Sky Trek Monteverde Costa Rica - Canopy Tour

Sky Trek Monteverde Costa Rica - Canopy Tour

Ride Sky Tram up and Sky Trek Zip Line Down

What sets this monteverde zip line tour apart.

Sky Trek is similar in some ways to other canopy tours in Costa Rica, but does have some significant differences. In general, this zip line tour is much larger than other canopy tours; it has more zip lines and platforms, longer trails, and a series of suspension bridges you can walk across. All of this variety makes this Monteverde, Costa Rica zip line tour more of a playground in the sky. Adding to the fun? The reassurance that the construction here is of the highest quality, utilizing secure materials to ensure that you do not slip, trip, or fall.

A woman in an orange top and green earrings ponders zip lines

Who is this activity for?

The Sky Trek zip line does not require any kind of particular athletic ability. You only need to be able to sit down, remain calm, and focus your attention on the zip line you’re about to travel down — guides and gravity do the rest.

If this is your first adventure vacation, don’t worry; we have " Answers To All Of Your Questions About Adventure Tours In Costa Rica ."

An extra benefit of this tour is the ride you will be able to take in the Sky Tram . Beginning in the main facilities at a lower elevation, you will mount the tram and enjoy a safe and scenic ride up the mountain. In total, the ride takes about 20 minutes and offers astounding views of the surrounding rainforest. Once at the top, you’ll mount a series of steps and meet with your guides.

The hand of a guide holds the zip line while a little boy smiles at the camera

Is this activity safe?

Before you go flying down the zip lines, your guides will teach you the proper techniques, including how to hold onto the cable and how to position your body. They will make sure that your gear is properly adjusted and help you launch off from each platform. Unlike other zip lines in Costa Rica, you don’t need to worry about braking at the end of this one. Your guides will utilize a pulley system to slowly decrease your speed as you approach the next platform.

Since your guides take care of starting and stopping you along each cable, you can relax and enjoy the ride. You are free to change your group order at any time during the tour, making it easy to go ahead or drop behind the rest of your party. This allows you the time and space to take photos and videos, or just catch your breath, and appreciate the beauty of Costa Rica’s flora and fauna from amazing heights.

I booked the 3 in 1 tour as kind of an afterthought to fill the afternoon since we had a cloud forest tour in the morning. I'm so glad I did. Our guide was Julio and he wasn't good, he was great. I'm not too easily impressed, but the young man nailed it. Was funny, informative, engaging and all around excellent. Imparted a ton of information and the time flew by. We learned a lot about the coffee, chocolate & sugar cane processes and were able to get hands on and taste several things. To my utter amazement, this was my favorite activity in Monte Verde. So happy I came here… You really need a guide to spot the sloths, frogs, lizards, birds. If you’re expecting to be very close to the sloths, go to a zoo or a farm, this is an experience of seeing happy sloths in their natural habitat. We saw 3 sloths that were kind of balled up and then one that was moving a lot up the tree and looking at us! You can bring binoculars or just use the scope that the tour guide sets up. Our guide was amazing and knowledgeable about all of the wildlife. Also great with our 2 year old and 5 year old. We were in a group of 11 people and our guide kept it exciting the whole time, for everyone. Don’t skip the coffee wine and “whisky” at the end- delicious. • moniquecur 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Best Activities in Costa Rica is not to be trusted! First, the reason we booked this tour is because we wanted the Dbl yellow ATV scooter as shown on their picture. Unfortunately, this turned out to be false and a nightmare. We were robbed! On August 21, we made the ATV tour reservation online with Best Activities Costa Rica and paid with CC. On the day of the tour on September 5th, we were told by this "Pura Vida Gentleman" Alonso, that they could not find our reservation. We showed them our reservation confirmation and payment confirmation. Powered by Peek Payment ID: PMT-QE7WXZG Transaction ID: TXN-7739BKY Order ID: O-R5RAR85 After 10 minutes, with their "Pura Vida Charm", Alonso told me not to worry because they found the reservation through some company that do oversee their online payments and that they were having issues with that company. By then we were not paying attention, because we just came to do our ATV tour and enjoy our vacation. And were not interested in the companies internal issues with their Fintech company. Next, Alonso offered us, on the spot and because it was taking too long, a better price - $300.00 for the tour. And that what we paid initially $519.00 would be refunded back on our credit card within a couple of days. We took them on the offer and approved the refund. We received confirmation within minutes that the amount of 519.00 is on hold to be refunded. Alonso next went and charged the new discounted price offered. We went on our ATV tour, unfortunately the DBL turned out to be a single, and not the one shown on their picture. The seat was burning hot and extremely uncomfortable. After returning home last week we noticed that we did not receive a refund from Best Activities. We went back and forth with WhatsApp and emails for 1 week. one company blames the other for having to do the refund. We filed a claim against Best Activities Costa Rica, and we are waiting for the claim with the credit card company. In the meantime, Do Not trust this tour operator and do not book your ATV tour with Best Activities in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. This is Not "Pura Vida"! Read more Written September 26, 2023

We went to the hanging bridges first, and had a great time seeing one howler monkey, a small bat, and lots of nature! The walk was wa out 2.5 miles. Bring a poncho! Then we did the waterfall, 500+ steps down. It was gorgeous! The steps were a work out back up! Finally we took a rainy hike up the volcano lava flow trail. Miguel is really passionate about volcanos and Costa Rica! He taught us a lot about the volcano and history of Costa Rica. And he’s a great photographer, too! Read more Written September 24, 2023

Sky Adventures in Monteverde: Ziplining, Aerial Tram and Hanging Bridges

December 30, 2016 By Sammi 26 Comments

When it comes to ziplining in Costa Rica, Monteverde is usually the destination that comes to mind as that is where the original canopy tour in the country started. Ziplining was invented by the workers who actually used the cables to deliver lunch! Nowadays, it’s an exciting activity for adventurers to flying through the forest or over the beach and is one of the essential experiences to have in Costa Rica.

Though there are many ziplining companies in Costa Rica, there is one in particular that is known for having one of the highest and longest, Sky Adventures. They offer various activities in both their Arenal and Monteverde parks such as ziplining, hanging bridges and an aerial tram. We had the opportunity to go on the Sky Trek, Sky Walk and Sky Tram in their Monteverde park.

If you’re thinking about doing an adventure/eco tour, check out our experience at Sky Adventures in Monteverde.

Sky Adventures in Monteverde

The Sky Adventures park is a little ways from the town Santa Elena so unless you have a car, you’ll need to book it through a tour company that provides transportation.

Prices and Times

The park is open 7 days a week. They have various tours available including combo packages and the ziplining, hanging bridges and tram combo tour is $99.

Sky Tram – Aerial Tram

To get to the start of the canopy tour, you need to take their aerial tram to the top. This aerial tram is awesome. You climb steadily to the top of the cloud forest and on a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean as you’re on the Continental Divide.

Unfortunately, both times we have gone on the tram in March and November were super cloudy, but you get a great view of the cloud forests.

Sky adventures in Monteverde - sky tram

The tram goes up 2600 feet (800 meters) and at the top, the first cable is waiting for you!

Sky Trek – Ziplining

This canopy tour has 8 cables and goes through the cloud forest. The longest cable is 2460 feet (750 meters), the highest cable is 328 feet (100 meters) and the tour lasts around 2 hours.

This zipline gives you stunning views of the cloud forest as you fly above the trees. Even though it was raining when we went, it was still super fun. I can imagine on a nice sunny day, it’s even more incredible!

Sky adventures in Monteverde - sky trek zipline

You end up back at the tour entrance when the zipline is over so we got out of our ziplining gear and got ready to hike the hanging bridges.

Sky Walk Hanging Bridges

Sky Walk has 6 bridges spanning a length of 1.5 miles. It’s a fairly flat trail and is partially accessible by wheel chair. We had a bilingual guide who pointed out various flora and fauna since it’s common to see birds, monkeys, sloths and snakes.

Sky adventures in Monteverde - sky walk

Depending on what time of year you are visiting, you have the chance to see some rare birds. Monteverde is home to many birds who only live up the cloud forests such as the Resplendant Quetzal and Emerald Toucanet.

Tips for Visiting Sky Adventures in Monteverde

  • For more tips, check our Monteverde guide .
  • Wear a jacket and long pants, even in the dry season months. Monteverde’s average temperature up in the cloud forests is 65 F so it’s chilly! In rainy season, you must wear a rain jacket or else you’ll get soaked.
  • For the walk, bring binoculars or a long lens if you like taking pictures. It’s a great place for birders.
  • You don’t have to do the activities in this order, they have different times for the canopy tour. We just did the zipline first when there was a break in the rain.
  • You don’t need hiking boots but closed toed shoes are a must. I actually wore my KEEN sandals since I didn’t have closed toed shoes and though my feet were a bit cold, my shoes dried quickly and I didn’t have to worry about wet socks.
  • You can use a GoPro during the ziplining, just make sure to bring the mount that connects the camera to the helmet.
  • They have lockers for backpacks and a small cafe and souvenir store.

We visited the Sky Adventures in Monteverde park during the Costa Rica Monkey Tours, Essentials and Coast to Coast.

Sky Trek isn’t actually the longest zipline in Monteverde, Selvatura Park has a 1 kilometer (3280 feet) zipline but both ziplines are really fun.

Skytrek Zip Line Canopy Tour Monteverde

Monteverde Tours Tripadvisor

Skytrek Monteverde Canopy Tour, Bridges and Tram

Sky Trek Canopy is not just a zipline tour, as included in the experience is a 10-minute open-air gondola ride (also called the Skytram or cable car). You'll ride on the tram to the observation area, which is located at one of the highest points of the mountain. From the observation area, on a clear day, there are amazing views of the Gulf of Nicoya, Arenal Volcano, and of course, the surrounding cloud forest. From here you'll zipline back to the base (little walking between cables), through the air on a system of cables that stretch across canyons, from one mountain to another, and through the trees in the cloud forest. There are 7 cables with lengths between 328 feet (100m) and 2460 feet (750m).

The Skytram and Skytrek have to be done as a combined tour (you cannot do just the ziplines, as the tram takes you up and the ziplines down!). Although, you can do the tram on its own. Or combine it with a guided hike on the Skywalk bridges. The tour is suitable for anyone over 8 years old with a sense of adventure. No experience is needed.

New Vertigo Drop! Drop down from a platform like Tarzan!

General Information

Together, the ziplines and the Skytram complete distance stretches of almost 3kms and the tour takes approximately 2.5 hours (plus transport time).

Before leaving the main building to start your tour, you will be fitted with all of the necessary safety equipment (harness, helmet, gloves); which the guides will take care to properly adjust. Afterward, the guides will deliver a safety speech with special attention to the braking system.

Due to the extreme length of some of the ziplines and the prevailing wind speed, the guides may have you ride tandem. This style utilizes the added weight of a second person to ensure that you reach the next platform.

In the event of lightning or winds exceeding 120 km/h (75mph), Sky Trek will cancel its tours for safety reasons; with lesser wind or rain only serving to add to the excitement, and speed, of the zipline tour.

ARBOREAL - Tree climbing

Ever wanted to learn how to climb a tree?  The Arboreal tour will put your strength and courage to the test. There is a total of 4 trees, with heights that range from 10m (33ft)  to 20m (66ft) high. Each one has a different level of difficulty,  offering a variety of climbing challenges.  Safety is a priority and all climbers are given safety talks and equipped with a belay system, just like rock climbing but up a tree! The trees have handholds specifically designed for this activity and cause no damage to the trees.  Once you reach the top of the tree, the automatic belay system will descend you softly and safely to the ground!

Minimum age: 5 years old

Minimum weight: 30lbs (14kg) • Maximum weight: 265lbs (120kg)

Shoes or sports sandals (with straps around the heel) required

Sky Walk (Hanging Bridges/Suspended Bridges)

The Sky Walk is a wonderful chance to take a relaxed hike high in the forest. For wildlife viewing the Sky Walk offers the best opportunities, as often the zip lines are too fast and intense for relaxed wildlife viewing. You can do the Skywalk without  the tram or zip lines, or as a combo with other tours. Self-guided tours take about 1.5 hours but it depends on how often you stop to enjoy the scenery or take photos! There are 6 hanging bridges that cover about 1.5 miles (2.5km).

You can also book the Sky Walk with a nature guide. The guided tour is about 2 hours.

Everywhere we turn nowadays, it seems someone new is claiming to be a Costa Rica expert. Inside offices, travel agents and advisors “sell” the country without ever having stepped on Costa Rican soil. Outside, countless social media “influencers” fly in, make snap judgments, fly out, and taut their one-off experiences as the best. No wonder it’s so difficult for potential Costa Rica travelers like yourself to find trustworthy information and time-honored Costa Rica trip-planning advice! Thank goodness you found your way here. We’ve got what you need and deserve: help that’s based on firsthand knowledge, has been collected across a variety of experiences, and has been summarized as part of comparative analyses.

With respect to the Treetopia Park (formerly known as Sky Adventures Monteverde ), we’ve visited this park more times than we can remember. Monteverde is Ricky’s favorite destination in his homeland of Costa Rica, so we’ve found ourselves in the park on many personal vacations. We’ve also found our way to the park on business trips to perform site inspections as part of our corporate operations via our business, Pura Vida! eh? Inc. , and, because we’ve always enjoyed our time at the park, on three separate occasions it hosted our family reunions. Simply put, the park is a place we adore and never tire of visiting. Below are a few photos of our visits to the Treetopia Park over the years.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

If you keep coming across information about Sky Adventures online whenever you search for the Treetopia Park, or if you want to visit Sky Adventures Monteverde but keep getting forwarded to the Treetopia Park instead, rest assured, in either case, you’re where you’re supposed to be. Treetopia Park is the new name of the Sky Adventures Monteverde Park . Below is a brief summary of important park-related changes that have come into effect in recent years.

Until the end of 2022, Sky Adventures operated an adventure park in the La Fortuna region of Costa Rica, which was known as Sky Adventures Arenal , and an adventure park in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica, which was known as Sky Adventures Monteverde . Reservations for both parks were processed by the same team and the two parks shared a website. (The parks were governed by three siblings of the same Costa Rican family.) At the start of 2023, however, the two parks officially separated, and tour operations, including reservations and website management, were handled separately by each park. (A brother-and-sister team stayed with the park in Arenal while another brother took charge of the park in Monteverde.) Later in 2023, Sky Adventures Monteverde announced that their park, which had been managed by a group known as Grupo 415 since the split at the start of the year, would adopt a new name: the Treetopia Park . ( Grupo 415 is comprised of the kin of the brother who took charge of the park in Monteverde). Despite all of the changes, the majority of the Treetopia Park’s tour offerings would remain the same, except that the “Sky Tram” aerial tram would be renamed the “Tree Tram” aerial tram. (Note that at the La Fortuna site, the aerial tram continues to use the term “Sky Tram.”). It would take approximately six months for all of the Monteverde adventure park’s new “Treetopia Park” signage to replace the old “Sky Adventures” signage.

To date, the adventure park in Monteverde is known publicly as the Treetopia Park and it’s managed by Grupo 415 . In the La Fortuna region of Costa Rica, the brother-and-sister team manage the adventure park privately under the name Grupo Valverde but run it publicly under the name Sky Adventures . The park continues to operate under the name Sky Adventures Arenal . Both parks remain in the hands of members of the same Costa Rican family, but for legal and operational purposes, the parks are now unique corporate entities.

The Treetopia Park is best known for its original three tours and activities, which are often referred to as the classics :

  • The Tree Tram aerial tram ride , which is a slow-moving, gondola-resembling, cableway ride. A tour guide is required, and automatically provided, by the Treetopia Park with a reservation for this activity. A reservation is required to ride the Tree Tram .
  • The Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , which entails gliding across multiple zip-line cables situated above the cloud forest treetops. A tour guide is required, and is automatically provided, by the Treetopia Park with a reservation for this activity. A reservation is required to participate in the Sky Trek canopy tour.
  • The Sky Walk hanging bridges, which are a combination of hanging bridges (suspended high above the forest floor) and nature trails (along on the forest floor) that explore Monteverde’s cloud forest ecosystem. A tour guide is not required to explore the Sky Walk hanging bridges on your own. However, a tour guide can be provided by the Treetopia Park if you’d like to have one. A reservation is required to explore the Sky Walk hanging bridges , regardless of whether you want to explore the bridges with or without a tour guide

Please see the Tree Tram aerial tram ride , Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , and Sky Walk hanging bridges sections below for more information about each experience.

In addition to the classics, the Treetopia Park is currently putting the finishing touches on an all-new tree-climbing experience (known as the Arboreal Tour ) that has obstacle course components and a zip-line cable that you ride on a bike.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Tree Tram Aerial Tram Ride

Sky Adventures Monteverde Park

Unlike the scenery you’ll see at Sky Adventures Arenal , which includes views of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal , the view you’ll get while riding the Tree Tram at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde is one of endless cloud forest canopy. Tree Tram rides are a great way to view Costa Rica’s lush landscape from above, and Monteverde promises beautiful scenes that are bursting with vibrant, varied shades of green.

At the Treetopia Park , you can ride the Tree Tram on its own or in combination with the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour . On its own, you’ll ride the tram up to the top of the cloud forest and down again, ending where you departed at the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center. As part of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , after riding the tram up to the top of the cloud forest, you’ll zip-line down a series of cables on your return to the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center.

A one-way Tree Tram ride at the Treetopia Park lasts approximately 10 minutes , when counting from the moment the tram departs from the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center until it arrives at a platform at the top of the cloud forest.

If you reserve the Tree Tram ride only (i.e., if you do not plan to participate in the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour ), you’ll ride the tram both ways (to the top of the cloud forest and back down again). Once you reach the top of the cloud forest, you’ll be given roughly 30 minutes to explore the platform and short nature trail there. During that time, you can take in beautiful views of the cloud forest, snap photos, scan the forest canopy for birds and wildlife, and/or enjoy a treat or refreshment at the on-site cafe. If you choose to explore the trail, it will introduce you to flora and fauna native to the area, including a variety of plants, flowers, insects, amphibians, and reptiles, most notably ferns, orchids, torch flowers, spiders, and lizards. You may also hear the bellowing cries of territorial howler monkeys that reside around Monteverde. Once you return to the Tree Tram, you’ll spend approximately 10 minutes riding it back to the operations center. This second ride completes the approximate one-hour Tree Tram aerial tram experience.

If you experience the Tree Tram as part of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , note that you’ll only ride the tram once (to the top of the cloud forest), not back down again. Once you disembark at the platform at the top of the cloud forest, you’ll immediately begin the zip-lining portion of the tour (you won’t hike the nature trail and/or visit the cafe), and you won’t return to (or ride) the tram again.

There is currently no minimum age limit or maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who are interested in riding the Tree Tram.

Tree Tram rides are family-friendly. What’s more, children (ages 0-5 years) are welcome to ride the Tree Tram in Monteverde for free with a paying adult.

The Tree Tram aerial tram compartments at the Treetopia Park are spacious and accessible to people with a variety of disabilities, including individuals who use walkers and/or wheelchairs. The platform at the top of the cloud forest, which boasts an incredible view of the cloud forest, is also wheelchair-accessible.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek Canopy Zip-lining Tour

Sky Adventures Monteverde Park

Unlike some canopy zip-lining tours in Costa Rica, which cut through forest, the Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour takes place above the forest canopy (i.e., above the treetops). More specifically, the tour zigzags over the top of the forest and provides a bird’s eye view of the treetops, clouds, and an endless sky.

Several canopy zip-lining tours are offered in the Monteverde region, but the Treetopia Park’s canopy zip-lining tour is the only one that utilizes a handlebar braking system . (Most other canopy tour operators use the traditional hand-braking system.) Although both braking methods are regarded as safe, the handlebar braking system requires you to jostle a set of metal handlebars back and forth to slow your speed. In contrast, the hand-braking system requires you to place gentle pressure on the zip-line using a thick leather glove to slow your speed , a process that some travelers find daunting. A demonstration of how to use the handlebar braking system is provided at the start of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour . The tour begins with one low-to-the-ground practice cable, so you can test your zip-lining technique before embarking on the full tour. If, after experiencing the practice zip-line cable, you don’t like the activity, opt out of experiencing the zip-lining tour at that time. (Note that you may not be entitled to a tour refund given the last-minute change.) There’s no turning back once you proceed beyond the practice cable.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour is also the only canopy zip-lining tour in the Monteverde area that automatically includes a complimentary aerial tram ride . (See above for more information about the tram experience.)

Lastly, only at the Treetopia Park will you find the Vertigo Drop , a thrilling free fall that’s an included—but entirely optional—component of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour . (Note that the Vertigo Drop is not an included component of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour run at the Sky Adventures Arenal Park ; if you want to experience it, you’ll need to reserve the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde.) Participation in the Vertigo Drop requires you to jump off a tall metal structure while the tour guide slows your free fall until you gently reach a crash pad on the forest floor. The Vertigo Drop is a rush, but if you’d rather not feel it, you can reach the forest floor by descending the staircase to the side of the metal structure.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

After giving zip-lining a go on the practice cable (see above for more information about that), the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour officially begins with a 10-minute Tree Tram aerial tram ride that will deliver you to a platform at the top of the cloud forest. From there, you’ll soar across nine additional zip-line cables. (The Sky Trek canopy zip-ling tour at the Treetopia Park has 10 cables in total, if you count the practice cable). Here’s how the various cables compare with one another according to their length, height, the average speed at which you’ll cross the cable, and the average amount of time that it takes to cross the cable:

Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour cable details for the Treetopia Park : Cable #1 (practice cable): 32 meters long / 15 meters high Cable #2: 400 meters long / 60 meters high / 44 kms per hour / 44 seconds Cable #3: 520 meters long / 60 meters high / 53 kms per hour / 45 seconds Cable #4: 420 meters long / 50 meters high / 35 kms per hour / 33 seconds Cable #5: 560 meters long / 38 meters high / 52 kms per hour / 38 seconds Cable #6: 320 meters long / 100 meters high / 54 kms per hour / 32 seconds Cable #7: 380 meters long / 70 meters high / 53 kms per hour / 32 seconds Cable #8: 420 meters long / 65 meters high / 64 kms per hour / 34 seconds Cable #9: 750 meters long / 60 meters high / 75 kms per hour / 41 seconds Cable #10: 70 meters long / 42 meters high / 42 kms per hour / 17 seconds Total zip-lining distance: 3,880 meters

It’s important to note that it isn’t possible to participate in the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour without experiencing the Tree Tram aerial tram ride . The Tree Tram aerial tram ride is a required component of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour because the tram delivers you to the zip-lining tour’s second cable. If you do not want to ride the tram, you should not reserve the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour.

The duration of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour varies from day to day due to group size, weather conditions, and other factors, but on average, the actual zip-lining portion of the tour takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete. The entire tour experience, including the collection of zip-lining equipment, the instructional briefing, the one-way Tree Tram aerial tram ride , and the zip-lining portion of the tour takes roughly 2-2.5 hours to complete . This estimate excludes any extra time required to travel between the Treetopia Park and downtown Santa Elena (an approximate 10-minute drive from the Treetopia Park) and/or area hotels before the tour begins and after the tour wraps up. It also excludes the buffer time of 15 minutes that you’re expected to arrive at the Treetopia Park prior to participating in any one of their tours.

Years ago, Sky Adventures (the operation that previously oversaw the park that’s now known as the Treetopia Park ) maintained that their minimum age limit for participation in the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour was 12 years old. Then, they swapped their minimum age limit to a minimum height limit (1.2 meters tall). In 2017, Sky Adventures announced that children as young as 5 years old would be allowed to participate because they obtained equipment that was suitable for children weighing 10-40 kilograms. Despite the park changing names, 5 years old remains the current minimum age limit for Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour participants.

The current maximum weight limit for participation in the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour is 300 lbs. Individuals who exceed the maximum weight limit will be evaluated by the Treetopia Park ‘s technical staff according to their height and physical condition to determine eligibility for tour participation.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges

best hanging bridges in Costa Rica

In stark contrast to the Treetopia Park ‘s Tree Tram aerial tram ride and Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , both of which invite participants to spy on the cloud forest from above, the park’s Sky Walk hanging bridges provide a unique opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s cloud forest from within.

More specifically, if you visit the Sky Walk hanging bridges , you’ll stroll through roughly 2.5-kilometers of dense, secondary forest amid much of the biodiversity that Costa Rica (and the Monteverde region in particular) is known for. Spotting and/or hearing fauna along the walk is common; during our visits, we regularly see monkeys playing in the trees and climbing on the cables that support the bridges. Although you’ll cover plenty of solid ground as you traverse the park’s nature trails , most impressive are the long, metal hanging bridges that are suspended high above the forest floor . You’ll be amazed by the majestic beauty of Monteverde’s deep and verdant cloud forest as you make your way across each bridge, completely immersing yourself in nature.

At the Treetopia Park , you can explore the Sky Walk hanging bridges on your own (i.e., without a tour guide), as a standalone guided tour (i.e., with a tour guide), or as part of a combo tour (i.e., with or without a tour guide, and in combination with one or more of the Treetopia Park ‘s other on-site activities). Combo tour options include coupling the hanging bridges experience with either the Tree Tram aerial tram ride or the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour . Note that because the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour automatically includes a one-way tram ride (see above for details), if you reserve a combo tour that joins the Sky Walk hanging bridges with the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , you’ll get the Tree Tram aerial tram ride too.

The start of the Sky Walk hanging bridges experience requires hikers to decide between the “Long Walk” or the “Short Walk.” Here’s what you should know about both routes before choosing either one.

The Long Walk vs. the Short Walk

The 2.5-kilometer long walk is the Treetopia Park ‘s complete hanging bridges circuit. It’s a circular trail that departs from the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center and loops around the back of the park before returning to the trailhead. In contrast, the short walk is only a portion (roughly half) of the long walk. It, too, is a circular trail that departs from the operations center. It forms a smaller loop within the larger loop that forms the long walk. The two trails (i.e., the long walk and the short walk) overlap in places. If you complete the long walk’s full course, you’ll complete the short walk as part of the journey.

The long walk covers the entirety of the park. It not only provides a longer walk, it also provides access to a part of the park that’s the least visited and is the most likely to provide wildlife-spotting opportunities. The long walk also provides a more difficult hike, not only because you’ll cover a greater distance than the distance traveled during the short walk, but because the long walk has more inclines and declines. In contrast, the short walk minimizes hike duration and difficulty. The short walk is your best option if your time is limited and/or you’d prefer to explore the park’s easiest course.

If you take the long walk, you’ll find that the Sky Walk hanging bridges at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde are comprised of six hanging bridges in total. Here’s how the various hanging bridges compare with one another according to bridge length and height:

Sky Walk hanging bridge details for the Treetopia Park Bridge #1: 66 meters long / 15 meters high Bridge #2: 122 meters long / 49 meters high Bridge #3: 114 meters long / 17 meters high Bridge #4: 125 meters long / 36 meters high Bridge #5: 236 meters long / 50 meters high Bridge #6: 48 meters long / 15 meters high Total hanging bridges distance: 711 meters

If you take the short walk, you’ll encounter 4 hanging bridges in total. Specifically, you’ll cross Bridge #3, Bridge #4, Bridge #5, and Bridge #6 detailed above.

It’s easy to miss the long walk’s 6th bridge. Here’s why and how you can avoid doing so.

Though the trail that’s trekked during the long walk forms a loop, a section of the trail splits into two paths at one point, leading hikers in different, albeit parallel, directions for several meters. Further up the trail, the two split paths reconnect, so regardless of which path you choose to follow, it will return you to the long walk’s loop. It’s important to know that each of the two paths have a hanging bridge of their own, which represent two of the Treetopia Park ‘s six hanging bridges (Bridge #5 and Bridge #6). Many travelers who complete the long walk’s full loop cross only five hanging bridges in total because they explore only one of the two paths encountered when the trail splits (i.e., they cross either Bridge #5 or Bridge #6, not both).

In order to cross all six hanging bridges in the park, first you’ll need to choose the long walk, not the short walk. When you encounter the fork in the trail after you cross Bridge #4, choose one of the two paths that you’re presented with and proceed to cross that path’s hanging bridge (the path to the left leads to Bridge #5 and the path to the right leads to Bridge #6; both paths eventually lead back to the trailhead). Then, backtrack along the same path, retracing your steps over the hanging bridge you crossed moments before, and return to the fork in the road. From there, take the other path, cross over its hanging bridge, and continue on your way.

A common question we receive about the Sky Walk hanging bridges (and hanging bridges is general, regardless of where they’re located in Costa Rica) is whether the bridges move and/or sway when people cross them. The quick answer to this questions is: “Yes, the Sky Walk hanging bridges move when you walk across them.” The more elaborate answer to the question is: “Yes, the Sky Walk hanging bridges move slightly when you walk across them, but they don’t sway greatly from side to side as you may envision a rope bridge doing. What you’re most likely to feel when you walk across a hanging bridge is a teetering beneath your feet as the bridge’s metal floor panels adjust to your footsteps.”

To best minimize movement as you cross a hanging bridge, walk in the middle of the bridge to avoid shifting your weight to either side. Hold onto both sides of the bridge with your hands for support (again, to avoid shifting your weight to one side if you happen to lose your balance when you walk), and walk slowly. The faster you walk, the more the metal floor panels will teeter from side to side. If possible, don’t cross a hanging bridge when other people are on it. The steps of hikers at the opposite end of the bridge can cause the entire bridge to move, so sometimes waiting until they’ve fully crossed the bridge can help your journey feel less wobbly.

There is currently no minimum age limit or maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who are interested in exploring the Sky Walk hanging bridges at the Treetopia Park.

Exploring the Sky Walk hanging bridges is a family-friendly activity. If you’ll be traveling with kids, it’s important to know that children (ages 0-5 years) are welcome to explore the Sky Walk hanging bridges at the Treetopia Park for free with a paying adult.

Unfortunately, given the rugged terrain of the nature trails, the Sky Walk hanging bridges at the Treetopia Park are not wheelchair-accessible.

The Treetopia Park’s Other Tours And Attractions

The treetopia park ‘s arboreal tour.

Less popular than the Treetopia Park ‘s tram, canopy zip-lining tour, and hanging bridges is its Arboreal Tour . Previously, the Arboreal Tour was only a tree-climbing tour, but construction is underway to transform the activity into a mash-up of tree-climbing, obstacle course, and bike zip-line experiences. When complete, the Arboreal Tour will be available to reserve on its own or as part of a combo tour that includes one or more of the Treetopia Park ‘s classic activities.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Operations Center (parking, lockers, and a souvenir shop)

The operations center at the Treetopia Park is a modern facility complete with a comfortable lobby, a well-stocked souvenir store, and lockers that are free to use by tour participants. There’s also a large parking lot with plenty of space for rental cars. (Parking is free.)

The Treetopia Park ‘s restaurant

The only place to eat at the Treetopia Park is the Hard Frog Cafe restaurant. Typical Costa Rican food is served. Most of the Treetopia Park ‘s tours have an option to add lunch at an extra charge , if you’d like to prearrange the meal with your tour.

sky trek monteverde address

As part of the Sky Trek canopy zip-lining tour , you’ll have an opportunity to purchase photos and/or videos of your tour experience upon tour completion. If you’d rather capture your own tour footage, you’re only permitted to do so using GoPro -style action cameras. GoPro cameras and accessories are available to rent, subject to availability, at the Treetopia Park for a fee.

If you won’t have access to a rental car and therefore won’t be able to drive yourself to/from the Treetopia Park , you can elect to add the park’s own round-trip transportation service (roughly $10.00 plus tax per person) to your tour reservation. Like reservations for tours, reservations for transportation services are required .

The drive from the center of Santa Elena (Monteverde’s downtown core) to the Treetopia Park takes approximately 10 minutes. Half of the drive is conducted on paved roads (roads #606 and #619) and the other half is conducted on a slightly rougher, unnamed road where stones and potholes are common. (The unnamed road leads to the entrance of the Treetopia Park , and beyond it, the entrances to the Selvatura Park and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Biological Reserve ). Although having a 4×4 vehicle is an advantage, it is not required to reach the Treetopia Park from within the Santa Elena/Monteverde region.

CelebWatch: Shatner Gets “Weird” + Pine Goes To “Moscow” + Nimoy Wraps “Fringe” + Quinto On The “Margin”

| April 12, 2010 | By: Anthony Pascale 19 comments so far

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!

Hvorostovsky in Moscow

With Guest star Sondra Radvanovsky Constantine Orbelian, conductor Philharmonia of Russia

A Magical Match Made in Moscow. In June 2008, Dmitri Hvorostovsky invited Sondra Radvanovsky to be his guest star in the prestigious Moscow concert series ‘Hvorostovsky and Friends,’ with conductor Constantine Orbelian and the Philharmonia of Russia. This glamorous occasion, captured on film for Russian television, marked these artists’ first-ever musical collaboration – and proved to be a historic event that documented for posterity one of those all-too-rare instances of magical artistic alchemy between two great opera stars. Their electrifying performance was an instant sensation, and a potent preview of the two stars’ effusively acclaimed later appearances together in Il Trovatore at Covent Garden, The Met and The San Francisco Opera.

Delos recorded the live concert, to be released later as the critically-acclaimed CD, ‘Verdi Opera Scenes’. The Russian TV show, featuring their national baritone hero and his dazzling guest, was broadcast throughout the Russian Federation. Upon obtaining that film footage, Delos collaborated with California film editor Steve Scoville, who expertly synched the footage with Delos’s concert audio. The result, available for the first time on this DVD, takes the viewer/listener to Moscow’s Great Hall for the concert’s most unforgettable moments, with stunning ‘you are there’ sonic and visual impact. Bonus feature interview with Maestro Orbelian.
