Stunning French Farmhouse Style Home Tour

Today’s inspiring home tour is a stunning French farmhouse style home. Featuring rustic chic interiors and a dream kitchen, as well as lots of European touches, it’s a French design lovers dream!

I’m so excited to be sharing today’s Inspiring Home Tour with you – I think you’re gonna love it as much as I do! Designer Brittany Jones is someone I’ve been following on Instagram for awhile now, and I’ve watched as her talent and her portfolio have grown. But today is really special because I’m sharing her personal home with all of you!

Her style is decidedly French, but not fancy. She shares her northwest Texas home with her husband and young daughter and the home exudes a comfortable ambiance that is what I would call approachable elegance.

Mixing both rustic and refined elements, her interiors are both comfortable and chic at the same time.

Cypress trees, iron lanterns and lovely stonework form an inviting entrance to this French farmhouse style home.

The home was custom designed in 2016 by Brittany and her architect.

Those doors! The black steel glass doors really create drama as you enter the home.

Brittany says, “This home was my first big dive into the design world on a scale this size. I am so proud of how my vision came to life! The design was from the heart and a true expression of myself and what is meaningful and special to me. I didn’t follow any trends, I just followed my heart and what is beautiful to ME”.

On the other side of the entry blue linen draperies add soft color to the sitting area.

And my second favorite? Definitely the kitchen! That brick backsplash that goes up the whole wall is such a statement maker.

Vintage looking lanterns in dark metal create contrast in the otherwise neutral space.

“I did a lot of the interior finish work myself. From hand painting the shutters and interior doors, to putting custom finishes on chandeliers to make them ‘just right.’”

The herringbone backsplash is made from reclaimed bricks and brings lots of texture to the space. And the blend of brick with marble countertops creates a rustic chic vibe. The vent hood is custom cast stone.

Her butler’s pantry has a beautiful linen roman shade and holds lots of her pretty dish collection.

french farmhouse dining room brick archway

More reclaimed brick forms an archway that divides the kitchen and living areas. In the dining area upholstered wing chairs and French style side chairs surround a distressed farmhouse table.

In the living room, Brittany chose blue linen for the side chairs and mixed them with sofas in a neutral fabric along with a pretty wool rug in soft colors to ground the space.

french farmhouse style den with wood planked ceiling and brick floors

Brittany says the den is her favorite space in her home!

“I love the reclaimed wood ceiling, the brick pavers, and the intimate nature of the space. It has lower ceilings so naturally it just feels more cozy and warm”.

french farmhouse inspired bedroom tufted headboard french style bench and rustic chandelier

Her master bedroom is a story of understated elegance. A tufted headboard with bedding in soft greens and pinks creates a serene space to retire to at the end of the day. Love that French-style bench with the scalloped edge!

Where did brick used outside with black fountain come from?

We have recently built a French Chateau style home, in Puslinch, Ontario Canada. Your post reminds me a bit of mine. Just one year old now, and still some outdoor landscaping to be completed. It will be featured in Style at Home, a Canadian design magazine I believe in the fall of 2024. Perhaps you would like to see it….. With regard to the American living in France, I agree. I have travelled many areas of the South of France, and the design of not only homes, but restaurants etc is beyond beautiful. Timeless and rustic.

Stephanie your home sounds amazing – what a lucky lady you are to be able to build your dream home! I will definitely look for it next fall when the feature comes out!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Love your home!! Lovely!!!

So glad you love this one too Natalie!

Lovely! What is the flooring in the kitchen?

Beautiful and charmy….perfect armony I love it and all the decoration too! You are very talented, it is very magical! Thanks for sharing

I liked the tour however i think that you need to post more pictures of farmhouses that are actually in France . I am an American who lives in Southwest France , between Souillac and Gourdon in the Occitanie Region. My house was built , at least part of it, in 1680 and is very farmhouse French. If you would like to see pictures please let me know.

I’d love to feature more homes in France – they are just harder to come by! And yours sounds amazing Rebecca – you’re living the life we all dream of!

Quite lovely thank you for sharing..I really like how she didnt limit her color palette because all that white and beige gets boring imho and looks like manufactured french country..lol but hers was just perfect! Will definitely follow on IG thank you!

So glad you loved it as much as I do Deidre!

This house is everything I love!! Just gorgeous, I will definitely will be using this for inspiration!!

Isn’t it stunning? I’m so glad you love it too!

Loved the tour. Also loved the black metal entrance doors. May I ask where she got Those? I can’t find them here in Colorado. Thank you for your response.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it Alice! I have no idea where the doors are from, my guess is they were custom. But you can reach out to her through her Instagram account which I linked in the post. Hope that helps!

This must be a Gianetti design!!

No actually, it’s not! It’s by Brittany Jones! 🙂

Primitive Farmhouse Fall Home Tour

I have already done a Fall home tour on Instagram but then realized I never did a blog post about it. Decorating for Fall is one of my favorite things so I thought let’s go over how I decorated my home on the blog as well. Simple natural touches with a little bit of primitive mixed in is my favorite. I joke that Fall brings out my primitive side. So let’s start my Fall home tour!

Fall Home Tour Entryway

rustic home tours

I love my entryway with my thrifted painting that has the muted colors that just feel like Fall to me. The chippy cabinet stayed the same. Next Fall faux greenery is added to my basket hanging off my farmhouse hook rack to change things up a bit. Then I added my thrifted old nail keg to the corner and put some faux cornstalks in it. It adds a touch of texture and is a fun interesting piece. To see that you can head to my saved IG highlight under Fall tour.

Living Room aka Boy Room

gray cabinet with crocks on top

This room is where my boys love to play video games and watch tv. I keep it very casual and comfy so it would not work to add in a lot of things. Things were kept simple on my blue chippy dresser by adding a sugar mold with some real feathers. My white pie safe just holds a primitive cloth pumpkin with a farmhouse basket full of dried bittersweet. Perfect simple touches of Fall. This tall gray cabinet got a simple makeover with just crocks and a wood crate to add texture. The side table holds a thrifted basket full of gourds. Muted earthy colored quilts line my couch and ottoman to greet the new season as well.

Fall Home Tour Dining Room

rustic home tours

My dining room is one of my favorite spaces because it holds my Hoosier cabinet. That cabinet holds several of my favorite collections…scales. mashers, and Dundee marmalade jars. This area stayed very simple and I only added a hooked rug and battery operated candle for that warm glow. I kept my table centerpiece very simple with an old aluminum pitcher full of dried flax and a cloth primitive pumpkin. An old candle holder adds that simple farmhouse touch.

Ironstone pitcher with a basket of fall florals on top of a green cabinet. It has a gourds sign hanging on it.

The green china cabinet holds an old ironstone pitcher and basket with Fall greenery. Next I added a fun handmade gourd sign for added contrast and texture.

Primitive Farmhouse Kitchen

rustic home tours

My kitchen is one of my most used rooms in the house. We don’t like a lot of clutter and so my decor needs to be cute but simple. A happy fall y’all sign hangs above my gas range. The cute fall wreath adds a punch of color and texture to that space too. Then I decided to change my island and added in my vintage white candy scale. A cute gourd makes a simple statement in the candy holder. Everything else stayed the same.

rustic home tours

These cute primitive cloth pumpkins make a fun vignette with my shoo fly screen and cutting board.

Primitive Farmhouse Family Room

rustic home tours

Finally my family room is where I love to hang out. We all tend to watch tv in here together and is another well used room. I found this old step back cabinet on Facebook Marketplace for a steal and meant to sell it in my antique booth BUT I fell in love with it so it stayed. That piece was my inspiration for how I would decorate for Fall. I wanted a simple country farmhouse look. Next I decided to add my cinnamon pumpkins to my egg holder for a fun look. Then I added a grain sack pumpkin for that added farmhouse look.

my old step back hutch decorated for fall. A quilt and pumpkin pillow on my couch

The chippy cabinet beside my couch got a simple makeover with a farmhouse basket and dried bittersweet. Then a thrifted brass candle holder added some contrast. A farmhouse basket and old crock with dried bittersweet accentuate a vintage oil painting on the other side of my couch. My black gate holds a basket full of wheat for a fun centerpiece above the couch.

I hope you have enjoyed this Fall home tour and I will link as many similar items below as I can in case you see something you might like as well. If you have any questions about anything feel free to ask!

First, A Hello!

Hi, I’m Lora, and I love my home decor to have well-earned character. I’ve been scrounging curbsides and secondhand haunts for vintage finds way too long. I love reviving and repurposing anything old that someone else has given up on. I was a vintage dealer for many years and owned my own store with a friend for 5 1/2 years. It was a blast, but these days I enjoy sharing all my experience with my blog readers and on social media.

Love decorating and making the most of what you already have? You should stick around! Join my newsletter to keep the ideas coming! (it's free:)

My family and I live in a 100+ year old Fake Farmhouse on a couple acres. Even though it’s been 20+ years, we’ve still got projects to do! Hope you enjoy this Fall tour of our home.

Autumn decorated kitchen; the heart of the home.

Our remodeled farmhouse kitchen is indeed the heart of our home. We spent many years designing and remodeling it, mostly by ourselves and are still happy with how it turned out. I enjoy decorating it for each season.

Vintage collections combine with natural clippings from the yard for inexpensive style. We’ve been winding down the veggie garden so I have a lot of tomatoes and zucchini to deal with. I’m enjoying the last of the garden’s flowers, too. Picking fresh bouquets from our yard is one of my favorite things to do!

The end of our kitchen looks out to our wraparound porch. We have a cozy sitting area to enjoy the indoor/outdoor view. If you can squeeze a comfy, upholstered chair or loveseat into your kitchen , I’d highly recommend it. It’s the perfect spot for family and friends to chat while you’re finishing up the meal. {read my “9 Must-Haves for Creating a Cozy Sitting Area in the Kitchen “}

This built-in bookshelf was made with old cupboards that were my grandma’s. This year I was inspired by THIS brand new book and filled the shelves with an all brown collection of vintage. {See more in “Vintage Inspired Decorating Ideas with 57 Buttermilk Acres }.

Fall Decorated Dining Room

Finding the right combination of furniture pieces for your home that have the perfect balance of display and storage can be tricky. Our dining room is space challenged, but this past year I scored a set of upholstered dining chairs on FB marketplace. They are so comfortable compared to the old, hard chairs we had before.

Then I decided this room needed a piece that had both display and storage. I have a lot of stuff because I switch things up every season…and I have a weakness for dishes:) I found the perfect pine hutch on FB again and gave it a vintage-inspired makeover. I am loving being able to style this hutch for the seasons, and all the cupboards and drawers are very handy, too!

My vintage pottery collection fills the shelves this Fall. The table is set for a special brunch I’m having next week with my mom’s best friends. Since she passed away last year from ALS, I’ve been missing them. We’re going to celebrate her birthday and remember stories of her together; I can’t wait.

See “ The Best Faux Pumpkins for Fall Decorating ” for a wide variety of pumpkins. Visit my “Fabric Pumpkin How To ” to learn how I make mine.

Fall Decorated Living Room

Last stop on today’s Fall home tour is our living room. It’s definitely cozy. I’ve filled it with plenty of architectural accessories, shabby chippy finds and vintage industrial style. The Fall decor embraces clippings from the yard: pampus grass, hydrangeas, and corn stalks and husks from a friend. I love mixing organic, natural touches with vintage finds.

Thrifted, handmade afghans provide coziness and seasonal color. Collections of old suitcases, globes and brown bottles add that timeworn, nostalgic touch. Lots of texture is what I love in the Fall!

Rustic Christmas Home Tour

December 4, 2017 by Courtenay Hartford 23 Comments

A rustic Christmas home tour with simple farmhouse-style decor ideas that you can copy in your home this Christmas!

A rustic Christmas home tour with simple farmhouse-style decor ideas that you can copy in your home this Christmas!

I’m so happy to be adding my rustic Christmas home tour to the Canadian Bloggers Home Tour again this Christmas! We did one recently in the Fall and I just think they get better and better every time. We really have such a great mix of homes and decorating styles from all around the country and these tours really do a great job of representing Canadian style. I’m thrilled to be a part of it. 🙂 Once again, this tour is being graciously hosted by Shannon from AKA design and Christina from The DIY Mommy.

Today’s tour will be pretty simple because things have been crazy around here. Do I say that every time? 🙂 Well, maybe it’s always true. We’ve been busy with the mud room renovation , which of course turned out to be a pretty intense experience. Long story short: Our house was pretty much crumbling in several spots, so Chris has painstakingly fixed all that and created a completely level, solid space for us now. Our house is 120 years old though, so there are of course surprises around every turn and even the tiniest detail takes 10 times as long as we think it’s going to.

Another reason that our home tour is a little less extensive this year is that I really kind of went all out on the tree. I had an idea and I just had to bring it to life!

I just love our annual trip to the Christmas tree farm so I decided to create a tree farm-inspired tree. If you’ve been around here forever, then you may remember that I also did a tree farm sign wall in our old mudroom a few years ago. What can I say? I love tree farms! 🙂

I started out with this fun Christmas trailer and used that as my topper. ( Here’s a similar trailer only this one is musical!) I felt like that might be something that you would see at an old tree farm. Like, maybe you’d go into the trailer to pay after you were done picking out your tree.

We have our tree train up again this year, but of course I had to tie a little bottle brush tree to the top as if it’s bringing home a tree as well. 🙂

I created these flags with other features that you might find a tree farm wanting to call its customers’ attention to. You might find a flag pointing you to where the hay rides are, where you can buy hot chocolate, where you can warm up by the fire, where to find Santa, and other things like that. I used upholstery webbing for these and also for a garland around the tree and I love the rustic vibe those things add to the otherwise fairly sparkly tree.

I added just a few other tree farm-y ornaments to the tree on top of my usual basic red ornaments and red berries.

OK, I was stretching for some of these a little, but I still think they all work together and create the classic tree farm-y feel I was going for.

Our tree is sitting in this DIY tree collar we created a few weeks ago , which you can read about here, which really ties things together.

Did you catch those old saws we hung on the wall too? I was definitely fully committed to the theme this year. 🙂

Elsewhere in the House

We have a tray on our new plaid coffee table/ottoman that we use for holding drinks and snacks. As you can see, I’ve also elegantly decorated it with our finest dancing Santa. I’m so glad we have a place of honour for him in our home now, right front and centre. 🙂

Next to the living room, you can see we have a bit more going on in the dining room, which I’ll be sharing tomorrow, so make sure to check back for that!

Chris just installed a new door in here (where we hang our advent calendar every year) and really beautiful new trim and the cats have pretty much destroyed it already as you might be able to see. That’s life with pets!

I have a little tradition of going out to the back yard to clip some greenery to use in the house at Christmastime. I used to make a huge mess, but I’m getting better at knowing what types of greenery are better for which types of applications now and I’ll be talking about that a bit tomorrow as well so make sure you come back to see me tomorrow morning if that’s something you’d like to know a little more about.

We loved your tree with the train around the tree, we want to know how you did it to stand up like that or where did you get the train and tracks from.

Merry Christmas The Whitlocks Susan Verne & Verne Jr.

Hi Susan! It’s a kit that’s made specifically to attach to a tree like this! We got it at Home Depot a couple of years ago. I know they carried it for a few years so they may still have it. It’s the only one like it that I’ve seen!

Small Towns in Russia: Our Journey to the Countryside

We live in moscow and are in love with travelling. should i say, that we have visited every interesting place in nearby 300 km from moscow, but, only few of them still live in our memory as the most attractive. and only few of them are so magnetic that make us return again and again. and only one is so perfect that we even chose it for own wedding party. it is a staritsa town, 700-years old small town in russia with its beautiful surroundings. it's the place where time stopped., staritsa location: the upper volga hills, tver region, 250 km north-west from moscow, about 1/3 of way to st. petersburg, car: soviet uaz van, 2010 year, the starting point: moscow city, tour duration: 2,5 days, how to travel only 200 km from moscow and find the real russia, we love staritsa town so much that we travel there several times every year. as usual, our may journey to staritsa began from packing our bags into crazybu (uaz-452 "bukhanka" or "loaf of bread" minivan). after only 4 hours of merry chatting inside the van with georgian wine and a fast highway and we are almost there.

UAZ 452 Russian Van

There are some guesthouses and hotels in Staritsa, but we usually prefer camping on the high bank of the Volga River with amazing river view from the "windows" of our tents. The rays of the sun, chill wind from the river and intense smell of evergreen fill our morning.

Images of Rural Russia on the bank of the Volga River

This was the first time when we visited "Chukavino" eco-land, nice place especially for children and animal lovers! There were many types of horses as well as camel, reindeer and numerous ducks, chickens and turkeys. And surely, husky - VERY active and VERY sociable animals that lick us from head to toe! Should I say that everyone was thrilled?

Husky Nursery in Russia

The weather was quite cloudy – a standard situation for Russian spring. Our next stop was a nearby church and the old beautiful mansion. The story of this place is typical for Russian cultural objects: they were nationalized by USSR and transmitted to the local factory.

Then "perestroika" and chaos of 1990-s, attempt to restore the mansion, then strange complicated story resulted in many property disputes. now the area doesn't belong to anyone and remains in constant disrepair..

Abandoned Russia... the real countyside

However, the place still looks impressive despite or even because of the creepy atmosphere. Just look at the photos - someone dries out old floorboard just in front of the gates of 17th century church. The latter is abandoned, too - wild flowers and young trees started to grow through ancient gravestones...

There were also a very old and branchy tree without leaves (the spring...) and there was a self-made bench with table beneath with a strange-looking old woman. further we found a very old car, several tumbledown buildings and... are you ready an ostrich farm ostrich shared the place with a flock of sheep standing knee-deep in the mud. from the dusty may sun her looming shadow grows... true detective (c) what a place.

Rural Russian Farm

Small towns of Russia has a very interesting feature... They could look nice and picturesque when it gets some sunshine or depressed and creepy when the weather is cloudy, especially in the rainy springs when everything is grey. This time the weather was cloudy so we enjoyed the atmosphere of desertion and nostalgia for the greatness of the past epochs.

Abandoned car in Russia

Staritsa town was grey but impressive, too. All these beautiful churches of several hundred years old, ancient monastery, the high bank of Volga River, authentic 19th century manors and almost no tourists - that's why we like this small Russian town so much!

Staritsa, small town in the Russian Countryside

We also met a professional historian working as a guide (because he earns about 150 USD at the "main" job). He was slim, had bushy red hair and bright blue eyes. We thought that many years later he could be the Professor in the next "Back to the Future" movie!

Monastery in the Russian countryside

Our next stop was Torzhok, another small town in Russia that is located 70 km from Staritsa by (typical for Russia) a very bad road full of potholes and ghost towns. But the weather was great! Just feel the difference! What a beauty!

Torzhok, small town in Russia

Moreover, we were extremely lucky because it was the main day of a medieval festival! We saw a large tent city and a lot of re-constructors wearing beautiful medieval clothes. Then there was much sparring between warriors in armor of different types. And finally we enjoyed the battle between two armies of about 50 people each! It was really impressive...

Medieval Festival, Russia

It was long day and long journey. We spent two days there but it felt like a week at least! Nice company + nice place + luck => amazing journey. Thanks, guys!

Waiting for our next journey to explore small towns of russia ., do you want to travel the small towns in the russian countryside.

Golden Ring of Russia for 4-7 days

During first days we will visit all must-see place in Moscow. Whether you're looking to visit medieval monasteries, historic houses, stunning cathedrals, soviet monumental skyscrapers, wonderful parks and more, there are plenty of landmark destinations to visit when you're in Moscow.

The next 2-3 days we will see life in the typical Russian provinces visiting small towns of the famous Golden ring of Russia. It is a ring of ancient towns, which also played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. They still preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history.

The towns are one of the best places to visit in Russia! They have been called "open-air museums" and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. You will also see a lot of rural Russia with its old wooden houses and traditional villages.

From Moscow to St. Petersburg for 5 days

There is a great difference between Moscow, St. Petersburg, and all other Russia... The concept of this tour is to show you the real Russia with numerous small towns, pristine nature, abandoned churches and the life of people.

This tour does not include Golden Ring towns! Instead, you will see Staritsa town and Novgorod the Great, beautiful places to visit in Russia!

We will also visit an elderly couple living in a traditional Russia village. We will help them with their daily work - plowing the land (not by tractors, but by horses), caring for the livestock and cooking food in a traditional Russian oven… And surely we will taste some real fresh milk and eggs while they will be telling us about their common life, their habits, and the households.

The itinerary is perfect for those who are going to St. Petersburg. It takes only 4 hours to get there from Novgorod by a cheap local train.

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

 • 0 Pinterest

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

 • Red Square tours in Moscow

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

16 – Spend the afternoon exploring the State Tretyakov Gallery

State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow

Boasting the reputation of being one of the world’s leading art museums, the State Tretyakov Gallery is home to a stunning collection that features well over 100,000 works from Russia and around the globe.

Featuring everything from ancient Russian icons to Soviet-era artifacts and contemporary pieces, the museum also houses a charming green garden perfect for recharging.

Visitors are advised to allocate at least three hours inside to properly appreciate everything on show — or consider booking a private VIP tour to skip the lines and focus on the best sections.

17 – Get out of town to the Tsaritsyno Museum & Nature Reserve

Tsaritsyno Museum & Nature Reserve, Moscow

Located a short drive from the hustle and bustle of the Red Square, this incredible attraction is both a palatial museum and cultural center, with an enchanting open-air garden to boot — spread across 405 hectares altogether.

Boasting beautiful 18th-century baroque architecture, it was originally built as a country retreat for Catherine the Great. However, it has since been transformed into an outdoor museum with several museums inside — including exhibits dedicated to Russian history and culture.

18 – Tick off the main haunts with a hop-on hop-off bus ride

bus tours in Moscow

Short on time or just can’t be bothered walking around anymore? Then make sure to check out the double-decker Hop-on-Hop-off Bus, a convenient and cheap way of seeing all the main attractions in one go.

With unlimited-ride tickets lasting between 24 and 72 hours, there’s plenty of flexibility to soak in must-see areas like Red Square, the Kremlin, Arbatskaya Square, Theatre Square, and the Red October neighborhood — and with a free audio tour (in English) throughout the ride, you’re sure to learn a thing or two as well.

Busses usually run every 15 minutes, with the full city loop taking roughly an hour — of course, you can disembark and reboard to your heart’s content.

19 – Learn about military history on Poklonnaya Hill

Poklonnaya Hill, Moscow

For an up-close and personal experience with the past, make sure to check out Poklonnaya Hill — a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 20 minutes out from the city center that’s home to several relics from Russia’s pre-revolutionary era.

It has everything from Great Patriotic War memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers of the Russian military forces, to the Eternal Flame and the Museum of Great Patriotic War. This is an unmissable opportunity for history buffs.

Hot tip: While you’re in the area, be sure to stop into the Victory Museum (the nation’s biggest military history museum) and check out the gold-tipped Church of St. George the Victorious .

Saddle Up! ‘Cowgirl Core’ Is Riding Into Town—Here’s How To Get the Hot New Look

The sold-out Stagecoach Country Music Festival kicks off on Friday in Indio, CA, and that’s not all putting a giddy-up in our saddle these days.

The catchy Beyoncé lyric “This ain’t Texas” is everywhere right now—and it’s only the latest bit of country twang to influence the trendy interior look known as “cowgirl core.”

This casual, rugged home style is pushing aside the glamorous “ mob wife aesthetic ” and the colorful “ Palm Royale ” designs in favor of a look that channels our love of adventure and the wild, wild West.

It makes sense that cowgirl (and boy!) decor is gaining traction as this all-American look is having a huge moment right now.

From Queen Bey’s release of her red-hot “Cowboy Carter” album this spring to the popularity of many western-themed TV shows (“Yellowstone,” “Longmire,” “1883,” “Walker,” “Elkhorn”), it was only a matter of time before homes that look like they are on a chic yet rugged range popped up in interiors.

Want to learn more about this trending look ? Read on for the backstory and insider tips on how to bring cowgirl core into your rooms.

What is ‘cowgirl core’?

Cowgirl core is a combo platter of Western style with bits of Americana (think metal barn stars, quilts, and gingham or checked patterns).

“The trend is also associated with the American Wild West and its dry, desert climate,” notes Lauren Kavanagh , art director at Hovia .

The home’s materials should mimic the landscape, such as “woven baskets, relaxed recycled furniture, dried flowers, cacti, and macrame accents,” she explains.

Cowgirl core is similar to mountain modern style , though this trend is a bit more rugged. It taps into nubbly textures, animal skins, and roughhewn wood to achieve a look that pays tribute to the outdoors and the American independent spirit.

How did this decor style start?

Cowgirl core has deep roots in American history and the icons we’ve long revered, explains longtime Texas resident Beverly Solomon , of the eponymous design firm.

“Cowboys and Native Americans have always been the image and lifestyle that people around the world recognize when thinking of freedom and the American West—and especially Texas,” she says. “It’s that romanticized image of a life lived free in our nation’s open and majestic spaces.”

As with many decor trends, this one has also taken many cues from the worlds of fashion, movies, and music—think Beyoncé in her chic white Stetson and the viral “Fast Car” duet by Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs .

“Of course, Ralph Lauren hit the bull’s-eye with his American Heritage collections dedicated to Western clothes and furnishings,” adds Solomon.

And then there’s the massive juggernaut “ Barbie ,” says Kavanagh. “The hit movie was full of Western-style references, from Barbie’s iconic pink cowgirl outfit to Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa house, complete with the swinging saloon-style doors.”

What does cowgirl core look like?

Sure, barn doors could work in a cowgirl core home—these sliders are everywhere nowadays, thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines and their wildly popular modern farmhouse aesthetic.

“Leather, wood, and stone are associated with cowboy decor, as well as wrought iron, minerals, and hand-woven fabrics,” Solomon adds.

Kavanagh points out that whimsy can also work when incorporating cowgirl core into your rooms.

“Try playful motifs like cowgirl boots and horseshoes in wallpaper or vases and candles,” she says. But cowgirl core doesn’t have to be so on the nose (not everything needs to be cactus-shaped). Try it in a small way, maybe with a woven carpet.

Solomon loves the idea of a Navajo rug, though the real deal is pricey. You can look for an antique with some wear and tear or consider a reproduction, she says.

Which rooms are best for cowgirl core?

Not sure if you want to lasso cowgirl core in your more public spaces? A bedroom or bathroom is the perfect spot for this treatment.

A homespun quilt on a guest bed, whether new or vintage, or a quilt-like tile pattern on a shower wall is a small but sweet way to try cowgirl core.

Kavanagh has seen the look work in both living rooms and the bedroom, depending on your willingness to embrace the style.

“You might want the maximalist interpretation with a cowhide-effect wallpaper,” she says. Or lean minimally with a throw pillow or blanket accent.

How to bring cowgirl core to your rooms

Rawhide pendant lights with visible stitching can illuminate a home bar or small table in a dining nook.

Or bring cowgirl core to your rooms with cowboy art to hang on a wall. Consider Connor Liljestrom , an artist based in Jackson, WY, who creates large-scale cowboy and cowgirl pieces. The in-demand painter sells limited-edition prints of his work, alongside special releases of the original artwork.

A fresh coat of paint can transform a ho-hum white room into one with a cowgirl feel.

“Think warm desert tones here, and neutrals, too, like sandy beige, warm whites, muted dusty pinks, and shades of brown,” says Kavanagh.

Antler decor fits the theme well, but don’t be tempted to hang ones harvested from hunted animals (there are permit issues, Solomon says).

“Stick with bones made from other materials like ceramic or plastic,” she suggests.

Also, “avoid using raw wood or corrugated tin—these might work in a rustic hunting cabin but not so much in your home,” she adds.

Too many literal cowboy items, like saddles for seats, a wall of hats, and chaps draped on railings, can seem trite. (You’re not living in a saloon, after all!)
