Although Waimea Canyon is nothing compared to the Grand Canyon in size, you have to admit – it’s still breathtaking. The Waimea Canyon trail offers gigantic and unbelievable views on such a tiny island. Self-guided driving tours with stops and lookouts make for a relaxing sightseeing day. Even paid tours for Waimea Canyon are well worth it because it’s impossible to discover all of it in just a single lifetime.

Waimea Canyon activities are generally free, which is great news for the majority of us (including me). However, if you find yourself with a lingering sense to learn more about the Waimea Canyon, go for the paid tour!

A Little Intro To Kauai’s Big Canyon

If you’re on Kauai, two things have got to be on your Kauai must do list: the Na Pali coast and the Waimea Canyon. While the Na Pali coast’s untamed cliffs will get your heart pumping, the Waimea Canyon with her ancient layers of time will give you chicken skin. In fact, Kauai has lava flow dating back to 5 million years ago, making Kauai the oldest island of Hawaii’s main islands.

Cool Fact: Waimea Canyon’s nickname is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific!

self guided tour of waimea canyon

The Waimea Canyon Trail

The Waimea Canyon trail (aka “Canyon trail”) is one of the most popular hikes to explore the Waimea Canyon. The trail takes you toward Waipoo falls, but you’ll pass several smaller waterfalls on the way if it’s been raining recently. While you won’t be able to reach the base of Waipoo falls, you’ll still get to see it at a closer distance. Plus, the views you’ll get on the Waimea Canyon trail are so much different than the view at the top so it’s certainly worth it.

Be prepared for the Waimea Canyon trail to go up and down, have plenty of tree roots, and some rather steep inclines. Be careful of rainy days where these ups and downs will have an effect on your traction and may cause you to slip and lose your footing. The best time to hike any Waimea Canyon trail is after a few sunny days to allow the rain to evaporate and dry out from the ground.

Another reason why the Waimea Canyon trail is a great choice is that kids love it! The challenges this hike provides really gets the blood pumping and it’s a completely different experience than Kauai’s numerous rainforest hikes. Plus, the added benefit of a waterfall, swimming pool (the smaller waterfalls are accessible) and potential mud seems to always be an incentive for kids.

Recommended Waimea Canyon Trail – Cliff Trail

Another way you can access the Waimea Canyon trail is via the Cliff trail. Park your car on the side of the road between mile markers 14 and 15 and walk down the dirt path until you get to a fork in the road. The way to the Cliff viewpoint is quick and easy and gorgeous. From there, you can easily backtrack to the fork and begin the Waimea Canyon trail.

Waimea Canyon Drives And Lookouts

Like the Waimea Canyon trail, driving along the canyon is free and fun. If you choose to view Waimea Canyon by car, there are  several lookouts along Kokee Road (Highway 550) that you can stop at but here are the more popular and well-maintained ones. What’s probably the most popular lookout is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, which is just past the 10 mile marker. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.

  • Waimea Canyon Lookout, just past the 10 mile marker. Probably the most popular lookout. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.
  • Puu Hinahina lookout at the 13 mile marker. The view you’ll get here is considerably different as you’ll be seeing the canyon from a curve. While the lookout itself is smaller than the Waimea Canyon Lookout, I still highly recommend Puu Hinahina lookout as the canyon will run perpendicular to you. There is also a small platform where you’ll be able to see Niihau island on a clear day.
  • At the 18 mile marker, you’ll come across Kalalau Lookout where you can view the famous Kalalau Valley that opens out to the Pacific Ocean and the Na Pali Coast. But, the best view that you’ll get of Kalalau Valley is at Puu O Kila Lookout about a mile later, and this one is a winner! Not only can you view the valley at a higher elevation, but there is also a ridge that you can walk around on to get different views and there is also Pihea Trail that you can hike from here as well.

Waimea Canyon Tours

  • The great thing about Kauai is that you get a huge bang for your buck on a helicopter tour . Na Pali and Waimea Canyon are both very famous and should certainly be experienced as much as possible. The helicopter ride will allow you to not only see an aerial view, but also discover beautiful gems such as hidden waterfalls and hard-to-see landmarks.
  • A bike tour downhill from Poipu is a wonderful way to explore the Waimea Canyon. You can enjoy the scenery outside throughout the length of the canyon. Plus, your guide will tell you all about the history and fun facts of the Waimea Canyon and the island itself.
  • There are also a bunch of Waimea Canyon  package tours  that you can try out. If you’re interested in waterfall swims, luaus, river cruises, jeep runs or in-depth hiking tours, this may be something for you to check out.

The waterfalls on this trail are truly spectacular, and although smaller in size than the Grand Canyon as you said it looks much greener (which I love). Thanks for sharing this valuable information, I hope to be able to visit Hawaii one day 🙂

Aloha Lenise! Ah, that’s true, now that I think about it. I was lucky enough to visit the Grand Canyon a couple of years back and the Waimea Canyon is certainly greener! Nice observation.

How To Experience The Kauai Grand Canyon At Waimea Canyon State Park

Waimea Canyon Lookout

Exploring Waimea Canyon State Park is a must for any visit to Kauai. Dubbed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the Kauai Canyon truly stands up to its name.

Grand Canyon of Hawaii Waimea Canyon State Park

During our family travel adventures, we have come across a number of places that have been dubbed the Grand Canyon of … whatever. Until we came across the Kauai Grand Canyon or the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, few of them have held a candle to that title.

Waimea Canyon State Park is a dramatic scar 10 miles long, one mile deep, and 3,500 ft deep in western Kauai. Along the Waimea Canyon drive are epic views that will take the breath of even the most seasoned traveler.

At 23 miles (37 km) this Kauai road trip is not even close in length to the famous Hana Highway on Maui . But view for view, the Waimea Canyon drive stacks up against it’s younger brother very well. Even exploring Waimea Canyon with kids is a treat.

The ample places to stop and explore, and the beautiful views, all combined with legendary Hawaii weather, make this one of the best Kauai day trips. And it’s not just the canyon views either. Waimea Canyon had surprises in store for us along the way that we were totally not expecting.

Waimea Canyon Lookout

What is Waimea Canyon State Park?

Table of Contents

Waimea Canyon has been carved over millions of years by the river and floods pouring down from the summit of Mount Waialeale, and it is considered one of the wettest places on earth. At the center of the Kauai canyon is the Waimea River.

Waimea stands for “red waters.” It’s not hard to understand how it got its name once you see the amber tones of the surrounding canyon walls. And it’s these views that make it one the best things to do in Kauai .

In Waimea Canyon State Park, you can experience much of the variety of landscapes, flora, and fauna that Kauai has to offer. There are many native birds that call this Kauai canyon home. You might even catch a glimpse of the Nene goose , the state bird of Hawaii.

We saw these elusive birds at the bottom of HWY 552 on our way out of the park. The Waimea Canyon drive takes visitors along HWY 550 through Waimea Canyon State Park and up to Kokee State Park, culminating in epic views of the Na Pali coast from the Puu O Kila lookout.

Tips For Your Waimea Canyon Drive

  • Get an early start. It’s easy for time to pass quickly with all of the beautiful views.
  • If you are short on time, head straight to Kalalua viewpoint and make your way down from there.
  • There is no entrance fee to Waimea Canyon State Park. The park is open year-round.
  • There are no gas stations along the Waimea Canyon drive. Make sure you fill up in Waimea town before you head out.
  • There are two driving routes into Waimea Canyon. Hwy 550 enters from Waimea town, and HWY 552 enters from Kekahu. I recommend taking one route in and a different route out.
  • There are restrooms available at the Waimea Canyon Lookout and the Pu’u O Kila.
  • Certain Waimea Canyon hikes require permits. Check with the ranger station for maps and permits.
  • If the Kalalau viewpoint is cloudy when you arrive, just wait. The clouds pass quickly here, and you won’t want to miss the view.
  • If you hear what sounds like babies crying from within the Kauai grand canyon, don’t fret. That is the sound of the wild goats that live in the canyon.
  • Make sure you’re prepared for the weather with the right clothes. Things can get windy or rainy, especially up near the Na Pali coast. Prepare for your trip with our Hawaii packing list .
  • Consider staying west of the Na Pali Coast if you want to get a full-day of hiking and exploring Waimea State Park. You can find our full list of the best places to stay on Kauai here .

The Best Stops For A Waimea Canyon Drive

Driving through Waimea Canyon State Park is beautiful. It is very easy to get carried away and stop at every turn and pull off along the Kauai canyon drive. Unfortunately, unless you have a day or two to experience the best stops in Waimea Canyon, you’ll need to skip a few, even if it hurts a little inside. So to help you out, here is my list of must-see stops on a Waimea Canyon drive.

You should set aside at least 5-7 hours for your Waimea Canyon drive. If you plan on hiking Waimea Canyon, you’ll need much more than that.

Red Dirt Waterfall – Mile Marker 4.5

There is no shortage of waterfalls in Kauai. But few of the Kauai waterfalls stand out quite as much as the red dirt waterfall along HWY 55o in Waimea Canyon State Park. The burnt amber color of the surrounding landscape is a stunning contrast to the rainbow of colors through much of the canyon. While the red dirt waterfall isn’t big, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character.

The Kauai canyon red dirt waterfall is located on the left side of the road. There is a small parking area on the right side. To access it, you’ll need to hop a small roadside barrier. The red dirt waterfall in Waimea Canyon is a wonderful place to step out and stretch your legs. You can hike along the narrow stream that feeds the falls.

Red Dirt Waterfall Waimea Canyon State Park

Waimea Canyon Lookout – Mile Marker 10

The official Waimea Canyon lookout is at the mouth of the Waimea Canyon hiking trail. This well- placed Waimea Canyon overlook gives one of the best angles to take in the expanse of the canyon. There is a large parking area and restrooms available. You can often purchase fresh or dried fruit from a stand here as well.

Because of the amenities and access to Waimea Canyon hikes, the Puu Hinahina lookout can get busy. It was definitely the busiest of the lookouts when we arrived. However, it has a large two-level viewing platform to make up for that. The top platform is wheelchair accessible as well.

Puu Hinahina Lookout Waimea Canyon Kauai

Puu Ka Pele Lookout – Mile Marker 13

The Puu Ka Pele lookout is often overlooked by those heading to nearby Puu Hinahina lookout. However, this small viewpoint at mile marker 13 offers the closest view of the dramatic Waipo’o Falls. If you are looking for a great photo of the falls, this is probably the place to get it. Watch your step, though. There are no barriers, and the drop is quite steep.

self guided tour of waimea canyon

Puu Hinahina Lookout – Mile Marker 13.5

Although the Puu Hinahina lookout is just a short distance from the Puu Ka Pele lookout, it offers a far different view of Waimea Canyon. Here there is a bend in the canyon that offers a very cool look at the shape of the valley below. There is a small platform from which you can see straight out to the Pacific Ocean. In fact, on a clear day, you might even be able to see the forbidden island of Niihau.

Kauai Canyon Grand Canyon Hawaii

Puu O Kila Lookout Over Kalalau Valley – Off Mile Marker 23

The long Waimea Canyon drive culminates in one of the best viewpoints in Kauai. Puu O Kila lookout sits at mile marker 23, and if you get there when clouds don’t cover it, you’ll be treated to something spectacular. Even our boys had to stop and catch their breath as they watched the clouds snake over the mountain top.

If you look closely, you’ll see towering waterfalls cascading down the side of Waialeale. The Alakai swamp (which is the highest swamp in the world) coats everything in a thick sea of rich green. The clouds above cast dark shadows that cause the valley below to appear to change shape nearly constantly.

The Puu O Kila lookout also has the Pihea trail that offers a beautiful ridge hike with incredible views. On this hike, you’ll really get an appreciation of the shape of the valley.

Waimea Canyon Hiking

We were staying about an hour from Waimea canyon in the town of Kapa’a in eastern Kauai. If you plan on doing a lot of hiking in Waimea Canyon, you may want to consider staying a little closer in the town of Waimea, Hanapepe, or Kekeha.

This will allow you to maximize your time on the Waimea Canyon trails and save a LOT of driving back and forth. You can pick up a map of the Kauai canyon hikes at the Ranger’s Station for a donation. This is a good idea as some of the trails may not be clearly marked.

Dressing for Waimea Canyon Hikes

If your plan is to hike the Kauai canyon, make sure you dress appropriately. You have the potential to see a lot of different weather here, and it’s best to be prepared. Hikes along the canyon can be windy. Although these storms are usually brief, you may also come under heavy rain.

I recommend you bring a water-resistant windbreaker to help you stay comfortable. Temperatures normally stay pretty warm, so you don’t need anything heavy.

You’ll also want good-quality hiking boots. Things can get rough and muddy on any Waimea Canyon hike. And there are many steep drops offs, so having a good grip on your shoe is highly recommended. You’ll also want pants that can withstand a stain. With the beautiful red coloring that makes Waimea Canyon State Park stand out comes a lot of clothing stains.

Waimea Canyon hikes

Hiking in Waimea Canyon

There are a number of amazing Waimea Canyon hikes, including Kalau Valley, Lower Waipo’o Falls, and the Canyon Trail. Many of the trails are very natural and see only a handful of visitors each day.

Most people who visit Waimea Canyon State Park tend to stay on the road and upper trails. Some of the hikes can have very steep drop-offs. Others can involve clamoring over large boulders along the way.

For families, the Cliff Trail is an easy Waimea hiking trail. There is parking available near the trailhead, and the views along the way are spectacular.

The Canyon Trail and the Black Pipe Trail are worth the visit for something a little more ambitious. The Canyon Trail is a 3.4-mile roundtrip that takes your right to Waipo’o Falls. The Black Pipe Trail feeds the Canyon Trail. at .8 miles, it’s not long. However, it takes you through a Koa forest for a very different view of life in Waimea Canyon.

If you’re really looking for a challenge, you may want to try the Kukui Trail. This 5-mile trail takes you from the top of the cliffs down to the canyon floor. But make sure you save your energy. The real workout is on the 2-mile trek back to the top.

Hiking Waimea Canyon With Kids

The Grand Canyon Of The Pacific – Busting A Popular Myth

Contrary to popular belief, the name the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” wasn’t bestowed by the famed American writer Mark Twain. To Twain’s credit, he’s a far too creative wordsmith to give it such an overused name. In fact, even the Grand Canyon didn’t receive its official name until 1908, two years before Twain died.

Furthermore, Mark Twain never visited the island of Kauai. He did travel to Hawaii in 1866, the year before the actual Grand Canyon received its moniker by explorer John Wesley Powell, but he visited Maui , Oahu, and the Big Island . You can read more about that story here .

Inspired stuff Kevin! We came across a canyon is the deserts of Oman earlier this year. Unreal. Humbles you, seeing the chasm and surrounding hills.

Sounds amazing Ryan! Oman has been on our watchlist of a while. I can't wait to take my kids there.

Gosh, Kauai looks amazing :)

It really is! Each of the Hawaiian islands offers something truly unique and special. The Waimea Canyon is definitely the crown jewel of Kauai.

Oh I just loved looking at all your photos and reading about your adventure here. It reminded me of when we visited back in 2016 on honeymoon. I was 4 months pregnant at the time and suffered the worst sickness and dizziness at that Waimea lookout that I almost fainted! But thats just an excuse to visit again, this time with two daughters in tow :)

Oh no! I'm sorry that happened, what a place to get ill :( But now that your children are born it's a great excuse to go back. I love your attitude!

Karen Quinn

Those hikes look amazing, I always find canyons fascinating so will be adding this to my must visit list!

They are so gorgeous. Especially the way the shadows of the clouds play over the landscape.

Kauai Adventure: Waimea Canyon Scenic Drive

Jasmin Diaz

Do you want to see all the most beautiful sights on Kauai? If so, you need to take a scenic drive along Waimea Canyon . Across its 14-mile stretch, you’ll get to check out stunning cliffsides, waterfalls, and so much more. Plus, it takes you right in the range of two incredible state parks, allowing you to go on even more explorations. Ready to hit the road? Here’s what you can expect on this island road trip.

All About the Waimea Canyon in Kauai

self guided tour of waimea canyon

With its unofficial moniker of “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” how can you expect anything but perfection from Waimea Canyon? You won’t be disappointed either because it definitely lives up to its name even though it’s smaller than the real deal. While driving along the edge, it’ll feel every bit as big and wondrous though, especially if you stop at the lookout to admire the wide open landscape.

The Waimea Canyon is 3,600 feet deep, after all, and stretches on for one mile wide. As you drive the 14-plus miles along its length, the canyon promises to delight you with phenomenal views. The canyon formed as the Waimea River cut through the shield volcano, so you can expect breathtaking cliffsides and other geological formations from end to end. On top of that, waterfalls spread across the landscape, creating a truly lush habitat for all the local birds and wildlife.

How to Get Ready for Your Road Trip Adventures

self guided tour of waimea canyon

If you want to enjoy your Waimea Canyon scenic drive to the fullest, it pays to be prepared. Thankfully, you can do that quite easily by simply following these steps.

1. Plan to Pay the Fee

As a visitor to the island, you must pay for entrance and parking to visit Waimea Canyon State Park and Kokee State Park . You will need to cover the $5 entrance fee for each person in your car over the age of three. Kids age three and under are free.

In addition, you must pay a $10 per vehicle rate for parking if you’re driving a non-commercial vehicle. Drivers of commercial vehicles have to pay anywhere from $25 to $90 for parking.

You only have to pay one fee for the day, and it covers the drive plus parking at all of the overlooks, trailheads, and other lots. The pay stations are located in all the parking lots, making it easy to get your passes sorted.

2. Pack Up Your Ride

You won’t find any restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, or other stops once you start heading toward the canyon. So, take the time to pack up what you need and get the rest of your supplies before leaving the coast.

To maximize your road trip fun, you should bring:

  • Paper map of Kauai
  • Bottled water and protein bars
  • Emergency roadside kit
  • Space blanket
  • SPF 50+ sunblock
  • Locally sourced bug spray

Don’t forget your camera as well, so you can take photo after photo of the magnificence before you.

After that, stop by the gas station to fill up your tank with fuel, and then go inside to get drinks and snacks. If you prefer to save a bit of money on your road trip eats, go to the Big Save Market for all you need.

You might also want to either eat a meal while you’re in town or grab takeout for the road. Popular restaurants near the start of the trip include Porky’s Kauai , Gina’s Anykine Grinds CafĂ© , and Island Taco .

3. Time It Just Right

The Waimea Canyon scenic drive is a delight year-round, but the vegetation hits its peak beauty in the late spring. The fall season is equally wonderful, especially if it has been raining a lot in the weeks prior to your visit.

Want to beat the crowds and enjoy the best views possible? Time your road trip for the morning hours, for sure. You’ll also want to pick a clear day with mild weather conditions.

If you go out on a rainy day, the clouds will obstruct your view and the trails will be muddy and slippery. On a hot, sunny day, you’ll get overheated fast if you want to walk the trails for any length of time.

Once you’re ready to go, all that’s left to do is hop in your ride and hit the road.

What You Need to Know About the Canyon Drive

self guided tour of waimea canyon

Although you can definitely take Kokee Road up to the canyon’s edge, Waimea Canyon Drive is the best way to go. The route is fully paved, but it’s still wise to take it slow because it’s a small two-lane road.

To get there, you’ll need to turn on the drive from Kaumualii Highway after packing up your ride. Then, continue on the route as it takes you through town and the fields beyond.

Before you know it, you’ll arrive at Kekaha Lookout , which provides the first glimpse of all the beauty ahead. From there, you will come across several more lookouts, including:

  • Niihau Lookout
  • Stream and Canyon Lookout
  • Lakoba Lookout
  • Hohonu Awawa Lookout
  • Puu Ka Pele Lookout

Puu Hinahina Lookout lies at the end of the canyon, but you must walk down the trail to take a peek. Fortunately, it’s well worth the effort as it allows you to look south along the full length of the canyon.

Since trees block the view along much of the roadway, take full advantage of every lookout to see every last inch of the gorgeous canyon. Each one gives you a minute to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh island air as well.

End Your Day with a Visit to the Nearby State Parks

self guided tour of waimea canyon

Since you already paid for access to both Waimea Canyon State Park and Kokee State Park, it just makes sense to stick around and explore. As long as you’re prepared for the adventures ahead, you can go hiking, picnicking, backpacking, and picnicking to your heart’s content.

If you cannot bear to break yourself away from the beautiful parklands, consider coming back for a camping trip to remember. There are many excellent cabins and campgrounds in Kokee State Park, letting you spend the nights stargazing and wake up each morning to the sound of birdsong.

Waimea Canyon  'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific'

Kauai sights.

Dubbed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" by Mark Twain, Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific and truly a dramatic sight to behold at ten miles long, one mile wide, and more than 3,500 ft. deep.

Carved thousands of years ago by rivers and floods that flowed from Mount Waialeale's summit, the canyon is home to the Waimea River. The river was named for the red hue of the water, as Waimea means 'red waters.' The red tint is caused by several natural processes that break down the ancient rock inside the gorge. Like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, through the processes of weathering (precipitation), mass wasting (gravitational breakdown), and erosion (by the river), the walls of Waimea Canyon are literally being rusted, broken down, and carried out to sea over time. From space, you can even see the tinted runoff making its way into the ocean.

*As of April 19, 2021, all visitors will need to pay a $5 entrance fee to visit the Kokee & Waimea State Park in addition to any parking fees.

Waimea Canyon Lookouts

There are three "official" lookout spots from which you can view the Waimea Canyon: the official Waimea Canyon lookout (just past Mile Marker 10 on Hwy. 550); the Puu Ka Pele lookout (a smaller lookout near mile marker 13 on Hwy. 550); and Puu Hinahina Lookout (between mile markers 13-14 on Hwy. 550), which we believe to be the best of the three lookouts.

A word of advice: before you begin your journey up Hwy. 550 be sure to check your gas gauge. The round trip is about 36 miles with an elevation change of 4,000 feet. Take Hwy. 50 west from Hanapepe toward Waimea. Waimea Canyon Drive is on the right just past mile marker 23. The road travels through the canyon area and ends at Puu o Kila Lookout. Makaha Ridge Road runs off Waimea Canyon Road just before mile marker 14 and travels to more scenic lookouts. Numerous lookouts and trails lead off of these two roads.

Whether you explore Waimea Canyon by yourself or with a guide, you simply must see its spectacular beauty in person!

Welcome to the t our in kauai hawaii.

Aloha! Buckle up for a tropical adventure you’ll never forget! Cruise through lush jungles, walk along pristine beaches, and dive into the history of the beautiful island of Kauai.

On the Kauai tour, you will learn about the culture and how everything changed when sugar plantations arrived. Hear about clashing cultures and a failed Russian invasion? No, really!

We are proud to be an official Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau member.

HVCB Logo

About the Tour

Explore Kauai and discover why it’s called “the Garden Isle.” This stunningly lush island is covered in tropical rainforest, bursting at the seams with life of all kinds. This drive will take you along the most famous stretch of Kauai’s historic highway and show you all the best sights the island offers.

Visit Grove Farm, where you’ll glimpse what remains of the once-booming sugar plantation industry, then turn back the clock to the time of ultra-rich sugar barons. Hear about this enormous industry, its connection to the American Civil War, and what life was like for the lavishly wealthy owners.

Then, treat yourself to the fabulous Poipu Beach, where sand and surf meet in perfect harmony, and you can always see some surfers hitting the waves. And be sure to keep your eyes open!

If you’re lucky, you might spot Rocky, a Hawaiian monk seal who’s something of a celebrity on Kauai.

Don’t miss the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge on your Kauai tour! This precarious bridge spans a jaw-dropping valley and offers views and an experience like nowhere else on Earth.

Along the way on the Kauai tour, we’ll fill you in on the fascinating, complex history of Kauai and Hawaii as a whole. Hear about how the first people journeyed across miles of ocean on tiny canoes to get here, learn about their kings and traditions, and get a close-up look at how the arrival of American businesses changed the islands forever.

Be prepared for the unexpected, like an attempted Russian invasion that took place in the 19th century!

And, of course, visit the so-called Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon. This 3,000-foot-deep canyon is as lush and green as the rest of the island and is guaranteed to take your breath away. Don’t forget to snap plenty of photos to make your friends jealous!

Along the way, we’ll point out all of Kauai’s best hiking spots, from accessible walking routes to more advanced trails which lead to awe-inspiring overlooks. It’s easy to drive straight past these in the dense jungle, but we’ll ensure you don’t miss anything!

Finally, we’ll arrive at the Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, a perfectly secluded slice of the jungle, cliffs, and crashing ocean with all you can want from Kauai packed into one place!

What You'll See

Welcome to kauai.

Prepare to embark on a drive through paradise! This tour takes you through all the most beautiful, most exciting parts of Kauai. Discover the very best this island has to offer from the comfort of your car or a rental.

Your first stop is Kalapaki, home to a pristine white beach and some impossibly calm water, thanks to a sea wall which keeps the waves at bay.

Sugarcane & Grove Farm

Get a dose of Hawaiian history at the Sugarcane & Grove Farm, where you'll learn about how this cash crop forever altered the course of Hawaii's future.

Tree Tunnel

You won't have to wait long to experience some of Kauai's signature jungle beauty. The "Tree Tunnel" is a mile-long tunnel of eucalyptus trees which make for some seriously picturesque driving.

Old Koloa Town

Get a glimpse into the past at Old Koloa Town, a quaint little village dating back to the days of sugar plantations.

Detour To Old Sugar Mill Of Koloa

Those hoping to learn more about Hawaii's sugar history can take a detour to an old sugar mill next.

Poipu Beach

Why settle for one beach when you can have two in one spot? Poipu Beach consists of two sandy crescents forming a double beach, and is a perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and much more.

Hanapepe Valley Lookout

Continuing on, you'll reach the Hanapepe Valley Lookout. Don't forget to bring a camera when you check out these outstanding views!

Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

In the town of Hanapepe you'll encounter the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge. This fun attraction might seem unstable when the weather turns windy, but don't worry, it's actually supposed to sway as much as it does!

Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park

Up next is a truly strange historical landmark: a Russian fort left over from a failed invasion attempt! Get to know the story behind it as you explore this peculiar piece of history.

Niihau: The Forbidden Island

You'll then pass Niihau, also known as The Forbidden Island. This privately-owned island has been forbidden to visitors for generations.

Red Dirt Waterfall

Your route takes you next past an unusual attraction, the Red Dirt Waterfall. This waterfall is exactly what it sounds like; it gets its red color from a high concentration of iron in the soil.

Kukui Trail & Iliau Nature Loop

The Kukui Trail, up next, is a great option for experienced hikers, while those looking for an easier trek will love the Iliau Nature Loop. Both are great ways to get better acquainted with Kauai's gorgeous natural scenery.

Waimea Canyon State Park

Your route leads next to the so-called "Grand Canyon of the Pacific": Waimea Canyon. If anything on this trip is an absolute must-see, it's this. You truly won't believe your eyes!

Pu’u Hinahina Lookout

For the best look at the Waimea Canyon, proceed to the Pu'u Hinahina Lookout. Here, you'll have the chance to snap some photos that are guaranteed to make your friends jealous!

Waimea Canyon Trails

If you want to actually trek into the canyon itself, you'll come next to the Waimea Canyon Trails, offering incredible hikes for all experience levels--as well as plenty of extra viewpoints!

KƍkeÊ»e Natural History Museum

Want some souvenirs and a bit of extra education? Check out the Koke'e Natural History Museum, a free museum dedicated to the island's flora and fauna.

KƍkeÊ»e State Park

Up next is Koke'e State Park, an essential stop if you haven't gotten enough of hiking and smelling wildflowers.

Kalalau Lookout

One of the last lookouts on your tour is the Kalalau Lookout, offering spectacular views from the highest point accessible by road on the whole island.

Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

Next is the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, featuring dramatic bluffs and crashing waves. It's no wonder Hollywood has used this as a filming location more than once, including for one of the Jurassic Park movies!

Pu’u O Kila Lookout - Conclusion

Finally, you'll arrive at one last vista: Pu'u O Kila Lookout. The tour will conclude at this stunning overlook.

How do I get to the secret beach in Kauai?

As the name suggests, this beach is not the easiest place to access, be prepared to hike through some undergrowth, and use an unmarked trail to find this hidden gem. The unmarked trail forks off of an unnamed dirt road. From Kilauea, head north on Kuhio highway, towards Hanalei. Then, you’ll take a right onto Kalihiwai. Drive a short distance and then take a right onto the unmarked dirt road. Park and walk all the way to the end of the road. At the end, you’ll find a small path that you’ll walk on for 10-15 minutes. Be prepared for a steep walk, and pick your day wisely, after a heavy rain this path can be treacherous. This path will lead you directly to the Secret Beach.

What is the biggest waterfall in Kauai?

One of Kauai’s most famous waterfalls is Wailua. Wailua Falls are the biggest on the Garden Isle. Falling 173 dizzying feet, this beauty is a popular drive-by attraction.

How many waterfalls are in Kauai?

There are eleven waterfalls on the Garden Isle in total.

The best part yet is that so many of the waterfalls on Kauai are highly accessible. Many of these beauties can be viewed right from the road or after a short walk.

Waimea Valley Waterfall Directions

Waimea Valley is on Oahu’s famous North Shore. The valley is as famous as the popular beach and big wave surfing spot of Waimea Bay which is located adjacent to the valley entrance.

Waimea Valley is located 10 minutes (4.5 miles) north of Hale’iwa and an hour (34 miles) from Honolulu. Click for directions to Waimea Valley.

Our Waimea Valley Waterfall Experience

Our family visits Waimea Valley during most of our trips to the North Shore. Watch our latest visit below as we explored the cultural sights and went swimming in the 40-foot falls at the end of the valley.

Here is why we like visiting Waimea Valley waterfall and gardens:

  • The waterfall is one of the best on the island and the safest for swimming
  • The walk to the waterfall is an easy hike at 1/3-mile on a paved trail that goes through the botanical gardens so it is great for kids
  • Waimea Valley is a Hawaiian non-profit. Part of their mission is to preserve the valley, rejuvenate the land, and share the history and culture of the Hawaiians who lived here.

Waimea Valley waterfall makes our list of the top things to do in Hawaii and our #1 easy hike on Oahu .

Waimea Valley Waterfall Tour Details

Take a walk through the beautiful botanical gardens of Waimea Valley to end at a gorgeous waterfall cascading into one of the safest waterfall swim areas. This is a great option for families as the walk to the waterfall is only about 1/3 of a mile with plenty to see on the way. For those who prefer, they also offer a shuttle to the falls for an extra cost per person. We love this waterfall for its safety. We feel great about having a lifeguard on duty and life vests available at no additional cost.

One of the best things about this self-guided tour is the flexibility it offers. Tickets are general admission, so you can arrive at whatever time is best for your vacation. We recommend booking your admission a few days to a week in advance to avoid the line. They even offer discounts for military members, seniors, students, children, and groups.

Expect to spend 2-3 hours there, but you’re welcome as long as they’re open.

If you want some extra information about what’s blooming, join their staff at 12:30pm daily for their “What’s Blooming Botanical Tour,” that is included in the admission price.

They also have a coffee house, bar, and snack bar on location for goodies and refreshments.

Swimming at the waterfall is dependent on daily waterfall conditions, lifeguards make the swim call for the day at 9am. Call 808-638-7766 to check on the status of the waterfall.

waimea valley waterfall swim hike paved trailes

Make the north shore a full-day affair with a Luau to cap off a lovely day after visiting the botanical gardens and waterfall. One of the best luaus on the island is the Toa Luau , which is located within Waimea Valley.

The Toa Luau offers two shows per day, at 12:30pm and 5:00pm, giving you maximum flexibility to structure your day. If you choose to go to the luau, general admission to Waimea Valley for the day is included in the luau ticket.

About Waimea Valley

Waimea Valley is owned and protected by a partnership of city, county, state, and federal-level organizations. These organizations came together to create Hi’ipaka LLC, a Hawaiian non-profit dedicated to preserving and rejuvenating the land while engaging and educating visitors.

As a way to achieve these goals, Waimea Valley offers a more interactive way through the botanical gardens: Ka’apuni o Waimea.

The overarching cultural value of Ka’apuni o Waimea is ho’okipa – which is hospitality from a cultural perspective, the action of treating others as we would like to be treated. It is our hope that through this experience, guests will learn about the positive impact of ho’okipa, and will carry this attitude throughout the island.

Guests who choose to participate in this more immersive educational experience (as part of the walk through the botanical gardens) will receive an identifying sticker at each cultural site. Once completed, you will earn a Ho’okipa Cultural Ambassador Certificate and a unique Waimea Valley collectible pin.

Ka’apuni o Waimea is just one example of the great care that goes into cultivating a rich experience for Waimea Valley guests.
