The Breakdown

Orla Chennaoui is a multilingual TV sports presenter (French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian & Portuguese), event host and journalist with experience working in both hard news and sport.

As a Lead Presenter for both TNT Sports and Discovery/Eurosport/GCN, Orla works across cycling, rugby, MotoGP and the Olympics amongst other things.

Orla has presented cycling on location from multiple Tours de France, Giros d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana, three Olympic Games (London, Rio and Tokyo) and one Commonwealth Games (Glasgow), and currently presents all Grand Tours and significant races from The Cube - a high tech studio in London.

During the winter season, Orla presents rugby on TNT Sports, bringing the fan pitch side and close to the action, alongside legendary pundits of the game such as Lawrence Dallaglio.

A background in news and investigations has dictated a generally hard-news approach in Orla's sports reporting, while through presenting she has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge across a broad range of sports.

In May 2019 Orla joined Eurosport as the lead presenter for their cycling coverage alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins. Orla hosted all of the action, live and daily highlights for the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana amongst other prominent races in the calendar. Since 2020, Orla has presented The Breakaway for the public to keep in touch with the action as it happens from the studio.

In 2021, after the world waited a year, Orla led the broadcasting of the Olympic Games for Discovery/Eurosport on the ground in Tokyo. Alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins, Greg Rutherford and others, they presented informative and nail-biting coverage across all sports and brought out the emotion of medal winning interviews to the people at home.

At the end of 2021, Orla also presented the highly anticipated inaugural UCI Track Champions League, presenting live from the velodromes in Mallorca, Lithuania and the UK, which she repeated for the 2022 series across all venues.

Away from the camera, Orla continues co-hosting The Cycling Podcast Feminin, and writing regular columns for Rouleur magazine and Metro newspaper. Orla was the guest editor for Rouleur Issue 101 - a Women’s special, landmark edition to celebrate what it is to be female in modern cycling which is, to date, Rouleur’s biggest selling issue.

In 2022 Orla launched another podcast venture, The Breakdown , alongside Olympian Greg Rutherford where they meet sports stars and celebs to discuss components of success, the battles common to us all, and the elements of sport that unify each and every one of us.

Alongside her broadcasting and journalistic career Orla also relishes live hosting opportunities hosting events such as Rouleur Live and corporate brand opportunities providing industry insight along with a collection of other influential guests, and inspiring others within the sports arena. Recent brands Orla has worked with include Kia, Shimano, Ford and adidas.

In early 2023, Orla launched her latest personal venture, Ten Times Braver (TTB)  - a community of support, lifestyle hacks, events and tips to overcome the fears holding you back.

To spread the TTB message, Orla led a motivational speaking session for Belstaff which was a huge success. Belstaff CEO Fran Millar said, '"as a people focussed organisation, we are always looking for new ways to engage our team in purposeful conversations about their own well-being and mental health.  Orla provided a fresh, unique approach: authentic, empathetic but full of energy and power – the team came away buzzing and inspired."

Orla has a degree in Law with French and a post grad in journalism and away from presenting Orla is a keen part time yogi, outdoor swimmer, and full time Mum.

Tour de france: who is eurosport presenter orla chennaoui.

The presenter formerly covered the Olympics for Sky Sports

Orla Chennaoui is currently leading Eurosport’s coverage of the Tour de France, but how much do you know about the sports presenter? The 42-year-old has been part of the station’s coverage of cycling events since 2019 and has been working in the journalism industry for more than two decades.

Chennaoui was born in Draperston, County Londonderry, in Northern Ireland.

Initially, Chennaoui undertook an undergraduate degree in Law and French at Queen’s Belfast University, before moving to Edinburgh to complete a postgraduate diploma in journalism at Napier University.

The presenter worked in print journalism at first, spending time with Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News .

Her first job in broadcasting came at 2 Ten FM, a local radio station in Berkshire, and she later joined Sky News as their Northern Ireland correspondent in 2005.

Chennaoui did have ambitions to become a war correspondent but found the requirements of the job too difficult.

After covering the Olympics for Sky in 2012, Chennaoui decided she wanted to work in sport permanently and moved to Sky Sports.

Having spent 14 years at Sky, Chennaoui moved to Eurosport in 2019.

Former athlete

Chennaoui was a talented athlete growing up and is a former all-Ireland triple jump champion.

Speaking on the The Game Changers podcast, she said: “I used to be a track and field athlete as a kid,” she said. “It was such a huge part of my life growing up. I think only now that I’m considerably older, I realise how formative it’s been in my character, my strength and my discipline.

“I dreamt for years of representing Ireland at the Olympic Games and it never happened, but it has led me into this beautiful career. That’s actually been considerably more rewarding, so I’m very grateful for that.”

What’s happening in the Tour de France?

It was Australia’s Michael Matthews who won the hilly stage 14 of the race –– escaping a 23-man break early on the 192.5km ride from Saint-Etienne to Mende.

Matthews was overtaken by Alberto Bettiol on the final climb but managed to regain the lead and secure the fourth stage victory of his career.

Overall, after 14 stages, Demark’s Jonas Vingegaard leads with an overall time of 55 hours, 31 minutes and one second.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar is second as he seeks a third straight Tour de France title.

Britain’s Geraint Thomas, who won the race in 2018, is in third place as it stands.

This Former Pro Cyclist Is Commentating the Tour de France Femmes and She’s Crushing It

Hannah Walker is bringing a lifelong passion for the sport plus in-depth knowledge and experience to this year’s race.

hannah walker twitter selfie

No offense to Phil Liggett and Bob Roll and their disappointing performance as commentators for NBC/Peacock during Stage 1 of this year’s Tour de France Femmes, but Walker is such a refreshing voice in the mix. She and McCrossen regularly commentate together on pro women’s races, and the duo bring a professional tone backed up by a depth of knowledge.

In an interview for SBS Sport , about commentating the Tour de France Femmes, Walker said, “It’s been such a wonderful experience to see where the sport has come over the last 10 years, and to be at this moment now and see these riders making history, and to be be able to commentate on this and be on the ground and see the atmosphere that builds during the day and at the finish line…it’s incredible to be a part of.”

Just like in pro cycling, where women have had to fight their way in, the same has been true for commentating.

Walker says she grew up watching the men’s Tour de France and other world tours, and always wanted to watch women, but the coverage was never available. “It was very rare that we could even see the women’s side on television, and look at where we are now. You can see every world tour and women’s race live on television.”

Walker’s first Grand Tour coverage was for La Vuelta a España in 2020. Since then she’s covered numerous races and tours on the men’s side and the women’s side. We look forward to more sharp insights from Walker on everything from team dynamics to technical logistics throughout the week!

Introducing the Tour de France 2023

sky tour de france commentators 2023

The Tour de France 2023 will hold its Grand Départ in the Basque Country, with a first stage in Bilbao on 1st July, and will finish in Paris on 23rd July, on completion of a 3,404-km route that will tackle the difficult slopes of the country’s five mountain ranges.

The Grand Départ will be the second to take place in the autonomous region of the Basque Country after Saint-Sébastien’s in 1992 and the 25th to be held abroad. After three stages on the western side of the Pyrenees, the rest of the Tour will take place in France. It will visit 6 regions and 23 departments.

The battle for the Yellow Jersey will witness a decisive and emotional episode on the Puy de Dôme, where a stage finish will be held 35 years after the victory of Denmark’s Johnny Weltz. The return to this legendary climb will be accompanied by the rise in importance of sites that will mark the Tours of the future, such as the Grand Colombier or the Col de la Loze.

The sole time-trial on the Tour de France in 2023 will take place over 22 kilometres between Passy and the Combloux ski resort in Haute-Savoie. The sprinters will also have the opportunity to express themselves on finishes in Bordeaux, Limoges, Moulins, before the grand finale on the Champs-Elysées.

In summary, the tour will see riders tackle:

• 8 flat stages • 4 hilly stages • 8 mountain stages with • 4 summit finishes (Cauterets-Cambasque, Puy de Dôme, Grand Colombier and Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc) • 1 individual time trial • 2 rest days

The Puy de Dôme, which hasn’t appeared on the Tour route since 1988, will be making an eagerlyawaited return after its 35-year absence.

The Col de la Loze (2,304m) will be the “roof” of the Tour de France 2023.

These bonus points will not count towards the points classification.

PRIZE MONEY

A total of 2,3 million euros will be awarded to the teams and riders including € 500,000 to the final winner of the overall individual classification.

2023 STAGE GUIDE

** ITT - Individual Time Trial

Race organisers, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) have extended an invite to all 18 UCI WorldTeams, as well as four UCI ProTeams, to make up the 22-team peloton.

WHAT IS THERE TO WIN?

The rules are the Bible of a sporting competition. Their balance and rigour are intended to ensure equal opportunities, motivate riders and help spectators and viewers alike to understand the event. Here is an outline of the main points.

Prize money: A total of 2,3 million euros will be awarded to the teams and riders including € 500,000 to the final winner of the overall individual classification.

THE STAKES A wide range of objectives coexist in the peloton, depending on each rider's disposition, strong points and assigned tasks. The most team-oriented of individual sports gives the majority of them a role in multi-layered strategies. The distinctive jerseys and other honours up for grabs during the 3 weeks of racing are listed below.

• Stage victories The 21 stages of the 2023 Tour can be broken down as follows: 8 flat stages, 4 hilly stages, 8 mountain stages with 4 summit finishes (Cauterets-Cambasque, Puy de Dôme, Grand Colombier and Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc), 1 individual time trial.

Stage victories are sponsored by Continental.

• The Yellow Jersey This jersey is worn by the leader of the general time classification. The yellow jersey is sponsored by LCL.

• The Green Jersey This jersey is worn by the leader of the general points classification. Points are awarded at the intermediate sprint in each mass-start stage and the finish of each stage. The green jersey is sponsored by Škoda.

• The Red Polka Dot Jersey This jersey is worn by the best climber in the general classification. Mountain points are awarded at the top of every categorised climb. The points for a summit finish are doubled. The red polka-dot jersey is sponsored by E.Leclerc.

• The White Jersey This jersey is worn by the best young rider (age 25 or under in the current year) in the general classification. The white jersey is sponsored by Krys.

• The Combativity Award This distinction is awarded at the end of each stage by a jury made up of cycling specialists. An overall winner is designated after the last stage of Le Tour. The winner wears red-coloured race numbers in the next stage. The combativity award is sponsored by Century 21.

• The team classification This classification is calculated by adding the times of each team's three best riders on each stage. Riders in the team leading the classification wear yellow helmets and race numbers. The team classification is sponsored by Les Hauts-de-Seine.

• Seconds up for grabs Time bonuses are awarded at the end of every mass-start stage (i.e. no time bonuses on offer in individual and team time trials). The first three riders get 10, 6 and 4 seconds, respectively.

• Mandatory helmet use All cyclists are required to wear helmets throughout the duration of each stage.

• Falls in the last three kilometres As has been the case since 2005, riders involved in a fall in the last three kilometres of a stage are given the same finishing time as the group they were riding in. Time trial stages and summit finishes are not covered by this rule.

Tour de France FAQs

Q: Why is the Tour overall leader's jersey yellow?

A: In 1919, Tour organisers decided the race leader should wear a special jersey making him easy to identify by spectators. They picked yellow as it was the colour of the paper on which L'Auto, the sports daily sponsoring the race, was printed.

Q: What is the green jersey?

A: It is the jersey awarded for the points classification and a great consolation prize for sprinters as they usually win more stages, albeit by a slimmer margin.

Points are awarded to the top 20 finishers in each stage; the rider finishing with the most points wins the jersey. The record green jersey winner is German Erik Zabel, who won it six times.

It was introduced 60 years ago to spice up the race.

Q: What is the polka dot jersey?

A: It is the jersey awarded to the best climber of the Tour or 'King of the Mountains'. Points are awarded at the top of each hill or mountain, which are rated from fourth to first category depending on their difficulty. Some exceptionally tough climbs, such as l'Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux, are rated "hors categorie" (out of category).

The polka dot design was chosen as it was the same as one of the jersey's sponsors. The record winner of the King of the Mountains jersey is Frenchman Richard Virenque, who earned it seven times.

Q: Why do riders often finish in the same time?

A: Because only seconds are taken into account in the overall standings and not fractions of seconds. It is the convention in road cycling that all the riders included in the same group are given the same time on the finish line regardless of whether they are at the front or the back.

Another rule, applying only to flat stages, states that a rider who crashes in the last three kilometres will be awarded the same time as the group he was in before crashing.

Q: Cycling is an individual sport so why are there teams?

A: The Tour is raced by 20 teams of nine riders. Each team usually includes a leader - the man with the best chance for the final classification - sprinters, climbers and every type of rider who can help the team to win a stage, take a jersey and bring home prize money.

When some 200 competitors are cycling in a bunch at around 50 kph, the riders at the front waste much more energy than the ones immediately behind, who are sheltered from the headwind.

This is why team mates are often seen riding ahead of their leader - they are protecting him from the wind.

Team mates often act for their leaders in other ways, passing on one of their wheels if he punctures or picking up bottles and bags at the feeding zone.

Q: What is a "bordure"?

A: Also called an echelon, it is one of the nightmares of the peloton. When the wind is strong and blowing sideways, it can split the riders into little groups which are no longer sheltered inside the main bunch. They lose contact, find themselves on the most exposed side of the road and can lose considerable time. It happened to Alberto Contador in 2010 in a stage finish in La Grande Motte.

Q: What is the "omnibus?"

A: Also called the "gruppetto" (Italian for small group), it is the group formed by poor climbers in the mountain stages to help each other make it to the finish line at a reasonable pace, but inside the time limits.

Q: How do riders pee?

A: Spending some five hours on the bike, riders sometimes have to urinate during a stage. If the race is raging at full speed, riders do so on their bikes but most of the time they stop early in the stage when the pace is leisurely.

It is an unwritten rule of the peloton that you do not attack when a rider or a group has stopped to urinate.

Q: What is a domestique?

A: A domestique, or "gregario" is a rider who is not allowed any personal ambition on the race. He is picked for his ability to set the pace, suffer to the limit and drop out when his task is done. He is also expected to slide to the back of the bunch to fetch bottles, give his bike to his leader if necessary. Some riders, like Alberto Contador, have long-time, dedicated domestiques (or gregari).

Q: Where can I watch this year’s Tour de France?

A: SuperSport will bring you all the action from France, daily and LIVE on TV or to stream via DSTV . Check the TV Guide for details.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

The voices of the cycling commentators on Eurosport are beamed into our homes. Every single bike race we watch has some commentator giving their spin on the action. Eurosport has a select core of lead commentators who find themselves describing the action we see. They’re always paired with an ex-pro to provide the colour commentary, with insights about the racing, learned through their time in the pro ranks.

Table of Contents

Each commentator has their own style and you only have to listen for a few seconds to work out who they are. Everyone knows that Rob Hatch is the guy who pronounces each foreign word ultra-correctly and that Carlton Kirby will be the one telling the dad jokes. With a couple of exceptions, almost everyone on this list will be Tour de France commentators 2022.

Eurosport & GCN Commentators

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Probably now the highest-profile commentator on Eurosport, the only criticism Rob seems to get is due to his perfect pronunciation of all words in all languages. It makes sense when you find out that he was a languages graduate – Rob was in fact in his 4th year of Uni at Bangor when I started my 1st year there (also in the languages department). Hatch is often on the biggest races and usually covers the race finishes too.

Carlton Kirby Eurosport Commentator

Carlton Kirby

Kirby is the most marmite commentator there is. He inspires such devotion that he has his own fan club, yet also is on the receiving end of a petition to get him sacked. For me, Carlton is the perfect commentator for the ‘early shift’ on long, flat grand tour stages. With nothing doing, Carlton Kirby still finds plenty to talk about and discuss, with the dad jokes aplenty too.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Declan Quigley

You used to hear Declan Quigley covering the Giro d’Italia but now seems to find himself part of the B-tier. He’ll often be heard covering non-WorldTour classics and stage races with his distinctive Irish accent. He’s been heard less and less on Eurosport and GCN recently as he’s been on the world feed coverage for the Flanders Classics in 2021.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

A recent addition to the Eurosport and GCN team in 2021 and the only female lead commentator (even if the name catches plenty out on Twitter). She’s often heard covering non-WorldTour classics most often where she can use her native Dutch to pronounce riders and place names perfectly.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Marty McCrossan

The lead commentator for cyclocross and women’s cycling on Eurosport. It’s rare to watch either without hearing Marty’s voice in recent years. He’ll usually be heard paired up with Dani Rowe for women’s cycling and Jeremy Powers for the cyclocross. After a brief rest in January 2022, McCrossan has been back behind the mic once again.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

A former rider who has stepped up to lead commentary after initially being a colour commentator. With the joining up of GCN and Eurosport, he’s now regularly seen across all coverage. From talking about spring classics to grand tours, he’ll also be seen in the studio after races. Talking about the day’s events and doing analysis with the touchscreen TV.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Matt Stephens

The first former rider to jump into lead commentary from GCN when it was just a humble Youtube channel! He was initially mixing his GCN duties with the odd spell of commentary but soon changed the balance towards commentary. As his profile grew, he began compering cycling events like the 6 Day track racing and is regularly used by Zwift for their online commentary race events too.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Viewers have heard more and more from Jez Cox over the last year. The first race I remember hearing him was during the Vuelta CV Feminas at the start of 2021 but he’s now a regular across the board on cyclocross and stage races like the Saudi Tour at the start of the 2022 season.

Europsport & GCN Colour Commentators

sky tour de france commentators 2023

The distinctive Irish voice on Eurosport. Sean Kelly is a great of the sport of cycling – a 9-time monument winner, 4-time Tour de France green jersey winner and winner of the Vuelta a Espana in 1988. Mr Paris-Nice won that race 7 years in a row during the 1980s. Sean Kelly is almost synonymous with the coverage of major races on Eurosport and GCN.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Magnus Backstedt

Most famous for winning the 2004 edition of Paris Roubaix, Magnus Backstedt had a long pro career. He won a stage in the Tour de France in 1998 for GAN and after retirement, ran development teams in his adopted country – the UK. His daughters, Zoe and Elynor are currently emerging talents in women’s cycling. Zoe, in particular, became a double junior world champion in the last year. Maggy will often be heard on lower-level Belgian classics although not exclusively.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Brian Smith

Smith was twice a winner of the National Road Championships, in 1991 and 1994, as a rider before becoming a directeur sportif. He helped develop the Endura, NetApp (became Bora-Hansgrohe) and MTN-Qhubeka teams in their early days before becoming a staple on Eurosport and GCN.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

An Olympic, World and European champion on the track, Dani Rowe can now be heard covering women’s cycling on Eurosport. She retired from racing after 2018, a season where she finished 3rd in the Women’s Tour. She brings insider knowledge of the women’s peloton to the race commentary.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Adam Blythe

Another former National Road champion, in 2016, Blythe’s relaxed style has seen him move from the studio to behind the mic. He initially started combining riding with Eurosport work in his final season in 2019. He’s now a regular behind the mic and on the couch during The Breakaway – often with some flamboyant shirts. In his racing days, Blythe was a consistent lower-level classics racer and sometime sprinter.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Jeremy Powers

Powers can be heard exclusively during cyclocross races, usually paired up with Marty McCrossan. The American former pro rider won 4 national titles in cyclocross and was a top-10 ranked rider. He also was known to race on the road during US races. He was the commentator on the track using the 2022 Cyclocross Worlds held in Fayetteville, Arkansas this year.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Bigham helped to give deeper insights into the world of aerodynamics during the opening time trial of the 2021 Giro d’Italia and has been back during other major time trials too. A former F1 aerodynamicist, Bigham has turned his attentions to cycling and helped his track team beat national teams. After becoming a consultant for high-profile teams like Canyon SRAM and the Danish national track team, Bigham moved to Ineos Grenadiers for 2022.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Hannah Walker

A former national track champion, Hannah Walker spent years on the road racing as well. She retired from racing in 2018 whilst at WNT and transitioned to a Marketing/PR role for the team. She initially was heard commentating on women’s cycling races but has also been seen in the studio during coverage of 2021’s Giro d’Italia and a lot more since. For non-British based viewers she’s been on the world feed for Grand Tours.

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Dani Christmas

A long-time member of the women’s peloton, Dani Christmas retired from racing at the end of the 2021 season and moved into the commentary booth. You could hear her a few times during 2021 already but Christmas has been heard more often in 2022 so far. Often paired with Marty McCrossan, you’re most likely to hear Dani Christmas covering women’s racing.

Robbie Mcewen Commentator

Robbie McEwen

A new signing for Eurosport and GCN is the Aussie Robbie McEwen . He’s a familiar voice to anyone who stayed up late to watch racing in Australia, hosting with Matt Keenan and Bridie O’Donnell. Australian broadcaster SBS unceremoniously let him go at the end of the 2022 racing and so it’s no surprise to hear him over in Europe given he had such a high reputation. The former sprinter has an eye for racing detail and analysis.

Eurosport & GCN Presenters

sky tour de france commentators 2023

Orla Chennaoui

Usually, in the studio leading The Breakaway pre and post-race segments, she leads and guides the other presenters to discuss the stage or race of the day. She’s a regular member of the Cycling Podcast and has been covering cycling for a long time before joining the Eurosport and GCN team.

Live from the Tour de France 2023: The technical set-up behind the Grande Boucle

By Alice Boivineau, Contributor Tuesday, August 8, 2023 - 08:27 Print This Story

The 2023 Tour de France was marked by the Pogacar/Vingegaard duel for the yellow jersey. EMG’s RF motorcycles were closest to the cyclists Credit: ASO/Charly Lopez

As well as being a major event in the international sporting calendar, the Tour de France also represents a significant broadcasting achievement with the host broadcasters required to capture action across all 3,404 km of the course for television viewers in nearly 190 countries around the world.

“It’s truly a fantastic team effort,” summarises Guillaume Kleszcz, head of productions and broadcast services at Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organiser and producer of the Tour de France.

He’s not referring to the effort put in by Jonas Vingegaard’s teammates to win the yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysées, but rather the collective professionalism that reigns within the TV compound to provide five and a half hours of live coverage to viewers worldwide every day. Under the guidance of France Télévisions, the host broadcaster, several hundred individuals work to solve numerous technical and logistical challenges.

France Télévisions is responsible for capturing the Tour de France for the world feed while also maintaining its domestic signal. The public service channel employed its new internal technical resources through its subsidiary, La Fabrique for the event. Two new outside broadcast units travel the roads of France throughout the three-week event. The first one, known as the ‘Toulouse’ van, is used for the world feed production which is directed by Anthony Forestier. The second, called the ‘Lyon’ van, hosts the Nodal and France Télévisions’ domestic broadcasts.

“A real challenge to start the Tour with new people”

Déborah Larrieu, production director for France Télévisions and team leader for the channel’s coverage of the Tour de France, highlights the difficulty of introducing the new outside broadcast vans to the Tour: “Two new vans, two new teams. We had to brief everyone. Fortunately, since these are internal resources, the teams could communicate. But it was a real challenge to start the Tour with new people.” In total, nearly 200 individuals – technical and editorial staff – work every day on the Tour for the public channel.

Around 20 cameras are deployed for each stage: one at the start to capture the atmosphere and cyclists at the line, five on motorcycles, two on helicopters, four cameras positioned before the finish line, and seven to eight cameras for the finishes. Since Tour stages often exceed 100km, the majority of cameras are connected using radio frequency (RF) technology.

When it comes to RF technology, it’s EMG that provides the footage from the heart of the race. The European provider, which has consolidated its RF activities under the brand EMG Connectivity, moves over 100 people to each stage. Three RF reception vans are deployed along the route of each stage: the RFI 5, 6 and 7 vans. The HFR 42 semi-trailer hosts the coordination and reception of all RF signals at the finish line. It’s connected via fibre to France Télévisions’ production van.

RF technology

EMG Connectivity deploys 14 RF motorcycles, including six for capturing images, seven for commentators, and one for safety. Three of the image-capturing motorcycles are equipped with loop cameras to provide slow-motion shots. The commentator motorcycles accommodate journalists from France Télévisions as well as international broadcasters such as NBC, VRT, NOS, RMC and Discovery. The bikes – BMW R1250RT and R1250GS’ – are transported each evening by two dedicated semi-trailers. Bruno Gallais, managing director of EMG Connectivity, states: “We’re not using electric models yet. There’s an autonomy issue, especially for stages exceeding 200km.”

One of EMG’s two helicopters flies over the peloton for aerial shots Credit: ASO/Charly Lopez

In the air, two twin-engine helicopters capture footage. Each helicopter is equipped with two gyro-stabilised cameras. A third helicopter acts as a relay to ensure RF connectivity with the plane. Another helicopter is on standby if needed. Two Beechcraft 200 aircraft serve as the RF relay between the motorcycles, helicopters and RF reception vans. They fly constantly above the cyclists. Since all footage goes through the relay plane, a second plane is necessary to avoid any signal disruption.

“Sport takes precedence over technology”

The outside broadcast vans are stationed at the finish line. For the international broadcast signal alone, four vans are connected by a fibre loop system: the two France Télévisions vans, EMG Connectivity’s HFR 42 van, and the Nova 104, which hosts graphics provider Boost Graphics. However, location constraints can sometimes be challenging in areas not suitable for managing a technical area of 7,000 to 8,000sqm with all the vehicles. Kleszcz emphasises: “Sport takes precedence over technology.” Therefore, altering the Tour de France route due to a parking issue is out of the question.

The technical arrival zones cover an area of 7,000- 8,000sqm. Here, the arrival in Laruns Credit: Alexis Chaillous/France TV

Kleszcz is pleased to have “reached a new level this year” by creating nine separate technical zones. This means the TV compound hosting the outside broadcast vans is not directly located at the finish line and can be up to 17km away, separating the production van and the cameras at the finish line, as was the case on the Cauterets stage in the Pyrenees. Several solutions were found to enable this, from using fibre provided by Orange to the special deployment of a smaller production van solely for the finish line.

Going further, into the heart of the peloton

Technical challenges remain, however. This is the case, for example, with the miniaturisation of RF cameras. Placed on bicycles, they would offer a fresh perspective from within the peloton. Kleszcz expresses the hope that “if tomorrow we have cameras weighing less than 100g that can operate for a few hours using RF, it could also enhance the race’s storytelling”. Since 4G tests were inconclusive and RF systems are currently too heavy, 5G might be a potential solution.

In the meantime, even without 5G, the Tour de France continues to be popular with viewers. Nearly 150 million viewers in Europe, including 42 million in France, watched the Tour de France 2023, setting a new record.

On 23 July, the day of arrival on the Champs-Elysées, France Télévisions and ASO renewed their partnership agreement until 2030.

Tour de France 2023: Les contours du parcours dévoilé ce jeudi

T. Pogacar, J. Vingegaard, W. Van Aert

T. Pogacar, J. Vingegaard, W. Van Aert - Iconsport
