Longwood Historical District
David Dunlap, writing for The New York Times on May 8, 1982, described Longwood as âa community born in the 19 th century and composed of homeowners, of acquaintances who know every face on the block, of people who have lived in one house for 30 or 40 years.â Longwood has little in common with the prevailing image of the South Bronx. It was originally incorporated as the township of Morrisania in 1788. In 1790, landowner Lewis Morris offered his land for the site of the United States federal capital. Morris was not taken up on his offer and in 1874 the area was eventually annexed to the Bronx. âLongwood contains some of the best examples of the turn-of-the-20 th -century architecture that transformed the Bronx into an urban extension of Manhattan. The houses were designed primarily by Warren C. Dickerson, an architect noted for the beauty and utility of his residences. âMost all of the two- or three-family houses in Longwood come in pairs â bay-front twins joined by their roofs, many of which are capped by cone-shaped peaks,â Dunlap said. âDifferent pairs have their own nuances, but the ensemble is unusually and pleasantly harmonious.â Often credited with revitalizing New York Cityâs faith in the South Bronx, Longwood has been called âthe oasisâ by longtime resident Thom Bess. https://www.nypap.org/preservation-history/longwood-historic-district/
Mott Haven has three designated Historic Districts: Mott Haven, Mott Haven East and the Bertine Block, all of which boast beautiful and intact rowhouses, as well as houses of worship. The revival of communities like Mott Haven, in the southwest corner of the borough, over the past decade has signaled past may be prologue, and that the future of the Bronx could be just as bright as it seemed in the first decades of the 20 th Century. The nook's rebirth actually goes back decades, but has steadily accelerated since 2013. Mott Haven's vibrant neighborhood, which is just steps away from locally owned restaurants, such as Beatstro (a hip hop & meet speakeasy themed restaurant) , Chocolate Cortez, Maisonnetta, Bricks and Hop and more. Â Get your Bronx swagger at the Bronx Native Shop and for all you who love to read, make sure you visit Lit Bar. Â So much to explore. Â Youâll truly want to come back! https://hdc.org/buildings/mott-haven/
Wakefield is a vibrant neighborhood located in the northern part of the Bronx, New York City. It is named after the Wakefield family, who were early settlers in the area. The neighborhood is primarily residential, characterized by tree-lined streets and a mix of single-family homes, apartment buildings, and multi-family houses. Wakefield has a strong sense of community, and residents enjoy a suburban-like atmosphere within the bustling city. The neighborhood is known for its rich history and cultural diversity, with a mix of different ethnicities and Caribbean culture. The neighborhood of Wakefield in The Bronx has been home to several notable individuals who have left their mark on various fields. One famous resident is hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh, who grew up in Wakefield and became known for his beatboxing skills and influential contributions to the genre. Another notable figure is actress and singer Kerry Washington, known for her roles in films like "Django Unchained" and the hit television series "Scandal." Wakefield is also the birthplace of award-winning actor and comedian Tracy Morgan, recognized for his performances on "Saturday Night Live" and the television show "30 Rock." Additionally, renowned jazz musician Roy Haynes, who has played alongside greats like Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, also hails from Wakefield. These talented individuals showcase the neighborhood's rich cultural heritage and the significant contributions made by its residents in the world of arts and entertainment https://www.cityneighborhoods.nyc/wakefield
NY Botanical Garden
Established in 1891, The New York Botanical Garden is located on a 250-acre (100 ha) site that contains a landscape with over one million living plants; the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a greenhouse containing several habitats; and the LuEsther T. Mertz Library, which contains one of the world's largest collections of botany-related texts. As of 2016, over a million people visit the New York Botanical Garden annually. NYBG is also a major educational institution, teaching visitors about plant science, ecology, and healthful eating through NYBG's interactive programming. Nearly 90,000 of the annual visitors are children from underserved neighboring communities. An additional 3,000 are teachers from New York City's public school system participating in professional development programs that train them to teach science courses at all grade levels. NYBG operates one of the world's largest plant research and conservation programs. NYBG was established in 1891 and the first structures on the grounds opened at the end of that decade. Since 1967, the garden has been listed as a National Historic Landmark, and several buildings have been designated as official New York City landmarks. https://www.nybg.org

Cyclists take part in 29th annual Tour De Bronx
Cyclists took off and pedaled through the Bronx, starting at 161st Street and Grand Concourse, to make their way to the New York Botanical Garden for the annual Tour De Bronx Sunday.
âIt was actually the first time I took out my bike this season, so you know Iâm really proud. Iâm proud of everyone here,â said Jody Ray, who participated.
What You Need To Know
Organizers said this is the largest free bike ride in new york state cyclists had the option to complete a 40, 25 or 10-family-friendly-mile ride more than 4,000 cyclists took part in the event sunday along the route, cyclists made stops at cultural destinations in the bronx, including parks and 1520 sedgwick avenue, the birthplace of hip-hop.
More than 4,000 cyclists took part in the 29th annual tour.
The event takes cyclists throughout the Bronx to highlight the boroughâs cultural destinations while also promoting health.
âWe are feeling the love and spirit of all of these incredible Bronxites that health is a fun priority here in our borough and weâre going to take it on together,â said Sulma Arzu-Brown, executive director of the Bronx Tourism Council.
Cyclists could choose to do a 40, 25 or family 10-mile ride, giving people options depending on their experience level.
âWe have worked on this for months to encourage safe cycling for all of our bicycle riders across the borough from our advanced to the intermediate to the very beginners thatâs why we added a 10 mile ride this year,â said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
The tour gives cyclists the chance to pass through picturesque landmarks of the borough â including Roberto Clemente Park and 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the birthplace of hip-hop.
Tanawat Ludkr-Uske does the tour year after year and has a few favorite spots to visit.
âRiding to Orchard Beach is lovely. The stop and Van Cortlandt Park are also nice,â said Ludkr-Uske.
This tour is a way for people to enjoy the views of the Bronx while also getting quite the workout, especially for Ray and her daughter taking part for the first time.
They said they plan to participate again.
âIt was fun. The hills were scary, but other than that, it was great,â Ray said.
Organizers said this is the largest free bike tour in New York state.
They also said they will start planning for next yearâs event in June.
The 28th annual Tour De Bronx is back Oct. 23, capped at 1K participants
On Sunday, Oct. 23, the 28th annual Tour De Bronx is back, giving participants the free opportunity to cycle through the borough’s historic districts, greenways and waterfronts with hundreds of companions.
The event, which was founded in 1994 by the Bronx Borough President’s office and the Bronx Tourism Council, has drawn thousands of riders in past years but will be capped at 1,000 participants this year . Borough President Vanessa Gibson said the limit on riders is part of the process of returning to normalcy as the city emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the group ride is a peek at pre-pandemic days, with the past two years offering scaled-down, virtual self-guided rides where cyclists could team up with others to conquer one of three routes on their own.
This year’s 25-mile ride will start off at 10 a.m. at East 161st Street and Grand Concourse and finish at the New York Botanical Garden, where participants will be greeted by a free festival and concert. There will also be self-guided virtual 10- and 40-mile tours for those who wish to under- or over-achieve.
According to Gibson, the tour welcomes both skilled and unskilled cyclists — she identified herself as the latter and said she will be participating. The event also promotes alternative modes of transportation and healthy living, she said, pointing to health disparities in the Bronx.
âThis is all about health and wellness,” she said at a press conference at the Castle Hill YMCA on Thursday announcing this year’s tour. “And we know that as we talk about food equity and food access and food justice, as we talk about quality health care and stable housing, we also have to talk about alternative modes of transportation. They all work hand in hand together when you talk about building healthy neighborhoods, stabilizing our families and really creating the access and opportunity that we truly know is so important.â
Assemblymember Kenny Burgos, a Soundview Progressive, encouraged people to sign up and explore the beauty of the Bronx. A cyclist himself, he pointed out that the popular annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour through NYC barely touches the Bronx, so Tour De Bronx gives riders a better opportunity to see the northernmost borough.
Marcos Crespo, the senior vice president of community affairs at Montefiore (one of the Tour De Bronx sponsors), emphasized that the group ride is part of an effort to improve health outcomes in the Bronx. The Bronx is notorious for ranking last out of the 62 New York counties in the County Health Rankings.
Register for the ride on the event’s Eventbrite page, which can be accessed through the Bronx Tourism Council website .

29th Tour de Bronx offers routes for all cyclists
T HE BRONX (PIX11) â The biking community was beaming with enthusiasm Sunday at the start line on Grand Concourse during the 29th installment of the Tour de Bronx cycling event.
âThis is my first time riding. Iâm excited to do it. Iâm doing it with my boy, rocking out,â said first-time participant Paul Ramirez.
More than 4,000 participants show up for the tour that takes them through the boroughâs neighborhoods and historic points.
âItâs a beautiful opportunity to boost tourism,â said the Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
There are three routes available: a 10-mile, a 25-mile and a 40-mile route. So, beginners and pro cyclists can all participate.
âIt is a beautiful day. We are all out getting to know each other, getting in shape, and showing the Bronx is the place to be. Letâs get it,â said Andrew Abner.
Some participants said the tour is also a chance to showcase how the roads can be improved.
âItâs really wonderful to see the borough in this way from a bicycle one to enjoy the borough and all the things that we have but also to talk about the serious needs we have as a community,â Sean Garcia said.
âIt has come a bit of a way since I was a kid, but there is still a long way to go. Here on the grand concourse, there were 18 cars parked along the bike lane. Itâs so pivotal for our community, so many people rely on it as a mode of transport,â said tour participant Julia Ledee.
A way of getting around that many here say brings wellness in many ways.
âIt lifts your spirit. It gives you physical and mental the best you can ever be. And Iâm very happy that Iâm able to do this,â said Edna Davoll.
Cyclists are encouraged to take pictures along the route and share them on social media with the hashtag #BronxTourism

Participants in the 40-, 25- and 10-mile event took advantage of refreshing ârest stopsâ serving fruit, water and other healthy hydration options. After a 9 a.m. start from 161st Street and Grand Concourse, the first group of riders crossed the finish line at the New York Botanical Garden at noon, cheered by Montefiore Einstein volunteers as they arrived. Cyclists were treated to restorative yoga classes and Montefiore Einstein-branded gym towels after the race.
The largest free cycling event in the state, the Tour de Bronx is a hallmark of autumn festivities and a source of local pride for the communities we serve. Our partnership in support of the race dates back more than a decade, and many Montefiore Einstein clinicians, staff, faculty and medical students are among the throngs of riders each year.
âThe Tour de Bronx is a perfect example of free, fun, family-friendly physical activity that we encourage our community members to engage in. Montefiore Einstein was proud to support the ride again this year, and we congratulate Bronx Borough President Gibson and the Bronx Tourism Council for continuing this long-standing tradition in the Bronx,â said Yianna Justo, Director, Office of Community Affairs.Â
Congratulations to all who participatedâas cyclists, volunteers and enthusiastic cheerleadersâto make the 2023 Tour de Bronx a truly fun-filled and memorable event.

Tour de Houston bicyclists urge for long-term measures to improve rider safety on city's roads
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Thousands of bicyclists took off from downtown Houston Sunday morning for the 17th annual Tour de Houston , a ride that travels through some of the city's most scenic areas.
Participants were in good spirits as they were greeted with beautiful weather at the starting line on Avenida de las Americas, right next to Discovery Green. Mayor John Whitmire joined Apache Corporation, the event's sponsor, to send off each of the three groups, riding in the 20, 40, and 60-mile routes.
The ride almost didn't take place this year.
Back in January, the Mayor's Office of Special Events preliminarily canceled the 2024 event due to a lack of funding. Whitmire said this was done without his consultation and when he found out, he explored other options to keep the event going.
The longest route takes participants through Houston's historic neighborhoods, vibrant districts, and parks before going all the way down to Clear Lake Park in Seabrook. The intersections along the way were not closed, but manned by traffic officers.

While the event allowed bicyclists to ride safely on Houston's roads on Sunday, some riders shared with ABC13 some of the long-term measures they'd like to see to make the city more bike-friendly.
"If they could connect the bike trails together to make even long trails, that would be the best thing the City of Houston could do to improve biking in the city, in my opinion. Connect the widest trails, like White Oak and Spring Creek. Those kinds of mega trails," Ulises Martin said.
"A clearly marked lane for bikes. We do know that we have to share with cars because the City of Houston is so car-oriented. Make a better effort of campaigning to let motorists know to be aware of cyclists," Phi Nguyen said.
Data obtained by ABC13 shows 13 cyclists died in accidents in Harris County in 2023. ABC13 asked the mayor where city officials stand on the issue of bicyclist safety.
"We're growing at a rapid rate. Our general mobility is very important. We've done great things along Allen Parkway. We need to make sure that there's a safe passage in Memorial Park. So there's a lot of things we still have to do," Whitmire said.
Meanwhile, organizers said proceeds from Tour de Houston will go towards the city's RE-Plant Houston Program, which helps plant thousands of trees and reforest parks and greenspaces.
