ice compared to regular tires. If you live in an area like Flagstaff, which experiences frequent snow, it is recommended that you get a set of winter tires. Having tire chains in case you encounter snow or ice on the road is another safe investment.

Slow down and maintain a safe following distance

Snowy roads can be slippery, making it hard to stop or turn. To stay safe, it is essential to reduce your speed and maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. The end result will give you more time to react in case of a sudden stop or change in direction.

Avoid sudden movements and sudden braking

Sudden braking can cause your vehicle to skid or spin out of control on snow or ice. To avoid this,  ADOT recommends  making gradual and smooth movements when steering, accelerating and braking.

Know how to handle a skid

If your vehicle begins to skid, the most important thing to do is to remain calm and avoid making any sudden movements. To regain control, take your foot off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go.

Ratings and Reviews

Doesn’t tell us where they get their weather data.

Comparing the same route with other apps shows that their weather forecast is inconsistent. It would help to be transparent with where they get their data from to know if it’s accurate. Can’t find it anywhere in the app or the developer’s site. It’s concerning that the data does mot match other drive weather apps.

Developer Response ,

Hi, we get the data from multiple service providers (one of them being Climacell and the second being OpenWeather) to create a better forecast accuracy. As we give you a forecast at the time you arrive at your points, it might be different from other weather forecasts apps. Weather forecast points are snapped to the road layout, so even if you get the weather in any other app, it might not be the same point (coordinates) then in our application. The majority of apps in this category does not give an accurate map or does not request a weather forecast at the time of arrival, taking into account traffic and other weather conditions. In our app we do, that's why our app is being tested and trusted by a lot of truck drivers and motorcyclists who provided us with a lot of data on how to improve forecast accuracy in the first place. Hopefully this helps.

Something major wrong

I am in the three day trial. When I have told it to subscribe and I currently have a subscription, every time I try to touch a button to either reroute or do something the box still pops up that says that I have to do something with the subscription. I can’t test anything or even look at anything in the app because all it does is keep annoying me to get a subscription even though I already have the subscription. While it looks like a really nice app that I would like to try I cannot even get it to function. You developers really need to test your stuff there’s something really wrong and if you can’t get your stuff working then there’s no reason why a person should pay you.
Hi, we apologies for that. If you already have a subscription (or trial) you simply can restore your purchase in the app settings. Please go to the app settings (bottom right menu) and click restore your purchase - it should fix it for you. If restore is unsuccessful it might be because your trial is expired or you do not actually have a subscription. If you need a help please drop us a line on [email protected]. We will be able to assist you. Sorry for inconvenience.

Underwhelmed

I wanted to like this app. Unfortunately, I do not and am choosing another. The app sends you to ads for its paid version even when you are trying to use aspects listed as free. It is very slow to load the route forecast, even though I am on strong WiFi.
Thank you for your review. We are working on a new version which has support of new weather providers and will be working much more stable. It will have a lot of cool features for free.

News & features, winter center, why experts say to wear red and green during the solar eclipse.

Planning a trip to see April's total solar eclipse? Be sure to pack green and red clothes to see a strange phenomenon known as the Purkinje Effect.

By Brian Lada , AccuWeather meteorologist and staff writer

Published Mar 25, 2024 5:34 AM PDT | Updated Mar 25, 2024 5:40 AM PDT

Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Nicole Bajic explains the science behind the Purkinje Effect and how you can experience it during the solar eclipse.

The upcoming total solar eclipse will have some unusual effects on animals and the weather , but people who are in the path of totality may experience a strange effect with their vision and not because they use the wrong eclipse glasses.

"There's this thing that happens in the eye as we transition from day to nighttime called dark adaptation, but it takes about 20 to 30 minutes," Dr. Nicole Bajic, an ophthalmologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told AccuWeather's Tony Laubach.

The quick flip from day to night has an unusual reaction on eyesight, specifically with how we perceive colors. This is known as the Purkinje Effect .

"Reds appear [sic] kind of dark and then the, the greens and blues will pop in contrast," Dr. Bajic said.

road trip weather forecast planner

Reds and green will appear much differently during a total solar eclipse than any other day, as demonstrated by AccuWeather Meteorologist and Storm Chaser Tony Laubach. (AccuWeather)

Wearing a green or red shirt on the day of the eclipse could help people take notice of the Purkinje Effect. Additionally, having red and green objects nearby while watching the eclipse can also help folks take notice of the eclipse's side effect.

"If you have a lot of people around you, if you're, you're making this a group activity, you could have some people wear red, some people wear blues and greens," Dr. Bajic added.

The Purkinje Effect may also explain the viral debate from 2015 about a dress that to some appeared black and blue while others saw white and gold.

Additional reporting by AccuWeather Meteorologist and Storm Chaser Tony Laubach.

2024 Solar Eclipse: Top states traveling to Texas and driving risks to consider

Interest in traveling for the total solar eclipse led to the tracking of over 150,000 tweets from americans, by de'anthony taylor • published march 26, 2024 • updated on march 26, 2024 at 4:44 pm.

With the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, many Americans are gearing up to witness this rare celestial event.

The path of totality, where the total eclipse will be visible, stretches across a narrow line, prompting travelers to make plans to witness this extraordinary phenomenon.

However, as excitement builds for the eclipse, concerns about potential driving hazards and safety measures have also emerged.

A recent analysis of geotagged Twitter data revealed intriguing insights into the travel trends surrounding the upcoming eclipse. Based on over 150,000 tweets tracked by Diono , western states showed the highest interest in traveling to witness the total solar eclipse .

Meanwhile, states in the path of totality are expected to experience a surge in tourism. Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, and New Mexico are among the top 10 states where travelers can see the eclipse.

Moreover, the analysis highlighted the top cities where travelers are headed, with Dallas , Austin, and Indianapolis among the most popular destinations. Eclipse tourism is set to impact various regions across the country, coinciding with spring break plans and generating significant travel activity.

Top Cities Where Travelers Are Headed For Solar Eclipse

  • Indianapolis
  • Burlington, Vt.
  • Erie, Penn.
  • Little Rock, Ark.
  • San Antonio
  • Buffalo, N.Y.
  • Dayton, Ohio

In addition to the anticipated influx of eclipse tourists, concerns about driving safety during the event have been raised. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality and Injury Reporting System provided valuable insights into driving fatalities per million registered drivers during the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

The analysis indicated a cluster of states in the Northwest and Nebraska as particularly dangerous for driving during the 2017 eclipse. Furthermore, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas were among the top 10 states with the most dangerous driving conditions on that day.

  • Idaho - 0.17
  • Texas - 0.15
  • Colorado - 0.14

This data serves as a crucial reminder of the potential hazards of increased traffic and tourism during the upcoming eclipse. Highlighting the significance of safety measures and preparedness, the analysis underscored the need for comprehensive planning to mitigate the eclipse's impact on road safety.

As states in the path of totality brace for a substantial influx of tourists and heightened travel activity, ensuring road safety will be paramount.

With eclipse-related travel and the actual event, authorities, travelers, and local communities must proactively address potential traffic challenges.
