Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough. 

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century. 

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well. 

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024. 

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.  

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek confirma 5 nuevas temporadas de distintas series

Además del esperado estreno de Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, las renovaciones afectan a todas las series de la franquicia actualmente en emisión

Nadie pone en duda que la pantalla pequeña es el auténtico hogar de Star Trek. En esa línea, Paramount+, la plataforma de streaming de la responsable de la franquicia, ViacomCBS , acaba de anunciar nuevas temporadas y fechas de estreno para varias de sus series:

• Star Trek: Discovery , cuya temporada 4 se reanudará el 10 de febrero, tendrá quinta temporada.
• La temporada 2 de Star Trek: Picard llegará el 3 de marzo, y tendrá nuevo episodio semanal cada jueves. Su tercera temporada ya está en producción
• Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , la serie protagonizada por el Capitán Pike de Anson Mount que conocimos en la segunda temporada de Discovery, llegará el 5 de mayo. Al mismo tiempo se ha confirmado su segunda temporada.
• Star Trek: Lower Decks volverá con su temporada 3 este verano de 2022 y también se ha anunciado su cuarta temporada.

Alex Kurtzman , actual productor ejecutivo , ha enmarcado estos anuncios en la continuidad del proyecto iniciado hace cuatro años con el estreno de Discovery, cuando prometieron que iban a “convertir Star Trek en algo que no se había visto nunca”.

El hecho de que el anuncio se haya realizado desde Paramount+ refuerza la estrategia de ViacomCBS de centralizar toda la franquicia en su plataforma de streaming, pendiente de llegar a España junto a SkyShowtime durante 2022. Eso sí, Picard y Lower Decks conservan su distribución internacional a través de Prime Video, al menos por ahora.

Por último, remarcar que las grandes ausencias del anuncio han sido las posibles confirmaciones de series adicionales . A los que esperamos con ansia las aventuras de Philippa Georgiou en la Sección 31 no nos queda otra que seguir esperando…

Una nueva serie de Star Trek está oficialmente en camino: los primeros detalles de Starfleet Academy

CBS Studios y Paramount+ han anunciado formalmente Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, una nueva serie de Star Trek que seguirá a una nueva promoción de cadetes de la Flota Estelar.

La producción comenzará en 2024. Para celebrar el encargo de la serie, los directores y productores ejecutivos Alex Kurtzman y Noga Landau publicaron la siguiente declaración que da un poco de información sobre lo que será Star Trek: Starfleet Academy:

Además de Kurtzman y Landau, Gaia Violo, cocreadora de Absentia, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa y John Weber serán los productores ejecutivos de la serie.

El mes pasado se informó de la existencia de Starfleet Academy , donde supimos que Violo estaba involucrada en la serie.

Paramount+ cuenta con una amplia gama de series originales de Star Trek, como Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy y Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

New Star Trek shows: every future series, from Strange New Worlds to Lower Decks

From Lower Decks to Strange New Worlds, what's coming up?

It's a rich time for new Star Trek content, with streaming service CBS All Access building much of its content strategy around expanding the sci-fi franchise. If you're outside of the US, too, it's been pretty easy to keep up with it all, since Picard has released internationally on Amazon Prime Video, while Netflix has the rights to Discovery.

In April 2019, overseer Alex Kurtzman told THR that "The idea is to always have something" Star Trek-related on TV. "Two years from now, a show will end, there will be a little breath and then another show will begin."

While that ambitious plan for 2021 might be slowed down by this year's coronavirus-based TV production headaches, there's no doubt that CBS has enough content in the pipeline to back that up.  Seven Star Trek shows are publicly known right now, though a couple don't have titles or even a premise yet, and this includes ongoing seasons of Picard and Discovery.

Do Star Trek fans like the shows being made? As with any franchise that has a long and complicated history, it's really hard to figure out what the consensus is on Trek as it stands. But the volume and tonal range of what's in the works surely has to excite an audience that once enjoyed 18 years of unbroken Trek shows.

We expect to learn a lot more about these series when Star Trek takes over a whole series of panels at Comic Con at Home, starting on July 23.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Release date: August 6

Getting Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan was quite a win for this first adult animated Star Trek series, which takes place on the lower decks of the Cerritos, a less important Starfleet vessel. It's the first Star Trek animated series in decades, and features a pretty big name voice cast, including The Boys ' Jack Quaid. 

McMahan wrote one of the all-time best Rick and Morty episodes, Total Rickall, and co-created the recent Hulu series Solar Opposities, so hopefully the end result here will be good. Two seasons are on the way.

We're not sure where it'll be streaming outside of the US yet, though.

Star Trek Discovery season 3

Expected release date: late 2020

A third season of CBS All Access' flagship show Star Trek: Discovery finished filming a while back, and post-production has been ongoing. We're expecting this one to debut some time after Lower Decks has finished rolling out its 10 weekly episodes. 

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 has a killer hook, taking viewers 1,000 years into the future of the Star Trek timeline, which will presumably give the writers a lot of scope to tell big stories without any lore-based restrictions. 

Season 2 spent a little too long in the shadow of legacy characters, as well-acted as they were, so hopefully this season will shift focus back to the Discovery's own extremely likeable crew. 

Star Trek: Picard season 2

Expected release date: 2021

Star Trek: Picard season 2 is officially happening, but where the story will go is something of a mystery after the series' eventful finale, as Picard survived (sort of) the Romulans' attack on the synthetic world of Coppelius. In season 2, expect the show to deal with the fact that (spoiler alert!) Picard now has a synthetic body, as he found a way to cheat death. We're expecting more TNG cameos in season 2, after season 1 gave fans all-too-brief glimpses of Riker and Troi. We also know Whoopi Goldberg will be reprising her role as Guinan from that series. 

Our hope is that the writers will focus on making the crew of newer characters on the La Sirena a little easier to like; Star Trek: Picard doesn't yet have the complete-feeling ensemble that Discovery does, and that's a challenge they need to overcome. 

Filming on Picard season 2 was meant to happen this June, but has been delayed for obvious reasons. We still expect to see it next year at some point, though.

Section 31 (working title)

The most intriguing spin-off in this list, and reportedly the next one in line for filming after Discovery season 3. Michelle Yeoh will reprise her memorable role as the Mirror Universe's version of Philippa Georgiou, who joined the titular mysterious Federation organization in Discovery. Section 31 operates autonomously in protection of the Federation, and is commonly known as an extreme group that works for what it perceives as the greater good. This should show a side of the Star Trek universe we haven't seen yet.

Reports suggested Section 31 was supposed to film in May of this year, but naturally that's bound to be impacted by the current global health crisis. 

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Expected release date: 2021 (or later)

Star Trek Discovery season 2's versions of Captain Pike, Spock and Number One were evidently popular enough that they're getting their own spin-off. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles in what's been described as a 'classic' Star Trek series with an angle of optimism, which should sit nicely alongside the more densely serialized likes of Discovery and Picard. As a more direct prequel to the Original Series, it'll be about the crew of the Enterprise in the pre-Kirk days.

Expected release date: 2022

Star Trek has so far lacked a counterpart to Star Wars ' Rebels and The Clone Wars animated series, but that's set to change. A so-far untitled Star Trek CG TV series is coming to Nickelodeon in the US, and as of July 2019, it had a writers' team in place. Dan and Kevin Hageman, who worked on the excellent Netflix series Trollhunters, are the key creatives behind the show, suggesting that something of a high quality that doesn't talk down to its audience is in the works here. 

Little is known about the show, but it will have serialized storylines, and Kurtzman has suggested we might not even see it in action until after 2021. Like Lower Decks, two seasons of it have been ordered, which is partly motivated by the long lead times needed on animated series.

Untitled live-action show (possibly Star Trek: Starfleet Academy)

Back in January, series overseer Alex Kurtzman explained (as captured by Trek Core ) that two more live-action Star Trek series were yet to be revealed. 

With Strange New Worlds' later announcement, we found out about one, but what about the other? It remains a mystery, but a younger-focused series called Starfleet Academy was reportedly in the works back in 2018, from the Gossip Girl duo of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. An old Variety report about Kurtzman's work on Trek also suggested it was possible a series about the antagonist Khan Noonien Singh was also in the works.

We'll just have to wait and see on this last one. It might even be a different project we haven't heard about yet.

One thing's for sure, though: you'll get all the Star Trek you can handle over the next couple of years.

For five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery has taken audiences on the ride of a lifetime. With its series finale now in sight, I sat down with executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise at SeriesFest in Denver, Colorado to discuss the beloved show’s journey and what fans should expect from this ever-expanding television universe on Paramount Plus, before we say a proper farewell to the U.S.S. Discovery.

So for starters, what has Paradise enjoyed most about the evolution of Star Trek: Discovery , since it first premiered in September 2017?

“That’s a really great question,” Paradise said. “I have loved being a part of it. I joined halfway through season two, and it was starting to know what it was and it’s really found its way. I’ve really enjoyed the character arcs and getting to take them all to these different places. It’s also hard for me to separate out the evolution of the show from my evolution on the show and stepping into co-running it with [co-showrunner] Alex [Kurtzman] and starting to take over more of that in later seasons. It’s been the highlight of my career.”

Paradise is no stranger to television production. She was previously an executive producer on such television projects as Exes & Ohs and The Originals , but I wondered what it might be about her Star Trek: Discovery cast and crew that perhaps feels special.

“It’s like a big family. First of all, our cast is incredible. They’re all insanely talented actors but they’re lovely human beings. They approach one another and they approach the project from just a place of love and respect for one another and for the material, which is always a wonderful place to start. You can’t say enough of [actor] Sonequa [Martin-Green], our number one and the tone that she sets on the show and on the set. We have a lot of folks on the show and the crew who come back, year-after-year. They all really love the world of Trek and they love one another. We try and go bigger and better and bolder every season, and there’s never a feeling of Oh, we can’t do that . It’s always a feeling of How do we do that? ”

Since the original Star Trek series first premiered on television in 1966, the Star Trek story and fictional sci-fi universe has evolved into several iterations, including Star Trek: The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , Enterprise , Strange New Worlds and Picard - not to mention the numerous Star Trek movies over many decades, including the three recent blockbuster films, starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto, with another sequel in the works.

Throughout all of these years, Star Trek fans have remained quite loyal and vocal, both when they love a story and even when they don’t. So, how does Paradise and her Star Trek: Discovery creative team try to appease Trek fans, but also not allow the chatter to stop them from taking on some creative risks?

Paradise said, “I think the best way to answer that is we always try to honor what Trek is - where it came from, what is the DNA of any Trek series, which of course goes back to the original series, and then also honoring what is this version of Trek and knowing that it’s our job to make the best version of Discovery . Someone who loves Discovery may not love Strange New Worlds or someone who loves Strange New Worlds may not love Discovery. By design, these are all very different shows. To a certain degree, it has to be okay that not everyone is going to love this iteration. We always feel like if we can do justice to the franchise as a whole - what it means, do justice to the characters and do our best version of Discovery , then we will have succeeded.”

Ever since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended late last year, there have been signs of movement and optimism within the entertainment industry, but also a sense of some standstill with television and film productions. So, what is Paradise seeing around the current state of Hollywood?

“I think it depends on who you talk to,” Paradise said. “It feels a bit like a mixed bag to me. There are a lot of people who are still very much struggling - writers, crew members, directors - because things have not picked up in the way that they would normally at this particular time of year. By in large, there’s not really a pilot season, as we used to know it. That’s very difficult for people. Of course, there’s still a lot of wonderful opportunities, but it seems like the compression that happened - it’s the combo platter of the [Covid-19] pandemic and the strikes, just after that. It does feel condensed - there are fewer things but I feel like, to some degree, that had to happen because in the big balloon of streaming, that in retrospect, it doesn’t feel like it was necessarily sustainable. Hopefully it will ease up, sooner than later, and kind of calm down because there’s still a lot of people who are struggling to get back into work right now and I feel for them - it’s hard.”

On more of a positive note, when asked what Paradise is enjoying most about the television landscape today, she says that she feels there is a lot that can be done, applauding the way that every week, Star Trek: Discover y is a “cinematic storytelling into television,” though she admits that the visual design of Discovery is not sustainable for every network and studio.

While our real world faces divisive times with war, political unrest and other conflicts, I wondered if Paradise and her team keep in mind the real-life issues occurring, when crafting its stories for the screen on Star Trek: Discovery .

“That comes from just the DNA of the show itself. The original series did not shy away from what was happening societal at that time. It did not shy away from tackling those things in the way that it could. That’s one of the cool things about sci-fi - aliens can stand-in for another culture, different relationships can stand-in for whatever is happening in society at the time. That’s kind of baked into any Trek show, is that reflection of what’s happening in the world at that time via sci-fi and the different ways we could do it.”

Paradise added: “In Discovery , we were very much aware of that and very thoughtful about what are the types of stories we want to tell, how does that reflect certain things that are going on. Trek means so much to so many people and where people are actively looking to Trek to reflect themselves in some way or actively looking to Trek as an answer to what’s happening in society and for hope that, as divisive as things are right now, as challenging around the world and in our country, that there is hope and we can overcome it with our better selves.”

When asked about what fans can expect ahead in the remaining episodes of Star Trek: Discovery , which drop every Thursday during this final season, Paradise teases that fans “might see more of our bad guys this season.” She added: “We did not going into the season [knowing] that this would be our last season. We’re so fortunate - CBS Studios and Paramount Plus gave us the opportunity, after the fact, to go shoot some additional material, and I feel like the thing I just want to keep reiterating for fans of the show is it has a proper ending. Our Discovery is not going to end on a cliffhanger of Are they all going to die? and then we never find out. It was worth the investment and I do think when people finish the season/series, they will feel like this season - again, we didn’t know going in - but it does feel like if you didn’t know that, you would think we knew going in because of what we’re doing thematically and where our characters go. So, I think people will feel very satisfied.”

As the conversation with Paradise concluded, she was left with one last question: For Star Trek: Discovery fans, people who have followed these five seasons - as they soon finish these final episodes, what message do you as a co-showrunner want to say these people, after investing their time in the series over the past seven years and falling in love with these characters?

“I just would want to say thank you. There is no Discovery without the fans and they are always so loving and supportive and passionate, even when they don’t like what we’re doing, they’re passionate. As writers and creators and actors and the directors, we love that! We love that passion and their passion means so much to us.”

Paradise added: “It was a gift. Hopefully, we’ll all get to do it again someday.”

Crowdfunded ‘Space Command: Redemption’ Released, Features Star Trek’s Doug Jones, Robert Picardo & More

A dozen years after its first crowdfunding campaign , the first installment of Marc Scott Zicree’s Space Command has been released, with several Star Trek actors in the cast. “Space Command: Redemption” is out now on Tubi, VOD, and physical media, with more installments from the series in the works.

Space Command is a sci-fi series inspired by Star Trek. The ensemble cast for “Space Command: Redemption” features Star Trek: Discovery’s Doug Jones in a leading role. Other franchise stars include Robert Picardo ( Voyager ), Armin Shimerman ( Deep Space Nine ), Faran Tahir (J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek ), and the late Nichelle Nichols (TOS). The cast also includes several Babylon 5 stars including Bill Mumy,  Bruce Boxleitner, and the late Mira Furlan.

Here is the official synopsis for “Space Command: Redemption”…

Captain Kemmer rescues xeno-archeologist Vonn O’Dara high above Mars, setting into motion a revolution that changes galactic history. The thrilling new space-set film follow the bold adventures in space of the United Planet’s Space Command, a dedicated group of scientists, soldiers and adventurers exploring and taming the vast expanse of our solar system for human colonization.

Here is how Doug Jones described his role in Space Command in a 2018 interview with TrekMovie :

Dorn Neven is an android in Space Command . I loved his character so much. He is much like other characters I have played, in that he is tall and lanky, but very poised and very mannered. He is an android that served as a servant for rich people in this future setting, but he ended up getting a heart and soul of his own, getting more human characteristics and asking questions he wasn’t supposed to ask. So, they end up demoting him and putting him in the salt mines, and that is how you meet him in the beginning of  Space Command .

Space Command was written, directed, and produced by Marc Scott Zicree, who worked on shows like Sliders and Babylon 5 , as well as authoring the influential book The Twilight Zone Companion . Zicree has also been involved in Star Trek, writing the stories for the Next Generation episode “First Contact” and DS9’s “Far Beyond the Stars.” He also wrote and directed the 2007 Star Trek Phase II fan film “World Enough and Time,” starring George Takei. His concept for Space Command was to make something more like Star Trek, in reaction to the dark and dystopic sci-fi of the early 2000s.

“Our idea was an uplifting show like the original Star Trek , which came out when I was 10, blew my mind, and inspired my lifetime fascination for this whole realm. Star Trek was truly revolutionary,” says Zicree in a statement. “Like Star Trek , the stories we present in Space Command are hopeful, taking on various challenges that show we can make a future worth living and not just passively accept defeat. The whole philosophy of the film is that we can achieve all of this through empathy, compassion, and inclusivity. We want to change millions of lives for the better.”

The initial crowdfunding campaign brought in $221,000 in 2012, which helped launch the independent Space Command Studio based in Los Angeles, California. Over the past decade, Zicree has raised $4 million between crowdfunding and selling investment shares. Filming and post-production work on the Space Command series has been ongoing over the last decade with work recently completed on the 2-part pilot, which is the newly released “Space Command: Redemption” movie. Zicree has planned out a 12-part “season” for Space Command with filming for part 6 recently completed and parts 7 and 8 already begun.

This looks like a slice of classic 80s Sci-Fi cheesiness. Hope it’s enjoyable in that way.

Looks like something I would have rented from Hollywood Video in 2001… So yep, I’ll watch it!

This has been out for years. Not sure what this is about.

Yeah, I wondered this as well when I saw it posted up on YouTube as if it was a new thing. Marc Zicree, bless him, can sometimes be a bit over the top with ‘marketing’. As in, reposting, clipping, whatever. Amusing that such a repost has made its way here as a story though. I guess a correction is in order!

I’ve never heard of this but I’m curious now. I am definitely interested in watching anything that has the classic Star Trek spirit of optimism and hope.

Mira Furlan passed away a couple years ago. A damn shame, she was an underrated actress, and her personal story was equally compelling.

Nichelle Nichols has been gone almost two years now as well…

How is this different from Space Command 2020? It’s on youtube as Space Command Streaming Series (10 parts). Very poor Imdb reviews, two fake 10*s. Space Command Redemption is also on Imdb, no reviews, incomplete cast list. Some poor acting in the trailer.

I watched the original version of “Space Command” some time ago and was not too impressed. Nevertheless, I wish Zicree nothing but the best in this project, and will hopefully get around to checking it out myself eventually. I met him many years ago at the Director’s Guild in Los Angeles for a screening of the Trek pilots which also included his excellent “World Enough and Time,” and he seemed like a very nice guy.

He’s a cool dude, for sure. And Space Command (2020-2022) is packed with cool people. I’m not sure what happened. Perhaps an avalanche of issues. Or maybe it’s just not for me – which is, you know, fine.

But I didn’t so much watch that production as I endured it!

Watching it myself, I went with the second possibility. And you’re correct; that’s fine. If I were 14 and had just finished reading my first Heinlein juvenile, where the characters tended to say things like “gadzooks!,” I probably would have loved it.

A dozen years??? I had thought that the Axanar crowd were the world – class slackers! LMAO.

Guía para adentrarse en 'Star Trek': cuál es el mejor orden para ver toda la franquicia y dónde hacerlo

Hay veces en que la vida te pone por delante una tarea difícil, como luchar contra el cambio climático o visionar cronológicamente 'Star Trek', por ejemplo. Para lo primero no podemos ayudarte (aunque reciclar y usar transporte público ayuda), pero lo segundo es algo que vas a descubrir ahora mismo.

Así que quieres adentrarte en 'Star Trek' . Reconozco que, si bien es una franquicia divertidísima que te proporcionará horas de visionado, son tantos los capítulos, desperdigados en varias series que no necesariamente continúan la anterior, que lo mismo te haces un lío. Tienes ante ti más de 600 horas, básicamente 25 días seguidos sin parar. ¿Por dónde empiezo?, preguntas. Pues nosotros te proponemos dos opciones distintas: una cronológica (bastante ortodoxa) y otra salteada . Pero antes, hay algo que debes saber...

La maldición de Star Trek

Pues sí, es necesario que clave el freno y nos meta en una carretera secundaria para que aprendas una lección de historia. Tiene que ver con la serie original de 'Star Trek' y con lo que podríamos llamar karma, si es que crees en esas cosas. Porque verás, la tercera temporada de la serie original de Star Trek estuvo rodeada de mala suerte... y malas decisiones.

¿Qué a qué problemas me refiero? Gene Roddenberry, siempre a la gresca con NBC (y con todo el mundo en general), no estaba en su mejor momento ni como autor, ni como supervisor; los genios de la ciencia ficción que ayudaron a pergeñar algunos de los mejores episodios de las temporadas uno y dos no volvieron; hubo discutibles decisiones de producción y un recorte presupuestario; la cadena trasladó la serie a la franja de la muerte, la de los viernes noche, después de una petición masiva de los fans y una jugarreta de Jerry Lewis . Entre todos la mataron y ella sola se murió.

El caso es que, a partir de entonces, las series de 'Star Trek' se caracterizan por empezar a mejorar sustancialmente… a partir de la tercera temporada . Como si algo les impidiera alcanzar su potencial hasta pasar esa barrera que la original no pudo.

Esto no quiere decir que las dos primeras temporadas de cada serie que vino después sean malas; tampoco que no haya capítulos notables hasta ese punto. Pero como serie, como producto total en el que todos los engranajes funcionan y la premisa se explota de verdad, ninguna despega hasta ese punto. Y esto te conviene saberlo antes de verlas todas; ahora sí, entramos en materia...

Orden cronológico interno

¿Qué es lo que proponemos en el orden cronológico interno? Una forma de ver cada serie y película de 'Star Trek' según la fecha en la que se ambiente dentro de la propia narración. En contra de lo que pueda parecer, este tipo de orden puede parecer un poco desesperante al principio. El motivo es que 'Star Trek' ha ido sofisticándose con los años y, como veremos, alguna serie no continúa precisamente donde lo dejó la anterior.

Además, la forma de narrar historias ha evolucionado y el planteamiento de episodio en los años 60 no tiene nada que ver con lo que se consideraba en los 80, ya ni te cuento entre los 90 y los 00. Sin embargo, es bastante satisfactorio comprobar cómo algunas piezas encajan y, para qué negarlo, el nivel general es notable. ¿Listos para comenzar el viaje?

'Star Trek: Enterprise' - La historia de los pioneros

Si quieres empezar a ver 'Star Trek' según el orden interno, tienes que empezar por una serie bastante reciente , con 'Star Trek: Enterprise' (2001-2005), y prepararte para un viaje movido. La serie, creada por Rick Berman y Brannon Braga, está ambientada en el siglo XXII. Cuenta las aventuras del capitán Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) y la tripulación del primer Enterprise capaz de alcanzar velocidad de curvatura: por tanto, de ir donde ningún otro hombre ha ido jamás, sólo que ojalá lo hubiera hecho con algo más que tumbos y una tripulación más diversa.

Gracias a la incorporación de Manny Coto (cuya serie ‘Odyssey 5’ merece un redescubrimiento), la cuarta temporada tuvo como objetivo la creación de la Federación Unida de Planetas, después de lidiar con una Guerra Fría Temporal que empezó como buena idea y terminó estrangulando hasta a los propios creadores, y la aparición de los Xindi, un conjunto de razas que salvaron a la serie de la cancelación. Es esa apuesta por la serialidad a lo largo de temporadas la que presenta, a la vez, el punto fuerte y el débil de la serie : por un lado, los personajes y sobre todo Archer ganan aristas con cada episodio; por el otro, obliga a un visionado completo.

Y a comulgar con ruedas de molino como ‘Carga valiosa’ en la segunda temporada (cuyo guionista, David Goodman, dijo que esa mierda que se emitió no es la mierda que escribió), alguna escena gratuita como de 'Los Serrano' o el desastre de final de serie llamado ‘Estos son los viajes…’, que deberías ver después de ‘La nueva generación’ o nunca, ahí ya lo que prefieras.

'Star Trek: Discovery' - La nueva en el barrio

Su planteamiento es poco ortodoxo: está ambientada diez años antes de las aventuras del Capitán Kirk, aunque aparecen múltiples elementos que sonarán a los más fans , como el mismísimo padre de Spock, Sarek. Desde los primeros episodios queda claro que la forma de narrar de esta serie tiene más en mente el modelo actual, con un misterio que solucionar en cada temporada y que se va desplegando poco a poco. Por cierto, quizás cronológicamente, antes de esta serie haya que introducir el piloto de la 'Star Trek' original, 'The Cage'.

De esta serie nos quedamos solo con las dos primeras temporadas, ya que la temporada 3 nos manda a un futuro muy distante, el del siglo 32, del que hablaremos cuando llegue el momento. De momento, esta estupenda producción que ha revitalizado la franquicia pertenece a la misma era que la 'Star Trek' original, del mismo modo que lo hace la recién llegada 'Strange New Worlds', y que se sitúa en el punto de la cronología en el que el capitán Pike, Número Uno y Spock están en la Enterprise antes de la llegada de Kirk.

'Star Trek: La serie original', 'Star Trek: La serie animada' y las películas - Los de siempre

Agárrate los machos porque te toca 'Star Trek’, la serie original, un salto quizá demasiado duro en tanto que ni la puesta en escena, ni el desarrollo dramático se parecen a 'Enterprise' y menos aún a 'Discovery' , que esto es una serie de los sesenta.

Además, Gene Roddenberry, de cara a la sindicación y por tanto a la reposición no necesariamente ordenada, exigió un botón de reinicio al final de cada episodio (metafóricamente hablando), algo que puede poner nervioso al espectador actual, acostumbrado a la narrativa a largo plazo, cuando no morosa.

Pero si puedes pasar por alto eso y aprecias el corazón de sus historias, verás una serie con unos capítulos y conceptos increíbles, una tripulación a la que es imposible no coger cariño y en especial a su núcleo, formado por Kirk, Spock, McCoy y Scotty.

Antes de saltar a las películas, que conforman una cuarta temporada, podrías hacer otro ejercicio de arqueología catódica y sumergirte en la serie animada de Filmation, de sólo dos temporadas , que llegó a expandir algunos de los capítulos de la serie original y por lo tanto se aventura, de manera tímida, en cierta continuidad narrativa.

En cuanto a las películas, hay de todo, como en la botica del Dr. “Huesos” McCoy, pero la media se sitúa en el notable y algunas podrían pasar por excelentes episodios . Son, por orden: una entrada soporífera y aún así apreciable, un clásico, dos notables filmes seguidos, un chasco salvable, otra maravilla y, bueno, una complicada de situar porque está protagonizada también por los otros.

Caminos paralelos: la línea del reboot o "Jotajotaverso"

Digo Jotajotaverso en vez de Jjverso por escribir algo pronunciable, pero espero que ya entiendas a qué me refiero: al reinicio que la franquicia tuvo en 2009 a manos de J. J. Abrams, trilero audiovisual, macguffinista de manual y buen tío en general.

Con tres películas en su haber, la primera narra un evento que crea una realidad paralela a la de la serie original, de modo que los fans más hardcore no pudieran rabiar al reescribir la serie original.

Su situación en toda esta cronología es, por tanto, dudosa : por un lado, está la rejuvenecida tripulación original; por el otro, la inclusión de un viejo Spock, para quien su mejor amigo Kirk está muerto, me llevaría a situarla entre la sexta entrega fílmica, ‘Star Trek La próxima generación’, y la serie TNG para respetar así la línea de tiempo del vulcaniano.

'Star Trek: La nueva generación' - Los otros tipos

'Star Trek: La nueva generación’ (TNG en adelante) podría ser la serie más apreciada por el espectador medio, al tener una estética más cercana a la de nuestra época y una sensibilidad respecto a la ciencia ficción más cercana a las mejores épocas del género . También es una serie en lucha constante consigo misma, no sólo como vivo ejemplo de la deriva del género de la ciencia ficción. Y es que aún sufre de ese botón de reinicio vestigial, si bien se permite cierta progresión y rebeldes ejercicios de continuidad.

Al igual que la serie original, las películas de la TNG forman una nueva temporada. La serie terminó en 1994 y en ese mismo año se estrenó su primer filme, 'Star Trek: La nueva generación’, la sexta película de todas las de Star Trek y en la que comparten protagonismo con los miembros de la serie original. Y es que es necesario haber visto TNG para entender, por ejemplo, por qué en 'Primer Contacto’ Picard odia tanto a los Borg. Una pista: tiene que ver con el apabullante final de la tercera temporada.

Al contrario que con Kirk, todas las películas de Picard, salvo ‘Primer contacto’, son de peor calidad que la serie. Y puedes despedirte de casi toda la tripulación con 'Némesis’, su inmerecido broche.

'Star Trek: Espacio Profundo Nueve' - La estacionaria

Restan dos series por descubrir, cada una con siete temporadas a sus espaldas: 'Star Trek: Espacio Profundo Nueve’ (DS9 cuando me canse de escribir el nombre) y 'Star Trek: Voyager’. Aparte del número de temporadas y de la época en la que discurren, después de TNG, no podrían ser más distintas.

La primera, protagonizada por el Capitán Benjamin Sisko, tiene lugar en una estación espacial y por tanto tiene más de Western, de relato fronterizo: apuesta por la serialidad y es, de todas, la más seria al abordar conflictos externos e internos con la misma gravedad.

Eso no quita con que tenga una primera temporada con alguno de los puntos más bajos de la franquicia, como este fragmento del capítulo ‘Sigue hasta casa’ de aquí arriba, que el propio Ronald D. Moore (creador de ‘Battlestar: Galactica’ y eminente trekkie ) vio por la televisión y se pensó si se habían vuelto locos.

Entre las mejoras, pasada la temible barrera de la segunda temporada, está la reincorporación de un notable personaje. ¿Recuerdas, poco más atrás, mi comentario de que 'Star Trek: Némesis’ supone la despedida de casi toda la tripulación de Picard? Eso es porque Worf, el carismático Klingon, llega al mando de Sisko a partir de la cuarta temporada.

Aunque nunca recomendaría el visionado suelto de la serie, sí que puedes guiarte por un truco para saber de un vistazo si el capítulo tiene más probabilidades de ser bueno: si Sisko tiene afeitada la cabeza, casi seguro que molará. El actor Avery Brooks lo llevaba pidiendo desde el principio, pero sólo cuando le dejaron se le nota más confiado… al igual que la serie.

'Star Trek: Voyager' - La que fue a por tabaco

En cuanto a 'Star Trek: Voyager’ te sorprenderá que esté protagonizada por la tripulación más diversa que se ha visto en un Enterprise, en el que las mujeres están al mando de la nave y de las tramas.

Narra las aventuras de la nave Voyager y su intento de volver a casa tras perderse en el cuadrante Delta, a 70.000 años luz de distancia. Su punto flaco es que, pese a su simulacro de serialidad, la continuidad vuelve a ser algo no muy trascendente.

A cambio, nos dejan una capitana carismática aunque algo veleta y un personaje memorable en forma de Siete de Nueve, una antigua Borg que es mucho más que una cara bonita.

Es, no obstante, una serie con sus contras y un alarmante número de episodios que se encuentran entre lo peor del universo trekkie , como ‘Momento crítico’, en el que la capitana Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) es secuestrada por el piloto Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), que está digievolucionando a lagarto. Sólo apto para amantes de las historias románticas con salamandras.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' - Una parodia que se las sabe todas

Seamos honestos: el fan de la ciencia ficción en general y el trekkie en particular no es especialmente devoto de que se tomen a chufa sus mitos intocables. Por eso esta magnífica serie de animación situada inmediatamente después de lo visto en 'Némesis' hace arrugar el morro a los aficionados a la franquicia más inseguros de lo suyo.

Y eso pese a que la serie tiene un punto de partida sublime: centrarnos no en lo que sucede en el glamouroso puente de mando, sino en las cubiertas bajas , donde están los becarios, la carne de cañón y la gente con opiniones incómodas. ' Lower Decks ' no solo es una parodia de 'Star Trek' que encaja a la perfección con el lore de la serie, sino que también pone en solfa sus conceptos más heredados del space opera , con el añadido de que al ser una serie oficial de la franquicia no tiene que andarse con subterfugios y puede citar la cronología de la saga sin ningún problema.

'Star Trek: Picard' - El mito se retira

Una serie que sigue dividiendo a los fans debido a su tono abiertamente pesimista y que se aparta de describir una sociedad futura en la que todo va como la seda, para centrarse en un retirado Picard hastiado de las aventuras espaciales. Una rebelión de androides lleva a la prohibición de la vida sintética, lo que da una idea del tono en el que se mueve la serie.

Para una franquicia tan creyente en un futuro brillante para la especie humana (y lo que se encuentre por ahí), 'Picard' se siente casi como una traición a ese tono, y su condición de "epílogo" a todo lo visto en las demás series refuerza su condición pesimista . Tanto esta como 'Discovery' hace que los fans se pregunten: ¿necesita este tipo de "modernización" la saga, o es precisamente ese optimismo lo que la hace atemporal? Sin duda, una pieza de debate.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' - Regreso a los orígenes

Un homenaje a la serie clásica de los años sesenta en toda regla. No solo es una precuela que se adelanta a la época de los míticos viajes en la Enterprise de Kirk y compañía, sino que hereda el estilo episódico, de "Planeta de la semana" original. De aquella serie recupera a Pike, Spock y Número Uno. Resultado: una producción absolutamente afín al espíritu clásico no solo en la forma, sino también en su maravilloso fondo e incluso en cierta desenfadada concepción de la ciencia ficción, que sienta como un guante a la franquicia.

Básicamente podemos dividir esta lista en siglos :

El siglo XXIII es el de la serie original, su precuela 'Enterprise' y la nueva 'Strange New Worlds', también una precuela.

El siglo XXIV arranca con La nueva generación y es una especie de universo compartido que comprende tres series ('LNG', 'Deep Space Nine' y 'Voyager') y las películas 'VII' a la 'X', combinadas en una misma línea de tiempo. También de la misma época (más o menos) son las últimas incorporaciones animadas a la franquicia: 'Lower Decks' y 'Prodigy'. Finalmente, en la primera película de Abrams, la destrucción de Romulus y el viaje de Spock a una época previa a la serie original ocurre después de la película 'Nemesis'.

El siglo XXV es el que se muestra en 'Picard', cronológicamente posterior al desfase total de 'Némesis' y después de que la destrucción de Romulus se atisbara en la 'Star Trek' de Abrams. En esta nueva etapa Picard está retirado en Francia, una rebelión de androides lleva a la prohibición de la vida sintética y un Cubo Borg es examinado en busca de tecnología.

Finalmente, mucho más allá, está el siglo XXXII , que es a donde nos lleva el final de la segunda temporada de 'Discovery', y se desarrolla en la tercera: una misión 900 años al futuro para salvar el mundo. Allí la mayoría del dilithium de la galaxia ha sido destruido y los motores de curvatura ya no existen, la Federación casi se ha desintegrado y la Tierra ya no forma parte de ella.

Desorden organizado: una propuesta de visionado

Pero hay otra forma de iniciarse en el universo 'Star Trek' y es el modo en que lo descubrí yo: empezando por las películas. Puede que prefieras iniciarte en el jotajotaverso y luego saltar a las de la serie original, o antepongas las diez películas con el Kirk de William Shatner y las de 'TNG' antes de ponerte con el jotajoverso, pero sea como sea, son una atractiva puerta de entrada.

Las películas, aunque tomen el legado de 'Star Trek' para continuar o ampliar lo que no se vio en la tele, necesitan una concreción narrativa que te permite entrar de un salto en su universo y que te familiarizarán con la franquicia.

Es indudable que te perderás ciertos detalles, pero también que, dado que las dos primeras temporadas de toda serie trekkie son más áridas comparado con las que vienen después, el cariño adquirido por las pelis lo hará más llevadero.

A partir de ahí, puedes saltar a las series, empezando por ‘Enterprise’, seguir con ‘Espacio profundo nueve’ (si ves las películas primero, la aparición de Worf o los Borg no te cogerá por sorpresa) y ‘Voyager’. Cuando cualquiera de esas tres series te decepcione, puedes ver los episodios de la serie original y TNG como caramelos sueltos a intercalar. No es un visionado ortodoxo y alguno ya me saltará a la yugular, pero sí más animado.

Pero aún hay más: como todo producto cultural que se ha desarrollado a lo largo de décadas, 'Star Trek' no ha podido resistirse a introducir guiños a sí misma. Con esto quiero decir que, después de las películas, siempre puedes ver las series según el orden de emisión.

Os recuerdo además que en Xataka ya me encargué de ordenar de peor a mejor las series y pelis, con lo que sabréis mejor a qué ateneros.

Bajo las naves, los alienígenas y la parafernalia científica se esconde un producto que ha explorado como pocos la condición humana y ha preferido la reflexión sobre la violencia descerebrada para atajar los problemas. En estos tiempos, no se puede pedir más, ni exigir menos.

5 Things Only Adults Notice In Star Trek: The Original Series

For folks who grew up watching "Star Trek: The Original Series" either in syndication or during its original run, dropping phrases like "I'm a doctor, not an engineer" and "Live long and prosper" comes as naturally as the old Vulcan salute. Even though the special effects were pretty dodgy by today's standards and the universe seemed inexplicably overrun with omniscient beings in those days, the original series still slapped. 

And for those now-grown Trekkies among us with the good sense to watch the Kirk crew as adults, the series still holds up with some of the best episodes in the "Star Trek" franchise — even if there are a few things we didn't catch the first time around. From scenes so thirsty they give "Star Trek: Enterprise" a run for its money to progressive politics on full display, here are five things that stand out to adults when they're rewatching "Star Trek: The Original Series."

Enterprise is the thirstiest ship in the galaxy

"Star Trek: Prodigy" notwithstanding, most "Star Trek" series have their hornier moments. There's a reason "Star Trek: Enterprise" has earned the sobriquet "Sexy Trek" — and that reason begins and ends with the decontamination chamber. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" certainly had its share of freaktastic frolics, from intergalactic playboy Riker's equal opportunity joysticking to the space orgy episode Patrick Stewart would call a "sex farce." But at least "The Original Series" remains pure in our childhood memories, right?

Despite our tendency to Disneyify TV time from the 1960s, a grown-up's revisiting of "The Original Series" reveals it's easily the thirstiest "Star Trek" entry — thirsty enough to make even a Denobulan blush. Reddit user u/thekruton gave the ultimate breakdown of the original series' horny quotient in a lengthy r/startrek post detailing all of the show's thirstiest moments. Numerous plots involving sex robots, sexy hypnosis, horny crewmen, and women obsessed with jumping Kirk's (William Shatner) bones make up the list.

Rarely does an episode pass without Kirk stepping full-tilt into a scantily-clad alien woman's personal space bubble while gently rubbing her upper arms as a prelude to a G-rated face-mushing. But it's dialogue like "That ancient earth custom called spanking, what is it?" or the desperate "I must touch him!" that makes this series almost too caliente.

Captain Kirk shows a lot of moob

While it could technically fall under Thirst Trek, the phenomenon of Kirk's incessant shirt-ripping and all-around free-the-nipple energy is so confounding it truly warrants its own school of literary analysis. According to "These are the Voyages," a "Star Trek" book series that references production notes, firsthand accounts, and various ephemera chronicling the series, the moderately hairy Shatner had consented to a Ken doll-esque shave for the show. In Roddenberry's mind, 23rd century men would be hairless, after all. And judging by the final product, the notoriously cheesecake-loving showrunner would take every opportunity to show off Kirk's waxy, soft natural physique. A lover and a fighter, Captain Kirk is fairly prone to getting into fisticuffs with everyone from Charlie X to his own crewmen. And whenever those fists come out, it's only a matter of time before his shirt gets ripped, revealing an unnecessarily oily chest.

YouTuber EC Henry compiled a list to find out exactly how many times Kirk gets his shirt off. Over the course of the series, Kirk either removes or rips his shirt in 17 separate episodes, which Henry notes amounts to more than 20 percent of "The Original Series" episodes. And it's not just little rips — often, Kirk's top ends up quite literally hanging off of his body. With a shirt loss rate that high, it's a good thing they can just replicate him new ones as needed.

Star Trek has always been pretty woke

No fandom is perfect, and the "Star Trek" community certainly has its share of gatekeeping fanboys who love to comment about just how "woke" the franchise has become. Spend enough time in any "Star Trek" Facebook group and you'll be sure to find a salty p'takh outlining their arguments against Woke Trek — namely, that there aren't enough white dudes and straight folks among the main cast in "Star Trek: Discovery."

But when rewatching "The Original Series," it's hard not to notice just how hard the series was working to telegraph its progressiveness — particularly in light of the 1960s zeitgeist. While miniskirts have come to be associated with objectification to many in today's world, when "Star Trek" first aired they served as a symbol of female empowerment and rejection of traditional values. Cultural inclusivity has always been baked into the storytelling, from the multicultural (for its time) casting and Uhura's role as one of the ship's most essential officers. While these elements might go unnoticed to many viewers today, it's difficult to overstate just how trailblazing they were at the time — so much so that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed Uhura's role would change the world.

And then there are the narratives that challenge the inherent nihilism of hatred and war based on chauvinism. Nowhere is this theme better exemplified than in "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," which sees nearly identical aliens with opposite skin color patterns watch as both their races are functionally driven to extinction over prejudice and enslavement.

Star Trek was also pretty darned sexist

Despite the show's efforts to portray a semi-utopian future where infinite diversity creates truth and beauty in the universe, even "Star Trek" had its oversights. And like so many sexist "Star Trek" moments to follow, "The Original Series" did a pretty poor job with its treatment of women. As with Kirk's constant shirt-removal, rarely does the Roddenberry-driven thirst engine pass up an opportunity to show off as much lady skin as possible — a demand that led a young Teri Garr to storm off set over an insanely tiny skirt while filming "Assignment: Earth."

But the show's maltreatment of women extends far beyond slinky costumes into the storytelling. Fans have long struggled to find a passable retrocanonization for Captain Pike's (Jeffrey Hunter) offhand comment that he can't get used to having a woman on the bridge in "The Cage." "Star Trek" also features many narratives portraying women as damsels in distress and temptresses with hidden agendas. Take, for example, the Shakespeare-reciting Orion woman Marta in "Whom Gods Destroy." A former psychiatric institution patient, the delusional Marta (Yvonne Craig) follows her shapeshifter zaddy Garth (Steve Ihnat) to freedom only to relentlessly seduce and nearly stab Kirk aboard the Enterprise before getting unceremoniously blown up while absolutely no one tries to stop it. Later, the would-be genocidal Garth is given a miracle cure and seems to bounce back as if nothing ever happened.

The Star Trek costumes were incredible

Despite the show's complicated portrayal of everything from gender issues to Captain Kirk's nips, one thing remains consistent throughout "Star Trek: The Original Series" — the quality of the drip. When they're not sporting Starfleet uniforms, future folk can be seen dressing for success. And on board the Enterprise, that means more lamé, sequins, and glitter than a Gaga video. There are plenty of fur moments, like the fur-detailed cloak worn by Garth of Izar in "Whom Gods Destroy" and the plush sleeves of Anton Karidian's robe in "The Conscience of a King," both of which are clearly Tribble fur in the correct headcanon. And then there's Karidian's daughter Lenore, whose mink mini dress may or may not secretly be targ fur.

For anyone in search of culturally offensive Burning Man or Coachella fashion inspo, "TOS" is a veritable compendium of unambiguously appropriated festival 'fits. Nowhere is this more obvious than in "The Paradise Syndrome," which sees Kirk decked out in a long, multicolored feather cape representing the finest in futuristic avian fashion.

Of course, no "Original Series" episode would be complete without a little eye glam from the emo boy eyeshadow Bones (DeForest Kelley) and Sulu (George Takei) rock on the daily. Factor in the show's countless complicated, sculptured hairstyles and loads of whimsical space accessories, and it's a recipe for runway domination.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Año en que transcurre la acción: 2259.

Concebida como un 'spin-off' de Star Trek: Discovery y con un nuevo elenco en la piel de míticos personajes, la serie más nueva de la franquicia ha sido descrita como un soplo de aire fresco para la saga y de lo mejorcito de las producciones recientes dentro de la saga. En ella se sigue las aventuras de Christopher Pike, Número Uno y el oficial Spock mientras exploran nuevos mundos alrededor de la galaxia una década antes de que el capitán Kirk abordase la U.S.S. Enterprise.

Star Trek: La Serie Original

Años en que transcurre la acción: 2265-2269.

Emitida entre 1966 y 1969, Star Trek es la serie que lo comenzó todo: Ambientada en el siglo XXIII, la serie nos presentaba las aventuras de la nave estelar USS Enterprise y su tripulación, liderada por el Capitán Kirk ( William Shatner ), Sr. Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ) y la oficial de comunicaciones Nyota Uhura ( Nichelle Nichols ), en su misión de explorar mundos desconocidos y nuevas civilizaciones.

Star Trek: La Serie Animada

Años en que transcurre la acción: 2269-2270.

También creada por Gene Roddenberry, como la original, la serie animada funcionaba como secuela directa de la primera Star Trek y se emitiró durante dos temporadas entre 1973 y 1974.

Star Trek: La película

Año en que transcurre la acción: 2273

Estrenada en el año 1980 como la primera película de la franquicia, el largometraje está dirigido por Robert Wise y de nuevo protagonizada por el trío protagonista principal: Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner y DeForest Kelley. El detonante de la película es el ataque de un alienígena misterioso a tres poderosas naves Klingon que quedan destruídas y que pone al Capitán James T. Kirk al frente de una nueva misión a bordo de su Enterprise.

Star Trek II: La ira de Khan

Año en que transcurre la acción: 2285

Dirigida por Nicholas Meyer, en esta segunda película de 1982 el almirante Kirk y su Enterprise se dedican a estrenar a futuros pilotos al tiempo que la nave USS Reliant trata de encontrar un planeta en el que llevar a cabo una prueba para la investigación Génesis. Un proyecto tan capaz de crear vida como de destruirla.

Star Trek III: en busca de Spock

El mismísimo Leonard Nimoy en persona se encargó de dirigir la tercera película de la saga. Un largo estrenado en el 84 y ambientado tras los trágicos acontecimientos de la anterior película y con la misión más triste de la Enterprise: llevar el cuerpo de uno de los suyos hasta el planeta Génesis.

Star Trek IV: Misión: Salvar la Tierra

Años en que transcurre la acción: 2286 y 1986.

La proximidades de una enorme sonda a la órbita terrestre ha ocasionado la desactivación de la red energética mundial y ha provocado una serie de sucesos catastróficos. Star Trek: Discovery teased an exciting new replacement for the spore drive, but with only three episodes left to go, this new technology may never be explained. Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" revealed that Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) was mourning the closure of his spore drive program, abandoned in favor of an alternative warp drive replacement. The USS Voyager-J replaced Discovery's spore drive with the pathway drive, which it had been testing since Discovery 's season 4 premiere. This created the possibility of seeing the pathway drive in action later in Discovery season 5.

However, with seven episodes down, the USS Voyager-J is yet to make an appearance in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 . In Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah", written by M. Raven Metzner and directed by Jon Dudkowski, a fleet of four Starfleet ships protected Federation Headquarters from the Breen Imperium. The Voyager-J was not among these ships, presumably because the Federation wanted to protect the pathway drive from falling into the hands of the Breen Imperium. As Discovery only has three episodes left before it ends for good, time is running out for the show to reveal Starfleet's spore drive replacement.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive Replacement May Not Be Explained By The Series’ End

As Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt builds to its climax, it doesn't feel like there will be much room to introduce another starship into the mix. The focus in Discovery 's final three episodes should be on securing the Progenitors' treasure, defeating the Breen, and wrapping up the overall stories of the show's lead characters. A diversion to visit the USS Voyager-J to explain how a pathway drive works would be an unnecessary distraction that would kill the pace of Discovery season 5 .

It was revealed earlier in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 that Lt. Commander Nilsson (Sara Mitich) transferred from the USS Discovery to the USS Voyager-J.

What's more likely is that the USS Voyager-J and the pathway drive were potential set-up for the abandoned Star Trek: Discovery season 6. As Discovery season 5 wasn't expected to be the show's finale, it's possible that the writers' room was planning to ditch Discovery's spore drive altogether in season 6. When Discovery season was canceled, so too were any tentative plans for the story of season 6, and the potential to explore how a pathway drive works. This means that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now the most likely show to explore Starfleet's latest innovation in starship propulsion .

Why Starfleet Replaced Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive

Ultimately, Starfleet replaced the spore drive because it was an incredibly complex piece of technology that required several moving parts . The horrific fate of the USS Glenn in Star Trek: Discovery season 1 revealed that spore drives need a navigator who could accurately steer the ship through the complex mycelial network. Without a skilled navigator, a ship with a spore drive could spin out with catastrophic consequences for its crew. Stamets was trying to fix this navigation issue between Discovery seasons 4 and 5, but was unable to crack it before Starfleet shuttered the project.

The dilithium shortage caused by The Burn led Starfleet to explore alternatives to warp travel in the 32nd century to reduce their reliance on the mineral.

Stamets' Tardigrade DNA enables him to pilot the USS Discovery through the mycelial network, but there's a lack of other viable navigators. The only other candidate was Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) whose empathic gifts as a Kwejian enabled him to interface with the mycelial network. However, due to the destruction of his home planet in season 4, he's one of the last of his kind, vastly reducing Starfleet's available candidates for spore drive navigators. With so few navigators, Starfleet opted to go with the pathway drive, which it's hoped will appear in a future Star Trek show following the end of Star Trek: Discovery .

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Court is the final frontier for this lost 'Star Trek' model

I n April, Heritage Auctions heralded the discovery of the original model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the iconic starship that whooshed through the stars in the opening credits of the 1960s TV series “Star Trek” but had mysteriously disappeared around 45 years ago.

The auction house, known for its dazzling sales of movie and television props and memorabilia, announced that it was returning the 33-inch model to Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry Jr., son of series creator Gene Roddenberry. The model was kept at Heritage’s Beverly Hills office for “safekeeping,” the house proclaimed in a statement, shortly after an individual discovered it and brought it to Heritage for authentication.

“After a long journey, she's home,” Roddenberry’s son posted on X , (formerly Twitter).

But the journey has been far from smooth. The starship model and its celebrated return is now the subject of a lawsuit alleging fraud, negligence and deceptive trade practice, highlighting the enduring value of memorabilia from the iconic sci-fi TV series.

The case was brought by Dustin Riach and Jason Rivas, longtime friends and self-described storage unit entrepreneurs who discovered the model among a stash of items they bought “sight unseen” from a lien sale at a storage locker in Van Nuys last October.

“It’s an unfortunate misunderstanding. We have a seller on one side and a buyer on the other side and Heritage is in the middle, and we are aligning the parties on both sides to get the transaction complete,” said Armen Vartian, an attorney representing the Dallas-based auction house, adding that the allegations against his client were “unfounded.”

The pair claimed that once the model was authenticated and given a value of $800,000, they agreed to consign it to an auction sale with Heritage planned for July 2024, according to the lawsuit. However, following their agreement, they allege the auction house falsely questioned their title to the model and then convinced them, instead of taking it to auction, to sell it for a low-ball $500,000 to Roddenberry Entertainment Inc. According to the suit, Eugene Roddenberry, the company's CEO, had shown great interest in the model and could potentially provide a pipeline of memorabilia to the auction house in the future.

“They think we have a disagreement with Roddenberry,” said Dale Washington, Riach and Rivas’ attorney. “We don’t. We think they violated property law in the discharge of their fiduciary duties.”

The two men allege they have yet to receive the $500,000 payment.

A surprise discovery in a Van Nuys storage unit

For years, Riach and Rivas have made a living buying repossessed storage lockers and selling the contents online, at auction and at flea markets. In fact, Riach has appeared on the reality TV series “Storage Wars.”

“It’s a roll of dice in the dark,” Riach said of his profession bidding on storage lockers. “Sometimes you are buying a picture of a unit. When a unit goes to lien, what you see is what you get and the rest is a surprise. At a live auction you can shine a flashlight, smell and look inside to get a gauge. But online is a gamble, it’s only as good as the photo."

Last fall, Riach said he saw a picture of a large locker in an online sale. It was 10 feet by 30 feet, and “I saw boxes hiding in the back, it was dirty, dusty, there were cobwebs and what looked like a bunch of broken furniture,” he said.

Something about it, he said, “looked interesting,” and he called Rivas and told him they should bid on it. Riach declined to say how much they paid.

There were tins of old photographs and negatives of nitrate film reels from the 1800s and 1900s. When Rivas unwrapped a trash bag that was sitting on top of furniture, he pulled out a model of a spaceship. The business card of its maker, Richard C. Datin, was affixed to the bottom of the base.

A Google search turned up that Datin had made “Star Trek” models, although the two men didn’t make the connection to the TV series.

“We buy lots of units and see models all of the time,” Riach said. He thought they would find a buyer and decided to list it on eBay with a starting price of $1,000.

At once, they were deluged with inquiries. Among Trekkies, the long-lost first starship model had attained a mythical status.

The original “Star Trek'' debuted in 1966 and aired for three seasons. Although its original run was brief, the show has generated numerous films and television spinoffs and is one of the most lucrative entertainment franchises, with an enormous fan base.

In 2022, at a Heritage auction of 75 props and items, a Starfleet Communicator from the 1990s series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” sold for $27,500 while a pair of Spock’s prosthetic Vulcan ear tips from the original series went for $11,875, more than twice the amount they brought when they were sold in 2017 for $5,100.

The starship’s design was crucial to the series' success. "If you didn’t believe you were in a vehicle traveling through space, a vehicle that made sense, whose layout and design made sense, then you wouldn’t believe in the series,” Gene Roddenberry said in the 1968 book “The Making of Star Trek,” according to the auction house.

For years, the show’s creator had kept the 33-inch model on his desk. It became the prototype for the 11-foot model used in subsequent episodes. That version was later donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. But that first model disappeared around 1978 when the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” borrowed it.

A missing starship model

In 1979, Roddenberry wrote to then Paramount executive Jeffrey Katzenberg stating that he had “loaned” the model to the studio more than a year earlier.

"My problem is simply that of getting my model back," Roddenberry wrote, according to a copy provided by Washington. "It is a fairly expensive piece of model making but its real value to me is what it represents." He added that no one he had spoken with "had the slightest hint as to who got it or what happened to it."

Roddenberry died in 1991 .

After the massive interest sparked by the eBay listing, Riach and Rivas pulled the sale and began researching the model more intently. They discovered the connection between Datin and the TV series but also learned that the original model was the same size as the one they had found and it had gone missing. “I said wow, do we have something here?” said Riach, and then reached out to Heritage.

Riach admitted that “Star Trek” wasn’t really on his radar. He was a die-hard “Star Wars” fan, having collected vintage memorabilia from the space films since he was 8 years old.

But given the treasure he unearthed, he now says, “I love ‘Star Trek.’

“There are people buying storage units for 20 years and you will never find anything this great,” he said. “It’s like buying a lottery ticket. It was a very great find.”

Things took an unexpected twist, Riach said. In March, he and Rivas signed an agreement to sell the model for $500,000 after it was pulled from the planned auction and they were told Roddenberry Entertainment had a "strong claim" to the model's title and “would tie them up with its ‘powerful legal team.’” But then they were given a new transfer agreement to sign with a new set of terms. Riach declined and, instead, he and Rivas called Washington.

Heritage “moved the goalposts,” said their attorney. Under the new agreement, Riach and Rivas would be paid a "finder's fee," which Washington called a "reward," converting it from a transactional payment to a potentially voluntary payment.

They claimed that by April, when Heritage announced the model had resurfaced, the pair came to believe the house failed to disclose the item's value was much greater than they had been told.

Joe Maddalena, Heritage’s executive vice president, made public statements calling it “priceless.” “It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he told the AP . “It is truly a cultural icon.”

They also had not been paid.

On April 28, 10 days after Heritage announced it had returned the model to Roddenberry, Riach and Rivas' lawyer sent a letter to the auction house’s attorney outlining their claims and asking for the payment promised; they also proposed mediation.

Vartian, the lawyer representing Heritage, said that Riach and Rivas became “impatient" about getting the transaction done, and disputes the house had a fiduciary duty to them.

“This is an arm's-length business relationship," Vartian said. "They bring something to the auction house and are trying to get the most possible amount as quickly as possible, that is [Heritage’s] position and what they did.”

Still, Vartian is confident that they will soon conclude the transaction, saying, “Various things including scheduling have taken longer than it would.”

For his part, Riach says this experience is much like that of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise — “a strange new world.”

“I’ve never experienced anything like this. I’ve sold fine art at auction and other places, I got my check and went on. I’ve never had this roller coaster.

“Storage is a hard game. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose," he added. "We’ve bought a $10,000 unit and everything was complete garbage. But if you play long enough, you can get lucky.”

La razón es que a la mítica cinta original le siguieron exclusivamente películas de serie B que cuesta mucho ver a día de hoy y un remake de Tim Burton absolutamente desastroso. Hasta hace poco, el mundo que comenzó Charlton Heston en 1968 no tenía una verdadera trilogía de referencia, un corpus verdaderamente recomendable.

Todo eso cambio gracias a Andy Serkis en 2014 y a las modernas precuelas de César. Como hemos visto en nuestro Orden cronológico de la saga de El planeta de los simios , esta ya era una historia que se contó en las películas antiguas, pero el CGI y la captura de movimiento lo llevaron por primera vez a buen puerto. Before the end of the episode, Galway will have died of old age.

Washburn was interviewed by StarTrek.com back in 2013 , and she remembered shooting "The Deadly Years" quite well. Firstly, she remembered the extensive makeup process she had to undergo to make her look like a woman in her 80s when she was, at the time, only 24. In classic fashion, the makeup artists had to wrap Washburn's face in plaster and let it dry for an hour while she breathed through a straw. They would then use the plaster mold to extrapolate an old-age mask made of rubber. It was the 1960s, so the rubber mask was glued to Washburn's face with spirit gum. The whole process took four and a half hours.

Shatner had to go through a similar process, although he was having a ball. Even while Washburn was acting out Lieutenant Galway's death scene, Shatner was making old man jokes and horsing around on set. Despite the drama of the scene, Washburn recalls a very lighthearted day of filming.

Dying is easy, comedy is hard

Washburn recalled well the drama of Lieutenant Galway and even was a little bummed out that her character had to die:

"I was the first to die and I was the youngest. As you watch the episode you progressively see the others getting older. Then, of course, Chekov found the cure, but too late for me. I was hoping I could have gotten cured, but that didn't happen. But it was a very special role and it's still one of my favorite roles that I've done."

She also recalled the scene wherein she had to die of old age, a tall order for an actor in her 20s. It was very dramatic and tragic, with the young character pondering her wasted potential. She got to look directly at her reflection, seeing how she was supposed to look in 70 or 80 more years and played the scene with a combination of panic and weary acceptance. While Washburn was digging deep, however, William Shatner was giggling :

"William Shatner was a very funny guy and he was just cracking up the whole time because they had him with his grey hair, starting to age. So he was doing all this funny shtick on the stage. It was a really lighthearted, fun set to be on and then we'd try to get right into the moment when we had to shoot it. People remember the scene, so I guess we did a good job of it."

It seems that lightheartedness on set was vital for Washburn to perform the scene. She was feeling the weight of her character's drama and everyone's giggles and jokes allowed her to loosen up.

The Star Trek blooper reel

Any Trekkie worth their salt has likely seen the infamous "Star Trek" blooper reels  that were once only passed around on VHS tapes at conventions. Thanks to the modern internet, the blooper reels are now readily available for all seekers, but for many years, the videos were deep-cut, inside baseball. Washburn, one might note, made her way onto the blooper reel for a scene from "The Deadly Years." She forgot her lines and everyone giggled at her flub. Washburn was not the least bit embarrassed, however, able to laugh along with everyone else. Sometimes, she found, it's okay to let your professionalism slip for a moment:

"As an actor, you try to come prepared and be on time and do everything right, but it was such a fun set that when I forgot my line it became a joke. I was supposed to say something like, 'There's something wrong with my hearing. I don't feel well.' And, instead, I said, 'I feel like hell. I can't remember my next line.' Everyone just cracked up and it was such a release to me. No one got upset. No one said, 'You need to be a professional.' Everybody was laughing and it was a fun moment."

That same blooper reel featured a few golden moments of Shatner messing around — and even dropping an f-bomb — while wearing his old-age makeup. There's even a creepy scene of the actor peeling the rubber mask off. From the looks of it, there was a lot of giggling all around.

¡Vuelve 'Star Trek'! Paramount acaba de poner en marcha una nueva película de la saga de ciencia ficción con el director de 'Andor'

Por otra parte, la cuarta entrega de la saga reboot iniciada por j.j. abrams continúa oficialmente en desarrollo.

Ya han pasado siete años desde que la divertidísima e injustamente infravalorada 'Star Trek: Más allá' llegó a nuestras salas de cine, cerrando la trilogía de reinicio para la gran pantalla de la icónica saga galáctica y, a su vez, abriendo la puerta a un drama sobre un tercera secuela que, tras una larga temporada de desgracias, cancelaciones y palos de ciego , muchos creíamos oficialmente perdida en los confines del universo.

Calentando el motor de la Enterprise

Pues bien, Variety trae muy buenas noticias para todos los que hemos disfrutado con la inesperada saga que inició J.J. Abrams y que nos hemos quedado con ganas de más viajes en la Enterprise. Según ha trascendido, la gente de Paramount ha puesto en marcha una nueva película de 'Star Trek' con Toby Haynes — 'Andor' — en el aseitno del director y con Seth Grahame-Smith — 'Batman: La LEGO película' — como guionista.

Por el momento, los detalles sobre el argumento de esta nueva película, que produce J.J. Abrams bajo el sello de Bad Robot, continúan guardándose con recelo. Lo único que sabemos por el momento es que se tratará de una historia de orígenes ambientada décadas antes del reboot de 2009 y que expandirá aún más el lore de la franquicia.

Pero ojo, porque esto no es todo, porque 'Star Trek 4' continúa oficialmente en desarrollo, siendo descrita como un "capítulo final" después de su anuncio oficial en 2016. Las últimas noticias que tuvimos sobre ella fue en febrero de 2022, cuando Abrams anunció en el día de inversores de Paramount Global que empezaría a rodarse ese mismo año con Chris Pine liderando de nuevo el reparto. Fue eliminada del calendario del estudio siete meses después.
