The Sacramento Regional Fire Museum is a privately funded non-profit started to preserve, exhibit and educate about the rich history of firefighters in the Sacramento region. If you would like to help us continue to preserve our piece of Sacramento History, please consider donating.

Another great way to support the museum and our preservation of Sacramento firefighter history is to become a museum member. Membership benefits start with free admission to the museum all year round

Volunteers are essential to what we do and it is because of their generosity that we have been able to start a museum dedicated to fire safety and history. If you share our passion for fire history, safety, and education contact us about volunteering at the museum.

Meet the Fire Chief of the Sacramento Fire Department

Chris Costamagna is the Fire Chief for the City of Sacramento, California. Chief Costamagna started his fire service career with Cal Fire in May 1990. Chris entered the Sacramento Fire Department academy on September 11th, 1995.

Before his promotion, he served as the Deputy Chief of Technical Services, responsible for the research and development of the new Personal Protective Equipment and Cancer Reduction Initiative, along with the management of multiple resource development initiatives and several key evolutions, including a new dispatch system in the stations and the delivery of two replacement stations.

Some vital technological advances were upgrading the SCBA fleet from low to high pressure, installing thermal imagers in the department in 2004, and managing divisions. These divisions include logistics, information technology, communications, facilities, and fleet development.

photo of fire chief costamagna in full uniform with hat. A gray background with U.S. flag.

Early in his career, Chief Costamagna worked on standardizing riding positions  and some of the first standard operating guidelines (SOGs), which included riding positions, and standard equipment packages for engines and trucks and the tools assigned to the riding positions. During this time, Chief Costamagna began to get involved with teaching in the fire service, working for Fire Engineering and Firehouse magazines, and teaching both classroom and hands-on training. He continued teaching and working on both the first-generation Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) packs and the large area search rope and bags that were a necessary complement to the addition of the thermal imaging cameras (TIC) that were placed into service in early 2004.

Chief Costamagna has also been involved with the Urban Search and Rescue Team since 1996, where he has held multiple operational and management positions, from squad leader to task force leader. Chief Costamagna was the Task Force Program Manager and the Western Division Program Manager representative for six years, from May 2011 to 2017. Chris is currently the Task Force Sponsoring Agency Chief, representing the 200-person FEMA Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Branch team. Chief Costamagna has deployed to several National US&R events, including the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, and more recently deployed as an Incident Support Team member to Texas, Massachusetts, and Puerto Rico during the 2017 and 2021 hurricane seasons.

Chief Costamagna is a graduate of Waldorf University with honors, earning a B.S. in Fire Science Administration and leadership. He has also attended Harvard University’s Kennedy School certificate program on Crisis Management. In 2018, he graduated from Monterey, California's Naval Postgraduate Executive Leadership program. Over the past three decades, he has responded to some of our nation’s most significant disasters in operational and management positions. Along with his responses to catastrophes, Chief Costamagna has always brought his experience back to the department and the city. Chris has worked through the department ranks from firefighter to fire chief since his start in September 1995.

Outside of work, Chris enjoys spending time with his family, including his two adult daughters, who have each been Division One Student athletes and role models to many young women leaders in the community. Chris holds the outdoors close to his heart, as he is an avid alpine skier and hiker.

Fire station open houses begin this Saturday

_MG_3350-2

This Saturday kicks off Sacramento Fire’s open house series. At the open houses, the public is invited to come out and talk with members of their fire department, tour the station, and get valuable life safety and fire prevention tips. The open houses are free to the public and will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on select Saturdays.

These open houses provide a way for residents to get a quick reminder about fire safety. Plus it is rare for the public to get the opportunity to interact with firefighters in non-emergency situations.

Attend a station open house near you! Check out the schedule to see which one is most convenient for you to attend.

Natomas Fire Station Open House Events

STAFF REPORT THE NATOMAS BUZZ | @natomasbuzz

The Sacramento Fire Department will host open house events at stations throughout the city from July through September.

There are currently 24 active fire stations strategically located throughout the Sacramento Fire Department’s service area. Eight stations are north of the American River, seven stations in the central downtown and eastern sections of the city, and nine stations in the southern portion of the city.

Are you interested in seeing what the inside of a fire station looks like? Finding out more about what it’s like to be a firefighter? Round up the family and visit with the fire crews, tour the stations, and learn more about what they do.

Open house events scheduled at Natomas-area stations include:

  • July 9 — Fire Station No. 43, 4201 El Centro Road, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Sept. 10 — Fire Station No. 18, 746 N. Market Boulevard, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“We are only featuring one station per Council district,” fire department spokesperson Capt. Keith Wade said. “The reason is because Covid restrictions were removed so late into the year that we couldn’t accommodate our full schedule before the weather changes again.”

New apartment building being built in Sacramento goes up in flames

By Cecilio Padilla , Kayla Moeller , Rachel Wulff

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 6:12 PM PDT / CBS Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -- A massive fire erupted overnight into Tuesday at a Sacramento apartment building under construction.

Sacramento Fire says one of their engines was heading back from a medical aid call when they noticed some smoke near 19th and X streets. After investigating it a little further, crews encountered the building engulfed in flames.

The building involved is a new, five-story mixed commercial and apartment structure that was under construction.

No injuries and the cause is under investigation. pic.twitter.com/CRlXCYsqTI — Sacramento Fire Department (@SacFirePIO) March 26, 2024

Firefighters say at least one building is a total loss. No injuries have been reported.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg noted how the project was meant to address the need for affordable housing in the city.

"We are disappointed that it will be delayed but so grateful for the tireless efforts of our firefighters, who worked into the early hours this morning and saved half of the project along Broadway. We are relieved that nobody was hurt," Steinberg wrote on X/Twitter.

Who is the builder and what's next?

The construction company, Brown Construction, Inc. , is based out of West Sacramento. They've been licensed since 1980.

In a statement, the construction company said they were still waiting for more information from fire and other officials.

"Brown Construction's first priority is the safety of the public and safety of crews working in close proximity to the damaged structure. We appreciate the efforts of the Sacramento Fire Department to lessen the amount of damage on this project. At this point we are awaiting additional information from both fire and building departments, as well as insurance providers, regarding cause and next steps forward," the company stated.

In the meantime, Brown Construction has shut down traffic and pedestrian access to areas deemed unstable and says they'll remove those unsafe conditions as soon as possible and get to rebuilding.

Neighbors say it was "like a huge oven"

More than 120 firefighters were deployed to put out the fire and stop the spread. One nearby homeowner says it isn't anything new to hear sirens, but the ongoing sirens alerted him that something was wrong.

"I noticed it just kept coming and coming, and then I noticed my house was a little too warm for this time of night," said Humberto Lopez, who lives nearby. "We went outside and we noticed a big blaze."

Jeanne Neal was one neighbor who walked outside during the active fire and said it felt like she stepped right into summer.

"it was like a huge oven, so hot,"  Neal said.

Neal added that the scene felt reminiscent of conditions in another state.

"My dad lived in Arizona and he said when you walk outside, sometimes it's kind of like hitting a brick wall," she said. "That's what it was like."

Sacramento Fire said a priority was making sure the flames didn't jump the alley there.

"To have it so close, the fact it was so big, I'm a block from here. How hard would it be to jump over there?" nearby resident Scott Dworkis wondered.

Pasadena’s new Fire Chief Chad Augustin is set to take the helm of the Fire Department in just more than two weeks, with initial priorities including disaster preparedness and improving patient care.

After completing his current duties as deputy fire chief of the Sacramento Fire Department, Augustin is scheduled to begin his tenure in Pasadena on Feb. 22.

“As your newest resident, I look forward to living in a city that embraces so much history and tradition while fostering growth in innovation,” Augustin said. “I can’t wait to attend my first Rose Bowl and Rose Parade.”

Augustin rose through the ranks of the Sacramento Fire Department since joining the department in 1999, according to the agency. In addition to his firefighting work, he has also served as a paramedic on a rescue helicopter for the past two decades.

“My goal is for Pasadena to become known as the most resilient city in California,” he said. “The next disaster is coming, whether an earthquake, flood, fire, mudslide, or pandemic, and it is my responsibility to work closely with the community to provide well-prepared and trained staff. Through community partnerships and education, we can achieve this goal.”

Among his achievements in Sacramento, Augustin was instrumental in securing the department’s position as one of only three fire agencies in the state to earn a “Gold Plus” rating from the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Program in 2019, Sacramento city officials said at the time.

The award recognizes “extensive training and response to maximize the survival chance of patients experiencing what’s known as a ‘STEMI’ — a severe type of heart attack,” according to a city statement .

Augustin said he hoped to do the same in Pasadena.

“I am very passionate about improving patient care and outcomes. I look forward to the Pasadena Fire Department receiving the ‘Gold Plus’ level of recognition for the betterment of the residents we serve,” he said.

“It is a deliberate effort of training, education and partnership with local hospitals to receive this highest level of recognition by the American Heart Association, Augustin added.

“With the excellent reputation of service to the Pasadena community, this award is definitely within reach of the Pasadena Fire Department,” he said.

Augustin was also recognized for heroism in April 2014. Then a captain in the Sacramento Fire Department, “Augustin courageously located and removed an unconscious victim out of a burning building after being told a man was trapped inside,” according to a city statement .

The new chief’s interest in firefighting was sparked at an early age when his parents took him on a tour of a local fire station.

“I was hooked. The impact of that one single visit changed my life forever,” he said. “In fact, the story is that I wore a firefighter costume for the next two weeks straight. That is the kind of impact this Fire Department has and will continue to have for the young residents of Pasadena.”

His admiration for first responders only grew during his first year of college, “when I was struck by a vehicle and transported by ambulance to the hospital,” Augustin recalled. “To this day, I still remember the level of professionalism and compassion that the paramedics provided.

“Soon after, I enrolled in an EMT course and later went on to paramedic training. Twenty-five years later, I still have the privilege of caring for patients and enjoy every minute of it,” he said. “Along with my fire department work, I worked on a medical life-flight helicopter for almost 20 years. The level of teamwork and critical thinking required is immense, and like firefighting, it is very rewarding.”

Augustin said he also enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie of the profession.

“Hands down, the two things I enjoy most about firefighting is the teamwork aspect of the job, as well as the ability to help someone on their worst day,” he said.

“Due to the long work schedules, firefighters frequently spend more time with their co-workers than with their own families,” he added. “Ultimately, we develop familial and trusting relationships. The camaraderie we have not only helps us contend with daily chores and tasks around the firehouse, but it helps us get through emotionally and physically challenging emergency calls.”

When not at work, Augustin enjoys athletics, competing several times in the Police and Firefighter Olympics as a bodybuilder, as well as the Firefighter Olympics in Crossfit.

“My fitness achievements have given me an accessible platform to work with community youths in teaching goal-setting, maintaining focus, discipline, and consistency,” Augustin said. “Working with the youth in the community, while being a positive role model, is one way that I believe I can give back to those that have helped me.”

His work as a helicopter medic also launched a passion for aviation, he said.

“After a decade of flying in the back of the helicopter, I set out to obtain my fixed-wing pilot’s license,” Augustin said. “In two years of squeezing in flight time during my days off, I earned my wings; I really enjoy the peace and freedom that aviation allows.”

Augustin said he was honored to be selected to head the Pasadena Fire Department.

“I am thrilled to be part of the community of Pasadena. As your next fire chief, I will be more than just an employee that works for the city; I will be living in the community and look forward to being your neighborhood fire chief,” he said.

“I really appreciate the level of trust that the community bestows upon us,” Augustin said. “We are welcomed into their homes and have the privilege of working hard to help resolve any emergency. Whether it is helping someone who has fallen and needs assistance getting back up and into bed or fighting a fire, every 911 call allows us an opportunity to serve the public and make their worst day a little bit better.”
