Baby Shower

A safari baby shower is so easy to throw together.

How To Throw A Safari-Themed Baby Shower

Welcome to the jungle!

There’s a lot of hard work that goes into planning the perfect baby shower . Not only do you have to find a great venue and work on a guest list that everyone will be happy with, but you also have to come up with the right theme, and then stick to it... with everything. A safari- themed baby shower is a really fun idea for the mama-to-be who loves nature or animals (or both), and is even more perfect if the parents are going to be doing a safari theme for their little one’s nursery.

To throw a safari-themed baby shower that feels Pinterest-worthy, you’ll need to put a lot of thought into every little detail. I recently threw my daughter a safari-themed birthday party (2 Wild!), so I consider myself something of an expert here, OK? The good news is that the safari theme is a popular one, so there are tons of cute options out there to choose from, whether you’re looking for the best invitations, the most creative food selections, or the most fun decorations. Check out the ideas below to get started.

We only include products that have been independently selected by Romper's editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

Safari Baby Shower Invitations

Invitations are the first step in your party planning. Picking an on-theme invitation is important because it shows everyone exactly what to expect and sets the mood. You have some options on how to go about this:

  • Opt for a calligrapher . If you have the budget for it, hire a calligrapher or similar professional to make your invitations for you. This gives you the ability to help them create a totally customized invitation, and they will typically also write out the envelopes as well, so all you have to do is put them together and send them out. Keep in mind that this is the most expensive option.
  • Order invitations online. Not into the custom idea? There are tons of sites online you can order invites from, and they range from very inexpensive to more premium, depending on what you’re looking for. I personally love Minted because the prices are reasonable, and they will also address your envelopes for no extra charge.
  • Go the Etsy route. For an even cheaper option and something that feels more unique, look for invites on Etsy . Lots of artists make the most adorable invitations, and many of them offer the ability to download them as a PDF for a flat rate (this is usually less than $10). From there, you can get them printed at a store like Staples and send them out yourself, or print them at home.
  • Do e-vites! Evites are super easy, inexpensive (or even free), convenient, and the most sustainable option. A lot of my friends use Evite.com and it works out really well. This is also the easiest way to keep track of RSVPs.

If you do want to order your invitations online, here are some of the cutest safari options.

Safari Animal Baby Shower Invitation

Safari Baby Shower Centerpieces

Get creative and DIY your own centerpieces or buy them already made. Here are some ideas to take inspiration from:

A Sand-Filled Glass Jar

Gold Safari Animals

Buy some glass jars, sand, fake palm leaves, and gold jungle animals (like these from Etsy ). Fill the bottoms of the tall jars with sand, throw some animals in there, and add some leaves. It looks both cute and sophisticated.

Mini Diaper Cakes

Animal Diaper Centerpieces

These mini diaper cakes work double duty as a fun centerpiece idea and as a gift for the mama-to-be — they can unravel them and use the diapers when baby gets here. Buy them from Etsy or craft them yourself.

Metallic Palm Trees

Palm trees are perfect for a jungle-themed party. These don’t require much else at all and they’re super easy since they don’t require any DIY.

Palm Leaves Bouquet

Monstera Leaves

For something slightly more chic, get some artificial monstera leaves and put them in a slim white vase. This is simple and feels more elegant and less cutesy.

Safari Baby Shower Balloons

Balloons are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to make any room or backyard look more festive and on theme. You can either buy balloons online and blow them up yourself (just be sure to look into helium machines), or you can order them from a party store near you. I love the animal print balloons that I used at my daughter’s party (linked below), and it’s also a cute idea to get some animal-shaped ones as well. A balloon arch is always fun, and while they can take a while, they’re worth it for the photos. Or you can hire someone to make them for you!

Safari Balloon Garland

Safari Baby Shower Signs

Signs are a cute decoration for the entrance into whatever room or venue you’re using, and they’re also fun to scatter along the various food and gift tables. Banners are also a great idea to add below a balloon arch or draped from a table.

Safari Baby Shower Welcome Sign

Safari Baby Shower Decorations

You can also scatter some other decorations around the room. Think baby blocks with a safari theme (bonus points if they can be used as nursery room decor later on), small items like hand-held fans to place at the tables, or diaper cakes that are on-theme.

Animal Safari Set

Safari Baby Shower Photo Backdrops

You obviously need to have a great spot for photos for social media! This is so fun for making memories and capturing images of your guests that you’ll want later on. You can do a sign with your name and date, or something a bit more general, like leafy greens that can easily be reused for photos or an event later on.

Safari Baby Shower Backdrop

Safari Baby Shower Games

This is a baby shower, so of course you have to have games, no matter how corny it might seem. You can keep games on theme with cute decorations that go along with them. Some cute ideas: put animal crackers in a jar and get people to guess how many, match the Disney animals to their parents, and do a jungle Price is Right. You can also rely on classics like advice cards, diaper raffles, and bingo.

Guess How Many Animal Crackers

Safari Baby Shower Paper Goods

If the baby shower is being held at someone’s home or in an outdoor venue that requires you to provide utensils and plates and all of that, then you’ll need to have paper goods on hand. And sure, you could opt for a solid color for everything, and that’s totally fine. But it’s a little more fun to stay on theme. Opt for fun animal print napkins and plates, and Meri Meri offers this amazing line of creative plates and napkins as well.

Go Wild Toucan Napkins

Safari Baby Shower Party Favors

A small favor is expected at something like a baby shower, and they can be fun to pick out. You can go for something traditional and classic, like a candle or hand sanitizer (which is really popular right now), or something that feels more appropriate for the theme: think animal crackers in a bag or leopard print scrunchies.

Safari Baby Shower Candle

Safari Baby Shower Dessert Ideas

Maybe the most fun part of the whole baby shower is coming up with a safari themed dessert table. If you’re planning on supplying desserts for the shower, there are tons of ideas out there for the cutest jungle animal treats.

Safari Animal Pretzel Sticks

pretzel animal sticks

Inspired by an image on Pinterest , I *painstakingly* made these pretzel sticks for my daughter’s safari party, and they were a hit. I chose to do tiger stripes, cheetah/leopard print, and zebra print. It’s simple, but time-consuming: dip pretzels in melted chocolate (I found orange, salted caramel, and white chocolate at the craft store near me), then add the design using melted dark or milk chocolate. I used a toothpick to create these designs, and yes, it took about as long as it sounds like it would. But I think they came out so fun! And, bonus: these also work as a good edible favor.

Monkey, Lion, & Tiger Cupcakes

animal cupcakes

Inspired by the recipes for jungle cupcakes on Chelsea’s Messy Apron , I made these lion, tiger, and monkey cupcakes. These were not as hard as they seem — I’m not a professional by any means and had no trouble doing these with my mom and aunt. They’re a little time-consuming, but completely worth it, because they were adorable — and delicious. I chose cupcakes instead of cake, but you can do both.

Chic Safari Cake Pops

cake pops

You can buy these chic gold safari theme cake pops from Etsy , or you can make them yourself. These definitely look like a professional is necessary, so I recommend buying them if you’re not a pro at this kind of thing.

Jungle Theme Rice Krispie Treats

safari rice krispy

Another item you can buy from Etsy or make yourself is these jungle-themed Rice Krispie treats. You would decorate them with melted chocolate, which seems relatively simple, if not a little time-consuming. These are another item that look so cute on the dessert table, or can easily be wrapped up and sent off as edible party favors.

Jungle Cookies

safari cookies

Custom decorated cookies like these are always a popular option. They taste good and look so amazing. You can buy these from Etsy , or you can try creating them yourself. This palm leaf and animal set is adorable, but the options here are really endless.

Do you know where I can get cutters or templates for fondant cut outs for the animals in the cake with the kangaroo?

Hi Tracy – It appears that the templates were handmade with fondant. The cookie cutouts I’ve seen are similar – but not the same. There are a lot of cute ones out there though on etsy – you may find something you like!

Safari Baby Shower Ideas: Planning a Safari-Themed Celebration

Planning a baby shower can be almost as exciting as the execution! There are many ideas, and when following a Safari Baby Shower theme, the number of animals and colors that can be included is nearly endless. From decorations to gifts, food, and activities, there are so many Safari Baby Shower ideas to choose from.

With many options available there are sure to be many opportunities to choose from alternatives for decorations, foods, and activities that will fit an elegant party, a kid or family-friendly party, or a lighthearted gathering. The expecting mother is sure to appreciate all of the efforts and will remember her Safari baby shower with fondness as they watch the child grow.

Safari Baby Shower Ideas – Decorations

safari baby pinterest

Safari Baby Shower decorations really begin with what invitations you choose, as these will set the tone for the guests right from the start. For a safari themed Baby Shower choose invitations that are in green, tan, and natural colours. Safari invitations can be matched to balloons, banners, and much more.

Banners are a great way to share joy and greet people as they enter. Choose one that has baby animals on it, real or cartoon, and announce “congratulations”, or “welcome” or even that has the baby’s name and the month that they are due. Banners can be all one piece or they can be created with a string of flags, letters, or balloons.

Place settings add to the theme and help to create a cohesive appearance. Plates, napkins, and cups can all be themed. For a safari Baby Shower theme choose items that have images of animals on them, ideally baby animals for the baby shower. For added interest, cups can be located that are shaped like animals, for example, elephant cups with their trunk as the handle. These will please even the most serious party guests.

For easy and fun decorations, and even to use as a gift suggestion, use stuffed animals that are animals you would find on a safari, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, etc. They can be placed around the room and used as a game later, or they can be all piled in one space like a hammock or scene. Ask guests to bring a copy of their childhood favorites to add to the special occasion.

Small plastic toy animals are ideal for this theme and can be placed around the table or hidden as surprises around the entire space. They are also perfect for putting on top of cake or cupcakes.

safari baby pinterest

Use a tablecloth that is in the colors that match, a dark green or light green, tan, brown, or in animal print for added fun. The tablecloth will not only protect the surface of your table but add to the overall appeal of the space.

A safari theme backdrop can be used to make a great photography space. These can be as large or small as you want and can be hung on a wall inside or outside. Set up some props including animal masks, balloons, stuffed animals, and a camera to allow your guests to pose in front of it for both decoration and a fun activity to memorialize the event.

Safari gear, such as helmets, all-terrain vehicles, boots, and clothing can all be used to place around the room or even dress a scarecrow for added interest.

Balloons in the themed colors can be grouped near areas of interest such as the gift table, the snack table, and a guestbook to help guide visitors to all the areas that they should be sure to visit and can even mark the way to the bathroom for those guests who are not familiar with the home.

Leaves, palm trees, and sand are all associated with safari and can be added to the theme. Stand some fake palm trees around the space, and add some other large-leafed trees, real or artificial, to create a full safari immersion feeling. Bringing in elements of the environment can help people to settle into the theme and enjoy it even more.

A safari themed balloon arch is a great way to create a focus in the room and when made with dark green light green, browns, and other neutral and calm tones will fit the theme and feel of your Safari baby shower. Place it around the space for gift opening or where the guest of honor will sit, or use it to frame a space for photographs, surround a framed picture of the sonogram, or bring attention to any other part of the experience.

Print and hang pictures of animals on safari. These can be blown up for larger spaces, or printed smaller to put on place cards, or labelled food. Choose images that are cute, funny, silly, or include baby animals to match the theme the best.

Balloon animals are ideal for decorating a safari baby shower. These can be placed strategically around the room or along with other balloon arrangements to add visual interest, and people are certain to remember the baby shower with the balloon animals.

Goodie bags, or baby shower favors , are another way to tie the theme together and show your guests that you appreciate their attendance. Animal keychains, safari animal stickers to seal bags of candy or animal cracker treats, books about someone who went on safari, and the bags or boxes themselves being animal prints or having an image of animals on them are all a great fit for this theme.

Use wooden blocks with animals painted on them to create staggered presentations for snacks, drinks, and other decorations.

safari baby shower decor

Add animal prints around the space. A zebra print throw blanket, cheetah print throw pillows, fake fur rugs, and even curtains and tablecloths can all be sourced in assorted animal prints.

Add streamers to the doorways, link balloons, and drape the tables to add additional color and detail.

Confetti can be spread around the table to add fun to the decorations and add a pop of color to any space.

Safari Baby Shower Food Ideas

Desserts are always a focus when food is involved, and sand can be a great starting point. Use ground graham crackers to create a sand base and add gummy animals to the “sand” all over a pudding for a great snack that everyone is sure to enjoy regardless of age.

Make your drinks exotic by using flavors related to a safari experience. Sparkling water is easy to flavor and safe for all ages, even the guest of honor, and can be created in pineapple, coconut pineapple, grapefruit, and many other varieties. Serve in champagne glasses for an elegant feel or place out small bottles of flavored water.

safari baby pinterest

Serve cupcakes with green icing to mimic the plains and add a small plastic safari animal on top. Alternatively, an image of an animal placed as a flag on the top is easily added to either homemade or store-bought cupcakes.

Read about how to make an amazing Baby Shower dessert table here.

Have a Safari themed cake made that has a dessert or oasis theme and use it as a centerpiece for the dessert or food table. This will delight the guests and create a lasting memory of the event.

safari baby pinterest

Donuts can be lined up, standing against each other, and topped with green paper or toppers to look like pineapples. A matching taste profile adds to the appeal.

Fruit salads can add a light and flavorful option for a snack table.

Choose cupcake toppers, either from fondant, modeling chocolate, or printed images to place on top of plain cupcakes for easy dessert.

A punch with fruit floating on top can be used to create a watering hole, allowing people to stop by and pour a drink.

Cake pops covered with animal prints are sure to delight.

A veggie tray can mimic the food choices of the herbivores on safari and can be arranged to look like animals with a carrot mane, raisins for eyes, or bread as an elephant’s trunk. There are many creative ways to organize vegetables and other foods to look like animals.

Kebabs are a fun and easy way to enjoy snacks during a baby shower or other gathering. Chicken or other meats can be used along with vegetables or other savory items, while fruit kebabs with pineapple, grapes, berries, and more can add a pop of color to the table and let people snack as they socialize.

Animal Crackers can be placed in ground graham cracker base to appear as though they are walking across the sand, or in pudding for a mixture of textures.

What to bring to a Safari Baby Shower?

safari baby pinterest

  • Request stuffed animals as a gift, and you can create your own safari experience for the baby as it grows.
  • Clothes that are safari themed or have animals on them can fit the theme well.
  • Decoration or images, pictures, framed posters, and other decorative items are wonderful gifts for building a nursery.
  • Gifts for guests can also be safari themed including small bags of candies with safari anima stickers holding them closed.
  • Plastic or even robotic animals are great gifts for a safari-themed baby shower and can help the baby to learn about animals as they grow.
  • Books on animals, safaris, and baby animals are all great gifts for any shower.

Safari Themed Baby Shower Games

  • Create an animal safari by setting up stuffed animals around the room and putting up cards with basic information on each animal.
  • Build a photo booth with a cut-out where the face would be, allowing guests to take pictures of themselves as those animals.
  • Create a scavenger hunt with stuffed or plastic animals around the room and have guests find them all and check them off.
  • Play a trivia game based on basic facts about the animals you see on safari.
  • Fill a jar with small plastic elephants or giraffes and have people guess how many are in the jar.
  • Create a bingo card using safari animals and plants.
  • Rent animal costumes and have a race to see who can get dressed as an animal the fastest.
  • Face painters can paint all the guest faces as different animals to bring some whimsy and light fun to the event.
  • Pin the tail on the tiger.
  • Fill a tub with sand and place toys within, then blindfold participants and have them search through the sand to find the animal toys. The first to find a certain number can win.
  • Enjoy a wordplay game taking characteristics of safari animals and applying them to children. For example how they walk when they are first learning, how joeys ride with their mother, lions roar when they want something, and see who can come up with the best comparisons or puns.
  • Play animal sounds and see who can name the animal the fastest.

Safari Themed Baby Shower Final Note

When planning a baby shower there are many things to consider. Once the theme is determined it can be easier to piece together the event and choose food, activities, and decorations that will match. A safari is full of new foliage, expansive views, and animals that some may never see in zoos. By incorporating each of these aspects into the planning a fun and whimsical experience that will bring joy to all those in attendance.

Many of the decorations and games are easy to find and the food can be made in ways that are budget-friendly and easy to execute. A safari-themed baby shower is sure to impress all of the guests and can even help them to choose what gifts to choose or how to wrap them. Be sure to take plenty of photos, or have everyone send the pictures they take to one online photo album to share the memories and keep them for years to come.

13 of the Cutest Baby Animals to See on Safari

By Jennifer Dombrowski 44 Comments

The Serengeti is a safari destination that is a magnificent experience any time of the year, but it’s in February when nearly all of the animals have babies. Between the Great Migration on the Serengeti Plains and all the adorable babies, a luxury safari in Tanzania with SkySafari by Elewana is a bucket list trip that will definitely top the list of best trips you’ve ever been on. We’ve seen things on safari that put the circle of life into perspective like hyenas hunting wildebeest, lions feasting on their morning kill and an elephant that died from a wound likely inflicted by poachers. While those things are a sad reality, we’ve also seen the cutest baby animals that just absolutely melt your heart. There are 13 of the cutest baby animals to see on safari:

Three lion cubs hide in the grass and branches in the Serengeti

1. Lion cubs

Lionesses will give birth to a litter of one – four cubs and we were lucky to find this litter of four (though you can only spot three in the photo).

A herd of elephants gathers closely around a very young calf in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

2. Elephant calf

Elephants only get pregnant once about every five years and the gestation period is 22 months. Elephant calves are quite small! Our guides estimated this cutie was around eight or nine months old.

A very young giraffe calf only a few weeks old stands under the tree alone in Serengeti National Park

3. Giraffe calf

Giraffe calves are born already around six feet tall! Though after seeing full grown giraffes, it’s pretty easy to spot a youngster even when they’re on their own. Sadly, we learned that giraffes aren’t very good parents and will leave their babies own their own while traveling several kilometers away.

A baboon infant sits in his mother's lap in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

4. Baboon infant

Baboon infants hang on to their mother’s stomach for the first month and then at five or six weeks old, start riding on their mother’s back. This cute little fella (boy parts definitely indicated he was a fella) was less than a month old! We were lucky to spot him playing very close to the road, though he scampered over to hold on to mom as soon as we stopped.

Two adult wildebeest train a wildebeest calf to run in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

5. Wildebeest calf

Wildebeest calves can stand within just a few minutes of being born and can run with the herd within an hour after birth. We saw a few young calves as the Great Migration moved from the Serengeti Plains south to Ngorongoro Crater, where the wildebeest will birth their calves in the short grass plains.

A Cape buffalo calf stands with a large herd of Cape buffalo in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

6. Cape buffalo calf

Cape buffalo calves are completely dependent on their mothers for their first year. The females will stay with and join the natural herd. We saw mostly male herds, but did spot some calves in a female herd we came across.

A baby hippo stands on a bank near its mother in a hippo pool in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

7. Hippo calf

Hippo calves are born in the water and can hold their breath for nearly three times as long as an adult hippo. Hippos spend around 16 hours each day in the water, so babies are a little hard to spot. We got lucky to spot a baby out of the water at Ngorongoro Crater.

A warthog with four piglets in the grass in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

8. Warthog piglet

Warthog moms only have four teats and piglets each suckle from their “own”. No sharing! When warthogs run, their tail sticks straight up and the piglets run in a line behind mom. Though I hope they weren’t running from a predator, they are too cute in running mode.

A young brown, fuzzy zebra foal stands very close to its mother in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

9. Zebra foal

Zebra foals are actually born brown and white and with a thicker coat. They look fuzzy, which makes them all the more adorable. Like wildebeest, zebras have their babies just before the long rains begin in February. We saw quite a few baby zebras at Ngorongoro Crater.

A young Thompson gazelle stands near its mother while she feeds on grass in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

10. Thompson gazelle fawn

Thompson gazelles are really small with an adult standing at only around 2 – 3 feet tall. Females move away from the herd to birth a single fawn and the fawn will spend most of its time resting and hiding in the grass. It’s not very common to spot a fawn, so we were particularly lucky to see this little fawn with its mom on the short grass plains at Ngorongoro Crater during the Great Migration.

Four baby hyrax snuggle around their mom in Serengeti National Park

Hyrax live in families of up to 50 and are sort of look like a rabbit without long ears and cotton tails that can climb. The babies all snuggle up with mom when they nap and we were quite amused watching the resident hyrax families at Serengeti Migration Camp.

A crocodile hatchling sits on a river bank near an adult in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

12. Crocodile hatchling

Crocodiles lay around 50 eggs and bury them in the sand on the riverbank. Of the 50 eggs, only one or two hatchlings actually survive. This little guy was sunning himself right next to mom in the Serengeti.

A vervet monkey infant hugs its mother in a tree in Tarangire National Park

13. Monkey infant

Like baboons, monkey infants clutch their arms around mom and hitch a ride on their belly. Because the mom and dad are so protective of their youngsters, baby monkeys can be hard to spot. Like all kids, they like to play and you might spot them chasing each other around. As soon as the parents spot you watching though, they grab up their babies and hold on to them protectively.

Though it was going into the long rains when we were there, we had pretty good weather and it was the perfect time of the year to see the babies. So cute to watch!

This was just about the cutest post ever!!! Love all the babies. So jealous of you guys 🙂

February 27, 2014 at 11:20 AM

Thanks Lauren! At first we were just shooting the babies, but then we specifically started trying to capture a mom and wee one. Just so much cuteness!

February 25, 2014 at 3:57 PM

After getting hit with one Polar Vortex after another in the U.S, it’s nice to see signs of Spring with all the young animals being born. Nice photos.

February 27, 2014 at 11:21 AM

Even though we were just a few degrees below the Equator, it was definitely a different season there in Tanzania! Kind of disappointing to come back home to the winter rain in Italy after getting a taste of “Spring”.

When I went on safari in Selous Tanzania for honeymoon, the lion cubs were playing hide and seek so I’d love to try and catch them next time – I absolutely loved baby hippos though – so cute!

February 27, 2014 at 11:23 AM

What a fantastic place to go on honeymoon Shikha! Lions don’t have a specific time of the year that they breed, so you have a pretty good chance of seeing lion cubs any time of the year. Hope you spot some on your next safari!

February 25, 2014 at 4:45 PM

Even the baby croc is cute!

February 27, 2014 at 11:25 AM

I still wouldn’t mess with even the baby croc. We’ve got a close up and it already has some lethal looking teeth.

Adam Evans says

February 25, 2014 at 5:34 PM

I love the zebra and foal. Interesting to see the foal has a kind of ginger hue!

February 27, 2014 at 11:27 AM

We were surprised that baby zebras are so brown too. Very cute. The coat almost looks like a thick fuzz or velvet.

Katherine Belarmino says

That giraffe baby is ridiculous!!

February 27, 2014 at 11:29 AM

Isn’t it so cute? It’s parents were no where around. I can only hope it survives on its own.

February 26, 2014 at 12:24 AM

Wow, that’s impressive you did get all the big ones and small ones to…what a fun trip, must have taken lots of great images to share!

We averaged anywhere from 600 – 1000 photos each day. I think I could post a safari photo a day for the next year!

February 26, 2014 at 1:29 AM

Those are so cute! The babies look like miniature versions of the adult ones. I really like the zebra and the lion cubs, although they are all very adorable 🙂 Your photos are very impressive!

February 27, 2014 at 11:38 AM

That baby elephant had to be the happiest elephant I’ve ever seen! Elephants were definitely a favorite to watch, especially when they play in water holes. We’ll have a post coming on a herd having some serious fun in a water hole.

February 27, 2014 at 11:42 AM

The babies are just too cute to watch! Even the baboon baby melted my heart. I had a bad experience with baboons at the zoo when I was a kid, so don’t really like them.

February 26, 2014 at 8:43 PM

ohhhh yes, they’re really cute 🙂 I’m happy you had such a great time!

February 27, 2014 at 11:43 AM

February 27, 2014 at 4:40 AM

Oh Mahh gahhd. All of them. Yes please. Can’t wait to do a safari. Not on this RTW trip but the next for sure. Thanks for sharing.

You will love it when you do go on safari, Shaun! This was one of our all time favorite trips.

How To Make the Most of 24 Hours in Moscow in Winter

Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is a key sight to visit on a trip to the Russian capital

Moscow is a city of contrasts, and in 24 hours, you’ll see a lot of sides to the Russian capital. If you’re brave enough to head to the world’s most northerly megacity in winter, you’ll be rewarded with outstanding comfort food, breathtaking architecture and a glimpse into Soviet history.

Have breakfast like a Russian writer

Start your day with a wander through the café-lined streets of Patriarch’s Ponds (Patriarshie Prudy), the setting of the famous opening scene of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita and the perfect place to find a cosy breakfast spot. Mari Vanna is second to none for a traditional Russian breakfast in a homely atmosphere, complete with a resident cat. Try the oladyi (fluffy little pancakes) with condensed milk, or the syrniki (pancakes made from cottage cheese and raisins) with sour cream. Reservations are recommended.

Syrniki (cottage-cheese pancakes) are a Russian breakfast classic

After breakfast, take the metro one stop from Tverskaya to Teatralnaya station to reach the heart of the city. The Moscow Metro , or Stalin’s ‘Palace for the People’, is decidedly the world’s most opulent. At Teatralnaya, spot the porcelain reliefs depicting traditional dress from across the USSR; the adjoining Ploshchad Revolyutsii station’s life-size statues show the participants of the Bolshevik Revolution (if you can find the dog, it’s said that rubbing his nose brings good luck).

No visit to Moscow is complete without seeing Red Square, home to the Kremlin and the iconic St Basil’s Cathedral, built in the 16th century under orders from Ivan the Terrible. Legend has it that after it was built, Ivan blinded the architect who made it so he could never build a more beautiful building. True or not, it’s undoubtedly one of a kind, even among Russia’s many eclectic churches, with its distinctive patterned and brightly coloured domes.

St Basil’s Cathedral has pride of place on Red Square

By the walls of the Kremlin, you’ll find Lenin’s Mausoleum where his body has been preserved since his death in 1924 (bar a few brief periods during wartime). While you’ll only be allowed a cursory visit, it’s an eerie historical relic to tick off the bucket list. An altogether cheerier way to spend the time could be skating on the seasonal rink that takes up residence each year next to the glittering lights of GUM, Moscow’s upmarket 19th-century shopping centre.

Take a walk in nearby Kitay-Gorod, one of Moscow’s oldest areas, where you’ll find icons of Tsarist Russia, such as the famous Bolshoi Theatre and the Hotel Metropol, the hotel of choice of foreign visitors from John Steinbeck to Mao Zedong. Decked out in a sea of Christmas lights, the newly pedestrianised Nikolskaya Street is one of the city’s top shopping streets.

Nikolskaya Street is one of Moscow’s shopping hotspots

Refuel on Soviet-style dumplings

After a chilly morning of sightseeing, head to Varenichnaya No 1 on Nikolskaya Street for the perfect carb-filled antidote to the winter cold. Ravioli-like dumplings from across the former USSR are the order of the day. Try traditional flavours such as mushroom, cabbage or cheese, and even sweet variants like chocolate and raspberry (but maybe not all at the same time), all topped with lashings of butter and Russia’s beloved smetana (sour cream). The nostalgic Soviet-inspired decor is packed with old books and trinkets, so it’s almost a museum trip in itself.

Stroll by the frozen river

Walk or take the metro to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (metro: Kropotkinskaya), a site symbolic of Russia’s turbulent history . While you can find pre-revolutionary photographs of this opulent cathedral, this version is a replica. The original church was destroyed in 1931 to make way for the sci-fi-esque Palace of the Soviets, which would have been, at the time, the world’s tallest building. However, war efforts stopped its construction, and for many years, the site served as a huge open-air swimming pool. In the late 1990s, the cathedral was rebuilt, and in 2012, Pussy Riot staged a performance here that landed them in jail. From Kropotkinskaya, take the metro one stop farther south for a quick look at the palatial Park Kultury station, decked out with marble and chandeliers.

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour stands on the northern bank of the Moskva River

If you’re up for a walk, head to Sparrow Hills for panoramic views of the city (otherwise, shelter from the cold while admiring the Tretyakov Gallery’s comprehensive collection of Russian art). Take the red line onwards to Vorobyovy Gory station, and head down into the park to pick a path to meander up to the top of the hill.

At the top, you’ll have views over the whole city, while behind you is the imposing Moscow State University. One of Stalin’s iconic ‘Seven Sisters’ buildings, it was the tallest building in Europe until 1990, and its 33 kilometres (20.5 miles) of corridors house everything from a pool to a police station and a bomb shelter. See how many other ‘sisters’ you can spot – their monumental style is instantly recognisable.

Go skating in Gorky Park

Wander back down to the river and turn right for a scenic walk that will take you to Gorky Park. As the country’s first major public space, this was a Soviet project for the cities of the future – a place where everyone could relax and do sports. Ever a mirror of its time, after some bad years in the ’90s, it is once again a star attraction, with a rolling programme of concerts and festivals and a plethora of slick restaurants and cafés. In winter, it transforms into a lantern-lit maze of skateable rinks and paths and is the perfect place to curl up with some glintveyn (mulled wine) and some medovik (honey cake) and marvel at the sub-zero temperatures.

Skating in Gorky Park is a popular winter activity

Sample Georgian cuisine

Moscow is one of the best places outside Georgia to get your hands on Georgian food , which makes a colourful and spicy contrast to Russia’s traditional fare. Khachapuri (14 Shabolovka Street), named after the tangy cheese bread that is a staple of Georgian cuisine, has a modern vibe and serves up tasty khachapuri , khinkali dumplings and vibrant Georgian mezze, to name a few. Wash it all down with a carafe of Georgian wine.

Khinkali (traditional dumplings) and Adjarian khachapuri are must-try Georgian dishes

Drink vodka the Russian way

One of Russia’s most famous exports, vodka , is the drink of choice for celebrations. For the best experience, vodka should be kept in the freezer and served in ice-cold glasses. But be warned: a typical serving of vodka is a full 50 millilitres. To take the edge off, have a salty snack or some Russian rye bread. You can find a good selection of vodkas in most bars, but if you’re after a classier experience, try Oblomov near Dobryninskaya metro. It will remind you of a Tsarist-era country estate and offers upmarket vodkas as well as lesser-known Russian spirits in flavours from buckwheat to horseradish.

Party in an old chocolate factory

Situated right on the Moskva River, the former Red October chocolate factory now houses the Strelka Institute design school and is a prime hotspot for arty hang-outs. The Strelka Bar has a wide range of cocktails using fresh local ingredients and at prices below the going rate for such a central spot, with stunning views of the river. The nearby Gipsy nightclub boasts a huge dance floor and an eclectic soundtrack that should keep you dancing well into the night.

Strelka Bar offers views over the Moskva River

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

safari baby pinterest

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
