While existing social media apps may inspire jealousy in your followers, or enable you to share experiences with friends, they aren't designed for travelers. Thankfully, there are travel social media apps designed specifically for travelers, and these are the best.

1. Foursquare

Foursquare has been a mainstay of online travel planning for many years. The app offers an incredible number of functions, and allows you to search for nearby attractions based on the distance from your destination or current location, rating, or Foursquare's personalized estimate of your tastes.

The app also offers you the chance to follow travelers who have similar tastes to your own, read reviews from other travelers, and add your own insights to help fellow travelers in the future.

The ability to create and save your information in a profile means that your preferences, saved locations, and information will always be available to you, whether in the planning stages or in the middle of your trip.

Trover is one of the best apps available when looking for travel inspiration. The home screen presents you with many different feeds of beautiful images to view, including a feed of the most popular photos, a feed of the latest images, feeds specific to different locations, and feeds based on hashtags that have been assigned by users.

This app focuses more on the travel experiences of individual users and beautiful photographs than providing in-depth reviews or traveler tips. These functions make Trover ideal for conceptualizing a vacation you hope to take, but another app may be required to turn that trip into a reality.

3. Spotted by Locals

Spotted by Locals offers quirky sightseeing and activity ideas handpicked by real locals. When you have no idea what to do or where to eat, you can browse through a ton of helpful guides for over 70 cities. Since all of the suggestions are written by locals, you can expect to find some non-touristy, hole-in-the-wall destinations.

Just keep in mind that you can't access a full city guide or save spots unless you pay a fee for each guide. The offline version of the app is also only available if you pay. However, it may be worth it if you're looking for smart travel planning apps to put a unique spin on your trip.

4. Withlocals

While Spotted by Locals helps you find destinations thanks to guides written by locals, Withlocals connects you with local tour guides. You can use this social travel app to find food tours, walking tours, day trips, night tours, and even bike tours.

When you select a tour you're interested in, you'll see a detailed description of the tour along with an itinerary. Scroll down the page to find reviews by other users, and tap Pick Your Local to view each guides' profile and book your tour. After all, there's really nothing better than receiving a tour from someone who knows their way around.

5. Couchsurfing

The Couchsurfing website and app have been well-used over the past several years by budget-conscious travelers looking for a free place to stay. While the app is entirely free, you can increase your chances of finding a host by paying a fee to verify yourself.

Even if crashing on a stranger's couch isn't your preferred style of accommodation, the app can still be a great resource for meeting new people around the world.

Every profile on the website features information about the Couchsurfing hosts, as well as their photo. If you find a host in the area you plan on traveling to, it's worth sending them a message to see if they'd be willing to meet during your travels.

Travello is a social media app for travelers and people interested in traveling. When you sign up, you'll see a feed filled with posts made by people traveling around the world. If you want, you can even connect with the other travelers on the app by commenting on their photos or by messaging them to ask questions.

Many moons ago, solo travelers, especially women traveling alone, were looked at with a mix of pity and awe. Overall, people weren’t exactly sure why anyone would choose to travel solo. Luckily, the perception and experiences of solo travelers have changed significantly over the past few decades. Much of this has been due to the rise of social travel.

Social travel has been able to bring people together from around the world. This includes not only locals in a destination but other travelers as well. It helps cultivate a situation where people can learn from one another and about themselves. In many ways, social travel can be seen as an equalizer when approached responsibly. It’s had a major impact on solo travel by giving people tons of great opportunities for interaction and engagement. This can be “formal” like staying in homestays or Airbnbs or “informal” like meeting a random traveler at a hostel and traveling together for a while.

The Impact of Social Travel on Solo Travelers (Written by a Solo Traveler )

Disclaimer: I’ve been a solo traveler for 20 years with more than 150 countries and seven continents under my belt. The interactions that I’ve had with other travelers and with locals have shaped my best travel experiences and my everyday life in immeasurable ways. I have met some of my favorite travel buddies in the world while traveling, one of whom is now a fellow Let’s Roam writer. We met at a bus stop in Mexico and ended up doing a road trip through Turkey a few months later! My experiences have been so enriching and life-changing that I strongly believe that social travel makes you much, much more open-minded and knowledgeable about our world.

What is solo travel?

Before I get into social travel, I also want to clarify what we mean by solo travel. To start, solo travel does not mean traveling alone all of the time. This is a common misconception I think makes people nervous about traveling solo. What solo travel ACTUALLY means is setting off on an adventure by yourself rather than with a group or as a couple. 

What is social travel?

Okay, okay, I know. After talking about how great social travel has been for me, it’s probably high time to explain what exactly it is! At its most basic, social travel focuses on supporting local communities, learning about new cultures, and making travel accessible to all. One thing that makes social travel a bit different than other types of travel is that it also places emphasis on the relationships you develop with other travelers along the way. These relationships can last a few days or a lifetime. The important thing is you’ve learned from one another. 

This doesn’t mean simply spending your study abroad time hanging out with other American students and traveling on the weekends. This means talking to the people in the hostel that come from a wide range of ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds to get a better understanding of the world around us.

What are the benefits of social travel?

For most people, the biggest benefit of social travel is the opportunity to learn more about a destination than what you would if you were a “regular” tourist. The interactions you have can completely change the way you view a country or city. This seems especially at a time when the world feels like it is de-globalizing. For solo travelers, it could mean having someone to go to dinner with, being able to get an in-depth look into their everyday life, and getting to know how they feel about the issues affecting the country. 

Social travel also takes you out of your comfort zone. You may find yourself eating new foods, trying new things, and meeting different types of people. It could also help you discover new ways of traveling!

What are the different types of social tourism?

Since social tourism in itself is a relatively broad term, there are many different types of social tourism. Based on the definitions provided above, social tourism can include everything from travel itineraries full of cultural programming to backpackers finding local hosts and new friends who are happy to show them around on Couchsurfing.

Is social travel the same as group travel?

Social travel is different from group travel in a few ways. To start, social travel is most commonly done by solo travelers. This is usually the best way to interact with locals. Not only are people more willing to approach you when you’re alone, but you’re also more likely to seek out interactions with locals when you are by yourself. 

Group travel generally entails planning a trip together, meeting at either your departure point or at the first destination on your itinerary. This can be a group of your own friends or family or as part of a prearranged group by tour operators like Contiki or G Adventures. The group dynamics of group travel are generally quite different than when you social travel with other people.

How do you get involved in social tourism?

One of the best ways to get involved in social tourism is to simply interact with locals and travelers. While you generally had to wait until you reached a destination for this process to start, today, the advent of the internet and social media has made this much easier!

What are the best social travel apps for facilitating social tourism?

There are a ton of new apps flooding the market aimed at social travel. However, I’ve found that you really need just a handful of apps. All of these apps are found on both Android and iOS.

1. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is a combination between an app and a social network where travelers and local hosts can connect. You can use the app and website to find people in specific destinations. Much like Booking.com or Airbnb, you are then able to look at the potential host’s reviews and send them an accommodation request. There’s no money exchanged for accommodation but Couchsurfers will usually offer something in return like a couple of beers, dinner, or a gift from their home country. 

Besides being able to find hosts, there are also opportunities to find meetups all over the world. This is the perfect way to meet both locals and travelers at the same time. You not only get to learn about some of the hidden gems in a destination but you may also meet some new travel buddies!

2. Facebook

Facebook is one of the best apps for social travel. Facebook groups are a great way to connect with people living or traveling in a particular destination. I’m part of several different digital nomad and “extreme” travel groups where people who are looking to meet other travelers offline will post their travel plans with upcoming destinations. It’s really easy to organize a time or place to meet. I have made contact with many people this way before I’ve arrived at my destination. On short trips, I have even found myself with a full social schedule of great activities that only locals would know!

One of the best things about using Facebook to meet other people is you can use their Facebook profiles as a form of a vetting system. One quick look can usually give you an idea of their interests, how they interact with other people, and so on. You can use this information to decide whether you want to meet them. 

When Airbnb started, it was a great example of social tourism. Locals could make extra money by renting out rooms in their houses to travelers. Meanwhile, travelers could get a special insight into the everyday life of locals rather than staying in hotels or hostels. Although Airbnb has kind of moved to the polar opposite of its initial premise, the app still provides opportunities for social networking. 

When you’re searching for an Airbnb, try to find options where you are simply renting a room rather than an apartment. Although it’s nice to have your own space, you tend to miss out on the cultural interaction you would have otherwise. I would also steer clear of any Airbnb hosts that just send you a code to get in. This leaves very little room for interaction.

4. Tinder/Bumble

While you may find yourself groaning inwardly at the sight of these two popular dating apps, they are great for social travel. In my experience, many people are excited about meeting someone from a different culture. They’re also willing to show you around a bit. Plus, it’s kind of exciting to go on a date in a new country! As always, be careful and use the same common sense that you would at home and make sure someone always knows where you are. 

5. Let’s Roam app 

We may be a bit biased on this one, but we also think our very own Let’s Roam app is perfect for social travel. Full of great scavenger hunts for destinations all over the world, fun virtual games, and much more, the app can provide a slew of things to do with your new friends!

What are the best destinations for social travel?

If you want or are interested in traveling to destinations where you have a ton of opportunities for social interactions, check out the list below! This has been compiled based on my own and other travelers’ experiences. This list is in no way exhaustive. While we wish we could list all of the great social travel destinations, this article would end up going in forever!

While it may seem like an eclectic list, there’s one thing that every place has in common. They’re welcoming toward foreigners and they are curious to know more about you. This plays a huge role in the interactions you will have with locals. They are also popular tourist destinations with a developed travel industry so you’re bound to meet other travelers to chat with. 

The one thing you should always keep in mind while traveling is that the locals don’t owe you anything. As harsh as it sounds, never expect anyone to do anything for you. Locals aren’t tour guides. They have busy lives just like you do. Always appreciate what they’re doing for you but never demand it. I have watched this happen many times around the world. It doesn’t put travelers in a good light. Sadly, fellow tourists may not be shown the same generosity and hospitality in the future. 

India is one of the most bewildering countries on the planet. It’s crowded and chaotic. Sometimes it’s a wonder that anything works. At the same time, it’s vibrant and warm. Parents will hand you their babies for photos. Old men will offer you chai. And if you stare at someone’s food long enough, they are highly likely to offer you a taste. After you’ve talked to them for a while, there is also a high chance they will invite you to their house for “home food.” 

Most travelers will fly into Delhi. From here, you can take a plane, train, or bus to onward destinations like Rishikesh, Mumbai, Goa, and Varanasi. Everywhere you go, there’s a high chance you’ll have a great experience interacting with locals. If you’re lucky, you may even be invited to an Indian wedding!

North American snowbirds have been using Mexico as a winter base for decades. Besides the warm weather, one of the many reasons people love Mexico is because of the friendly people. This makes it a great destination for social travel. Overall, Mexicans are very nice and have a great sense of humor. Although many people speak English fairly well, a little bit of Spanish can go a long way, and people are usually more than willing to help you. 

The first thing you need to do is get out of the major tourist areas of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta. Instead, head to some of the smaller colonial cities like Merida, San Cristobal, or Guanajuato. These places are all very safe and are major vacation destinations for Mexicans. Once you’re there, you can either join a tourist experience led by locals or you can simply hang out at a cafe or cantina. Nine times out of ten, someone will come to say hello. Up until very recently, Saudi Arabia was in the public eye for all the wrong reasons. The treatment of women, human rights violations, etc. were major issues the country faced. However, all this began to change in the past decade. The country has made tremendous strides toward having a more open society which has included opening for tourism.

Today, you’ll find a country of warm, welcoming locals who will greet you with a cheerful “welcome to Saudi Arabia” everywhere you turn. Young women will ask you to take pictures with you while young men try to practice their English. You will likely be asked to join people for an early breakfast, mid-afternoon coffee, late-night shisha, and everything in between. It’s a heartwarming experience. It gives you a completely different perspective of the country than what you’ve probably seen on TV.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that. 

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong. 

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't. 

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money. 

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account. 

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time. 

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

Did New Jersey just have an earthquake? Yes, in Hunterdon County. Aftershocks continue.

If you felt that, you're not alone.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook up the region shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by two aftershocks of magnitude 2 at 11:20 a.m. and magnitude 2.2 at 1:32 p.m.

Where was the earthquake?

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon County, at 10:23 a.m.

The earthquake was 4.77 kilometers north northeast of White House Station and the depth was five kilometers. People felt the rumble from Maine to Norfolk, Virginia, officials said.

Will there be aftershocks?

Two aftershocks of magnitude 2 and magnitude 2.2 have struck since the quake, according to the United States Geological Survey. There is a small chance of an aftershock of 4.8-magnitude or greater, said Paul Earle of the United States Geological Survey.

This quake was felt by millions, Earle said, adding that East Coast quakes travel five times farther than West Coast quakes, because the rock here is harder.

When was the last earthquake in New Jersey?

The last earthquake in the Garden State was on March 15, measuring magnitude 2.2 struck near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County about 3 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.7 kilometers, the survey said.

Prior to March 15, the last earthquake in New Jersey was a 1.7-magnitude that occurred near the Lake Telemark section of Roxbury Township in Morris County in August 2022, according to the survey.

There have also been earthquakes at the Jersey Shore: a 2.2-magnitude at Tuckerton in June 2021; a 3.1-magnitude near Marlboro in September 2020; and a 1.4-magnitude that occurred near Keansburg in August 2017.

What was the strongest earthquake at Jersey Shore?

One of the strongest earthquakes at the Jersey Shore was a magnitude 3.8 quake that struck near Freehold on January 30, 1979.

“Objects were shaken from shelves and minor cracks were reported in masonry walls in a few towns near the epicenter” during that quake, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.

Earthquakes of less than a magnitude 3 are considered weak quakes with little noticeable shaking, according to the California Earthquake Authority.

South River homes shake, branches knock, alarms triggered

In South River, the start of rumbling was accompanied by small knick-knacks and toys falling from shelves. 

While at first it seemed likely that a truck or construction vehicle was headed down the street, it soon became apparent that something else was at play.

The house continued to shake for 20 to 30 seconds, as the rumbling noises continued, branches knocked against the walls, roof and windows, clanging noises were heard from a metal chimney pipe and a glass break security alarm was triggered. 

The power remained on, and there was no apparent damage at an electrical substation on Southside Avenue nor at a neighborhood park on the street.

Loud rumbling, shaking in Milltown 

In Milltown, about 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter, a loud rumbling noise accompanied shaking on Herbert Avenue in Milltown. A songbook fell off a piano inside one house.

Neighbors ran out of their homes and stood on lawns and porches asking each other what had just happened.

“It felt like my house was going to fall down,” said one resident. Another wondered if a residential construction project might have collapsed and caused the rumbling.

No visible damage was apparent on the block.

The roots of April Fools' Day may date back before to before the 15th century. But the modern-day April Fools' Day has become a day to prank a friend, family member, co-worker − or your customers.

Even though some companies have had April Fools' pranks backfire , marketers continue to issue spoof products in attempts to get some laughs and attention.

Already ahead of April Fools' Day, 7-Eleven has hinted at a possible prank product: In addition to new Lemon Lime, Green Apple and Sweet Orange flavored 7-Select sparkling waters, out now with partner Miracle Seltzer, there's a fourth flavor coming April 1: Big Bite Hot Dog.

The hot dog-flavored water "combines the mouthwatering experience of 7-Eleven’s iconic Big Bite Hot Dog into one refreshing beverage – ketchup and mustard included," the convenience chain says in a press release . "Say goodbye to the days of alternating bites of a hot dog with sips of a beverage, now those on the go can swap the bun for bubbles."

Krispy Kreme: A special doughnut deal for April Fools' Day

Will Big Bite Hot Dog sparkling water be sold? Its availability will be announced April 1. However, some reporters were sent a can of the drink. USA TODAY can confirm that it definitely smells like hot dog water and has a smoky aftertaste.

If you are interested in trying it, both 7-Eleven and Miracle Seltzer have hinted at having some to give away on their Instagram pages. (If you get a can, share with a friend as it's 16 ounces.)

Sour cream & onion flavored soda

Despite the proliferation of crazy-flavored products including Peeps-flavored Pepsi , Frank's RedHot sauce-flavored Vlasic pickles and Doritos Nacho Cheese-flavored liquor , healthy soda brand OLIPOP and Pringles are not really teaming up to bring to market a Sour Cream & Onion soda.

The product would have been "a match made in heaven … to bring the delicious, tangy flavor of Pringles’ Sour Cream & Onion flavor to life in liquid form with prebiotic benefits," the companies said.

Stoner lingo translation app

Another dream team prank product: Rosetta Stoned, a mobile app from Rosetta Stone and medical marijuana company Fluent , that "bridges the conversational gap between novice users and seasoned stoners in any social setting."

Infant equipment site BabyQuip has its own language-bridging lark: the “Baby Translator” app, to decode your baby's secret language.

"Say 'goodbye' to restless nights as you decode your baby's coos and cries instantly, providing you with the understanding you need as a parent, all in one convenient app," it promises.

An AI-powered plush doll

Custom stuffed animal maker Budsies already makes selfie plush dolls with a built-in voice recorder. Its April Fools' spoof: Artificial intelligence-enabled dolls that "come programmed to learn everything about you and to become your new best friend."

A 50-pound Bearabuddy

Sorry to the 3,500 or so who have already signed up to buy Bearaby's Jumbo Benji plush toy, which is four times the size of its regular weighted plush toys and twice as heavy as its heaviest weighted blanket . This isn't actually going to be sold. But it is real and will be making its home in the lobby at The Child Mind Institute in Harlem to welcome children and their families. More weighted plushies are due the day after April Fools' Day, the company says.

A sleeping bag to go bananas over

The Dole Banana Peel Sleeping Bag, conveniently promoted as being available on April Fools' Day only, is made from actual banana fiber and "allows parents to escape into their own cocoon of sensory deprivation."

A full-body cleaning suit

Outrageous clothing company Tipsy Elves has a special product for April Fools' Day: The Mopsie. You don't need paper towels anymore, you can use your body to clean up those messes, with this "innovative, wearable microfiber towel jumpsuit" for "effortlessly soaking up spills and messes with ease." There's also a Baby Mopsie for "hard to reach places."

Korean BBQ deodorant

Kevin's Natural Foods , which has paleo- and keto-certified ready-to-cook and easy-prep entrées, is touting a new line of personal care products inspired by its food dishes including Korean BBQ Deodorant, Cilantro Lime Toothpaste, Lemongrass Basil Shampoo and Tikka Masala Sunscreen.

"These new face, body and hair care essentials will help fans prioritize self-care inside and out," the company says. 

Omaha Steaks' meaty sprays

Omaha Steaks has its own personal care prank product: Meaty Spritz sprays with flavors such as Omaha Fog, Hog Haze, and Cock-a-Doodle-Dew.

"The world’s first protein-infused, flavor-packed, portable pump spray … (to) enjoy all the mouthwatering flavors of your Omaha Steaks gourmet favorites no matter how far away from the kitchen you are!" the company says.

Sriracha toothpaste

Asian sauce maker Lee Kum Kee , which makes Sriracha Chili Sauce and Sriracha Mayo Dressing, is introducing – not – its Siracha Mayo Toothpaste. It's "fiery and creamy goodness … is sure to spice up your morning dental routine."

Post-salad dental kit

Need some less powerful toothpaste? Sweetgreen offered these fanciful personal hygiene products as part of its Sweetgreen After Salad Kit, which is "designed with your pearly whites in mind … offering everything you need to freshen up post-meal."

Choose from Miso Ginger Toothpaste, Spicy Cashew Mints, Lime Cilantro Dental Floss, and Sweetgreen Toothbrush and Floss Picks.

Fruit juice lip gloss

More personal care prank products: Welch’s Juicyfuls Juicy Fruit Lip Gloss – now available in five flavors: grape, orange, peach, strawberry and raspberry – made with real juice from Juicefuls fruit snacks so "you get that irresistible sweet flavor you love, all in a lip gloss that's as fun as it is nourishing."

Protein-powered seasonings

Quest Nutrition , maker of protein powder, snacks and other products, has a prank product line of seasonings including All Purpose, Lemon Pepper, and Garlic Herb, each of which deliver "21g of protein, 2g of net carbs and less than 1g of sugar."

Superpowered Superfeet?

These would certainly come in hand on a run, but – sorry – it's a jogging joke. Superfeet SuperBoost Power E-Soles gives you 8 hours of continuous battery-powered boost, for almost Iron Man-like propulsion. "All the comfort and support of Superfeet , now with electrifying performance," the company says in a video about the prank product. "It's like having a powerful electric motor in your shoes."

Scotch tape-branded Scotch?

This shenanigan seems like a blend that could stick: Scotch Whisky by Scotch Brand. The whisky "features a nose of cherry wood and a delightfully smooth finish that hits like a well-wrapped gift."

Who you gonna call when ghosted? This new title at Tinder

Dating app Tinder announced a new April Fools' Day hiring quest for a Vice President of Ghost Hunting to help combat "one of dating culture’s most prevalent vices – ghosting," a practice inflicted on 78% of singles already in 2024 (an untrue fact from Tinder).

Patrón's bringing back a beloved liqueur. No kidding.

Patrón patrons get some good news today. The premium tequila maker chose April Fools' Day to announce the return of its Patrón XO Cafe tequila-based coffee liqueur, which was discontinued in 2021. Since production ceased, devotees took to social media and signed a petition asking parent company Bacardi to bring it back.

Made with Patrón Silver tequila and Arabica bean coffee – the dry liqueur can be sipped straight, in cocktails and as dessert topping – Patrón XO Cafe will begin arriving in stores again later this month.

Say it with dead flowers

Don't forget to put roses on your April Fools' Day list. UrbanStems has this "special" delivery, The Dead Inside Collection, "an assortment of dead flower bouquets, dead plants, half empty vases, and more for the pessimist in your life." But, for real, check UrbanStems' social media accounts including Instagram for how to get 20% off an order of real flowers.

Cheesecake Factory's real deals

The Cheesecake Factory  also has a deal that's no joke: Sign up for the chain's Cheesecake Rewards loyalty program on April 1 to get an Any Slice, Half Price reward, redeemable for 50% off any slice of cheesecake or layer cake, with any food or beverage purchase (no gift cards).

New merch from Dunkin', bonus points in app

Dunkin' announced it is going back to its roots and rebranding to just "Donuts'" on Monday, April 1. To celebrate the rebrand, the company is selling "Donuts'" merch, including sweatshirts that read "DONUTS," on ShopDunkin.com .

Additionally, Dunkin' Rewards members will receive 3x bonus points on any donut order through the mobile app on April 1.

Urban Outfitters launches 'Name Three Shirts' movement

Urban Outfitters said it is launching a global movement to "stand in solidarity against band-tee-shaming" by launching a new collection called "Name Three Shirts."

The t-shirt line "playfully mocks the gatekeeping attitudes of older generations who insist that band-shirt wearers should be required to name songs by those artists," the company said in a news release.

The line, which features revamped logos from bands such as The Grateful Dead, Joy Division and Led Zeppelin, is a "playful jab at the attitudes of older generations, and fights back against the misogynistic undertones of the infamous ‘name three songs’ line of questioning," Urban Outfitters said in the news release.

The collection of shirts is available online and in select Urban Outfitters stores starting April 1. You can shop the collection online here .

Auntie Anne's, Frontier Airlines collaborate on Pretzel Plane

Auntie Anne's pretzels and Frontier Airlines announced they have collaborated on the newest addition to Frontier's fleet: the Pretzel Plane.

According to a news release, the plane includes new in-flight entertainment featuring Auntie Anne's pretzels rolled seat-side, the "luxurious" smell of hot, fresh pretzels throughout the cabin and airplane-shaped pretzels if you're feeling hungry.

Moe's Southwest Grill, Sonic team up to introduce a Queso Slush

Two popular fast food chains announced a collaboration that is sure to be polarizing.

Moe's and Sonic announced a new beverage, the Queso Slush, a queso-flavored slushie. "The frozen goodness of a Sonic Slush meets the delicious flavor of Moe's queso."

Great app for travelers

Great to share tips with new friends around the globe, post details of your trips, block unwanted mail, and participate in contests and raffles. The only thing I hate is promotional content. Please just keep it short and have people inbox you because we have to scroll down long adds a few times to go to the next post.

Love the idea of this app, but BEWARE

I love the idea of coming together and talking about traveling. The concept for this app is solid and it’s well put together. Beware: Most conversations start off as expected, and then by message three it’s 3/5 times someone trying to get you into crypto and forex trading. I’m so sick of it and will stop using the app for this reason. They want you to send them $500-$2000 so they can trade for you, making a 15% commission, claiming to make well over your investment. True or not, this is a TRAVEL app! It’s okay to talk about what you do and how that allows you to travel, but these aggressive sales pitches need to go. Also, women beware there are still a lot of creeps and people misusing the app. At the same time there are many travelers and I love seeing the pictures. If you stick to the posts and comments then you may have a better experience. I think this is a promising idea, but the human factor killed it for me.

Video length.

It would be nice if we could upload videos over 1 minute. It’s very trash that you can only upload videos ranging from 10-40 seconds please update that. Also stop rewarding points to people who steal pictures off of google and post them to get likes, there’s no originality in that and they get more points than you when they don’t ever actually travel and do anything. If that’s the case I’d just go find a picture of the sun and post that everyday.

CBP Announces Trusted Traveler Programs Fee Changes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today an upcoming fee change for some of its most popular Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP).

On April 2, a final rule was published in the Federal Register , harmonizing the fees for the NEXUS , Global Entry, and SENTRI programs, better reflecting the program costs. The new fees, which have not been updated in over 15 years, will go into effect October 1, 2024. As these programs have matured and expanded, updating the fee structures is critical to the continuation and management of the programs.

Once the rule goes into effect, applicants under the age of 18 will be exempt from the application fee when a parent or legal guardian is already a member of, or concurrently applying for NEXUS, SENTRI, or Global Entry. SENTRI, which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States using dedicated primary lanes at Southern land border ports, will move from an “a la carte” fee structure to a uniform fee of $120, which will be collected in full when each application is submitted. The fees for NEXUS, a joint program managed by CBP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that allows dedicated processing between the U.S. and Canada, will increase from $50 to $120, and Global Entry fees will increase from $100 to $120.

TTP supports CBP’s mission of securing U.S. borders while facilitating lawful travel and trade. Travelers must be pre-approved for TTP. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before enrollment. While a key goal of the programs is to expedite travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. To maintain a strict standard in establishing TTP members as low-risk travelers, any violation of a program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.
