Indulge In An Idyllic Farm Life Near Nagpur

Indulge In An Idyllic Farm Life Near Nagpur

Farm stays in India or nature-driven staycations in India have become our weekend essentials, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Tatva Farms – an organic farm stay near Nagpur, Maharashtra is an easily accessible weekend escape for those looking for authentic farm life experiences.

Have you ever fancied picking oranges from an orchard? Well, I have. All my fascinations came true when I checked in at Tatva Farms.

I have stayed at various nature-driven homestays and resorts that have their own organic farms. However, staying at a farm was a new experience for me.

Tatva Farms, as the name suggests, is a farm where you find the orchards of lemon and orange, trees of mango, chikoo, guava and banana, cotton plants, and various vegetables that are grown organically without any pesticides or chemicals. Besides, there’s a bullock cart to add to the rustic atmosphere.

It’s a place ideal for day picnics. For those who would like to immerse deeper into the simple charms of a village life, the owners have prepared four basic rooms for sleep and shower. The rooms are named after the elements of nature – Bhumi, Jal, Agni and Vaayu.

It’s a newly built property – quite comfortable and nice. However, there’s lots to be done. The owners have quite a few great ideas in the pipeline, which would make the experience of staying at a farm even more exciting – camping sites and tree houses.

My very first impression of Tatva Farms was of a modest place created with an idea of taking us back to traditional, healthier ways of living by incorporating sustainable elements, such as traditional matkas (clay pots) for storing drinking water, clay dishes for serving food and eliminating plastic as much as possible.

I was also quite impressed with the fresh lemon water bottle that was given to me as a welcome drink. Quenching my thirst with the soothing sight of lemon plantations all across the field was a little extra gratifying.

Organic farms in Maharashtra

The owners of the farm, Ashwini and Anubha, are two sisters who share sweet remnants of their childhood through this package of carefree loitering around in the sun, sitting under a tree endlessly, walking through the orchards, plucking fruits, swaying on a swing and watching the day go by.

We need such refreshing and meaningful escapes once in a while. Don’t we?

Being at Tatva Farms is reliving your childhood.

You should care to sojourn at Tatva Farms if your heart melts for the comfort and calmness of nature and the rustic life.

The fiery beauty of Palash.

The first sight that you will fall in love with is of the Palash (Sacred tree or Butea) trees while approaching the farms. The romance of these dark orange flowers enkindles a happy anticipation.

It’s beautiful to walk through these trees in the embrace of soft morning sunlight and also in the early evening. To be honest, my pictures could barely capture the true beauty of these flowers.

The sunrise over the lemon fields.

As soon as you wake up at Tatva Farms, the sight of the mellow sunrise over the lemon fields makes you want to soak in the charms of nature as much as you can. And just when you have settled down to gaze, there’s the bait for a cup of morning tea in the midst of a forest. Who would decline that?

It’s a short walk through the Palash trees to where you are served tea. It’s a great spot to have an overview of the entire vicinity and also the distant hills.

Resorts in India with their own organic farms

Local breakfast of Nagpur.

A breakfast can make or break a trip for me. Yes, what I have for breakfast in a place makes a huge difference to my opinion of that place. Well, I had poha the way Nagpurians like it – with chana gravy, and they call it Tari Poha . It was really nice. I also had big, farm fresh oranges, and bananas. I appreciate that the hosts served eggs as well.

Breakfast spread in a resort in Maharashtra

Farm fresh veggies on your plate.

No matter where I go, having farm fresh veggies is the icing on the cake for me. I can’t thank my hosts enough for preparing a beautiful vegetarian table for me – a mildly flavoured lauki soup, delicious fried bitter gourd as a side dish, lima beans and dum aloo gravy as the main course. And of course, bhakri (jowari roti) and the locally grown rice to go with the veggies.

The best part about a farm stay is to relish fresh, organically produced vegetables. To make it more experiential for me, Ashwini made me pick my own vegetables for lunch. It was definitely fun.

Watch the village-style cooking.

Just next to the dining area, which is quite rustic and charming, is the kitchen. They have an open-air space for cooking along with it, where you can watch your meal being cooked. All the meals are prepared by the locals residing in the nearby villages. Therefore, the flavour and feeling of the food is quite homely.

The good food that you get to eat is one of the reasons to escape to villages once in a while.

Organic farm stays in India

High tea under the Mahua tree.

Truly, the highlight of Tatva Farms, for me, is the Mahua Tree, which is by a small pond that has green water. It was absolutely ‘heaven-like’ to sit under the tree and look over the fields and the changing colours in the sky towards the twilight.

They usually serve stuff like pakodas or dhokla along with tea in the evening. I think the essence of a place like Tatva Farms is the time that you spend under the Mahua by the pond – peace, beauty, nature, delicious meals, and invigorating conversations.

Organic farm stays near Nagpur

Picnic by the lake.

Tatva Farms is a lakeside property. There’s a reasonably picturesque lake for you to enjoy a picnic breakfast or lunch by.

They also provide rafts to those who would like to indulge in some water sports.

And, not to mention it’s a lovely spot to watch the sunset.

Lakeside farms in Maharashtra

Tatva Farms is a great escape during the pandemic because it’s an isolated property. You get to connect with the village life and breathe in the fresh air.

You can visit the farm with your own family, stay overnight, enjoy the simple farm hospitality and come back refreshed.

Lockdown escapes in India

Note: I visited Tatva Farms on invitation by the property owners. However, as always, all opinions and photos are my own.

Is a farm stay on your travel wish-list in 2021?

From Farm to Table: Exploring the Beauty and Bounty of Agritourism in Nagpur

From Farm to Table Exploring the Beauty and Bounty of Agrotourism in Nagpur - Bharatvarsh Nature Farms

Located in Maharashtra, Nagpur is India’s second-largest city. Additionally, it is one of the country’s largest orange cultivation centers. The city of Nagpur produces about 1.5 million tons of oranges every year, making it a leading orange producer in the world.

Adding value to oranges has always been a signature of Nagpur’s orange producers. The area has developed a new type of agritourism in recent years, that is attracting visitors from across India and abroad. The term “agritourism” refers to a type of tourism in which visitors visit and participate in agricultural activities on a working farm.

The benefits of agritourism include improved farmer livelihood, the promotion of sustainable agriculture, and authentic, informative experiences for visitors.

What is Agritourism?

The concept of agritourism involves integrating travelers and tourists into agricultural and rural practices. In addition to visiting farms and attending agricultural events, there are guided tours of agricultural sites. There are also cooking classes and tastings, workshops, and other activities.

Through this experience, you get to understand production, preservation, and the role of farmers within the agricultural industry in the deepest sense. This opportunity provides an authentic and informative experience that immerses one in the local culture and agricultural practices.

What do farmers get out of this? Farmers are able to share their knowledge and experiences while earning additional income from them. This in turn, improves their livelihood standards and increases their income by diversifying their activities.

By introducing tourists to the production and preservation side of agriculture, agritourism allows them to gain a better understanding of the hidden natural and cultural heritage of the local area. If you want to experience an authentic and meaningful vacation while providing much-needed support and appreciation for the local farmers, then go for it.

The Benefits of Agritourism

Farmers, tourists, and local communities benefit from agritourism. The following are some of the most significant benefits of agritourism:

  • As part of this method, you will learn about and observe the unique production process of local agricultural products, which will help spread awareness of sustainable agriculture.
  • Culture exchange takes place through observation and participation in local events, festivals, and activities.
  • The system allows farmers to earn additional income by providing tours and selling their goods to tourists.
  • You gain first-hand knowledge of agricultural production while farmers share their experiences and knowledge with visitors.
  • Local employment opportunities, such as tour guides and farmhands, help boost the local economy.
  • It leads to an improvement in infrastructure in local communities, such as improved roads and improved tourism facilities.

Farmers and tourists alike benefit from Nagpur’s agritourism industry, which is a vital part of the local economy. With its emphasis on sustainable agriculture, cultural exchange, and supporting local farmers, agritourism is becoming increasingly popular.

Why You Should Visit Nagpur’s Agritourism Farms

Agritourism in Nagpur has a number of benefits for visitors, both experienced and novice. Not only do visitors get the opportunity to witness farm production first-hand, they also get to experience India’s vibrant culture, meet the local farmers, and shop at the local farm stands.

Moreover, it gives visitors the opportunity to learn about India’s agricultural industry and the production process. This can help them gain a new appreciation for organic, sustainable farming and how it differs from large industrial farms. Spending time in the peaceful green and golden fields of the farm gives visitors a much-needed respite from busy city life.

Finally, agritourism in Nagpur gives visitors an opportunity to learn about India’s diverse culture and traditions. Local festivals and cultural events give visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich history, while supporting the local farmers by buying their products encourages the sustainable growth of the agricultural industry.

What To Expect When You Visit An Agritourism Farm

When you visit an agritourism farm, you should expect an authentic experience that you won’t find in any other place. The farm landscape itself is likely to be stunning – expect pastoral views of rolling hills and the bright colours of crops in bloom.

In addition to admiring the natural beauty of the surroundings, you’ll receive a warm and friendly welcome from the farmers. Try to participate in farm activities such as outdoor cooking, weaving, and other workshops, to know the producers and hear their stories. It is indeed a different experience.

In addition to learning about organic farming and sustainable agriculture, you’ll be able to sample produce directly from the farm, giving you a unique taste of what fresh foods can be like. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to purchase some of the farm’s products to take home.

Finally, there are numerous other benefits to agritourism that you can experience during your visit, such as the chance to socialize and make new friends, learn about the local culture and traditions, and experience a slower pace of life. Visiting an agritourism farm can be both a relaxing and rewarding experience.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Visit

If you are looking to make the most out of your visit to an agritourism farm, here are a few tips to remember:

  • Plan ahead – accommodation can be limited, so it is best to book and plan ahead to ensure you get the dates you want.
  • Participate as much as you can – Participating in farm activities can be a great way to get to know the farmers, create long lasting memories, and really get hands-on experience when it comes to organic farming and sustainable agriculture.
  • Dress appropriately – make sure you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and closed-toe shoes, and if possible, prepare for any weather conditions by taking extra layers of clothing.
  • Bring a camera – don’t forget to pack a camera or smartphone to capture the beauty of the landscape and all the fun activities you take part in.
  • Respect the local customs – remember to be respectful when engaging with the local farm community. Remember that this is their home and take the time to learn about their culture and traditions.

Nagpur’s Orange City: The Fruitful Adventures of Citrusy Explorers

Nagpur's Orange City: The Fruitful Adventures of Citrusy Explorers

Nagpur, often known as the “Orange City,” occupies a special place on the map of India and is renowned for its brilliant orange orchards that spread as far as the eye can see. Beyond its moniker, the city’s association with oranges has a rich historical and cultural past. In this thorough investigation, we set out on a joyful adventure to learn the origins of Nagpur’s nickname, the Orange City, and to delve into the interesting stories of citrus-loving explorers who have contributed to the heritage of this fruit-rich city.

  • The Orange City: A Unique Moniker

Nagpur is known as the “Orange City” for a good reason. It has become a citrus paradise thanks to its rich soil, hospitable climate, and ingrained love of citrus fruits. However, why is Nagpur known as the “Orange City”?

The term “Orange City” has been associated with Nagpur since the 18th century. The name captures the spirit of the city’s character and is more than just a catchy name. The moniker “Orange City” encapsulates both its cultural significance and citrus-based prosperity. This title has been proudly sported by Nagpur for many years.

  • The Legacy of Nagpur’s Citrus Heritage

The origins of Nagpur’s citrus legacy may be found in the 18th century, during Bhonsle’s control of the city. The Bhonsles promoted orange farming, creating the groundwork for a citrus empire. These kings vigorously encouraged orange farming after realising Nagpur’s soil had potential for it. As a result, Nagpur started to become known as a centre for the production of citrus.

Thanks to the tenacious efforts of the Nagpur population, this citrus history has been conserved over the years. Families who have been growing oranges for many generations are extremely proud to continue this custom.

  • Climate Conducive to Citrus Excellence

The weather in Nagpur, with its various seasons , is perfect for growing oranges. The oranges in this dish stand out in flavour and aroma because they are a delicious blend of sweet and tart. The city has a tropical, dry, and wet environment that is perfect for citrus fruit growing. The climate there is ideal for growing oranges with the ideal ratio of sweetness to tartness, with hot summers and mild winters.

The exceptional quality of Nagpur’s oranges is greatly influenced by its special climate. The climate, not just the variety, is what gives Nagpur oranges their unique flavour.

  • The Varied Varieties of Nagpur Oranges

There are several different orange cultivars grown in Nagpur, each having its own flavour and set of qualities. The Nagpur Santra and Nagpur Kinnow are the two most well-known of them. Both of these kinds have come to represent Nagpur’s reputation as the “Orange City.”

The flavour and brilliant colour of Nagpur Santra are well-known. Locals love it, and it’s a popular variety at marketplaces all around India. On the other hand, Nagpur Kinnow is adored for its reviving flavour and high juice content. In the nation, Nagpur oranges are now well-known thanks to both types.

  • The Journey from Orchard to Table

The luscious orange orchards of Nagpur are a sensory joy to wander around. Before reaching tables across the nation, the oranges are carefully hand-selected, sorted, and packaged. The intriguing, meticulous, and labour-intensive process of bringing Nagpur oranges from the orchard to your plate is what makes it so special.

The ripest and best fruits are hand-selected during the labour-intensive picking of Nagpur oranges by trained pickers. Then, to guarantee that only the best oranges reach the market, these oranges are painstakingly sorted. The sorting procedure is evidence of the citrus growers in Nagpur’s dedication to producing fruit of the highest calibre.

  • Festivals That Celebrate the Orange

Nagpur celebrates this citrus marvel with events that demonstrate its depth of passion for oranges. The city’s favourite fruit is the subject of the vivacious Nagpur Orange Festival. This event showcases Nagpur’s culture, traditions, and oranges, but it is more than just an orange festival.

A feast for the eyes is the Nagpur Orange Festival. It brings together craftspeople, artisans, and chefs from all around the area, resulting in a tapestry of hues, flavours, and fragrances. Visitors can sample a wide variety of orange-inspired foods, including tangy orange chutneys and sweet orange-flavoured treats. The celebration is evidence of the city’s devotion to its citrus-growing past.

  • Citrusy Explorers: The Unsung Heroes

Every delicious Nagpur orange has a hardworking and dedicated tale behind it. Generations of wonderful adventurers who worked carefully to maintain this history have nourished the city. These people, who are frequently unsung heroes, are the foundation of Nagpur’s citrus sector.

The farmers, scientists, and businesspeople who have committed their lives to oranges are known as citrusy explorers by us. They have experimented with different growing methods, created new types, and looked at creative marketing strategies for oranges from Nagpur. Although they frequently go unrecognised, their dedication is what keeps the orange tradition alive.

  • The Role of Agriculture in Nagpur’s Economy

In addition to being a source of pride, Nagpur’s economy greatly benefits from the orange sector. Numerous people can find work thanks to it, which also helps to stabilise the local economy. The agricultural industry is deeply entwined with Nagpur’s economy, with oranges playing a key role.

Thousands of families in and around Nagpur make a living from the cultivation, processing, and sale of oranges. It concerns the entire ecosystem of enterprises that depend on oranges grown in Nagpur, not just the fruit itself. The orange industry spurs economic expansion throughout a range of sectors, from packaging to transportation.

From the Orange Capital of India: Nagpuri Oranges

' src=

It is one thing for a town to be known for its food culture, but it is quite another for a city to be linked with the fruit. Nagpur, the 3rd largest city of Maharashtra, is known as the ‘Orange City’ taking after the sweet juicy, pulpy fruit as the city is the largest producer of oranges in India. The Nagpur orange , also known as the sweet mandarin or Nagpur mandarin, is one of the most popular varieties of oranges.

Along with several large land parcels of orange farms, the agro-climate of the city is hot and its soil is ideal for these fruits to grow. Additionally, specific farming practices that are applied in Nagpur are best suited for its dimpled-skin oranges.  Hence if Ratnagiri is known for its mangoes, Nagpur corresponds to orange or sweet mandarin.

Known for their distinct flavour and aroma, Nagpur oranges are also known as Nagpur Santra, Nagpur Mandarin or Sweet Mandarin.

They yield during the monsoon season when they are also ready to be harvested. Blossomed twice a year, the delicious citrus fruit that hits the market between September to December is Ambiya which has a tinge of tartness. But Mrig, which is harvested in January is a lot sweeter. The fruit does not require high altitude and can be grown in many types of soil. The ideal pH of the soil should be between 6-8.

The rind is loose-jacketed and easy to peel. Wine made from these oranges is delicious. Some of the best Mandarins are grown in Wardha and Amravati too.

Nagpur orange was not cultivated in Nagpur by accident but by design. Late Shri Raghujiraje Bhonsle, tested Nagpur orange as a kitchen garden plant making the experiment a successful venture. It was tested for the first time and since then the cultivation of oranges has gained speed. Today, this fruit is one of the most profitable ventures and is exported all over the world. A visit to Nagpur will offer a wonderful vista of beautiful orange farms with trees laden with ripe oranges.

What is so special about Sweet Mandarin or Nagpur Oranges?

Nagpur Mandarin or Sweet Mandarin are table fruit which is not exactly round. Deep orange slices of the flesh and their acid-sweet taste and aroma give it a stand-out quality making it different from other varieties of orange. Nagpur orange is grown mainly in Satpura Hills but is also cultivated in Darjeeling, Odisha, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

The word on the street is that Nagpur Mandarin is now awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) status. GI is a tag which is given to some products in a certain geographical location. It is a certification that automatically highlights the unique qualities and status of the fruit due to its geographical origin.  The GI status also extends to privileges to the farmer growing Sweet Mandarin helping them to sell their citrus in both the international and domestic markets. It helps improve the processing industry and also gives a boost to the export market.

Nagpur Mandarin is regarded as one of the best mandarins in the world and its demand graph just growing.

Santra in food

Peel the oranges and eat them as it is or go crazy over orange burfee. Believe us when we say that sweet mandarin is packed with goodness. Rich in various vitamins A, B and C, the peels have an established market for their oil and citrus acid.

Orange halwa, or salad green with sweet Nagpur citrus to a Ganga-Jamuna, these sweet mandarins can be enjoyed any way you like. It can be used in other ways like squash, fresh juices concentrate, in cocktails and of course in jams.

The peel of Mandarin is a good source of essential pectin and oil. It makes the basic material for the production of cattle feed, candies, and alcohol.

Fix a visit to Orange city, Nagpur to taste the unique Nagpur oranges but also takes in the lovely deep orange view.

The “Tiger Capital” of India is another name for Nagpur, but since the ‘oranges’ grown here are so well-known, the city is also known as the “city of oranges”.

Nagpur oranges, sweet mandarin, are also one of the best horticultural crops which come after banana and mango nationally.

A Visit to the Farm and a Lakeside Picnic with the Kids

November 4, 2016 by Lata 3 Comments

Diwali vacations call for a special day out with the kids. We had our long awaited day trip visiting a lovely farm followed by a picnic by the lakeside. Here are some glimpses of the day out with kids.

A Visit to the Farm and a Lakeside Picnic with the Kids

Thangavel Date Plantation

When we came to know of a cutting-edge farm near our city, we had our minds set on visiting it along with the kids. The Thangavel Farm and Date Plantation is an innovative and modern farm near Nagpur. Upon reaching the farm, we were pleasantly surprised to hear melodious Christian music playing on the loud speakers. We soon found out that the owners practice  Plant Music Therapy !

The owner Mr. Thangavel, along with his family, breaks all the stereotypes and makes an excellent example for the kids. The Thangavel family experiment and improvise on their farm by implementing modern farming methods. Away from the city crowds, they have built an enviable life. Along with their progressive and state-of-the-art farming techniques, they stay connected to every advancement in the field of technology including an impressive social media presence. It isn’t surprising then, that celebrities from Bollywood actor and land-owner Ritesh Deshmukh to the High commissioner of Mauritius, are among the ones to visit the first-of-its-kind date plantation in Central India.

Lata Tokhi with Shona Thangavel at Thangavel Date Plantation, Nagpur

With our host Shona Thangavel

The date plantation is a novelty, but the kids also loved other plants new to the area. The strawberry patch and the mushroom farm were a hit. And what surprised us most of all was the Dragonfruit and the ‘Black Guava’. Shona Thangavel, our host, welcomed us graciously and took us through her farm. I will let the pictures speak further of our lovely visit.

The fun of a road trip begins as soon as the city limits are crossed.

Reaching the Thangavels farm was a 30 minute drive from Nagpur.

Picnic by the Lakeside

We had planned to proceed to the popular ‘Bor Dam’ ahead, for our picnic lunch. But thanks to our friendly hosts at the Thangavel Farms, we came to know of a lovely lake just ahead of the farm. The ‘Bhivkund’ lake and dam was much more quiet and serene. Since the kids were not ready to leave the farm earlier and it was almost lunch time, we decided to take our lunch there. Everyone agreed unanimously that Bhivkund made a lovelier picnic spot and we had the place almost completely to ourselves!

Lakeside picnic and lazying

Lakeside picnic and lazying

After the lunch of homemade poori-bhaji, fruits and Diwali mithais, the other members of the family lazed around in the shade of the tree. Grandma put the baby to bed (Yay! God bless Grandmas!) and Mamma-Papa went exploring with the older ones.

But before heading out in the sun, don’t forget the sunscreen!

sunscreen

From hats for the day time to jackets for the evening, Moms have to pack a lot for a day trip. But do not forget a sunscreen! Toss one in your handbag and keep applying it whenever you are out of the car.

lakeside picnic exploring

We collected river stones and wild flowers, spotted chameleons and an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ rabbit hole :). Past picnickers seemed to cooked in a real traditional style, giving us a major complex. Well…some day!

Once we were all refreshed and rejuvenated, it was time for some fun in the water.

Bhivkund Lake Side Picnic - Day Trip from Nagpur

The tree seen in the picture is a favorite spot for taking pictures as we saw all other picnickers (there were only a handful of them and they left very soon) taking pics and selfies here.

A Visit to Bhivkund Lake in Hingna, Nagpur with Kids

The kids had a great time splashing their legs in water and tossing stones in the water.

Picnic at Bhivkund Lake in Hingna, Nagpur with Kids

By kids, I mean ALL of them – the youngest the most of them!

On to Bor Dam

Well fed and relaxed, we now proceeded to Bor Dam. Bor Dam is fairly popular and the place was crowded, even though we reached very late. We all agreed that it had been a great idea to stop at Bhivkund for lunch, but we did not want to miss the beauty of Bor Dam too 🙂

Road to Bor Dam

The road to Bor Dam winds between ghats and jungles. You need to stay equipped with a camera here!

The Picturesque Road to Bor Dam

The Picturesque Road to Bor Dam alone is worth the visit.

langur monkey

The Indian ‘Langur’ monkeys never disappoint. You are sure to spot a few on any road trip 🙂

The Bor Jungle Safari Jeep

The Bor Jungle is famous for tigers and other animals, like all jungles surrounding Nagpur. You can opt for a Jungle Safari and also stay at the Guest House overnight.

Sunset at Bor Dam, Nagpur

We were in time for a beautiful sunset at Bor Dam.

Enjoying at the Bank of the Bor Dam

More Fun in the Water!

Bor Dam Road after Dark

It was only 6.30 when we left Bor Dam, but the jungle roads were pitch dark, this being the onset of winter in India!

kavdas tea-coffee shop

The experience of driving through the Jungle roads was completed when we stopped for coffee at a shop in the middle of nowhere. Google Maps told me that the place was ‘Kavdas’.

Dinner at Ras Ranjan dhaba, Nagpur

Closer to the city, we stopped at a Dhaba for a sumptous dinner which was the grand finale of our memorable day trip.

A visit to a farm is hands-on education for kids combined with a lot of fun. My 11 year old returned with a lot of information in her head. The last I heard, she was telling her friends about Strawberries being harvested in December (and that she visited a farm that was recently visited by Ritesh Deshmukh…lol!). My 5 year old enjoyed a glimpse into the farm life, natural scenery around the lakes and leisurely family time. He also weaved a spooky story about a ‘Haunted House’ near the bare tree at the Bhivkund lake.

And my 20 month old enjoyed meeting the friendly farm dogs, other farm animals and splashing and throwing stones into the water! And not just for the kids, really. Adults get to learn a lot too! It was not only a much-needed break from city life, but also an excuse to leave work behind and solely focus on enjoying with the kids. With family members to take turns with the kids, such trips are also a great way for Mommy and Daddy to re-bond with each other!

Their medium-height canopies of trees form the most relaxing shade for the exhausted travellers to rest under. Nagpur is often referred to as the centre of our nation and to commemorate this, the British had built a monument called the Zero Mile Stone that they believed fell at the exact centre of the country. Needless to say, as the nation progressed with time, boundaries were rebuilt and the geographical validity became obsolete. But the cultural significance of this spot has persisted throughout and hence, this colonially symbolic spot in town is an unmissable attraction!

4. Marvel At Deeksha Bhoomi

article image

Merely by looking at the monument one could easily deduce that this prominent edifice is a haven for peace and serenity. Amba Khori Falls is a perfect picnic spot and makes for a great unplanned getaway, owing to the scenic drive through Ambakhori Forest one needs to take to reach here. It is said that Gandhi Ji set up his base here in 1936 during the independence struggle, as it was in central India. He resided here in an Ashram and it is safe to say that the small village that stands today was a haven of national importance back in the day. Due to the large number of colleagues who chose to reside with him, the ashram was a full-fledged institution and this significantly grand establishment still has the Ba Kuti and the Bapu Kuti for visitors to see. These houses preserved in time truly transport one to the 1930s and thus its a place of great cultural importance.

Yes, Misal Pav is quite a popular street food across Maharashtra, but did you know that Pune, Kolhapur and Nagpur have an eternal rivalry about who served the spiciest plates of the dish? Going by how spicy Nagpur’s food, especially Saoji food is, it is quite likely that the elaborate Misal Pav plates and thalis found in this city will blow off your socks with the ultimate heat punch. Don’t forget to try out Misal Pav in Nagpur’s famous Manu’s Misal and Misal Darbar when in town.

7. Kadhi Patodi

Another iconic food from Nagpur is Kadhi Patodi, a breakfast dish that is, quite unlike other Nagpuri dishes, not as spicy as it is mellow and heartwarming. The Patodi or Patwadi is basically a steamed dumpling made with gram flour dough stuffed with a blend of fresh coriander and coconut. Occasionally, the Patodi is also deep-fried for texture and more flavour. Patodi is usually served with the yoghurt-based Kadhi, though some places also serve it with a fiery Tarri. When in Nagpur, don’t miss out on the Kadhi Patodi served at the iconic Patodi Bhandar.
