Sailing around Donostia-San Sebastian, along the nearby coast (or anywhere really) and traditional wooden boats are our passion. Ostarte Sailing was born in 2017 by two young sailors from Gipuzkoa, Amuaitz Lertxundi and Edgar De Pedro . Our goal is to restore and share our maritime heritage by sailing. We offer a wide range of sailing experiences on classic yachts along the incredible Gipuzkoan coast. Sailing with us turns into something more than a simple boat trip.

We at OSTARTE SAILING aim to showcase yachts with history. Unique, hand-built vessels, which have been exploring the seas since last century, and right up to the present day. Our sailing boats that were created by naval craftsmen are full of history and boast exceptional designs.

LUCRETIA 1927

Lucretia is an emblematic Dutch yacht constructed in 1927, designed by the prestigious naval architect, G. De Vries Lentsch Jr. Its fine lines make it into a unique craft – elegant, full of history and style. It gives its passengers an unforgettable experience and is one of the oldest active yachts in our waters. It has an overall length is 19.3 metres and has a rigged sail surface of 180m2 – Bermudian Ketch. Built with the aim of giving his daughter a taste for the sea.

In 2018 Ostarte Sailing sailed the Tanit for the first time off the coast of Brittany. Finally, in May 2019 it sailed to Pasajes with the aim of getting a complete refit and to give it a new lease of life. After months of hard work and much affection, the Tanit once again shone brightly, becoming what it had always been, an agile seafaring yacht that was ready to share in our passion for classic boats and traditional sailing.

One August morning Lucretia appeared in the port of Pasajes, near Donostia. Amuaitz at that time was working at the Albaola Basque Sea Factory and Edgar in the «Mater» museum in the very same port. They had for some time been speaking and thinking about getting a boat and try to live their dream of sailing on the seas. It was love at first sight for Edgar and just after seeing the yacht he immediately called Amuaitz and they decided to speak with the boat owner. The craft was in a shocking state, it was easy to see that it needed many hours work to get it shipshape but they could also see its great potential. And that was the beginning of the history of OSTARTE SAILING.

3 Awesome Sailing Trips in San Sebastian

1. sail away with me – french basque coastline.

Starting from San Sebastian, this five-hour sailing voyage heads northeast toward the French town of Saint Jean de Luz. The first port of call on this fully private experience is the seductive Basque town of Hondarribia (still technically in Spain). From here the boat officially crosses the border into France and slowly makes its way onto the charming Corniche coastline.

Further along these waters is a picturesque bay in Saint Jean de Luz where the vessel will drop anchor for a few hours. Spend your time swimming in the beautifully brisk waters and enjoy a picnic for lunch. Sail back to San Sebastian in the afternoon with the summer breeze guiding you back. Feel the wind in your hair and revel in the freedom of being out at sea.

Starting times for this odyssey are 10am or 4pm (depending on the time of year). Groups of up to 12 people can be accommodated with a minimum of 2 guests. 2. The Call of the Big Blue – Spanish Basque Coastline

• The best time of year to visit San Sebastian , weather-wise, is June to August. This is the summer period and guarantees the best climate. However, the pintxos bars can get crowded during the summer. So if you want to visit the city without tourists, consider coming in May or September. The shoulder season offers a quieter version of Donostia.
• There are several ways to arrive in San Sebastian. Most come via plane, others via bus and some visit as part of a great Basque road trip. If you want to fly in, San Sebastian has three airports located nearby. For example, travelers can fly into Bilbao and then take the bus. Spain also has a wonderful network of trains which you could consider taking.
• First-time visitors to the city should stay in the Old Town (Parte Vieja). This is the historic center where you can get lost in its winding alleys, magnificent churches, incredible architecture and popular pintxos bars.

If you are looking for a private sail for yourself or for your family and friends, this is where you will want to book! We wanted to book an entire sailboat and be able to customize the trip throughout the day. The captain (Uni) delivered beyond our expectations. We were greeted at the dock and welcomed onto his 42 ft Beneteau. Uni is a professional sailor who has a lifetime of experience handling the seas. He welcomes all his guest to join in on the sailing experience by pulling lines, steering the helm, tacing the boat, etc.. If relaxing is more your thing, you can also layout and do absolutely nothing! Our day included sailing from San Sebastian to neighboring towns and beaches and dropping anchor to swim and have wine and food. Uni layed out a great spread of pinxtos, cervezas, wine and bread. Alex met us at our hotel and escorted us the harbor and once we motored out to the open water, Alex set up two fishing poles to troll as we sail -unfortunately only two babies took the bait and were quickly released back into the water.Learning about the history of fishing and whaling around the Basque coast was part of our cultural emersion in this beautiful area of Spain. Our day ended with cocktails and apps as the sunset over La Concha bay. Thank You Alex and Unai you gave us a very special memory to carry home. Sailing in San Sebastian

San Sebastian is a small, picturesque city on the Bay of Biscay, which is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the French and Spanish coasts. The city’s crown jewel is La Concha Bay, a natural harbour which has provided shelter to ocean-bound ships thoroughout the city’s seafaring history, which you can see reflected on the city’s coat of arms – an open ocean schooner with sails unfurled. Until the 17th century, Donostia (San Sebastian’s name in the local Basque language) was one of the most important ports in northern Spain.  Sailing out from the picturesque old port is one of the most authentic experiences you can enjoy in our city.

Just like merchants and fishermen have done for centuries, we will set sail in search of adventure. We will head out through the steep, rocky coasts and enjoy the marine life that abounds in this area. We always have fishing rods at the ready in case guests want to set a line for tuna or mackerel. Dolphin sightings are common, and we’ve even seen the occasional whale.  After a delightful sail we will anchor in the bay, which gives us a chance to to have a swim and enjoy a sunny afternoon in the bay with an onboard picnic.

This experience is not complete without a good lunch made of local products. We will make some pintxos, the Basque tapas that have made our city famous and wash them down with a glass of good wine. All this in a privileged setting such as the bay of La Concha. It’s certainly one of the best moments of the day.
