things to do in San Marcos, TX

San Marcos, nicknamed San Marvelous, is the seat of Hays County and a beautiful small city that’s welcoming, modern, and steeped with history and culture.

With many endangered species inhabiting its waterways and natural habitats, public art installations, and enticing shopping opportunities, this is a great tourist hotspot with many unique, one-of-a-kind sites to explore.

San Marcos is a fast-growing location that manages to push for technological growth while maintaining its legacy of historical sites, natural havens, and cultural centers.

No matter your personal interests, you’ll find things that you love in San Marvelous, whether art, food, sports, wildlife, or history.

Here are the 26 best and fun things to do in San Marcos, Texas.

Table of Contents

1. Rio Vista Park and Rio Vista Dam

Rio Vista Park

Dana Rasmussen / Shutterstock

In 1998, the Rio Vista Dam faced serious damage during a Texas flood.

For years, the dam remained quite damaged and on the brink of failure.

That’s when the city commissioned Recreation Engineering and Planning to save the dam by removing concrete side walls, grading banks downward, and introducing artificial rapids, among other efforts.

The dam was reopened in 2006 as a recreational park now known as Rio Vista Park .

Rio Vista Park is a beautiful 13-acre expanse and one of the top San Marcos attractions.

The park follows the San Marcos River, which you can view from within the park, and is filled with artificial rapids and even a nice, deep swimming hole.

Visitors flock to the park to partake in a wide range of water activities, especially during summer.

They rent canoes and kayaks from the Olympic Outdoor Center near the park, rent tubes inside the park, and go for swims and relaxing basks in the swimming hole to cool off.

You can also enjoy other things at Rio Vista Park, especially if you’re not keen on getting wet.

Use some tennis courts, picnic at the provided tables, or explore the numerous cycling and hiking trails.

You can also bring your kids to the onsite playgrounds.

Better yet, there is no admission cost, making Rio Vista Park one of the awesome free things to do in the city!

2. Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours

Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours

Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours

The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment is an important Texas State University site dedicated to research, education, and conservation efforts related to freshwater ecosystems.

It primarily focuses on Spring lake, one of the planet’s largest artesian springs.

One of the best features of the center is the Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours , which are among the most popular things to do in San Marcos.

These interpretive tours bring you around Spring Lake, where you’ll get to learn all about the habitat and marine life that thrives in the body of water.

You’ll be impressed by the diversity of aquatic life that you’ll view during these tours.

Native fish are to be expected, but you’ll also spot alligators, prawns, turtles, and waterfowl, and some of these animals are endangered, too.

Each tour lasts for approximately half an hour, and they run on schedule throughout the center’s opening hours.

The Meadows Center also offers several other ways to explore Spring Lake.

You can go on kayak tours, join special events and programs for people of all ages, and a self-guided trail across the Wetlands Boardwalk.

If you’re at the center this weekend, you can even go for a guided boardwalk tour.

The center is also home to an impressive Discovery Hall that boasts a 1,000-gallon aquarium filled with various native fish, such as San Marcos Salamanders, Texas Blind Salamanders, and Fountain darters.

There’s even a special aquarium for baby turtles and an exhibit dedicated to endangered species.

While at Discovery Hall, you’ll get to learn all sorts of information, including about the state’s water systems, and view interactive displays and multiscreen walls of video.

3. Wonder World Cave & Adventure Park

Looking for fun vacation destinations ?

Wonder World Cave & Adventure Park is a very unique, truly one-of-a-kind natural theme park.

It’s the site of America’s only accessible earthquake cave, and it’s also the very first show cave in Texas, opened as an attraction in 1903 after its discovery a decade prior.

It is also family-operated and family-owned, and it’s among the city’s most fun places to visit.

While there are many things you can enjoy at the theme park, its centerpiece is undoubtedly the Wonder Cave, which is the original dry-formed cave.

It was created naturally by the same earthquake that led to the Balcones Fault, and you can even see the fault in the cave ceiling.

Guided tours of the cave bring you underground, where you’ll learn about the many unique rock formations and the region’s interesting geological history.

At the end of your Wonder Cave exploration, you’ll be able to take the Stratavator from its base and travel up a whopping 120 feet to the park’s observation tower.

From here, you can clearly see the state’s geological features as you gaze out over the cave and the fault line, the uplift of Hill Country, and the diving points of the Gulf Coastal Plains.

After enjoying the cave, you can traverse the rest of the 70,000-square-foot amusement park.

There’s an Anti-Gravity House, a trackless motor train into a wildlife and animal park with its own petting zoo and a waterfall, and an exciting gem mining experience to try out.

This river is also fairly historic, as it’s one of North America’s oldest continuously inhabited locations with a 12,000-year history of human communities.

19. Mermaid March

Mermaid March

Mermaid March

One of the best, most one-of-a-kind things to see in San Marcos, Texas, is the Mermaid March , a quirky and vibrant experience.

This “march” is a collection of 10 eight-foot-tall statues of mermaids situated throughout the city, each uniquely painted and decorated to tell certain tales.

Many local folk tales feature mermaids, so it only makes sense that seeking out these statues and learning about what they represent is one of the coolest activities you can do in town.

The Mermaid March is a part-virtual experience, as you’ll go on a self-guided tour that brings you to each of the mermaids while providing you with information about their stories.

The base of each statue is identical, but none look alike, each holding different items and painted completely differently.

Some examples of the mermaids you’ll come across during your personal mermaid march are the Mirrachrome painted mysterious Liquid March by Darin Wood and a stunning mural of the local river’s ecosystem called Aqua Reina by Jamie Kimmel Shelton.

There’s also a mermaid covered entirely in intricate paintings of vegetation called Dianne by Morgan Egan and a tribute to the Coahuiltecan people called Before Us by Diana Weems.

These plaques all honor various fictional events that take place in the parallel universe of these stories.

Over 140 plaques across 30 countries and six continents have been erected, and this is one of them.

Located in San Marcos Town Square, the Nature of the Waters tells the tale of Aocwatt Stciwne, the Marshal of Gravity of Kcymaerxthaere, who was shot to death tragically in a rare gun incident orchestrated by Lt. Mdeu Hayz.

For fans of the strange, hunting down this plaque is one of the most enjoyable things to do in San Marcos, as it gives you another glimpse into this unique and unusual set of stories.

San Marcos artists open their studio doors for second annual art tour

San Marcos Studio Tour

Artists around San Marcos and Martindale are inviting visitors into their studios to see behind the scenes.

Artists have all heard some version of "I wish I could see inside your head," and these studio tours may be the closest some folks in San Marcos will get. The second annual San Marcos Studio tour returns from April 5-7, giving visitors some pre-eclipse inspiration over the weekend in artists' private workspaces.

A kickoff event at MotherShip Studios will bring guests together with local artists, and sample some of the work they can seek out when the tour begins. This should also be a good opportunity for meeting other art lovers (or even the art-curious) in an informal setting, with chances to meet up again over the weekend.

Studio tours — for the uninitiated — can be anything, as long as an artist is showing off their workspace. Sometimes they are set up as informal galleries, and sometimes there's little finished work in sight. Some artist studios are located one after another in communal buildings, while others are right inside an artist's home.

The real benefit, besides satisfying nosy artistic urges, is getting to talk to the artists about their process. Most who sign up are excited to explain how they work in the room where it happens. Many are also happy to show unique works that haven't made it into official shows yet; These works may be too fringe, or the artist simply hasn't decided what to do with them yet.

The MotherShip, which organizes the tour, is promoting the participating artists right now on Instagram. Each, identified with their tour stop number and one or two photographed works, has provided a quote or a short biography. Among them are Jamie Ruth Barnard's nearly abstract landscapes, Arthur Simon's high art rocks with eyes , and Jasna Boudard's immersive photo and video works.

So far, it looks like that's the only public list of participating artists, but a map will eventually be provided for easy navigating. A call for event hosts listed some potential activities: "scheduled demos, interactive workshops, studio parties, cookouts, guided tours, bike/walking tours, performances, live music, film screenings, and more!"

All artists living or working within San Marcos and Martindale city limits were invited to apply, so this broad group could contain anything. The submission form is closed for this year.

The San Marcos Studio Tour is free, but visitors may also donate to Mothership Studios, starting at $20 once or $5 monthly. More information about the tour and its organizer is available at mothershipstudiostx.com .

Houston's signature sanctuary

Texas chapel outfitted with rothko paintings breaks ground on $42 million expansion.

Houston’s iconic Rothko Chapel will undergo a substantial expansion that’s designed to enhance its spiritual and temporal missions. Dubbed Opening Space, the $42 million project will add new buildings just north of the existing Chapel on the other side of Sul Ross St.

Founded in 1971 by the artist Mark Rothko and philanthropists and art collectors John and Dominique de Menil, the Rothko Chapel receives more than 100,000 visitors from more than 100 countries each year. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the interior is known for its 14 Rothko panels that are designed to inspire reflection.

Rendering courtesy of ARO

The plan will add new buildings and other improvements.

The project, which broke ground April 17, is the next step in renovations to the original Chapel that took place between 2019 and 2021. Divided into two parts, the Phase 2 renovations include the construction of new buildings and landscaping improvements. Phase 2a will see the construction of the Administration and Archives Building and the creation of the Kathleen and Chuck Mullenweg Meditation Garden. Phase 2b will include a new Program Center, building a guest bungalow for speakers and fellows, and creating a tree-shaded plaza that will serve as a venue for events. Both phases are expected to be finished by 2026.

“The Chapel has never had the room that we need to fulfill our dual mission,” executive director David Leslie said in a statement. “The Opening Spaces project is not only about creating spaces that enable us to welcome more visitors, but also facilitating more enriching experiences of the art, deeper contemplation, and the social justice-focused community engagement embedded in our founders’ vision, which brings people together in dialogue and reflection across the many boundaries that separate us.”

The new buildings and landscape improvements are designed to enhance accessibility for visitors and further the mission of the Chapel as a place that welcomes all people regardless of which religious tradition they observe (including none at all). With the Chapel having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, the project will enhance the campus’ overall utility for the next 50 years.

When completed, the 6,600-square-foot Administration and Archives building will allow the public to access the Chapel’s archives and library. The building also includes a 30-person board room and offices for the organization’s staff.

Similarly, the 3,800-square-foot Program Center and courtyard will provide a space for lectures, presentations, and other events. It includes a 200-person room that can hold concerts, meetings, banquets, receptions, and more. A gallery space will allow for the display of artwork that corresponds to the Chapel’s other programming. The complete project is targeting LEED v4.0 certification, the Administration and Archives Building is targeting LEED Silver, and the Program Center is targeting LEED Gold, according to a release.

“This project will greatly enhance our campus, creating new outdoor spaces and facilities that will allow us to carry out our important work on behalf of human rights and interfaith dialogue,” Opening Spaces co-chairman Christopher Rothko added. “On the heels of our recent 50th anniversary, the work also gives us a welcome opportunity to lift up and celebrate those who have contributed to the design, building, and stewardship of the Rothko Chapel, including the de Menils, Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone, Gene Aubrey, Barnett Newman, and so many others. All of them shared a vision that brought together modern art and sacred space to promote human unity, solidarity, and justice. This vision is still as relevant today as it was 50 years ago, and I believe it will remain so for generations to come. Herein lies the core reason for Opening Spaces.”

During Phase 1 of the Opening Space campaign, the Chapel underwent a comprehensive restoration that included a new skylight, upgrades to the lighting and A/V systems, and improvements to the building’s infrastructure.

Companies participating in Phase 2 include New York City-based Architecture Research Office (ARO), Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW), and construction firm the Linbeck Group.

First Weekend in April

Art lovers will want to head on over to San Marcos the first weekend in April for the San Marcos Studio Tour!

The Kick-Off Party

The San Marcos Studio Tour will kick off with a free opening night event featuring a group exhibition of studio participants at the MotherShip warehouse gallery featuring one artwork from each artist. There will be a live printing demo, music by local musicians, a raffle giveaway, and complimentary drinks sponsored by local breweries. A map of all stops for the weekend studio tour will be provided. A catalog of tour participants featuring details on each artist, including images of work, and short statements about the artists will be available for purchase during the event.

Art lovers and artists alike will love exploring colorful and creative San Marcos during the San Marcos Studio Tour. This free, self-guided tour will feature more than 50 artists across San Marcos, Martindale, and surrounding areas. Artists will be showcasing their studio spaces and artwork during this inspiring and interactive weekend-long occasion. You will get an insider’s look into the artistic creative process - the messy workspaces, the paint-splattered floors, the at-home and garage studios, the cluttered art supplies, the inspirational walls of reference photos, and the clay-ridden wheels. These environments, though sometimes unpolished, are where the magic happens and creativity flourishes.

A map of all tour stops for the weekend will be available.
