Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Hybrid Shaft Review

We talk about driver shafts here at THP all the time, and Graphite Design has been a big part of that conversation with their wide range of options under the Tour AD umbrella (check out a full rundown on THPTV  here . However, another area which they offer top of the line graphite options is in hybrids and utilities. 

THP was able to get a Graphite Design Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft in for a closer look and a full round of testing to see just what is being brought to the table.

There is a reason that you see so many Graphite Design hybrid shafts in play across the different Tour’s. Be it in a utility or hybrid, they offer top of the line dispersion and consistency. The Tour AD IZ falls into that same classification while also being a design that seemingly performs better the more you go after the golf ball.

As mentioned, we got the 85 version of the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft in hand for this review. This specific shaft was a stiff flex and build out for testing in a PING G425 Crossover which is a 22.5° loft. Additionally, it was built out to 39 1/8” with a D3 swing weight and Graphite Design’s standard tipping instruction was followed.

Foremost, this particular shaft is one of three hybrid options from Graphite Design with its siblings being the Tour AD HY and Tour AD DI. This is a .370 shaft which has a 3-inch parallel tip section to allow for fitters to adjust the shafts as they see necessary. The profile is the bigger piece of the puzzle here, however, as the 85 has a firm butt and mid-section with a stiff tip. What that means is this is considered a mid-launch shaft in line with its sibling the hyper popular Tour AD DI, where they differ though is the IZ is considered to be the lowest spinning hybrid option from Graphite Design. 

Visually, there is  no  mistaking a Graphite Design shaft, even from a distance the pattern is well known by most golfers no matter which different color/profile they may be looking at. The Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft looks identical to the driver version and is a textured black with white and orange accents. It’s a good looking and classic style, not too flashy, but not subdued either.

Now, before we get into the data and what I saw from the IZ, some of you are surely asking why it was installed into a utility rather than a hybrid. Well, these shafts have become more and more popular in utility irons and at the time of this review I didn’t have a hybrid in the bag any longer, so the utility made sense in that it was a loft which correlates to where most golfers play hybrids used off the tee and turf as opposed to a tee only utility. 

I worked with the Tour AD IZ 85 both on the course as well as time on the Foresight GC2 launch monitor in order to get a more detailed picture as to what I was seeing. While not trying to sound cliché as so many shaft reviews do, the stability of this shaft is what stood out the most to me from a “feel” perspective. Better yet, on the monitor that was backed up with “real” data as the IZ responded to everything I threw at it. In fact, it seemed to perform even better the more I went after the ball, aggressiveness yielded pleasantly surprising accuracy while not compromising the ability to flight the ball down off the tee or to turn it over when the situation called for it.

As is always the case, shaft reviews are tough because not only does the head you plug it into impact the performance, but the individual idiosyncrasies of one’s swing does also. For the first part, the IZ actually helped provide a more dampened experience in a utility head which definitely sits on the “harsh” side as far as feedback is concerned. For the individual swing, it’s why it is important to take the data and feedback presented here and use it as a knowledge baseline to go out and experience the performance for your own swing.

In all, given where my swing is for this part of the year in both speed and consistency, Graphite Design really showed out with the Tour AD IZ. The launch and spin numbers certainly backed up the company’s classification of the shaft being in the mid launch and lower spin range, not to mention drawing back to my past experiences with the Tour AD DI, this did have a flatter trajectory to its peak apex. I know from a personal standpoint, I saw enough in this review period to want to install it into a more familiar head for me and see if the feedback remains the same. 

What is at play here is another example of Graphite Design creating an array of options that offer something for everyone.  Will the IZ fit your needs? True Temper Elevate Tour Shaft

The True Temper Elevate Tour shaft is a bit of an anomaly in today’s steel iron shaft market.

Conventional wisdom tells us that top-tier players are all after low spin and low launch. But one size does not fit all in the game of golf.

I applaud True Temper for going against the grain a bit with the True Temper Elevate Tour: a shaft that is still geared towards better players; but one that promises mid spin and mid launch.

But are these shafts really for scratch players? Let’s talk about it.

True Temper Elevate Tour Shaft Overview

The True Temper Elevate Tour certainly looks the part of a Tour-grade shaft.

It has a very traditional stepped steel design with a polished finish. All the branding is contained within a band in the middle of the shaft – very reminiscent of KBS and True Temper shafts.

Even as a mid weight steel shaft, the True Temper Elevate Tour feels substantial in the hands.

It’s not cumbersome in any way; but you can feel that there will be some power behind your swing so long as you can handle the weight. I wouldn’t describe the feel of this shaft as stable so much as reactive.

If you take a really aggressive swing, you feel it sort of release too early. However, if you control your swing a bit more, it seems to load and release at the perfect time.

So the feel is really dependent on how you swing this shaft. Everyone will have a different experience but it seems that the True Temper Elevate Tour favors a more moderate transition.

Why is the True Temper Elevate Tour So Popular?

The True Temper Elevate Tour was designed with the input of Tour pros who wanted more spin from their iron shafts.

These are tour-weighted shafts with unique launch properties. They are great for counteracting the performance of modern player’s performance irons and their increasingly strong lofts.

I would say that this is what can be attributed to the niche popularity that the True Temper Elevate Tour has enjoyed.

How Does the True Temper Elevate Tour Perform?

The description of the True Temper Elevate Tour shafts as “mid launch” is accurate; but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

I really loved the launch I was able to get from this shaft because it was workable.

Naturally – and with a smooth tempo – the True Temper Elevate Tour wants to produce a launch just above piercing, right in the mid range.

This is a great level for anyone who needs to get their launch up just a bit for more carry.

But I found that I was able to flight the ball even higher when I needed to land soft on the green.

Even with my long irons, the True Temper Elevate Tour shafts allowed my ball to stop dead after one bounce and bit onto the green.

On long par 4’s, I was still able to get launch that was closer to “piercing.” Overall, I was really happy with the flight windows my shots were staying in.

True to the marketing, the True Temper Elevate Tour are also naturally mid spin shafts.

Again, I was really pleased in this department because there was just the right amount of spin for shot shaping. And the spin never got so high that I had to worry about slicing on mis-hits.

Pushes certainly did get wider on mis-hits and ended up further left from the line than what is optimal; but that has more to do with the golfer than the shaft.

You get really good control overall with this shaft.

Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Regular would be a good choice for 80-85 MPH swing speed golfers.

Stiff flex was a good fit for my swing which lays between 86 and 95 MPH.

Extra stiff might be more advantageous for players in the 96-105 MPH range.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The 112g version is for players in the 80-85 MPH swing speed range.

The 117g version is better for 86-95 MPH swingers. The 122g version is for 96+ MPH swingers.

Why is it So Good?

The True Temper Elevate Tour is a great shaft because it offers a really nice combo of launch and spin.

It’s right in the middle so there is some workability; but at the same time, you don’t have to worry about ballooning or slicing.

I thought the True Temper Elevate Tour felt a little hefty in my hands at first but I soon forgot about that after a few swings.

I fell into a groove with it pretty quickly; though it should be noted that I had to  make a conscious effort to dial back on my transition.

Key Features & Performance

The True Temper Elevate Tour features the Vibration Suppression System which mutes vibration on mis-hits.

This technology seems to work as mis-hits weren’t jarring nor were they totally muted.

Long approaches stopped dead on the green like a dream. I was getting some great GIRs with just a slight tweak to my swing.

When you are facing a fast green, you can impart more spin on the wedges. You can also maintain the mid spin rates if you want.

Who Should Buy it?

Is the True Temper Elevate Tour really for top-tier players?

Yes and no. I got optimal performance when I slowed my tempo down. Most scratch players will have an aggressive tempo.

But as long as you can reign it in a bit, the True Temper Elevate Tour will perform very well.

Introduction

Of late, it seems that equipment companies are putting new products on the shelves almost before their tour staff can take the wrapper off.  With the Tour Green and Tour Blue, Aldila chose a decidedly different tactic: they got tour wins (plural) before they announced the shaft to the public.

With 5 PGA Tour wins, the Aldila Tour Green and Tour Blue don’t arrive with hype, they arrive with results.  So will the #1 graphite shaft on the PGA Tour also help you improve your results?  I tested them to find out.

For fans of Aldila shafts, the Tour Green and Tour Blue will not disappoint.  The feel of these shafts, particularly the Green, brings to mind the feel of the original NV and the RIP with their focus on stability.  Neither of these shafts has a hint of twist-y, torque-y feeling to it, even when you really go after it.

Players looking for a little more kick will definitely want to opt for the Blue.  The Green is very stout and only gives a loading-unloading feel when you really attack the ball.  The Blue is responsive to more controlled swings.

Both shafts are understated with a predominantly matte grey color.  The shades of green and blue, respectively, are very cool but hard to describe.  They are closer to matte than gloss, but they have a sparkle to them.  The circuit board graphics are very minimal, as is the branding.

Performance

For this review, I tested both the Tour Blue and Tour Green at 65 grams in a stiff flex.  I found that the Tour Blue was a much better fit for me because the feel is closer to what I prefer.  With a stiff tip and a nice kick in the mid-section, I was able to produce really good launch monitor numbers and hit the ball very accurately.  I was consistently launching the ball around 13* with spin around 2400 RPMs.  More importantly, the shot shape was extremely consistent: a fairly tight draw that started just right of target.

I found the Tour Green to be a very consistent shaft, but not a great fit for my swing.  The Green is a great choice for people with very aggressive transitions, and, perhaps, more club head speed.  For me, the Green’s lack of kick made me feel like I really had to work overtime to square the club.  The launch monitor numbers for the green were still good, as was the dispersion, but not as good as the Blue.  The ball launched slightly above 14* and spin was just over 2600 RPMs.  Some will be surprised that the Green launched higher and spun more than the Blue, but this is the result of the club face being more open at impact.

I believe that with the Tour Blue and Tour Green, Aldila will be a name that is, once again, on the tongue of equipment geeks everywhere.  The different models provide very different feels which will help to fit a wide variety of players, but the common thread is consistency and tight dispersion.

Matt, I’ve been following you since I went online for FT Optiforce reviews. I’m gaming a 440 w the Diamana S+. I picked up the 460 head as well. I recently picked up a new X2 Hot Pro head. I also saw your reviw on the Fubuki ZT. My question is how would you compare the Tour Blue vs the Fubuki Z , both in stiff. Thanks, Jeff

Matt – I recently purchased a Callaway X2 Hot Pro Driver with an Aldila ATX65 Tour Green Shaft(REGULAR). What does the 4.5 mean on the shaft? The shaft is supposed to be a midlow torque, so I don’t believe it means the shaft’s torque. Thanks for your comments on this question!

My bad. What I meant to say was I saw your review on Callaway’s Big Bertha, that comes stock with the Fubuki Z. However I understand you were reviewing the driver, not that shaft. Thanks for the great reviews!

I currently use a Taylor-made burner super fast driver. I am looking to buy a Callaway x-2 hot driver but, i not sure about switching from a steel shaft driver to a graphite shaft driver. i am 61 years old and have a swing speed around 90. I would appreciate your feedback.

I would recommend just going to a store or range and giving it a try. Outside of telling you that graphite will be lighter, there’s not much I can say about the differences you will feel.

Thanks for the review. I’m 59 with a mid-90’s SS, a 6 handicap, a quick transition and medium trajectory. Not sure where I’d be able to test these shafts so I’ll ask. The Tour Green stiff is probably too stout for me unless I go regular. But I’m concerned with ballooning on the regular Tour Blue.

How stout is the Tour Blue stiff?

The Tour Blue feels fairly smooth to me, but that’s obviously personal. If you find a top end club fitter like Club Champion in your area, they should have these shafts available for you to try.

I have a titelist 915 D2 with a Diamana 60 gram Reg shaft and was offered a Aldila Rogue 70 gram Reg shaft 3.7 and 95msi. Iplay off 6 and have a highish ball flight, will I loose distance or will the heavier shaft still be good

The only way to know is to try it or to get a fitting. Anyone who tells you that they can answer that question over the internet is delusional at best.

I have a Tailor made M2 driver and I like the Aldila shafts I kept My trinity shaft 65g R and I wonder if is ok for the tailor made with a lighter driver head or I need to change to the later models like the tour Blue or Green your opinion will be very helpful. Regards Mike

The Trinity will “work” in a lighter head, but you’ll have a lighter swing weight and the shaft may feel a bit stiffer.

It should be around 55 grams, though I couldn’t tell you exactly to the gram.

Has anyone been able to hit this shaft in the G430 driver?  Does it play pretty much the same as the older Tour  chrome.  Is the new shaft still made by UST?

I was fitted into a tour chrome 65 s 2.0 shaft today in my Ping G430 Max.   

I tried all the stock shafts & it’s still the best imho.   

I currently game a Ping G400 with a ping tour 65 shaft, so I wasn’t surprised I loved the new one. It feels the same but even better than the older model.  I really can’t fault it.

I game a Tour 65 Stiff in my G400 Max (set to 8.0) and tried the G430 Max (set to 7.5) with the Tour 2.0 Stiff.  Same stock length.   

The 2.0 felt much softer near the tip and I had trouble with getting it to square up.  The few times I did though, the 430 provided me with lower launch and more ball speed that resulted in 15 yards more total distance than my gamer.  The 2.0 shaft didn't have the same feel to me and I was more inconsistent with it.  

Gunna see if I can pair the 430 Max with a Tour 65 stiff v1 from a G425 and try it again to see if it's actually the shaft that's causing my perceived differences in feel.

Did you try the " PING Tour 2.0 Black 65"?  I would think this would have a stiffer tip.

It didn't look Chrome, certainly a black colored shaft.  So, I'm assuming it was Black.   Is the Chrome the one with a stiffer tip more similar to the Tour 65 1.0?

At a local demo day I tried both the Chrome 2.0 and Black 2.0. The Ping rep said the new Chrome is slightly softer and higher launching than the Tour 1.0 and the Black is definitely stiffer and lower launching. I hit both new shafts and would agree. I have used the Tour 65 stiff for years.

Which one did you like better? I've played the Tour 65 for years and it's been great.

I've hit the black and the chrome. The black is nice, but I really liked the chrome in one flex stiffer. I found the chrome in x flex to feel pretty similar to Ventus Blue in stiff flex which I've played for the last 3 years.

Binson I am in the same situation and curious to hear the outcome of G430 max with Tour 65 v1 vs 2.0?

I usually don't play with stock offerings. But there's enough praise here and elsewhere for me to at least try them first.

driver (all 65x) :  Tour V1 vs Tour 2.0 Black vs Tour 2.0 Chrome

fairway (all 75x): Tour V1 vs Tour 2.0 Black

i'd say my findings pretty much mirror what others have said. The following applies to bother driver and fairway shafts  

The Tour 2.0 Black is pretty stout and although it feels smooth and stable  I just could not consistently load it.  For a stronger player with a quicker transition I think this would be an awesome shaft but not for me. The Tour V1 is much easier to load than the Tour 2.0 Black and has a much better ball flight.  I get similar distance to the Tour 2.0 Chrome. So far consistency seems better with the Tour V1 vs V2 Chrome. V1 Feel is a little stiffer and not as smooth as 2.0 Chrome 

The Tour V2 feels the best by far and I think I am generating the most club head speed with it as well as the best launch. My concern is that it's a bit spiny  I think this is the shaft I want in my driver and fairway assuming spin is good.

Really need to get on Trackman this week to do 2.0 Chrome vs V1 comparison. Right now without #s  I could happily play either.  I'll report back when I get data

I’ve played Ping drivers most of my life and never thought of switching to anything else.  I wanted something new to look at and sold my G400 Max (like an idiot) with a Ping Tour 65 S and bought a TaylorMade Sim Max and have hated it since day 1.   From what I remember of the 1st Ping Tour 65 S was that it was pretty boardy and low launching?    

Im going to get the new G430 Max 9° with the Ping Tour 2.0 Chrome 65 to go with it, but can’t decide what flex. I’ve read quite a bit about them and watched all the YouTube videos I could find, and from what I gather, most people feel that the new Chrome 2.0 is a little more lively with a softer tip?   My driver swing speed averages around 108-110 with a ball speed around 153-156 and the few times I’ve hit them (only inside on simulators unfortunately) I can’t feel or see much difference between the Tour Chrome 2.0 65s and 65x.  I wish I had the opportunity to hit them outside at a range and compare the two.  

I’m leaning towards the 65x, but does anyone have more feedback on these Chrome 2.0’s or which way they think I should go?

The Tour Chrome is a very good shaft by any measure. Many shafts, as you progress in weight and/or flex, loose their continuity of feel. A side effect of this is that it makes trying to discuss them as a family pointless.

The Tour Chrome maintains its generic feel across the flex models, which is why they feel the same to you. They’re supposed to, and the engineers and designers of the model were sophisticated and skilled enough to make that happen.   

If you were to hit them on a quality launch monitor, you (or at least I) will see that they evolve in launch and spin quite linearly across the flex versions. For  me at ~100 mph, the S gives very close to theoretical optimal numbers. For you, S could work as well if you tend to have a lower than average launch. However, while the 430 doesn’t launch as high its G predecessors, it’s still on the high side of most drivers out there. Probably X.

Was fit to a chrome 2.0 s with g430lst love the shaft only issue the trim weight was low for my liking. Put lead tape on it tried different weights ended up adding a 15 gram tour lock opti weight in shaft pushed as far down as possible and it’s the best I have hit in years note previous driver was g425 max with iz7 s

I've been playing with the G400max with a Diamana Blue since it came out and it is awesome. I tried out the G430 with the Tour 2.0 65 Stiff at the driving range and the ball was coming off the face hot and better than the G400max. I couldn't believe it. Now to try it out with a good ball on the course. I did not think anything could be better than the 400max. I won't be selling the g400 though, it is the best driver I have ever owned. I'm 67 with a swing speed around 90-93 mph.

4/1/24 I had V1 in a G30 driver and that's what led me to the Diamana and then in the g400max it was amazing. I have the g430 with 2.0 and I love the soft tip. It's easier to hit. I tried a 9 gram weight and it was superlight, so I did the 15 gram and it worked. With the g400max and now the g430 2.0 driving is the best part of my game.

    The only shaft they had available was the Ping Tour 173-85 and I got it in a stiff. I'm a 103-105 MPH with a driver, nothing crazy fast and I'd say overall a mid to high flight trajectory. I cannot get this thing in the air high enough and it feels boardy after multiple range sessions and getting it out on the course.
