Getting Google Play on your iPhone might seem like an impossible task, but it’s actually quite simple! You can access Google Play content by using the web browser on your iPhone or by downloading specific Google apps from the App Store. Let’s dive into the specifics so you can start enjoying Google Play on your iPhone in no time.

Step by Step Tutorial: How to Get Google Play on iPhone

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s clarify that you won’t be able to directly install the Google Play Store on an iPhone. However, you can access Google Play content in other ways. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Safari or any other web browser on your iPhone.

Open your web browser of choice on your iPhone.

By doing this, you’ll be able to access the Google Play website, where you can browse and purchase content. Just remember that you won’t be able to download apps or games directly onto your iPhone this way.

Step 2: Go to the Google Play website.

Type in play.google.com in the address bar and hit enter.

Once you’re on the Google Play website, you can log in with your Google account to access your previously purchased content or buy new books, movies, and music.

Step 3: Download Google Apps from the App Store.

Open the App Store and search for Google apps like Google Play Music, Google Play Books, or Google Play Movies & TV.

These apps will allow you to access the respective content from Google Play. This means you can listen to music, read books, or watch movies that you’ve bought from Google Play.

Step 4: Sign in with your Google account.

After downloading the Google apps, open them and sign in with your Google account.

This step is crucial as it syncs your Google Play purchases with the app on your iPhone. That way, you can access all the content you’ve paid for.

Step 5: Enjoy your Google Play content on your iPhone.

Now that you’re signed in, you can start enjoying your Google Play books, movies, or music right on your iPhone!

Although you can’t download apps and games, you can still access a wide range of entertainment options that you’ve purchased through Google Play.

After completing these steps, you’ll be able to view and enjoy your Google Play content on your iPhone. Remember that while you can’t download apps or games, you can still enjoy other types of content like books, music, and movies.

Tips: Making the Most of Google Play on iPhone

  • Make sure you’re logged into the same Google account on both the Google Play website and the Google apps on your iPhone.

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

Can You Install the Safari Browser on Android?

There's no official Safari app for Android, but there are copycats

  • Switching from iOS

There is no official Safari for Android app, but there are lots of knockoffs in the wild, many of which are scamware. We don't recommend downloading any app that's masquerading as Safari for Android because there are plenty of other well-rated mobile browsers available.

Should You Install Safari on an Android?

The Safari web browser offers tons of features that make surfing the web easier, and it's usually considered superior to other browsers in terms of security, unfortunately, you're not going to find a version of Safari for Android that's sanctioned by Apple. That's because while there are plenty of 'Safari' browsers out there, none of them were created by Apple.

So, the question becomes, should you install one of these Safari files and hope for the best? Probably not, and there are a few reasons for that:

  • Many of the apps that are calling themselves 'Safari for Android' are nothing more than scamware—bits of high-demand software designed to deliver viruses and malware to unsuspecting users.
  • Even 'Safari' apps that are generally considered safe are not from Apple, therefore can have different features and capabilities than the Safari browser you may be used to using on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

It's because of this Lifewire recommends you don't download 'Safari for Android.' At best, you're likely to be disappointed by the browser you download, at worse, it could deliver malware to your device that requires loads of time to repair, or worse, it turns your phone into a useless brick.

There are many YouTube videos available that include links to a 'Safari' download file for iOS. There are even versions of Safari APKs available. None of these files are to be trusted. To be clear, there is no official version of Safari Browser for Android . And you should not download Android apps from sites that are unfamiliar. Google Play is always the safest resource for apps.

Alternatives to Safari for Android

So, since there is no Safari for Android, what are your options? There are plenty of Safari-like browsers available. For example, some of the highest rated options include:

  • Opera Browser : Opera is another super fast browser, but it also includes a free VPN that users find useful for getting around geofenced content. It also has a pop-up blocker, but does lack some importing and searching capabilities of other browsers.
  • DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser : Targeting users who are tired of their every move being tracked online, the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser offers all the features you would expect from a Safari-like browser: speed, security, and privacy. However, customization seems limited, so if you're looking for something that's highly customizable, this might not be the right browser for you.

Although none of these offers all the features of a Safari browser, each has its own strengths, and if you're ready to move away from Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge, then they're worth your time to try them out. And since they're all free, you're not going to spend anything but time trying to find a Safari-like browser that suits you.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari google play

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari google play

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

How to install the google play store on an amazon fire tablet.

You're not stuck with the Amazon App Store.

Read update

The instructions below have been tested and work with all Fire tablets, including the most recent devices running on FireOS 8.3.2.3, based on Android 11.

Quick Links

Download the play store files, install the play store, if you're using a fire 7 2022 (12th gen) or newer, sign in to the play store, key takeaways.

  • To install the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire Tablet, you must download the Google Play Store app and its dependencies from a trusted website like APKMirror.com and install them manually. Google doesn't officially offer the Play Store on Fire tablets, but it does work well.

Amazon Fire Tablets restrict you to the Amazon Appstore, but they run Fire OS, a custom version of Android. That means you can install Google's Play Store to gain access to millions of Android apps and games, including Google apps like Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps, and more.

The best part of installing the Play Store on your Fire Tablet is that it doesn't require any in-depth "hacking" like rooting or running scripts from a PC. It's just a matter of downloading and installing a few APK files from the tablet itself, and you'll be up and running with the Play Store just like your regular Android phone or tablet ! Let's get started.

UPDATE: 4/25/24

Remove the microSD card if you have one inserted in the tablet. If you don't do this, it's possible you could lose data during the Play Store install process. You can put it back once we're done.

Before we begin, make sure your Fire Tablet is from 2014 or later. This process may not work with old Kindle Fire tablets as you need to enable "Apps From Unknown Sources."

First, open the "Settings" app from the "Home" tab on the home screen.

Now go to "Security & Privacy."

Select "Apps From Unknown Sources."

Find "Silk Browser" and then toggle on "Allow From This Source." This is what will allow us to install an app from outside of the Amazon app store.

With that out of the way, we can start downloading the Play Store files. There are four APK files we will need to get the Play Store up and running, and they're specific to your Fire Tablet.

To find out which Amazon Fire Tablet model you have, go to Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet. You'll see your "Device Model" name here. To see your Fire OS version, go to Settings > Device Options > System Updates.

With the device model in mind, we can download the appropriate files below. Simply copy and paste the links from the tables below into the Silk Browser on your Amazon Fire tablet. We're just downloading the files at this point, don't open them yet .

APK Mirror is a trusted source for downloading APK files. However, some of the ads on APK Mirror are deceptive. Look for the "Download APK" button (shown below) that has a file size. The color of the button will match the app's icon. You should also see a "Verified safe to install" message near the button.

Google Account Manager

Ignore the message about a newer version being available.

Google Services Framework

Google play services.

On the page for your model, select the most recent version of the APK (not "Bundle") that is not a "beta."

Google Play Store

Make sure you are downloading an "APK," not a "Bundle."

With all the downloaded APK files to your Amazon Fire Tablet, we can begin installing them one by one. Open the "Files" app from the home screen.

Select "Downloads" from the side menu and switch to the list view for the files. You should see the four files we just downloaded.

It's important to install these APKs in a specific order. For each APK, follow this process: Tap the file > select "Continue" > tap the "Install" button. After it installs, tap "Done." Don't open the Play Store yet.

Install the files in this order (the file names on your device will be longer):

  • com.google.android.gsf.login
  • com.google.android.gsf
  • com.google.android.gms
  • com.android.vending

With all the APKs installed, it's time to reboot the tablet. Hold down the power button and select "Restart."

If you're using the Fire 7 2022 (12th Gen) or a newer Fire tablet running FireOS 8, you may need to manually grant permissions before using the Play Store. Tap and hold the Play Store icon and select "App Info."

In our most recent testing, it was not necessary to manually grant permissions on the Fire 7 2022 (running FireOS 8.3.2.3. However, if you run into issues, we've retained the instructions below for you to try.

From the App Info page, select "Permissions."

Select both "Phone" and "SMS" and switch them to "Allow." You can now proceed with the rest of the tutorial.

After following the above instructions, open the Play Store from the home screen and sign in with your Google account. Once you're signed in, you'll have a functional Google Play Store, just like on any other Android device. Go forth and download Telegram, Chrome, Gmail, and any other app you can't find in the Amazon Appstore .

It's possible that future Fire OS updates may break the functionality of the Play Store. If that happens, we suggest going through the entire install process again and checking if newer APK files are available. If all else fails, you can reset your Fire tablet and start over.

You may experience some problems when trying to use the Play Store right away. The Play Store and Google Play Services will automatically update themselves in the background, so just give it some time. This may take as much as ten minutes.

How to Install the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire Tablet

Amazon Fire 10 HD Plus tablet computer on a pink backdrop

For the money, most Android tablets aren't very smart buys. At the high end, hardware is marred by less than stellar software offerings. (If you're going to spend $500 on a tablet, get an iPad .) At the low end, Amazon's Android-powered Fire tablets are hamstrung by the very limited Amazon Appstore , which doesn't include Google apps, among others.

Android tablets are finally getting a boost , but what if you could buy a Fire Tablet for $60 (as you generally can during Amazon Prime Day ) and install the Google Play Store? A $60 tablet that's capable of 95 percent of what a $330 iPad can do is a pretty good deal. In this how-to, we'll show you how to get Google Play running on your Amazon Fire Tablet.

Updated February 2023: We've noted that these instructions do not work with the 2022 models of the Fire HD 7 and HD 8 tablets until you have the latest version of Fire OS installed. We've also added a section on more advanced Fire tablet hacks.

The good news is that installing the Play Store on a Fire Tablet doesn't require any hacking or “rooting,” or doing anything from your PC. The easiest method is to just download the needed files and install them. That said, read through this entire guide and make sure you understand each step before you get going.

There are a few limitations you should know about.

  • Some apps can't be installed : Yes, you'll have the Play Store installed, but that doesn't mean every app will be available or work properly. For example, anything that relies on GPS data is out of luck, and some apps are excluded because Fire tablets are not SafetyNet-certified by Google.
  • Some Play Store apps don't work with Amazon Kids+ : I have not installed the Google Play Store on a Fire Tablet Kids Edition yet, but reports from around the web suggest that some apps might not work with Amazon's Kids+ subscription service .
  • Google Family Link doesn't work : Despite the presence of the Google Play Store, you will not be able to manage your Fire tablet through Google Family Link , which enables some parental controls. This, combined with the above issue, leads me to suggest you don't install the Google Play Store on a device intended for your child.

There are two things you need to do before diving in.

  • Remove the SD card : The process of installing the Google Play Store can wipe your SD card, so pull it out if you have one. You can put it back in when you're done.
  • Make sure you have a 7th-generation or newer Fire Tablet. You can find out which model you have by going to Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet . It should say something like Fire HD 8 (10th Generation) .

These instructions are intended to be used on the Fire HD 7, Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets , 7th generation or newer. Finally, realize that you are stepping off the official path here. That doesn't mean you're going to break anything or fall victim to some scam, but if anything does go wrong, it's going to be up to you to solve it. Feel free to post a comment below if you're having trouble.

This will not work on Amazon's 2022 Fire HD 7 and Fire HD 8 tablets unless you have Fire OS 8.3.1.3 installed. My Amazon review units came with Fire OS 8.3.1.2 installed, and while everything below works, I have not been able to actually install apps from the Google Play Store. Users on Reddit have had the same experience, but a few have found that once you get the update to Fire OS 8.3.1.3, the Google Play Store starts working . Unfortunately Amazon pushes out these updates somewhat randomly, and I do not yet have a device running Fire 8.3.1.3 to test with.

Screenshot of Amazon app warning of unknown source

To get Google Play up and running, you need to install four APK (Android Package) files. APK refers to the file extension, which is .apk. All Android apps are packaged as .apk files. The various app stores hide this part from you. But when you click Install in an app store, what's actually happening is that you're downloading an .apk file. You can use Amazon's Silk web browser to download these files, but by default, Silk can't install .apk files.

To change that, head to the Settings app, select Security & Privacy > Apps From Unknown Sources > Silk Browser . Then toggle the “allow” option. Once that's done, you're ready to download files.

We need to download four applications to get the Google Play Store working: Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework, Google Play Service, and Google Play Store. The first three are frameworks that the last one—the Play Store app—needs to function, so they need to be installed first.

Here's where it gets a little complicated. Different Fire tablets run different versions of Android, so the files you need to install vary according to which Fire tablet you have. You can find out which tablet you have at: Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet .

You will be downloading all of these files from APKMirror.com . APKMirror is owned by Illogical Robot LLC, which also owns the Android-focused news site Android Police . Once these apps are installed, they will be updated and managed by the Google Play Store, downloading directly from Google's services. All of which is to say, this process is relatively safe.

Here are the apps you need with links to download them. Just download them for now, don't open them .

  • 8th-generation and newer Fire tablets : Google Account Manager v7.1.2
  • 7th-generation and older : Google Account Manager 5.1

This one is a little more complex, since it depends on which version of Fire OS you're running. You can find out by checking on your Fire: Settings > Device Options > System Updates .

  • Devices running Fire OS 7 need to download the Google Services Framework v9-4832352 . This includes all 9th- and 10th-generation Fire HD 10 tablets, all 9th- and 10th-generation Fire HD 8 tablets, as well as some 8th-generation Fire HD 8 tablets. This is why it's important to check and see which version of Fire OS you're running.
  • Devices running Fire OS 6 need to download the Google Services Framework v7.1.2 . The compatible devices here are mostly the early versions of the 8th-generation Fire HD 8.
  • Fire HD 10 9th- and 11th-generation and Fire HD 8 10th-generation : Download the file labeled Google Play Services (64-bit ARM, nodpi, Android 9.0+) . Note: Look for the first file not labeled beta. You'll need to click on the Variants text below the file and search for the version we mentioned above.
  • Fire HD 8 8th-generation : Download the file labeled Google Play Services (64-bit ARM, nodpi, Android 6.0+) . Note: Don't download the beta versions listed on this page. Look for the first file not labeled beta. You'll need to click on the Variants text below the file and search for the version we mentioned above.
  • All Fire Tablets : Google Play Store (universal, nodpi)

Whew, OK, you have all the files we need. Verify that they were all successfully downloaded by opening the Docs app and selecting Downloads . You should see all four files there. (It's easier to see the full names if you switch to list view.)

Now you need to install the apps. This must be done in the correct order . When you are done, do not press open . We need to reboot before you use the Play Store. The order of installation by downloaded file name is:

  • com.google.gsf.login
  • com.google.android.gsf
  • com.google.android.gms
  • com.android.vending

Once you've installed all four apps, it's time to restart your Fire tablet. Press down on the power button until the Power menu comes up, then tap Restart .

Once your Fire tablet has restarted, you should be able to open the Google Play Store, sign in to your Google Account, and start downloading apps. Again, not everything works, but there's certainly a larger selection than what you get in Amazon's Appstore.

If you want a more stock Android experience, you can install a custom launcher , which will let you hide all the Amazon apps you don't need. I like Nova Launcher , but there are many others available.

Assuming you are done installing the APKs from unknown sources, it's a good idea to go back and turn that option off. It's in Settings > Security & Privacy. Toggle off the Apps From Unknown Sources option. It'll prevent you from accidentally downloading malicious software.

If you run into problems installing apps from the Play Store, try clearing the app data. Head to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications . Look through that list and find the Play Store. Tap to edit the settings. The first step is to tap Force Stop to shut down the Play Store. Next, tap Storage , then Clear Data (or Clear Storage , depending on which version of Fire OS you're running). Once that's done, restart your device and try logging in to the Play Store again.

If that doesn't work, you may want to punt: factory-reset and start over. However, be aware that a factory reset will erase all your data and files, not just the Google Play store, so make sure you have a good backup before you try that.

Amazon Fire HD 10

If you're comfortable using the command line you can go a step further and remove the Amazon software you don't want. To do that you need to install a piece of software called the Android Debug Bridge. This is Google's developer tool for interacting with an Android tablet from your PC, hence the name “Bridge.” You can grab the latest version of the Debug Bridge from Google . Once it's installed you can run Android commands on your Fire tablet, from your PC's terminal.

You'll need to enable debugging before you connect to your tablet. To do that head to Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet and then tap the serial number seven times. Now go back to Device Options and scroll down until you see a new menu item, Developer Options . Toggle Developer Options on and then scroll down the list of options below until you see USB Debugging and toggle that on as well.

You can now connect to your tablet with Android Debug Bridge, or adb. To do that open a terminal window and type adb devices . You should see a Fire device listed with the word “unauthorized” next to it. That's OK, just check your Fire tablet and you should see a notification asking if you want to allow the USB debugging. Tap Yes and go back to your PC and type adb devices again. Now instead of “unauthorized” after your device, it should say just “device.” You can now run commands from your PC.

Exactly which commands you want to run depends on what you want to turn off. The complete instructions for doing that are beyond the scope of this guide, but XDA developers, an Android developer community, has a pretty good list of apps and how to disable them . Amazon periodically renames some packages, so you may have to do a more detailed web search for your exact model to find the right names.

Finally, for those who'd like to try installing LineageOS , the open-source alternative to Android: I do not recommend it. Fire devices do not have unlockable bootloaders, and getting LineageOS installed is not for the faint of heart. Even if you pull it off, things rarely work 100 percent of the time, and you can still screw things up after the installation. I bricked an older Fire HD 8 running LineageOS (I tried to update the bootloader within LineageOS, which proved a mistake). There is also, as far as I'm aware, no version of LineageOS that fully supports Fire hardware. If you want to run LineageOS on a tablet, a Samsung slate is probably your best bet .

YouTube: How to listen to music and videos with your screen off

YouTube offers a large collection of streaming audio and video content. It would take 82 years to watch everything that's uploaded in one day. Yet, it's disappointing when music or a video stops when you minimize YouTube or lock your phone screen. Premium users don't have such an experience, as background playback is one of the perks.

If you aren't a Premium subscriber and want to play content like playlists and podcasts on your favorite Android tablet , try one of the workarounds in this article.

Google Podcasts is dead. Here's how to move your podcast feed to YouTube Music

Play youtube in the background on your web browser.

You can overcome the official YouTube app's prohibition on unpaid background playback by watching your video in your browser. Depending on your browser, the process is a little different.

Listen to YouTube with the screen off on Firefox:

1. Find the video you want to play in the YouTube app and tap the Share button.

2. Select Copy link .

3. Open your browser and paste the link into the address bar.

4. After the YouTube website loads, select the ⋮ icon in the lower-right corner.

5. Tap the Desktop site toggle from the menu to reload the site in desktop mode.

That's all there is to it. The video and the audio continue to play even when you turn off the screen or switch to another app.

How to use YouTube with the screen off on Chrome, Edge, Safari and most Chromium browsers

While Firefox is an outlier, the directions for using YouTube with your screen off are the same on most other browsers.

1. Find your video, copy the link, and paste the link into Chrome.

2. Tap the ⋮ icon in the upper-right corner, next to the address bar.

3. Scroll down and select Desktop site ( Request desktop site on your iPhone or iPad).

4. While the video is playing, lock the phone or return to your homescreen.

At this point, your video stops playing. On Android, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings menu. You'll see a widget with playback controls for your browser. Tap the play button to continue listening to your audio. On iOS, the Control Center has a playback widget. These widgets are also available from the lock screen.

Use third-party apps to play YouTube in the background

If you don't feel like loading a video into your mobile browser, several third-party apps play YouTube videos in the background, but they have a limited shelf life. Third-party YouTube apps tap into YouTube's API, and YouTube can revoke that permission at any time, rendering the app useless.

If you want to use Google Play Store apps, MusicTube is a solid choice. Background play works out of the box. However, you'll listen to the occasional ad on top of what YouTube serves you.

If you feel adventurous, try NewPipe. It's an open source YouTube client with most of the functionality of YouTube's app. Some downsides are that you can't log in to your account, you must familiarize yourself with APKs, and you'll work outside the Play Store ecosystem. The upside is that you get nice features that aren't available in the base YouTube experience, like background play, a pop-up video player, and an ad-free experience.

As of the publication date of this article, MusicTube and NewPipe work and are viable options.

Upgrade to YouTube Premium to play music in the background

The easiest way to play your YouTube videos in the background is to sign up for YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red). For $14 per month, you get an ad-free experience on YouTube, can download videos, have background playback, and will maximize YouTube Music .

A Premium subscription might not be a bad deal, depending on how you use YouTube. On the other hand, if you use it to listen to a podcast on your lunch break or play some music while you work out, it's not worth the price.

Get your stream on without your display on You now have enough information to play music during your workout without burning through your battery (and watch your data use if you're not using Wi-Fi). And if you're hungry for more YouTube tips, we have a compilation of the best YouTube features to start using today .

How to install the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire tablet

Peter Hunt Szpytek

The Amazon Fire lineup is filled with affordable Android tablets. Offering plenty of functionality without the price tag associated with products from Samsung or Lenovo, Amazon's home-grown family of tablets is an easy recommendation for frugal shoppers. There's a bit of caveat to the lineup, however, as none of them come preinstalled with the Google Play Store .

Allow apps from unknown sources

Know which amazon fire tablet you have, download the google play store, what you need.

Your Amazon Fire tablet

APK files for the Google Play Store

That means you won't have access to many of the great apps available on Google Play and will instead be limited to what's available on the Amazon App Store. And while Amazon does a lot of things well, its App Store leaves much to be desired. If you're looking to use the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire tablet, you'll need to deal with a clunky (but fairly simple) workaround. Here's the easiest way to download Google Play on your Fire tablet.

Because you aren't able to download the Google Play Store directly from the Amazon App Store, you'll need to download it from the internet. However, Amazon Fire devices have a built-in setting that blocks the download of apps from sources other than the Amazon App Store. Before downloading Google Play, you'll need to disable that setting. Here's how:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Amazon Fire device.

Step 2: Select the Security & Privacy tab.

  • Apple Music vs. Spotify: Which music streaming service is the best?
  • Save 53% on the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus tablet today
  • How to reverse image search on Android or iPhone

Step 3: In the Security & Privacy menu, select Apps from Unknown Sources .

Step 4: Select the Silk Browser option and then toggle the Allow from this source button.

Once you've enabled the ability to download apps from outside sources, you'll be ready to download the components necessary for running the Google Play Store. In order to do so, however, you'll need to know specifically what Amazon Fire tablet you're using. If you already know which model you have, skip this section, or follow along just to double check.

Step 1: Open the Settings app again, scroll down to the Device Options tab, and select it.

Step 2: Select the About Fire Tablet option.

Step 3: Check the information below the Device Model heading to learn which specific Amazon Fire model you're using.

With the knowledge of which Amazon Fire model you have, you'll be ready to download the four APKs necessary for running the Google Play Store. Take note that this process may wipe your microSD card if you're using one. Before downloading the following items, make sure to remove your microSD card from the slot just to be safe. Additionally, the APKs you'll be downloading are totally safe. However, the site that they're hosted on has a lot of misleading and potentially malicious ads that may try to confuse you into clicking on them. You should be able to avoid any issues as long as you only select the options listed below, so make sure that you're sticking to the steps closely.

Step 1: Open the Silk Browser app and navigate to this page so that you can tap on the links below.

Step 2: If you have the Fire 7 (8th, 9th, or 12th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (8th or 10th Generation), the Fire HD 10 (9th or 11th Generation), or the Fire Max 11, select this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Account Manager 7.1.2 (Android 6.0+)

If you have the Fire HD 6, the Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HDX 8.9, or the Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older), click on this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Account Manager 5.1-1743759 (Android 5.0+)

Step 3: After selecting the APK download prompt, exit the full-screen pop-up ad. You may get an additional pop-up from your Fire tablet that says the download may be harmful. Select Download anyway . Select this option every time you're prompted to in the following steps.

Step 4: Return to this page in the Silk Browser and click on this link if you have the Fire 7 (12th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (12th Generation), or the Fire Max 11, then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 10-6494331 (Android 10+)

If you have the Fire 7 (9th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (8th, 9th, or 10th Generation), or the Fire HD 10 (9th or 11th Generation), click this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 9-4832352 (Android 9.0+)

If you have the Fire HD 6 (any version), the Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HDX 8.9, or the Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older), click this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 5.1-1743759 (Android 5.1+)

Step 5: After selecting the red Download APK button, click out of the full page pop up ad and then select Download anyway .

Step 6: Return to this page using the Silk Browser and select the link below based on your Fire model. Be aware that when you click on the link, you won't be given a clear red Download APK button. Instead, you'll need to select the APK from a list of downloads. Find the APK that's closest to the top that doesn't say "beta" in its title, and select the download icon on the right side of the screen.

Fire 7 (12th Generation), Fire HD 8 (12th Generation), and Fire Max 11: Google Play Services (Android 11+)

Fire HD 8 (10th Generation) and Fire HD 10 (9th and 11th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 9.0+)

Fire 7 (9th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 6.0+)

Fire HD 8 (8th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 6.0+)

Fire HD 6, Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), Fire HDX 8.9, Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older): Google Play Services (Android 5.0+)

Step 7: Once you've selected your APK, scroll down and select the red Download APK button. Select Download anyway if you get the "Harmful file" pop-up.

Step 8: Once you've downloaded those three APKs, you'll only have one more item to download, which is universal across all Amazon Fire models. Return to this page with the Silk Browser and click on the link below. Like with the last step, select the APK that's closest to the top of the list that doesn't have the word "beta" in its file name.

Google Play Store

Step 9: After selecting the APK from the list, scroll down and select the blue Download APK button and then select the Download anyway option one final time.

Step 10: With those four downloads complete, you'll be ready to open the files and get the Google Play Store working on your Amazon Fire. Go to your home screen, open the Files app, and then go to the Downloads menu by selecting the tabs on the side of the screen and then selecting Downloads .

Step 11: Change your file view type to list view by selecting the icon in the corner that displays the files arranged in a list so that you can see their full titles. For the Google Play Store to work, you'll need to open the files in a specific order. When opening each, you may get a pop-up saying that you're opening a file from an unknown source. Select Continue. Open the files in this order and then select Install , then Done :

  • com.google.android.gsf.login
  • com.google.android.gsf
  • com.google.android.gms
  • com.android.vending

Step 12: After installing all four APK files, you should see the Google Play Store app added to your home screen. If you don't see it, you may need to restart your tablet. From here, you can select the app, log into your Google account, and start downloading apps from the store.

And just like that, you've successfully added Google Play to your Amazon Fire tablet! You can now download any apps/games that you want from the Play Store, many of which aren't available on the Amazon App Store.

If you've purchased a new cell phone in the past decade or so, you're probably already familiar with the SIM—the little thumbnail-sized card that's used to connect to your your carrier's cellular network —but in recent years smartphone manufacturers and carriers have started replacing them with something called an eSIM. The "e" in eSIM stands for "embedded," which makes sense as this is a SIM card that stays inside your phone and can't be removed. It performs the same function as a traditional SIM card but has the potential to make things a lot simpler for most smartphone users. Almost any new phone you buy nowadays features eSIM technology, including the new iPhone 15. In fact, the iPhone 15 doesn't even have a physical SIM card slot available, and all iPhone 15 users need to transfer to eSIM -- giving a hint at where the technology is going. Pretty soon eSIMs could become the standard, with physical SIM cards gradually fading out of use.

But if you're confused by the concept of an eSIM, don't worry -- we've got you covered. Read on as we get more specific about what eSIM technology truly is, and how it differs from its predecessor, the physical SIM card.

Most people think they don't need a printer, and that's often true. Given that you can display technology like tickets and QR codes on your phone, not to mention the prevalence of technology like mobile wallets, printers can seem charmingly antiquated - right up until the moment you urgently need to have a document on paper for a trip or presentation. If that happens to you, no worries - you can print directly from your smartphone or tablet, and here we'll show you a guide on how to print from your Android device.

Having a second phone number can be handy for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you want to separate your business and personal calls, or you want a junk second number that you can use to sign up for services so you can avoid giving out your personal number to so many places. That's particularly importance with the frequency of annoying spam calls and messages that can pile up when your phone number is made public. You might also want a second number to use in situations where you want to be able to contact people occasionally but you don't necessarily want them to be able to reach your personal device directly, like when internet dating or using an app like AirBnB. Whatever the reason, there are many situations where having a number that you can give out which you can make use of but isn't directly tied to your personal life like your main phone number is can be important for safety and security.

While you could get a second SIM card (or even an eSIM), an easier option for casual use is to use an app that lets you set up a second phone line. Whether you're after an Android app or an iPhone app, you'll find plenty of options to get a second phone line, including some which are free to use. We've hunted down some of the best options for apps that will give you a second phone number for whatever reason you need it, and we're sharing them with you below. Vyke
