How to get to Vilamoura?

The closest international airport from Vilamoura is Faro (also known as the Algarve Airport). Particularly during the summer months, this airport is served by a large number of legacy, charter and budget airlines with connections from most major airports in the UK, Ireland, central Europe and Scandinavia.

If you want to find out more about destinations from Faro, you can find an updated destination map on the official Faro Airport website here .

Get an airport transfer

Getting from Faro Airport to Vilamoura is straightforward. You should first check if your hotel or package holiday provider if they already offer an airport transfer – in many cases it will be included in your trip.

If not, we suggest you use a private transfer to get from the airport to Vilamoura, particularly if you’re travelling in a group, as prices start at just about €7 per person if travelling by coach or €35 for a private car with space for up to four people with luggage.

One good option for booking a transfer is with Get Your Guide here . Enjoy a private and door-to-door transfers from Faro Airport to your accommodation. No shuttles, this vehicle is only for you and your party with an English-speaking driver. It’s only €28.40 for a group of four people!

Public transportation to Vilamoura

Although, considering the good availability of (low cost) transfers, it almost doesn’t make sense to opt for public transport, but you also have that alternative.

First you need to take bus 14 or 16 from Faro Airport (the bus stop is just outside the terminal building with a blue sign saying ‘Bus to Faro’). Exit at the final stop at Faro bus station.

Busses run roughly every half an hour during the day (you can find the schedule here: Line 14 and Line 16 ) , the ride takes about 20 minutes and a single ticket is €2.35, which can be purchased from the driver.

Walk from Próximo’s bus station ( Próximo is the local bus operator, their website is in Portuguese) over to the bus station of Eva bus (the company running the long distance coaches in the Algarve).

There are frequent services during the day, however since the last bus leaves Faro already at 6.45 pm, this is not a good option for flights arriving late. You will need to buy your ticket at the ticket office in the Eva bus station prior to departure, as the bus drivers do not sell tickets. A single ticket will cost you just €4.10 and the return €8.20.

By subscribing to our newsletter , you will never miss out on tips and advice about the Algarve and visiting Portugal.

Alternatively, for those looking to rent a car there are numerous car rental agencies located both directly in Faro Airport or within close proximity to it (usually offering a free transfer to their office). A good website to compare the prices of car rentals is Carrentals.com .

When searching for the right car, you should keep in mind that you will usually require a credit card to provide a deposit for any potential damages caused to the vehicle. For peace of mind, we would always recommend that you also take out comprehensive vehicle insurance. You may want to check out icarhireinsurance.com for cheaper insurance options, so that you don’t end up paying a substantial amount of money should there be any damage to the car.

Driving in the Algarve

When driving to Vilamoura and generally in the Algarve, you have the choice between the free, but slow and usually very crowded N125 road and the A22 motorway. Please note however, that the motorway is subject to road tolls and that you will need to rent a toll device from your car rental company to pay for the charges.

Attention: Since the A22 is an electronic toll only road, there is no option to pay with cash or card at the entrance gates or exit the motorway, so make sure you rent the device if you intend to use the motorway.

If you’ve never driven in Portugal before, you may want to read our article: Driving in Portugal  for some handy tips and advice.

Vilamoura is very different from the rest of the towns on the Algarve. While most of the others were originally fishing villages that were transformed into beach resorts, Vilamoura is a completely new development.

It’s characterised by carefully manicured lawns, modern apartment blocks, luxury hotels, golf-themed pubs, and of course the marina that the town is built around. You’ll also find plenty of beach clubs and golf courses, a casino, and plenty of companies offering boat trips.

Vilamoura has a long and spacious sandy beach, Praia de Vilamoura, with a pier on either side of the beach, and a lighthouse on each pier. The water in between is calm and welcoming, and behind the beach there are restaurants and bars where you can get refreshments or have a meal overlooking the sea.

Praia de Vilamoura

Praia da Falésia, one of the Algarve’s most picturesque beaches, is just a 15-minute drive from Vilamoura, and, from Vilamoura, it’s also fairly quick to get to other beaches like Praia dos Olhos de Água (17 minutes) and Praia de Vale do Lobo (20 minutes).

Is Vilamoura right for me?

While Vilamoura has a lot of things going for it, it doesn’t have the “quaintness” that former fishing villages like Ferragudo or Alvor have. Even Albufeira , one of the largest resort towns on the Algarve, was once a fishing village and so has an old town and several historical attractions.

If quaintness is important for you, you may want to consider another nearby Algarve town. Of course, you don’t have to stay in one of those towns to visit them: the Algarve is a small place and it’s easy to get around by car or taxi. Many people choose to stay in Vilamoura, with its great restaurants and boutique shops, and to take day trips to each of these towns.

What Vilamoura does have, however, is high-quality options like high-end hotels and restaurants. There are also plenty of spas and beach clubs where you can pamper yourself as well.

If you’re planning on exploring the nearby towns and beaches, but don’t drive, Vilamoura may not be the best option for you. There is no train station in Vilamoura, and bus services often require you to go into Faro, so you’ll probably need to get a taxi to the nearest train station at Loulé to get around.

Getting to Vilamoura

From faro airport.

Faro Airport , the Algarve’s regional airport, is less than 30 minutes away from Vilamoura by car, and there are plenty of ways to get from the airport to Vilamoura including airport transfer, shuttle bus, and public transport.

  • Airport transfer: An airport transfer is one of the easiest ways to get from Faro Airport to your accommodation: there’s no need to pick up the rental car, negotiate with taxi drivers, or navigate the local public transport system. You’ll find several companies, including Welcome Pickups , that offer Faro Airport transfers to Vilamoura.
  • Rental car: If you want to explore the Algarve, especially its beaches, the best way to get around is by car.
  • Shuttle bus: Because there isn’t a direct public transport link between Faro Airport and Vilamoura, the easiest affordable option is to book a seat on a shuttle bus. Tickets can be booked on hoppa.com.
  • Taxi (or Uber): Taxis are available from outside Faro Airport, and Ubers are increasingly available as well.
  • Public transport: There is no direct bus or train between Faro Airport and Vilamoura. If you’re taking public transport, the easiest option is to take the airport bus (bus #16) into Faro and then another bus onto Vilamoura.
  • Bus: Buses are available from Faro to Vilamoura, and can be booked on Eva-Bus.com .
  • Train: There is no train station in Vilamoura. You’ll need to take the train from Faro to Loulé, and then to take a taxi from Loulé to Vilamoura.

From Lisbon & the rest of Portugal

  • Bus: Long distance buses are available between cities like Lisbon and Porto and Vilamoura and can be booked on rede-expressos.pt .
  • Train: Vilamoura doesn’t have a train station, so you’ll need to take the train to Loulé and then get a taxi onto Vilamoura. Discounts are available if you book your train tickets are in advance, and tickets can be booked on cp.pt .

Not a great deal remains of Parderne's castle, but given its antiquity this is not surprising. Built from sandstone and earth the castle sits on a promontory overlooking the Quarteira River around 10 kilometres inland from Albufeira.

The site was originally used by the Romans in the 2nd century but the castle we see today was constructed in the 12th century by the Berbers. The fort passed backwards and forwards between its muslim creators and the christian re-conquerors over the following century.

In 1248 the castle was finally captured by the Portuguese forces who went on...

9. Albufeira Archaeological Museum

Museu Municipal de Arqueologia

Located in Albufeira's old town, just behind the beach, is this archeological museum. The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Albufeira is housed in, what was until the late 1980s, the town hall. Despite its diminutive appearance the museum is surprisingly spacious inside.

Much of the collection was excavated from the local area by Father José Manuel Semedo de Azevedo, a keen amateur archeologist. Objects were collected from nearby sites such as the castle in Paderne, Roman villa in Retorta, the necropolis of Morgado da Lameira and the old parish church. These include such highlights...

10. Igreja de São Sebastião

São Sebastião, Albufeira

The aesthetically pleasing, whitewashed church of São Sebastião (Saint Sebastian) on Praça Miguel Bombarda is thought to date back to the early 18th century, having been re-built on the site of a 16th century church.

It features a mix of architectural styles, including a dome and a multi-coloured wooden altarpiece. The main doorway is of the Baroque style and there is a Manueline side door. The inside of the church contains a number of interesting statues, including an image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Piety), thought to date from the 16th century....

11. Igreja Matriz de Albufeira

Albufeira church - Igreja Matriz

The parish church (Igreja Matriz) in Albufeira is one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the Algarve. Built in the late 18th century it stands on the site of an earlier church which was converted from a pre-existing mosque.

Inside there is a single nave with four neoclassical side altars which contain notable artworks featuring St. Louis and St. Peter. Also worthy of note is the filigree stucco-work on the barrel vault ceiling.

However, it is in the chancel, beyond an imposing triumphal arch with its Cross of Aviz, that you will find the main reason for...

Vilamoura  does not refer to a city of Portugal, but rather to an area located on the southern coast of the Algarve region, between Faro and Albufeira.

Located near the cities of  Quarteira, Loulé  and Albufeira , it is a touristic complex known by water sport lovers and golf players, due to the several clubs located in the area.

Things to do in Vilamoura

Being a very touristic area, Vilamoura doesn’t have much more to offer from a  cultural point of view . If you are looking for some more authentic Portuguese experiences, the best choice is to go on a  day trip to Loule , a traditional city that hosts a market everyday of the week except on Sundays.

The center of Loule  is pedestrian, and it is characterised by colourful houses and small shops. The atmosphere is unique and very quiet, offering a completely different experience from the chaos and the hotels of Vilamoura.

Visit  Vilamoura  if you are looking for a  beach holiday , relaxing walks along the coast of the Marina. If you love fishing, then Vilamoura is a great destination for deep sea fishing.

Translated as the Beach of Cliffs, Praia de Falésia is characterised by its incredible red backdrop, giving you the impression you’re in a coastal Grand Canyon, faced with a crystal-clear ocean. Stretching all the way from Vilamoura in the east to Olhos de Água in the west, the coastal walk will take you two hours. At low tide you may spot people collecting small clams called conquilhas from the shoreline – they’re a local speciality.

2. Karting Almancil

5. Tope Fixe – Cruzeiros de Pesca

Join a boat trip with Tope Fixe from Vilamoura marina and local fishermen will whisk you out to the hotspots of the Algarve coast, where you are bound to catch something for dinner. The boats are equipped with sonar, GPS, radio and life jackets. The crew are on hand to help, however much – or little – experience you have.

Mercado do Peixe ( fish market ) area in central Aveiro Portugal

Every seaside resort has a fresh fish market, and the Mercado do Peixe in Quarteira is where local restaurants get their daily catch. Every Wednesday the weekly market brings local people and tourists to check out the produce and perhaps pick up some shrimp or sole for the barbie.

7. Nauticdrive Water Sports Centre

8. Algarve Sea Safaris

Dolphins swimming on the surface, photographed from experience boat on the coast of Albufeira, Algarve Portugal.

The company is committed to marine preservation and ecology awareness so you can rest assured that your seafaring activities will not endanger the ecosystem.

Vilamoura, Portugal, has established itself as a chic, fashionable, and popular location to live in Portugal. Indeed, even the rich and famous have staked their claim in this bustling resort in the Algarve region, where the sun beckons, the sandy beaches invite you to enjoy yet another day in paradise, and there is always some activity to get involved with, should you so desire.

In this article, we’ll dive into what makes Vilamoura such a desirable area in Portugal before running over some practical information you may not be aware of. We will also delve into some of the best things to do in and around Vilamoura.

Why Vilamoura?

portugal vilamoura

This is without mentioning two excellent beaches nearby with golden sands — Praia de Vilamoura (Vilamoura Beach) in the east and Praia da Falésia (Falesia Beach) to the west, plus the many more beaches you’ll find hugging the Algarve Coast in either direction. It is not difficult to see why Vilamoura is so popular with expats. Those who like to shop in style will also be happy with the wide range of options, from authentic, local craft stores to the most prestigious international brands.

For those who come alive in the evenings, there are many nightclubs, bars, and excellent restaurants to choose from. The best DJs also haunt Vilamoura, and the Vilamoura casino offers a thrill for those who are looking for an adrenaline rush.

There are also many activities to choose from, which we’ll run over later in the article – from water sports like scuba diving to yoga and live music, there is something for every taste.

Alongside these factors, arguably the biggest draw is the climate of Vilamoura. Perfect, sunny days and high temperatures await, even in the winter months. Plus, you are conveniently located close to Faro Airport, making international transport easy. Indeed, it is not difficult to see why Vilamoura has fast become a favorite with expats.

Property prices

Vilamoura lies in the Loulé municipality, which is one of the more expensive real estate areas in the Algarve. The average asking price for property in Loulé stood at €5,191 per square meter in 2023. If you were to look for property for sale close to Vilamoura Marina or the city center, this would cost you more than buying in a less in-demand area.

Property types

You can find many options if you’re interested in Vilamoura, Portugal, real estate, from modern apartments to quaint townhouses. Vilamoura is known for its luxury properties, and for both lifestyle buyers and investors, there are ample opportunities. Bear in mind that luxury properties in Portugal are generally very good value for money. You should be able to find exceptional properties that are significantly cheaper than their equivalents in other Western European countries.

In Silves, many enjoy a stroll through the old town in search of coffee and pastries.

Silves, Portugal; a tourism guide for 2024

Silves is a historic town that was originally the ancient capital of the Algarve. During the Moorish era (9-12th century), Silves was a major stronghold and important trading centre. From the solid red-brick castle, the Moors defended the entire region, while from the harbour, boats sailed down the Arade River to trade with North Africa.

Today, Silves is peaceful and unhurried, but remnants of this illustrious past can be seen scattered throughout the town. This includes the imposing Castelo de Silves, heavily fortified gateways and the Gothic Se cathedral.

For your day trip, Silves is a joy to explore and has a distinctly Portuguese ambience, with open-air cafes, cobbled streets and a relaxed pace of life. Along with its rich history and fascinating sights, Silves lies within a scenic region, set along the banks of the slow-flowing Rio Arade and surrounded by the rolling hills of the Algarve countryside.

Silves is the best day trip of the central Algarve region and is highly recommended during your holiday or tour of the Algarve. This article will show why you must visit Silves and how to get the most from your trip here. Related articles: Algarve top 10 – The best day trips in the Algarve

Highlights of Silves

Castelo de Silves

The Castelo de Silves – The most impressive castle of southern Portugal, and from where the Moors ruled over the entire Algarve.

Largo do Município and Portas da Cidade Silves

The Portas da Cidade – The heavily fortified gateway that leads into the historic centre of Silves, which sits on the delightful Largo do Município plaza.

Sé de Silves

The Se cathedral - The mighty Gothic cathedral that was constructed on the site of a Moorish Mosque, and was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1755.

Largo do Município and Portas da Cidade Silves

The Portuguese ambience of Silves – The town has an authentic Portuguese atmosphere and a relaxed pace of life compared to the touristy resort towns.

Why Visit Silves?

Silves may only be a small town, but there is a lot to see, and it is a great destination for a day trip. No other place in the Algarve can rival Silves' long and varied history, while the castle is a truly unique attraction of southern Portugal.

Silves has a completely different ambience to the hectic coastal towns, and is a great location to experience typical Portuguese daily life. There is the daily market with stalls selling local produce, there are bustling cafes filled with locals, and restaurants serving traditional Portuguese dishes. It may not take long to fully explore Silves, but you will enjoy all of your time spent here.

Largo do Município and Portas da Cidade Silves

At the entrance to Silves castle is the statue of King Sancho I, who attacked and stormed the castle in 1189

A day trip to Silves

Silves is one of the best destinations in the Algarve for a day trip, and there is decent public transport from the major tourist centres of Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira.

It takes three hours to fully see Silves. Usually, a day trip is longer to include lunch or to reduce the pace of sightseeing under the intense summer sun.

The historic centre of Silves is compact and can be easily explored on foot, but there are steep cobbled streets leading up to the castle. As with all sightseeing in the Algarve, it is best to start earlier in the day, when temperatures are slightly lower.

Silves is an excellent day trip, but it rarely gets that crowded with tourists. It will be significantly less busy than the other popular day trip destinations such as Lagos, Faro or Albufeira.

If you are driving to Silves, there is a large car park to the southwest of the town (GPS: 37.1848, -8.4420). Never try to drive in the historic centre as the roads are narrow and there is almost no car parking.

The main bus stop of Silves is next to this car park and close to the tourist information (see the map in the following section). Silves train station is 1.5km to the south of the town, and the walk is not very pleasant as part of it follows a busy road with no footpaths. Insight: Other recommended day trips in the Algarve include Faro, Loule and Olhão. Related articles: Faro guide - Loule guide - Olhão guide

Sights of the tour: 1) Tourist Information office 2) Mercado Municipal (market) 3) Ponte Romana bridge 4) Rua Elias Garcia (shopping street) 5) Praça do Município 6) Portas da Cidade (gateway) 7) Câmara Municipal de Silves 8) Museu Municipal de Arqueologia 9) Igreja da Misericórdia de Silves 10) Silves Cathedral 11) Castelo de Silves 12) Muralhas da cidade (town walls) 13) Cruz de Portugal (a medieval cross)

Ponte Romana bridge Silves

The name of the Ponte Romana (3) (Roman Bridge) implies the bridge was constructed during the Roman rule of Portugal, but was actually constructed in 1445. The bridge spans the Rio Arade, which is a tidal river even though it is 13km upstream.

Portas da Cidade Silves

The Portas da Cidade (6) gateway has a narrow entrance that immediately turns left. This was to prevent a large-scale attack or a charge by horses.

Rua da Sé Silves

The Rua da Sé that is the main street up from the Portas da Cidade to the castle

Rua da Sé Silves

The Moorish ruins within the castle walls

Muralhas da cidade town walls silves

The town walls (12) to the east of the Largo do Município, are very scenic and rarely get any tourists.

Cruz de Portugal Silves

The Cruz de Portugal (13) is a 15th-century medieval cross, which is historically significant but is only a minor tourist attraction.

A small group tour of Silves?

Small group tours are a great way to explore the Algarve and are a chance to meet fellow travellers. These tours remove the hassle of public transport, provide knowledgeable guides and pack a lot of sightseeing into a single day. We have worked with GetYourGuide.com for the previous six years, and some of their best tours of Silves include:

A holiday to Silves

The majority of visitors to Silves are day-trippers, and very few even consider a night's stay within the town. This is a shame, as the town offers a peaceful setting, numerous restaurants and a true Portuguese experience, which is difficult to find in the Algarve.

If you are touring the Algarve, do consider Silves in place of the chaotic resort towns along the coastline. Silves offers excellent value for money, with all restaurants and cafes priced for locals and not over-inflated for tourists.

Accommodation in Silves and the surrounding area tends to be much cheaper, and this is due to the distance from the coastline, 12km to the south. For a holiday in Silves, it is best to have a car.

The map below shows the best accommodation and rental rooms in Silves. If you adjust the dates to your trip, it will display current prices and availability.

The history of Silves

Silves was founded by the Romans, but it flourished under the North African Moors. The zenith of this era was in 1054 when Al-Mu'tamid commanded over the entire Algarve and parts of southern Spain.

During the 12th century, Silves was subjected to continued fighting, as the newly established Catholic Portugal tried to drive the Muslim Moors from the Algarve.

The castle was the focus of numerous battles; it was sacked by King Leon in 1160, sieged by King Sancho I in 1189 and then recaptured by a powerful Moorish army led by Amir al-Mu'minin in 1191. The final defeat of the Moors was in 1243, but this ultimately led to the demise of Silves, with the severing of trade routes to North Africa.

In 1755 the town was badly damaged by a massive earthquake, which destroyed much of the castle and cathedral. The earthquake also caused huge landslides that altered the flow of the Arade River and prevented it from being a navigable port. Since then, Silves has remained a minor town, and a centre for agriculture.

Travel to Silves

The easiest method to travel to Silves is by car. There is a large car park to the southwest of the town (GPS: 37.184949, -8.441779) and it is just a short walk to the historic centre.

Public transport within the central Algarve is very limited, but it is possible to travel to Silves from all of the main tourist areas (Albufeira, Lagos, Lagoa and Portimão).

Advice: Before your day trip to Silves, check and plan the route by public transport, as services can be very intermittent.

The train is the best option from Lagos, Faro and Portimão, but Silves train station is 1.5km south of the town. For the latest train timetable, please visit the Comboios de Portugal (CP) website: www.cp.pt/ StaticFiles/ horarios/ regional/ comboios-regionais-vila -real-s.antonio -lagos.pdf (This is a pdf and may download on mobile phones)

There is a direct bus service from Albufeira to Silves (45min, €4.10), but it has only a few daily departures. For the latest bus timetables, please see the Vamus bus website: vamusalgarve.pt

The Algarve regional railway in the central Algarve follows a bizarre route and doesn't connect to any of the major towns.

Silves Castle

The finest tourist attraction of Silves is the imposing castle that dominates the skyline. The castle dates from the 7th century, but the red sandstone brick battlements seen today originate from the 12th century, at the height of the fighting between the Christian Crusaders and the African Moors.

This constant fighting led to the construction of the castle's massive fortifications and ingenious methods to survive an extended siege. These features included a rain-fed cistern, which was so effective it was used by the town up until the 1920s.

Within the castle, there have been extensive archaeological excavations, and from the battlements, there are wonderful views over the town. At the entrance to the castle is a statue of King Sancho I, who led the first significant victory by the Portuguese in the Algarve by storming the castle in 1189.

Insight: You may wonder how the castle has remained in such a great state of preservation for so long. This is due to a major "restoration" project in the 1940s, which rebuilt most of the towers and battlements.

Silves or Loulé?

Silves and Loulé are both popular day trips for visitors who are based along the Algarve coastline. Both are historic towns and provide a chance to experience typical Portuguese daily life, but they are very different and will appeal to varying groups of tourists.

Loulé is much larger, being a bustling city, with a lively daily market and more shops. Silves has more character and charm, with an extensive history and impressive tourist attractions. In our opinion, Silves is the better destination for a day trip.
