Agatha Christie’s ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ at The Churchill Theatre Bromley review

Greg Jameson

‘The Mirror Crack’d’, featuring Susie Blake (Coronation Street) as the famous detective Miss Marple, is currently doing the rounds in a national tour. This week it is playing at The Churchill Theatre, Bromley. The new adaptation, by Rachel Wagstaff, stays reasonably faithful to the 1962 Agatha Christie novel upon which it is based. Any departures serve the story well whilst retaining the spirit of the original author’s intentions.

The Mirror Crack'd

This production, which evokes the period of the 1960s, finds a sedentary Miss Marple resting a sprained ankle at home. She is visited by Chief Inspector Craddock (Oliver Boot) who tells her about a recent unsolved murder. During a party hosted by famous Hollywood actress Marina Gregg (Sophie Ward), a seemingly unknown and insignificant woman, Heather Leigh (Jules Melvin), is poisoned and dies almost instantly. As Marina had swapped drinks with her guest, it looks as though the real target for murder has escaped. Inexorably, events unfold which ensure that the body count grows and nobody is above suspicion. Working with the police inspector, Miss Marple uses all of her powers of observation to unlock the secrets of the past that she believes hold the key to finding the murderer in the present.

‘The Mirror Crack’d’ is a classic Agatha Christie story. It is full of enjoyable red herrings and gives the audience plenty to play along with. It’s fun to guess the identity of the killer and pick up on the clues that are dropped into lines of dialogue. There’s plenty of scope for amateur sleuthing during the interval. Is it the husband? Did the butler do it? Why are two young women acting so strangely around the famous actress? With plenty of suspense, twists and turns, ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ provides a throughly entertaining evening of theatrical entertainment.

The Mirror Crack'd

This production will especially appeal to those who love a good murder mystery and have already enjoyed the many other Agatha Christie tours of recent years. Inescapably, the construction of the story is mechanical, though in adapting it, Rachel Wagstaff deserves credit for bringing out a lot of humour, which last night’s audience appreciated. Love them or loathe them, an Agatha Christie play brings with it many preconceptions, and ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ lives up to them all.

Under the assured direction of Philip Franks, a solid and high-profile cast brings the play to life. Susie Blake is endearing as Miss Marple, and makes no attempt to portray her in the same manner as any of the many screen versions. She’s impressively rock-solid on huge chunks of dialogue, rattling them off as if they are thoughts freshly popping into her head. Her chemistry with Oliver Boot as Chief Inspector Craddock is excellent, and their rapport is emotionally engaging. Joe McFadden is enjoyably showy as the actress’s brash husband and hotshot film producer, and Jules Melvin’s clear diction and sound comic timing ensure that poor Heather Leigh is a memorable murder victim. It’s Mara Allen as Miss Marple’s honest, Croydon-based home help Cherry Baker who rightly wins the lion’s share of the laughs. But it’s Sophie Ward who steals the show. It would be easy to stereotype a leading film actress as someone precocious and divorced from reality, but Ward’s intelligent portrayal ensures that she is humanised. At times, you feel genuinely sorry for her.

The Mirror Crack'd

There are a couple of criticisms. Telling aspects of the story through flashbacks that play out in front of Miss Marple as she remains seated in the background is an original approach. Although a brave departure from linear storytelling, it doesn’t quite satisfy in the final analysis. Perhaps because it leaves our intrepid sleuth outside of the main narrative for a long period of time instead of doing what she does best: poking her nose into other people’s business from the start. Some actors were clearer on their dialogue than others too, which meant a few lines were missed towards the back of the auditorium. Finally, occasional musical interludes proved a touch intrusive, especially when adding atmosphere over dialogue.

In the final analysis, this production of ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ assembles a great cast and delivers a solidly-entertaining whodunnit. It does so with rounded performances and humour in the right places. If you love Agatha Christie mysteries, you’ll want to catch this one at a theatre near you.

I f the idea of Susie Blake as Miss Marple engaging in pontifications about self-harm and the practicalities of same-sex coupling wasn’t on your 2023 theatre bingo card, then you certainly wouldn’t be alone.

And yet, such are some of the wrinkles and pleasant surprises found in Rachel Wagstaff and Philip Franks ’ admirably full-bodied take on Christie classic The Mirror Crack’d .

Setting the scene, things at the outset of Crack’d are quintessential Christie, practically de rigueur. A woman poisoned. A roster of shady supporting characters to fill out the suspect line-up. Overbearing spouses. Hints at secrets of yesteryear. And all pivoting around Blake’s kindly Marple, here nursing a ‘gammy’ leg, left the task of piecing it all together and fingering the culprit.

the mirror crack'd tour running time

There’s a solid Christie whodunnit running through the heart of Crack’d , with enough twists, turns, red herrings and revelations to keep even ardent fans of the genre analysing every line and gesture, comparing theories in the interval, and second-guessing motive and means right up to the final curtain. As a murder mystery, it gets the job done in suitably absorbing fashion.

“As a murder mystery, it gets the job done in suitably absorbing fashion.”

Yet, there’s a depth and resonance to this incarnation of the story that elevates it beyond your typical Christie fare. Wagstaff mines a surprising amount of pathos out of its cast of conflicted, troubled characters, not least of all Sophie Ward ’s glamorous yet wounded movie star, Marina. Sure, there are nudges and hits at the shallow, manipulative beast that is the Hollywood system, but it’s in far more relatable and maternal pains that Ward’s Marina hits home.

the mirror crack'd tour running time

Even Blake’s iconic heroine, Marple herself, is afforded time to see her own pain and journey rise to the fore. For certain, Mirror Crack’d pulls off its murders and malevolence with relish, but there’s just as much to savour and enjoy here in listening to two old friends reminisce about their former lives, and lost loves.

It’s Marple, with an infectious degree of added humanity and heart. And, as alluded to in some of the more contemporary issues and ideas touched upon, even a daring splash of modernity, too.

There’s plenty of levity, as well. The relationship between Marple and ‘nephew’ Inspector Craddock (a splendid Oliver Boot ) in particular offers plenty of zippy back-and-forth and cheekiness between the duo, and in many ways forms the beating heart of the show. But there is, alongside the anguish and the surprisingly moving two-handers, plenty to giggle at throughout.

“There is, alongside the anguish and the surprisingly moving two-handers, plenty to giggle at throughout.”

Strictly champ Joe McFadden pops up throughout as Marina’s film director husband, but in truth it’s a bit part in a show dominated by its women. Ward, as mentioned, is suitably graceful and enigmatic as Marina, completely convincing as the former Hollywood starlet returning to the limelight. Christine Symone is tremendous and increasingly impressive as she peels back the layers of her young ingenue, whilst Veronica Roberts routinely steals scenes – and laughs – as Marple’s old friend and neighbour, Dolly.

Unsurprisingly, Susie Blake is the steady, dependable anchor around which the entire show steers. Her take on Marple is understated, delicate and not remotely showy or overt. She effortlessly channels the very essence of the character, and the disarming, unassuming charm that Christie always wrought as her greatest investigative asset.

A classy production, The Mirror Crack’d looks, sounds and moves with polish and flair. Franks bounces between the present and flashbacks in intuitive and organic style throughout, ably abetted by Adrian Linford ’s rotating, chameleonic set. The odd wobbly fake movie camera here and there aren’t enough to undermine a show that carries the Christie mark of excellence with pride.

The case of the Christie classic can often be considered an easy one to pull off; the queen of crime leaves it all there on the page. And yet, as this confident and intoxicating riff on one of her seminal Marple outings shows, a game cast and clued-up creative team can plumb new depths from even the classics. The Mirror Crack’d is no red herring – a gripping, involving and impressively human story wrapped around a murder mystery classic for this – and all – ages.

The Mirror Crack’d at Churchill Theatre, Bromley

November 24, 2022 Last updated: November 24, 2022 12:57 pm By Alan Fitter

I have to start this review by admitting I’m not a big fan of Agatha Christie’s work. I’ve never read any of her novels as I’ve always felt Miss Marple was twee in tweeds and Hercule Poirot’s moustache-twiddling never tweaked my interest and although I’m a regular theatregoer, I’ve never had the slightest inclination to see the world’s longest running play The Mousetrap . However, one of Christie’s best-known novels The Mirror Cracked From Side To Side with a brand-new adaptation from Rachel Wagstaff is touring the UK this year as The Mirror Crack’d and this week arrived in leafy Bromley so I took the plunge and headed off the splendid Churchill Theatre to see if my mind could be changed.

Joe McFadden as Jason Rudd, Sophie Ward as Marina Gregg in The Mirror Crack'd, credit Ali Wright.

The Mirror Crack’d tells the tale of a murder (well all Agatha Christie thrillers all start with a murder don’t they?). Heather Leigh (played by Jules Melvin) dies while at a party given by Marina Gregg (Sophie Ward) an American actress who has moved into the area with her husband, film director Jason Rudd (Joe McFadden) buying the local manor house Gossington Hall from Dolly Bantry (Veronica Roberts) who is best friends with her neighbour Miss Marple (Susie Blake). The murder is being investigated by an old friend of Miss Marple, Chief Inspector Craddock (Oliver Boot) who tries to stop Miss Marple being involved but fails miserably! Along the way, there’s another murder, that of Giuseppe Renzo (Lorenzo Martelli), the actress’s butler and there’s a near-fatal accident when a spotlight crashes to the ground on a film set. With all this going on, the stage is set for the intrepid Miss Marple to solve the crime and unveil the murderer which (minor spoiler alert), she of course does, giving the frazzled Chief Inspector apoplexy.

If this sounds like the plot of a typical Agatha Christies mystery, then it is. The problem with this production is that it’s all a bit static. Miss Marple has had a bad fall recently and sprained her ankle badly. This means she spends most of her time seated listening to the other characters explain what’s happened off-stage and when she does walk it’s very slowly with a cane. There’s also a lot of exposition and explaining events that have happened in the past as Miss Marple finds out about the murders. There’s a lot of walking aimlessly on and off by characters presumably to give a bit of life to the production but it’s all a bit stately and confined and just makes everything a little clunky. There are also a lot of flashbacks which slow down the action in the second act.

Then as we head towards the climax there’s very little tension as a lot of the time it’s played for laughs although there are one or two funny one-liners. There’s also the subtext of loss which at times deflects from the convoluted plot. Everyone has lost someone and the characters spend quite a lot of time talking about their own particular losses which also ratchets down any tension there may have been. We even learn about Miss Marple’s tragic loss of a suitor in the first world war which explains why over forty years later, she’s still a Miss.

On the plus side, Adrian Linford’s set is superb. It has to be various locations and interiors and the changes are fluid and seamless. There’s also some excellent and exciting cinematic music setting the scene and adding to the atmosphere. And it goes without saying that the acting is of course first rate.

So, whilst this production hasn’t made me an Agatha Christie fan, the audience in Bromley loved it. Christie has sold millions of books, had numerous movies, TV series, and plays produced from her writings and is beloved around the world by millions of people. So, if you’re one of those, then The Mirror Crack’d is probably for you, so do go and see it as it tours between now and early next year.

I may have been a little disappointed but you won’t be I’m sure.

If you are a true Agatha Christie fan don’t go to see the Churchill Theatre production. I thought I was in the wrong theatre. The ITV film is true to the story. I had not thought it a comedy!!! And was disappointed. Completely nothing near the book.

Agatha Christie’s ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ Announces UK Tour Dates

the mirror crack'd

The stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d will tour the UK this autumn.

Adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff, the murder mystery follows Christie’s beloved elderly sleuth, Miss Marple, as she investigates a poisoning, seemingly intended for a famous movie star. Wagstaff describes the play as “a fascinating mystery, packed with a rich constellation of characters, all struggling with loneliness and the long shadows cast by grief.”

The upcoming production will feature Susie Blake of Victoria Wood and Coronation Street fame as Miss Marple, with the supporting cast still to be announced. Reflecting on her casting, Blake said that “to play a bright, independent, older woman is surprising and exciting for the period it was written in as well as in our society today.”

The Mirror Crack’d will tour around seven venues in Eastbourne , Darlington , York , Mold , Northampton , Norwich and Southend-on-Sea from 8 September to 3 December 2022, with more dates still to be announced.

It will be produced by Alastair Whatley and Tom Hackney for The Original Theatre Company. Philip Franks will direct, while Emma Chapman is responsible for lighting design and Max Pappenheim will do sound design.

Published in 1962, The Mirror Crack’d is best known to some audiences for its 1980 film adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury, and Kim Novak.

Tickets for The Mirror Crack’d can be purchased through each venue’s website.

Original Theatre in association with JAS Theatricals presents

THE MIRROR CRACK’D Adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff Directed by Philip Franks

Miss Marple returns to the stage…

1960s England and a wind of change is blowing through the land.

It has even reached the sleepy village of St. Mary Mead. There’s a new housing estate to make the villagers curious and fearful. And even stranger, a rich American film star has bought the Manor House.

Jane Marple, confined to a chair after an accident, is wondering if life has passed her by.

Then there is a vicious murder, and Miss Marple must unravel a web of lies, tragedy and danger.

This adaptation of Agatha Christie’s famous novel brings real emotional depth and psychological insight to a thrilling story of revenge and the dark secrets that we all hide.

But can anything be hidden from Miss Marple, the sweet old lady with mind like a steel trap?

A brand-new production of Rachel Wagstaff’s ( Birdsong, The Girl on the Train ) acclaimed adaptation produced by the award-winning Original Theatre who brought you Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art , the smash-hit comedy Invincible and the acclaimed Birdsong .

Starring Susie Blake as Miss Marple ( Victoria Wood’s As Seen on TV, Coronation Street, Mrs. Brown’s Boys ), Sophie Ward ( A Very British Scandal, Holby City, Land Girls ) and Joe McFadden ( Holby City, Heartbeat and Strictly Come Dancing 2017 winner).

‘Playing Miss Marple is every actors dream over the age of 50. To play a bright, independent, older woman is surprising and exciting for the period it was written in as well as in our society today’ Susie Blake

  • "'The Mirror Crack’d' is essential viewing for those with even a passing interest in Hollywood history."  Chloe Walker : Paste Magazine
  • "Taylor has an uproarious good time as she trades bitchy insults with Kim Novak. Adroit supporting performances are given by Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson as Taylor’s husband and director, and Geraldine Chaplin."  Variety Staff : Variety
  • "An adaptation of an Agatha Christie Miss Marple mystery, with Angela Lansbury as the sweet little old sleuth, it has the vitality of a vicar, yet it’s enormously campy fun."  Entertainment Weekly
  • "It becomes increasingly hard to care as pace, reality, and even believable fantasy are buried under a wreath of ye olde boredom. As always though, Elizabeth Taylor brings a little bit of class to her scenes." BBC
