Spain Tourist Visa: Who Needs One & How to Get It

Spain tourist visa

Would you like to enter and visit Spain? Then most likely you will need a tourist visa . In this article we will explore everything you need to know about Schengen visas: if you actually need to apply for one, how to do it step by step, requirements and more!

What is a tourist visa in Spain?

A tourist visa is the term that foreigners usually use to refer to a Schengen visa ; that is, the visa that allows citizens from outside the EU to travel, enter and visit this region.

If you want to visit Spain for a maximum of 90 days, you must apply for a Schengen tourist visa .

Nevertheless, this document or permission is not granted for any specific country: you apply for a visa that allows you to enter all the 25 countries that share a common border policy within the European Union .

Also, bear in mind that according to your country of origin, it is possible that you are not required to get this tourist or Schengen visa . As long as your country and Spain have a double treaty agreement, you can enter the country without one ( but still meeting the requirements ).

Where and how can I apply for it?

The Schengen visa allows you to travel within the whole area without problems.

But if you are just visiting one specific country, then you will have to attend its embassy or consulate in your country of origin to apply for your Schengen tourist visa .

But what happens if I am visiting more than one country within those 90 days?

Then you must apply at the consulte or embassy of the country you will spend more nights at (or of that which constitutes the first point of entry if you are spending equal nights in all your destinations).

You will basically need to make an appointment with the consulate to register your biometric data and to submit all the required documents, which we explore below.

Main requirements

On the day of the appointment at the consulate or embassy, you must bring and submit:

  • Your visa application form , properly completed. You can download a model here .
  • Valid passport (which can’t expire beyond 3 months after leaving the Schengen Area).
  • Airline reservation tickets (which must be round trip flights), demonstrating entry and exiting of the Schengen area.
  • Proof of accommodation or invitation letter .
  • Proof of financial means to sustain yourself in the country during the time of your visit (via bank statement); including last tax return if you are self-employed and letter of employment if not.
  • Travel insurance . Here you can find the main providers .
  • Two recent ID photos .
  • Visa fee , which varies according to the specific consulate (but can be around € 80).

When should you apply for your tourist visa for Spain?

You can’t apply earlier than 180 before your planned entry into the country, but that same application must be made a minimum of 3 weeks before your departure .

Despite the process being quite fast, it can take up to 15 working days to receive your visa response.

Nevertheless, in some cases the application can take longer , so our recommendation is that you start as soon as possible within those 6 months.

Who needs a Spain Tourist Visa?

Basically, non-EU citizens from those countries that do not have visa-free entry into Spain , like China, Indica, African countries, and Russia.

You can find the complete list of countries that must apply for a Schengen visa to enter the Spanish territory here.

On the other hand, there are other countries that have a visa-free agreement , like the US, Brazil, or Canada, that don’t need a visa.

This exception just applies to nationals of those countries , not to residents.

But be careful!

In 2021 the new ETIAS system will be implemented , and from then on all non-European Union citizens will have to request a visa online. Learn how here .

How long can I stay in the country with a tourist or Schengen visa?

You can stay up to a maximum of 3 months (90 days in total) in the country within a period of 180 days.

This is called the “ 90-day rule ”, and it applies to all countries within the Schengen Area .

This means that, if you spent 90 days in Spain but wish to stay longer, you will have two options:

  • You can either travel to any non-EU country and stay there for 3 extra months, then travel back to Spain
  • Or apply for any of the residence permits that can be obtained directly from Spain. Find the complete list of those residencies here .

If you are going to stay for the long run, it is crucial that you understand this last point, as many residencies must be applied from your country of origin (like the non-lucrative visa).

Can I extend my Schengen visa while being within the Schengen Area?

Even though the situations in which you can do it are limited, it is indeed possible to extend the duration of your tourist visa .

In that sense, only for the following reasons will that extension be available:

  • If you have a single-entry short-stay visa and have made a late entry to the Schengen area (meaning days after the visa became valid).
  • Due to humanitarian reasons and if the extension will help you avoid hardship, like keep receiving any kind of medical treatment or giving support to a relative going through a harsh situation.
  • If your home country is suffering any sudden situatio n (force majeure), like a conflict or war.
  • Personal reasons of major importance (even though it is unlikely you will be granted the extension in this case).

You must remain in that same country after you finish your extension application.

This application can last several days (time during which you don’t need to leave the country). In case the extension gets rejected, you will have a maximum of 2 days to leave.

Types of Schengen visas

As we have mentioned, a tourist visa is in fact a Schengen visa, a document that is equally valid for the different countries within the Schengen Area.

In that sense, we can find the following Schengen visas :

Business visa

If you are visiting Spain for less than 90 days for business reasons (like attending a business event, having certain meetings with your prospective clients, etc.) you must request a business visa .

If this is the case, the documents to be submitted will vary accordingly:

  • You will have to include on your application the invitation letter from the Spanish company you are meeting with.
  • If, on the other hand, you are attending any kind of event or fair, you must include the entry tickets .
  • A certification from your company or employer demonstrating that they allow you to embark on this business trip.

Airport transit visa (type A)

The airport transit visa will be requested if the foreigner is traveling to a different country but must stop in Spain in between (for example, to take a different plane that gets her to the final destination).

If you are from one of the following countries, you will need to get your airport transit visa in order to go through Spain : Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Djibouti, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, India, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Syria, Togo, Yemen, and Palestina.

Nevertheless, being a permanent United States resident with any of the before mentioned nationalities eliminates the need to get this visa.

Furthermore, nationals from the following countries need an airport transit visa to go through any of the Schengen countries : Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Irak, Nigeria, Pakistán, Somalia y Sri Lanka.

Student visa

In case you are enrolling in any kind of course or study in the country taking less than 3 months, you will have to get a student visa.

In that case, it will be required to include the acceptance letter from the university or school in which you are going to study.

Regular tourist visa

This is the most common type of Schengen visa, the one granted to those who want to visit the country for tourism or leisure activities .

The documentation that will be required can be found in prior sections of this article.

Other frequently asked questions

Here is a summary of the main questions foreigners wishing to visit Spain ask themselves more frequently:

What happens if my visa application gets rejected?

If that is the case, you have two different options :

  • If the reason that got your application is clear and you agree with it, you can formalize a new application but solving that what caused the rejection.
  • On the other hand, if you feel everything was right and no document was missing, you can initiate an appeal . But, again, follow with path only if you think there has been a mistake.

Can I work in Spain with a tourist visa?

No, in order to work in Spain you need a regular work permit .

You can just meet with your clients or do any other similar type of business activity in case you hold a business visa.

Can I join my relatives with my tourist visa?

No, you are allowed to visit them during the permitted 90 days, but once that period comes to an end you must leave the country.

So even though you have family members in the country, you can’t stay for the long run with them .

If that is your intention, you must apply for a family reunification visa or for a residence permit as an EU relative (if that is the case).

Traveling To Spain

Tourist Visa in Spain 1

Spain is a mix of old and new, modern and traditional . For the traveler, Spain means many things: bullfights, massive cathedrals, world-class art, Muslim palaces, whitewashed villages, delicious paella, sunny beaches, and lively nightlife.

You’ll find all those things, but the country’s charm lies in its people and their unique lifestyle.

From the stirring communal sardana dance in Barcelona to the sizzling rat-a-tat-tat of flamenco in Sevilla, this country creates its beat amid the heat.

Madrid and Barcelona are hip and energetic cities, Granada has a Moorish touch, Valencia has its vibe, Catalonia has its language and culture, and the Basque region (an autonomous community in northern Spain) feels like you’re in an entirely different country.

As a bonus, Spain is an incredibly affordable place to visit.

Things To See And Do In Spain

Tourist Visa in Spain 2

Enjoy Barcelona

Like Madrid, Barcelona is famous for its partying, late-night eating, and historic streets. Embrace the midnight meals and all-night partying and you’ll fit right in with the locals.

Don’t miss the history museum — it’s one of the best in Europe! Other highlights include the Picasso Museum, the towering and iconic La Sagrada Familia (and Gaudi’s other works), and wandering the Barri Gotic (the Gothic Quarter).

Explore the history of Granada

Granada is one of the most favored cities in Spain. It’s a place where culture and ideas from North Africa and Europe collide uniquely and no trip to the south of Spain is complete without a visit.

Don’t miss the Alhambra , a UNESCO World Heritage palace and a fortress dating to the 13th century, and be sure to watch a Flamenco show while you’re there. They usually cost around 20 EUR.

Wander Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain , is famous for its museums, tapas, and nightlife. Like Barcelona, this is a city that doesn’t start until midnight.

You can see the Prado, one of the largest museums in the world, and the Royal Palace.

Other highlights include the Temple of Debod (an Egyptian temple from the 2nd century BCE), El Retiro Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the 15th -century Plaza Mayor.

Revel in La Tomatina

La Tomatina is an epic hour-long tomato fight that draws upwards of 20,000 people to the small town of Buñol (only 10,000 people live in the town itself).

Started in 1945 , this festival is held on the last Wednesday of August, and over 360,000 pounds of tomatoes are used during the event.

Wander Seville

Seville is an amazing city with gorgeous churches and historic palaces . It has tasty cuisine too and is also known for its Flamenco dancing.

Be sure to check out the Royal Alcázar (also known as al-Qasr al-Muriq), the oldest residential palace in Europe still in use today (it dates to the 14th century ).

You can’t visit southern Spain without spending a couple of days here!

Traveling Costs In Spain

Tourist Visa in Spain 3

Accommodation

Accommodation in Spain is relativel y cheap when compared to other Western European countries.

Dorm beds in hostels typically begin around 15 EUR per night in the low season and go as high as 30 EUR in major cities like Barcelona or Madrid during the summer.

Hostel private rooms start at 45-60 EUR per night for a double.

Free Wi-Fi is standard and it’s not uncommon to find hostels with free breakfast either.

Budget hotels begin at around 55 EUR for a twin or double and go up from there. Prices are slightly lower outside of the major cities and tourist areas but can be higher in peak season .

Airbnb is common in most major cities, with a private room starting around 30 EUR per night. For an entire home or apartment, expect to pay at least 70 EUR per night (often double that in the big cities or peak season).

For those traveling with a tent, there are hundreds of campsites across Spain.

The campground costs around 10-20 EUR per night. They can be as low as 5 EUR for a basic tent plot without electricity while other costlier sites (up to 40 EUR per site) often include extra luxuries like a pool, electricity, and Wi-Fi.

Food

Spain has a strong food culture , where meals can last hours and dinner often isn’t served until after 8 p.m . Each region in the country has its local dishes and food culture.

Common favourites include paella, gazpacho, churros, jámon ibérico (cured pork), patatas bravas (fried potatoes with sauce), and tortilla (Spanish omelette).

You can usually find tapas and sandwiches for 5-10 EUR . Cheap fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 8 EUR for a combo meal. Chinese food is around 10 EUR for a main dish while pizza costs 9-12 EUR .

Beer is 3-4 EUR while a latte/cappuccino is around 2 EUR. Bottled water is less than 1 EUR.

A decent casual restaurant meal costs around 20 EUR with a drink. If you go out for paella, drinks, or appetizers, plan to spend around 30 EUR for a meal.

Spain has a lot of expensive restaurants if you want to splash out. Meals at finer establishments begin around 40 EUR with a drink.

If you plan on cooking your food, groceries cost around 35-55 EUR per week. This gets you basic staples like pasta, rice, seasonal produce, and some meat or seafood. You can find the cheapest (and freshest) produce and meat at the local markets.

How To Get Around Spain

Tourist Visa in Spain 4

Public transportation

Madrid and Barcelona have extensive metro systems , while Valencia, Zaragoza, Bilbao, and Seville have limited but practical metro systems (or light rail).

Most big cities have a comprehensive bus system as well. Single rides usually cost between 1-2 EUR. You can often buy day passes that save you money overall if you plan on using the metro system quite a bit. These usually cost around 8-15 EUR.

The bus is the cheapest option for getting between cities in Spain. FlixBus has tickets starting as low as 5 EUR . Most buses come with outlets and free Wi-Fi.

A 9-hour trip from Madrid to Barcelona starts from about 30 EUR while the 4-hour trip between Seville and Granada costs around 20 EUR . Alsa is another popular bus company, mostly for travel in the south.

Trains

RENFE is the national rail line in Spain, and the country has both high-speed trains and regular trains.

High-speed trains are more expensive but you can travel between Madrid and Barcelona in just 2.5 hours , which might be worth it depending on how much time you have.

Even on the more expensive high-speed train, however, you can find tickets from Madrid to Barcelona for as low as 58 EUR . The trip from Madrid to Seville is around 2.5 hours and costs 30 EUR while Madrid to Valencia is just under 2 hours and costs 25 EUR.

Flying

If you’re pressed for time and are looking to hop from one city to the next, a budget airline like Ryanair might be the way to go. Book in advance to keep costs down.

However, be aware that you have to pay for all the extras on these cheap flights (such as checked baggage, picking your seat, etc……)

So, while flights are cheap (Madrid to Barcelona can be found for as little as 65 EUR round trip), the small expenses add up. And when you factor in getting to/from the airport, most flights aren’t much faster than the train.

Car rental

Car rentals can be found for as little as 25 EUR per day when booked in advance. Renters will need an International Driving Permit before booking. The minimum age for renting a car is 21.

Ridesharing

If your schedule is flexible, use a ridesharing service and catch rides with locals between cities. Drivers are verified and it’s perfectly safe. BlaBlaCar is the biggest company.

While not necessarily cheaper than the bus, it’s usually faster and more interesting.

How To Apply For A Spain Tourist Visa For Visitors?

Tourist Visa in Spain 7

To apply for a Spain Tourist or Visitor visa you will need to follow these steps:

  • Fill in the tourist/visitor visa application form.
  • Collect the required documents.
  • Appoint an interview.
  • Attend your interview.
  • Pay the tourist visa fees

Fill in The Spain Tourist Visa Application Form

As soon as you make the appointment, you should start collecting the documents required to present on the day of your appointment. Start with the application form.

There is one common visa application form for all types of short-stay visas, for every country in the Schengen territory. Complete this form, print it, and then sign it at the end.

After you complete the form, check if all your questions are correct and if you made any typos.

Note that your answers in this form must comply with the information in the rest of the required documents for a Spain Visitor Visa or Spain Tourist Visa, whichever you are applying for.

Appoint An Interview

After figuring out the two things listed above, you should make an appointment for the submission of your visa application file and the interview.

You can make an appointment for a Spain Visa application through the website of the authority responsible for the admission of your application or through a phone call. In some countries, there is only one option available, while in others there is both.

Gather The Required Documents

Next, proceed to collect the rest of the documents required for a Spain Visitor Visa, or Spain Tourist Visa, according to your purpose of the application.

Attend Your Spain Visa Appointment

Once you make the appointment, and you have all the required documents ready, you should wait for the day of your interview .

When that day comes, make sure you show up at the Spanish embassy/consulate/VAC on time. Have all your documents with you, arranged in order.

You will attend a meeting with a consular officer . The latter will ask you questions regarding your trip to Spain, and the purpose of the application for a visa, and will ask you to hand the documents to her/him.

If this is the first time in the last 5 years that you are applying for your Schengen visa, you will also need to provide your biometric data – your facial image and fingerprint.

Pay The Fees

You will need to pay a fee of €80 to apply for a Spain Tourist Visa or a Spain Visitor Visa. The fee is required to cover the expenses that come out of the processing of your application.

Note that children under the age of 12 are subject to a fee of €40 , while those under six are exempt from any fee for a Spain short-stay visa.

In addition, the nationals of a few countries and several other categories are exempt from paying a fee for a short-stay visa for Spain.

Where Should You Submit My Application For A Spain Tourist Visa?

Tourist Visa in Spain 8

The Spanish authorities are responsible for the admission and the processing of your application only if Spain is your main Schengen destination, which means:

  • You will only visit Spain and no other Schengen country.
  • You will visit other Schengen countries aside from Spain, but you will stay in Spain the longest .
  • You will visit several Schengen countries and you will spend the same amount of days in each, but you will enter the borderless territory through Spain.

Once you make sure that Spanish authorities are the ones responsible for the admission of your visa application, check at which Spanish representation in your country you should lodge your application. This could be:

  • The Spanish embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  • A Visa Application Center , to which Spain has outsourced visa processing in your country.
  • One of the three listed above, located in a neighboring country, in the absence of them in your country of residence.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Tourist Visa For Spain?

Tourist Visa in Spain 9

Normally, the Schengen embassies, including the Spanish ones, are obliged to process visa applications for short-term visas for tourism and visiting within 15 days . Yet, in some cases, this period may be extended for 30 days or even 60 days .

Such an extension may happen at times when the embassy where you lodge your application is receiving many requests for visa application processing, or due to your specific case.

Spain Tourist/Visitor Visa Validity

Tourist Visa in Spain 10

A Spain tourist or visitor visa can be valid for a maximum period of three months within half a year.

Yet, it is the authority that grants you the visa that decides on the validity of your visa, depending on how they see it as reasonable. You can calculate your legal stay in Spain here.

While you can get a visa valid for three months, you can also get one valid for three days. When you receive your passport with the Spain visa sticker on it, pay attention to the following tags:

  • FROM – stands for the first day you are permitted to enter the Schengen Area.
  • UNTIL – stands for the last day when you will have to leave the Schengen Area.
  • DURATION OF STAY – stands for the number of days you are permitted to remain in the Schengen Zone within the given dates near the “from” – “until” tags.

The visa sticker in your passport contains a lot of other information, such as the countries in which you may not be permitted to enter, the permitted number of entries with that visa, etc.

In Case Of Visa Rejection

If you receive a negative response on your Spain visa application, you will also get a letter with a reason why your application is being rejected. In this case, you have two choices:

  • Move one and make a new application , by avoiding the previous mistakes and improving your situation.
  • Write an Appeal Letter for Schengen Visa rejection, but only if you think that your application has been rejected by mistake or unjustly. You should have a strong basis to write this letter and present facts that support your point.

When To Go To Spain

Tourist Visa in Spain 11

Spain is lovely year-round, but the peak season is in the summer from June to August.

Popular destinations like Barcelona and Ibiza experience a massive influx of tourism — so much so that Barcelona’s residents have started clamping down on overtourism. The weather is fabulous this time of year with high temperatures well into the 30s°C (90s°F)

The temperature in Spain doesn’t often drop too low, with winter temps between 4-10°C (40-50°F) country-wide.

However, Northern Spain does sometimes experience snowfall — especially in the mountainous areas.

The shoulder seasons ( spring and autumn ) are great times to visit. Tourism is much less congested and prices are a bit cheaper .

Temperatures are pleasant , although it’s not exactly beach season. Beach destinations like Ibiza and Mallorca tend to get very quiet during this time but there is still plenty to see and do around the rest of the country.

Spanish adventure shouldn’t be hindered by visa troubles. With our comprehensive guide , step into the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of Spain without a hitch. Navigate your journey with ease and immerse in the enriching experiences Spain has to offer.

Spain: tourist visa requirements for foreign visitors

“ What are the Spain tourist visa requirements? ” should be the first question that comes to your mind as soon as you start planning your trip. Well, here’s the answer!

Table of Contents

Do you need a travel visa to Spain?

In Spain, tourist visa policies are different depending on the nationality. As a member of the European Union, conditions applied to neighboring countries are much more flexible. In addition to this, other countries (European and Latin American) are also excluded from travel visa obligations.

Important recommendations before starting your trip:

  • Check the expiry date of your passport and your national ID card (if your country has one)! They need to be valid at least for some time after the end of your trip.
  • Make sure your passport has blank visa pages. Spain authorities require that you have adequate unused pages in your passport, allowing for any necessary stamps upon arrival and departure. Allow at least 2-3 free pages in visas section.
  • Take your passport and national ID card with you. In Spain a driving license, a student card and other documents are not considered as a valid national ID card.

Here is a complete and updated list , according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores ), of the nationals for which a tourist visa is NOT required.

Apart from these, all nationals from the rest of the world will need to apply for a tourist visa through a Spanish Embassy or Consulate a few weeks before their departure.

You don’t need a tourist visa. What do you need to pass immigration?

The situation is different depending on whether you are from a European country or not since the document that the Spanish authorities will request from you will be different.

  • You are a national of a European country: you can present either your passport or your national ID card.
  • You are a national of a non-European country: you can only present your passport.

Check this information with the nearest Spanish Embassy or Consulate .

You can stay during up to 90 days during any 6-month period. In other words, you can spend a total of 90 days throughout a period of 6 months. From then on, you’ll have to leave the country.

However, there are a few tricks that you can use to stay 90+ days holding a Schengen tourist visa . Risky, but might end successfully.

You need a tourist visa. What do you do?

All visas are managed and issued by Spanish Embassies and Consulates . You will need to apply and obtain your visa there prior to your trip.

Note that visas are not issued in Spain! Don’t try to enter the country without a visa as you won’t be allowed to enter Spain, and your embassy or consulate will not be able to help you.

You are not allowed to apply by email, regular mail or fax. The application must be submitted in person. Therefore, request the respective appointment at least one month before the proposed date of travel.

Likewise, you are only allowed to pick up your student visa in person.

In general, you should apply for a visa approximately 4 to 8 weeks before the date of departure. However, it depends very much on the time of the year and the demand that each embassy or consulate has.

Each Spanish Embassy and Consulate has different visa procedures. Contact them to make sure what documents they require, the fees and the time it will take to process your visa.

Nevertheless, here is a preliminary list that can help you out:

  • Schengen Visa application form . You must fill it in and sign it.
  • Medical insurance with international coverage. The Embassy or Consulate may even require you to sign a sworn declaration.
  • Cover letter, explaining in detail the purpose of your visit.
  • Flight bookings with your name and return date.
  • Travel itinerary and hotel bookings for the entire duration of stay.

  • Application procedures for a Spanish Schengen visa may vary, depending on where you are applying from. Applicants may have to download, complete, and print the online form which can be accessed here .
  • Submit the paper copy to the Spanish consulate or visa processing center.
  • Most applications require an in-person appointment at the nearest Spanish Consulate or visa center in order to submit the application. Alternatively, applications may be submitted without prior appointment during normal operating hours. Contact the Spanish consulate or visa center to determine if there is a need to schedule an appointment.
  • Note: Applications must be submitted at least 15 days before the date of travel but not earlier than 6 months before the date of travel.

When to Apply

Visa applications must be submitted at least 15 days before the travel date but not earlier than 6 months before the travel date.

Where to Apply for a Spain Visa

Applications should be submitted either through the Spanish Consulate or a visa application center that is connected with Spain.

In countries without any Spanish consulate, applications may be submitted through a Schengen state consulate representing the interests of a Spanish consulate.

Applications should be submitted only in the country of citizenship or residence.

Applicants can check for the locations of Spanish consulates or embassies and visa application centers here .

Spain Visa Processing Time

Generally, it takes approximately 15 days to process Spain Schengen visa applications. However, in some cases it might take as long as 45 days.

For approved visa applications:

Applicants must ensure that the information on the visa is complete and valid upon collection.

Applicants who have received their Schengen Visa for Spain should remember the following things:

  • Inform the Spanish Consulate or visa application center of any change to your itinerary after submission is completed.
  • The approval of a Schengen visa does not guarantee entry upon arrival to Spain or other countries in the Schengen area.
  • Additional documents pertaining to your financial means or accommodation may still be required to gain entry to Spain or other Schengen areas.

For denied Spain visa applications:

If your application for a Spanish Schengen visa was rejected, you have the right to appeal the decision.

The appeal process begins by picking up the standard-issued visa refusal form which also has the details of the reason for the rejection and the procedures of the appeal process.

Appeals can be submitted to the same consulate that rejected the original visa application.

Another option is to submit an appeal to the High Court of Justice of Madrid’s administrative division not more than 2 months after receiving the refusal.

A non-refundable fee must be paid for the appeal to be processed.

Spain Tourist Visa

The Schengen Visa allows tourists from around the world to go to Spain. As Spain is in the Schengen Area , it shares a common border policy with other countries. This means that tourist visas are not issued for individual countries such as Spain but for the entire region.

What is the Spain Tourist Visa?

As a specific tourist visa for Spain does not exist, tourists need a Schengen Visa to enter Spain for tourism . The Schengen Visa allows visitors to spend up to 90 days in Spain as well as the other participating Schengen countries.

To apply for a Schengen Visa , you need to visit a Spanish embassy or consulate in your home country. All embassies and consulates of all the Schengen countries accept visa applications, but you have to apply at a diplomatic office of the main destination you plan to visit.

Who needs a Spain Tourist Visa?

All nationalities who are not eligible for visa-free entry into Spain need a tourist visa to enter the country. At the moment there are numerous countries that enjoy visa-free access for periods of up to 90 days (ETIAS will be required to enter from 2025).

The following countries are eligible to enter Spain (and the other Schengen countries) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period :

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Bosnia and Herz.
  • El Salvador
  • Marshall Islands
  • New Zealand
  • North Macedonia
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • S.V. and Grenadines
  • Solmon Islands
  • South Korea
  • Timor Leste
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United States
  • Vatican City
  • UK nationals who are not EU citizens

ETIAS Visa Waiver

The nationalities which can currently enter the Schengen Area visa-free will need to obtain an ETIAS Authorisation from 2025. It will be similar to the US ESTA Visa and is a visa waiver, not a   visa . The online application form will be simple and only take a few minutes to complete.

ETIAS Travel Authorisation will be valid for 3-year periods and allow travellers to enter all countries in the Schengen Area and countries in the process of joining the Schengen Area, such as Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania . Travellers will be able to enter the region multiple times as long as the total number of days spent in the zone does not exceed 90 days (in any 180-day period).

Types of Schengen Visas

In addition to the Schengen Tourist Visas , there are other types of Schengen Visas that allow visitors to enter for a range of purposes including for transit and for business.

Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

The vast majority of passengers do not need an Airport Transit Schengen Visa . The visas allow travellers to change flights at an airport in the Schengen Area as long as they do not leave the designated transit area. Visitors cannot leave the international transit area with a Schengen Transit Visa .

‘Type A’ Transit Visas only permit one airport transfer , if someone needs to transit through two or more airports it is necessary to obtain a regular Schengen Visa (Type C) . Only citizens of the following countries need a Transit Visa to transfer at an airport in the Schengen Area:

  • Afghanistan

Business Visa

A Schengen Business Visa is a special type of visa for travelling to the Schengen Area for business purposes. Like the tourist visa, it allows visitors to spend up to 90 days (of any 180-day period) in the Schengen zone. Applicants need to go to an embassy or consulate of the country where they wish to conduct business to apply for the business visa .

Every business person from a country which does not have a visa facilitation agreement with the EU needs a Business Visa for the Schengen Area to travel to the zone to conduct business. This includes meeting clients and partners, as well as attending business fairs.

How to get a Tourist Visa to visit Spain

To apply for a Tourist Visa to visit Spain , it is necessary to go to a Spanish embassy or consulate. As there are no individual tourist visas for Schengen countries, visitors need to obtain a Schengen Tourist Visa instead.

To successfully apply, applicants must submit a range of documentation which includes: the visa application form, two recent passport photos, valid passport , travel itinerary, health insurance, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, and either proof of employment or an income tax return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the most common questions about Schengen Visas and the online application process.

Will having a criminal record affect the ETIAS application?

There will be a section on the ETIAS application form about the applicant’s background. It will be essential to answer honestly as the information will be verified.

Having a criminal record could potentially affect an ETIAS application though it depends on the seriousness of the crime and when and where it was committed. Minor offences are unlikely to affect applications.

How much will it cost to apply for ETIAS?

To submit the ETIAS application , there will be an obligatory fee which will be payable by credit or debit card.

Once the payment has been made and the application has been approved, the ETIAS authorisation will be granted .

Differences between ETIAS and ESTA

ETIAS will be similar to ESTA but they will be valid for different countries . ETIAS will permit entry into the Schengen Area, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, and Romania, whereas ESTA is for the USA.

The application processes will be effectively the same. Like ESTA, applicants will need to complete an online application and pay a fee. The information provided will be screened against security databases before the visa is approved.

When will ETIAS be implemented?

ETIAS will launch in 2025 . Once implemented, it will be obligatory for visitors from eligible countries to obtain an ETIAS Visa Waiver before travelling to Europe.

1. Complete the Tourist/Visitor Visa Application Form:

  • Obtain the application form for a Spain tourist visa from the official website of the Spanish consulate or embassy where you intend to apply.
  • Fill out the form accurately and completely, providing all the required personal information, travel details, purpose of visit, and other relevant information.

2. Gather the Necessary Documents:

  • Compile all the necessary supporting documents required for the visa application. Common documents might include:
  • Valid passport with a minimum of six months' validity beyond your intended stay.
  • Passport-sized photographs meeting the specified requirements.
  • Travel itinerary, including flight reservations and accommodation details.
  • Proof of financial means to cover expenses during your stay in Spain, such as bank statements, sponsorship letters, or proof of employment.
  • Travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation for the duration of your stay in Spain.
  • Proof of ties to your home country, such as employment letters, property ownership, or family ties, to demonstrate your intention to return after the visit.

  • Sole visitation to Spain without traveling to any other Schengen country.
  • Visits to multiple Schengen nations, with Spain as the longest stay among them.
  • Equal duration stays in various Schengen countries but entering the borderless region via Spain.

Once confirmed Spanish authorities oversee your visa application, and identify the appropriate Spanish representation for submission:

  • Spanish embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  • A Visa Application Center is contacted for visa processing by Spain in your country.
  • One of the above options in a neighboring country if unavailable in your country of residence.

As per Spain's Short Stay visa regulations, you can apply for a visa as early as six months before your intended trip to Spain, with the latest application accepted up to two weeks before your departure date.

Typically, Schengen embassies, including Spanish ones, must handle short-term tourist and visit visa applications within 15 days. However, under certain circumstances, this timeframe might extend to 30 or even 60 days. This extension could occur due to a high volume of applications at the embassy or based on the particulars of your case.

Know More: Difference Between Visit Visa & Tourist Visa: What You Need to Know

A tourist or visitor visa for Spain allows a maximum duration of three months within six months. However, the issuing authority determines the visa's validity based on their discretion and judgment of reasonableness.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Spain set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Spain’s embassy or consulates in the UK .

If you are planning to travel to Spain through France, check the latest FCDO travel advice for France before you start your journey.

If you are planning to travel to Spain through Gibraltar, check the latest FCDO travel advice for Gibraltar before you start your journey.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.

Passport validity requirements

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact Spain’s embassy or consulates in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training.

If travelling to Spain and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements. Check with Spain’s embassy or consulates in the UK before you travel about what type of visa or work permit you may need.

If travelling to Spain for work , read the guidance on visas and permits.

If you cannot return to the UK before the expiry of your visa, permit or visa-free limit, contact the Spanish government’s national information service (In Spanish, English speaking operators are available). You can dial 060 from a Spanish phoneline.

If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).

If you stay in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Passport stamping

Check your passport is stamped as you enter or exit the Schengen area through Spain as a visitor.

Border guards check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If you do not have relevant entry or exit stamps in your passport, they will assume you have overstayed.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence includes boarding passes and tickets.

Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you are aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates where they are in operation.

If you use an e-gate, make sure you get your passport stamped by a border officer.

Additional documents required by tourists

If you enter the Schengen area as a tourist, you may need to provide additional documents at the border. As well as a valid return or onward ticket, when travelling to Spain you could be asked to show:

  • you have enough money for your stay
  • a hotel booking confirmation
  • proof of address if visiting your own property (such as second home)
  • an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts.

You can visit the Spanish Ministry of Interior website for more information (only available in Spanish).

Residents of Spain

If you are resident in Spain your passport should not be stamped when entering or leaving Spain.

Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control. For further information, read about living in Spain .

Travel between Spain and Gibraltar

Spanish border checks can cause delays when crossing between Spain and Gibraltar. If you are travelling to Spain through Gibraltar, check the travel advice for entry requirements for Gibraltar .

There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. You should not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge.

Unaccompanied minors

Spanish law considers anyone under 18 to be a minor. If an unaccompanied minor comes to the attention of the Spanish authorities (particularly in connection with criminal incidents or when in hospital) they will be considered vulnerable and may be taken to a minors centre until a parent or guardian is found.

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about what goods can be taken into and out of Spain. You can find details on the National Tax Agency leaflet (in Spanish and English). Declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food and drink into Spain

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons. Check the rules about taking food and drink into the EU on the European Commission website.

Taking money and goods into Spain

Check the National Airport Association website for guidance on taking money and goods into and out of Spain.

National visas

Third-country nationals require a national visa when they are going to stay in Spain for more than 90 days (in any 180-day period) for the purposes of work, study or establishing their residence. They also need a national visa when moving to Spain to work for a period of under 90 days.

Citizens of the European Union or of the States of the European Economic Area or Switzerland do not need a visa to establish their residence in Spain or for long-term studies or to work. However, once in Spain, they must be entered on the Register for Citizens of the Union. Family members accompanying them, and who benefit from the right to free movement, must apply for a residence permit in Spain. If they need a stay visa because of their nationality, they must obtain a visa for family members of a citizen of the Union (see section " Visas for family members of a citizen of the Union ").

The national visa allows the holder to travel to Spain and to transit through and move around the territory of any Schengen State for a maximum of 90 days. However, it does not automatically entitle them to enter the Schengen area. The border authorities can refuse entry if not all entry requirements are met (See section "Conditions for entry into Spain").

All about Spain tourist visa for Indians (Schengen visa): how to apply, documents required and fees

With the famed Bollywood movie- Zindagi na milegi dobara, Spain has been steadily climbing up the travel bucket list charts of many Indians. The picturesque cobblestone streets, the magic of Alhambra and Alcazar of Seville , the blue hues of the Spanish coast – they make a lovely Spanish holiday for all kinds of travelers. If you are getting ready for this, then the first step is getting a Spain tourist visa – viz- Schengen visa for Spain. And that is how I started my prep for the epic Spain trip.

Plaza de espana in Seviile, Spain

My research for the Spain tourist visa started with a doubt – was this visa the same as the Schengen tourist visa? Google this and you get a BLS visa application site with two headings – short-stay visa and national visa. Go further in, it says tourist visa and takes you to a Spanish website that seems to offer Schengen visa. It took me a few readings on various websites to realize that the Spain tourist visa was the same as Schengen visa for Indians.

My first visit to Europe took me across several countries and involved a multiple-entry Schengen visa that I got through the French embassy and VFS Global. With Kuoni travel involved, it seemed like a breeze – all I had to do was to follow the documentation requirement that the tour agency gave me and voila – Visa granted! This time around, I chose to apply on my own – solely through the Spanish consulate and BLS India . There were several doubts and clarifications that I sought but in the end – it was a success with me getting my Schengen visa for Spain in less than a week.

This blog post is all about helping you figure the maze of applying for a Schengen visa for Spain from India. I will be taking you through the entire process, explaining the Spain tourist visa requirements, how and where you need to get your appointments and what to keep in mind for a successful visa stamp from Spain. The post also, includes the costs and the details on the Schengen visa fee for Indians.

This post is also for those who are looking to apply for Schengen visas to visit other European countries . 90% of the Spanish Schengen visa formalities are the same for all the countries in the EU (European Union). In this Schengen visa guide, I have also, included information and tips to help you apply for Schengen visa to these other countries. There is a complete section at the end only on the common q ueries of a Schengen visa for Indians – most of which are through VFS Global and not BLS International. So let’s get going.

About Schengen Visas and countries included

As I discovered Spain tourist visa is the same as a Schengen Visa . You will see me use these two terms interchangeably throughout this article. That said – I feel it is prudent to start with a quick introduction to what exactly are Schengen visas and where exactly are they valid.

One of the countries in the Schengen Visa list is Switzerland

There are 28 countries in the Schengen visa list . These countries have an understanding of border control or rather seamless borders. Obtaining a Schengen visa allows you a short visit of 90 days in these Schengen states (all to be done within a 180 days period). Here is the list of these Schengen visa countries –

  • Bulgaria (recent addition)
  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Romania (recent addition)
  • Switzerland

Where can you get Spain tourist visa for Indians?

For most countries, the application for Schengen visa in India is through VFS Global . In fact, for my first Europe trip in 2014 – 15, I applied for my Schengen visa at VFS Global. At that time, even Spanish visa for Indians was done through them.

However, that has changed for Spain Schengen visa and this time, I had to apply through BLS International.

The Spain tourist visa for Indians allows you access to Granada and all the other Spanish cities

The BLS India visa application centers for Spain visas are in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Puducherry, Chandigarh and Jalandhar. You need to book an appointment at any of these centers by clicking through this link .

Alternatively, you have an option to book a Doorstep service where the documents, application and biometrics can be collected from your home or office. There is an additional charge for this and you need to get in touch with BLS through their contact form found he r e. I honestly, do not know how this works as I went ahead with an appointment at the physical office in Bengaluru.

A tip here is to book a Schengen visa appointment at least a month prior to your travel dates to buffer any unforeseen delays owing to improper documentation or even public holidays. There are limited slots per day. Also, keep sufficient time – say around 5 days to gather all your documents for the BLS visa application for Spain. In my case, I had over a week from the time I booked my BLS Spain visa appointment to the actual submission and trust me, this really helped get all my documents in place.

P.S: This is the same if you are applying through VFS Global for any other Schengen visa. Keep at least a week’s buffer to gather the documents and book your appointment at least a month prior to your travel dates.

What are the Spain visa fees for Indians? (Cost of Schengen visa)

The cost of a Spain Schengen tourist visa for Indians in 2024 is INR 7275 per passport . This is the base fee that is similar to almost all Schengen visas. In addition to this fee for Spanish visa for Indians, you will need to be prepared to spend on the following –

  • BLS Visa service fee – INR 1537 per passport
  • Courier Fee – INR 600 per passport (if you wish, you can avoid this and pick up your passport at the BLS international center)
  • SMS Fee – INR 200 per passport (optional, the SMS intimates you on the status of your passport, visa and courier. You can also, track this online for free)
  • Call back service (STS) – INR 350. I am not sure if this is mandatory but I wasn’t asked for an option and it was added to my bill
  • Courier Assurance – INR 145. Again not sure if this is required but it was added to the bill.

The total cost of Schengen visa from India for Spain came up to INR 10107 per passport. This amount has to be paid at the counter in BLS International when you submit your documents. Note that this payment for Spain tourist visa can only be made in cash . They do not accept cards or UPI payments.

Once you pay, don’t forget to collect your receipt with the barcode. This barcode number is your Schengen visa tracking ID – used to track or refer to your application.

Spain tourist visa requirements (Key documents for Schengen visa application from India)

To be honest, this is where your maximum time and focus will be when applying for a Schengen visa for any country. The first time around too, I spent time gathering this list. Every document in the list needs to be printed or photocopied – which honestly is a huge waste of paper.

In my case, since we were applying for a family Schengen visa, the amount of paperwork was triple. Note that you have to follow this document list for every single passport that you are submitting. There is no shortcut to this.

Documents for Schengen visa for Indians

While the Schengen visa requirements for Indians are almost the same across the countries, you must always check the specific country website for the finer details . The Spain tourist visa requirements clearly state that they would like the photocopies to be printed in a front and back manner. (Thank heaven! Less use of paper). The Netherlands visa on the other hand, I believe requires you to fill the Schengen form online.

Here are the key documents required for the Spain Schengen visa for Indian tourists. Every document in the list below is mandatory.

1. Schengen Visa Application form – downloaded from the Spain consulate website

The Spain tourist visa form will have the headings in English and Spanish. Do not use any other country’s Schengen visa form.

Fill in the details exactly as they are in your passport. There is a section on whether you have family in any of the EU nations. Fill this only if you are visiting them or are being sponsored by them. Else skip it.

I recommend a dummy form to be filled out first so that you do not make mistakes in the final form. I also, suggest that you fill this form right at the end – after you have gathered all your documents so that the particulars included are clear.

Use this link to download the Schengen visa form for other countries.

2. Recent and unexpired passport

A valid Indian passport is one of the Schengen and Spain tourist visa requirements

Your Indian passport should has a validity of at least 6 months after your planned date of departure from Spain. A minimum of 2 blank pages has to be there. Take a copy of this for your reference before you submit the original to BLS.

3. Copies of past travel visas or stamps

If you have traveled in the past, you should take photocopies of those visas and travel stamps. Include your old passport if required – especially if you have had a UK, Schengen or US Visa included It adds weight to your application for the Spain tourist visa.

Along with the copies of the old stamps, please carry your last expired passport with you. For both my Schengen tourist visa applications (old and the most recent one), the officer attached the old passport along with my new passport and sent it for processing.

4. The Latest Photograph clicked in a specific format

Schengen passport-sized photographs require a non-smiling face with a full face cover against a white background. If you are wearing spectacles, you will have to remove those or ensure they do not have reflective glass. You need only one – which has to be pasted on the Schengen visa application for Indians.

5. Travel medical insurance

One of the mandates for the Spain tourist visa for Indians is travel medical insurance. In fact, they have two recommended options for the best Schengen visa travel insurance – TATA AIG travel insurance and Reliance. Make sure your policy covers repatriation costs for medical reasons or death, as well as for urgent healthcare and/or emergency hospital treatment for the entire stay.

A key requirement for the Schengen visa for Indian tourists is that the insurance coverage is at least €30,000 or an equivalent amount in Indian rupees.

6. Flight bookings

You have to include a copy of your flight bookings in this docket of Schengen visa documents for Indians. To quote the line from the Spain tourist visa website – “It is advisable not to buy the air ticket until the visa has been granted.” This essentially means that you can get dummy tickets for your trip.

Dummy tickets are air tickets that are blocked in your name for a few days. However, they are not confirmed till you pay for them. A Dummy ticket will have a relevant PNR number and can be issued by a travel agent.

When I sought these tickets, I came by conflicting suggestions where one travel agent said that your visa can get rejected. This is when I called the BLS Spain tourist visa helpline and confirmed with them that the Dummy tickets could be included in the Schengen visa application. I went ahead with the same as it reduced the risk of losing money in case my visa did not come on time.

Alternately, you can book refundable fares (which cost slightly higher) and submit the proof of travel.

7. Proof of stay – hotel vouchers or resident address.

Hotel vouchers or Airbnb bookings are absolutely fine. You can use Booking.com to book at zero advance for the hotels and submit the vouchers for the purpose of Schengen visa for Spain or any other country.

Also, note that you have to show hotel bookings for the entire duration of the stay. In my case, my rough itinerary included at least three places and hence, I had to book three hotels to show the same. If you are visiting any other Schengen country from Spain or before Spain, then you need to show hotel vouchers in that country.

In case you are staying with relatives, you need to get an invite letter from them. Note though that the invitation letter has to be issued by the Spanish police. Other Schengen countries have similar mandates. Do check the relevant websites for this particular case scenario.

Our last trip to Europe also, took us to Italy

8. Financial documents to be included for the Schengen tourist visa for applicants.

Spain or any of the Schengen countries need you to show that you are economically sound enough to handle the expenses of the trip and return back home. For this, you need to include the following –

8.a) Bank statements

You need six months of your savings account statement – duly stamped and sealed by the bank. Most banks like ICICI bank and HDFC bank are happy to stamp and seal your printouts. Alternately, you can just go to the bank and ask them to provide the same.

You also, need to ensure that you have a minimum balance of INR 1,00,000 in your account for a 10-12 day trip . This is per person.

In case you are going as a family or have a sponsor, besides your statement, you need to attach a similar statement from your sponsor (stamped and sealed). For a family travel, between your statement and that of your better half, you need to ensure that the balance showcased in your statements covers the entire family. (kids or parents included)

Note that for the Spain tourist visa, they only accept savings account statements. They were not interested in the fixed deposit statement or proof.

Me in Zurich, Switzerland

8.b) Income tax returns (ITR-V or Form 16) for the last two years

If you have a sponsor, ensure you include their statement as well as yours.

8.c) Photocopy of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card

For kids and students who do not have this, some Schengen countries ask for school or college ID cards along with a letter from the school stating that they are a student there and are going on a vacation with their parents. I took this for my daughter but the Spain tourist visa application did not need it.

8.d) Salary slips for the last three months

This is pretty straightforward for the salaried individual. In fact, during my first Europe trip I was working as a full time employee and it was a breeze. This time around, being a freelancer landed me in a tricky situation.

Given that I do not have a registered company, I did not want to declare myself as a business owner. A business owner would have to provide GST details, company registration etc. I could have declared myself as a travel writer in the cover letter with proof of invites and work for various tourism boards. However, since this was a self-funded vacation and not a sponsored tour, I decided to keep it simple and easy  I just declared myself as a dependent and added my hubby as a sponsor. This is where the next document came handy for both me and my daughter.

8.e) Sponsor letter to be included in the application of Schengen visa for Indians

Sponsor letter for application of Schengen visa for Indians

Here is a copy of the letter that I submitted with my application as well as that of my daughter. It was signed by my sponsor (hubby in my case). As you can see, it details out the relationship, purpose of travel, sponsor finance arrangements and itinerary. You can edit the same based on your requirements.

This sponsor letter format can be used across all Schengen applications.

8.f) Letter of employment and leave

If you are a salaried employee, you need to get a letter from your organization on their letterhead stating that you have been employed in the organization from x date and are going on leave for a visit to Spain.

I got a similar one done from my daughter’s school and also, included her ID card as proof of student. While the BLS visa for Spain took only her ID card copy, I am told that the French consulate insists on the letter.

9) Copy of payment of Schengen visa fee for Indians

This will be provided by the BLS team when you submit the documents.

10) Cover letter

Cover Letter for Spain Schengen visa application for Indians

Last but not least in the Spain tourist visa checklist, is a strong cover letter that details your purpose, itinerary and the documents that you are including in your Schengen visa application. The above image is the cover letter that I included in my visa application for Spain. You can use the same and edit as required for your purpose.

This cover letter is mandatory for all Schengen visa applications from India.

Tips for the Spain tourist visa appointment

Having done my Schengen visa appointment twice, here are some handy tips that you need to keep in mind while booking and preparing for the same.

  • Book for a date at least a month before you travel date. I have already covered details on why this is a better option.
  • When booking a Schengen visa appointment, you can apply as an individual or a family. Picking a family Schengen visa appointment ensures that all the passports and documents are presented in one single bundle.
  • Every appointment slot is for 15 minutes. Make sure you are at the BLS center 15 minutes prior to your slot.
  • There is a Spain tourist visa appointment fee you need to pay. This is around INR 1500 per person. The payment has to be made online while booking your slot
  • There is a privilege counter which includes a one-on-one service. You can book this VIP appointment and you get access to photocopy machines, internet etc along with guidance. This is charged higher. If you have all your documents in place, then I don’t think you should opt for this. It has no bearing on whether you get your Spain tourist visa or not
  • Keep a gap of at least five days before your appointment to gather your documents.
  • Prepare a proper docket for every passport that you are submitting. I kept a Spain tourist visa checklist in front of me and arranged the documents in an order. While stapling the pages of your photocopy, keep each document separate. That is staple only the copies of the passport together, do not staple them with your tax documents.
  • Carry a small stationery kit with a stapler, glue stick and a pen
  • Don’t forget to carry cash for your Spain tourist visa fees to be paid at BLS International.
  • After your documents are cleared, you have to go to biometrics section where they will take a photo of you and register the fingerprints of both hands.
  • After the submission of documents, make sure you have the Schengen visa fee receipt with you. This will have a barcode to check your Schengen visa status online.

Too big for my clogs - Keukehof gardens in Holland - one of the places that I visited on my first Schengen tourist visa

What is the typical Spain tourist visa processing time?

If your documents are in order, you should be able to get your tourist visa for Spain within 15 working days from the date of submission. I, in fact, got it within five working days. In case there is something missing or needs clarification, then the consulate will either email or call you.

15 business days are typically the Schengen visa processing time from India for most countries.

Visiting other Europe Schengen Visa countries

It is common to combine a visit to Spain with a few other European countries. As long as they belong to the Schengen union, you do not need a separate visa for these. Note though – there are rules to decide which country and consulate you have to apply to for Schengen visa in India.

  • The country where you are going to spend maximum time will take priority. It does not necessarily have to be the port of entry. The first time I applied for a Schengen tourist visa, I was visiting 8 countries and though my first entry was The Netherlands, I applied for my visa through the French embassy as I had maximum stay here. I could have applied to Switzerland or Italy as I had the same number of days in these countries but this is where rule two below comes into play.
  • If you have the same number of days in more than one country, then the first country that you are visiting in that list will be the one where you have to apply for your visa. In the order of my journey during the first Europe trip, it was France, then Switzerland and Italy.

The Spain tourist visa for Indians is the same Schengen visa that allows you to visit other European countries like Italy

Types of Schengen tourist visa for Indians

Schengen tourist visas are of four types

  • Type A Visa is the Schengen transit visa that you will need if you are transiting through Schengen nations. These only allow you to disembark at the airport but not leave the airport.
  • LTV visas or Limited Territorial validity visas allow you to visit limited Schengen countries that you have applied for within a 180 day period for a maximum stay of 90 days in total.
  • Type C Schengen Visa allows you to travel across all Schengen nations for a maximum period of 90 days – within a 180-day period. This is what I got for both my trips.
  • Type D Visas are long stay visas for beyond 90 days. Used by students or business travelers. This is not in the scope of our discussion on how to get Schengen visa in India for visiting Europe on a holiday.

Besides this, your Europe tourist visa from India will have another stamp that mentions single entry or multiple entry . Multiple-entry visa means you can enter any Schengen states multiple times within the 180-day validity period. Single entry is only for one single entry during the stipulated time.

Both times, I got a multiple-entry Schengen visa. Your Schengen visa form usually has an option to choose this. Also, there is no difference in the Schengen visa multiple entry cost and single entry cost. Even the Schengen visa processing time for Indians for either of these is the same.

How long is the Schengen Visa for Indians valid?

Usually the validity of the first-time Schengen Visa is between one month to six months – depending on your itinerary. For me, the first Schengen visa was valid for six months as I was visiting multiple countries. This time around for the Spain visa for Indian tourists, I was given a validity of one month as I had a clear itinerary of only one country.

You can get longer Schengen visas provided you have used the short-stay Schengen visas multiple times in subsequent years. For example, 1-year multiple-entry Schengen visa is granted if you have applied for and used your short-stay visas at least three times in the last two years. Remember this does not include three Schengen stays using the same 90-day stay period. You should have applied afresh thrice and used each visa once in the last two years.

Similarly, if you have applied twice for your one-year visa in the last 2 years, you get an extended Schengen permit of 3 years or more.

Westminster Abbey in UK - this cannot be visited on a Schengen visa

Isn’t UK a part of the Schengen visa scheme?

No, United Kingdom is not a part of the Schengen nations. You have to get a separate visa for entering UK

Is it possible to cancel or reschedule the Spain tourist visa appointment at BLS International?

If for some unforeseen situation, you have to change your appointment date, you can reschedule it for free on the BLS website. You can even cancel your appointment but if you do so, you will not be refunded the Visa appointment fee paid already.

Popular belief is that France is the easiest country to get a schengen visa for Indians

Which is the easiest Schengen visa country to apply for as an Indian?

France and Switzerland are believed to be the easiest Schengen visa countries. I did not have any issues with a Spain tourist visa either. You just need to have the right paperwork to get your visa through.

What if I want to go to UK and Spain or any other Schengen countries in the same trip?

This was exactly my situation during my first Europe trip. I planned a visit to both – UK and the rest of Europe. Since I was entering UK first, I applied for UK tourist visa first and only after I got the same, I applied for Schengen Visa through France.

Whichever is your port of entry first, (UK or Schengen), you need to apply for that visa at the earliest. Remember to buffer enough time for both the visa applications. The average Schengen visa processing time from India is 15 days. UK visas for Indians on the other hand, might take a little more time.

I will keep updating this blog post regularly to give you the latest on Spain visa for Indians and other Schengen visas. Do share the post if you find it useful and feel free to ask any queries that you might have in the comments below.

This European Country Offers a Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers — How to Apply

Here's what you need to know before applying for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa.

spanish tourist visa documents required

Eligibility Requirements

Why spain is great for digital nomads, how to apply, moving to spain, traveling around spain.

Remote work is here to stay, and millions of people are embracing the work-from-anywhere lifestyle, often referred to as being a “digital nomad.” In fact, some sources estimate that there will be around one billion digital nomads around the world by 2035. And thousands of those nomads may be headed to Spain.

In 2023, Spain introduced its Digital Nomad Visa, which allows foreigners to live in the nation as residents if they are working remotely for a company based outside of Spain or are self-employed and exclusively use a computer or telecommunication system to work.

Ready to learn more? Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering applying for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa.

Those looking to apply for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa are required to provide proof of income that is “at least 200 percent of the monthly Spanish national minimum wage,” which is approximately $2,704 per month or $32,479 per year, Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website explains . If the applicant travels with family, the first family member must prove “additional financial means of at least 75 percent of the Spanish minimum wage,” or about $1,100 a month. Each additional applicant must show proof of 25 percent of the Spanish national minimum wage.

Applicants must also show a copy of their university degree or professional certificate, confirming that the applicant has “at least three years of experience in his/her business activity” and show proof of working for a foreign company for at least three months prior to applying.

There is also one special caveat for those who are self-employed: “He/she can also work for a company located in Spain, as long as the percentage of this particular work does not exceed 20 percent of the total amount of his/her professional activity,” the ministry explained.

Additionally, applicants must show proof of health insurance that is valid in Spain. Digital Nomad Visa holders will not have access to Spain’s public healthcare system. There are, however, companies entirely dedicated to digital nomad health insurance .

The benefits of working and living in Spain are pretty endless — and I’m speaking from experience. As someone who lived there in 2010, long before the term “digital nomad” existed, and now lives in its next-door country of Portugal, I can personally attest to how magnificent the historic sites, the food, and the culture really are in Spain. But you don’t need to just take my word for it.

“For me, the main draws of Spain as a digital nomad destination are the low cost of living, the beautiful Mediterranean climate, and the vibrant culture,” Allison Sicking, the travel blogger behind Viva La Travelista , shared. Originally from the United States, Sicking spent time in Mexico as a digital nomad before working her way through the Digital Nomad Visa process in Spain. “I studied abroad in Spain in 2011 and absolutely fell in love with the country and the no pasa nada way of life. I knew from that experience that I wanted to live there one day, and now as a digital nomad, I have the opportunity to make that dream a reality. Plus, having easy access to other European countries for weekend getaways is a major plus.”

The cost of living is also an attractive reason to go for this visa. According to Expatistan’s calculator , the cost of living in the United States is 62 percent more expensive than living in Spain. Food is about 40 percent more expensive in the U.S. than in Spain, while housing is a whopping 105 percent more expensive in the U.S.

But you really won’t sacrifice any quality of life for these prices. After all, you’re trading in a more expensive lifestyle for the chance to live in a place that values rest, late-night dining, and savoring great wine — plus, some potential tax savings.

“One of the greatest appeals of the Spain Digital Nomad Visa is access to an improved Non-Resident Income Tax Regime ,” Patricia Palacios, the co-founder of España Guide , a travel guide dedicated to promoting her home country of Spain, explained. “As a result, Digital Nomad Visa holders can pay a 24 percent flat tax rate on income, instead of the standard progressive rate (which can reach 48 percent). You can take advantage of this special rate for up to five years.”

The process of applying for a Digital Nomad Visa isn’t hard, per se, but there is a fee and a lot of documentation involved, and everything has to be precise. This includes the aforementioned proof of employment or business ownership, financial statements showing proof of income, proof of health insurance coverage that specifically covers any medical costs in Spain, and a criminal background check. After submission, the approval process can take several months, so plan accordingly.

“Another advantage of the Spain Digital Nomad Visa is that you can apply both from abroad or from Spain,” Palacios explained. “If you are abroad, you first need to apply for a visa at the nearest Spanish embassy or consulate . This visa is valid for one year, and afterward, you’re eligible for a two-year renewable residence permit.”

Or, as Palacios shared, if you’re already legally in Spain (which you can do on a tourist visa for up to 90 days as an American citizen), you can apply directly for a three-year visa. The application can be done online through the electronic office of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration .

“Either way, after renewing the visa for a total of five years, you can apply for permanent residence. And, after 10 years, there is a pathway to Spanish citizenship,” Palacios added.

Once you’re all approved, you’ll need to visit your local police station in Spain, where they’ll take fingerprints and issue your residence card, which has an additional cost of about 15€ (around $16).

“Regarding the processing time, it takes around two months when applying from abroad. It’s usually about half that time when applying from Spain,” Palacios added.

Palacios shared one more tip: Use the application time as a great excuse to come on an extended vacation, and maybe start exploring which neighborhood you want to call home in Spain.

“Even though it’s possible to apply from abroad, it’s a bit easier and much faster to apply while in Spain,” Palacios said. “Just enter the country with a tourist visa and apply on arrival.”

Once you’ve obtained a visa, it’s time to start looking for a place to live. The housing market in Spain varies greatly by city and by season, just like in the U.S.

In major cities like Madrid and Barcelona , it’s common to find apartment rentals on local listing sites like Idealista or Fotocasa. As Housing Anywhere broke down, the average private room in Madrid will cost around €575 (about $660), a studio apartment is about €990 ($1,070), and a one-bedroom apartment is around €1,500 ($1,625).

However, the website warns that “the accommodation hunt in Madrid is fierce,” especially during the end of summer and beginning of fall with incoming students also moving to the city. According to the site, “The high demand also makes the prices go up. So the best advice we can give you would be to start your housing search as early as May.”

It's also a good idea to learn some Spanish before you move. “Not everyone speaks English, and knowing the language will help daily,” Timon van Basten, a digital nomad in Spain who runs Travel Spain 24 , shared. Van Basten said you can use those new language skills to make friends with locals or other expats, too. “There are many digital nomad and expat groups in Spain for support and socializing.”

Additionally, van Basten says (and I concur) that it’s critical to lean into Spanish culture and its unique pace of life. “Spain has a more relaxed lifestyle, including the siesta tradition, which might take some getting used to,” van Basten added.

Once you’re in Spain, it’s easy to get out and explore. The nation’s high-speed trains and extensive bus network make it simple and affordable to go see the intricate palaces of Andalusia, the modernist landmarks of Catalonia, the beaches along the eastern coast, and more.

There are also plenty of festivals digital nomads can take part in around Spain, including the famed La Tomatina — or “tomato throwing” — in August and the Running of the Bulls in July. Outdoor enthusiasts will also find plenty to do in Spain, including exploring the hiking trails of the Pyrenees, surfing the northern coast of Basque Country, and kiteboarding in Tarifa.
