7 Charming Glamping Spots in Texas Hill Country

We research, evaluate and select travel destinations based on a number of factors, including our writers’ experience and expertise, user reviews and more. We may earn a commission when you book or purchase through our links. See our editorial policy to learn more.

From its namesake hills to expansive lakes, twisting rivers, and even numerous caverns, why not embrace the Hill Country’s epic nature with a glamping stay?

Even if you love a good old-fashioned backcountry camping trip, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a bit more comfort and convenience every now and then. Sometimes you just want to surround yourself with nature without having to lug your tent, sleeping bag, and other camping supplies along.

To kickstart your wanderlust into high gear, here are some of the best glamping destinations in the Texas Hill Country, including a geodesic dome, safari tents, quaint cabins, and more.

marula hill country glamping

Why you should stay: It’s a romantic Texas safari with the opportunity for lots of rare animal spotting.

  • Nearest town: Kerrville
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights
  • Rates from: $395/night

Taking inspiration from African safaris, Marula gives you the chance to stay in an authentic safari tent. Of course, what’s a safari without the chance to see wild animals in their natural habitat? Perfect for a romantic getaway, this stay is situated on an actual 800-acre game preserve (the area for the rental is over 50 acres of that).

Grab a comfortable seat on the front porch and see what kind of wildlife appears. And no, it’s not just a bunch of cows roaming these parts — there are rare and endangered species on the grounds. With a fire pit and far-reaching vistas, the outdoor sitting area is also a lovely place to catch the sunset or roast some s’mores.

The safari continues inside the tent with animal prints and mounted animal skulls. But remember, it’s glamping so there’s plenty of luxury to be found too like the canopied king-sized bed, gorgeous soaking tub, and full kitchen.

2. Off-Grid Tiny Cabin

Hill Country Nature Retreat

Why you should stay: Get a digital detox and 360-degree views at this cozy, beautifully designed cabin.

  • Nearest town: Blanco
  • Minimum stay: 1 night
  • Rates from: $145/night

Give up WiFi and get incredible views at this sustainably built off-grid tiny cabin . With every design detail thoughtfully chosen, the whole place may only be 400 square feet, but it feels bigger given the stunning array of floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the cabin.

You also have extra outdoor spaces to enjoy, from a front patio to a little rooftop deck and even a screened porch (which has a cool swinging bench). The first two are particularly great spots to watch those stunning Hill Country sunrises and sunsets.

Don’t be shy to roam around the property a little bit either. There’s a hammock perfect for taking afternoon naps, a fire pit to gather ‘round for late-night chats, and a private trail that leads to a beautiful centuries-old oak tree.

You may be hesitant to hear that this cabin doesn’t have A/C, but the big windows let in a lovely breeze and if you’re here during a chillier time of the year, just light up the wood stove. It’s all a little bit cozier that way anyways.

3. Cute Off-Grid Cabin

Cabin at the Ranch - Harper, TX

Why you should stay: It’s the simple life at this off-grid stay surrounded by wildlife.

  • Nearest town: Harper
  • Rates from: $139/night

This cute off-grid cabin sits on an 84-acre wildlife refuge with lots of trails to wander (really, feel free to explore the property). The area is specifically managed for native songbirds and wild turkeys, and the owners even provide birdseed. Not into birds but still an animal lover? Well, say hello to the mini donkeys, mini longhorns, and deer that live on the property.

As you’re enjoying your Hill Country surroundings, you can’t miss seeing a sunset from the front porch. Once nighttime hits, head to the firepit for s’mores and stargazing. Inside the cabin, things are pretty basic but you do have the option to either sleep on the comfy futon or on the lofted mattress.

There’s no electricity, running water, or toilets here, so you should pack your supplies accordingly. Remember, glamping still involves some level of camping! But you won’t be totally on your own since there’s a small solar generator and a two-burner range (propane tank not included).

Plus, the hosts are always there to help if you need advice on what to bring.

4. NDotto, Resort Glamping @ FireSong Ranch

Ndotto, Resort Glamping @ FireSong Ranch

Why you should stay: It’s glamping at its finest in this lavish, romantic tent.

  • Nearest town: Spicewood
  • Rates from: $450/night

From the outside, NDotto looks like it could be your basic safari tent, but step inside and you’ll discover a truly glamorous glamping experience. On top of conveniences like A/C, heating, and a full kitchen, you get plenty of extra amenities like an electric indoor fireplace, a SONOS sound system, a Nespresso machine, and a spa-like soaking tub… ooh la la.

So, what does the outside have going on? Well, there’s a large stone fireplace, a grilling area, a shower, and a hot tub perfect for those romantic evenings under the stars.

There’s also a large deck where you can soak in all the far-reaching Hill Country views and relax on a well-cushioned hammock. It’s the kind of place that’s hard to say goodbye to when your trip is over.

5. The Barons Wagon @ Barons CreekSide

wagon glamping texas hill country

Why you should stay: You get the unique opportunity to sleep in a settler’s wagon.

  • Nearest town: Fredericksburg
  • Rates from: $192/night

How often do you get the chance to see, let alone stay, in a covered wagon like the settlers used to use? That’s what you get with The Barons Wagon . It’s not a real Conestoga wagon, but it is a replica of the historic wagons people used to travel to Texas centuries ago.

Though there’s no A/C or heat, the wagon is incredibly charming and fun and is actually quite roomy. There’s enough space for a small family between the king-sized bed and bunk beds and even more space for a little seating area. For all your private business, there’s a separate wagon that’s outfitted with a shower and toilet — and this one does have A/C and heat.

While here, you’ll still probably want to spend most of your time outdoors, and that’s easy to do with your private fire pit and picnic table. You’re also right in the town of Fredericksburg, so you can enjoy an evening out too.

6. The Disco Dome

dome glamping texas

Why you should stay: It’s a party for two at this stylish, modern dome that looks like a fancy hotel inside.

  • Nearest town: Fischer
  • Rates from: $385/night

The Disco Dome is the kind of glamping destination you remember long after your visit. Inside the geodesic dome, you can make yourself at home thanks to the high-end furnishings and amenities like the fluffy spa robes and French press. The luxury continues outside with the outdoor rain shower, private pool, and soaking tub.

Getting the party going here is as easy as flipping a switch…literally. The so-called “party switch” gets the big disco ball over the bed spinning.

The disco ball and good music go together like peanut butter and jelly, and that base is covered with the built-in sound system. There are even DJ mixes already loaded in if you need some help figuring out your perfect playlist.

To level up your experience even more, ask the hosts for some farm-fresh eggs for breakfast or request one of their bath packages available in the cooler months.

7. Romantic Yurts So Good

yurt glamping hill country

Why you should stay: Let your worries wash away at this private yurt escape with a great deck.

  • Nearest town: Austin
  • Rates from: $162/night

Put the personality of a hip Austin boutique hotel into a yurt and what you get is Yurts So Good . From the comfortable king-sized bed, you can enjoy a movie on the 50-inch flatscreen TV.

Inside, there’s also a full bathroom with a beautifully tiled walk-in shower plus a kitchenette with a retro mini fridge, freezer, and microwave so you can store away some snacks. And don’t worry coffee drinkers, there’s a Keurig machine to get your day going too.

Out on the deck, you can cook up a meal on the propane grill, eat alfresco in the dining area, and go for a dip in the soaking tub. Whatever you’re doing, you’ll be treated to great views of the surrounding Hill Country since you’re on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful vistas.

While you’re out and about roaming around the property, pay a visit to the horses on the other side of the fence. They’re friendly and always happy to get some attention.

Enjoy the overnight experience at Fossil Rim

Here at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, we offer overnight stays right next to all of our animals.

The Lodge and the Foothills Safari Camp cabins are just about the closest you can get to camping on a safari in Africa without traveling out of Texas. The Lodge itself was originally the house built by Tom Mantzel – the man who started this great wildlife park. It boasts five bedrooms: two on the first floor, two on the second floor and one on the third floor.

texas safari stay

The two on the first floor are named the Hummingbird and Egret rooms, and they each have two full-size beds, a closet, a dresser and a fireplace in them. They share a bathroom at the end of the hallway.

Each of these rooms has a spectacular deck that is easily accessible from sliding doors in each room. The deck overlooks the pasture in the front of the house, where you can see a variety of our animals in their natural habitat, such as herds of addax or sable antelope.

texas safari stay

The common area located on the first floor is full of family-friendly amenities such as books, a pool table, board games and a few binders full of facts about Fossil Rim and the animals here. There is also a wet bar that has beautiful stained glass; this is where the adults can enjoy themselves and have a drink or two. Currently, The Lodge and Foothills Safari Camp are BYOB.

The second floor is where the Parrot and Attwater rooms are located, as well as the house kitchen and another common area for guests to relax and enjoy the view.

The Parrot room is a guest favorite. It is easily accessible with the driveway right outside the private patio area connected to the room. The Parrot room has a king-size bed, an armoire and a full bathroom with a state-of-the-art Jacuzzi tub.

texas safari stay

The Attwater room is just down the hall from the Parrot. This room has king-size bed with an armoire and a full bath. The Attwater is also easily accessible with the driveway coming right up to the private patio, which boasts a great view of the pasture that surrounds the house.

On the second floor of The Lodge, the common room offers a fireplace, television, board games and a library full of informative books on a variety of topics. There is a full kitchen on the second floor, which serves as a great area to have family gatherings and dinner during your stay.

texas safari stay

Wrapping around the second floor, there is a covered deck that allows guests to have an elevated view of the pastures that surround The Lodge and the creek that runs through the property; it is the perfect place for watching our animals.

On the third floor of the house is our largest room, the Peregrine, which spans the entire floor. The Peregrine sleeps the largest amount of people, as it has a king-size bed and a twin trundle bed. There is a dresser, as well as an armoire and a fireplace.

texas safari stay

The bathroom is full-size with a closet, walk-in shower and double-size Jacuzzi tub. The Lodge is an excellent “home-away-from-home” experience with one of the most unique views in Texas.

Further into the park, there is the Foothills Safari Camp. This two-acre, fenced-in area hosts seven cabins, with two twin beds in each. Staying at Safari Camp allows you to take in one of the best views found in our wildlife park. Each cabin is equipped with its own bathroom, shower and vanity. There are two built-in twin beds with an option for a third to be put in between them.

texas safari stay

With one of our main watering holes right in front of camp, it allows a spectacular view of our wildlife. There is a pavilion located at camp as well, with glass walls, so you can take in the nature and scenery with air conditioning.

With two acres to explore, Foothills Safari Camp is perfect for that family trip you’ve been thinking about. There are various outdoor games set up outside to spend time together.

texas safari stay

During your stay at The Lodge or Foothills Safari Camp, access to a drive through the wildlife park, Wi-Fi, Dish Network television and a hot breakfast buffet served every morning are all included in the price. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated with 72 hours of notice, and our lodging staff is present to provide 24-hour service. By advance request when a menu is offered, evening cuisine can be prepared for guests on Friday and Saturday.

texas safari stay

We have one more lodging option, which is located near our education building behind the Overlook. Our eight Wolf Ridge Nature Camp bunkhouses can accommodate up 14 people in each one. They have heat and air conditioning and are the most affordable lodging we have. You just bring your own bedding and toiletries.

Fossil Rim is open 362 days per year, so it is always a good time to stay in the land of the Texas safari. For more information on all of our lodging, check out https://fossilrim.org/plan-a-visit/lodging/ .

What People Say About Texas Safari

GET CLOSE TO NATURE

"The Texas Safari is a great place to get close to nature, while getting closer with family and friends. It's a beautiful little exotic animal park, complete with a camel named Marsha! The building my friend got married in was among several buildings modeled after an old western town. The saloon building is set right next to an adorable little pond. You can walk around the pond and get on a bridge that is draped in flowers during the spring!"  ~ Stormy R

FAMILY RETREAT

"20 of us (5 families) got together for a weekend family retreat. Everyone enjoyed the animals, fishing, and dancing and playing at Western Town. Owners and manager were very accommodating to us and helped with all our needs. Wonderful food at a very German restaurant in the area and enjoyed the local winery and golfing. The grand kids had a very unique experience seeing all the animals and actually feeding the friendly camel."  ~ David

GORGEOUS VIEWS

"Awesome stay!  We stayed in the log cabin and it was so beautiful. The cabin had gorgeous views and very comfortable.  The deck was the place to be every evening!  It overlooks the large stream and fantastic view.  We enjoyed a glass of wine as we talked about each day. Seeing all of the exotic animals was a big bonus! I  would say get out of the big cities and it will calm your soul!  Bring your yoga mats and bicycles!"  ~ Happy

WARM AND WELCOMING

"Our family was looking for a place away from the big city to unwind after Christmas. We wanted somewhere quiet where we could get "unplugged" yet still have things to do. The Texas Safari surpassed everything we could have hoped for!

We rented the beautifully furnished log cabin and it had every amenity you could want for in a luxury rental. The beds were super comfy, there are TV's in all 3 bedrooms and all the furnishings kept with the theme of a rustic (but luxurious!) log cabin. Every night we would make a fire in the fire place and in the fire pit on the large outdoor deck. There's a gas grill on the deck that we would cook steaks burgers on. The cabin is secluded, yet it's a short 5 minute drive to a supermarket and some excellent restaurants. We had a 1,000 acre safari wonderland outside our back door.

Texas Safari used to be a drive through attraction where you would drive through and feed the animals from your car.  Now it is a private preserve for the owners and the renters of their houses.  We loved driving through the property feeding the animals and looking at the exotic wildlife. As if that's not enough, there is a western town with a huge saloon. We took family photos around the town and played pool, foosball, and air hockey inside. They also host parties and weddings in the saloon.

Jack and Nancy are the owners and they were very warm and welcoming. They were there if we needed anything and gave us a wonderful tour of the property and told us about the animals and their breeding programs. We can't wait to come back for another visit to Texas Safari!"  ~ Diane

"AMAZING PLACE!!!

"We had so much fun and Jack was so great at answering questions any time we called !!! He was so informative and helpful we will definitely be coming back!! Luis was great and very helpful giving us all the stuff we needed for our stay. We stayed in the bunk house and the boys raved about being so close to all the animals! The beds were sooo comfy!!! Hubby and I will def be back for or own getaway at the log cabin! Thank you again! The views and memories we made are unforgettable!!!" ~ Fleur

BACHELOR PARTY GETAWAY!

"This is the second time that I have been out to the Texas Safari for a bachelor party. This time I was the best man and knew that this was the perfect getaway destination for my best friend.

The place is absolutely gorgeous and it is in a nice secluded area where all of us guys were able to relax, play sports, fish, swim, hike, and chill. The host was extremely accommodating and always was quick to reply via email or phone on any questions I had. Louis was amazing and quickly brought us a new propane tank, more fishing poles, and showed us around the place.

If I am the best man for any other weddings, I will again plan for this place to be our weekend of paradise."  ~ Benjamin

fantastic resort and retreat center

"Texas Safari in Clifton, Texas is a fabulous place to gather for business, events or a personal stay. Our company gathered for a weekend retreat for our annual Strategic Planning Meeting and this was an incredible environment to have it. We soaked up the sights and sounds of the animals and really enjoyed the magnificent views all around us in the Texas Hill country. We are all looking forward  to our next annual meeting again at this fantastic resort and retreat center."
