Can Adults Sleep On RV Bunk Beds?

For the most part, adults can sleep on RV bunk beds, especially when they are double beds. Most doubles are about 74″ long, which is enough for someone 6′ 2″ tall to stretch completely out. Double bunks are also wide enough to move around without falling off the bunk.

Twins are a little more difficult, but it can still be done. Of course, a grown adult may be a little more uncomfortable in a twin bunk, depending on size, weight, and height. For those adults out there who can literally sleep anywhere, bunks are far from an issue.

Can I Pull a 7,000 lb Travel Trailer With Bunk Beds?

You can pull a 7,000 lbs. travel trailer with bunk beds with a full-size SUV or half-ton pickup truck. The examples we presented have a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds. This is different from an RV with a dry weight (a.k.a. Unloaded Vehicle Weight/UVW) of the same weight.

An RV with a 7,000 lbs. dry weight means that the coach weighs that much when it’s empty. When you fill it with fresh water, your camping gear, food, clothing, and passengers, the total Gross Vehicle Weight (filled-up weight) could be as high as 9,000 pounds or more.

The GVWR is the RV manufacturer’s rating (and various governing agencies) that tells everyone what the safest maximum weight the rig can hold (the keyword is “safe”). This article claims the Springdale Classic has a 7.7 cu refrigerator and a 14 ft awning. In all the searching on Camping World inventory I have yet to find a unit with this. I only see 3.3 frig and 10 ft awning.

My apologies, as I just reached out to Keystone and they confirmed that 3.3-cubic feet is the standard fridge size for the 2024 model year, down from the 7.7 cubic foot standard in the 2023 model year. The main difference between a bunk room travel trailer and a bunkhouse travel trailer is the disposition and privacy of this area with bunk beds in the travel trailer floor plan.  

Bunk room travel trailers have a private bedroom with bunk beds. Therefore, a solid door separates the bunk beds in a private bedroom from the rest of the travel trailer.

A bunk room travel trailer may include an entertainment center, a wardrobe and cabinets, a booth dinette, a sofa, and even a bathroom or a half-bath inside the bunk room. Although it should be a luxury bunk room travel trailer floor plan.

Usually, travel trailers with bunk rooms have bedrooms on opposite sides of the RV . So, for example, if the travel trailer floor plan has a rear bunk room, there is a front queen or king master bedroom.

Travel trailers with bunk rooms may have 2, 3, or even 4 bunk beds (called “ quad bunks travel trailers” ), or combine bunk beds with twin beds (no bunks).

On the other hand, if you pay close attention to the bunkhouse travel trailer floor plans you will see the bunk bed area is not separate from the rest of the camper by a solid door . It might be a fabric curtain giving some privacy to the bunkhouse, but there are not enclosed in a private bedroom.

Not very often you will see a travel trailer with a private mid-bunkhouse in the floor plan. It is more common on fifth wheels trailers and some destination campers. Mostly all the travel trailers with bunk rooms are located rear while master bedrooms are in the front of the RVs.

However, we have 2 floorplans to recommend to you. Let’s see.

The Hideout 38FKTS by Keystone RV offers a floor plan not common for a travel trailer. I would say you may find a layout like this one in a fifth wheel, but mid-bunks are not common features for trailers. The trim 38FKTS is a travel trailer with a mid bunk room , among other features to highlight on this floor plan.

Hideout 38FKTS is a travel trailer with a mid-bunk room under 10,000 lbs.  As you can see in the floor plan below, the 38FKTS has two entry doors. The front entry door connects the living room area with the fireplace with the front kitchen, pantry, and booth dinette. The theater seats or optional tri-fold sofa and the dinette are located in the longest slide-out of this RV.

If we move to the rear of this camper, and across the second entry door, as we mentioned before the 38FKTS  is a mid bunk room travel trailer and the second slide-out bunk bed is part of this bunkhouse room equipped with a desk, cabinets, and a wardrobe.

Down the hallway, next to the bunk room, there is a full dry bathroom with a radius shower.

Finally, at the back of this camper trailer under 40 feet , there is a second private bedroom with a queen size bed.
