2021 Tata Safari vs Tata Harrier – Specifications
As we all know, Tata Motors has just launched the Safari as the seven-seater version of the Tata Harrier on 15 th February 2021. Before launch, the Tata Safari was referred to as Tata Gravitas, which is the name of the concept version showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. The three-row version of the Tata Harrier is expected to replicate the success of the existing five-seater model. Since the Tata Safari is finally here with full details, we now can put these two vehicles’ spec sheets side by side to compare between Safari and the outgoing Tata Harrier.
It comes as no surprise that the Tata Safari arrives with substantial dimensional changes. In order to accommodate the third row, Tata Safari is extended by 63 mm in length, measuring 4,661 mm against 4,598 mm on the Harrier. The height of the Safari also sees a growth of 80 mm compared to the Harrier. However, the width and the wheelbase of the Tata Safari remain identical to those of its predecessor.
These changes in size are predictable since the Harrier is a standard 5-seater SUV while the Safari comes with a three-row seating layout, be it a six-seater or seven-seater. For the six-seater configuration, the Tata Safari comes with two captain seats for the second row while the seven-seater version gets a bench-type seat instead.
When it comes to the mechanic part, the Tata Safari brought the powertrain setting right from the Tata Harrier without any modification. It is powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that churns out 170 PS and 350 Nm. Similar to the Tata Harrier, the Tata Safari gets two transmission options, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
New Tata Safari Specs, Features, Colour Options and Other Info
In terms of equipment, Tata Safari carries forward a similar list of features from the Harrier. Tata Safari is offered with the same 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto along with other connectivity technologies. In addition, it gets other highlight features like six-way electrically adjustable driver seat, 7-inch display instrument cluster, a 9-speaker JBL audio system, cruise control, auto-dimming IRVM, multiple drive modes, panoramic sunroof, Xenon HID projector headlights and more. Exteriorly, the Safari comes with 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels instead of 18-inch wheels as in the Harrier.
Similar to the Tata Harrier, the Tata Safari comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, a hill hold control, hill hold descent, traction control, corner stability control, rollover mitigation, electronic stability program, ESP Terrain Response, rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera, and more. Other additional safety features of the Tata Safari include electronic parking brake with auto hold and rear disc brakes.
All-New Tata Safari Vs 2021 MG Hector Plus - Specs And Dimensions Compared
At launch, Tata Safari is offered at the starting price of Rs 14.74 lakh. The top-spec model is priced at Rs 21.25 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price range, it is more expensive than Tata Harrier which costs from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 20.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

2021 Tata Safari Vs Tata Harrier – Specifications Comparison
As of now, the Tata Harrier is the most premium SUV that the homegrown carmaker retails in India, however, the Tata Safari will soon take its place
The Harrier is currently Tata Motors’ flagship offering in the Indian market, and the SUV continues to receive a positive response from buyers. Keeping in mind the Harrier’s fair share of success, Tata decided on introducing a three-row version of the SUV in the country, first showcased in the form of the Gravitas.
However, the Gravitas was later renamed after Tata’s legendary three-row SUV, the Safari. The carmaker debuted the production-ready Safari on this Republic Day, and bookings for the car are all set to be commenced on February 4, 2021.
We all know that the Safari is based on the Harrier, so what factors set the two SUVs apart? Here is a detailed specifications comparison between the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier to help you find out just that –
In terms of size, the 2021 Safari measures 4,661 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width, 1,786 mm in height and has a 2,741 mm long wheelbase. The Harrier, on the other hand, has a length of 4,598 mm, and stands 1,706 mm tall, while the width and the wheelbase of the two SUVs remain the same.
This means that the Tata Safari is 63 mm longer and 80 mm taller as compared to the five-seat SUV it is based on. It should be noted that the Harrier is a strict 5-seater, while the 2021 Safari will be offered with two different seating configurations – a 6-seat layout with captain seats in the middle row, and a 7-seat setup with a bench-type seat in the middle.
Powering the 2021 Tata Safari is the same FCA-sourced 2.0-litre four-cylinder Kryotec diesel engine that performs duties on the Harrier. This engine belts out 170 PS of maximum power as well as 350 Nm of peak torque on both the SUVs, and can be had with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed AT. A front-wheel-drive configuration is standard on both.
On the safety front, the cars come equipped with hill hold control and hill hold descent, ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, traction control, corner stability control, electronic stability program, rollover mitigation, ESP-based Terrain Response mods, rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera etc. Additionally, the 2021 Safari gets an electronic parking brake with auto hold, as well as rear disc brakes.
As of now, Tata retails the Harrier at a starting price of Rs 13.99 lakh, which goes up to Rs 20.45 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom) for the top-end trim. However, the 2021 Safari will obviously entail a premium over that, and we expect Tata to price it from about Rs 14-15 lakh. That being said, the price will be revealed closer to its launch.
Comparison Verdict
Both the Tata Harrier and Safari are cut from the same cloth. Everything from the platform, the design language, features, safety tech as well as the powertrain is the same on the two SUVs. Hence, it all comes down to the fact that the Safari is a three-row SUV, while the Harrier can only seat five.
Tata is offering the Safari with two seating layouts – 6-seat and 7-seat, however, this will also result in a price hike over the Harrier. That being said, the Safari is expected to be retailed at a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the donor car.

Tata Harrier vs Tata Safari: A tale of two SUVs and which is for whom?
- Tata Harrier and Tata Safari are the flagship SUVs from the Indian car manufacturer and have received significant updates. But which one is best for you?
The updated versions of Tata Safari and Tata Harrier were launched in the Indian car market on Tuesday with the Indian manufacturer looking at further building on the overall growing preference for SUVs here. While both Safari and Harrier have been around for some time now, the updated versions are promising a lot in terms of styling on the outside, cabin layout changes as well as feature additions. But while Safari and Harrier sit on the very top of Tata product pyramid, both are meant for a distinct set of buyers.
The differences between Tata Safari and Tata Harrier go beyond the obvious elements of exterior design elements, body dimensions and seat layout. So while it is true that the Safari is a three-row vehicle while Harrier is a conventional five-seat option, the target audience itself is different and so, dictates much of the visual cues on the outside as well as themes within.

Tata Harrier, for instance, was first introduced back in January of 2019 at a time when the mid-size SUV was not as populated as it is today. It has many strong points - and a few drawbacks too, but its biggest point of flex was its dominating road presence. For Martin Uhlarik, Head of Global Design at Tata Motors, the Harrier struck a chord with a younger SUV-buying audience and the more sporty visual appeal of the updated model is to further cement this bond. “The Harrier has been very successful. It has its very own DNA and SUV character, so we wanted to simply improve the existing recipe," he told HT Auto during an exclusive interaction. “When we looked at the number of Harrier buyers and the pattern around it, we saw those purchasing the Harrier were younger or young at heart. In case of Safari , we noticed it was much more of a premium and mature customer base."
Also watch: Tata Harrier or Safari? Which one should you pick and why
While the focus on the updated Harrier is clearly on lending it a sportier visual appeal while not compromising on the muscular character, the Safari's updates are more subtle and sophisticated. Both models get updated front grille and a stretched DRL light signature on the face. But whether it is the more muted colours on the Safari or its upright face, here is the flagship indeed. “When we started work on updating the Safari, the question was ‘how do we communicate that this is a very different product?' This is our flagship," explained Uhlarik. “We wanted its design to be very straight-forward and it is all about detailing. All the lines on Safari are running horizontal and vertical so everything is very strong and structural whereas Harrier is much more sporty with dynamic and angular lines."
The initial response to the design updates on both Safari and Harrier have been largely positive even though both models continue to be powered by a solitary 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor only. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual stick and an auto gearbox. But whereas Harrier would continue to appeal to those looking for an SUV with a sporty yet solid road presence, the Safari is more than likely to still find favour among those with larger families.

Tata Harrier vs Tata Safari
Tata Motors sure has been on a roll of late. Not only have they enjoyed success with their current line-up of cars (Jan 2021 = 27000 cars moved), but even the way that the Gravitas -> Safari rebranding was carried out has been spot on. If only Tata gets its quality right and starts building cars that are free of niggles, problems & rough edges.

Take a look at this wild ad , especially from the 1:20 point & appreciate how the old Safari's theme music has been used. Brilliant stuff:
The Harrier and Safari are practically the same car, but there are some differences between the two. Which one would you choose and why?
Some BHPians would say that the Tata Harrier is the better looking. It's cheaper & that 1 lakh-rupee price difference should take care of your periodic maintenance for a couple of years. The Harrier also gets darker interiors which many BHPians prefer the look of. They are easier to keep clean in India. 17" rims on the Harrier means it has taller tyre sidewalls than the Safari's 18 inchers, and hence offer a slightly cushier ride. And for those BHPians who don't need the last row of seats, why bother with the Safari? Smaller but significant points are that the Harrier's available in 5 colour options (compared to the Safari's 3) and gets 10 mm more GC.

Its sibling, the Tata Safari , immediately commands more respect because of the iconic nameplate it is wearing. Admit it, there are some bragging rights associated with owning a "Safari". IMHO, the Safari is well worth the ~1 lakh-rupee premium, considering all the extras you get. Those 3rd row seats bring loads more practicality & utility. Fold the last row down and it can carry 4/5 people + more cargo than the Harrier. The Safari gets additional features such as TPMS, e-parking brake, auto-hold, boss mode etc. and has the option of captain seats for the middle row. Then, there are the disc brakes on all four wheels which are a serious mechanical upgrade! Do note there is a good chance that the Harrier will receive these features in the future as it is an equally important product for Tata.
