Culture and customs.

Spain today is made up of 17 distinct autonomous communities, a product of the region’s history as a land of diverse tribes, kingdoms, and cultures. Each has its own traditions, cuisines, and customs shaped by the extensive war, invasion, immigration, and trade that the region has seen over the past few thousand years. From the Moors to the Romans, the British to the Portuguese, modern Spain is a product of both its   geographic neighbors   and the far-flung lands it conquered as a colonial superpower.

Spaniards are known, perhaps above all else, for their passion – for food, politics, partying, and life in general. This is the home of vibrant fiestas, fierce independence movements, flashy flamenco, worker uprisings, and the grand architectural remnants of a lavish and bloated empire.

Roman Catholicism is deeply entrenched in society, and as such Christian holidays like Easter and Christmas are widely observed. Additionally, different patron saints are honored in regional areas throughout the year, with small cities and villages celebrating their saints with bonfires, feasts, and parades.

From visionary architects to painters, controversial film directors to literary greats, Spain has a strong creative tradition evident in Gothic cathedrals, abstract art, and surreal film.

History and government

There is evidence of human habitation in the area now known as Spain dating as far back as 32,000 years ago. Pre-historic cultures likely existed as disparate tribes across the region until the Iron Age, when emerging groups like Iberians, Celtiberians, and Greeks began to exercise more formal control over certain areas.

The Romans arrived in 206 BC and spent hundreds of years systematically conquering the region before ruling uninterrupted for almost 500 years.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, various Muslim and Christian conquerors spent the next 700 years struggling for full control of the region. The last Muslim city, Granada, fell under the control of the Christian Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon in 1492, ending the last period of Muslim rule in Spain to this day.

Spain as a global empire

The Kingdom of Spain was unified under Christian rule in 1512 and began expanding at a ferocious pace. The far-reaching colonization that saw Spain conquer land on almost every continent earned it the title of the first ‘global empire’.

With access to the natural resources and human labor extracted from its colonies, Spain continued to balloon in power and influence until the 17th century. At this point, lavish construction and out-of-control spending, as well as the growing influence of other global powers, caused the empire to stall.

By the 18th century, the Kingdom of Spain was struggling. An invasion from Napoleon’s France, royal infighting, and various successful independence movements among colonies were the final death blows delivered to the ailing empire.

20th century

The early 20th century was a tumultuous time for Spain. Between 1918 and 1920, influenza killed an estimated 250,000 people in Spain alone. The nation oscillated between monarchy and short-lived stints as a republic. Attempted coups were frequent as left-wing and right-wing struggled for power, with powerful anarchist and fascist movements emerging, often in reaction to each other.

In 1936 the right-wing Nationalists (led by military general Francisco Franco Bahamonde AKA Franco) overthrew the government in a coup. A three-year civil war began for control of the country. At least 350,000 Spaniards died during the war, which ended with Franco’s victory and ascension to the dual roles of Head of State and Commander-in-Chief. Franco controlled Spain through a rigid totalitarian regime until his death in 1975. His legacy today is mixed, notable for the brutal repression of dissenters but also for an improved economy.

After Franco’s death, Spain transitioned to a democracy, holding its first free elections in almost 40 years in 1979. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the government was controlled alternately by socialist, conservative, and populist parties.

Though power has continued to swing between conservative and socialist governance, Spain today is relatively politically stable and home to a thriving democracy.

Remarkably, centuries of Catholic supremacy and enforced cultural hegemony under Franco’s dictatorship haven’t been able to stamp out a spirit of counterculture and rebellion. In general, public engagement in social and political issues is high, and public protest is common.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you’re sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from in every part of the world.

An abundance of fresh seafood and produce, a long wine-making tradition and diverse culinary influences from the former colonies make for a vibrant food culture. You can find delicious delicacies everywhere from bars to restaurants, cafes, street fiestas, and markets across the country. Savor the cuisines of Northern Spain on our  10 day Northern Spain Real Food Adventure  or taste your way through two countries on our  17 day Spain & Portugal Real Food Adventure.

Plant-based dining in Spain

Vegetarians certainly won’t go hungry in Spain. And while vegans might need to do a little detective work, there’s still a lot on offer if you know where to look.

Vegetarian options can be found in the vast majority of bars, restaurants, cafes, and markets. Vegan travelers will find major cities like Madrid and Barcelona are packed with vegan-friendly (and just straight-up vegan) restaurants. Outside of the big cities, it starts to get a little trickier. The safest option is to make the local market your first port of call in each destination to stock up on fresh fruit, vegetables, and bread. In eateries, vegans should keep an eye out for gazpacho (tomato soup), crema de verduras (vegetable soup), and basic ensaladas (salads) which are likely to be vegan. To be sure they won’t come served with meat on top (which can happen even when it isn’t listed as an ingredient) order them ‘sin jamon y sin huevo’ – without ham or eggs.

Your local leader will be able to help you navigate the menu and find plant-based dining options.

Must-try dishes and drinks in Spain

  • Paella This delectable rice dish is served throughout Spain and comes in many different ways. The mixed version (with chorizo, mussels, and prawns) is the most popular internationally, but if we have to recommend just one it’s got to be the original Valencian version – with rabbit, chicken, and butter beans.
  • Albondigas This tapas staple of meatballs swimming in a spicy tomato sauce is a classic. Typically made from a combination of veal and pork mince, the dish is simple to make and even easier to eat, particularly when washed down with a glass of tempranillo.
  • Croquettes Another tapas favorite, this time one that vegetarians can easily get behind. These delightful little balls of fried bechamel come with a number of fillings, from beef and ham to broccoli and goat’s cheese.
  • Sangria Jugs filled with chunks of apple, lemon, and orange in chilled red wine are the perfect accompaniment to a golden Spanish sunset. Sangria is a well-known ticket to extended late-night revelry, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.
  • Calamares a la Romana This dish of crispy, deep-fried calamari is popular in coastal regions like Barcelona. Eat a plate of it at a beachside restaurant or head to a bar and include it in your tapas mix.
  • Churros For a sugar hit, try Spain’s version of the doughnut. Churros are sticks of deep-fried dough, dipped in chocolate for good measure! Find them at open-air food stalls and cafes.
  • Jamon Spain is famous for its cured ham, the legendary jamon. You’ll find salty jamon hanging in shop windows, on display at markets, and featured on menus throughout Spain.
  • Gazpacho For a fresh and healthy Spanish dish, you can’t go past gazpacho. The raw, chilled tomato soup is a cool answer to Spain’s summer heat.
  • Tortilla de Patatas Potato tortilla (or Spanish omelette) is a slice of authentic Spanish culinary tradition. A simple dish that’s often served as part of a tapas spread, it’s a great option for vegetarians wanting something hearty.
  • Vino tinto We know what you’re thinking. Isn’t it a bit of a cop-out to call ‘red wine’ a must-try? Not when the diversity and quality of the drop are this good. There are so many must-sip varieties in Spain it’s hard to go wrong, but here’s a little list to get you started – tempranillo, rioja, priorat, and toro. Go!

Geography and environment

Located in southwestern   Europe , Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula and shares borders with   France ,   Andorra ,   Portugal ,   Morocco   , and Gibraltar, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The region’s topography is a blend of mountains, low-lying plains, and a long coastline.

The northern Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa are two northern mountain ranges that draw travelers from the continent and around the world in search of active adventure. The Picos de Europa is smaller and popular with hikers, while the powdery slopes of the Pyrenees attract hordes of skiers during an impressively long snow season.

Spain’s coastline and islands are world-renowned. The Mediterranean Coast, in particular, is incredibly long and beautiful, featuring a mix of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and protected bays. Islands like Tenerife, Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca are among the most popular with tourists chasing sunshine and good times.

While many know its beaches, fewer travelers are aware that southern Spain is home to the only real desert in Europe – the Tabernas. The barren badlands were the setting for a number of Western films in the 1960s and 1970s.

However, most of the countryside in Spain’s central and northern regions offers green valleys, olive groves, rolling farmland, and rivers.

Home of cult fast fashion brand ZARA, Camper shoes, Lladro porcelain, Mango clothing, and some of the best wine and olive oil in the world, Spain’s consumer goods may not be cheap but the quality is high if you stick to authentic brands and hand-made goods. If you are chasing a bargain, flea markets are abundant in Spain and make for a great way to mingle with locals while you look for a souvenir. If you’re spending a few days in a city, ask a local (or if you’re traveling with Intrepid, ask your leader) where and when you can find the local second-hand market. Popular items to look for are leather goods like bags, belts and boots, Moorish mementos and printed fans.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events

Valencia’s Las Fallas is a sizzling cacophony of colorful firecrackers, smoky bonfires, roaring rockets, and massive effigies. Celebrated each year in honor of Valencia’s patron saint, this is a week of fiery fun and extensive late-night partying.

Every summer the Spanish town of Haro explodes into a ‘Wine War’, known to locals as Batalla del Vino. Unforgiving residents pump red wine out of water pistols, hoses, and other vessels in this grand example of wine warfare. Be warned: no one is spared – this is not a spectator sport!

La Tomatina

A relative newcomer to the Spanish festival scene,   La Tomatina   draws in travelers, tourists, and the world’s media who come to see ripened tomatoes splattered across the city of Bunol. Thousands of people cram into the narrow town plaza to smash tomatoes into each other – a chaotic, strange, and super fun experience.

The Holy Week

As a predominantly Catholic country, Easter is a huge deal in Spain. But even if you’re not a believer, the Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a fascinating event to experience. Each region has its own unique traditions, but all involve lavish processions, incredible outfits, and torrijas (fried sweet bread).

Fiesta de San Isidro

Fiesta de San Isidro  is Madrid’s largest festival to honor San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of Madrid who was believed to be a miracle worker in the 12th century. Over the years, the festival has evolved into an all-encompassing celebration of Madrid’s traditions and modern culture, from folk music and dancing to delicious street food.

When is the best time to visit Spain?

Due to its size, Spain has a varied climate, but for the most part, you can expect Mediterranean temperatures along the coast, with hot, sunny summers (and peak tourism!) and colder, rainy winters .

On the east coast of Spain, major cities like Barcelona can be very busy during summer, so if you’d prefer to share the streets with more locals and fewer tourists you might find the ‘low season’ of November to February is the best time to visit this region.

What's the weather like in Spain?

Spain is known to be one of the warmest and sunniest countries in Europe regardless of the season, but weather patterns differ depending on where you are: you can expect mild summers and cold winters in the northern regions and hot summers and mild winters in the south.

Do I need a visa to travel to Spain?

Citizens of the European Union and Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are not required to obtain a visa but must abide by local residency requirements if they plan to stay for more than 90 days.

Travelers from Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan and more can visit Spain for 90 days in a six-month period with no visa, as long as they have no plans to work.

Travelers visiting from Cambodia, Ecuador, India, Nepal and other countries must obtain a visa from the Spanish consulate or embassy in their region – allow at least two weeks for it to be issued.

The information is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores and hotels in Spain. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Spain?

ATMs are very common in Spain, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What public holidays are celebrated in Spain?

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 6 Jan: Epiphany
  • April or May: Maundy Thursday/Good Friday
  • 1 May: Labor Day
  • 15 Aug: Assumption of Mary
  • 12 Oct: Fiesta Nacional de Espana

  • 25 Dec: Christmas Day

Is Spain safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Overall, Spain is a welcoming and safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Same-sex marriage is legal, and laws exist to protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals to live free from of discrimination (though employment discrimination laws do not yet protect transgender individuals).

Public opinion on LGBTQIA+ individuals is relatively positive. Though LGBTQIA+ travelers may encounter more conservative views in rural areas and small towns, the risk of experiencing overt discrimination in Spain is very low for travelers.

Transgender individuals and gender non-conforming folks are widely accepted in Spain, though gender identity-based discrimination still occurs.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Spain accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Spain is a mixed bag when it comes to access for travelers with disabilities. While some regions like Catalonia are proactively working to meet the needs of travelers with disabilities, others may prove challenging for travelers with mobility and/or visual impairments.

Barcelona is notable as one of the most wheelchair-friendly cities in Europe. All of Barcelona’s major sights are accessible for wheelchair users, and some beaches have all-terrain wheelchairs for free hire as well as boardwalks that extend to the water. The vast majority of metro stations and all buses are accessible to folks with reduced mobility. Many train stations in Barcelona have tactile strips to direct folks with vision impairments to platforms, ticket machines, and elevators. Ticket machines and elevators have speech options in a variety of languages.

Madrid is also a city committed to accessible travel, with metro and bus systems that can be used by people with mobility and visual impairments and many accessible monuments.

Spain’s national parks are somewhat accessible, as they are commonly outfitted with accessible interpretation centers and viewpoints. The trails of the Picos de Europa are well-maintained and non-reflective, so may be accessible to people with visual impairments (depending on the severity of the impairment).

Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should familiarise themselves with the Spanish equivalent of the batteries their devices need.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What are some useful Spanish phrases to learn?

You don’t need to spend hours trying to learn Spanish before your trip... unless you want to, that is! The following phrases should help you get by:

  • Good morning –  Buenos días
  • Good afternoon –  Buenas tardes
  • Good evening –  Buenas noches
  • How are you? –  ¿Cómo está usted?  (formal)
  • How are you? –   ¿Cómo estás?  (informal)
  • What are you doing? –  ¿Qué haces?
  • Thank you –  ¡Gracias!
  • Nice to meet you –  Mucho gusto
  • Please –  Por favor

Does my trip to Spain support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Spain directly support our foundation partner, Open Arms.

Open Arms protects people fleeing from their home country to reach Europe by sea. Donations from our trips help them protect immigrants abandoned in international waters fleeing war, persecution and poverty. They collaborate with healthcare and frontline research teams to support immigrants through health emergencies and work in their countries of origin to strengthen communities and build alternatives to irregular or unsafe immigration.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Spain Tours — Highlights and Vacation Tips

Tossa de Mar, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain

Unparalleled Roman ruins, stunning Islamic architecture, a wealth of history of great civilizations, unique culture, and edgy creativity are what define any trip to Spain. The country is full of rich and diverse landscapes. The Pyrenees are as majestic as any other mountain on the continent and are famous as one of the best-hiking destinations in Europe . Madrid and Barcelona always present a grand vibe and an incredible experience. The charming coves of the Mediterranean will truly make you fall in love and there are always quaint little villages that present an old-world European way of life to choose from.

Spain Trip Highlights

  • Dodge tomatoes at the annual food fight festival, La Tomatina, in Buñol
  • See all of Gaudi’s distinctive architecture, from Park Güell in Barcelona to El Capricho in Comillas
  • Grab a bite to eat at Mercat de la Boqueria, just off La Rambla in Barcelona
  • Discover the world-renowned art, fashion, and architecture of Madrid
  • Drink traditional Spanish red sangria
  • Visit the sarcophagus of Christopher Columbus at the Catedral de Sevilla

Spain Vacation Tips

  • Spaniards are incredibly intimate and like to tell it as it is. Expect to be greeted with a kiss, even by strangers, and it’s not unusual to be interrupted as you speak.
  • When dining out with friends, always opt for some paella . Arguably the most popular dish in Spain, it’s often cheaper to share by increasing the size of your paella than to order a separate meal.
  • If you want to see the inside of the Sagrada Familia, be sure to buy your tickets online before you go. Only a certain number of people are allowed inside each day, and tickets sell out days in advance.
  • Though there’s plenty to see on Spain’s mainland, its many islands are also worth visiting. Check out Ibiza for some incredible nightlife, Lanzarote for unique volcanic landscapes, or Fuerteventura for surfing.
  • Promptness isn’t exactly a value in Spain. Spaniards tend to be very laid back and arrive late.

Spain has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Spain before booking your Spain tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Spain, do check out our Spain Travel Guide for more information.

Destination Must-See's

Spain ms1

This enchanting seaside city with boundless culture is home to fabled architecture and a world-class drinking and dining scene. Barcelona's architectural treasures span 2,000-plus years. Towering temple columns, ancient city walls and subterranean stone corridors provide a window into Roman-era Barcino. Fast forward a thousand years to the Middle Ages by taking a stroll through the shadowy lanes of the Gothic quarter, past tranquil plazas and soaring 14th-century cathedrals. In other parts of town bloom the sculptural masterpieces of Modernism, a mix of ingenious and whimsical creations by Gaudí and his Catalan architectural contemporaries for which this city is so well known. Barcelona has also long-inspired artists, including the likes of Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, whose works are in bold display in the city's myriad museums.

Spain ms2

The capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain is Seville. Approximately 2,200 years old, the early origins of the city date back to the year 712. It is situated along the Guadalquivir River, which splits the city into two halves. Seville is famous for being the birthplace of the Flamenco dance. It is also known for its culture, monuments, traditions and artistic heritage.

Spain ms3

Spain’s capital city sits on the Manzanares River, just northeast of the center of the Iberian Peninsula. It is estimated that the origins of Madrid can be traced back to the 2nd century B.C. Madrid is home to the head of the Spanish government, the Spanish royal family and the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization. Madrid’s influence on politics, education, entertainment, fashion and culture make it one of the world’s major global cities.

Spain ms4

The Costa del Sol:

This “Sunny Coast” is the southernmost part of Spain stretching primarily along the calm and warm Mediterranean Sea. Its major province is Málaga, the home of Picasso. To the far west part of the Costa del Sol comes another body of water, the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. In the last province of the Costa del Sol lies the province of Cadiz. These provinces are most known for their golden sandy beaches, fresh Mediterranean seafood and relaxing environments and are especially home to vacationers during the warmer months.

Destination Must-Do's

Spain md1

Guggenheim Museum:

This museum of modern and contemporary art is located in northern Spain. The museum is built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao. The museum is one of several belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and features permanent and visiting exhibitions of works by Spanish and international artists. The museum was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. The museum was inaugurated on October 18, 1997 by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, who was the king of Spain at the time.

Spain md2

La Sagrada Familia:

Meaning the Holy Family, this modern structure is known as the church of the people, built by the people, with the money of the people. While it is not the cathedral of Barcelona, it is widely known due to its unique architecture and phenomenal design initiated by architect Antoni Gaudí. Work on the exploratory church began in 1882 and continue to this day, but with modern technology and the rising number of visitors and donations, the church’s completion date has rapidly become closer. The facades of the church are breathtaking in their intricate and artistic details, all of which were inspired by Gaudí.

Spain md3

The Alhambra:

This stunning palace and fortress complex is located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. The first palace on the site was built in the 11th century. Over the years it developed into a sprawling complex comprised of many structures. It is very well preserved and gives visitors a peek into Moorish culture. The Alhambra is part fortress, part palace, part garden and part government city. Many visitors come to Granada specifically to visit and see the Alhambra.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

sell 13 Day Spain 2024

13 Days / 11 Nights   Starting at $5750 PP (Land Rate)

VAMOS A ESPAÑA!

A 13-day deluxe, all-inclusive adventure to magical Spain. This is a deep-dive into the Iberian culture of Catholics & Moors... Foods & Wines ... Flamenco & Guitars... Horses & Bulls... Paella & Tapas...  First Class & Deluxe Hotels. This is also Perillo’s best overall travel value for 2024. Olé!

THURSDAY : It’s an overnight flight to Madrid, the capital city of sunny Spain, and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe—and the world!

Please remember to post your photos & activities on Facebook so your friends can follow along.

FRIDAY : Upon arrival, your tour director will be waiting to greet you. We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the airport to your hotel (it’s a short 10-mile ride from the airport to the hotel).

Madrid welcomes you with its friendly atmosphere. You’ll have some free time to settle in and relax before a panoramic sightseeing tour of Madrid.

You’ll see Retiro Park, Alcala Gate, Serrano´s street, Columbus Square. For those of you who love to shop, you’ll be happy to know that your hotel is situated in the heart of the downtown shopping district.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

SATURDAY : This morning we’ll visit the world-famous Prado Museum. We’ll get to see the masterpieces of Velasquez, Goya, El Grco, El Bosco, Murillo, Rubens and many more. Next, we’ll visit the ancient Austrian quarter and the famous Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s grand central square.

Next we will visit the magnificent Royal Palace (Palacio Real) made up of over 3000 rooms, one of the most beautiful Palaces in Europe. It ends with a red carpet leading to the King’s actual throne!

Enjoy the remainder of the day and evening on your own. Be sure to ask your tour leader for some restaurant suggestions.

SUNDAY : This morning we travel south to Andalucia, and will visit the ancient city of Toledo – the historical, cultural and religious heart of Spain. Due to the influence of its Islamic, Hebrew and Christian occupants, Toledo is known as the city of 3 cultures. We visit the Church of Santo Tome to see the famous El Greco painting “El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz.”.

Next, we visit the Synagogue as well as a factory creating Damascenes – intricate inlaid metallic artwork. A perfect souvenir to bring home! By now we’ll have worked up an appetite – we’ll enjoy a traditional Spanish lunch in a fine Toledo restaurant.

After lunch, we’ll make our way To Cordoba, we arrive to our beautiful boutique Hotel and have dinner in our hotel with fine Spanish wines.

MONDAY : We will visit Cordoba, one of the most beautiful and ancient cities of Andalucia. Every corner of this city is adorned with sweet smelling orange blossoms.

No monument is more iconic of Spain’s changing culture than the Mezquita, a former mosque that was transformed into a Catholic cathedral, which then resulted in Moorish and Gothic architecture all in one building.

Afterwards, we’ll stroll over to the Juderias Quarter (Jewish Quarter) with its beautiful cobblestone alleys filled with shops, tabernas and music.

Remainder of the Day at your own. Remember to ask your tour guide for Tapas suggestions.

TUESDAY : Today we’ll learn how to make the world famous “Paella” and then we’ll get to taste-test our own cooking.

Next, we motor to the amazing city of Granada, home of the world famous, and massive, Alhambra!  Tonight, we enjoy a relaxing dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

WEDNESDAY : Today we discover the marvels of the Alhambra, a summer palace built by the Moorish Kings. The Alhambra will remain etched in your memory forever!

Also included is a visit to the Royal Chapel, as well as a visit to the famous San Nicolas Mirador, to enjoy spectacular sunset views of the Alhambra.

Tonight, we thought you would like to enjoy dinner on your own. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant suggestions!

THURSDAY : An action-packed day! We will visit Jerez de la Frontera, well known for its wines, horses, and flamenco. We’ve reserved the best seats for you at the Royal Equestrian School “dressage” horse show.

Next, get ready for Bodegas Tradición—a winery producing world-class Sherry. Be careful—it’s strong!

Lucky for us, the vintner has his own, personal fine-art gallery filled with million-dollar Spanish masterpieces—including Picasso’s childhood art. After a light lunch, we drive to Seville, the capital city of the Andalucia Region.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

FRIDAY : After breakfast, we discover the marvelous city of Seville. We start by viewing Cartuja Island where Christopher Columbus lived while planning his voyage to “India”.

We’ll see Columbus’ ornate tomb inside the Seville Cathedral with its gothic Giralda Bell Tower. You’ll also see the statue of King Ferdinand who defeated the last Islamic rulers in Spain - also in 1492.

To this day, Spaniards argue over the more important figure in their history – Columbus or King Ferdinand? You’ll have to decide for yourself! Via the old Jewish District, we’ll visit the vast Plaza de España built for the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929.

We end our tour with an old-fashioned, 30-minute horse and buggy ride through the center of Seville!

Tonight we will attend an authentic "Flamenco Show" in a real Andalusian "Patio".  Dinner and wines will be served during the show. But be careful not to drink too much – you don’t want to end up being part of the show!

SATURDAY : Today, we will spend the afternoon at the Basilippo Olive Oil farm. Spain's olive oil is among the world's best, often referred to as “liquid gold”.

After a light lunch in the olive oil farm, we’re off to the airport for our quick flight to Barcelona. Upon arrival, we’ll go directly to our hotel to enjoy dinner and relaxation.

SUNDAY : It’s time for us to discover the fascinating seaside city of Barcelona.

We’ll visit the Columbus Monument, Plaza Cataluna and the historic buildings along Paseo de Grazia. Then we’ll have the opportunity to see the most visited bullring in Spain, and, Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece, the almost psychedelic Church of the Sagrada Familia.

Our day ends with a visit to the Basilica Santa Maria del Mar in the Gothic Quarter. Tonight, we’ll enjoy our final dinner together in a fine local restaurant with our new travel friends.

Don’t forget to exchange email addresses and make travel plans for the future. How about you all meet again on another Perillo Tour – to Italy or Hawaii!

MONDAY : Today we enjoy more of Gaudi’s amazing work. We visit his Casa Mila’, originally a private mansion, it resembles an undulating pastry made of concrete.

Next, we visit Gaudi’s colorful Park Güell, similar to “Main Street” in Disneyland but created 50 years earlier. We’ll end our visit atop Montjuic Mountain, with the best panoramic views of the city and harbor.

Tonight, you’ll enjoy your final evening on your own. Be sure to visit some last-minute shops for souvenirs!

TUESDAY : Today, we fly home full of happy memories and pictures to show our friends and family. For now, a warm hasta luego!

Welcome to Spain

When you travel to Spain with Tauck, you'll feel the passion of this sun-blessed country come to life in every destination visited – a fiesta where everyone seems to be invited.

Madrid, spain, art, history and so much more in spain's extraordinary capital city, madrid.

Founded more that a millennium ago as a Muslim fortress town, Spain's capital city, Madrid, is a cosmopolitan metropolis known for its incredible art collections, inventive cuisine, and lively nightlife. Visiting the city with Tauck, you'll discover grand avenues such as Gran Via and Castellana, and El Parque del Buen Retiro; walk with a local guide through Plaza Mayor and the Mercado de San Miguel; enjoy a guided visit to the Royal Palace (Palacio de Oriente); and tour one of the greatest museums of them all – the Museo del Prado, which opened its doors in 1819, created by King Ferdinand VII to promote Spanish art and display the Royal Collection. Today, the Prado is home to one of the finest collections of European art anywhere, including works by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Bosch, Rubens, Titian and others… and with Tauck, you'll explore it all with an art expert.

Cordoba, Spain

Explore the moorish influences and multicultural heritage of córdoba.

It may have begun life as a Roman settlement, but the Spanish city of Córdoba – in the southern province of Andalucia – first reached greatness as a Muslim stronghold and the capital of a Caliphate, and many of its Moorish influences remain to the day. Reclaimed by the Christian world during the 13th-century Spanish Reconquista, Cordoba has long been known as a multicultural melting pot and a center of Spanish intellectual life. Discover it with Tauck on a walking tour through its Jewish Quarter and a guided visit to the 8th-century Mezquita de Córdoba (La Mezquita) – once one of the world's largest mosques, and now a Roman Catholic cathedral. More than 1,200 years old, it's an iconic symbol of the city and its multicultural heritage.

El Palace Barcelona

A 20th-century classic reborn for the 21st.

Nearly a century after it opened in the heart of Barcelona near Las Ramblas – and soon became one of Spain's leading luxury hotels – the El Palace Barcelona emerges from an ambitious and comprehensive refurbishment designed to recapture the classic style and splendor of its greatest years. The hotel's public areas, presidential suites and standard rooms have been carefully restored with handmade carpets, restored antiques and exact replicas of objects such as lamps and curtains... and on the 7th floor, the romantic new Diana Garden sports more than fifty species of plants, fountains, pergolas and a pool, all inspired by the Barcelona of the 1920s.

Pintxos tasting tours

Sampling pintxos in bilbao and san sebastián.

Pintxos – the traditional tasty treats typically enjoyed as appetizers or snacks in bars throughout northern Spain and the Basque country – are so named for the "spike" (a skewer or a toothpick) that holds their ingredients to a slice of bread, and distinguishes them from their tapas cousins. You'll have opportunities to sample some of the best pintxos in town on tasting tours with local experts in Bilbao and San Sebastián.

January in Spain: From Festive Celebrations to Winter Fun

When people consider traveling to Spain, they often think about beautiful sunny, hot days ideal for sipping on a cool drink, languishing on the beach, and enjoying warm evening strolls. However, the climate in Spain is more than continually sunny.

With its varied terrain that includes deserts, forests, mountains, and plains, it is even possible to find snow in Spain, particularly if you visit Spain in December or January.

If you’re not a fan of hot temperatures, you may find January is a great time to visit Spain, allowing you to explore your favorite areas without baking in the hot sun. So, here we’ll explore the topic of Spain in January in more detail.

spain tours january 2024

Hi, we’re Timon & Filipa!

We travel across Spain in our motorhome, Speedy, and update TravelSpain24 with fresh content, practical tips, and personal stories from the road. Our goal is to help you experience Spain beyond the typical tourist trails.

Spain in January: The Weather

January Weather in Spain

Spain is the second largest country in Europe and has such varied terrain that the January weather can vary greatly. From milder winters in coastal and southern areas to colder temperatures in northern regions. This means that Spain’s climate can offer the ideal conditions for anyone.

If you’re interested in skiing, the January weather in Spain provides ample powder in the mountainous regions, particularly in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the south, the Pyrenees in Catalonia, and the northern region of Asturias. These areas provide some excellent winter sports, including snowboarding, sledding, and skiing, with some amazing resorts that cater to various budgets.

In these colder areas, there is also the opportunity to bundle up and explore the sights without the large crowds that you tend to see in Summer. Of course, there is also the possibility of calling into a bar or cafe for a warming drink or a shot of alcohol to ward off the cold.

If you don’t particularly relish the cold and want to escape the colder temperatures back home, the southern regions tend to have milder winters. Although the temperatures down south are far cooler compared to summer, it can be a nice change compared to the cold weather in northern Europe. Additionally, you can still get some very nice days with warm winter sunshine that makes walks on the beach very appealing.

It is important to remember that the winter weather in Spain will include more rainfall in almost every area. This can be a little surprising if you’ve previously only visited in summer. Depending on the area and current weather patterns, this could be anything from a brief, light shower that dissipates quickly to heavy rain setting in for the whole day and evening. So, you’ll need to remember to pack appropriate clothing.

Spain in January: Top Spanish Cities to Explore

Unless you plan on enjoying some winter sports, you’re unlikely to be looking for the coldest cities in Spain . However, January in Spain can be a great time to explore some wonderful cities. You can beat the crowds since January is not a popular month for tourists and enjoy lower prices.

While there are still festivals and attractions in winter, the rates for hotels, restaurants, and attraction tickets tend to be lower. This means that you can enjoy a different perspective of Spain compared to visiting in the summer months, particularly in several beautiful cities. These include:

1. Valencia

Valenca in January .Valencia historic downtown El Miguelete and Cathedral Micalet de la Seu in spain

The milder winters are one of the reasons why many expats consider living in Valencia year-round. The January weather in Valencia is typically pleasant, with rare instances of rain. However, it can get humid and windy, so you do need to be prepared for this with a light jacket.

Most days, there are pretty blue skies and sunshine that make it enjoyable to hit the beach or spend the day taking a citrus farm tour . Since the holiday season ends in Valencia on January 6th, you can get some great sale bargains if you’re interested in shopping.

However, if you’re prepared to visit towards the end of January, you could experience the celebrations for San Vicente Mártir. This is Valencia’s Patron Saint, and the celebrations include a procession with statues carried around the city and music. There are also the San Vincente Ferrer celebrations, with a procession featuring music, horse-drawn carriages, and candy being thrown to the crowds.

Monasterio de San Jeronimo, Granada in January

If you’re not a fan of high temperatures, January is one the best times to visit Granada , as the city typically experiences sweltering heat in summer. The average temperature in Granada in January is around 7ºC, making walking around and exploring the Alhambra and other sites pleasant.

Although the Alhambra has winter opening hours between October and March , they still allow plenty of time to stroll through the gardens and various exhibits.

Since it is less crowded in January, you can explore Granada on foot. You can stroll the hilly areas and quaint steep streets, with stops at some excellent restaurants, or take an authentic Spanish coffee to warm up.

To fully explore the historic Albayzin neighborhood, consider staying at an authentic hotel, such as the Hotel Santa Isabel La Real .

Renaissance church in the city of Malaga in January

The best time to visit Malaga is January if you still want to experience warm temperatures without the sweltering summer heat and crowds. You’ll still be able to enjoy average temperatures of 20ºC and the unique coastal vibe that is exclusive to the city.

You can visit the Picasso Museum in the city and stay in the nearby boutique hotel, the Hotel Larios Málaga . You can wander the harbor or lovely sandy beaches and enjoy food at some world-class restaurants.

If you want to explore outside Malaga, you can enjoy the glamour of the nearby town, Puerto Banos, or the delightful whitewash villages such as Mijas or Frigiliana.

Spain in January: Visit Smaller Towns

Of course, you don’t necessarily need to have a city break to enjoy Spain in January. There are a number of smaller towns that offer tranquility and distinct experiences. If you have previously only stayed in Spain at a summer beach resort, this can be a nice change of pace. If you’re looking to recharge your mental batteries after the hectic holiday season, you may want to consider the hidden charms of these smaller towns.

4. Júzcar

Picturesque hillside famous Juzcar town or Smurfs Village in January

Unlike the typical inland whitewash towns and villages, the buildings in Júzcar are all painted a brilliant blue. The reason for this was that the village was chosen as a location for filming the Los Pitufos or the Smurfs.

There are adventure sports , canyoning, hiking, and other ways that you can lose yourself in nature. You can even walk the tourist path of Route of Fray Leopoldo through fields of almond trees and other flora.

There are also some great sights to visit, including the Church of Santa Catalina, the Old Tin Factory, and the Mycological Museum.

5. Setenil de las Bodegas

White villages of the province of Cadiz, Setenil de las Bodegas in January

Setentil de las Bodegas in Cadiz is quite literally under a rock. The traditional white-washed houses are built into the surrounding cliffs, making it a magical and charming place to visit.

If you’re prepared to climb the steep paths and roads, Setenil has some amazing viewpoints or miradors that can provide you with views of the entire village and the valley below.

This unique characteristic is present in many homes and businesses, including the Bar La Escueva , where you can enjoy traditional Spanish dishes in the cozy cave-like setting.

If you visit Senetil, it is worth taking time to visit the Roman Ruins of Acinipio, approximately a 10-minute drive from the village. You should check the opening times, but the ruins are a hidden gem that is free to visit.

Old street in La Alberca, Salamanca in January

Alberca is a frozen-in-time medieval village located in Salamanca province. You can walk the village streets to experience an authentic settlement that has maintained its rights and customs. Almost all of the buildings date back to the 18th century.

Alberca has inspired great writers, including Cervantes citing the setting in Don Quixote or its use as a refuge for lovers by Lope de Vega .

Another quirk of the village is that it is expected to see a pig walking the streets. A piglet is released and cared for by all the villagers in early summer, but if you’re visiting on January 17th (San Anton), you can see the full-grown pig being drawn as a prize in an annual raffle.

Spain in January: Things To Do

As we’ve discussed, visiting Spain in January can be a different experience than holidaying in summer. However, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities that you can enjoy if you visit Spain in January.

1. Skiing and Snowboarding

Ski slopes of Pradollano in Sierra Nevada mountains in Spain in January

One of the most popular winter activities in Spain is skiing or snowboarding. If you’re looking for snow in Spain for your winter sports, your likely choice is the Sierra Nevada mountains .

Since this is a popular skiing destination, you don’t need to own your own equipment, as there are plenty of equipment rental options. The team can assist you with equipment rental if you stay in a hotel such as the Vincci Selección Rumaykiyya . You’ll have direct access to a ski lift and a free transport service to Pradollano.

While skiing is not one of the most popular sports in Spain , if you’re keen to try winter sports, the powder in Spain is excellent.

2. Exploring Gastronomy

Spanish Chef preparing Paella in January

Spain in January is the ideal time to explore the winter fare available across the various regions. There are a variety of dishes that can warm you up after a day of shopping, sightseeing, or skiing.

From Cocido madrileño, which includes a stew of potatoes, chickpeas, pork belly, and chorizo, to the superb seafood in Galicia, some fantastic winter warmer dishes exist. There are also options for vegetarian food in Spain , such as Sopa de Ajo (garlic soup) and Sopa de Lentejas (lentil soup.)

You could even take your gastronomy journey further with cooking classes in Madrid !

3. Cultural Immersion

A winter trip to Spain can also provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Spanish culture. Most museums and tourist attractions are open throughout the year but may have reduced opening hours in January. However, since Spain typically receives fewer foreign visitors in winter, you can avoid the massive lines you may have seen in peak tourist season.

There are some fantastic winter concerts and theater events. You could even enjoy traditional Spanish dances , such as the Flamenco shows in Barcelona .

Most cities have shows and events that you can enjoy in winter, and even in smaller towns and villages, there are festivals for Saints’ Days that can provide the opportunity to see processions, traditional dress, and music.

4. Wellness Retreats

Composition of spa treatment on table

Most of us start to feel a little weary in winter, but you can visit Spain to relax and recharge at various wellness retreats. Even if the weather outside is chilly, you can spend the day in a hot tub or receive a facial, massage, or wellness treatment.

Many of the most popular wellness resorts are in southern Spain, meaning you can enjoy milder weather and pleasant winter sunshine. Whether you are interested in yoga, want to lose those excess Christmas pounds, or simply relax, there are spa towns with facilities to suit your needs.

Spain in January: Festivals and Events

Spain is a Catholic country, so hundreds of festivals celebrate Saints’ Days, Patron Saints, and other religious holidays. Additionally, some other festivals and events celebrate the unique Spanish culture of each region and city. Some of the most popular events to attend in January include:

1. Three Kings Day

Roscón de Reyes (Spanish Kings' Cake), in January Spain

The Three Kings Day occurs at the Epiphany and represents when the three wise men visited Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Baby Jesus. In Spain, this is the biggest celebration for the Christmas period, where the people come out into the streets to participate in vibrant parades.

Children of all ages line the streets to watch the parade and catch candy thrown by the wise men. You can also enjoy Rosca de Reyes, which is a traditional cake only enjoyed at this time of the year.

If you want to see an extravagant Three Kings Day with the streets lined with lights, January is the best time to visit Madrid . It could also provide an answer to the question, is Barcelona worth visiting , if you were struggling to decide.

2. Jarramplas Festival

The Jarramplas Festival is a unique and traditional event that takes place in Piornal, Caceres. Each year, a teenager is chosen to dress up as a demonic cattle thief. The costumed protagonist is chased through the streets and pelted with turnips!

Fortunately, unlike the legendary figure who was deterred by angry locals when he tried to steal animals, the festival character wears an outfit of different fabrics over carbon fiber protection to protect him from the turnip-toting crowd.

If you visit the province Caceres in late January, you can visit Piornal and participate, flinging your own turnip at el Jarramplas.

3. San Sebastian Festival

Soldiers stand in formation during Tamborrada of San Sebastian in January Basque Country

If you enjoy festivals, then January is a great time to visit San Sebastian , as you can participate in one of the city’s most important celebrations. The Fiesta de San Sebastian takes place on January 20th, dating back to the 19th century to commemorate the city being set on fire by Napoleon’s army.

Today, men and women dress in traditional costumes and parade the streets with loud drums for a full 24 hours. This is a phenomenal event that is well worth a visit.

Spain in January: Costs and Planning

Although there is plenty to see, do, and experience in Spain in January, one of the greatest advantages is that it tends to be more budget-friendly. If you’ve ever looked at where to stay in Madrid , Barcelona, or other popular cities in peak season, you will likely see that even modest accommodation can be costly.

Many hotels, hostels, pensions, and resorts offer discounts for the low season, which includes January. Since there are fewer tourists at this time, you can get some great deals on your accommodation.

However, the cost savings for visiting in January go much further. In addition to airlines offering discounted flights in winter, many attractions also offer discounted rates. You can find that popular tourist attractions offer ticket price deals in the low season, so you can not only save the lines but also save money.

If you are on a tighter budget, there are a few other things that you can do in your cost planning. These include:

  • Always check for Menu del Dia: The Menu del Dia is the day’s menu, and many cafes and restaurants offer one. There are usually a couple of choices for your starter and main, but the deal also often includes a drink and bread. This can be an excellent way to not only try out the local cuisine but enjoy a great meal without breaking the bank.
  • Use public transport: Public transport in Spain is reliable and very budget-friendly. You can usually find routes between cities and out to rural areas. There are also some nice deals. For example, Renfe, the national train network, has passes allowing you to travel for unlimited weekly or monthly trips.
  • Check for free entry: Across Spain, many tourist attractions offer free entry. This is often on certain days or times, but it can be a great way to visit attractions without paying the standard ticket price. For example, if you’re prepared to get up early, you can visit the Cordoba Cathedral for free for approximately one hour before the regular opening time.

Spain in January: Travel Tips and Advisory

Of course, traveling to Spain in January is a little more unusual compared to the regular summer holidaymakers. So, there are a few travel tips and advice to ensure you have a great trip.

  • Layer for the weather: Since the weather can be more unpredictable in January, it is a good idea to layer up if you’re headed out for the day. While it may be cool in the morning, it can get hot later in the day, so you don’t want to overheat in thick clothing. Even if the day appears bright, carrying a light jacket in your bag can be a good idea.
  • Respect local traditions: One of the main draws for visiting Spain in January is all of the local festivals and events, but you need to respect the traditions. For example, if the festival includes visiting a cathedral or church, you must wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
  • Double-check travel: Schedules can vary between seasons, so double-checking is always worthwhile before you head out. While there is Uber in Spain , you don’t want to blow your budget on a lift back to your hotel if you find there is no bus or train available.

Wrapping Up: Spain in January

Spain in January is certainly worthwhile for any traveler. Whether you’re interested in winter sports or want to immerse yourself in Spanish culture, winter travel has many benefits.

From a variety of festivals and specialty winter dishes to avoiding the lines at popular tourist events and getting discounted tickets, you can enjoy a fantastic trip that will provide a unique insight into this amazing country.

Where Lonely Planet staffers are traveling this summer

Summer is around the corner in the northern hemisphere, and the team at Lonely Planet is already making (or has made) their travel plans.

If you're wondering where to go and what to do this summer, why not follow one of our leads and discover a new destination or rediscover an old favorite? I, unlike my colleagues, have yet to make plans, so finding out where everyone else is going has lit a fire under me. Likewise, I hope these trip plans inspire you to make some of your own – and that you'll turn to Lonely Planet for help when plotting your next getaway.

Here are just some of the places the staff at Lonely Planet traveling this summer.

"I'm going to a backcountry lodge in Banff . It's only accessible by hiking in. I’ve wanted to do one of these for ages, so this is how I’m celebrating my 40th!" – Jessica Lockhart, Senior Editor, Oceania

Banff and Jasper National Parks have several rustic backcountry lodges surrounded by unparalleled scenery. Each lodge has its own unique setting, hosts and history, but all have simple amenities, minimal (or no) electricity and running water, and welcoming common spaces where travelers can gather to read, play cards or recount the day’s adventures. Advance bookings are key – prices may seem steep, but factor in the included home-cooked meals and freedom from setting up camp or worrying about weather and wildlife, and the cost suddenly becomes worth it.

"I will be visiting Makarska Riviera , including Brela , Makarska, Tucepi and the island of Korčula . The trip is all about promoting Croatia ’s great outdoors , so the itinerary includes kayaking, rafting, buggying and lots of hiking !" – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

Croatia’s tourism peaks between June and August, when the Adriatic’s warm waters charm countless visitors. It’s great fun, though afternoons are roasting hot, the lines at attractions are at their longest, and accommodation costs rise. Inland, temperatures are higher, but crowds are less noticeable. June is the quietest month of high season, but with clear skies, music festivals and the promise of early summer, it's a strong contender for Croatia’s best month.

Ready to plan your trip to Croatia? Choose the right time for your visit with our seasonal guide

"I'm going island hopping  in Greece for four weeks in June. I'll be spending most of my time on Serifos (to start) as it's where the local Greeks holiday  – doing a pottery class, vineyard tour, taking boats to secluded coves, going to cooking school and generally trying to be as fabulous as possible – with additional stays on Santorini and Paros . – Chris Zeiher, Senior Director of Trade Sales and Marketing

Greece is ancient sun-bleached ruins piercing blue skies, the balmy Aegean lapping an endless coastline and a culture alive with passionate music, wonderful cuisine and thrill-seeking activities. Summer is when most travelers choose to explore its countless islands, and June affords the longest days of sunshine, peaking in the second fortnight. It’s also an opportune time for your first, refreshing dip of the summer.

"I'm heading to Tuscany and the island of Elba ." – Annie Greenberg, Creative Director  "We are doing a girls' trip to Tuscany." – Aly Yee, Senior Director

Tuscany escapes easy definition. The Apennines – Italy ’s mountainous spine – slope into vineyard-covered rolling hills, which in turn fade into the Mediterranean coast. Late spring to early autumn is when most people visit Tuscany. It’s easy to understand why – days get longer and warmer, the countryside comes to life, outdoor dining opportunities abound, and festivals happen all around.  The island of Elba comes to life during summer, and it’s worth booking accommodation well in advance if you plan to visit in the high season. Elba offers both great beaches and hiking opportunities along its Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE, Elba’s Great Crossing) trail.

"I'm off to car-free Isla Holbox , Mexico for a relaxing beach getaway. I'm planning on horseback riding and wataflow therapy, which I've never done, but should be interesting."  – Serina Patel, Marketing Manager

Isla Holbox (hol-bosh), meaning "black hole" in Mayan, lives up to its name – it's like a portal to one of Mexico’s last unspoiled tropical islands. Golf carts and bicycles serve as the main forms of transportation, and visitors will discover sandy streets, colorful Caribbean buildings, lazing, sun-drunk dogs, and sand so fine its texture is nearly clay. The greenish waters are a unique color from the mixing of ocean currents, and on land there's a mixing too: of locals and tourists, the latter hoping to escape the hubbub of Cancún .

"I'm heading to Granada , Spain for a week or so, maybe getting in Málaga too. This will be my second visit, so I'm hoping to take a more relaxed approach this time and also catch up with friends." – Alison Killilea, Production Support Editor

With serene Islamic architecture, monumental churches, old-school tapas bars and counterculture graffiti art, Granada is Spain’s cultured, creative southern city; a place with a storied past centering on the Alhambra , one of the world’s great human-made wonders. While Granada can be scorching in summer, the city of Málaga is deemed to have the best climate in the country, with about 3000 hours of sun a year – the most in all of Spain.

Seen the Alhambra? Here are Granada's other top experiences

Switzerland

"I'm also going to Zürich , Lucerne , Grindelwald  and Zermatt . I will mostly be hiking and doing lots of outdoorsy activities. My number one priority while I am in Switzerland is to do the highest hiking trail in Europe , the Barrhorn."  – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

Nowhere is perfect, but let’s face it, Switzerland gets pretty darned close. With its supermodel looks, fine weather, easy-peasy public transport , multilingual mindset and penchant for cheese and wine, this is a country where it’s easy to get comfortable – even if it is a bit on the pricey side.  Peak summer in Switzerland is  tip-top , to borrow the Swiss German phrase. Barring the odd storm, it’s nearly always hot and sunny – oppressively so, sometimes, meaning the best place to be is in the cooler air of the high mountains.

The Bahamas

"I'm heading to Eleuthera  in the  Bahamas for our annual family trip – there are 16 of us so it's always an exciting week! With age ranges of 7–70, I can report that we are all excited to do a beach bonfire and barbecue, and go sailing to swim with some piggies." – Amy Nichols, Senior Marketing Manager

The sapphire waters and  sun-soaked sands  of the Bahamas beckon travelers with warm weather that never fades. Just a short flight from the east coast of the US, this island nation is a magnet for repeat visitors and last-minute bookers alike. Eleuthera, however, is a bit tougher to get to, but is well worth the expense and effort if you're looking for vacation bliss. With its pink-sand beaches, Atlantic-battered reefs, weather-warped rock and dense subtropical scrub, this incredibly narrow 109-mile (175km-long) crescent also offers boutique hotels, revered surf breaks and some fabulous restaurants.

"I'm heading to Naples , Florida  on a family vacation for 2 weeks. I'm planning to relax mostly, with lots of trips to the beach and eating good food! But I'm hoping to take a trip to the Everglades , too." – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

For upscale romance and the prettiest, most serene city beach in southwest Florida, come to Naples, the Gulf Coast's answer to Palm Beach. The soft white sand is backed only by narrow dunes and half-hidden mansions. More than that, though, Naples is a cultured, sophisticated town, unabashedly stylish and privileged but also welcoming and fun-loving. With spectacular year-round sunshine, there's certainly no bad time to visit Florida . Summers can be pretty hot, but you'll probably spend less on lodging than the winter or summer months.

Massachusetts

"My friends and I are going to Martha’s Vineyard , Massachusetts in July. We’re planning a Midsommar -esque garden dinner one night and will spend the rest of our time beach hopping and strolling through Edgartown." – Ann Douglas Lott, Associate Editor

Martha's Vineyard remains untouched by the kind of rampant commercialism found on the mainland – there's not a single chain restaurant or cookie-cutter motel in sight. Sunny skies and consistently hot weather make July and August the best time for a traditional beach holiday with sunning, swimming and sand-digging. The tradeoff, of course, is that July and August are the months everyone goes to the Vineyard and it's likely to be jam-packed, so plan ahead.

Want to see more of Massachusetts? Here are the best road-trip routes

"My family is headed to Northern Michigan this summer. We're excited to paddleboard to a shipwreck, relax on the beach and sail on Lake Michigan. We'll hike and run down all the sand dunes, explore cute artsy towns full of galleries and good eats." – Sarah Stocking, Digital Editor

Summertime buzzes with travelers when draws like the  Great Lakes , charming islands and unspoiled wilderness are at their most accessible. Michigan’s high season kicks off on Memorial Day (the last Monday in May). Ferries start to depart more regularly to popular spots and while summer-only establishments lift their shutters. The weather is mostly sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging from 76°F (24°C) to 85°F (29°C). This means lots of summer-only outdoor activities begin.

There are loads of great beaches in Michigan. Here's our guide to the very best

North Carolina

"My wife and I are going to Kure Beach, North Carolina for the 4th of July for five days — my favorite things to do there are take a yoga class on the beach with Kure Beach Yoga (no need to bring a mat, bring a towel!), watch the sunrise from our hotel (The Lighthouse Inn, a very laid-back and recently revamped spot right by the water so you don’t have to stress about parking, which is awful every summer), and see if we can find the boardwalk cat, Bibi." – Rachel Lewis, Senior Social Media Manager

The height of summer in North Carolina is beach time, and with 322 miles (518km) of ocean shoreline reaching from the  Outer Banks  in the north to the  South Carolina  border in the south (and 12,000 miles/19,000km of estuarine coastline along the way),  North Carolina has plenty of beaches to choose from . Kure Beach has 6 miles (10km) of protected shoreline as well as lagoons teeming with wildlife that you can explore by renting a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard.

Rhode Island

"I'm off to Newport , Rhode Island for Memorial Day Weekend and planning on going to restaurants, wineries, mansion tours, walking and hiking." – Serina Patel, Marketing Manager

It may be the yachting capital of the world, but you don’t need nautical stripes – or a summer cottage – to enjoy the seaside retreat of Newport, Rhode Island. With its fresh briny air, expansive sea views and stunning bays, it's obvious why cityfolk continue to follow in the footsteps of the American industrialists here. Enjoy a taste of the good life by touring Newport's Gilded Age mansions built in the late 1800s, taking sailing lessons, or going wine tasting.

Discovery of Spain & Portugal - 15 days Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Discovery of Spain & Portugal - 15 days

On the whole the trip was excellent but there is room for improvement. 1. Tour guide was very nice, but in general I see they need to speak more in English for the 'English speaking group" 2. The food selection for the 'Plus package ' group can be better with more choices than just one predetermined main dish. 3. Airport pick up at Madrid did not happen as I have to pay extra for taxi to the hotel. Reason was there was no proper direct contact to the local transport service. The number given was not useful in getting information passed to the right person when flight got cancelled. 4. Need to stay in one hotel at least 2 nights. Otherwise it is too taxing on elderly folks.

Excellent service and support by Rufus at TourRadar and an amazing tour provided by Julia Travels. Highly recommend Julia Travels for any tours in Spain and Portugal. Our 18 days tour was planned and executed perfectly by Roxana. All of my questions and concerns were addressed promptly. Thanks to Rufus at TourRadar, Roxana at Julia, Santiago at Julia, and our tour coordinator/driver Gabriel for making our journey memorable!

Andalucia & Morocco

Great tour to get around and see everything quickly, but no free time to explore any of the areas we were in and the luxurious hotels we were staying in, we arrived late and checked out early without getting to use any facilities. Motels and hostels would have been more appropriate.

Best of Spain & Portugal Tour

Best of Spain & Portugal

Despite being a little cooler than we had expected, our Spring tour provided a very good variety of destinations in Portugal and Spain with ample time to explore the attractions we preferred to visit. An excellent guide together with off-season sightseeing gave us slightly smaller crowd lines with the added benefit of less over-worked hotel staff and easier transport. Senior travellers need to be aware this tour requires a reasonable degree of fitness particularly in Portugal.

Spanish Ring with Lisbon Tour

Spanish Ring with Lisbon

The hotel breakfasts were amazing. Our main guide was a treasure. I had some trouble understanding her accent at times, but I can say the same thing about American actors on TV. What was more import important was that she was warm, fun, and engaging. She made us come together as a group. There were endearing nicknames and hilarious "wake up" messages on the bus. My biggest disappoint was getting to Monserrat too late to see the Black Madonna, but it turned out, when I did my research, that I could have seen it from below--it was part of the decorations behind the alter in the cathedral. I had only to get closer and look up. There is so much to see! And we saw so much! I did three of the extra excursions and they were great, too. The flamenco was outstanding. We saw a flamenco legend and the Alhambra lit up at night. My biggest complaint is that most of the buses didn't have charging ports and I can't remember if they all had WiFi. Highly recommended.

Highlights of Spain and Portugal Tour

Highlights of Spain and Portugal

Seeing 9 places in 6 days was incredible! At some times tiring but well worth it. We had Thomas and he was fantastic! My friend and I were the youngest on the tour and were pretty much the only English speaking people. Despite the age and language barriers, we met some wonderful people and now have more reason to see more of the world and visit them. My only down point was staying one night in places meant we were not able to wash and couldn’t unpack. So be mindful of what you pack.

Amazing trip to Spain and Portugal. Best tour guides ever, Ana, Maria, Yolanda, and Sabrina were awesome. We loved Sabrina who spent the most time with us, taking care of every concern and need. Thank you guys for a wonderful and safe trip.

Charming Spain & Portugal - 10 Days Tour

Charming Spain & Portugal - 10 Days

Oh my, where to begin! Bus driver, itinerary, hotels and meals were excellent as were city tour guides. The negative: we were the only English speaking tourists on 3 different buses with 3 different guides. The tour was run by VPT. We switched bus and guide in Caceres and again in Granada. Each of the three guides spent 90% of the time speaking Spanish. Two of the guides did not speak English well. We had difficulty understanding directions and the 2nd guide was annoyed every time we asked for further explanation. 3 buses and 3 guides were not what we signed up for and we felt we were just being shuffled from place to place.

Great Iberian Route ( 13 days )

This is a well-paced tour around Spain. Some destinations you get to enjoy more than others as you will get few days at one stop, while most are like stop-overs. Its a taster, but a great way to maximize your vacation. You will be mingled with other tourists from other groups at any point of your tour which could be good or bad depending on how you take it. Overall a good experience.

As a result of this we were very close to not being picked up at all as there was a mix up with paperwork and we had no idea it was a different company. We will not go through a third party again. In saying that the actual tour itself was good. Guides were great, accommodation was excellent. Well done Julia Tours.

What people love about Portugal and Spain Tours in January

It was good, but tiring.
We signed up for an English tour and were put on an English/Spanish Tour. The whole bus was Spanish speaking people with only 4 of us English. Our first Tour Guide Alex was horrible. He totally forgot us 4 English speaking Customers. We had to beg and remind him constantly to give us info. When he did we got a very very watered down version. All the other Tour Guides were Great: Mohamed in Morocco and Felipe back in Spain. Alex actually put a Very bad taste in our mouths for Julia travel. The tour itself was Awesome and Most Amazing!
