8 of the best campsites in the cederberg.
Somewhere within the rugged wilderness that embraces the Cederberg ranges – and probably at the very end of a juddery gravel road – is your ultimate Cederberg campsite. Jacques Marais takes a backroad to find them.
Rondeberg Resort has camping right on the edge of the Bulshoek Dam, which is popular for watersports.
This may be one of the reasons why the Cape outdoor crowd visits this extraterrestrial land so often. One can wander contentedly – away from the crush of traffic and the bustle of business – while gawking at a horizon spiked by dramatic peaks rearing up to clash against the blue bowl of sky. Over the millennia, elemental forces and extreme temperatures have forged a land of absolutes, and back-road explorers are sure to be blown away by the grandeur of this rugged region. Did I hear anyone shout ‘road trip’ just then?
Gnarly gravel roads, winding mountain passes, dry-gulch river crossings which may flood at the first sniff of a thunderstorm… even though the Cederberg area is accessible in many places with a sedan, it makes more sense to face off against terra firma in a good-quality SUV at the very least, and preferably in a 4×4 vehicle.
So, trip on to the N7, crank up some music and head north through the cuttings of Piekenierskloof towards Citrusdal. Between here and Vanrhynsdorp, you will start noticing a bunch of dirt roads slip-sliding to your right. Along these bumpy routes, you will discover hidden oases, some of the highest vineyards in the country, San rock paintings, historic mission villages where leather veldskoene are still made by hand, snow protea and other rare fynbos species, endangered Cape mountain leopard, and a thousand travel secrets mere mortals will never get to experience.
And the best way to do this, you may ask? Pitch a tent! Spectacular camping sites dot the Cederberg ranges, and we’ve highlighted a selection to cover as broad a range of options as possible. From mild to wild, from really remote to relatively accessible, upmarket to affordable… and now, all you have to do is pitch up.
1. Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve
Directions: Your best route is via Ceres, from where you follow the R303 to Op Die Berg (30 kilometres from Ceres) and turn right at the Kagga Kamma sign on a good gravel road up Katbakkies Pass, looking out for a signboard to your left. You will reach the entrance after 15 kilometres and reception after a further four kilometres. GPS coordinates: S32º 44.757′ E19º 33.783′ Cost: Main lodge camping from R60 per person and R180 per vehicle; wild camping from R45 per person and R180 per vehicle (no electrical hook-ups). Contact: Tel 0230040077, kaggakamma.co.za
The San rock art at Kagga Kamma is exceptional and extremely well-preserved.
The 15000-hectare reserve is a premium establishment (part of the RCI Group) and primarily caters to a combination of well-heeled local and international travellers. One of its best-kept secrets, however, is its spectacular campsites. These superb getaway spots (including true wilderness camping along the 4×4 route) make this spectacular reserve accessible to a much wider range of tourists. The main camping area – less than a kilometre from the lodge, and with sites set in a semi-circle around a natural rock outcrop – is adjacent to the resort swimming pool, and luxury camping does not get any better than this. Peak season may be a bit busy, but for much of the year it will be just you on the fynbos plains, watched over by a billion stars.
Keep in mind that this is essentially wild camping (there are no basic facilities such as electricity, and water must be transported from the main lodge). The dramatic location and aquamarine pool more than make up for any ‘hardships’, though. One thing you are sure to sense is the earthy spirituality experienced by hundreds of generations of San who once roamed here.
Things to do at Kagga Kamma
On your feet: Hit the self-guided trails to experience the magic of this wilderness. There are three routes to choose from – four, seven and nine kilometres. The shortest is the most scenic.
In the saddle: Mountain bikers can crank a 30-kilometre-plus network of routes within the reserve. Both the 10-kilometre red and 30-kilometre black trails start from reception, initially along a short stretch of Jeep track before you venture on to the quad bike trail. The terrain is sandy in places, but flat enough to suit average riders. Expect to spend two to three hours in the saddle.
Behind the wheel: You can explore Kagga Kamma in your own off-road vehicle along a 100-kilometre 4×4 route. Take in the magnificent views as you navigate rivers or rugged ascents and encounter wildlife such as eland, bontebok and lynx.
2. Nuwerust Rest Camp
Directions: Make your way to Ceres and then follow the R303 to Op Die Berg for 30 kilometres. About 200 metres past Op Die Berg, turn right at the Cederberg/Ceres Karoo sign and follow the tar road for another 18 kilometres until it turns to gravel; you will reach the Nuwerust turn-off to your right 45 kilometres later. GPS coordinates: S32º 33.702′ E19º 22.685′ Cost: R200 per site (maximum four). Of the total 42 sites, only five do not have electricity. Wild camping only upon request. Contact: Tel 0274822813, cederbergexperience.co.za
The best sites at Nuwerust are in the shade of ancient oaks.
Expansive sites, a well-appointed boma (with DStv for the rugby, nogal), good ablutions and mountain views score huge points. The river (with some lekker swimming pools) is but a stroll away, while a large farm dam will help beat the heat on hot summer days.
Things to do at Nuwerust Rest Camp
On your feet: The breathtaking 12-kilometre Rooiberg Trail will take you straight up into cloud country, the six-kilometre Waterfall Trail hugs the rugged river course and the two-kilometre Rondekoppie Trail is a gentle stroll. Superb San rock paintings can be seen on the Dassieklippe section once you’ve summited Rooiberg; this is quite a hike, though, and a winner for tough trail runners.
In the saddle: Nuwerust plays host to a section of the Ride The Rock MTB race, with two purpose-built single-track loops running through the farm.
Casting a line: The Breekrans River and its tributaries have perennial pools populated by small-mouth bass as well as Clanwilliam yellowfish, so pack your spinning rods.
3. Rondeberg Resort
Directions: Head up the N7 to Clanwilliam and continue for 22 kilometres until you see a sign for Rondeberg on the right. GPS coordinates: S32º 0.050′ E18º 46.693′ Cost: From R180 per site (maximum six). All 21 sites have electricity. No wild camping. Contact: Tel 0274821487, rondeberg.com
Fishing at Bulshoek Dam.
Things to do at Rondeberg Resort
On your feet: The seven-kilometre Rondeberg Nature Reserve Hiking Trail contours around the ridge above the resort. First climb about three-quarters of the summit, then rock-hop all the way around until you can see the dam wall below you again (expect to take around three hours to do the circuit).
Behind the wheel: If you’re keen on a scenic day drive, go to Lambert’s Bay for a dose of West Coast culture and delectable crayfish. Otherwise head inland on the Algeria road for wine tasting at Cederberg Wines.
On the water: Bulshoek Dam is brilliant for boating and skiing. Paddling or swimming is allowed in designated areas, generally within 20 metres from the shoreline.
Casting a line: You can fish just about from your front stoep. The dam brims with large-mouth bass and there’s a solid population of small-mouth bass as well. Other species include kurper, carp and yellowfish, making for great spinning and fly-fishing, too.

What I Believe…
I believe in taking a company on the road to live for extended periods over the last 12 years to places most people only vacation.
From San Francisco to Hermosa Beach to Amsterdam, Portlandia, Guadalajara and back to Los Angeles (with some African safaris, Moscow mule'ing in Moscow, Japanese alpine climbing and off-road Great Wall trekking in between), I believe deeply in nurturing our wanderlust.
I believe in no apologies for being bold and living a self-approved life and building a self-approved business.
I believe each woman possesses a surprise factor that increases her magnetism. I believe the job of the “branding process” is to uncover and express the unexpected about you, your story, talents and what you offer so generously in the way only you can.
I believe that being consistently in alignment in what we do, say and show not only increases the trust others have in us but blows the doors off our own happiness.
I believe in the power of repeating fruitful mantras (and momtras ).
I believe in not allowing “how?” to cloud every YES gurgling inside.
I believe in the practice of yoga, and the practice of re-framing fear into excitement.
I believe in the sexiness and strength that comes with a flexibility of mind.
I believe we are all the mothers of our own re-invention.
I believe in believing in ourselves; in making what we think, dream, plan and put pen to paper about actually happen.
I believe authenticity is the new black.
I believe life is one big catwalk.
I believe we are modeling what we want for the world, our children and our future with every single thought, word, action and habit we showcase.
I believe when women more fearlessly focus on their happiness, they RAISE happiness. They raise the happiness of everyone around them, lifting communities, cities and countries up. They contribute to world peace.
I believe in Melissa’s company, Kate’s personal brand, Kristina’s coaching business, Angela’s entrepreneurial network, Grace’s events, Allison’s fashion business, Rachel’s acupuncture clinic, Traci’s ‘Get Your Girl Back’ movement, Emily’s Soulful Weight Loss coaching, Hayley’s skincare empire and so many more. I believe these women ~ these haute and happy brands ~ hold a depth that make their products and services not only the solution to their clients’ problems but the solution to problems of the world.
You, me, her, him, this, that, their success, my success. I believe it's all, and we are all, connected.
I believe madly…deeply…in the nurturing, connecting power, love and creative energy of every woman.
I believe in creating our own music ~ it's the only sustainable thing.
I believe in dance.
And guess what? After leaving advertising 12 years ago I danced a lot! Though having worked with brands such as got milk?, Hewlett-Packard, Crystal Cruises, adidas, Nike and Starbucks was thrilling, I was ecstatic to be going out on my own. I wanted a life and freedom of travel, creativity and creating what I wanted to be a part of. I also wanted to go from just being an “ideas girl” to a woman with ideas that meant something in the hearts, lives and beloved businesses of others. I’ve gotten this and so much more.
In 2001, I created MGI as a home for the self-expression of women, a place where women could design businesses and lives that would support their authentic desires and intellectual goals.
Shortly after starting MGI in San Francisco and Los Angeles, my dream of living all over the world began. I started the life of a serial expatriate and “modern-day gypsy.” Traveling the world with this business, my husband and son has been one of the greatest joys and successes of my life. It’s probably no surprise, then, that supporting clients in growing their own international businesses is part of my bliss today.
Around this time, I started my love affair with yoga-ahh as well. Why is this important to share with you? Well, travel and yoga both make an appearance in my business, consulting and coaching style. It’s who I am, yes, but it’s also what I’ve seen work in growing a success mindset that can move mountains. Yoga of the mind is key.
Today, MGI is an international branding, coaching and empowerment agency that helps women in all stages of their business and all seasons of their lives build their couture brand. They get clear on their purpose and decide on the most exciting profit centers of their business.
Beyond the branding and business work, I also love speaking globally around topics such as happiness, charismatic branding, the “iiT factor” and empowering women not to make apologies but to make plans and work towards them, no matter what.
I live for the moment when others meet or look at my clients’ work and say, “Now there’s a woman who knows who she is.” This is what that the world needs more of: women living on purpose, making happiness their business in all regards, without apologies.
In closing, at MGI the personal is professional and the professional is personal. In many ways, this is a family business. I care. We care. And, whether we’re working specifically on your branding, business coaching or motivating and empowering you in a private or group setting, the bottom line is this: it's about leaving your brand ~ your mark ~ on this world.
You're haute and you have one life to strut your stuff, seize it.
Road Tripping Through The RSA – South Africa Self Drive Safari
For the next twenty days, it was me, three of my closest friends and the open road. As a birthday gift, they had planned a safari through South Africa, from Cape Town to Namibia, behind the wheel of a luxurious Volkswagen minivan that we had rented.
The Mothercity
Our self drive tour started early on the Monday morning when we collected our minivan in Cape Town before booking in at the guesthouse in Welgelegen. Although we all live in Cape Town, we thought it would be fun to book into a guesthouse rather to get the holiday spirit starting, while driving around Cape Town, and doing all the tourist attractions we never get round to doing. Ryno wanted to go up Table Mountain in the cable car, Bronwyn wanted to visit Robben Island, while Marius and I were both fine with whatever activities came our way.
The two parts of my stay in Cape Town as a tourist that I enjoyed the most was our trip to Cape Point and the Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens. Cape Point forms part of the Table Mountain National Park and is a combination of rugged, rocky mountains with views of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the lowest tip of the Cape Peninsula. There is much controversy about where the location of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meeting spot is. Some say they meet at Cape Point, but the correct information is that the Cape Agulhas is the meeting place of the two oceans. But this doesn’t take away any reason for you not to visit the Cape Point, which is set to reward you with remarkable, natural scenery, good seafood at the Two Oceans Restaurant and tid-bit of mesmerizing history.
The Winelands
On day four of our tour, we were in the heart of the Cape Winelands and booked in at a bed and breakfast in Franschhoek. I realise this might sound biased, but Franschhoek has always been my favourite location out of all the little towns in the Cape Winelands. Its charming beauty is unrivalled and the atmosphere rouses memories of a little French town where food is not a necessity for life but instead is a delicacy which nature has given to us. We spent our day indulging in too much wine tasting and sampling the best cuisine in South Africa, both of which Franschhoek is infamous for.
After our night’s stay at the Provençal-style country house hotel which we had booked into, we were back on the road, taking turns behind the wheel all the way to Clanwilliam. This little town is located approximately 230km from Cape Town and forms part of the great Cederberg mountain range, which gave us more than enough time to catch up on nonsensical bits of popular culture all the while arguing over which radio station we should listen to. Clanwilliam is renowned for its flowers, which during flower season bloom into fields upon fields of wild flowers and is a highlight in any ardent photographer’s life. We were staying in a four star hotel that had more of an intimate feeling and service which is to be expected in small towns such as Clanwilliam. You feel welcome from your first step into the town. Every little detail in Ndedema seems like it was taken care of personally by the owners.
Closer to the edge
Before we crossed the border, we spent the last night in South Africa in Springbok. This very small town is located in the Namaqualand and was the source of much of our entertainment. We went to one of the pubs and met some of the most interesting people who told us of old farm fables and the things they used to do as children.
After our night of cultural experience, we were on our way to Namibia. The German influence in Namibia is still very obvious. A lot of the local people still speak German and the hospitality of the locals is very welcoming. Marius, who is a Namibian, was able to take lead and soon became our guide from the Fish River Canyon Park to Swakopmund forms part of the Namib Desert. After exploring these, we traveled to Omaruru, where the desert meets the lush green bushveld.
Etosha was always a pleasure to visit on our stay, with many opportunities to see the Big Five Game. Our trip was soon coming to an end, which was filled with twenty days of getting to know my three closest friends even more whilst driving through some of Africa’s most beautiful regions. Although we each had our preferences as to our favourite spots, the fact is that we all enjoyed the trip and were not unsatisfied or unhappy with any part of it. Whenever I think back to our to our trip, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song “Road Tripping” comes to mind, putting a smile on my face and reminding me of our own little road tripping experience.
