Meet the crew behind Roger Waters: This Is Not A Drill Tour

Roger Waters’ latest in-the-round production provides audiences with an unforgettable sonic and scenic experience…

The technical ingenuity of Roger Waters’ latest campaign has perhaps been shrouded by the very thing that has shaped the narrative of his artistic output over the past six decades – politics. With no fears of alienating the room, This Is Not A Drill Tour boldly opens with the public service announcement: “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.” For those who stick around, the reward is a spectacle over five years in the making – an in-the-round production that pushes the envelope of storytelling, boasting 650 sq m of LED, surround sound, a floating tunnel of triangular laser beams, as well as a giant inflatable pig and a ‘tumbling sheep’.

Greeting TPi at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome was Production Director, Chris Kansy, who gave a rundown of the tour’s suppliers, including: Beat the Street, Clair Global, Eat Your Heart Out, Guardian Barrier Services, Kinetic Lights, Major Tom, Nimbus Dirigibles, Road Ramps, Smoking Boots, Strictly FX, TAIT, Transam Trucking, Universal Pixels, and Upstaging.

Roger Waters

Before Roger Waters even took the stage Wednesday (Aug. 31) night for the second Madison Square Garden show on his This Is Not a Drill tour, the British rocker’s genial yet prickly voice issued forth a pre-recorded warning from the speakers: “If you’re one of those, ‘I like Pink Floyd but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to f–k off to the bar night now,” he said with a laugh.

Roger Waters

It was a fair warning, as the 78-year-old legend’s current tour – rescheduled from 2020 due to the pandemic – is as heavy on no-holds-barred political commentary as it is on music from the influential psych-rock band that made him famous. And there’s certainly no shortage of Floyd songs (which account for more than half of his setlist) over the course of his generous two-act show involving harrowing dystopian visuals, remote-controlled floating animals and a ton of smoke. (Well, the smoke wasn’t so much from Waters’ 140-person crew as it was the gray-headed fans who sparked up the moment he began singing “Another Brick in the Wall” near the top of the show.)

Taylor Swift Is Back on the Road: Here's How to Get Tickets to The Eras Tour in Sweden, Portugal…

If there were any “shut up and sing” types in the audience that night, they were either strangely silent or took his advice about f–king off to the bar. The crowd’s response was either supportive or respectfully neutral to images branding everyone from Ronald Reagan to sitting President Biden a “war criminal.” There were claps, and even tears, when he ran footage of police officers mercilessly beating unarmed, nonviolent civilians along with the names of murder victims from George Floyd in Minneapolis to journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Palestine. All of that went down during a driving, funky take on “The Powers That Be” from his 1987 solo album Radio K.A.O.S. , which sounds pretty dated if you’re listening to the studio version (the MOR ’80s rock production is strong on that one) but boasts a weightier urgency when delivered by his current touring band.

Trending on Billboard

Waters deserves credit for forcing 20,000 nostalgia-seeking Floyd fans to face uncomfortable realities that most concerts serve as an escape from. He reminded everyone that MSG (and all of New York City) sits on land stolen from the Munsee-Lenape people centuries ago. And during a thumping version of “Run Like Hell” that segued into an acoustic “Déjà Vu” from his most recent solo effort, Is This the Life We Really Want?, he made us Americans confront the bone-chillingly blasé footage of U.S. troops gunning down two Reuters journalists in a peaceful public space after they mistook cameras for weapons back in 2007. (After Chelsea Manning’s decision to leak the footage caused a reckoning three years later, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command said, “We regret the loss of innocent life,” although no one was ever punished for the deaths. A “Free Julian Assange” message accompanied the footage).

Significantly less laudable, however, are Waters’ ongoing comments on the war in Ukraine, which he doubled down on Wednesday night. Fresh off a euphoric, laser-laden performance of the entire second side of The Dark Side of the Moon , Waters chided the U.S. and NATO for not ending the war in Ukraine. “What we are doing, poking sticks in Russian bears, is completely insane,” he offered, while seated at a piano toward the end of the show.

The audience, at that point, was either too hypnotized by the music or stoned off second-hand smoke to do much other than exchange quizzical glances, wondering if they’d heard him correctly; presumably, not everyone in attendance was familiar with Waters’ recent comments on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where he has faulted both Biden and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for insufficient negotiations with Russia, which many have seen as a victim-blaming stance, considering that Russia was the invading aggressor. He’s also insisted Russia was pushed into this war, saying , “This war is basically about the action and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border,” a line of logic not too dissimilar from someone trying to say Nazi Germany was pushed to invade Poland because of stiff reparations imposed on the country after World War I — as if explaining the cause of a hostile invasion somehow frees the invading country of moral responsibility.

The muted response to his cringe-worthy Ukraine comments could also have simply been a result of the crowd giving him a pass, considering how astonishing This Is Not a Drill looks and sounds; it’s an arresting spectacle complemented by an equally immersive sonic experience that manages to be loud as hell without veering into head-splitting levels that have you reaching for earplugs. And when that inflatable sheep made the rounds above the heads of fans during, naturally, “Sheep,” the visible delight on everyone’s face was as life-affirming as the darker imagery was depressing. (Plus, there’s a delicious irony in watching hundreds of people reflexively pull out their cell phones the moment a giant sheep appears above their heads.)

All in all, Waters’ This Is Not a Drill tour serves as a reminder of two important truths: His visual and musical art remains as vital, timely and invigorating as ever, and if someone talks politics at you for two hours, they’re eventually going to say something that does indeed find you wishing you were at the bar instead.

Roger Waters Details ‘Spectacular’ ‘Us + Them’ Tour

  • By Kory Grow

Four years after concluding his massive The Wall trek, Roger Waters will stage another Homeric North American tour beginning next summer. The set list for what he’s dubbed the Us + Them tour will focus heavily on material he recorded with Pink Floyd alongside new songs and past solo works. The singer is promising a show with brilliant visuals and quad sound.

“We are going to take a new show on the road, the content is very secret,” Waters said in a statement. “It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75 percent of it will be old material and 25 percent will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It’ll be spectacular like all my shows have been.”

The tour will kick off in Kansas City on May 26th and work its way to both coasts of North America and Canada. Waters will also be offering VIP packages and presales (with the exception of Canadian dates) beginning on October 17th. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on October 21st.

Waters’ announcement comes on the heels of the first weekend of Desert Trip , a festival on the grounds where Coachella is held that featured sets by the Pink Floyd founder, the Who, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Waters used his staging and part of his set to criticize Donald Trump, displaying an image of the Republican presidential nominee juxtaposed with the words “ignorant,” “lying,” “racist” and “sexist” during Animals’ “Pigs (Three Different Ones).” “We don’t want a wall that separates us from our sister, our mother earth or from each other,” Waters told the crowd . He and all of the artists will be performing again this weekend for a second round of Desert Trip.

Roger Waters Kicks Off 'This Is Not A Drill' Tour With Exciting New Tricks

By Rebekah Gonzalez

July 7, 2022

roger waters tour personnel

Roger Waters officially kicked off his "This Is Not A Drill Tour" in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, July 6th and fans were able to catch some of the action during iHeartRadio Opening Night Live with Roger Waters.

In addition to letting fans tune into opening night via iHeartRadio's Classic Rock Channel, the former Pink Floyd bassist also gave an exclusive interview with Jim Kerr that covered everything from what people can expect from the exciting new show, how he and his band spent the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, to what he hopes to accomplish with the "This Is Not A Drill Tour." Waters has previoulsy described the tour as "a groundbreaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza performed in the round, it is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to LOVE, PROTECT and SHARE our precious and precarious planet home."

The storied musician gave fans who weren't in attendance on opening night a bit of a visual aid for the stage that will be completely surrounded by the audience. "...the central motif in the middle of the arena is a crucifix-shaped stage except it's symmetrical. On this stage, there is a monolith of LED screens built in the shape of a three-dimensional cross," he explained. "[Our team has] spent the last couple of years working on the content of the images and the words and the message and the love that will appear upon that monolith during the couple of hours or so that we're on stage."

WOW! 🎥: KATE IZOR pic.twitter.com/N6deVJMpZW — Roger Waters (@rogerwaters) July 5, 2022

When asked what songs from which eras will be included in the tour's setlist, Waters explained it would be a mix of solo music and many classic tracks from his time with Pink Floyd. However, Waters revealed having to compromise with people "constantly trying to put my thumb harder and harder on the Pink Floyd button. And I'm constantly trying to move my thumb off of the Pink Floyd button onto the [a message of] this is how I feel about my brothers and sisters all over the world." However, he knows that Pink Floyd's music means a lot to people. "My bosses are those people sitting out there in the seats. They don't always agree with everything I have to say but they're in the arena because they know what my work is and they like it. And to some extent, they're in consort with it and that we agree on a number of things, and in consequence, there is a lot of love in the room," he said. "It's them who I'm working for. I'm under no illusions about that."

He assured Kerr the setlist will include tracks from Pink Floyd's "Golden era," and specifically mentioned the song "Two Suns In The Sunset" from the group's 1983 album The Final Cut playing "a big role" in the show. Fans tuning in on Wednesday night were treated to a few of the classics including "Wish You Were Here," "Have a Cigar," and the legendary "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

COME DOWN FOR THE FIRST SHOW TONIGHT! CANNOT WAIT FOR PITTSBURGH! @PPGPaintsArena 🎥: KATE IZOR pic.twitter.com/5U8e9Mdksx — Roger Waters (@rogerwaters) July 6, 2022

Fans who make it out to the tour will also get to hear tracks from Waters' solo career as well as never-before-heard music from him and his band. "There's one very long song that I wrote during the Covid lockdown. Some of your listeners may not [know], during the two years of the Covid lockdown we made, my band and I, made new versions of a number of songs. And the beginning of the process was doing songs that we had done during the Us and Them Tour as encores. So we started with "Mother" but we went on and on. And they're beautiful recordings. I really like them." He even revealed that he has, "no doubt that it will be an album at some point."

After talking about a brand new 14-minute-long song called "The Bar," which will be sprinkled in throughout the show, Kerr mentioned the sense of community that he feels when hanging out at bars. The comment prompted a full-circle moment for the always poetic Waters, reminding him of the 3D cross monolith at the center of his stage. "If my show encourages us all to nurture that feeling, our desire to feel that sense of community, across the borders created by politics then I will have done my job on this tour," he said. "Because that is the most important thing I will ever have done in my life. Is to nail my heart and my colors to that cross."

Rogers Waters: This Is Not A Drill Live: In The Round will travel across North America and conclude in October in Dallas, Texas. For tickets and more information, click here .

Roger Waters Opens ‘This Is Not A Drill’ Tour In Pittsburgh [Audio/Videos]

After two years of pandemic delays,  Roger Waters  launched his long-awaited  This Is Not A Drill  tour in Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday. The concert from the founding  Pink Floyd  bassist at  PPG Paints Arena  featured a healthy dose of classic rock staples, solo compositions, and a pair of new songs written during lockdown.

Waters has never been one to hold his tongue about anything, be it his former bandmate  David Gilmour  or former President  Donald Trump . The songwriter made sure everyone was on the same page by welcoming audiences with the message “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now,” broadcast across the PA and on LED screens.

The stage set up for  This Is Not A Drill  features Waters and his band—comprised of Jonathan Wilson  (guitar),  Robert Walter  (keyboards),  Jon Carin  (keyboards),  Joey Waronker  (drums),  Gus Seyffert  (bass),  Seamus Blake  (saxophone) and  Dave Kilminster (guitar) in addition to backing vocalists Amanda Belair and Shanay Johnson —performing in the round for the first time. The band was stationed in the center of a giant cross, with catwalks going out in all four directions. Above the group hung a similar cross-section of LED screens which displayed Pink Floyd iconography, political messaging, and more imagery throughout the 23-song performance.

The first set sandwiched beloved Pink Floyd staples “Comfortably Numb”, “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Have A Cigar”, and more between Waters’ solo works including “The Powers That Be”, which he busted out for the first time since 1999 last week at a private, invite-only dress rehearsal at Bryce Jordan Center  in University Park, PA. It was also there that he debuted the new composition “The Bar”, which Waters performed on Wednesday for the first time in front of a ticketed audience.

During the second frame, Waters offered yet another public debut with “Is This the Life We Really Want?”, which was also first performed at the dress rehearsal. The crowd was then rewarded with the entire B-side of The Dark Side Of The Moon , with  The Final Cut ‘s “Two Suns in the Sunset” following before a reprise of “The Bar” and finally “Outside the Wall” to close the show.

Check out fan-shot videos from Roger Waters in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, as well as a radio broadcast of “Have a Cigar”, “Wish You Were Here”, and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 6-9)”. The tour continues on Friday in Toronto, ON.

Roger Waters Debuts “The Bar” at This Is Not A Drill Tour Kick-Off in Pittsburgh

Roger Waters Debuts “The Bar” at This Is Not A Drill Tour Kick-Off in Pittsburgh

Last night, Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters kicked off his This Is Not A Drill Tour at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Rogers and his backing band tossed out a stockpile of Pink Floyd favorites, cuts from his solo work and debuted a new track titled “The Bar.”

Rogers and his crew–comprised of Waters, Robert Walter (keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar),  Seamus Blake (saxophone), Joey Waronker (drums), Gus Seyffert (bass), and Dave Kilminster (guitar), Amanda Belair (backing vocals) and Shanay Johnson (backing vocals)– shared 23-songs for the much-anticipated tour kick-off which was originally scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Waters production team addressed the current and controversial views towards Waters by sharing a written message on screens ahead of the performance that read, “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.”

Waters opened the show with an acoustic rendition of “Comfortably Numb” and continued with Pink Floyd covers “The Happiest Days Of Our Lives,” “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2” and “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 3.” He followed with some of his solo work, playing “The Powers That Be” and “The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range.” After the electricity was clearly bouncing off the walls, Waters took a seat at the piano to formally welcome guests to the show, before sharing the debut of his song “The Bar.” He closed the first set of the evening with some of Pink Floyd’s most beloved songs, including “Have A Cigar,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)” and “Sheep.”

Rogers and company started the second set with a coupling off The Wall “In The Flesh” and “Run Like Hell.” He followed with his only songs of the evening from his 2017 LP Is This The Life We Really Want? “Déjà Vu,” followed with the project’s title track. Next came the bells of The Dark Side Of The Moon ‘s “Money,” on which Wilson handled lead vocals. They continued to play Side B of the 1973 album with “Us And Them,” “Any Colour You Like,” “Brain Damage,” and “Eclipse.” They followed the standout arrangement with “Two Suns In The Sunset,” which was followed by a reprise of “The Bar” before closing the show with “Outside The Wall.”

Rogers and company will continue the This Is Not A Drill Tour with a two-night run at the complete performance of  The Dark Side Of The Moon’s  second side was followed by  The Final Cut  standout “Two Suns In The Sunset.” Roger Waters capped the tour opener with a reprise of “The Bar” and “Outside The Wall.” The This Is Not A Drill Tour continues on Friday and Saturday at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

roger waters tour personnel

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

roger waters tour personnel

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

roger waters tour personnel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

roger waters tour personnel

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

roger waters tour personnel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

roger waters tour personnel

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

roger waters tour personnel

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
