The Best Way To Spend A Saturday!
I spent a week in Sonoma with my husband, sister, and brother in-law to ring in the New Year. The day we went on our bike tour was the best day of our trip, hands-down.
We booked our trip through their website and received a confirmation email right away. Since we were traveling from the east coast, they made sure to let us know the importance of wearing multiple layers, and bringing biking gloves if we had our own. The night before our tour, Hunt sent me a text message to explain the meeting place, just north of the Plaza.
Everything about this tour was just wonderful - we learned the history of the area, as Hunt is a local. He was very knowledgeable, accommodating, and had a great sense of humor; our group loved him! The four of us all vary in our amount of regular exercise, though we consider ourselves generally healthy, active adults. The pace was perfect for everyone, and the wineries we visited were excellent.
I highly recommend this tour as a must! We plan on booking another tour with them (perhaps the full day) the next time we return.

Luxury Bike Tours: An Insider’s View of Sonoma County
Think of these bike tours as a rolling theaters of wine country life that change with the seasons, rather than set point-to-point trips. We offer a hands-on opportunity to discover all the hidden adventures, wine tastings at family owned wineries, gourmet treats (think regionally inspired, locally grown cuisine at Michelin restaurants) & unique events that Sonoma County has to offer. All of that…with none of the hassles. (Private and Custom Trips are available. Contact us for details.)
MEET THE FOUNDERS AND HOSTS
Sonoma on a Bike was co-founded by Randy Johnson, CEO of Getaway Adventures bike tours since 1991, a bike and wine aficionado and passionate explorer of Sonoma County for over two decades. The other Founder was at one point the managing director of Butterfield and Robinson and brought with him numerous insights into the world of luxury travel. We thank him for bringing great passion and luxury travel experience in helping us create a one of a kind travel vacation, and we wish him well.
Sonoma on a Bike tours are now lead by Randy and his senior staff, think of them as your “experience editors” who extract only the best of Sonoma for you to enjoy.
The Journey
MODERATE | 6 Days/5 Nights
You can expect an amazing itinerary of experiences while biking the region’s beautiful country roads. You might find yourself face-to-face with a herd of goats, while sampling the artisan cheese maker’s wares. Or enjoying an elegant lunch with world-class wines, created by the chef at a hidden estate. Depending on the season, you might picnic under 1400-year-old redwoods, or experience a crab fishing expedition … up close and personally.
But it isn’t a tour for everyone. In fact, we have limited seats. It’s designed for those who like to savor a bike tour with all their senses fully engaged. We encourage you to take the time to come and breathe…and take in the beauty we’ve found in the lush landscapes of Sonoma County, with it’s vineyards, valleys, vistas, hills, mountains, parks, rocky coastline, crashing waves, farmland, and forests (including those majestic and magnificent redwoods). It’s a slow, sensual trip. And if that sounds somewhat provocative, and possibly a little self-indulgent, so be it. It’s a gift to be given, and shared, with someone you love – including yourself.
So come discover all this and more, as we journey through Sonoma County’s beautiful appellations.

Each Day in Sonoma
What better way to begin your trip than by biking through a few of the most celebrated vineyards in Northern California? We’ll stop for a few wine tastings so you can judge for yourself which you like the best. Later that day, we’ll introduce you to a town voted by Fodor’s as “one of the 10 best small towns in America”.
This day you experience, first hand, the world-acclaimed wine growing appellations that are part of the Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. You’ll get a taste (or two) of why these areas are famous for such amazing, award-winning wines. Of course, there’s also time to visit some hidden treasures along the way.
Choose the Epic “Tour de Sonoma” Ride! We ride up to the Geysers (58 miles, 4500′ elevation gain) Santa Rosa Cycling Club’s top ten local rides.
We follow the Russian River to a magnificent forest of 1,400-year-old coastal redwoods. After lunch, we’ll head to the coast, home of fiercely independent and hardworking fishermen … and totally relaxed sea lions, both of whom are experts at catching the region’s succulent salmon, oysters, abalone and Dungeness crab. Of course, we’ll make sure you get your share of that bounty, too.
Choose the Epic “Tour de Sonoma” Ride! Ride 90 miles of Levi Leipheimer’s Training Ride. Now that is Epic!
Biking through the historic and charming town of Bodega — also home of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” — we continue onward to visit destinations that are beloved by those in the know. The rewards may be fresh hot cinnamon bread straight from wood fired brick ovens, a cheese artisan and his goats, a fantasy street peopled by the creations of one gifted artist or have a chance to discover the Barlow, home to food producers, wine makers, brewers, distillers, and artists.
Choose the Epic “Tour de Sonoma” Ride! We ride up and see the spectacular views of Coleman Valley Rd – a leg of the 2013 Amgen Tour Of California
This day’s ride will take you to the Valley of the Moon, which is less exotic but even more spectacular than the name implies. Jack London called it home, leaving behind buildings created in a mix of iconic early 20th century architecture, as well as acres of trails and breathtaking vistas of the majestic Sonoma Mountain. Our final night calls for a special celebratory dinner.
Choose the Epic “Tour de Sonoma” Ride! We ride Trinity Rd to Napa – a leg of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California
Before saying good-bye, you’ll have time to create your own morning itinerary. You can go for one last amazing bike ride, pop into the one-of-a-kind boutique shops found inside the old adobe storefronts on the plaza, tour General Vallejo’s historic home; or just sit with your coffee in any of Sonoma’s beautiful sunlit courtyards. We’ll have everything taken care of for your departure. All you’ll need do is pack.
Choose the Epic “Tour de Sonoma” Ride! We ride up and around Mt Tamalpais in Marin County. The most spectacular view of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area!

We’ll be cycling over rolling hills to flat, coastline roads; but we can also offer more challenging routes for those who ask. - Chelsbythesea 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Bike Rental Service in Sonoma Definitely one of the best things we did in Sonoma! The woman who gave us the intro spiel went above and beyond. She anticipated every possible point of confusion on the trail we might have, and not only talked us through it, but also showed us images of exactly what we should expect to see. She also knew precisely the thoughts/doubts we were going to have actually riding the tandem and preemptively explained those too! She is one of the most articulate communicators I have met. The biking was fantastic, the trails and roads were quiet and easy to navigate. I highly recommend. PS. If you're thinking about it, go for the tandem! I haven't laughed like that in some time. And no falls. Read more Written April 19, 2024

We rented bikes to travel to Hamel and Abbot's Passage wineries. We also biked to the town of Glen Ellen, which I'm not sure I recommend because of the limited bike lanes. However, biking on the side streets and through the vineyards was an ideal way to get around while tasting wine! I think you could also make it to BR Cohn and Little Vineyards if you bike on dirt paths versus the road. Read more Written November 6, 2023

Sonoma & Napa Valley Bike Tour
Price: $2,895+
Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights
Level: Novice / Intermediate
Terrain: Rolling / Hilly
With great weather, breathtaking scenery and over 500 vineyards, Sonoma and Napa Valley are a cyclist’s paradise. You’ll find terrain suitable for all abilities, just one of the reasons Bicycling Magazine described pedaling here as “the perfect cycling vacation.” Off the bike you’ll be treated to wine tastings, world-class cuisine and delightful accommodations. Our Sonoma & Napa Valley Bike Tour gives you the best of both worlds in California’s world-renowned wine region.
Day 1: Biking to Bodega Bay (31 miles) After pickup in San Francisco, you’ll be shuttled to the pastoral, ranching part of Sonoma County near the coast. After a brief orientation, you pedal along a favorite route past an incredible local bakery known for their delectable bready treats (don’t worry, celiacs, they have two kinds of gluten-free scones, so you can enjoy too). The reward today is a sweet climb and descent along Coleman Valley Road, which on sunny days offers an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. We’ll end up at our hotel for the night and the first of many great meals together. Meals included: Dinner
Day 2: Biking among Redwoods (25, 45 or 60 miles, Hiking – 2 miles) After breakfast you’ll head up along the rugged Pacific Coast and along the Russian River into the heart of the redwoods. You’ll savor a visit to a state park that includes 1,400-year-old trees that tower over 300 feet, creating an enchanting ambience. If you choose to cycle after lunch, you’ll continue up the Russian River to Healdsburg. En route, you’ll pass many wineries on quiet roads. Today’s itinerary includes a wine tasting at one of the area’s best wineries. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Biking Dry Creek (22 or 55 miles) How much you cycle today is – as always – up to you. You may choose to spend more time exploring the charming town of Healdsburg, but if you’d rather, you can spend more time riding the Dry Creek Valley. From here you’ll look out across acres of vines with the Mayacamas Mountains framing the scene. In short, you’ll enjoy some truly classic wine country riding on lightly trafficked roads where there seems to be a winery every half mile. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 4: Biking Alexander Valley (21 or 47 miles) Today you’ll bike the Alexander Valley, Knights Valley and Northern Napa. You’ll find many opportunities to visit famous wineries along the way. Indeed, you’ll savor a gourmet picnic lunch overlooking the vineyards of one such oasis before touring the winery. You’ll stay the next two nights in the quaint Napa County town of Calistoga known for its boutique shops and excellent restaurants. Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch
Day 5: Biking Napa Valley (40 or 71 miles) This morning you’ll take to the Silverado Trail which affords a great view across the Napa Valley as well as being home to some of the best known wineries in the area. You’re welcome to continue on a more extensive ride, but we encourage you to relax with an optional spa treatment for which Calistoga is famous. Choose from massage, hydrotherapy, mud baths, facials and more. Tonight, you’ll enjoy recalling the stories of the week with the rest of the group over your farewell dinner. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 6: Biking Crystal Springs Loop (18 miles) Today’s ride is a short loop past some of the smaller wineries of Napa. Of course, you can choose to sleep in and relax or enjoy another chance to explore town. Either way you’ll have some time to get ready and pack up before being shuttled back across the Golden Gate Bridge to downtown San Francisco. Meals included: Breakfast
Bodega Bay Lodge – 1 night Poised atop a tranquil bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Bodega Bay Lodge reflects the wild beauty of this romantic region and offers an array of incredible things to do in Sonoma. Watch the fishermen ply the bay for the day’s catch. Spot migrating whales in the waves. Scout for rare birds in a location prized by the Audubon Society and Alfred Hitchcock.
h2hotel – 2 nights Glimpse the undulating “Green Roof” of h2hotel and you’ll know you’ve arrived to the charming historic town of Healdsburg, where h2hotel is rooted. To the heart of Northern Sonoma Wine Country, which unfolds just outside its doors. To one of our 36 eco-chic rooms – all with private balconies or patios; a simple, organic aesthetic; and creative amenities – that’s just waiting for you.
Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa – 2 nights Every great journey needs a worthy destination. Welcome to the hoteliers’. They fell in love with a 1940’s roadside motel (formerly the Sunburst Calistoga) perfectly placed at the head of the Silverado Trail, in the heart of California’s most scenic wine region. They cleaned her up and gave her new life as the Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa – an epic ode to the Great American Road Trip of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Framed by vineyards and bike trails, and with pools fed by geothermal waters flowing underneath their grounds, their stylish Mid-Century Modern digs are the perfect foundation for those looking to find their next great adventure from the perfect home base. What Guests are Saying
There is no better way to enjoy this beautiful region than on this Trek trip. The daily rides are varied and all show a unique part of wine country. Our stops were well chosen and our meals were worthy of the effort made that day. As on my previous Trek trip, our Guides were positive, engaging and ready at all times for the unexpected. Overall, a great week!

We took this trip for our 30 year anniversary and it was the best decision by far! Not only do you get to meet new people and form great friendships but you also get to do and see things from a totally different perspective! We were nervous about the rides but the guides were so supportive and enthusiastic and encouraging! Never did they treat me like I couldn't do it! I won't lie... some of the rides were tough but we did them and we felt great afterwards! Also you burn so many calories you don't have to feel guilty about what you eat! BIG PLUS bc I love to eat. The food was great, the company was fantastic and the rides were unbelievably beautiful! Trust me, you will not be disappointed! You won't see this side of wine country in a car! We will definitely be doing another trip very soon!! Miss you Sarah, Levi, Dan, and Riley!!

Most cycling tours also offer snacks and drinks all the time. But beer, sunscreens, water bottles filled up without asking, water bottles moved under shades, luggage carried to our rooms? It was five stars service all the way.

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your California Wine Country Bike Tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland International Airport (OAK). You could also fly into Sacramento International Airport (SMF).
The easiest way to arrive in Healdsburg is to book your flight to the Santa Rosa Airport (STS) and take a taxi for about $30. Car rental agencies from the San Francisco Airport (SFO) are currently only offering vehicle drop off to Santa Rosa. There is also car and limo service available at SFO for approximately $275 to get you to Healdsburg if you prefer.
Your Trek Travel guides will meet you in the lobby of the Harmon Guest House (227 Healdsburg Ave, Healdsburg, CA 95448) at 9:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a round of introductions, your Trek Travel guides will discuss bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding through the wine country. They’ll spend some time familiarizing you with the Trek bicycle you’ll be riding and will make sure that you and your bike are the perfect fit before cycling to a picnic lunch and a tasting.
If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Harmon Guest House (707-431-8220), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.

Sharing the joy that comes with wow moments
Trek Travel guides are dedicated to making moments that last a lifetime, and we invite you to thank them with a trip gratuity. These are customary and at your own discretion, to recognize service, hospitality, and the little extras that surprise and delight. For this Signature trip, we recommend between $200-$250 per guest and, of course, you may choose to give more if your guides made your trip an unforgettable experience.
Like everything else about your vacation, the Trek Travel team is here to make this experience easier for you. While local currency is preferred, you may also tip through the following options:
Via PayPal (please have this account set up in advance when possible) or with your guest services representative on the phone before or after the trip.
Gratuities will be divided among the guide team, so feel free to leave your gratuity with whomever you choose at the end of your trip.
You cannot put a price on a wow . But you can show your thanks for an exceptional experience.

Start your California Wine Country cycling trip in Santa Rosa then transfer to the start of your ride in the Dry Creek Valley, home to the world’s best Zinfandel. Country roads are sprinkled with smaller, privately owned wineries you might stop to visit.
Ride through Chalk Hill to the Alexander Valley. Expansive vineyards line the hillsides as you make your way to a picnic lunch at one of the region’s most beautiful wineries.
Follow the lush Russian River Valley to the Pacific Ocean. Picnic under a grove of ancient redwood trees, some over 300 feet tall and 1400 years old.
Begin your day with an unforgettable walk along a grassy headland surrounded by pounding surf. Look for deer roaming the fields and sea lions or gray whales in the waters below before a breathtaking spin down the stunning Pacific coastline.
Country roads will convince you that this peaceful corner of the county is one of California’s best kept secrets for bicycling. Expansive views, rolling farmland, and groves of eucalyptus offer new landscapes to experience. Explore the town of Occidental or relax in your hot tub before the farewell dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.
Spend a leisurely morning riding the back roads of the world-famous Russian River Valley where the Pinot Noir is among the world’s finest. Toast to the week’s adventures during a farewell picnic lunch and tasting at a lovely winery. We will transfer you back to Santa Rosa.

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
California Wine Country is a popular destination for cyclists and drivers alike, who’ve had to deal with increasing traffic congestion along the region's main thoroughfares over the years. Backroads strives to find quiet, off-the-beaten track routes, but due to the area's geography and the amount of ground we cover, there are routes on this trip with sections that follow more heavily trafficked roads. We’ll alert you in advance so you can bypass these areas in the shuttle, if you choose

SELF GUIDED TOUR OF SONOMA VALLEY
EXPLORE WINE COUNTRY AT YOUR OWN PACE
Our regularly scheduled Sonoma lunch tours travel to some of the most outstanding wineries in the Sonoma area, revealing the history and beauty of the countryside on quiet roads. Each Sonoma bike tour is led by a local tour guide who is well versed in local history, wine knowledge, and cycling.
Our leisurely ride starts with a quick familiarization of our bikes and an introduction to Sonoma’s History, then we’re off. The first stretch (always the longest) takes us down quiet country roads, surround by the natural beauty of Sonoma and its best attractions. We’ve chosen wineries that are rich in history, full of character, and produce premium wines that are hard, if not impossible, to find outside of Sonoma. Our gourmet picnic style lunch will be held at the second winery stop. It’s prepared for us using local products whenever possible. All tours are flexible and are open to last minute suggestions by riders.
