The best school trips of the past in and around Birmingham

The school trip was the best part of any pupil's year

Remember Birmingham from days gone by with our nostalgia newsletter

Pack your lunch, partner up with your best mate, and get your permission form signed by your parents - we're going on a school trip.

School trips are a tradition for kids in Birmingham - and we've got some pretty great destinations in the city, in the past and the present.

Our central location makes it easy for us to get a coach to places outside the city too, so Brummie kids have been all over the map.

Here's just a few of our favourite school trips nearby - with some chosen by you.

The Thinktank was the go-to place for any science teacher organising a trip for their class.

Did we learn anything? Maybe. Did we have fun messing around with all of the interactive exhibits, getting our grimy hands on priceless inventions, and eating out in the Science Garden? Oh, yes we did.

There is now a Spitfire gallery at the Thinktank with planes hanging from the ceiling, celebrating Castle Bromwich's role in Spitfire production.

Paintballing

There's a few sites nearby for paintballing, the closest ones being at Bassett's Pole, or the Delta Force out past Solihull.

There's a unique teenage joy to absolutely leathering your teachers with paintballs and paint bombs, and knowing they can't put you in detention for it. Take that, Mr. Willetts.

  • Black Country Living Museum

The Black Country Living Museum's sweet shop in 2002 with two children looking in through the glass - filled to the brim with delicious treats from days gone by.

The Black Country Living Museum is where Brummie children came to learn more about their extended family - their Black Country cousins.

A superb place to learn about industrial history from guides fully committed to their characters in costumes. The old sweet shop on the corner was the bit that obviously stuck out to my 10 year-old mind.

Black Country Bugle Annual 2022

school trip ideas birmingham

The latest issue of the Black Country Bugle Annual is here providing a colourful and memorable look back at all aspects of Black Country life.

It’s all here in compelling stories and features, and fascinating rare photographs.

The new instalment is available now at retail outlets and online

Sea Life Centre

The Sea Life Centre was another science teacher fave, right in the city centre.

The classes that visit naturally split into two - the kids who love the gross deep sea creatures and nightmarish crabs, and the nervous ones who stood as far away as they could from the glass.

  • Warwick Castle

Two knights in armour fighting over a Lady in costume at Warwick castle in 1998.

Trips to Warwick Castle really took off in the late 70s and early 80s when the Tussaud's group bought out the site.

For kids interested in knights and royalty, this was a blast. Hopefully, you got to go on a decent day when the re-enactors came out to play, showing off their massive siege engines.

Laser Quest

I remember a few similar places being available in the city at some point, but Laser Quest was the one.

Running around in the dark, blasting your mates with red lasers? Class. A thousand curses upon those who found ways to block the laser from reaching the sensor on your vest though, you cheaters.

Drayton Manor

The teachers always saved trips to theme parks like Drayton Manor for the end of the school year, after you'd finished your exams and such - and it was a perfect place to officially enter the summer holidays.

Built on the site of a ruined mansion and an Army training camp, Drayton Manor really came to life in the 80s. You went on the Shockwave stand-up rollercoaster to really prove that you were the hardest in your friendship group.

  • Alton Towers

Some of the first people to try the Oblivion ride at Alton Towers in 1998.

Alton Towers was the theme park for the older kids, or if your school was minted. One of the most popular theme parks in the country, and only an hour and a half up the M6 by coach.

Nemesis and Oblivion were the big new rides in the 90's, and Air followed in the new millennium. There was plenty to do for those squeamish about the big rides too.

Cannon Hill Nature Centre

The Nature Centre was cheap, yet cheerful alternative to a full-blown zoo trip.

Hopefully your teachers took you on a warm, sunny day, so you could actually see the animals outside of their hiding spots. Locals might remember the saga of Babu the Red Panda, who escaped his enclosure in 2005, only to be found four days later hanging out in Moseley.

school trip ideas birmingham

For the aforementioned full-blown zoo, it's back to the Black Country for Dudley Zoo .

The Lemur Wood opened in 2005, and it's been a hit ever since. I remember liking it so much that I went back with my mom in tow, and a lemur robbed a whole pack of cigarettes from her bag and ran away. The keepers were not impressed.

Great places for school trips around Birmingham

Great places for school trips around Birmingham

There’s no need to travel miles to find something fun to do with your class. Birmingham is a perfect place for school trips as there is so much to do - you can find activities to suit every year group and every subject.

We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite places that we think you and your students will be guaranteed to enjoy.

Sea Life Centre

The Sea Life Centre is amazing for school trips. It’s a popular attraction for primary schools with lots of activities for students to do inside! There are more than 2,000 creatures to see including sea turtles, sharks and even penguins.

There is a wide range of talks and demonstrations throughout the day, many including interesting facts about marine habitats - making it perfect for KS2 students who are learning about living things, natural environments or how to protect our oceans.

Cadbury world

Are you and your students a big fan of chocolate and want to know how it’s made? Well, then Cadbury world is just the place for you! More than 2,000 groups visit each year, and it has become a hotspot for school trips (mostly because of the free chocolate!).

The chocolate-filled attraction offers curriculum-linked educational sessions for both primary and secondary schools. KS1 and 2 can benefit from talks on the Victorians, rainforests and of course the chocolate making process while KS3 to 5 are able to learn about everything from geography and history to marketing and business.

ThinkTank

The ThinkTank is an award-winning science museum based in Birmingham’s city centre. While visiting pupils can explore a range of exhibitions and galleries and get to grips with over 200 hands-on displays on science and technology.

Learning sessions are available for early years right the way through to KS5 so, there really is something for everyone! For the time or budget conscious, the museum offers a series of science-based, live stream theatre shows on topics such as light, space and energy transfer so, you can take a trip without ever leaving the classroom.

The Library Of Birmingham

If your class is into reading, then the Library of Birmingham is the perfect place to spend a morning or afternoon. Visits to the library are totally free and can be done on any day of the week. The library even has a children’s section which provides comfortable spaces to curl up and read, picture books for little ones, graphic novels and dark romance for teens as well as study spaces and wifi.

In addition to this the library also hosts a number of fun activities and story sessions which sometimes includes visits from the authors themselves! They also have friendly and knowledgeable children’s  librarians on hand to help you and your students with any queries you might have.

School trips are a great opportunity to learn about the world but also to connect with your students and with so many great places on your doorstep you don’t have to go too far! If Birmingham is a little far for you though, then why not take a look at our blogs about some other school trip friendly places in the Black Country and Coventry .

Where will you take your students on their next trip?

And don’t forget, if you’re looking for a job within the education sector then please don't hesitate to get in touch or check out our teaching vacancies .

School trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Being one of Birmingham’s best attractions, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers something for everyone, be it one of their four stunning glasshouses showing tropical rainforest to arid desert, playground, tearoom and garden gift shop all surrounded by some of the most beautiful gardens in the UK.

There are four glasshouses which range from their exotic   Tropical House through to their   Subtropical,   Mediterranean   and Arid Houses. There is a large lawn in front of the glasshouses with a range of beds and shrubberies around its perimeter. Overall, the character is that of a Victorian public park with a bandstand set in 15 acres (6.1 ha) of landscaped greenery.

Outdoor Learning

How do bananas and pineapples grow? From which plant can both houses and clothing be made? Why is white chocolate white, but milk chocolate brown? Why do cactus plants look so strange? What is a tenrec? Find out the answer to these questions and many more, as you explore our 4 spectacular glasshouses and 15 acres of flourishing gardens.

Here at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, they offer a `school trip` like no other. You can explore their unique   glasshouses   and experience an authentic rainforest adventure! Then, walk straight from experiencing hot and humid tropical conditions into a desert climate and observe the changes to plants due to the seasons. Then, wander down to the Alpine Yard and Rock Garden to marvel at the beautiful flora found on the Tundra.

The Gardens contain over 7,000 different plants from all around the world. Experience the humidity and smells of the Tropical House, look (but don’t touch!) with wonder at the carnivorous plants in the Subtropical House, admire the fruits and flowers of the Mediterranean House, and marvel at the bizarre and fascinating ways that cacti have developed to protect themselves in the harsh environment of the world’s deserts (Arid House). Don’t forget to allow plenty of time, in addition, to wander around the stunning grounds seeing the giant Koi Carp and Victorian Cascade in the Rock Garden, be amazed by the National Bonsai Collection in their Japanese Garden, stop and smell the many herbs in the Herb Garden, be fascinated by the exotic bird collection from all over the world, play on our amazing new Treetops Adventure playground and, you never know, bump into our free-roaming peacocks!
