There are many ways to rock safari theme at the wedding. Of course, you can let your imagination go wild and use this theme everywhere from your nails to your wedding table settings , but remember that there’s a fine line between classy animal print and cheap, vulgar animal print. To make it work you should remember two things: don’t overdo the print and take colors from the print and bulk out the scheme with those shades. Try monochromatic decor spruced up with animal prints, go for bold and muted decor with them, too, add leopard and zebra prints to your wedding cake and rock statement accessories inspired by African cultures. Simple and awesome!

How to Plan a Safari Wedding in Africa

Consider this the ultimate destination wedding.

When it comes to destination weddings, we say the more exotic, the better. And nothing could be more exotic than tying the knot in the middle of the Serengeti in Tanzania or among the grasses of the Okovango Delta in Botswana during a safari wedding! When Sasithon Pooviriyakul of Sasithon Photography wed Monty Hermann in Kenya, we couldn’t get enough—so we turned to the pros for a little insight into how you can make this adventurous destination wedding idea your own. So grab your binoculars, pack your khakis, and get ready to plan a safari wedding that your guests will never believe!

The current outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) has been declared a pandemic by the  World Health Organization . As the situation remains fluid, we’ll be sharing tips and stories from industry experts to give you of-the-moment advice and help you navigate wedding planning today. For the most up-to-date guidelines and latest on travel restrictions and requirements, check the  CDC  and U.S. Department of State websites.

Choose a private reserve

“When you’re looking for a wedding location, I recommend a property that is in a private game reserve instead of a national park ,” says Michelle Rago of Michelle Rago Destinations . “You’ll be able to get much closer to the animals in a private reserve, making for some thrilling game drives!”

Embrace your vision

“Safari lodges come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional elegance to rustic luxury," says Lindsey Epperly Sulek of Epperly Travel . “You can really find a lodge that fits your travel style and the way you want your wedding to look.”

Consider the entire property

Weddings, even small ones, take up space, so make sure to look for a lodge that can host a ceremony and reception. “Tenting may not be an option like it is for weddings here in the States, so it’s important to think about whether there is adequate covered or indoor space for your celebration as well,” says Rago.

Check the flight map

Getting to Africa isn’t easy, and requires multiple connections and at least a full day of travel. “To make it a bit easier on your guests, narrow your venue search down to camps that can be accessed with a direct flight from New York, followed by a drive (instead of an often pricey second flight on a small plane),” Rago advises. “For example, Shamwari Private Game Reserve is relatively accessible from Port Elizabeth in South Africa.” She also recommends Sabi Sands , Camp Jabulani , and Kapama Game Reserve , all private reserves in Kruger National Park.

Match the guest list to the lodge size

“Now isn’t the time to play the A-list, B-list game,” says Rago. “While it may work fine when you’ve got access to local hotels and a flexible venue, this much travel and limited space isn’t so easy!” Adds Sulek, “Most safari lodges are on the boutique side, which means adding someone at the last minute isn’t possible just based on the number of rooms available.” Instead, set a list based on how many people your venue can accommodate. Remember: There’s a chance you’ll have a much higher rate of “yes” RSVPs from guests who want to join you for the trip of a lifetime than you would for a wedding at home! “I recommend a buyout of the hotel—and the lodge might even require it depending on the size of your group,” Sulek concludes.

Consider alternative options

“If you are having a hard time cutting down your guest list, but the destination wedding you’re envisioning is beyond the scope of a safari lodge, look to nearby cities,” says Sulek. “ Cape Town , in particular, is a stunning destination for a wedding.” Once you’ve tied the knot in the city, you can head out on a safari for your honeymoon. “Add on a few days at islands like the Seychelles, and you’ll have a full, unforgettable experience of the best of Africa.”

Know where your budget will go

“Decide in advance what you will be paying for, versus what guests will pay for on their own,” says Rago. “Whether you’re covering costs or not, choosing lodges and reserves that are closer to major airports will make travel much more affordable.” When it comes to lodging, most are all-inclusive , so you won’t have to worry about surprise charges that can get pricey in a hurry. “This will help you estimate your costs up-front, and will help guests more accurately decide if they can afford to attend.” That being said, a trip to Africa will be expensive no matter what, which could be a strong impetus to keep your guest list—and therefore your costs—down.

Rethink your design

While you’ll be able to include many western wedding traditions (plus local cultural aspects!), the design and décor may be more limited. “The more remote a lodge is, the harder it will be to get your décor must-haves there—and therefore, the more expensive it will get,” says Sulek. So keep your design simple, letting the setting speak for itself.

Employ a travel concierge

Before you even have a guest list, a travel professional will be able to help you find the perfect lodge for you. “A great travel team will find the property to match your vision, as well as understand each venue’s benefits and limitations,” says Sulek. And they’ll be invaluable once your guests are ready to book their flights. Says Rago, “A travel concierge should be part of your event team any time far-flung travel is involved. They will be able to help guests book travel, and also provide a support network both before and during the trip.” That means you won’t be the one fielding those last-minute phone calls or trying to arrange group transportation!

Prioritize health

Your travel concierge and the lodge’s on-site staff will be able to guide you through any vaccines and medication needed for your journey, and you should reiterate it to your guests as much as possible. “Malaria is absolutely something to be aware of, and guests should be on a course of malaria medication during their trip if you are visiting an area where the disease is present,” says Rago. Also ask about other inoculations that might be required, such as yellow fever or hepatitis A and B.

Incorporate local customs

“One of my favorite African bush traditions is the evening ‘sundowner,’ which fits perfectly into a wedding celebration,” says Rago. “Every afternoon, you stop for a cocktail and a snack as the sun begins to set over your game drive. For a wedding, it can be dressed up with a full bar and more substantial hors d’oeuvres, giving your guests a chance to savor the sounds and sights of the setting sun.” If your lodge is near a local village, ask the property about dance and singing groups who might be able to come perform around an evening campfire. And of course, keep the menu local ! “Regional dishes will help spice up your menu and give your guests a taste of the area,” says Sulek. “In South Africa, for example, that might mean a spread of unique game meats!”

Bring in your own talent

“Planning a destination wedding is already challenging, and becomes more so in a remote area where vendor options are few and far between,” says Sulek. “For the most important item—such as photography and videography—you may be better off bringing the professional of your choice to ensure the quality lives up to your expectations.”

Make it educational

“Conservation is a wonderful aspect that is included in many game reserves and lodges,” Rago notes. “Protecting wildlife and preserving the land is a core component of why these lodges and reserves exist.” Educate your guests about the work that is being done in the area, and consider asking for donations in lieu of wedding gifts.

How to Plan a Safari Wedding: The Complete Guide

A safari wedding is truly magical, but it comes with a number of logistical challenges. Here’s everything you need to know about planning a safari wedding.

By Monica Mercuri

Safari Wedding

The First Look ✨

  • Be aware of seasonal considerations in your safari location around the time of your wedding, since much of your wedding will be centered on the outdoors.
  • While it’s important to map out much of the guests’ entire two- to three-day weekend to make the most of their short time, make sure to include some optional downtime.
  • Take time to enjoy yourself, and even consider making it a safari honeymoon.

There’s an intoxicating magic to a safari wedding—exchanging vows in the unrivaled beauty of wild, surrounded by loved ones. Imagine gathering a group of your nearest and dearest in one of earth’s most enchanting settings to experience its offerings together, and then layering a wedding celebration on top of it. It’s the whole wedding package.

That said, planning a big day in the bush comes with its own set of logistical challenges. It’s important to engage a planner who is both well-versed in the region and experienced in navigating the coordination required to pull it off. For a safari destination wedding (or safari wedding theme) you will never forget, read on.

Your Guide to Having a Safari Wedding

Look to Africa and Beyond

Africa may be the obvious place to start your search for the perfect safari wedding venue , but your wedding day safari experience can be found in many places around the globe. Including:

Bušveldas (or Bushveld)

Start With Your Guest List

The size of your wedding can significantly affect your safari wedding options. If you want a larger wedding party and guest list, you’ll need to make sure your venue(s) can accommodate all of your guests, from ceremony to reception. “Many lodges are only able to host a limited number of guests, so depending on your group size, you will want to select lodges that are close enough to each other to allow for joint gatherings,” says wedding planner Kim Zabriskie of The Wedding Collab .This also allows some variation in price point to accommodate the respective budgets of your guests, though keep in mind that you will have to manage getting guests to and from their respective lodges for group activities and events (which can be its own fun adventure , traveling through the African bush along dirt roads in safari vehicles).

Choose the Date of Your Wedding Thoughtfully

There are several factors you need to be aware of when scouting out the ideal special day. These include, but are not limited to:

Weather. South Africa's summer, for example, runs from about December to March, but the dry, colder months of May to October are the best time for animal sightings.

Diseases. The risk of diseases such as malaria is also higher during certain months compared to others.

Wedding Planning and Logistics: Step by Step

For most of your guests, this is likely their first trip to the bush—and likely a long way from home. Help make this a smooth trip for everyone by providing logistics and information ASAP. Including:

Notice of the wedding date (at least six months in advance)

Arrival and departure dates

Transportation details

Vaccination suggestions/resources

Visa requirements

Appropriate attire

Suggested packing list

Highlight the Local Flora, Flavors, and Sounds

Safari themed weddings provide the opportunity to get endlessly creative with invitations, welcome bags, and daily room drops that incorporate local items and inspiration. Some of our favorites include:

  • Table decor . Use elements from the local environment like grasses, reeds, and succulents that reflect your surroundings. These items are practical, beautiful, and often economical.
  • Local music and performances . Incorporating local music and performance into the celebration is another fun way to transport your guests into their temporary new world. An African children’s choir performing the ceremony music, for example, is a spectacular alternative to the usual Canon in D.
  • Bonfire braai. Host an outdoor bonfire and grill for your welcoming party or during the wedding reception.

Keep It Simple With Decor

You’ll never be able to outdo nature in terms of sheer beauty, so why even try? Don’t detract from the natural splendor with overcomplicated wedding design. Keep things simple and chic, with neutral colors and plain textures, and allow guests to be stunned by their surroundings.

Have a Back-Up Plan for Your Wedding Ceremony

Two things even the best planners can’t control: the weather and animals moving into your wedding setting. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony in an area popular with animals, try to reserve part of your budget for a contingency plan and have a few Plan B ideas at the ready. Keep a flexible mindset and manage your expectations.

Take Time to Enjoy Yourself

Give yourself ample time to enjoy your dream wedding and safari experience. Join your loved ones on game drives or at private game reserves, savor a sunset toast, and enjoy any amenities. Many safari wedding venues are experts at treating couples to an experience of a lifetime. After finding the perfect safari lodge, you can truly bring your best wedding ideas to life. Consider prolonging the magic even further and transitioning right into a safari honeymoon.

A jungle theme is a common kiddie party theme because there’s just something about animals in the wild that children find cool, mysterious, and amazing. Don’t get me wrong, the theme works for grownups, too. Contrary to popular belief, there are several ways to go about a jungle cake. This list of unique safari and jungle cake ideas will show you.

Having planned several jungle-themed parties for my nephews and friends in the past, I would admit that it can be a real struggle to find a cake that’s unique and different. That’s because when we talk about a jungle cake, we always picture the same elements: animals, trees, leaves, and a color palette that’s mainly brown and green. It’s almost always the same animals, too: lion, giraffe, elephant, and probably a monkey.

The good thing is that you can go for a jungle theme and veer away from the jungle cake cliché because there are some unique jungle cake ideas you can get inspiration from.

My Bottom Line Up Front

A jungle-themed cake is not just for little kids. Grownups, who love nature and animals, would appreciate a jungle cake, too. I would prefer something out of the usual fondant jungle cake with gum paste animals. I’d go for a number cake with buttercream topped with a mix of jungle animal decorations and the usual meringues, chocolates, fruits, and macarons.

Narrowing Down Jungle Cake Ideas

Getting unique jungle cake ideas may be difficult because you would have to sift through so many of the more common ones. So to help you save time, I have done it for you. In selecting these cakes, I made sure they fit the jungle or safari theme or that they have elements representing some of our favorite jungle animals.

I also look for the uniqueness factor. This is the tricky bit because “unique” is relative and could mean different things to different people. For me, however, jungle cakes are unique if they fit any of these criteria:

  • They apply any modern cake decorating trend.
  • They stay away from the traditional fondant animal models.
  • They stay away from using plastic trees and animal toys as toppers or decorations.
  • They are more experimental and adventurous with the use of colors.
  • They don’t stick to the usual color palette of greens and browns.
  • They are more creative in the representation of animals or jungle life.

Jungle Cake Ideas

1. baby jungle cake.

Jungle cakes with fondant animals are quite common and ordinary. So, some cakemakers give it a new — and cuter — twist by modeling the jungle animals as baby animals. The foliage will be done in fondant, too.

This uber-cute first birthday cake has buttercream frosting with a baby lion, baby giraffe, baby monkey, and baby elephant that are finely modeled in fondant. The leaves provide the foliage for this cake.

Here’s another take on baby jungle animals. This fondant cake also has a baby for a safari tour on a jeep. The name on the base is painted in gold, which is pretty trendy these days.

This jungle cake has baby animals in fondant, but it doesn’t have the usual green foliage. Instead, the leaves are pink and brushed with gold on the sides.

2. Cake with Gold-painted Toys

I know that little toy animals are overused as jungle cake toppers. But if you want a unique and modern twist to this otherwise very common jungle cake decoration, paint it gold. Gold, after all, is a very stylish color these days.

This three-tier buttercream birthday cake takes the jungle theme to a higher level by spray-painting the toy animals’ gold. This makes the toys look less plastic and cheap and classy. To make things more interesting, the cakemaker also wrapped the middle tier with a leopard print wafer paper, then topped the cake with dried pampas grass — both of which are modern cake decorating tools.

3. Prehistoric Jungle

Well, if you’ve decided on a jungle theme for your birthday, it doesn’t have to be the jungle as we know it now. You can go back to prehistoric times!z

This vanilla and Nutella jungle cake shows us exactly what we mean when we say prehistoric, with a T-rex and some plastic foliage right on top of it. The T-rex even has a little party hat and bowtie on and is holding a balloon! The cakemaker also showcases their piping skills on this one. That acrylic name in front of the cake adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Here’s another take on the prehistoric jungle cake. This time, T-rex is accompanied by a stegosaurus on top. The green pipings are still there to add texture and more greens to an otherwise overly basic cake.

The cakemaker decided to paint the dinosaurs gold for this buttercream cake. There are synthetic leaves for foliage and pallet knife elements on the sides.

4. Quilt-style Jungle Cake

This cute safari or jungle cake has an expertly executed quilted effect, with the fondant animals and other decorative elements sporting “stitches,” thus making them look like they were sewn.

5. Colorful Jungle Cake

A jungle theme doesn’t have to be dominantly green and brown. Experiment with color combinations. Or you can apply the celebrant’s favorite colors.

This fondant jungle cake, for example, is dominantly pink. Some of the leavers, the balls, the elephant’s ears, and the monkey’s party hat are pink.

More colors aren’t a bad idea. That’s what this fondant cake proves. The flowers give this cake a much-needed touch of pinks and purples, plus there’s a little bit of blue added to an otherwise green palette.

Of course, you can do a jungle theme sparingly, and for a lilac or lavender cake at that. There’s not even a tinge of green in sight. This fondant cake also proves that even if you only have an elephant and a monkey, that’s already enough.

6. Number Jungle Cake

Number cakes are very popular and in vogue right now. These are cakes that are shaped in a number from the top view, which number represents the birthday celebrant’s age. So why not incorporate the two concepts and make a number cake with a jungle theme?

This number cake for a baby girl’s first birthday showcases lots of bright colors. It has colorful cream pipings in various shapes and sizes, fondant animal faces, and fondant leaves. Here’s another safari number cake , for a baby boy turning a year old. This cake has a more subdued color palette. The theme is carried out through cookies with iced animal illustrations, leopard print, and leaves.

Take a look at this safari number cake with yellow and green piping. The animals are made of macarons.

7. King of the Jungle Cake with Synthetic Foliage

If you want a jungle-themed cake but want to keep things simple and avoid overcrowding your cake with too many animals, then just pick one. There’s no better choice than the king of the jungle himself: the lion.

A toy lion was painted gold for this cake. And just so nobody makes any mistake about him being the king of the jungle, a gold crown is there on top of the cake with him. Add some plastic foliage for more depth and more greens, sprinkle gold, silver, and white balls, then paint the sides with green buttercream using a pallet knife.

Another cake with just the lion roaring away. This cake has the trendy palm leaf in gold foil, chocolate balls, dried grass and leaves, and palette knife painting.

8. Paper-crafted Animal Toppers

You may want to consider making paper-crafted jungle animals as cake toppers. All you need are color boards or specialized paper products, a pair of scissors, glue, and sticks. If you have a Cricut machine, that would be swell, too!

This cake has animal toppers made out of a textured board.

You can also go for printed paper animal cutouts, like the ones on this cake . It’s also nice that this cake has palette knife painting on the side using soft pastel colors.

Paper animal toppers like these also look very cute on a cake.

You can create paper animals and punch leaves for your foliage .

9. Fondant Foliage

While fondant animal figures aren’t exactly a new and different thing, you can still make your cake look modern and stylish by using trendy foliage. Monstera leaves, for example, are quite trendy these days.

10. Palm Leaf + Stencil

This cake uses a combination of modern decorating techniques to turn an otherwise common theme and make it more contemporary-looking. As you can see, the cakemaker used the usual toy animals, but to give it a unique twist, they added a gold palm leaf and a buttercream stencil design on the side.

How about a light blue, white, and gold buttercream cake with gold palm leaf and subtle stencil at the front ? The animals are your usual toys from the dollar store, but they’ve been painted gold.

11. Piped Animal Frosting

Who says your jungle cake has to be three-dimensional? It could still look totally cute with a 2D decoration. By 2D I mean piping the design in colored buttercream icing on top of the cake so that it could be seen from the top view.

12. Edible Jungle Images

Edible images are pictures that are printed on edible icing paper using edible ink. So you can print jungle animals and use them as toppers. You can find suppliers or sellers online who could print the images you’d like.

Take this three-tier jungle Christening cake for example. All the animals are edible images, while the leaves are modeled from fondant.

13. Animal Cookie Toppers

You can pipe your design on a sugar or butter cookie using royal icing, then use the cookie as a topper. This cake, for instance, has lion and zebra cookies on top of the Swiss vanilla meringue buttercream.

These tiger and cheetah cookies are so meticulously done. They are painted using edible colors.

If you’re going for a prehistoric jungle, you can go for dinosaur cookies. These cookies have a dinosaur skeleton design and are dusted gold. The leaves are made of fondant.

14. Minimalist Jungle Cake

This cake is a great example of a minimalist cake. Its design details are very simple, with very basic shapes. Even the lion topper doesn’t require mad gum paste modeling skills.

15. Animal Fur Wrap Cakes

Edible image cake wraps are yet another cake decorating technique. These are designs or patterns printed on sugar sheets or wafer paper that you can wrap around the sides of your buttercream cake. You can get cake wraps with animal or fur prints for your jungle-themed cake.

This jungle cake has a different fur pattern for each layer. The first layer is wrapped in leopard print, the second layer in zebra print, and the third layer in giraffe print. Fondant animal figures are lounging on top of every tier.

16. The Lion is Not the Star

We can talk about jungles and leave the lions out of it. They’re not always the star of the show. With that being said, you can go ahead and let the giraffe or the zebra take the spotlight.

This pink jungle cake, for instance, only features a fondant giraffe and no other. Top it with dried bunny tails, pink blooms, pink monstera leaves, and pink macarons and you have one very feminine cake.

Here’s not just one, not just two, but three giraffes frolicking in the savanna. This cake is mostly beige and brown, with dried grass and brown buttercream smeared on the sides.

Here’s another gorgeous cake with a zebra at the center of it all. The zebra’s black and white stripes, as well as the black and white cake wrapper, provide a dramatic contrast against the pink surface of the cake.

And why not a giraffe and a zebra together ?

This cake only has a giraffe and an elephant. But what I probably find more unique is that the first tier is in a shade of green I don’t usually see in a jungle cake.

17. No Animals, No Problem

This jungle cake shows you that you can stay true to the theme even without animals involved. You only need leaves, something that says “wild,” and you’re ready.

18. Animal Silhouette Cake

You can cut out animal silhouettes from glittery paper and put them on your buttercream cake. Add a glittery acrylic topper, like this “Wild One” topper, and some foliage to complete the look.

19. Wooden Animal Cutouts

You can use wooden animal cutouts for your toppers or ornaments and add a combination of synthetic and real dried leaves.

20. Two-Tone Jungle Cake

Again, there are ways to make your jungle cake unique and elegant even if you decided to use toys from the dollar store. How? Use modern decorating styles and two-tone frosting.

This cake, for example, has buttercream frosting in white and a very soft pistachio green. Spice it up with gold palm leaf, gold names, dried pampas grass, and colored chocolate balls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: Technically, jungle and safari are two different things. A jungle is a forest with densely overgrown trees and tangled vegetation, while a safari refers to a trip or excursion. In other words, a jungle is a place while a safari is more of an activity. But when it comes to party themes, you can apply either “jungle” or “safari” to refer to anything about animals in the wild like giraffes, lions, rhinos, elephants, tigers, monkeys, and more.

Answer: Jungle cake pricing depends on a lot of things. It would depend on the kind of cake you want, the flavor and the ingredients needed to make it, the frosting, the design, the size, and the decorative techniques and elements used. Cake prices also vary from baker to baker because of varying skill levels. If you want to have an idea of how much you need to set aside or allot for your cake budget, the best option is to call bakeshops and inquire. You can give them a picture or a description of the cake you want to order, they will suggest flavors based on their specialty, and they can give you an estimated price.

Answer: Jungle cakes are usually great for birthdays and even baby showers. Sometimes, the jungle theme is used for other celebrations, too, like Christening and even graduations. The theme is mostly used for kids since they’re usually the ones who are most fascinated with animals. Of course, I don’t mean to say that the theme doesn’t suit adults, because as long as you love animals and the wild, a jungle cake would still be a great idea.

Jungle-themed cakes have been around for as long as I can remember. So it’s safe to say that the jungle or safari theme never goes out of style. I think part of what makes the theme attractive is the fact that it’s more generic and you have more freedom to give it your own spin and your own interpretation. You don’t need to refer to a particular character or a specific color palette.

Couple Rejects Wedding Cake Tradition, Opts for Unconventional Alternative

Could a scoop of wedding ice cream replace the famed slice of wedding cake? For one couple it has, and their surprise twist on the old wedding culinary tradition has garnered plenty of attention online.

A TikTok video captured the U.S. couple who chose to celebrate their union with a "first scoop" of ice cream, forgoing the customary multi-tiered wedding dessert for another.

The video , posted by Rachelle Jeffries, a pioneer wedding content creator known on TikTok as @_thebrunettechick, features the couple indulging in their favorite ice cream directly from massive white tubs.

"These two were a March 2024 couple that just didn't love the idea of a traditional wedding cake. So, they opted to do a 'first scoop' together instead," Jeffries told Newsweek .

"They chose their favorite flavors from a local Cleveland creamery, adding a local and personal touch to their special day."

Jeffries is the owner of a content creation firm, The Brunette Chick and Newlywed Social Club. Her business, launched in July 2023, specializes in translating the love stories of couples, in the lead-up to their weddings, into compelling social media content.

"I was fortunate enough to become the first creator in Ohio to offer these unique services," she said. "I have always been drawn to the art of storytelling, capturing real moments and genuine emotions."

wedding

Weddings are profoundly personal events, often reflective of the couple's unique story and preferences. For this couple, their decision to ditch a traditional wedding cake in favor of ice cream was not just a mere choice but a significant statement of their personal style.

"I believe that every couple has a story worth telling, and my mission is to translate their love into raw video clips and imagery that will forever touch their hearts," Jeffries continued.

Her approach is collaborative, working closely with couples to capture the essence of their relationship and the spirit of their wedding day. The result is often tasteful and aesthetic, yet warm and personable, drawing in plenty of views online.

Wedding creator

"I never expect a video to go viral, such as this one, but I'm always so thrilled when it happens! I believe that the encouragement of being different is so important to showcase so that each couple feels that much more confident to just DO WHAT THEY WANT on their BIG DAY," Jeffries said.

Her video has amassed over 1.8 million views since it was shared to the platform on February 19.

The increasing popularity of personalized wedding celebrations reflects a broader trend toward individuality in milestone events . As more couples choose to customize their weddings, the influence of social media continues to shape and expand the possibilities for celebrating such personal milestones.

The story of this couple and their first scoop of ice cream serves as a charming reminder of the fun that personalized details can bring to special occasions.

Inside billionaire Ankur Jain, Erika Hammond’s wild Egypt wedding: Private jets, pyramids and celebs

Ankur Jain and Erika Hammond

Billionaire Ankur Jain and former WWE wrestler Erika Hammond tied the knot Friday in an over-the-top ceremony that took place in front of the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

“We’re New Yorkers and there’s something so special about being in a completely different world environment,” Jain, the founder and CEO of tech company Bilt Rewards, told People following their nuptials.

“So we decided, our wedding is about having a moment together to celebrate the new beginning, having a really special party with our friends somewhere where you’re in a different world.” (Jain had originally suggested getting married in space, but Hammond was not keen on the idea.)

While the location of their wedding was unique, it wasn’t the only unorthodox detail about their celebrations: The couple had no bridal party and no wedding cake — although they did serve a birthday cake from Milk Bar.

“I had no idea what the napkins looked like or what the table setting looked like,” Hammond, 32, told People.

Jain, 34, added, “We’re not traditional wedding people. Why do you have to spend $20,000 on flowers? It doesn’t make sense.”

The couple worked to make their dream wedding with an event company called Vertex.

The one detail they were certainly involved in was the transportation of their wedding guests from the safari they brought them on in Africa back to Cairo for their ceremony.

Ahead of their welcome party, their private Egypt Air flight was halted by the South African government, leaving them in a huge bind. After the bride and groom stayed up hours trying to get their guests to Egypt, they eventually pulled it off — but it made their welcome event kick off three hours late.

“We partied until 5 a.m. having just the best opening night,” Jain recalled to People April 25. The event, which was held at the Muhammed Ali Palace, had a “Modern Cairo” theme and featured belly and fire dancers.

Jain and Hammond’s 130-person guest list was impressive as well. Some of the biggest celebrities celebrated their love, including Lance Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, Robin Thicke and his wife, April Love Geary, “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary and his wife, Linda, influencer Serena Kerrigan, several politicians and prominent businesspeople.

Thicke, 47, surprised guests with a performance, while Bass, 44, gave an impromptu show of “Bye, Bye, Bye” near the end of the night after a stunning fireworks show over the pyramids.

“We had the best time. It was so special,” Jain gushed to the outlet. “When the fireworks went off, it was one of the most spectacular moments. I was so emotional, I couldn’t even put it into words.”

The newlyweds met at Rumble Boxing, where Hammond is a founding member. She was also an instructor there when they first interacted.

A few years later, they hit it off and got engaged in November 2022.
