No matter how often you travel, everyone wants to get the best rates on hotels and flights. Snaptravel claims to be able to help you find hotels at lower prices than other online travel sites. Does it really work?

We’ve tried it out, and can say that we were pleasantly surprised: it’ll actually get you deals that you can’t find on Expedia or Booking.com . While you previously had to go from website to website comparing deals, Snaptravel now does the work for you. Simply provide trip information and get your travel deal directly on their website or via message – it’s that easy.

We here at Wanderlog love finding other travel tools and trying them out. Our app is an all-in-one trip planner for planning vacation travel meant to replace Google Maps and Sheets, but we’re always looking for other cool travel sites to try out too.

Founded in 2016, Snaptravel is a virtual travel agency that connects travelers with the best hotel and flight deals. Snaptravel’s primary goal is to “make travel a simple and magical experience” by providing incredible travel deals at the lowest market rates through an easy-to-use platform. 

Snaptravel’s agents have access to the lowest rates that previously only travel agents with physical stores would have access to. Snaptravel uses AI agents and algorithms to find hotel and flight deals. Real agents are available to help with customer service questions and concerns. 

Conveniently, you don’t need to leave your home to benefit from Snaptravel’s amazing deals! The entire process is completed via snaptravel.com and through Facebook, Whatsapp, or text message. You don’t even need to download an app. 

Snaptravel was founded by entrepreneurs Hussein Fazel and Henry Shi and is owned by SnapCommerce . Today, Snaptravel has a user base of over ten million. 

The company has even gained investment from major names like NBA player Steph Curry and Expedia CEO Peter Kern. Snaptravel has also been featured by Bloomberg , LA Times , Forbes , and many more. 

How Much Does Snaptravel Cost?

Snaptravel is free to use no matter what type of trip you’re planning. There’s no added fee for using Snaptravel as opposed to other online travel agents or booking directly.

Only when you decide on a travel deal will you be required to pay for that flight and/or hotel offer. In fact, you’ll save money booking through Snaptravel instead of directly through an airline or hotel.

The one add-on option offered is purchasing access to the Snaptravel VIP program for $30 upfront for six months. After six months, the VIP program is $5 a month. The benefits of this plan include free upgrades and booking modifications, discounts on bookings, and a 24/7 concierge service.

You can pay for flights, hotels, and the VIP program on Snaptravel via Apple Pay, PayPal, or credit card. 

How Does Snaptravel Work? 

This Snaptravel Review will now look at how Snaptravel gets its low rates and how to book through Snaptravel. 

The company works with hotels and airlines in a “private 1:1 environment”, which allows them to get the best rates for each customer. Snaptravel’s efficient algorithm finds discounted hotel rates and flight fares that are not accessible on most travel websites.

If you want to book Snaptravel hotels, then follow these steps: 

• Input the city you want to visit, dates of the trip, and the number of guests. 
• Select how you want to be contacted: via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or SMS and provide contact details.  
• Receive a customized offer with three Snaptravel hotels deals for your requested trip with the best possible rates offered.

Snaptravel Flight Booking 

Really, Snaptravel’s unique parts mostly have to do with hotels. Its flight booking service works more like any other flight booking website, since airlines don’t really have special “private 1:1 rates”.

If you want to use the Snaptravel booking website for flights, follow these steps: 

• Choose round-trip, one-way, or multi-city. 
• Input departure and return airports, flight dates, passenger information, and flight class (economy, business, first-class, etc.) 
• Flights matching your criteria will be shown on snaptravel.com, and you can then select the flights with the best time and price for you and your preferred airline. 
• You’ll then add additional passenger information, including date of birth, gender, and contact information.
• Lastly add payment information. Once payment processes, you’ll get a confirmation email. 

What Are the Benefits of Snaptravel? 

The following are some of the major pluses of using Snaptravel over booking directly via an airline or hotel or booking through another online travel agency, like Expedia. 

Easy to Use 

Snaptravel is incredibly easy to use, and the company has an extremely user-friendly website. You simply input basic information about your trip and instantly get access to your deals. 

You can then book directly through Snaptravel and add upgrades. All of your trip info and confirmations are also stored by Snaptravel so everything relating to your trip is in one location. 

The Lowest Rates on Hotels and Flights 

Users of Snaptravel have access to some of the lowest flight and hotel rates around. Many Snaptravel reviewers say that when comparing rates with other travel websites and hotels or airlines directly, Snaptravel had the best rates consistently. On average, customers receive 30-50% lower rates when booking through Snaptravel. 

Customizable Deals 

Snaptravel finds rates specifically for you and your needs. Instead of offering one-size-fits-all deals, you can search for exactly the type of flight or hotel you need. Along with information like the dates of your trip, you can request room types, upgrades, and more to get a completely personalized deal. 

24/7 Customer Support 

Snaptravel customers have access to customer support 24 hours a day. Snaptravel uses a combination of bots and real agents to help answer questions and aid with concerns and complaints. You can easily contact customer support via Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, or SMS. You can also call the Snaptravel customer service number at 1-833-600-5830.  

Using Snaptravel won’t cost you anything. You only pay for the flights or hotel stays you want to book. If interested, you can upgrade to the VIP program for $5 a month, but this is not necessary to get deals and book your trip. 

Does Snaptravel Have Any Drawbacks? 

Snaptravel does have a few drawbacks, which this Snaptravel review will now address. 

Issues with Rewards Programs 

Some hotels will not provide you with membership rewards points if you book through Snaptravel. This doesn’t appear to be an issue with airline rewards points. 

Unable to Package Hotels and Flights 

You cannot book flights and accommodation together through a package deal as you can with other travel agent-style websites, like Expedia. If looking to book both hotels and flights via Snaptravel, you’ll have to do so separately. 

Booking Issues Can Occur 

It’s more likely that booking issues and errors can occur when not booking directly via a hotel or airline. Some negative Snaptravel reviewers highlight this, saying that they arrived at a hotel and did not have a booking despite having paid and received a booking confirmation from Snaptravel. Other reviewers say airlines canceled flights, and Snaptravel did not inform them. 

Customer Support Issues 

Some negative reviewers also say that getting in touch with a real person when needing customer support is a challenge. 

Is Snaptravel Legit?  

Many want answers to the questions, “Is Snaptravel legit?” and “Is Snaptravel trustworthy?” The answer to both is yes! Snaptravel has legitimately helped millions of users find incredible hotel and flight deals. 

The high level of customer satisfaction among Snaptravel users is seen in their online reviews. Snaptravel has 4.5/5 stars on Trustpilot, based on over 22,000 reviews. The company also has an A+ rating and 4.5/5 stars, based on over 2,000 reviews with the Better Business Bureau. 

Are Snaptravel Deals Refundable? 

Snaptravel hotel bookings and flight bookings may be refundable. While you can cancel some hotel stays and flights for a full refund, the majority of Snaptravel’s deals are non-refundable. You may be able to get Snaptravel credits to use on a future booking when canceling certain trips.

To check your Snaptravel refund policy, check your booking confirmation or type “my bookings” into the messaging thread. Also, note that you may incur fees if the hotel or airline changes or cancels your booking. 

Snaptravel currently has a Covid-19 cancellation policy and is more flexible about refunds. If your trip is non-refundable and you must cancel due to a Covid-19 related issue, contact the support team, and they will attempt to get you a full refund.

Is Snaptravel Worth It? 

This Snaptravel Review will now answer the most crucial question: “Is Snaptravel worth it?”

Due to its ease of use, incredibly low rates, and many satisfied customers, Snaptravel appears to be a company worth booking hotels and flights with. 

At a minimum, it’s worth getting some quotes from Snaptravel when planning a trip. If you find the best rate with Snaptravel and decide to book, it seems as though you’ll receive high-quality service and have access to support if needed.  

The many positive customer reviews left on review websites like Trustpilot help to prove that booking hotels and flights through Snaptravel is worth it. An average of 9% of reviews are negative, while the rest are positive.

If you like the idea of using a travel agent to ensure you’re getting the best hotel deal, but hate the idea of contacting one and waiting for their search to end, SnapTravel may be the site you’ve been waiting for. It’s a half-bot, half-human hotel booking service that can secure some of the lowest negotiated hotel deals around, and it sends them right to your Facebook Messenger inbox.

SnapTravel is an online search engine that sends hotel deals catered to your needs almost instantaneously. The secret to its speed is a bot, much like the ones that now send shipping details and boarding passes via Facebook Messenger . But the secret to SnapTravel ‘s ease is that it also uses actual people to guide the process and even to get you an upgrade.

How SnapTravel Works

SnapTravel does the hotel searching for you based on your travel dates and desired location, and sends you the three best deals. It also shows you just how much you’re saving compared to big-name search sites like Booking.com, and displays the hotel’s TripAdvisor rating if you view results on the site. ( Editor’s Note: TripAdvisor is SmarterTravel’s parent company, but is not affiliated with SnapTravel. )

How does SnapTravel secure deals? It apparently all comes down to the private messaging feature.

“Hotels sell unsold inventory to Priceline and Hotwire because these prices are too low to show publicly,” the SnapTravel website states . “SnapTravel lets you book these same great rates without having to guess the hotel’s name because your discounted price is not displayed publicly when you book over private 1-1 chat.”

After taking SnapTravel for a test drive and comparing prices elsewhere along the way, I can say with confidence that its users are finding some of the lowest hotel rates around, especially in cities. If you’re booking a hotel in a highly populated area, chances are SnapTravel will have a deal for you.

Using SnapTravel

To use SnapTravel , enter your dates and location in the site’s search tool, and choose a contact method: Facebook Messenger, SMS, or Slack . The best user experience is currently on Messenger, according to SnapTravel’s founder, Hussein Fazal .

Moments after entering your information, the results will come through, and you can add in special requests (like preferred hotels or rewards programs, necessary amenities, and your budget) directly through the chat window—or click “Filter Results” to refine your needs and view a map of the hotels. Start a new search or conversation with one of SnapTravel’s agents (who are available 24/7) in Messenger by sending “New Booking.” Here’s a demonstration:

Deals and Upgrades through SnapTravel

The prices are surprisingly low. I searched several destinations and found some of the best savings in large cities like London and New York. For example, the cheapest New York hotel SnapTravel gave me was less than half the price that it was being offered for on Kayak and on Hotels.com. The prices I found are below, including SnapTravel’s top three options (left) and their counterpart prices on Kayak (right).

London yielded similar results, with some of the cheapest central hotels costing $43 less than the nightly Booking.com price, which was being pushed as a 32 percent off “deal” (see prices below the SnapTravel map). Los Angeles hotels were all well over $100 cheaper on SnapTravel.

Even for smaller cities, SnapTravel had cheaper prices than the most popular booking sites. Galway, Ireland, hotels were on average $20 cheaper per night, and Boston hotels were up to $70 less per night in my tests. Those aren’t small savings, and the options are by no means budget hotels. Most of their ratings are above a four on TripAdvisor.

Unlike many sites, SnapTravel isn’t simply a bot that takes commands. “Our humans actually serve a good purpose beyond just trying to find you a hotel,” Fazal told me. An agent stays on top of your reservation after you’ve booked, not only confirming all your needs are met, but oftentimes getting you an upgrade. About 30 percent of the time an upgrade is secured, and 60 percent of bookings can at least get bumped to a higher floor. That means only about 10 percent of bookings don’t get something extra from using SnapTravel.

My Honest SnapTravel (Super) Review: Is SnapTravel Legit?

Sick and tired of paying hundreds for hotels and flights, I tried Super.com for my SnapTravel review–here’s what I found out.

Have you looked at hotel and flight prices recently? They’re INSANE!

And with so much travel to catch up on after the past few years, weddings to go to, and long-delayed plans finally coming up, my wallet is feeling the squeeze.

But with hotel rates and flight booking pricier than ever, I listened closely when I heard that you could get discount flight tickets and cheap hotels with online travel agents. 

SnapTravel (now rebranded as Super) is popular because you don’t have to pay for their services. 

Unlike some other online travel agents, with SnapTravel, you don’t immediately work with a person. 

Instead, SnapTravel uses AI chatbots that communicate with you over messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or regular text SMS. 

A real person is available if needed, but their chatbot is surprisingly good!

I tested SnapTravel for this review and compared their deals to actual prices. 

In this honest SnapTravel review, I’ll investigate whether the company is legit, share my experience using SnapTravel’s services, and answer all your questions about the website and app.

What is SnapTravel?

SnapTravel is an online booking website (and app!) that combines the benefits of a travel agent with the ease and free cost of online booking platforms.

SnapTravel is essentially an online travel agent that lets you plug in dates and a location to find hotel and flight deals (just like any other online booking website).

You can occasionally find great deals because, like a travel agent, SnapTravel has access to discounts on hotels and flights and can pass those discounts on to you.

SnapTravel doesn’t charge you for its services. And unlike many apps, you don’t have to download the SnapTravel app to use their product.

Instead, you enter information directly into their website like any other booking platform. You can also opt to chat with a bot over several messaging apps.

A Quick Look at SnapTravel as a Company

First off, SnapTravel went through a rebranding recently and now goes by Super , and hotel booking is now part of their Superbrand. 

Super Travel hasn’t quite taken off yet, so I’ll still call it SnapTravel for this article.

SnapTravel is a Canadian startup founded in 2016 by tech entrepreneurs Hussein Fazal and Henry Shi.

SnapTravel is a legit company with investors like Steph Curry (though I doubt he spends hours scouring the internet to save fifty bucks on a flight!).

It combines advanced chatbot technology with the business model of an online travel agent to find the best hotel and flight deals for customers.

Rather than charging people for these services, SnapTravel is free and relies on commissions from customers’ bookings.

Additionally, although I haven’t seen this in any chats with SnapTravel, they will sometimes send sponsored messages that partners might pay SnapTravel to advertise to its customers. 

Of course, SnapTravel mentions this as a positive– giving customers suggestions for where to stay or what to see.

SnapTravel Review: My Experience With Using SnapTravel

I researched SnapTravel hotel booking, SnapTravel flight booking, and SnapTravel customer service. Here’s my experience.

SnapTravel Hotel Booking

“Snaptravel Hotels” now goes by the name “SuperTravel.” They are booking hotels solely over Messenger. 

Now SnapTravel has added a more familiar way to show their deals. You can find SnapTravel hotel deals through a search system or by scrolling to the bottom.

I wasn’t able to start searching immediately, however. When I first hopped on to find a hotel, they wanted to ensure I wasn’t a robot. Okay, fine, I understand that. 

But SnapTravel did this in a strange way. I had to get a code sent to my phone. In doing so, they can now send marketing messages, which was a negative experience for me.

When you use SnapTravel , you’re not finding the best deals for a hotel through a search. Instead, you search to see what options are available, and then you can talk with their AI chat.

When searching for the best hotel deals in Mill Valley, I stumbled upon Travel Lodge. The first screen of this search showed a savings of $6 off in pink on top of the picture. 

As I proceeded to find the savings for three nights, it came back as $11. In the end, Snaptravel showed me a total savings of $17.85. 

But when comparing this deal with the hotel’s website, I saved closer to $9.88. This amount is still 3% in savings– which is good! 

When factoring in other reward programs (if you stick with one hotel company), the savings could be a wash. Still, these travel deals make SnapTravel legit!

SnapTravel Flight Booking

As I’m writing this, the entire SnapTravel website is currently under maintenance as they transition to their re-branded name. 

You might wonder where the flight deals are when you visit Super’s website. Until recently, to view the flights, you had to visit SnapTravel .  

In the short time since I tested SnapTravel, things have changed again. Now when you click that link, you’ll get a message that the third-party carrier they used to work with has ceased operations, and they don’t currently have a third-party carrier associated.

Regardless, my experience with their previous set-up was not positive. I was disappointed with my flight search for several reasons. 

First of all, their site is super slow! The last time I tried using it, it took over 30 seconds for the page to load. Maybe that’s why their site is under maintenance now. 

It doesn’t stop there, either. SnapTravel wasn’t really showing cheap rates– quite the opposite, in fact! I had to double-check to make sure they were correct.

I put my desired flight dates from LA to Omaha into SnapTravel, and they showed me a round-trip flight for $440. The same route on Google Flights was $237! How does that make any sense?

These flights were also during the week and six months in advance. I wanted to talk to the support team about these flight prices. It seems they currently only offer that for their hotel deals. But more on this later. 

Eventually, everything will be under the “Super” brand. Hopefully, all of this work is worth it, and they will have lower prices. 

When researching SnapTravel, I found negative reviews more frequently than I would have liked. 

Still, the SnapTravel reviews on the Better Business Bureau give them an A+ rating! 

It wasn’t all bad. SnapTravel did have some good flight features, like the ability to search for multi-city flights. 

However, given that many SnapTravel alternatives exist, they need to step up in this department or stick to hotels.

SnapTravel Customer Service

When you’re trying to find out if SnapTravel’s amazing deals are legit or not, you will run across some negative reviews. 

The complaints mostly had to do with reservations not going through, cancellations not working, etc. 

I suggest confirming the booking details with the airline and/or hotel to avoid dealing with this. 

This issue becomes an even bigger deal when customer service isn’t reliable. SnapTravel uses AI, which has become increasingly popular in recent months.  

SnapTravel’s chat can answer a lot of questions easily, it seems. I also asked their AI chat to look at flights for me. 

Surprisingly enough, it did this and even found cheaper flights than I saw when I tried to search on their website myself. 

When you click support, there will be multiple options you can choose.

Which option you’ll choose will depend on what type of question you have. They’ll then send you an article about it. 

I wanted to talk to an agent directly, so I simply clicked “talk to agent” in the chat box to do this. They’ll then prompt you to give more information about what you need. 

From here, things got tricky. I needed to talk to the support team about a plane ticket they deemed as “non-refundable.” Instead, they sent me to their old SnapTravel flights website to complete a form. 

Since they are a third-party site, it might be challenging to receive a full refund. Be sure to check out the SnapTravel refund policy before booking anything!

I also read about some of these issues before checking their online reviews. The SnapTravel reviews were correct; their customer service was sub-par, to say the least.

Supercash Bonus

SnapTravel offers its own unique credit card affiliated with MasterCard. This card is one of their best perks, and here’s why. 

The SuperCash card offers a 10% cashback on all purchases you make on SuperTravel. On top of this, you’ll also get 5% cashback on brands like Nike and Apple through SuperShop . 

Lastly, you’ll receive 2% cash back on all other purchases outside of SuperTravel. 

These deals are excellent and, at the bare minimum, would be a wash with other credit cards or reward programs.

Good Deals for Hotels

Since you can’t currently book flights (or, rather, they make it extremely difficult), you’ll find the best deals with SnapTravel hotels. 

Their deals on hotels do save you a good bit of money. It’s always worth a look using their user-friendly search system. 

I always want to ensure I have the best price for any accommodation I book. Given that, I’d consider adding SnapTravel as a top website for booking hotels.

Free to Use

At the end of the day, it’s hard to complain too much about a company that is completely free to use. 

Finding a SnapTravel Coupon or SnapTravel discount code to receive even better travel deals is possible. Just make sure to double-check your reservation after finding those deals!

You Can’t Stack Credit Card Points with SuperCash

This is where SuperCash isn’t an absolute must to use. I have fantastic travel credit cards that give me just as good (if not better) deals as what I can find on SuperCash. 

Knowing how to use these points from all the different credit cards can be confusing. That’s why SuperCash is a great tool because it’s easy to use! At the end of the day, it doesn’t hurt to have it.

Page to Book Flights is Slow

When I looked into flights a few months ago, the website was too slow. Because it was taking far too long to load the pages, I almost immediately went to look at the same route on Google Flights. 

This issue simply can’t happen in this day and age. I’m hoping they fix this aspect because they have the potential to offer an awesome service if they were to model it after their hotel booking interface.

How to Have the Best Experience Shopping on SnapTravel

I want you to learn from my experience shopping on SnapTravel. When booking a hotel, you’ll have the best results if you find a good deal on SnapTravel, and then check other sites. 

Make sure the price and availability match up with what you’re seeing on SnapTravel. There are deals out there on SnapTravel, but these normally come through the messenger.

As I stated previously, SnapTravel uses AI to help you find these deals. Send them a quick message in the messenger with your dates and destination, and they’ll send you these deals.

SnapTravel Return & Exchange Policy

What doesn’t make SnapTravel legit (and makes customers angry) is their return policy.

Like many third-party companies, SnapTravel states that they are not responsible if an event arises, like cancellations, delays, etc. There will be no refunds. 

For example: if you booked a great travel deal on a hotel of your dreams only to discover they don’t have a reservation with your name when you arrive, you’re still liable.

You might be able to get SnapTravel credits, but they’re far and few between. 

These issues are among the many SnapTravel complaints you will see online. 

Their return policy is a little better for SuperShop. When you purchase items through Supershop, you can receive a full refund within 30 days of delivery. This is normally more than enough time to return items that you don’t like.

Any item you purchase through SuperShop will normally ship between 24 – 48 hours and will then arrive within 7 – 10 business days. 

The best news is that shipping is free within the United States! That free shipping saved me a lot of money and stress over the years.

Is SnapTravel legit and can be trusted? It certainly can! The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives it an A+ rating with almost 2700 reviews and 4.44 out of 5 stars.   

Other SnapTravel reviews and online reviews on sites like Trustpilot rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars. SnapTravel works and it’s possible to find great deals. 

Snaptravel’s average rating is still high compared to other sites I’ve used. If they fix up a few things (like the flights), their score can increase significantly.

You must first use the chat feature to find the best deals for your trip. Message them the dates and locations for your upcoming trip.

Using their messenger to find the best hotel deals is a simple feature, saving you good money! What really makes SnapTravel legit are its deals on hotels. 

Using SnapTravel to book hotels with their SuperCash card creates amazing savings. It’s something everyone should think about using when planning their vacation.

My favorite alternative to SnapTravel is Hotels.com . This is largely due to their fantastic rewards program for hotels. A lot of times, you’ll get a great deal plus a one-night stamp.

SnapTravel Is the Best New Way to Get a Hotel Deal

If you love Facebook Messenger, you may already know that a few pioneering travel companies like Kayak and Skyscanner are making booking a trip as easy as texting your friend, using artificial intelligence–powered programs called chatbots. Now, a new company called SnapTravel is doing them one better: It aims to not just answer questions like “How much for a room in Chicago this weekend?” but also provide the best price on that room available anywhere. According to SnapTravel cofounder Hussein Fazal, the company has specially negotiated rates that aren’t seen anywhere else.

To test that claim, I searched for “four-star” hotels near San Francisco ’s Union Square for the weekend of August 12-14. SnapTravel recommended The Marker San Francisco, priced at $253 a night including taxes, or $506 for the weekend. For those same dates, Kayak had The Marker at $583 all in; Skyscanner didn’t list the property. The best rate available through The Marker’s own site was $538 including taxes.

SnapTravel also found notable deals for an upcoming Saturday night in Chicago , suggesting the Kimpton Hotel Allegro for $215 including taxes. A night booked through Kayak was $323 including taxes and fees; the lowest price bookable through Skyscanner had the hotel for $221 a night, though it wasn’t clear if that rate included taxes. Kimpton’s own site had the hotel for $348.

While the deals are compelling, SnapTravel is ultimately hoping to simplify the hotel booking process , says Fazal. “Kayak and Skyscanner seem to be providing a ton of recommendations, similar to going online and searching yourself,” he says. “We’ll be curating the recommendations and only providing the best two or three options.”

There is no SnapTravel app to download; instead, users can connect via Facebook Messenger, SMS, or the chat program Slack to communicate their budget, area preferences, and more. And while the booking service currently only offers hotel rooms, with deals like these, we’re hoping flights and rental cars aren’t too far behind. Skyscanner is similar to Kayak and allows you to book flights, hotels, and car hire, and as a package. Around 100 million people use it every month and it works as a metasearch engine.

Trivago is another metasearch engine that pulls deals from online booking websites. It does hotels only and is reliable. It searches across 5 million hotels and 300 websites so you get a lot of options.

Agoda also provides a lot of great flight and hotel deals as well as travel activities and airport transfers. It searches across 2.5 million hotels and multiple airlines to get you the best deal possible.

Booking.Com

Booking.com is an excellent site to book hotels and apartments around the world. It is very trustworthy and the system works. They have also started offering flights but don’t quite have the range available compared to other sites yet.

Is Snaptravel Worth It?

Overall, Snaptravel is pretty solid and it does a good job of finding you good deals but it does not come without its risks.

Most hotel bookings are not refundable, this makes life hard if the hotel doesn’t deliver and if you change your plans. Plus, reconfirming directly with the airline or hotel is a must, if just for peace of mind.

I have traveled a lot, and personally always book directly with the airline or hotel as the hassle of things going wrong is just not worth it. Changing things becomes a lot harder when you have a 3rd party in the middle to deal with.

SnapTravel raises $8 million for a hotel booking service that works over chat

Chatbots – automated bots that let you interact with a service or brand via messaging apps or SMS – haven’t yet become breakout hits, as a group. But that hasn’t stopped investors from pouring in $8 million into a hotel booking startup called SnapTravel , which lets users find and book rooms via SMS texts and Facebook Messenger.

The $8 million Series A round was led by iNovia Capital , a backer of Luxury Retreats which just exited to Airbnb for around $200 million. The round also included participation from seed round investors  Lightbank , Bee Partners , and Hedgewood , along with  strategic investor and Expedia board member  Peter Kern , among others.

iNovia’s Chris Arsenault is joining SnapTravel’s board with the close of the round.

The startup itself was founded in spring 2016 by tech entrepreneurs  Hussein Fazal , whose prior company AdParlor grew to $100+ million in revenue, then sold to AdKnowledge back in 2011 ; and Henry Shi , who previously built uMentioned and worked at Google, where he helped launch YouTube Music Insights.

Unlike a number of chatbots on the market today, SnapTravel isn’t a fully automated solution – arguably, to its advantage. The “bot” part of the service aids with onboarding and can answer users’ simpler questions, but when things get tricky, human agents are able to step in. For example, if you booked a non-refundable hotel but your flight gets cancelled due to weather, an agent would respond to your questions and try to help, rather than leaving you to deal with an unsympathetic bot.

You can also ask the agents for help with questions bots can’t handle – like if the hotel is pet-friendly, or if you can get adjoining rooms, among other things.

“Customers want a travel agent experience, but they didn’t want to call; they didn’t want to walk into a store,” explains Shi. “They just wanted to email us or message us,” he says, of when the company began testing ideas. That led them to realize that delivering the hotel booking experience could work over chat.

SnapTravel’s human agents effectively operate as modern-day travel agents. They’ll call hotels for you, as needed, and even phone to confirm your check-in and attempt to negotiate a free upgrade on your behalf.

Shi says that hotels honor SnapTravel agents’ special requests around 70 to 80 percent of the time, and they are able to upgrade customers to better rooms around 25 percent of the time.

Though still an early stage startup, SnapTravel has made a bit of a name for itself due to its deals and its “app-less” business model.

As customers continue to use SnapTravel to make their bookings, the service learns more about individual preferences – like if you want free Wi-Fi or free breakfast, for instance – and then takes those into consideration for its future recommendations.

SnapTravel doesn’t necessarily have any deals you can’t find elsewhere, but it can feel like it, at times. As its own website explains, it has access to the same unsold hotel inventory that others do. The service’s hotel inventory comes both directly from hotels themselves, as well as via partners like Expedia, Booking.com, Amadeus, Hotels.com, and Sabre (pending).

But while agreements between hotels and some hotel booking services disallow them from posting their super-low rates publicly, SnapTravel is able to work around that restriction because it’s only displaying prices through private, 1-on-1 chats – not publicly on the web.

But SnapTravel is not always the place for the lowest priced deal or the most options, some reviewers have found.

However, lower cost is not SnapTravel’s only draw, Shi points out.

“We’re 100 percent free to the customer…the way we make money is the commission on the hotels,” he says. “But we’re building a relationship with the customer because we’re chatting with them over a channel that’s very intimate, like SMS or Messenger. For us, it’s a conversation – and that conversation doesn’t stop when you make a purchase. It goes from search to purchase to upgrade to even post-checkout,” Shi explains.

It eventually wants to reach users worldwide through other platforms, as well, like WeChat and Line.

SnapTravel’s app-less biz model

The company believes that chatbots hold potential – especially in the case of Facebook Messenger, in terms of reach. (Messenger topped 1.2 billion monthly users worldwide in April, for example.) SnapTravel doesn’t need to get anyone to download its app in order to work.

The team appreciates that SnapTravel can advertise to users in-app through things like Sponsored Messages, and retarget them directly in their messaging inbox when they fail to complete a transaction. In that latter case, SnapTravel says it has seen a 30 percent jump in conversions when retargeting in this way on Messenger.

“Being able to re-engage customers is critical for any commerce company. Typically, with an [online travel agency] when you come to the website and bounce, they have to follow you around the internet using display ads,” notes Shi. “That’s a very noisy and ineffective channel,” he adds.

“For us, being able to use Sponsored Messages on Facebook has been super effective. We’re seeing double-digit lift from these re-engagement efforts,” Shi says.

With the additional funding, SnapTravel says it will invest further in its Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities in order to reduce the reliance on human agents as its scales. In this envisioned future, that would mean an automated bot would be able to understand a conversational input from a user, like “I’m going to New York next week Wednesday for a night, and need a room at the usual spot,” for example.

Without needing a human to translate that into a booking request, SnapTravel would then send the customer to the booking form for the right hotel and take their payment through Messenger.

Currently, SnapTravel is a dozen or so product engineers based in Toronto, in addition to an operations company stateside. With the new funds, the startup plans to expand to a team of 20 to 25.

How to Earn Business Travel Rewards with SnapTravel

Disclosure: This review is sponsored by SnapTravel, but as usual, I did my own research. All claims and opinions are my own.

Personally, I prefer the Facebook Messenger option because it allows me to view these offers in a desktop browser, which is how I book all my travel. The interface is very similar to what you’ll find on other OTA platforms once the new window opens.

You can also opt to interact with SnapTravel and set different filters in the messaging platform if you prefer. Here’s an example of chatting with the SnapTravel bot. The point is, SnapTravel has multiple interfaces that can be as familiar or tech-savvy as you like.

I tested SnapTravel with a couple of reservations, including this one for a mid-week stay at the Renaissance Hotel in Seattle. If you’ve been to Seattle before, you know it can be an expensive market, especially in the summer months when business travelers are competing with tourists. This hotel is conveniently located downtown near transit and the Washington State Convention Center and was recently renovated.

More Rewards Using SnapTravel for Business

SnapTravel had a headline rate of $387 (before tax), which it compared to $496 on Hotels.com. So far, so good. It even got a little better when I scrolled down and found there was a cheaper room for $381. That’s a 23% discount and would save you over $100 a night! Business traveler packages offer a way to take a piece of that savings for yourself.

You might notice during your search that SnapTravel asks if you are traveling for business. If you select “yes” you’ll find additional offers. These rates are a little higher but include special benefits and reward credits to make up the difference. Each credit is worth a dollar toward a future booking, and SnapTravel says you can earn between 15% and 35% back when you book these business traveler packages. Most competing OTAs offer about 5-10% in rewards, and as I’ve shown they might also be accompanied by higher rates.

Business traveler packages include special treatment from the SnapTravel concierge team, which will reach out to your hotel in advance to request an upgrade, and past users have reported regular text messages to check in on their stay. By speaking to the hotel in advance SnapTravel can try to ensure a smooth check-in process and resolve any issues before you show up. It also promises better integration with expense software such as Expensify.

In this test case at the Renaissance, you can book a business traveler package for $436, which is still cheaper than any of the competing OTAs, and get these benefits as well as a $142 credit for a future trip. You could accumulate these credits over multiple business trips and use them for a future booking (including personal travel).

Is SnapTravel Legitimate?

The most surprising feature of SnapTravel is lower rates than you’ll find anywhere else, and the massive rewards you can earn with some business hotel bookings, up to 35% in some cases. I’ve seen much larger rate discounts of $200 per night or more at hotels like the Thompson Seattle (which recently joined World of Hyatt ).

These kinds of savings can make SnapTravel look suspicious to the casual observer. If something is too good to be true, it usually is. I decided to see if SnapTravel could stand up to the competition when I compared rates myself.

I checked the rates myself at Hotels.com and also using Google, which has a pretty good tool to aggregate hotel rates from multiple OTAs and the hotel’s own website. In this case, all but one OTA had the same, higher rate of $496 that SnapTravel uses to calculate its savings. There was a single offer of $438 through Trip.com, but even this exception is still more expensive than SnapTravel’s business traveler package and doesn’t some with the same benefits or credit.

Checking several other hotels yielded similar results. SnapTravel was often about 20% cheaper than competing OTAs. I found only one case where SnapTravel was more expensive, and that was a difference of just $4 because the competition was offering a non-refundable rate.

Business Travel Ethics

There’s one final point that I think deserves attention. There are lots of things we do in the travel rewards space to maximize our benefit at the expense of someone else. (Manufactured spend comes to mind.) None of these are strictly forbidden, but they probably aren’t how the program was intended. Likewise, your employer probably didn’t intend to let you collect a rebate in exchange for booking a more expensive rate (though many do explicitly allow you to keep loyalty program points).

On the other hand, most corporate travel policies have a defined cap on what you can spend, and choosing a hotel at the high end of that range is acceptable even if cheaper options are available. I took the bus on a recent business trip, and my colleagues laughed at me because they expensed an Uber ride.

What’s good about SnapTravel is that you don’t have to choose between saving money for your employer and pocketing a reward. It’s possible to do both, as many hotels have business traveler packages on SnapTravel that are still cheaper than the competing rates on other OTAs. There’s nothing to prevent you from using the rebate on future business trips, too, which would be useful if you’re self-employed and covering your own travel costs. Obviously, use your own best judgment.

SnapTravel took some getting used to, as I had to submit my request and then wait for the service to ping my phone or Facebook Messenger. But once that was out of the way, it was easy to use and seemed to offer better rates on the majority of hotels.

For leisure travelers, I found the discounts are often 10-30% vs. the competition, and they’re even higher at some luxury hotels if you’re considering a splurge on vacation. The largest discount I saw was 48%. For business travelers, check out the business traveler packages. They cost a little more up front, but they include additional benefits and include a credit you can use toward future reservations.

The reason is primarily due to the overwhelming amount of options in travel deal sites like Priceline or Scott's Cheap Flights that are directly competing with each other to provide travelers with the best deals. After all, it's only normal you'll want the best of the best travel deals, right?

That’s where SnapTravel comes in handy. Not heard of them before? Perhaps you've seen their online reviews and you're wondering... should I really trust them?

I've looked into the reviews and research so you don't have to. Here's the facts about SuperTravel, previously known as SnapTravel.

What Is SnapTravel?

Founded in 2016, Snaptravel is a Canadian startup that aims to get customers the best prices on hotels and flights using AI. In August 2020, according to GlobeTrender, they had helped book more than 350,000 nights in over 150 countries.

SnapTravel describes itself as a “travel agent over messaging.” Their services offer a platform of accommodation booking services, namely Snaptravel hotels or Snaptravel Flights, that aims to bring the latest cheap travel deals to its customers. They offer you promotions and great rates via 1:1 private chat through SMS, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

You send them a message with your city and date preferences, and you’ll get a reply with SnapTravel's tailored travel deals, which you can then easily take advantage of with a few clicks.

SuperTravel - SnapTravel Rebranded

SnapTravel is currently undergoing the process of rebranding to SuperTravel . While the logo and name has changed, the company promises that all the travel deals, credits, and points will stay the same.

I'll continue to refer to SuperTravel as SnapTravel until the rebranding is complete as to not confuse you!

A suspected reason for the rebranding is to reduce the amount of negative reviews SnapTravel currently has online, which I'll also cover extensively below!

How Do You Use Snaptravel?

So how does Snaptravel work, exactly? It's pretty straightforward.

If you scroll down to the bottom of Snaptravel's webpage, you can browse hotel deals by city or destination.

This allows you to see what’s available before you begin messaging with SnapTravel to scope out prices and locations. You cannot book online, though, as you have to go through SMS or Facebook Messenger to access SnapTravel’s deals.

Looking for VIP upgrades? SnapTravel can also help tune up the quality of your stay to make your trip extra special.

SnapTravel operates in a similar fashion to the one-to-one relationship you might have with a travel agent, but they use AI to act as the agent. Their booking engine uses industry connections and relationships to search for private contract rates, bulk fares, and consolidator inventory that aren’t typically available to the public.

If you're on Fb Messenger, you can also use SnapTravel to look for deals the same way you can chat with your friends online!

This means that customers are getting not only the best rates but ones they might not find anywhere else.

SnapTravel describes itself as being “half-bot, half-human.” This means that while many of your inquiries will be handled by a bot, you can still speak with a human agent if need be.

The ease of using an AI service means that you will get quick and efficient service to help you find the best rates for your travel adventures.

Discount Flight Tickets

While SnapTravel started as a booking service for hotels, they have expanded to include flights in their service. For great deals on flights, check out their specialized flight webpage .

Their unique flight search algorithm helps you find the best-unpublished fares so you can travel on a ticket that fits your budget.

Unlike the hotel booking service, SnapTravel’s flight service allows you to conduct your research entirely online as opposed to via messaging apps. Simply put in your travel information, and you can view all the discounted flight options.

Is SnapTravel Legit?

Conde Nast Traveler calls the app the " best new way to get a hotel deal ". But are they really the new best way to find deals?

While they sound really good on paper, the SnapTravel reviews online paint a different picture.

Is SnapTravel legit? If so, why is SnapTravel so cheap? Let's take a look at what other people are saying about SnapTravel.

SnapTravel has an average rating of 4.5/5 stars (TrustPilot), with an A+ rating on Better Business Bureau. Based on SnapTravel reviews, the flight deals service does deliver on the promises and can find exclusive deals at cheap rates.

However, many of the SnapTravel reviews regarding its legitimacy on TrustPilot are written by invited reviewers, which means that SnapTravel requested they write a review after using their services. These reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

Unfortunately, if you booked a non-refundable trip through SnapTravel, you will not be issued a refund for any cancellations or changes. Another important small print item is that SnapTravel is not liable for any issues arising with the hotel supplier. If a hotel is unable to honor your reservations, you will be responsible for any fees incurred.

So... What does SnapTravel's official cancellation and refund policy say?

SnapTravel is not responsible for any problems in the event of “delay, cancellation, overbooking, strike, force majeure or other causes beyond our [SnapTravel] direct control.” In those situations, no refund will be issued.

SnapTravel's Response to COVID-19 Related Cancellations

Currently, SnapTravel is offering a flexible policy for refunds on Covid-19 related cancellations, so don't fret!

If you find out that your trip must be canceled due to covid-19 issues but your trip is non-refundable, just shoot a message on their website to the support team and they'll get back to you as soon as possible, hopefully with a full refund.

How Does SnapTravel Make Money?

As customers can use SnapTravel’s services for free, they don’t make their money directly through them. SnapTravel makes a percentage of every hotel booking they sell.

What Is SuperCash?

SuperCash , long for SuperCash MasterCard® Hybrid Card, is an online debit-credit hybrid card offered by SuperTravel (SnapTravel) with big perks associated with purchases on SuperTravel's site.

The SuperCash™ Mastercard® is issued by MRV Banks, headquartered in Missouri, United States. So what does the hybrid card offer?

SuperCash Card offers 10% cashback on SuperTravel purchases, 5% in the SuperShop, and 2% everywhere else. They've pitched it as an easy way to earn credit points with no minimums, monthly fee, overdraft, and interests.

Is SnapTravel Worth It?

So, what do SnapTravel reviews tell us? Is SnapTravel/SuperTravel actually worth using to find the best hotel deals?

If you’re looking to make the booking process for your next travel adventure seamless and easy, you should consider using SnapTravel. With a few taps on your phone, you can be on your way to scoring great deals on Snaptravel hotels and flights!

While there are many mixed SnapTravel reviews out there saying different things, it's easy to get overwhelmed.

The majority of the negative SnapTravel reviews are based on fluctuating and dynamic accommodation prices, which operate similarly to larger travel providers like Booking.com. While they could do a better job at communicating that, the dynamic fluctuation of prices is outside SnapTravel's control.

All that being said, we recommend you to look up deals SnapTravel have to see if you can find the cheap flights or hotels you might want, but definitely keep other alternatives in consideration, such as Hopper !

From the reviews, I would book deals with Snaptravel only if they've got significantly great deals, at the risk of miscommunication and subpar customer support response rate.

How to Plan Your Next Vacation With a Chatbot

Need to book a hotel on the go, or a friendly dinner recommendation while exploring a new city? There’s a bot for that.

In fact, there are now chatbots for all kinds of things, from weather updates to health advice, as the popularity of smartphone messaging apps driven by artificial intelligence grows.

Mobile messaging apps were used by 1.6 billion people in 2016, and will reach two billion in 2018, or 80 percent of all smartphone users, according to the digital data researcher eMarketer .

Another sign of their growing influence was evident last April, when Facebook announced it was opening its Messenger app to any outside company that wants to integrate its own bots into the chat program.

Now, the booking services Expedia, Kayak, Skyscanner and many others are allowing potential customers to seek recommendations on hotel rooms and flights and book them via Facebook Messenger.

Several other travel-related bots have sprung up in recent months, providing services like bookings and tips for activities, with a robotic touch.

The technology is young, and while most of these chatbots have yet to become viable alternatives to existing travel planning options like Trip Advisor and traditional guides, it could be only a matter of time before our smartphone-obsessed culture embraces booking by text.

Here is what three of the more interesting options have to offer so far:

SnapTravel aims to find you a hotel based on your budget and preferences via SMS, Facebook Messenger or Slack. It uses a combination of artificial and human intelligence to search Expedia, Priceline and more than 100 other sites for the best deal, and claims to have “secret deals” of its own.

The bot first asks for your travel city and dates, whether you have a specific hotel brand in mind and if you have any neighborhood preferences in the city.

I texted SnapTravel while I was looking to book a few nights in my hometown, Binghamton, N.Y., during Thanksgiving week. Based on my initial responses, SnapTravel gave me a cost estimate for three- and four-star hotels in the area.

After another series of questions regarding my budget, brand preference and more, I was told to hang tight and it would get back to me with hotel options within an hour.

Seven minutes later, I was sent what it deemed my four best options, with photos and links to more details and booking options for each hotel, a link to a map with more options, and I was asked if I wanted to be put in touch with one of its travel agents (who can offer some human insight).

The entire process from start to finish took 16 minutes. But it felt more like an automated phone call with a cable company than a typical text conversation. I thanked the bot, and was pleased that it did not bug me later on, something I had expected.

The hotel recommendations were a mixed bag. I told the bot that I prefer Marriott hotels, and it included a Courtyard Marriott within my budget. The other three included a bed-and-breakfast, a local resort and a Homewood Suites by Hilton. Points for variety, but another Marriott choice would have been nice. Meanwhile the map with more options had only two additional hotels.

As far as the deals themselves, they seemed legitimate when compared with the prices seen on discount booking websites like Hotwire.com. When you click on the hotel’s link on SnapTravel, you get its rates, are told whether there is a cancellation fee and are given the opportunity to compare its rate for that hotel with other booking sites.

While you won’t get a comprehensive list to shop from, SnapTravel mostly did what it claims it can do, and in a timely manner.

Hello Hipmunk

A spinoff from the Hipmunk booking website and smartphone app, Hello Hipmunk offers up a cute chipmunk to help you book travel from Facebook Messenger, Slack or Skype.

Just be careful what you ask for. You will need to be specific if you want to get relevant results.

I used Messenger to converse with Hipmunk, and before I had a chance to say hello, the critter asked me what airport I usually fly from. I said La Guardia, assuming it would understand that I meant La Guardia Airport in New York City. But it came back with: “Looks like you’re planning a getaway from Laguardia, Spain.”

I tried again, asking for some flight deals from New York to Chicago for the next week. He came back with: “You’re looking for the best time to go from New York City, NY, to Chicago, IL. Hold on, I’m digging through the data now. :)” Not really there, but we’re getting closer, and I appreciate the service with a smile.

Next I tried: “I need a flight from New York to Chicago, leaving tomorrow and coming back on October 9.”

That seemed to do it.

“Ready to jet? I’m finding you flights from New York City, NY, to Chicago, IL, on October 05, coming back on October 09,” the Hipmunk bot said. “I searched 736 itineraries. The least agonizing itinerary flies from LGA to ORD.” Below were nine itineraries, rated one to nine in order of “least agonizing” with times and prices.

This bot is fun to play with if you have the time, but it has a ways to go in the accuracy department.

For the business traveler, there is Pana, which, like SnapTravel, combines artificial and human intelligence to plan your trip. The human factor seems to play a more significant role than it did with the other bots I tried.

You don’t need to be a business traveler to benefit, but you do need to be a frequent-enough traveler to justify the cost: $49 per month ($499 annually) for its “concierge” plan. But there is a seven-day free trial to start.

The involvement of humans may have explained the short delay in Pana’s response to my initial text (three minutes felt like an eternity compared with the other bots), but it also ultimately led to better results.

After signing up and giving some basic information, including your email and phone number, Pana asks you for a quick phone call to get to know you a little better. But in keeping with the spirit of avoiding as much human interaction as possible, I passed on that and sought out its A.I. guidance.

Pana gives you three ways to start: through email, SMS or its app. I chose SMS and received an introductory hello. I then texted that I wanted to fly from New York to Chicago, leaving next Monday and returning Friday.

I got a response from “Jo” and learned that she is “a Canadian transplant in Hong Kong, avoiding the snow and loving the urban island life.” Jo promised to look into my flight options and send them to me shortly. About an hour later, I received four flight itinerary options, sorted by price from lowest to highest.

This was as far as I took it, but Pana is designed to be a long-term relationship. Your virtual travel agent can check you into flights and suggest hotels, and then can pivot to concierge-mode to recommend restaurants and activities in your destination city.

How It Works

You start by sending a message (via SMS, Facebook Messenger, or WhatsApp) with your destination and desired dates. Within seconds, you’ll get a message back with a link to all of your available hotel deals.

From there, you can filter the results by star rating, price, location, or savings. You have the option to switch to map view, enter in a specific budget range, or look for particular amenities, like a pool or being pet friendly. You can also browse through hotels on the desktop experience if that’s what you prefer.

Snaptravel also offers deals on airfare and car rentals. The process for booking these works more like traditional travel-booking sites, where you enter your desired location and dates and choose the best deal that fits your needs.

Let’s Take a Trip

I’ve been dreaming of a summer vacation in Paris, so I thought I would explore the process of what it would be like to book a Parisian hotel using Snaptravel.

I started by sending a message via Facebook Messenger with my destination and desired dates. A few seconds later, I received a message with a list of hotel deals to choose from (523 different hotels, to be exact).

After filtering by location, I settled on a boutique hotel in the Faubourg-Montmartre district, called Hôtel Eugène en Ville, because it’s highly rated, looks super stylish, and is located within walking distance to many top sightseeing spots.

The deal I was offered was $178 per night. When I entered the same dates into other popular travel-booking sites, the price range was between $216 and $218. That’s a savings of $280 for a weeklong stay!

For better or for worse, selfies have become emblematic of today's high-tech, mobile modern culture. Self-portraits are nothing new, of course, but smartphones and tablets make it easier than ever to snap photos of yourself (and your friends) and display them to the world. Instagram feeds are full of smug faces in beautiful and exotic locations. But you don't have to travel far to find an amazing backdrop. Here are some of the best places to say "cheese" to yourself in all 50 states. 

Alabama: Noccalula Falls

Northern Alabama is filled with beautiful spots worthy of likes. Gadsden, known for its outdoor attractions, features a campground with one of the prettiest waterfalls in the country. Visit Noccalula Falls to picnic, pet farm animals, and selfie the day away for a very reasonable price: just $8 for adults.

Alaska: Mendenhall Glacier

Alaska boasts some of the most impressive vistas anywhere in the world. For a memorable selfie that captures an awesome outdoor adventure, hike to the Mendenhall Glacier ice cave in Juneau. Inside, the ice gives everything a bluish hue. Selfies look electric, with no filter necessary. But be warned: The trek can be dangerous and requires at least six to eight hours.

Arizona: Grand Canyon

Few places in the country match the majesty of the Grand Canyon, a bucket-list destination for many people. Easily accessible Grand Canyon National Park is now a haven of selfie sticks, so be sure to watch your back for other photographers and make sure you're not poking into anyone else's view. Far more important is to keep in mind that about a dozen people die here annually , and some of those have always been reckless photographers. Timed correctly and with safety in mind, a photo taken here could be a worthy profile pic.  

Arkansas: Hot Springs National Park

Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas is a destination for hiking, waterfalls, and relaxation in hot-spring baths. With their natural beauty, the water features and trails create picture-perfect spots for snapping photos to post online.

California: Griffith Observatory

There's no shortage of fun things to do or places to be seen in Los Angeles. For a selfie that will stand out, head to the amazing Griffith Observatory, located in one of America’s best urban parks. Take a moment to enjoy the view, then turn around and get a photo of yourself with the skyline or the Hollywood sign in the background.  

Colorado: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Colorado is a scenic state with thriving urban areas as well as fantastic recreation areas, mountains, and wilderness. Concertgoers love Red Rocks, an outdoor amphitheater carved into the foothills just outside Denver. It's a dramatic venue for a selfie, even when there is no band performing.

Potential visitors to Connecticut may not be able to rattle off many photo ops in the Nutmeg State, but residents know plenty of sights worth exploring and photographing. One fascinating place for a selfie: Gillette Castle State Park. The historic mansion on the grounds resembles a medieval fortress.

Delaware: Air Mobility and Command Museum

The Air Mobility and Command Museum is one of the most popular and highly rated attractions in Dover. The museum is chock-full of vintage and antique planes, many from the Air Force. Admission is free, and on some tours you can hop in a cockpit for a picture.  

District of Columbia: The Tidal Basin

A picture in front of the White House clearly says you're in the nation's capital, but the big black fence in front of the president's home can be visually distracting. Better still might be a photo at the Tidal Basin with Jefferson Memorial or the Washington Monument unobscured in the background, preferably during cherry blossom season in the spring.

Florida: Molasses Reef

For selfies in Florida, be sure to bring a waterproof camera or case — some of the best spots are underwater. One is Molasses Reef in the Florida Keys, a magnet for diving and snorkeling. No need to fine-tune your expression while wearing a mask.

Georgia: Arabia Mountain

Residents of Georgia and tourists staying in Atlanta can visit Arabia Mountain in Lithonia, just east of the city. The gorgeous landscape is tough to beat for hiking and photos, no matter the time of day.

Hawaii: North Shore of Oahu

Hawaii is filled with breathtaking photo opportunities. Each of the islands is beautiful and unique, but if you must choose one place, make it the north shore of Oahu, where jagged rocks jut into crystal blue ocean. Just turn around, take the shot, and watch the likes roll in. 

Idaho: Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is home to a section of the Snake River where the rapids get wild enough to give adventure seekers impressive stories and amazing selfies. Just make sure to hold tight to your raft with one hand and use a waterproof camera or case.

Illinois: Cloud Gate ('The Bean')

You'd be hard-pressed to find a tourist who has been to Chicago in the past decade and doesn't have a photo of themselves with the famous Cloud Gate. Colloquially known as "the Bean," the sculpture in Millennium Park is a quintessential selfie location. With its giant, curved, mirrored surface, Cloud Gate reflects and distorts the figures in front of it.

Indiana: Indiana Dunes National Park

Nature lovers will appreciate Indiana Dunes National Park on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The beautiful dunes sit near one of the state's industrial hubs, offering a stark contrast to the urban development just beyond the park's borders. Head to the lakefront at dawn, when the sun is coming up over the water, for a stunning selfie. 

Iowa: Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Iowa may be known for cornfields — not the most scintillating backdrop for a selfie — but there are plenty of other things to see in the Hawkeye State. One of the loveliest sights is the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, where gorgeous blooms are always on display either outdoors or inside the greenhouse. Strike a pose with tropical flowers when you're feeling beautiful.  

Kansas: Johnny Kaw Statue

Kansas has many roadside oddities, but few match the kitsch of Johnny Kaw, the state's answer to Paul Bunyan, the giant mythological lumberjack. Situated in City Park in Manhattan, Kansas, the 30-foot-tall concrete-and-steel statue of Kaw — who holds a scythe for harvesting wheat, rather than an ax like Bunyan — makes an awesome selfie companion.  

Kentucky: Churchill Downs

The best place for a selfie in Kentucky is arguably Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The world-famous horse race is perhaps the only place you won't mind getting photo-bombed, because extra people add impressive hats to the picture. Saddle up with some buddies and see how many brims you can fit in a single selfie. (Though you can't bring selfie sticks to the Derby itself.)   

Louisiana: Chauvin Sculpture Garden

For a kooky selfie in the Pelican State, look no further than the Chauvin Sculpture Garden. It's filled with interesting and offbeat art that would make a fun backdrop for a photo. Spend the day outdoors cruising for your favorite sculpture.  

Maine: West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

Maine, famous for its jagged coastline and delicious lobster, is home to many historic lighthouses that are well worth visiting. All are beautiful, but the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is particularly full of character. Any lighthouse lover would be happy to share the frame with this red-and-white-striped tower, which is more than 200 years old.  

Maryland: Baltimore's Inner Harbor

The Inner Harbor is a scenic tourist destination. In spring and summer, the juxtaposition of high-rise buildings with boats on the water makes for a great photo, even without your smiling face in the center. This is one instance where you might want to break out a selfie stick to get as much of the city and harbor in the photo as possible.  

Massachusetts: Historic Boston Common

Boston Common dates back to 1634 and served as both a Revolutionary War muster location for the colonial militia and the site of an eight-year British camp. Today the park continues its prominent role as gathering place for locals and visitors. It has ball fields, a "tot lot," and a neighboring Public Garden with swan boat rides.

Michigan: Turnip Rock

Nature lovers already know the Great Lakes State is filled with wonders. One striking destination for a selfie is Turnip Rock, just off the Lake Huron coast near the village of Port Austin. Kayaking is the best way for most adventurers to make their way to this wondrous land formation and snap a once-in-a-lifetime shot. It sure beats the same old "hot dogs or legs" beach photo.

Minnesota: Mall of America

The mall is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Gopher State. People come from all over the world to enjoy 4.3 miles of indoor shopping. An amusement park includes several roller coasters that range from mild to thrilling. Cellphones aren't allowed on rides, but the roller coasters make a fun backdrop for before and after photos. In 2019, the mall got a "Brave the Rainforest" exhibit that includes a unique selfie opportunity: a cage with 1,000 flying cockroaches of up to 4 inches in length.

Mississippi: Natchez Trace Parkway

Who knew that driving on a simple two-lane road could potentially produce such excellent photo-ops? The Natchez Trace Parkway, which begins in Mississippi, is overseen by the National Park Service. It provides too much natural eye candy to digest all at once, so best to snap a few selfies and preserve the views.   

Missouri: Gateway Arch

It's a bit cliché, but in the Show Me State, where better to pose for a selfie than in front of the preeminent Missouri icon, the Gateway Arch? Take a selfie from the ground or spring for a tram ride to the top and get a photo from above, with St. Louis and the Mississippi River in the background.  

Montana: Grinnell Glacier

Glacier National Park in Montana is one of the most beautiful in the country, and now is the time to visit, as climate change continues to erode its namesake glaciers. The magnificent Grinnell Glacier is situated above a blue-green pool of ice-cold water. It's a majestic place to take a selfie, but only the brave dare take a dip.  

Nebraska: Chimney Rock National Historic Site

Nebraska may not evoke thrills or visions of the perfect photo, but there is at least one awe-inspiring place for a selfie in the Cornhusker State. Chimney Rock National Historic Site in Bayard is a beautiful, soaring rock formation. Before snapping a smartphone photo, think of the reactions of early pioneers who passed by Chimney Rock heading west on the Oregon Trail.

Nevada: The Fountains at the Bellagio

Nevada's desert wilderness is beautiful and photo-worthy, but when it comes to getting comments on a selfie, Las Vegas is where it's at. One sure bet: the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel on the Strip. Especially at night, you can't go wrong with a selfie in front of the majestic dancing water and impressively lit hotel facade. It’s just one of many free things to do in Sin City.  

New Hampshire: Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway

In New Hampshire, hop on the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway to ride more than 4,000 feet up and take selfies along the way. Or wait till you reach the mountaintop, where the views extend to four states and Canada.

New Jersey: Atlantic City

For a classic Garden State selfie, what better place than one of the Jersey Shore's top tourist destinations — Atlantic City? Cheese it up on the boardwalk or head for the bright lights of one of the city's half-dozen casinos. But if you see a seal pup on the beach? Stay at least 150 feet away. No "sealfies" allowed, for the animals' sake.  

New Mexico: Earthships

Taos is home to unique and eerily beautiful "biotecture" edifices called Earthships. The self-sustaining and built-by-hand structures are marked with impressive mosaics, stained-glass windows, and architecture unlike most anywhere else. 

New York: Bowery Mural

New York City is home to as many selfie-worthy locales as it is people. One of the most colorful places to snap a photo is in front of the popular mural that's been painted at different times by artists like Cope2 and Banksy at the corner of Bowery and Houston streets in lower Manhattan.

North Carolina: Clingmans Dome

Nature lovers hankering for another scenic selfie need look no further than breathtaking Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles North Carolina and Tennessee. Occasionally a black bear might appear in the mountains and foliage behind you.  

North Dakota: Heritage Center & State Museum

The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck features thousands of artifacts and specimens, as well as high-tech displays and interactive exhibits that make it an ideal destination for history or archeology buffs. The museum also features life-size skeleton casts of a Tyrannosaurus rex and a triceratops, among other recreations of prehistoric beings, any of which would attract plenty of likes as the backdrop for a selfie.

Ohio: Marblehead

In the village of Marblehead, on a peninsula jutting into Lake Erie, sits the longest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. On a clear day, take a boat out and get a photo of yourself with the lighthouse in the background.

Oklahoma: Bricktown District

Oklahoma City's lovely Bricktown Entertainment District is full of charm, brightly colored storefronts, and endless selfie appeal. Around the winter holidays, pose with the giant Christmas tree. Or hail a pedicab or horse-drawn carriage and snap away.

Oregon: Crater Lake National Park

This park in southern Oregon is billed as being "like no place else on Earth," which may be reason enough to visit and, of course, take a selfie. The crystalline lake features an island — a dormant volcano — that rises 763 feet above the lake at its western end.  

Pennsylvania: Mount Washington

Pennsylvania is brimming with history (does the Liberty Bell, well, ring a bell?), but a scenic landscape might be the best setting for a selfie in the Keystone State. Set up a shot on Mount Washington, overlooking Pittsburgh. From this vantage point, you can put yourself in front of the city's skyline and surrounding natural beauty.

Rhode Island: The Cliff Walk in Newport

A public walkway that's been designated a National Recreation Trail, the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk offers sweeping views of the sea on one side and Newport's most opulent Gilded Age mansions on the other. Picture-takers will get to include the Breakers, summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt, as well as Rosecliff Mansion, where parts of the 1974 adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" were filmed.  

South Carolina: Never Bust Chain

A unique piece of public art in the Palmetto State, the Never Bust Chain in the state capital, Columbia, is a massive link of chain over an alley connecting two historic brick buildings. Get creative with angles to score an excellent selfie.

South Dakota: Mammoth Site

The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs is too cool to pass up as a selfie location. As implied by the name, the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world has been unearthed at this site. Check out the mammoth replicas and capture the moment you glimpse these giant fossils.

Tennessee: Crystal Shrine Grotto

The Crystal Shrine Grotto in Memphis' Memorial Park Cemetery is the largest man-made crystal cavern in the world. It features re-creations of Biblical scenes using rock quartz crystal and semiprecious stones — an otherworldly backdrop for a selfie. What's more, it's free.

Texas: Hamilton Pool Preserve

Outside Austin is a gorgeous natural wonder called the Hamilton Pool Preserve, which is astounding enough to warrant a roll of selfies. This wild and beautiful sight consists of a cave, a lovely lake, and a waterfall; it doesn't get much better than that. (Note: Reservations are required during the summer.)

Utah: Temple Square

One of the most scenic places to behold in Utah is Temple Square. Although non-Mormons aren't permitted inside the Salt Lake Temple, the imposing building makes for an irresistible photo opportunity. The Tabernacle is home to the famous Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (until recently known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir).

Vermont: Ben & Jerry's Factory

Don't mess around in Vermont — just go straight to the Ben & Jerry's factory. Take a half-hour tour to see how the ice cream is made, and take a photo of yourself sampling some of your favorite flavors at the scoop shop.  

Virginia: Virginia Beach

With the beach, classic cars, and giant statues of the Roman sea god Neptune, Virginia Beach practically begs visitors to throw on a little sunscreen and smile wide for selfies. The backdrops are so varied, you could fool followers into thinking you're in a different place in each photo.

Washington: Dr. José Rizal Park

Ever see beautiful photos of the Seattle skyline and wonder how the photographer got the shot? Most likely it was from Dr. José Rizal Park. Head to the west side of Beacon Hill to run around with your dog, enjoy a picnic lunch, and, of course, take a selfie with the iconic cityscape.

West Virginia: Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry in West Virginia is picturesque in the truest sense. The small town is also a national park, surrounded by the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers and lush green trees. Anywhere you turn for 360 degrees can serve as a beautiful backdrop for a selfie.  

Wisconsin: The Dells of the Wisconsin River

To get a Wisconsin Dells selfie without the crowds of people in waterparks, go to the natural Dells of the Wisconsin River. The jagged rock features lining the shores of the river are a self-portraitist's dream backdrop.   

Wyoming: Old Faithful

Yellowstone National Park is hyped as a camping, hiking, and recreational attraction for a reason: It's an absolutely stunning part of the country. A photo in front of Old Faithful is nothing to shake a selfie stick at. The famous geyser erupts every one to two hours, and a National Park Service geysers app estimates when visitors should be ready to pose … while some park pros have advice on where not to take a selfie in Yellowstone.

Beloved softball coach shot by alleged thief on Easter Sunday loses his life weeks later, team says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A beloved Houston-area softball coach has died weeks after he was shot on Easter Sunday by someone who police say was trying to steal his truck, the softball team announced.

The video above is from a previous report.

Ivan Ramirez, 42, was pronounced dead on Wednesday, according to the team.

Ramirez was a coach for Texas Magic Fastpitch Travel's softball team. He was also a husband and a father of three.

The shooting happened on March 31, outside the victim's home at an apartment on the South Beltway near Pearland.

Ramirez was home at this apartment complex on Easter Sunday when an app on his phone alerted him that his truck door had been opened.

HPD said when he came outside to investigate, the suspect shot at him multiple times.

Ramirez was transported to Ben Taub Hospital that day. He had undergone multiple surgeries and was in critical condition before he passed away.
