Take a Self-Guided Powell Street Brewery Bike Tour

by Taryn Eyton in Food & Drink , Town on February 16, 2022

Ceviche and beer at Andina Brewing in Vancouver

Take in the heart of Vancouver’s craft brewery district in this self-guided tour through the Powell Street portion of “Yeast Van”. It visits five breweries on a 1.8 km-long route that is perfect for biking or walking.

Biking Note: This route uses quiet streets and bike lanes where possible, but it does involve a little bit of riding on busy streets. Walk your bike on the sidewalk if you aren’t comfortable. Use this link for turn-by-turn directions on Google maps.

1st Stop: Parallel 49 Brewing Company

Start your self-guided tour of Powell Street breweries at Parallel 49 Brewing.

Lauded as one of BC’s top craft breweries, Parallel 49 Brewing makes a wide range of beer styles and often verges into the experimental. Perennial favourites include the Trash Panda Hazy IPA and Ruby Tears Northwest Red Ale. They also have an indoor food truck serving up a full restaurant menu that includes, snacks, burgers, wings, and salads.

Location: 1990 Triumph Street, Vancouver

2nd Stop: Andina Brewing

To get to your next stop, head west on Triumph Street. Go left on Salisbury, then right on Pandora half a block later. Turn left on Woodland, then right on Franklin, and finally right on McLean. Cross Powell Street at the light and arrive at Andina Brewing.

Andina Brewing brings something different to East Vancouver’s craft beer scene. The brewery’s founders celebrate their Columbian roots in the decor of the tasting room, the South American food on offer, and of course the beer. Many of their brews have a Latin American twist since they are made with panela cane sugar or fruits like guava.

Location: 1507 Powell Street, Vancouver

3rd Stop: Powell Brewery

Your third stop is located just half a block west along Powell Street. Thankfully, the north sidewalk is also a multi-use path for walkers and pedestrians.

The family-run operation at Powell Brewery has a history of making award-winning beers. In addition to classics like Old Jalopy Pale Ale and Ode to Citra Pale Ale, they also offer up a line of low-calorie beers under the SLTZR moniker. The owners also run Aftermath Barbecue, so you can often enjoy delicious Texas-style brisket, sausage, and more served on the patio.

Location: 1357 Powell Street, Vancouver

4th Stop: Callister Brewing

You’ll have to backtrack slightly to get to your next stop. Head back east along Powell, then turn right to go south on McLean. Make your next right onto Franklin and find Callister Brewing near the end of the block.

Callister Brewing touts itself as Canada’s first collaborative brewery. They support independent brewers to brew and sell beer with them. They have 12 rotating taps and three cask engines. For non-drinkers, they also make Callister Craft Soda.

Last Stop: Container Brewing

To continue on your self-guided brewery tour, go west on Franklin, then turn right on Clark Drive. Head north for a block on Clark, then turn left onto Powell. Go left on Vernon, then left again onto Franklin to arrive at Container Brewing.

Named in honour of the nearby port, Container Brewing has a big, tw0-level tasting room and a patio where you can enjoy New England-inspired beer with a West Coast influence. They also have a resident food truck serving up snacks like chicken parm sandwiches and “beeramisu” which is made with stout-soaked ladyfingers.

Bike Tour FAQs

Should i tip my bike tour guide.

While not mandatory, tipping is appropriate and our guides certainly appreciate it for a job well done! As in other service-based industries, tipping encourages the outstanding service that our guides continue to provide. Please consider this when planning your monetary needs on the tour.

What time should I arrive for the tour? What if I’m late?

Please arrive no less than 15 minutes in advance of your tour departure so that you have time to sign a waiver form and be fitted for bike and helmet.

Tours start promptly at the time stated. We cannot wait for late guests as this affects the experience of other riders. If you are late, please try calling as we may be able to help you catch up to the group.

Where do the bike tours start and end?

All Cycle City bike tours depart from and return to our shop at 648 Hornby Street .

Do I have to book a bike tour in advance?

Yes, please book a bike tour in advance as space is limited. You can book your desired tour and departure time on our bookings page . If you’d like to join a tour departing in the next 24 hours, please  contact us  directly to see if we can find you a place.

What if it rains on the day of my bike tour?

Our city is located in a Temperate Coastal Rainforest climate, so it does rain here regularly. As Vancouverites, we don’t let “liquid sunshine” keep us from riding and our tours depart rain or shine. You can still have an amazing tour if dressed for the weather, and we provide light ponchos for your use.

Our 24 hour cancellation policy allows you to cancel the day before if the forecast looks bad.  Tour guests can now also pay an additional 7% fee to extend the cancellation policy to 1 Hr before departure for those that prefer to make a last minute decision.

Please Note: June, July, August and September are typically the driest months of the year, but it is wise to bring along an extra layer just in case the forecast indicates a chance of rain ( local forecast ).

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your booking for a full refund with minimum 24 hours notice before your departure time. Due to limited space on our public tours, no refund is possible within 24 hours of tour departure. Read our cancellation policy for more details.

Please Note: We may be able to reschedule your booking if unforeseen circumstances arise. This is based on tour availability.
