There are 2 different seasons though : the rainy season (from June to December) and the dry season (from January to May). Some people might think that rainy season is a “bad” season with lots of rain, storms, etc.. but it’s definitely a false statement, because rains do not really occur in far away islands (too far away from the coast), and there are not so frequent anyway. The “rainy” season is actually more a variation between cloudy days and beautiful sunny days.

Once anchored at another spot with spectacular views, you'll be ready to enjoy your chosen activity. You can swim and snorkel on your own, or the captain and crew will be happy to take you to their favorite spots. There will be kayaks or paddleboards, or both, available to explore around islands and reefs. If you choose to swim to the islands from the boat, the crew will take your cameras to the islands in the dinghy for pictures. Whenever you request, they will fill up an icebox with drinks and take them to the beach where they will also set up hammocks. On the boat, there will also be shaded areas provided, hammocks set up, or sunbathing areas available.

Sometimes, you will have lunch or dinner on the islands where you can BBQ over a coconut husk fire. On some islands where few families live, you will have a chance to buy coconuts, have them opened for you. You will enjoy a stroll on the beach while sipping your fresh coconut. You will meet Guna families and experience the serenity they live in, harmonizing with nature. You will also have a chance to see and buy their colorful molas. You may even participate in grating the coconut to make coconut rice that will accompany your lunch or dinner. You will spend your nights enjoying the company of your group or hearing fascinating stories from your captain under millions of stars. If time is right, you will be memerized watching a moonrise. Sometimes you will enjoy a bonfire gathering on the beach with other travelers. The next day, you will just have to do it all over again.

These are examples of some of the activities you will enjoy for as many days as you choose to spend in this magical corner of our planet. The one thing you will most certainly do will be creating memories that will stay in the warmest part of your heart forever.

How to Get to San Blas from Panama:

By car + water taxi.

It's a 2.5 to 3-hour SUV ride followed by a 30 to 45-minute water taxi ride, costing $75 one way or $150 round trip. After confirming your booking, a representative from a licensed transportation company will contact you to coordinate your land transfer. On the day of your trip, an SUV will pick you up between 5:00 and 5:30 am. The journey offers a scenic route through the jungle, with the SUV leaving the city and entering Guna territory. Upon arrival in San Blas, a water taxi (lancha) will be ready to take you to the outer islands where your sailboat awaits. You'll reach the sailboat between 9:30 and 10:30 am, starting your adventure in paradise. In the case of shared charters, the boat may be in the most secluded yet the most beautiful area, which is a little further than the arrival point, on the day of your arrival. In such a case, the lancha ride may be longer, with arrival on the boat at about 11:30. However, the view and serenity you will be greeted with will make the extra hour -which is a very scenic small boat ride through islands in itself- worth it. At the trip's end, the lancha will pick you up the next morning, retracing the route in reverse and getting you back to the city by noon.

Small charter planes can be arranged with a local airline, starting at around $500 for a 3-passenger plane. The ride lasts 40 minutes, and upon arrival at the airstrip in San Blas, your captain will be waiting for you. The boat will be anchored next to the island as well.

San Blas Islands Panama: My Detailed Guide & Tips

Sailing San Blas Islands Panama: My Detailed Guide 2024

Last Updated on March 6, 2024

The San Blas Islands are the closest thing there is to paradise! Here’s a detailed guide to sailing the San Blas Islands, Panama.

There’s no one around me, except for a star fish lying just a few feet away and my sail boat in the far distance. I sit on the fine sand, dipping my feet into the warm crystal water, enjoying the tiny island all to myself.

I am sailing in the San Blas Islands, Panama. And t his is the closest place to paradise.

The 375 islands that make up San Blas Panama are pristine and well-protected — some of them are inhabited by the indigenous Kuna people, but most are deserted. The islands are still relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. Getting here is not easy, but that’s exactly its appeal.

Table of Contents

Why Travel San Blas Islands?

Travel insurance for panama, things to know about the san blas islands, people on san blas islands, language on san blas islands, by car & boat, by san blas islands tour, when to travel san blas islands, how long to travel san blas islands, how to sail around san blas islands panama, what it’s like to sail san blas islands, sailing from panama to colombia via san blas, wander around el porvenir island, snorkel off perro chico, visit kuna families on pelicano island, swim off banedub island, where to stay in san blas islands, safety on san blas islands, health in san blas islands, food and water in san blas, cost of travel in san blas islands, what to pack for san blas islands, packing list for san blas islands, practical tips for traveling san blas islands, enjoy sailing in san blas, san blas islands panama.

The answer is simple: San Blas Islands are some of the most pristine and untouched places in the world. I’ve been to many island nations like Mauritius, Maldives and Fiji, and San Blas is right up there on a list of world’s top islands.

But it’s not going to stay this way for long. Even though island life here is still relatively basic and primitive, technology is slowly being introduced to the islands. Things here will change soon enough.

San Blas Islands, Panama, are home to the indigenous Kuna people (sometimes spelled “Guna”), who has maintained political autonomy from the mainland since a revolution in 1925. They control tourism on their own terms and benefit directly from the money earned from tourism. But their agreement terms with the Panamanian government are constantly changing, so nobody really knows what the future is like for San Blas.

san blas islands panama - isla pelicanos

It’s important to have travel insurance, even if you’re traveling Panama for just 1 week. Safety Wing is the most popular travel insurance company for COVID19-coverage. I use their Nomad Insurance plan , which covers COVID-19 as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date. Refer to my travel insurance guide for more details.

If you’re looking for all-inclusive resorts, jet skiing, and air conditioning, San Blas Panama is not for you. San Blas is a quiet, pristine area with empty castaway islands that usually have nothing more than a few huts and coconut trees.

The islands can get packed with day-trippers, but after they leave in the afternoon, you’ll often find that you have whole stretches of beaches to yourself. Apart from snorkeling, laying on the sand and napping on the hammocks, there’s not much to do.

Traveling Panama with kids is generally very easy, but at San Blas it can be abit trickier because of the lack of facilities (our daughter enjoyed it).  Electricity and running water are rare on San Blas Islands. Places that have them use it sparingly at night, and try to keep electrical consumption to a minimum. You might find a restaurant and bar at the lodges, but don’t expect shops or WiFi anywhere.

san blas islands panama - Kaleya on a swing

Out of the 375 islands in San Blas, 49 of them are inhabited by different Kuna communities. There are around 300,000 Kunas in total. The Kuna mainly rely on tourism, fishing and harvesting coconuts for a living.

One of the most important islands in San Blas is Acuadup (translates to mean “Rock Island”) where the Kuna elders and leaders live. The leaders on this island make all the main decisions for the other island and they help in trades and marriages with other Kuna communities.

The Kuna are quite friendly to young kids and they are very protective. They definitely make sure that you have the best Panama family vacation possible and that your kids are well taken care of.

san blas islands panama - kuna people

As with the rest of Panama , the official language on San Blas Islands is Spanish. Since the islands are inhabited by indigenous Kuna people, they speak both Spanish and Kuna language.

Not much English is spoken here, so be sure to learn some Spanish words before you get here. My husband is Spanish and we lived in Spain for 8 years, so we had no problem communicating with locals.

How to Get to San Blas Islands

Getting to San Blas Islands is not cheap, because of how restrictive tourism here is (being controlled by the Kunas). It is easy enough and there are many options, read below to decide which is the best for you.

To get to San Blas Islands, you need to book a 4WD transfer that takes 2.5 hours to get to San Blas Port in Carti. From there, take a lancha (speed boat) to the islands. It takes at least an hour to the first of the San Blas Islands.

Our sailboat booked the transfers for us but you can find transfer company online too. The 4WD transfer cost us US$70/person return, and the speedboat also cost $70/person return.

Before our trip, we’d read that the car journey can be treacherous. But it’s not! A new paved road has been built in the last stretch, so it’s quite smooth sailing. Be prepared for a fully packed car though. They always make sure to fill up all 6 seats in the 4WD.

As of May 2019, foreigners are not allowed to drive to the San Blas Port, so you won’t be able to rent your own car and drive there. Before arriving at the port, you’ll have to stop at a Kuna checkpoint, where they will check your passport. Foreigners also need to pay an entrance fee of US$20 here.

san blas islands panama - lancha speed boat

The cheapest option to visit San Blas is a day tour from Panama City . You can choose to stay in huts on the islands, but they are all rustic and overpriced ($130-200/night).

The day trips tend to cost around US$100 and include 4WD transfers and lancha. You’ll get to visit three to four islands in one day and also have a local lunch included.

But one day is not enough to see the beautiful islands and I highly recommend staying overnight. GetYourGuide also has a 1-night San Blas Islands tour that include transfers, so you won’t need to worry about anything else.

It is also possible to fly from Albrook airport in Panama City (not Tocumen International) to El Porvenir or Playa Chico. Air Panama flies the route on small 20-seaters and the flight costs around US$100 each way.

From El Porvenir or Playa Chico, you’ll need to take a taxi to the San Blas port and then a lancha. That will probably cost another US$40 each way.

Another option is a privately charted flight. These go from Albrook to tiny landing strips on the islands so you can go straight to your sailboat. These are crazy expensive but if you’re lucky, you might find a chartered plane that’s going back empty and can fly you back for cheap.

There are two main seasons on San Blas Islands: rainy season runs from June to December, and dry season from January to May.

During the rainy season, you might run into some rain but they’re usually showers and don’t last long. The dry season sees sunny days, but strong and constant winds. This is also the most popular time to visit.

We traveled San Blas Islands in April and had perfect weather the whole time we were there. No rain, cloudless skies and endless sunshine.

This depends on whether you’re planning to sail around the islands, sailing onwards to Colombia or just staying in a hut on the islands. I will cover more on those in my next point.

In general, three to four days would be enough to get a good feel of the San Blas Islands. We booked a two-night sailing trip and visited four islands, but still wished we had more time on the boat.

If you’re planning to sail from Panama to Colombia, those trips take at least five days, with two of them spent sailing in the open ocean. For those who plan to stay on the islands, you can easily hire lanchas to bring you island-hopping. If budget permits, I recommend booking at least three nights.

san blas islands panama - san blas panama - san blas islands

Sailing around San Blas is of course the best way to see the islands, but it’s also the most expensive. We opted to sail around the islands as it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us.  We have sailed in Greece and Croatia, we knew that we liked this style of traveling. It was definitely the best way to explore Panama with kids but families with babies will need to be careful and make sure the babies don’t fall overboard.

There are mainly two types of boats to choose from: mainly monohulls and catamarans. Catamarans are more spacious and comfortable, thus more expensive. The price for a shared boat on a monohull is around $130-200 per person per night and on a catamaran is $230 upwards per person per night.

After spending months researching, we went with Sail Boat Trips as the prices were the lowest. For a 2-night sailing trip, we paid $920 for my husband, daughter and myself. That included accommodation, all our meals and drinks (that included bbq lobsters), island hopping, and use of their gear. .

san blas islands panama - our catamaran

We sailed San Blas onboard Catamaran L’Eclectik , with a French family who was homeschooling their kids. Philippe and his family were welcoming and willing to share all their gear with us. The catamaran was in tiptop shape and very family-friendly. They have two girls aged 10 and 11, which means lots of fun equipment like a SUP and a floating trampoline that our daughter loved.

During our sailing trip, we would usually start the day sailing for just a few km and stopping at a new island. We would jump off the catamaran (my favorite part!) and start snorkeling around or swim up to the beach. It was so much fun for all of us: whether it was finding lion fish while snorkeling, or discovering an oddly shaped shell on the beach. Lunch would be served onboard, then it was time to relax on the hammock and nap before arriving at another island in the afternoon.

All our meals onboard were amazing, from delicious bbq lobsters right on the beach, to freshly cooked snapper fish, and tender beef steak. They also offered us lots of good wine and drinks. One of the perks of sailing with the French!

san blas islands panama - lunch onboard our catamaran

My original plan was to sail from Panama to Colombia through San Blas, but most boats don’t take kids under 12 years old. The journey includes two full days of sailing in the open sea and waves can be choppy.

The Panama-Colombia sailing trips also tend to be catered towards young budget travelers backpacking Central America . Prices are around $550 per person for the entire trip, sharing cabins/salon with groups of 4 to 6 people. Also, boats do not leave on the date set unless they have reached their full passenger capacity and weather conditions are favorable.

If sailing out in the open sea doesn’t interest you, check out  San Blas Adventures  that do party-style island-hopping trips on lancha (speedboats). They start either in Panama or Colombia. Prices are very affordable, but be prepared to sleep on hammocks. We would have picked this back in those days!

Things to Do on San Blas Islands

For most people traveling to San Blas, El Porvenir island is usually your first stop because of its central position and its connections with other islands. While El Provenir isn’t the most beautiful island of San Blas, it does offer electricity and running water.

san blas islands panama - el porvenir

Scuba diving is sadly not allowed in San Blas, but this means it has one of the best-preserved coral reefs in the world. Snorkeling is allowed though, so be sure to bring your snorkeling gear.

Another popular stop is Perro Chico , which has a lodge with a big picnic area. What I like about the island is the sunken boat (small shipwreck) located just off the beach. You can snorkel easily around the boat, even our 4-year-old kid loved it.

san blas islands panama - el porvenir

Pelicano Island has been recently made famous by the Netflix series, “Money Heist” as it was filmed here. It’s a tiny islet with just one or two Kuna family living here. The shallow waters all around the island are home to hundreds, if not thousands, of starfish.

san blas islands panama - pelicano island

My favorite is probably Banedub Island . The beach lies to the south and is out of the current so the water is shallow and calm. We saw lots of lion fish while snorkeling around the jetty. And at night, we also saw illuminating jellyfish swimming around and it was magical!

san blas islands panama - banedub island

There are very few options for lodging on the islands, and they tend to be extremely overpriced. You’re looking at $130-200/night for a little hut with sandy floor and a thin mattress covered by a mosquito net.

Cabañas Narasgandup   — This rustic, simple lodge has wooden overwater bungalows that stand over the clear waters. Possibly the best lodge in San Blas. Expect rudimentary accommodation, but a stunning setting and pristine beaches. Check the rates here.

Cabañas Wailidup — With small overwater huts, this lodge is another good option for budget travelers. The huts are built over crystal clear waters surrounding Carti Yantupo island. Check the rates here.

Enjoy San Blas — Located in El Porvenir, this lodge has wooden standalone huts that provide some privacy. It has a great atmosphere, perfect for young backpackers. Check the rates here.

Hotel El Porvenir — With basic huts and simple facilities, this lodge is located on the beachfront in Playón Chico. Rooms are simple but not very private. Check the rates here.

san blas islands panama - simple hut on the islands

The San Blas Islands are largely safe, with the tightly-knit Kuna communities looking out for each other. The Kuna people are very protective people, and they’re always making sure that tourists are well taken care of. We felt very safe here, and never once did we have any dodgy encounter. The only danger that travelers face is perhaps theft or unsanitary food.

san blas islands panama - kuna people

You don’t need specific vaccinations to travel San Blas Islands, Panama. However, as in most tropical countries, there is a risk of getting infected by mosquito-borne diseases in Panama.

Malaria is only present in the Darien Gap near the border with Colombia . The Darien province is famous for its dense jungles and as a dangerous road/gap between Panama and Colombia.

There’s nothing to worry if you’re just sailing around San Blas Islands. But I still recommend bringing mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeves at night to avoid getting bitten.

san blas islands panama - warning signs

It’s generally safe to drink tap water in Panama, but not in the San Blas islands. If you’re sailing on a sail boat, free water is usually provided. For those staying on the islands, I recommend buying big barrels of water (3L) as water that locals drink might not sit well with your stomach.

As for food, the Kuna people eat mostly seafood that’s freshly caught from the sea. We had amazing grilled lobsters, fresh snapper and shrimps on the sailboat everyday. I absolutely loved the food here!

You’ll notice lots of Kuna people rowing their wooden canoes around to different sailboats, selling fresh seafood they’d caught. Note that foreigners are not allowed to catch fish yourself or collect coconuts from the islands.

san blas islands panama - lobsters fresh

The San Blas islands are an expensive destination but they are SO worth it. A trip here comes with a hefty price tag but all the money go directly to the indigenous Kuna people (who rely mainly on tourism now).

Prepare to spend around US$150-250/person/night whether you are sailing or staying on the islands. Getting there costs around US$140/person for the return trip. However, there are ways to see San Blas Islands on a budget: you can come on a day trip from Panama City (round $100) or on a party backpacking tour (around $500).

Panama uses both the US dollars and the Panamanian Balboa, which are of the same value. Also there are no ATMs on the islands , so make sure to have enough cash with you. If you’re planning to book a sailing trip, you will pay a 10% deposit when booking and the rest in cash upon arrival.

san blas islands panama - diving

Note that it’s NOT allowed to bring suitcases on all sailing boats and lanchas (speed boats) that operate around San Blas Islands. We were told that the 4WD transfers won’t take you if you bring a suitcase. Make sure to just bring a daypack or a light backpack if you’re sailing to Colombia. You won’t need much on the islands anyway.

I recommend bringing sun-proof swim shirt that can protect your skin while snorkeling (bikini/shorts are not enough!).  KEEN footwear or normal sandals might be useful to walk on beaches strewn with seashells or corals.

Snorkel mask and fins are usually provided by sailboats or tours, so there’s no need to bring your own unless you want to. We brought our full-face snorkel masks and found them pretty comfortable and useful.

  • SPF 70 Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent with DEET
  • Snorkel mask and fins
  • UPF50+ rash guard swim shirt
  • Dry bag for snorkeling/kayaking
  • Quick-dry towels
  • Sun hat that covers the neck
  • KEEN covered sandals
  • SteriPen to sterilize water
  • Dramamine for motion sickness
  • GoPro Hero 7 for waterproof photos/videos!
  • Quick-dry t-shirts for the hot weather

Panama with Kids: My Panama Family Vacation Guide

  • Pack a light day pack for San Blas Islands — suitcases are not allowed on sailboats or lancha.
  • Bring cash in USD as there are no ATMs on the islands.
  • Bring a book or e-reader to keep yourself entertained.
  • Stock up on snacks or anything you need in Panama City before the trip as you most probably won’t find it on the islands.
  • If you’re allergic to seafood, be sure to let your sailboat operator know.
  • Be prepared to go completely off the grid when sailing or staying on the islands as there won’t be WiFi.
  • Please do not touch the star fish or any marine animals that you see. Also make sure you don’t kick or touch the corals when snorkeling. Do NOT even think of bringing home a starfish or anything you find on the islands.
  • The water conditions when sailing from Panama to Colombia can be rough, remember to bring motion sickness medication ! Even if you don’t usually get seasick, it’s best to be prepared for the rough conditions.

Hello Nellie,

We will be travelling to San Blas this April-2020 with our 5 year old son. It looks like everything was perfect for your and your family while sailing around San Blas, is there any advise “must do/see or cons/warnings” from your experience that you wouldn’t mind sharing with us?

Thank you for your time and for writing such a great trip report, so helpful!

' src=

hi Denisse, thanks for dropping by! I would say to book the sail boat as early as possible and try to find a boat that has experience sailing with families. We were lucky to have found a boat run by a family. Also note that the bedrooms inside the catamaran or sailboat are small and claustrophobic, so be prepared for that. I think I’ve included all other advice I have in the article. I hope they’ve been useful!

san blas sailing trip

Sailboat Trips made it possible for us to get a really unique holiday experience. Profesional, kind, quick, cordial. Very, very good service San Blas is an amazing place, and we had the most amazing hosts. We spent two days on the lagoon 41 with Mari and Chris; our first holiday on a boat. We therefore did not quite know what to expect. But no matter how high our expectations would have been, they were exceeded by far! San Blas is a true paradise, fantastic islands, crystal clear water, unspoiled nature and the always smiling Kuna people. But what made our stay really magical was the amazing company of Chris and Marie. They are fantastic hosts, making us feel truly welcome and at home from the very minute we arrived. They are so kind, open and easy to be around, while being the perfect hosts, constantly looking for ways to make our stay unforgettable; ranging from the great food you made to us, the trips to the tiny islands, the night on the beach, our cozy conversations and everything else. Truly unique and memorable. To everybody who get the chance to go, we can only say: Do it! :-)

“ Probably the most beautiful experience ever! ”

We definitely recommend everyone a trip to the Guna Yala islands. It's just paradise. Never saw any islands that compared! Staying on a Catamaran with Exequiel and Stella was awesome! They really made us enjoy every second of our trip! There was plenty of yummy food. Mostly fresh catches from the reefs surrounded by creative inventions from Stella. Our daughter who is usually quite picky loved it too. :) Exequiel always knew what he was doing and took us safely to the most beautiful islands of the area. When we wanted to visit an island he always made it possible. Always providing us with a cooler with cold beers, fruits and whine at the beach. Snorkeling gear was always available, so we could see the whole beauty of the reefs too. There is so much wildlife to see there. Amazing! They also introduced us to local Guna's which was really nice. I could go on for hours pointing out all the good experiences we had. I guess it's best you go and see for yourself. For us the decision is made: we will be back soon! And definitely again with Exequiel, Stelly, Elaine and Peter - keep up the good vibe! :)

“One of my favorite trips so far”

I had a wonderful experience with SailboatTrips. I sent an inquiry from the website and from there was contacted by email and WhatsApp by Camila. We discussed the different options (shared or private boat) and prices for each. She sent me pictures, info, and pricing for boats that were available for my dates. I chose captain Arnaud’s boat for 2 nights and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in San Blas. The food, conversation, relaxing on the boat and beaches was wonderful. Arnaud was a great host. He always made I sure I had enough to eat, drink, and that I was comfortable and having a good time. He made me feel so welcome on his boat that I didn’t want to leave! I would definitely love to go back!

Meet inspiring culture

Guna culture is unique and ancestral, very far from our western world. Discover and be inspired.

Guna Yala – San Blas islands

Guna Yala, “ land of the Guna ” in Guna language is known to western world as San Blas. Here are a few facts about this incredible archipelago and its people, located on the Caribbean coast of Panama.

Read more about Guna Yala – San Blas >

Some history

Guna people arrived from north of Colombia, went through the Darien province of Panamá, where they were living before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. San Blas was the name given by the Spanish to the area.

Like in the whole area, San Blas islands have two seasons, wet and dry. But unlike the Pacific coast of Panamá, rainfall here is much more limited !

Guna people

With matriarchal organization and ancestral culture, the Guna speak their own language, called Guna.

San Blas is a territory constituted by a narrow stretch of land and 378 islands. It has a area of 2 300 square km, and only around 50 of the islands are inhabited.

Most populated islands are located close to the continent, where there is a river flowing in the Caribbean sea.

Art craft - Molas

Guna art craft is amazing. The most known example are the Molas, made by the women, that are nowadays the main source of income for the whole family.

Best place to disconnect. We're told to bring snacks because meals were small. However we got three huge, sufficient meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The locals are very welcoming and nice. Brief Guide to the San Blas Islands

san blas sailing trip

Sailing in the San Blas archipelago ⛵️

Pantalasa Sailing Trips

Because most of the San Blas Islands are only reachable by boat many trip operators organize sailing trips in the Golfo de San Blas. This is the most common island vacation for most people that go to the San Blas Islands. There are multiply ways to sail through the San Blas Islands. We will explain the most fun and adventures ones on this page. If you’re sailing to Colombia, be advised that tourist infrastructure is virtually non-existent west of Achutupu and Uaguitupo. Although there are several communities that allow foreigners on their islands, generally speaking the southern stretches of the Comarca are off-limits. However, adventurous souls can expect a healthy smattering of striking scenery and empty seas.

Top sail charter choices ⛵️

  • Myblue4you sailing tours $246 per cabin (2-6 persons)
  • Peace sailing charter  $406 per cabin (2 persons)
  • Panama Luxury Charter $738 per cabin (2 persons)
  • Trophy girl Sailing $160 per cabin (2 persons)
  • Lyckaribe sailing $360 per cabin (2 persons)

Sailing from San Blas Panama to Colombia

sailing San Blas Islands

Sailing in the San Blas Islands of Panama is mostly for the rich who own their own boats but if you’re on a budget and want a little taste of this tropical Caribbean adventure, we’ll show you how. Because the Darien Gap, the jungle between Panama and Colombia, is very dangerous and rough terrain to get through many people avoid it and go by sailboat from Panama to Colombia or visa versa.

How much does sailing San Blas cost? Sailing in San Blas Islands costs an average of $100 a day, this includes drinks and meals throughout the day.

Day 1-2 Open water sailing

We’ll explain how this island vacation trip goes when you start in Cartagena Colombia. When you leave the harbor of Cartagena you will start your journey of two days of open water sailing, this means you’re on the Caribbean Sea without any land in sight. So if you know that you can get seasick prepare for this by taking seasickness pills. The Caribbean Sea can be pretty rough around the months October, November, December and January because of the rainy season in the area. After these two days of open water sailing you will arrive in the Golfo de San Blas. The water here is much calmer as this is not really open sea and the waves are broken on reefs.

Day 3 Panamanian customs and snorkeling

The first thing you have to do is get to the Isla El Porvenir because the Panamanian customs is on this island. Getting through customs will cost you around 100 US dollars. After this you’re ready to explore the beautiful Islands of San Blas. We suggest you head of to Dog Island, in Spanish Isla Perro. You can lay dog here for the night and spend your day on the beach or snorkeling near the shipwreck where sea life is abundant. The crystal clear water that is always on the right temperature makes this the perfect beaching and relaxing stay.

Day 4 Bar night and illuminating sea life

When you’re in for some fun at night you can head of to Isla Banedub, here you’ll find a small bar and some lodges you can stay in. Electricity is randomly available at all islands so don’t be shy if you only see a campfire. This island is known for its illuminating sea life . Mostly jellyfish and octopuses illuminating the night when it’s full moon or near full moon, you can rather say this is one of the most beautiful things you have ever seen in your life.

Day 5-6 Chichimei and hello fellow travellers

Next is the Island of Chichimei, this is a pretty big island compared to Isla Banedub and Isla Perro. You can walk around in about 15 minutes and find 3 different local communities on them. They are all really small and you won’t even notice them if you want to chill on the white sand beaches. On Chichimei you will find allot of fellow travelers especially backpackers since they provide lodges for multiply people on Chichimei. A nice and comfortable hammock for the night will cost you around 10 US dollar but breakfast and diner is included. From this island you can catch a canoe to the island just around 200 meters away from Chichimei where you can visit the Café del Mar bar for some Coco Loco’s and fresh Red Snapper diner . From this island you can see a famous picture that you probably recognize but never thought about it. Do you remember the wallpaper Windows XP and Windows Vista used with a tiny island that had only one palm tree on it, well guess what this island lies just next to Chichimei.

Day 7 Main islands

After your stay on Chichimei it’s time to head back and make one last stop in one of the bigger islands named Acuadup also called Rock Island. This is one of the main islands of San Blas where you can buy beautiful Molas , Kuna art pieces.

Day 8 Heading back

When you reach the mainland you will need tot hire a 4×4 jeep that bring you to Panama City in around 5 hours. This trip is like a roller coaster at first because you hit the jungle road that goes up and down left and right. The last hour you will ride over the Pan American Highway.

Ship Captains to contact

There are multiple Sail charters that can bring you from Panama to Colombia or visa versa. We have some experienced sailboat captains at your command. All those captains have a great reputation and are reliable to sail with, you can book sail-tours and for a couple of days and day-trips.

Our favorite captains sail on;

  • Rendezvous sailing charter (average comfort)
  • Velero San Blas (average comfort)
  • Catamaran San Blas (luxury comfort)
Check out captains that Sail the San Blas Islands here .

Take care and travel safe

Be advised that the ocean can be treacherous along this part of the archipelago, particularly as you venture further away from the islands and into open water. Here, 3m swells are the norm and the waves can reach frightening heights if there is a storm on the horizon. If you’ve been frightened by the sea in other parts of the archipelago, you can expect to be terrified here. Again, if you plan to travel these waters and have any doubts about your boatman, consider hiring another one before attempting this trip.

A bucket-list sailing trip in Panama’s San Blas Islands

Night fell quickly, as it does in the tropics. The only sound was the splashing of waves against the Zenith’s hull and the halyards making music against the mast in the breeze. The shadows of manta rays glided beneath the catamaran, flapping their wings in the Caribbean currents. Within a coconut’s throw of the boat, a palm-fringed island was perfectly silhouetted on the horizon. We made our way to the bow, where we flung ourselves onto the deck and looked up. The sky wasn’t just streaked with stars; it was so luminous, it looked opaque, the constellations clearly etched in glowing pearls of light.

We were out in the world again, and it was glorious. For four nights last winter, my college roommate and I sailed through the remote Panamanian archipelago that we’d dreamed about for nearly 20 years. The islands are part of an autonomous region governed by the Guna, an Indigenous people who have inhabited the Isthmus of Panama since before the age of Spanish explorers. A matrilineal society, the Guna are custodians of the region’s pristine natural beauty.

I first heard of the San Blas Islands as a 20-something backpacker. In those pre-Instagram days, travelers’ tales spread across the hammocks of guesthouses, through shared Lonely Planet guidebooks, over beers at neighborhood bars and down the aisles of the so-called chicken buses traversing Central America. Sprinkled off the Caribbean coast of Panama was an Eden-like archipelago with so many tropical cays there was one for each day of the year. Like the idyllic island mythologized in Alex Garland’s 1996 cult novel, “ The Beach ,” which was later made into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the San Blas irresistibly beckoned, tantalizingly difficult to access. Their isolation only enhanced the allure. Even when I later lived and worked in Central America, I never made it to the San Blas.

In the Greek islands, a ‘slow travel’ sailing odyssey to the far Ionians

During the dark throes of the pandemic, when the four walls of my apartment felt as if they were closing in, I looked at maps and dreamed of the globe. It was my college roommate who pinpointed the far-flung destination neither of us had ever been able to reach. And so we began to plot an adventure. Anticipation can feel like that first cup of coffee on a groggy morning. For many months, looking forward to the trip gave me a jolt of hope and optimism every day.

The genesis of Guna Yala

According to oral histories, the Guna are originally from the Darién mountains straddling the border of present-day Colombia and Panama. Intertribal conflict led to the gradual migration to the islands, a geographical location that induced fateful encounters with successive waves of invaders: conquistadors, pirates, privateers, gold diggers and, later, drug smugglers. Historians debate the exact timeline of the first Guna settlement on the San Blas; a more precise date is the Guna revolution of 1925 against the Republic of Panama. In the resulting peace treaty, Guna leaders agreed to be part of Panama as long as tribal laws were respected and customs were protected.

Today, the official name of the autonomous region is Comarca de Guna Yala, although the area is still known to many around the world as the San Blas Islands. It stretches more than 230 miles along the Caribbean coast. The Guna inhabit only about 50 of the islands, living in a traditional, communal way in thatched huts topped with palm-frond roofs. (The more populous community islands are packed with houses made of concrete and corrugated metal roofs.) The primary livelihood is fishing and coconut trade with Colombia; some of the population also lives on the mainland to cultivate crops such as yams, yucca, bananas and pineapple. The Congreso, the Gunas’ ruling body, dictates strict laws to conserve the Guna culture and protect the land. Outsiders are forbidden to own property or harvest conch and lobster. Tourism revenue is generated from permits and island visitation fees. Scuba diving is not allowed.

There’s just one road into the port of Carti, gateway to the islands. Navigable by 4x4s in daylight, the track is notorious for potholes, steep drops and washouts. Intrepid travelers are then funneled into Guna-operated water taxis, which ferry them to the tourist islands, where they can stay overnight in a hammock or cabana.

But there’s another way to explore this halcyon marine world. Sailboat charters allow access to the hard-to-reach outlying islands, where the sole human interaction may be with Guna fishermen. A few primitive airstrips can accommodate small planes, which connect visitors to their boats. We arranged our charter through San Blas Sailing , which offers a range of all-inclusive boat categories and focuses on sustainability by training Guna crew members. (The busiest sailing period is December to April, the “dry season.”) The French co-founder, Bernard Chemier, first came to the San Blas Islands 22 years ago on an around-the-world family sailing trip and never left. “The San Blas are unique because of the authenticity of the people, the beauty of the sand beach islands and their coral reefs, and the fact that Panama is hurricane free,” he later told me.

A primeval territory

From the air, the jungles of Panama unfurled in a luxuriant green tapestry. We didn’t see towns or power lines or roads crisscrossing the wilderness — just a rolling expanse of old-growth tropical forest abutting the sea. In fact, the country has set aside about 30 percent of the land in protected natural areas. And the Comarca de Guna Yala is so pristine that its mainland coast conjures a primeval world. This was especially evident at night, void of the light pollution of city settlements. From the Zenith, the forested shore loomed like the last frontier.

A senior’s intense, 14-day sailing lesson — from scratch — off the New Zealand coast

Captain Fred Ebers exuded the calm, pleasant demeanor of the most experienced sea captains. After a career as a consultant for the maritime industry all over the world, Ebers bought his French-made catamaran in Tortola and sailed across the Caribbean to Panama. Government maritime charts of the San Blas Islands haven’t been updated for decades and are unreliable, making navigation difficult. So before launching his charter business aboard the Zenith in 2016, he sailed alongside veteran captains to learn the ropes. His own charts are annotated with the wisdom he’s accumulated over the years. He’s also learned to adapt to the Congreso’s changing rules. Helping out as crew was Marina, the fun marinera, or hostess, who prepared delicious, copious meals.

Our days on the water were punctuated by visits from the Guna, who recognized the sailboat and pulled alongside in their skiffs — fashioned from dugout canoes, sometimes sail-powered — to sell fish, bananas and freshwater in barrels from the Río Azúcar on the coast. Whether purchasing their wares or not, Fred always offered our guests a cold drink and conversation. For a special meal, he sent a WhatsApp message to a Guna fisherman, who arrived with the largest Caribbean spiny lobsters I’ve ever seen — deftly prepared for grilling right before our eyes.

But perhaps the most wonderful morning was one we spent with a Guna family who arrived with a boatload of molas, the magnificent embroidered handicrafts for which the Guna women are known. Originally, the patterns were inspired by traditional body painting, translated into colorful textiles in reverse appliqué worn as panels on women’s blouses. Requiring at least a week of work, the molas pay homage to the natural world that’s so venerated in the culture: a menagerie of crabs and sea turtles and fish outlined with bold, geometric patterns. The mother spread out the cloth rectangles on the catamaran’s deck table, explaining the prices to her Spanish-speaking husband, who translated from the Indigenous language, while her six kids quietly drank juice. We took our time admiring the artisanal beauty — the brilliant hues juxtaposed against the shades of blue surrounding us — before making the tough decision of which ones to buy.

A disappearing world

Sailing the San Blas, I didn’t want to miss sunrise. The first rays of light turned the clouds pink, then caught on the swaying palm trees before illuminating the sea in shades of blue. As the sun moved higher in the sky, the color of the sea would morph from a deep azure to the kind of pinch-me-I’m-dreaming turquoise that makes you want to jump in immediately. And the waters were calm because of the protective barrier reef encircling the islands. From our anchorage in the Cayos Holandéses (Dutch Cays) at the northern edge of the archipelago, we could see the powerful Caribbean waves crashing in plumes of surf against the reef.

Because the lack of a keel on the catamaran results in a shallower draft, our boat could anchor closer to the islands than the handful of monohull sailboats we encountered at an anchorage. It was an easy swim or paddle to individual cays. Occasionally, as we’d walk along a beach, we’d stumble upon plastic blighting the landscape. Whether washed ashore from ships, carried by tourists or consumed by the Guna, plastic is increasingly a problem. (There’s no infrastructure in place to collect trash, and what can’t be composted or fed to the fish is burned.)

A bigger problem is rising seas due to climate change. In “ The Panama Cruising Guide ,” the bible for sailors navigating these waters, Eric Bauhaus writes: “Every time I do a survey … I have to take islands off the maps that are now nothing but shoals.”

Keen to show us the best snorkeling spot, Fred sailed the Zenith to a place called the “Sand Islet,” so named because of its lack of trees. What used to be a cay is now a spit of sand encircled by a coral reef. Over time, Fred has seen hermit crabs fighting over an increasingly shrinking territory until it was nearly covered by the Caribbean. We snorkeled for more than an hour with Marina, who pointed out sculptural coral as mesmerizing as the fish. The starfish glowed orange, and dolphins frolicked in the waves next to us. We were so enthralled by the vibrant underwater world that we didn’t notice how far we had drifted in the currents. Fred picked us up in the dinghy and carefully motored to the disappearing cay, where we sank our toes in the sand that would soon be completely submerged.

“The water is rising more and more every year,” Chemier later told me. “In about 50 years, the Guna people will have moved onto the mainland because of the submersion of their islands. This is a destination to be seen quickly before it disappears.”

Tips and Advice for Sailing Around San Blas, Panama

san blas sailing trip

Embarking on a sailing journey to the San Blas islands is an adventure of a lifetime. This amazing part of the Caribbean coast of Panama has always been a challenge for sailors, but now, with the wealth of information available online, it’s easier than ever to plan the perfect itinerary.

For short sailing trips of 3-4 nights, we recommend an itinerary that covers the Coco Bandero Cays, both East and West. These islands are just a stone’s throw away from the local airport and the most secluded part of the Kuna Yala region. For longer trips, we suggest adding other groups of islands, such as the glorious Dutch Cays and Cambombia area.

san blas sailing trip

When planning your San Blas experience , it’s essential to take various variables into consideration. Firstly, the more nights you spend onboard, the better. Short trips of 2-3 nights don’t make much sense, given the transfer times, preparations, and the time it takes to adapt to such an exotic destination.

If you can, fly in ; you’ll land in the most idyllic and isolated part of Kuna Yala. The 40-minute flight through the jungle and cays of San Blas is a breathtaking experience. Road transfers take up to 4 hours, no matter what any captain, agency, or local guide may say. Road transfer times start as early as 5 AM, so be sure to have a good night’s sleep if you’ve booked land transport.

When visiting the islands, take a “less is more” approach and aim to visit one island a day. This way, you can immerse yourself in the Indigenous culture at the right pace. Ask the agency or captain to do a one-way trip around the cays to avoid repeating islands. Also, be patient with the locals and respectful of their ways; “ahorita” literally means “little now.”

san blas sailing trip

Lastly, keep in mind that there’s not much to buy in San Blas except for local handcrafted goods. You don’t need to bring a lot of cash; around $20/person/day is plenty and enough to buy you some beers outside the catamaran or pay the few dollars needed to enter some of the islands. There are no ATMs or banks in San Blas.

San Blas Catamaran is here to help you plan the perfect San Blas adventure. Please go through all the information on our website before booking your next Caribbean sailing holiday. And remember, we can always adapt to any trip duration. Let us know how many nights you’d like to stay in the San Blas islands, and we’ll be happy to accommodate your needs.

San Blas Sailing – Panama to Colombia via the San Blas Islands with Ave Maria Sailing

There’s a very good reason why we decided to go on a San Blas sailing trip – For anyone looking to travel from Central to South America via the Pan American Highway will ultimately run into the same barrier – The Darien Gap, a huge area of dense jungle and swamp, 160km long and 50 km wide, separating Panama from Colombia, making conventional road travel between the two countries practically impossible. So, it’s safe to say that this was not going to be the route for us! This left us with the choice between flying, or finding a sailboat to take us on a San Blas sailing trip from Portobello,  Panama to Cartagena, Colombia!

NOTE – To arrange to sail with Ave Maria, you need to contact them directly –  [email protected]   or call Panamá + 507 608 94802/ Colombia + 57 314 887 3353

We are simply bloggers who traveled with Ave Maria and loved it (read on to see for yourself!) We do not organize bookings!

San Blas Sailing with Ave Maria – Panama to Colombia – Colombia to Panama

  • Fly from Panama City to a city in Colombia. You can find cheap flights on Skyscanner , but you can still expect to pay $200 to USD 300 p/person.
  • The most relaxing and enjoyable – Take a private sailing boat for five days across the Caribbean from Panama to Cartagena via the incredible San Blas Islands – $525 to $575 p/person.

We chose number 2!

San Blas Sailing – Panama to Cartagena via the San Blas Islands

We had decided that we wanted to experience crossing the Caribbean by sailboat, but most of the boats we found appeared to be ‘backpacker party boats’ with 15 to 20 people crammed in like sardines, sleeping on the deck, on the floor, on each other – Not for us! We’re also not really into the backpacker party scene anymore, so that was another no-no.

Most of the prices for these San Blas sailing trips ranged from $525 to $575 per person, including three meals a day, 4-5 days sailing time, with 2-3 of those days in the San Blas Islands.

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

There is one company offering a San Blas sailing trip for $375 by speedboat, with basic accommodation on one of the San Blas Islands instead of on a boat, but with a little more research we found that the cost ends up being much the same, as you finish far from Cartagena. The price doesn’t include water, transport to the departure point ($35) or entry charges to some of the areas ($25). You also then need to consider the onward transport to Cartagena ($75), plus several days’ food and accommodation, so the total cost is the same as an all-inclusive San Blas sailboat experience to Cartagena .

two monkeys travel - san blas sailing - panama to colombia - colombia to panama - san blas islands - 4

WARNING – It’s unfortunately quite common for some agencies and hostels to tell you that a boat you want to book has canceled their trip, is broken, or even to make up bad stories about them, to steer you towards boats that offer them the most commission. Always check for real customer reviews on Trip Advisor, do your research and make up your mind.

We recommend trying to contact individual boats directly. If they are at sea, then you will have to send them an email or Facebook message. Otherwise, use a local phone or Skype to call them.

This left us with privately owned sailboats, catering to smaller numbers of passengers and a more relaxing, personal experience. There are a handful of boats offering a trip like this, but few of those have their website, and it can be hard to contact the owners themselves, as they are often at sea and use travel agents and hostels to get their bookings.

After several days searching for San Blas sailing boats online, in hostels and with various agencies, we came across a picture of a classic looking sailboat, with twin masts, timber deck and trims and sleek, slender lines, anchored in crystal clear turquoise waters between two palm-fringed desert islands. AVE MARIA was etched into the stern in elegant, antique lettering. It was beautiful, and we wanted it! We had found our boat; now we just had to find the captain. Unbelievably, an internet search brought up the website for the boat and its captain, with San Blas sailing trips running between Panama and Cartagena, via the San Blas Islands, including one leaving the next day from Portobello, about 2 hours from Panama City. We called the cell phone number, and they had two spaces available, so we grabbed the opportunity and packed our bags again. Here’s how our amazing San Blas sailing journey went with Ave Maria Sailing.

Day 1 – Panama City to Portobello – Setting Sail to the San Blas Islands

So, we just had to get to the port of Portobello by 10 am the following day, 4 th of June. Getting to from Panama City to Portobello is relatively cheap and easy – there is a bus from Albrook Station to Colon City which takes less than 2 hours and costs about $5, then another bus to Portobello for about $1. Easy! If you feel like splashing out, then you can get a yellow taxi which could cost you anywhere from $60 to $100, depending on your Spanish and your negotiating skills.

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

We arrived at 10 am and met up with Captain Paul, an Australian who has been living in Colombia and offering San Blas sailing trips for the past five years. We gave him our passports to take to the port authority to stamp us out of Panama; then we had a few hours to spend exploring Portobello, which is packed full of history, ruins, and stories of Spanish gold and pirates! We stocked up on beer and wine and extra snacks to take with us and waited until our 4 pm departure time when we jumped in a launch boat to take us out to the Ave Maria. She was just as beautiful as in the pictures, classic and streamlined with a white hull, Teak deck, and wood trimmings. Paul and Sindry helped us up onto the deck, and we stowed our big backpacks into the hold, keeping just a small day bag with a couple of t-shirts and some toiletries.

At 50 feet long the Ave Maria sailing boat has the capacity for eight passengers + plus two crew, with everyone having their bed! Four beds in the bow cabin, two double beds and one single in the mid cabin and the dining area convert to sleeping space for the final person. We only had four people + 2 crew on our trip, ourselves and a young Swiss couple who are also traveling the world. With light wind, Paul fired up the engine and left Portobello for the open Caribbean. Sindry cooked an amazing beef stew dinner, and we all fell asleep pretty early after that. Paul stayed up awake at the wheel, sailing 16 hours through the night to reach the San Blas Islands so that we would have a full days there to enjoy ourselves!

Day 2 – Arrival at San Blas Islands – Coco Banderas and our first Culo de Pollo!

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

We woke early with the rocking motion of the Ave Maria as she glided up, down and across the waves. When we climbed out onto the deck, we could already see an archipelago of small San Blas islands in the distance – clusters of palms hovering on the surface of the shimmering water encircled by white-sand halos, like an epitome of lonely bliss. This was exactly what we had come for! Sindry prepared a fresh and healthy breakfast of muesli, cereal and fresh fruit, which we ate outside in the cleansing salty air. As we arrived at our first stop, Coco Banderas, the weather began to turn.

Dark clouds and bickering gusts of cold winds surrounded the islands, and the choppy water pitched the boat up and down. This was nothing to worry about as the Ave Maria can handle massive storms, and we were already anchored down between two islands. The brief yet intense storm, which lasted for about one hour, is known as a Culo de Pollo, or Chicken’s Ass, for its characteristic erratic winds, chasing around in all directions. As soon as the storm was over, the wind died down, the sun broke the clouds, and the sea was restored to shimmering turquoise glass, clear all the way to the sandy floor below. Several other boats had chosen the same spot to shelter, but they continued on their way once all was clear again.

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

We spent the day diving off the boat into the warm sea, exploring the little islands and snorkeling around the shallow reefs that partially enclose the area. Local Kuna fishermen dive here for crabs, langoustines, and lobsters, which you can buy fresh out of their boats for just several dollars each! While we were snorkeling we saw huge shoals of tiny bait fish and red-nosed pencil fish, then as we swam back around to the beach, we saw a huge manta ray – two meters wide – and a smaller stingray!

For lunch, we had freshly caught fish, which Paul had reeled in from the back of the boat during the night, cooked up with a mixture of other fresh, delicious seafood, all prepared by Sindry!  The afternoon was passed with more of the same simple pleasures until we watched the sun set behind the island, casting oranges, reds, and purples across the sky. We spent the night anchored in the same spot, talking amongst ourselves and eating yet another amazing home-cooked dinner.

Day 3 – San Blas Islands BBQ and night time sea turtles

The morning was completely peaceful, any other boats that had been in the area had vanished, and we had three whole islands all to ourselves! Sindry made us breakfast with fresh fruit and scrambled eggs on toast. The two best things about a San Blas sailing trip (apart from sailing) are the San Blas Islands and the food, so we swam to the nearest island to gather driftwood for a beach fire BBQ.

The sun had dried everything out pretty quickly, and we had a big fire going just off the beach using nothing but driftwood, palm leaves and dried coconut shells. Sindry prepared everything in the Ave Maria and brought it over to the island in the little dingy; marinated pork chops; avocado salad, potatoes, olive oil and home-made balsamic salad dressing. With a simple hot plate laid on the fire, we had an instant grill for the pork chops, which were some of the best I’ve ever tasted!

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

Later that afternoon, a local Kuna came by in his boat with some giant langoustines, freshly caught that day, which Paul and Sindry prepared for dinner with pasta and sauce, with crusty bread that evening.

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

During the night, just as everyone was thinking about sleeping, two massive sea turtles started swimming around the boat, feeding on the algae growing on the underside of the hull, then surfacing to take deep noisy breaths. They stayed around for about 2 hours, and all the while manta rays were jumping out of the water and flying several meters into the air! Paul and Sindry said this was really unusual for this part of the San Blas Islands and they’d never seen this kind of activity before!

Day 4 – New San Blas Islands and ‘the big question!’

Our last day in the San Blas Islands before heading back out into the open Caribbean, to end our San Blas sailing trip with a 34 hour non-stop journey to Cartagena.

After breakfast in the morning, we pulled up the anchor and headed deeper into the archipelago to another group of islands, with more reefs and peaceful, warm water. We made the most of the swimming and snorkeling and explored the larger island closest to the boat.

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

After a burrito and salad lunch, while everyone was chilling out on the boat, I paddled Kach and me out to the island in the dinghy, and we took a walk along the beach to take some photos. We sat down on a big driftwood tree, and that’s when I gave her a ring I had found in Istria, Croatia just a week before and asked her to marry me. Luckily she said yes, and now we’re engaged! Apparently, we are the first engagement on an Ave Maria sailing trip! We all celebrated with some drinks on the deck and chilled out again until we were ready to start the long journey to Cartagena and set sail that night.

Day 5 – San Blas Islands to Cartagena, Colombia

More great food, conversation, reading and episodes of Game of Thrones kept us occupied on the day and a half journey, and we even took shifts steering the boat along the way. The rain came and went, and so did the hours; it’s incredible how time passes when you have no idea what time it is!

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

We all slept quite early and woke up as we pulled into the Boca Grande port of Cartagena at about 4 am the next day. We were there just in time to see the sunrise over the city, which was one of the most beautiful mornings we’ve ever seen. There was no rush to get off of the boat, we had breakfast and packed our things before piling ourselves and our luggage into the dinghy. With all four of us on dry, Colombian land for the first time, we said goodbye to Captain Paul, Sindry, and the Ave Maria – Our San Blas sailing trip was officially over!

San Blas Sailing - Panama to Cartagena - San Blas Islands

We were so glad that we had chosen the Ave Maria for our San Blas sailing adventure – Great people, great food, great company, beautiful classic sailboat, spectacular San Blas Islands!

The price is reasonable, Style With Tina, with what we had experience. 🙂 We had fun in exploring San Blas islands.

Don’t be jealous, Kalliopi, Sooner or later you will have your own adventure. Consider San Blas islands in your travels.

I think that $500 for a sailing trip like this is not bad at all. The boat seems perfect for a small group trip, or maybe a family get away and the experience of a bbq on board must be priceless. The water looks stunning, especially that picture where you are floating above sea stars.

Joanna, 500$ was a good deal. The whole experience of San Blas sailing was priceless. And yes, this is perfect for a family or friends getaway. Bring your family in San Blas islands. 🙂

What a great sailing adventure you had! Your photos are so inspiring, I’d like to go there one day! Pinned your post for the future! Congratulations on your engagement! So romantic!

Thank you Francesca, It was really a great choice and no regret at all. San Blas sailing is definietely among the best experiences we had.

Panama already figures in my bucket list. San Blas Islands looks divine and being proposed at such a magical place would have made it all the more memorable. Many congratulations on your engagement, dear! 🙂

Felt romantic and magical, Ratisha. San Blas sailing was really memorable and will definitely want to visit the islands again.

The idea of that cramped sail boat sounds awful! And great heads up about the scams! What a unique adventure you’ve been on from preparing and eating fresh fish on board to experiencing the islands with nobody else around. You were lucky to have a captain like you had too but most importantly CONGRATS on your engagement. What a place and journey to propose on! Certainly unforgettable for you both!

Thank you, Amy! San Blas Sailing was such an adventure and indeed unforgettable. 🙂

wow!! Such a beautiful place. Hope you Guys really enjoyed there.

There are cheap flights from Panama City to Cartagena, via Bogotà. I paid no more than 150 USD for that. Besides, Viva Colombia also has cheap flights to Bogotà and Medellin. And since February there is also a ferry service that connects Colon to Cartagena, twice per week.

How do I know? Because I ended up in a really BAD sailing boat. Just from the pictures, yours look much better than the one I took. Despite my efforts to make some good research, I ended up on a 12 meters sail boat with 9 more persons – including the crew. Yes, that means 10 persons on 12 meters – something I found out only when we finally got on the boat, as until the day before the captain ensured me that there would be 6 of us. It was unbearably crowded. We did not have a table to sit and eat, because the deck was all covered with our belongings. I got really sea sick but I think that if we had had a bit more space it would not have been so bad, as I could have laid down.

I ended up abandoning the boat as soon as we arrived in Porvenir, and getting back to Panama City to then fly to Cartagena!!

Good you guys had a better experience.

Hello Claudia, sorry just now we were on a boat again from Leticia to Manaus! Anyway, do you know the name of your boat company? That’s what we’ve heard too from other tourists and we’re not party people anymore so we were boat hesitant taking the boat, just lucky that we’re able to connect directly to the owner and it’s one of the best trips we’ve taken! Thanks for sharing your story, hope we can warn others too! Positive vibes!

I don’t have it. I was searching for a boat and then saw in the hostel that there was a flier. The guy had not really set up a company yet. I wish I could write a review for that. His name is Ian and he’s Canadian. Perhaps you came across him?

not sure, we’ve talked to a lot of people and even checked this popular hostel there but some of them are rude. Anyway, the ferry stopped in the last few months and i think they will resume in the 3rd quarter of this year. We also checked viva colombia before as an option instead of san blas, good thing we didnt fly because it’s indeed a great experience! =) Enjoy your travels Claudia!! =)
