Top Solo Traveler Cruises Without Single Supplements: A Guide

by Judith Eve | Mar 10, 2024 | Destination Guides & Ports

norway cruise no single supplement

Solo travel is an exhilarating adventure, offering the freedom to explore the world at one's own pace. Yet, the thrill of setting sail alone can often be dampened by the dreaded single supplement fee, making solo cruising seem like a luxury reserved for the few.

But there's good news on the horizon for solo adventurers. A wave of cruise lines has begun to embrace the solo traveler, offering cruises with no single supplement. This means you can enjoy the serene beauty of the ocean and the excitement of new destinations without the extra cost.

Whether you're a seasoned solo voyager or contemplating your first solo trip, the world of cruising is becoming more accessible and inviting. Let's dive into the world of solo traveler cruises with no single supplement, where the journey is just as thrilling as the destination.

Understanding the Single Supplement Fee

When planning a solo cruise, travelers often encounter what's known as the single supplement fee . This fee is an additional charge imposed on solo travelers booking a room or cabin designed for two people. The reason behind it is straightforward: cruise lines traditionally price their accommodations based on double occupancy. Therefore, when only one person occupies a room, the cruise line potentially loses out on revenue that could have been generated by a second occupant.

The single supplement fee can vary significantly, sometimes costing up to 50% to 100% of the room's cost, effectively doubling the expense for a solo traveler. This financial hurdle is a major concern for those longing to explore the world by sea without a companion. It's not merely an extra charge; it becomes a barrier to entry for many.

However, the landscape is shifting. A growing number of cruise lines are acknowledging the solo travel trend and adapting their pricing strategies accordingly. No single supplement cruises are emerging as a popular solution. These cruises offer solo travelers the chance to enjoy their journey without the burdensome fee, making the adventure more attainable and enjoyable.

Below is a brief comparison of single supplement fees across several cruise lines:

The introduction of solo traveler-friendly cruises is reshaping the experience, creating opportunities for individuals to embark on maritime adventures with ease. As the trend grows, the hope is more cruise lines will join the movement, further breaking down the financial barriers that solo travelers face.

The Rise of Solo Traveler-Friendly Cruise Lines

norway cruise no single supplement

In recent years, the travel industry has witnessed a significant shift towards accommodating solo travelers, especially within the cruising sector. Recognizing the growing demographic of individuals seeking adventure on their own terms, several cruise lines have started to roll out initiatives specifically designed to welcome solo travelers without the burdensome single supplement fees. This trend is not just a nod to inclusivity but also a smart business move, tapping into an untapped market of eager explorers.

Traditionally, the cruising experience was tailored towards couples and families, with pricing and accommodations reflecting this focus. Solo travelers were often left to grapple with additional costs that made solo voyages less appealing. However, the tide is turning. A number of cruise lines have begun to introduce ships with cabins specifically designed for single occupancy, boasting amenities on par with their double occupancy counterparts. These solo cabins are not only cost-effective but are also stylishly designed, offering the same luxury and comfort expected on a premium cruise.

Moreover, the introduction of dedicated solo traveler activities and social events on these cruises fosters a sense of community and connection among single travelers. From cocktail mixers to group excursions, these activities are tailored to enhance the solo cruising experience, ensuring that individuals traveling alone have ample opportunity to meet fellow adventurers.

As more cruise lines adopt solo-friendly policies and infrastructure, the solo traveler is no longer an outlier but a valued guest with a range of options tailored to their unique needs. The movement towards embracing solo travelers is a testament to the evolving nature of travel, reflecting changing societal trends and the desire for more inclusive and accommodating experiences. The progression of this trend holds promising prospects for the future of solo travel, signaling a more dynamic and diverse cruising industry ahead.

Benefits of Cruises with No Single Supplement

norway cruise no single supplement

Solo cruising has always been an alluring prospect for those looking to venture out onto the seas on their own terms. However, the financial implications of single supplement fees often dampened the enthusiasm of potential solo travelers. With cruise lines now waiving these fees, the experience has been transformed. Here are key benefits that come with choosing cruises without single supplements.

First and foremost, cost savings stand out as the most immediate benefit. Traditionally, solo travelers had to pay almost double the fare to accommodate for the unused space in a double occupancy setting. Without these fees, individuals can save significantly, making luxury cruising more accessible for everyone.

Beyond the financials, cruises without single supplements foster a community of like-minded adventurers . Since these cruises attract solo travelers, it's easier for guests to meet others who share similar interests and travel styles. Many cruise lines have recognized this and now organize events specifically for solo travelers, enhancing the social aspect of the journey.

Tailored experiences are another compelling advantage. Cabins designed for one and activities targeted at solo travelers mean that every aspect of the cruise is crafted with the individual in mind. From dining options that don't enforce the communal table setting to excursions aimed at solo explorers, these cruises understand and cater to the unique needs of their guests.

Lastly, the sense of empowerment and independence that comes with solo travel is amplified on these cruises. Travelers have the liberty to plan their days as they wish, without the need to compromise. Whether it's choosing to join a group activity or spending the day lounging by the pool with a good book, the choice is entirely theirs.

The evolution of cruise lines to accommodate and encourage solo travelers with no single supplement fees is a testament to the industry's adaptability and commitment to inclusivity. It's clear that these benefits not only enhance the solo travel experience but also pave the way for more personalized and gratifying adventures on the high seas.

Tips for Solo Travelers Booking Cruises

Booking a cruise as a solo traveler can be an exhilarating experience, but it's important to navigate the process smartly to maximize enjoyment and value. Here are some essential pointers:

  • Research is Key : They should start by researching which cruise lines offer no single supplement deals as these can significantly reduce costs. Websites and forums dedicated to solo traveling are great resources for finding up-to-date information and reviews from other solo travelers.
  • Early Booking or Last-Minute Deals : To snag the best deals, solo travelers ought to book well in advance or keep an eye out for last-minute offers. Cruise lines sometimes drop single supplement fees closer to departure dates to fill up cabins.
  • Deck Plan Awareness : Understanding the layout of the ship can help solo travelers choose the right cabin. Some cruise lines offer cabins designed specifically for solo travelers which are strategically located, providing easier access to the ship's amenities and social areas.
  • Join Social Groups : Many cruise lines have social groups and events tailored for solo travelers. Participating in these can enhance the sense of community and make it easier to meet fellow travelers with similar interests.
  • Stay Flexible : Staying flexible with travel dates and destinations can lead to better deals for solo travelers. Off-peak seasons usually see a drop in single supplement charges, making luxurious cruises more accessible.
  • Consult with a Specialist : Talking to a travel agent who understands the needs of solo travelers can provide invaluable insight. They're often aware of the best deals available and can recommend cruises that offer the most rewarding experiences for solo adventurers.

By keeping these tips in mind, solo travelers can navigate the booking process effectively, ensuring a memorable and cost-efficient cruising experience.

Exploring Destinations on Solo Traveler Cruises

Solo traveler cruises provide an unparalleled opportunity to explore the world's vistas, each with its unique charm and adventures. When choosing a destination, solo cruisers often seek places that offer a blend of cultural richness, scenic beauty, and opportunities for personal growth. Popular destinations for solo traveler cruises include the Mediterranean for its historic ports, the Caribbean for its vibrant cultures and stunning beaches, and the Norwegian Fjords for their breathtaking natural landscapes.

Embarking on a solo cruise means you’re the master of your itinerary. You can dive into the local cuisine, wander through ancient ruins, or simply bask in the sun on a secluded beach. Many cruise lines offer excursions designed with solo travelers in mind, ensuring you experience the essence of each port while providing opportunities to connect with fellow passengers.

Solo travel doesn't mean you have to be alone unless you choose to. Onboard social events specifically for solo travelers are commonplace. These events range from welcome mixers and group dinners to exclusive tours, making it easy to meet like-minded individuals. For those who cherish solitude, the beauty of solo travel on cruises is the freedom to join in or opt out as you please.

The number of solo cabins and dedicated solo activities varies greatly among cruise lines and ships. It's essential to research and possibly consult with a travel specialist to find the cruise that best meets your personal travel style and needs. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, there’s a solo traveler cruise with no single supplement that’s right for you.

Cruising solo means only having yourself to please – with a whole cabin to yourself. Where you eat, which excursions you join, when you go to bed. It’s all up to you.

Stay on deck all night and watch the Northern Lights. Skip lunch in favour of the hot tub. Bus tour instead of kayaking. Stay in your cabin with a book. Or crochet and chit-chat with locals in the bar all day. You are free to choose. This is your voyage.

FAQs for solo travellers

Does hurtigruten offer single cabins.

Hurtigruten does not offer specific single cabins for solo travellers. This means that, as a solo traveller, you’ll have a cabin big enough for 2-3 guests.

Does Hurtigruten have group trips for solo travellers?

We do not offer group trips, but we do have partners who set up tours for solo travellers aboard our voyages.

Is it more expensive to travel solo?

Some of our sailings have a single supplement, but we also offer a single supplement waiver on selected sailings throughout the year. The single supplement waiver means that you won’t pay anything extra for travelling alone. You can book a voyage for the same per-person price as if you were travelling in a pair.

Is it lonely to travel solo on a cruise?

Travelling solo on a Hurtigruten ship doesn't mean you'll feel lonely. Our voyages attract a diverse group of travellers, and the social atmosphere on board is famously friendly and relaxed.

Many solo travellers find it easy to chat with fellow passengers during meals or when taking part in optional excursions together. Our Coastal Experience Team also organise activities, lectures, and gatherings that create plenty of opportunities to meet new people.

Are there any special solo traveller events on the ship?

On many of our longer voyages, w e invite all solo travellers to an informal get-together in the ship's bar, so you can grab a drink and get to know your fellow passengers.

Is it safe to travel solo in Norway?

Yes, Norway is considered a safe country for solo travellers, and frequently ranks as one of the best countries for solo travellers. It has a low crime rate, well-developed infrastructure, and a friendly, sociable culture that is welcoming to visitors. Add in the natural beauty and it’s no wonder why Norway is such a popular destination for solo travel.

How do I book a solo cruise with Hurtigruten?

Hurtigruten Cruises Offers Solo Travelers NO Single Supplement

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: June 7, 2021

If you are a regular reader of Cruise Maven, you know I rarely write about a cruise line’s special offers. But when I saw Hurtigruten’s “No Single Supplement” cruise promotion for solo cruisers , I had to investigate. Here’s what I found.

norway cruise no single supplement

Choose from Norwegian coastal cruises or expedition routes to the Arctic, Antarctica, Alaska, even the Northwest Passage with NO single supplement.

Norwegian Coastal cruises

Hurtigruten is offering no single supplement on four of its most popular Norwegian coastal routes. These include:

  • The Roundtrip Cruise – from Bergen, Norway
  • The Cruise North – Bergen to Kirkenes
  • The Cruise South – Kirkenes to Bergen
  • Norwegian Discovery – Bergen to Kirkenes to Trondheim

The Roundtrip Cruise, Hurtigruten’s 12-day classic coastal cruise, includes visits to 34 ports of which most are above the Arctic Circle. And with most of the sailings with no solo supplement are in late spring and summer, that means more daylight to see and do more along the way.

Shorter cruises include both the Cruise North and Cruise South itineraries. With a choice of ships, cruises are 7-days and itineraries are from either Bergen in the south to Kirkenes, or you can begin your cruise in Kirkenes and cruise south to Bergen. Both cruises include port visits to Norway’s major coastal cities and remote villages.

Hurtigruten Norwegian fjord cruise

The 11-day Norwegian Discovery cruise is sort of a combination of the other three. You’ll embark in Bergen, cruise across the Arctic Circle to Kirkenes and when the ship heads south for Bergen, passengers will disembark in the medieval city of Trondheim, founded in 997.

READ NEXT:  Best tips for your first solo cruise

Along the way, on all four itineraries, routes include sailing through Norway’s world-famous fjords with all the spectacular scenery you can imagine. There are complimentary enrichment lectures and onboard activities led by Hurtigruten guides and naturalists.

Hurtigruten Expedition Cruises with no Single Supplement

Hurtigruten has extended their no single supplement offer to 19 amazing itineraries. I think I counted the list of these 19 itineraries three times because it’s not often that cruise lines offer no single supplements on their best itineraries. But it’s true. From 6- to 20-day voyages to Antarctica, exploring Spitsbergen in search of polar bears, discovering the coast of Alaska or even a few Caribbean cruises, there’s really no single supplement.

No Solo supplement is a Limited time offer!

Here’s the deal…there’s a time limit on booking your cruise and not be hit with paying double. Take advantage of not paying extra and reserve your stateroom by February 29, 2020. While most of the cruises available on this promo are for this spring and summer, there are cruises into the fall and even 2021.

Best Norwegian Singles Cruises 2024

There are many reasons for traveling solo, and Norwegian Cruises are a great choice for anyone looking to do so.

Solo travel on a Norwegian cruise can offer a unique and enriching experience in a relaxed “Freestyle Cruising” way.

Allowing for complete freedom and flexibility to plan their own itinerary and explore at their own pace.

Solo cruising can be a great way to meet new people, whether its in the Studio Lounge or taking part with other guests on one of the many activities available.

Single woman on cruise

The Norwegian Cruise line also offers social events and activities for solo travelers to connect with like-minded individuals.

If nothing else, a Norwegian solo cruise can be an opportunity to indulge in much-needed self-care and relaxation away from the stresses and demands of everyday life.

Which Norwegian Cruise Ships Have Single Cabins?

Approximately half the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet offers studio cabins, with 8 in total, which will increase to 9 when the new ship Norwegian Viva is launched in 2023.

In the table below, you can see the number of studio cabins on each Norwegian ship that offers them.

Are Norwegian Cruises Good for Single Travellers?

Norwegian Cruise Line is considered one of the best for solo travelers .   They were one of the first main cruise lines to cater directly to single persons traveling alone by providing their Studio staterooms which can be booked for one person with no single supplement fees.

Best Norwegian Cruise Ships for Singles

The newer ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet are more tailored towards solo cruisers, with new ships since the Norwegian Epic launched in 2010.

While the older smaller ships might be preferred by some travelers, they don’t tend to have single cabins and studio lounge features.

NCL for Singles 20’s to 30s

Most of the ships are packed with a wide range of activities as well as award-winning entertainment, such a Rock of Ages.

The larger ships with more attractions tend to be most popular with this age group. These include fun activities like laser tag courses, go-karting, and virtual reality games.

Other top attractions of interest include:

  • Sports Complex (3 storeys – basketball, mini golf etc)
  • Skyy Vodka Ice Bar
  • Vibe Beach Club

Norwegian cruises is one of our picks for best cruises lines for 20-something singles and also for singles in their 30s .

Singles in the 40s

Norwegian cruises are very popular with singles in their 40’s with a wide range of activities and entertainment and similar age group onboard.

Singles Over 50s

NCL cruises are ideal for those overs 50s solo travelers. There will be plenty of other passengers, including other singles, onboard in this age group.

Single Seniors (60s and over)

While Norwegian Cruise Lines are a good option for singles over 60s this is the age range where guests in this age bracket start to opt for other cruise lines instead which tend to attract this older demographic and a little less lively.

Norwegian Cruise Line Solo Cabins

Norwegian Epic Studio Cabin

Norwegian Cruise Line was one of the first main cruise lines to start catering to the solo traveler by offering purposely built single-person Studio Cabins, which are not subject to a single supplement fee.

The Norwegian Studio cabins are typically 100 square feet and include:

  • Full-size bed (single mattress)
  • Separate sink and standing shower areas
  • Flat-screen TV

The small sink is within the cabin.

Although compact, you can use under-the-bed storage as well as an cabin stall for extra storage options.

Each Studio has a window that lets light in from the hallway or, on newer ships, a video screen showing what’s outside.

Studio Cabins Exclusives

Studio Lounge on Norwegian Bliss cruise ship

The Studio cabins are designated their own exclusive area of the ship for which guests need a key card to gain access.

This gives Studio guests access to an exclusive Studio Lounge area.

This is a great area to meet up with other singles as well as pick up some freebies, including:

  • Free coffee (espresso machine)
  • Free  water
  • Free food (varying options throughout the day, breakfast, and snacks)

For additional fees, there’s also a bar (tended at specific times)  and a self-serving wine machine.

There’s also a whiteboard on the wall where events and meet-ups can be arranged and messages exchanged.

Solo Events

Every evening events are arranged specifically for the solo cruises.

Norwegian Solo Cruiser Experience

The video below highlights the experience of a solo cruiser (La Lido Loca) in a Norwegian studio cabin.

One of the things he highlighted was how the padded rooms and quietness helped him get a really good night’s sleep.  Although he did miss waking up to see the sea from his cabin.

How To Avoid The Norwegian Single Supplement Fee?

The most obvious way to avoid the single supplement fee on a Norwegian cruise is to book one its single-occupancy Studio cabins,

These cabins are purposely designed for single travelers.  They are quite small and compact but they work out much cheaper than booking a double-occupancy stateroom and paying almost double the price.

If you book do book a double-occupancy room, you will have to pay double the fare, but you’ll only pay for one person’s port fees, taxes, and gratuities.

Chartered Singles Cruises on Norwegian Ships

If you are specifically looking to cruise with other singles, a good option is to book a charted singles cruise.

This means you’ll be traveling onboard a Norwegian cruise ship as part of a group of singles who all follow or at have the option to participate in the group’s own planned events and activities.

This is a great way to meet other singles.

As Norwegian cruise ships can carry thousands of passengers, you’ll also be onboard with regular cruises.  However, even if they are single, they won’t be able to participate in specifically arranged events for your singles group.

One well know option for a singles cruise is singlescruise.com

Currently scheduled, they had these cruises available on Norwegian ships:

  • June 25, 2023, from Rome, Italy, aboard the Norwegian Breakaway
  • December  23, 2023, from Miami, FL, aboard the Norwegian Joy
  • December 31, 2023, from Miami, FL, aboard the Norwegian Encore
  • February 11, 2024, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, aboard the Norwegian Viva
  • May 13, 2024, from London (Southampton), England, aboard the Norwegian Getaway

You can find details of the latest options here .

Meeting Other Solo Travellers

On most regular Norwegian sailings, there will be singles meet-ups organized so solo travelers can get socialize and get to know each other.

On occasions, the crew organizes crawls around the cars of the ship.

Another option are the Friends of Dorthy happy hours, which is on each evening on ships that hold it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you go on a norwegian cruise alone.

Yes, you can go on a Norwegian cruise alone, and many people do.   The NCL cruise line is popular with solo travelers from their 20s to 50s.

Many Norwegian cruise ships offer single-cabin “Studios,” which, although quite small, do not incur a single-supplement fee.

Norwegian Cruise Line is easily one of the best cruise lines for solo travelers.  The combination of solo cabins and flexible and informal onboard experience make them an enjoyable and relaxing experience for many.

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

norway cruise no single supplement

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

norway cruise no single supplement

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

norway cruise no single supplement

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

norway cruise no single supplement

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

norway cruise no single supplement

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Holland America Line

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line

Single Supplement

Cool Cruiser

We are booked on the Jade in January and it looks like this particular sailing has a lot of cabins left. Someone wants to go with us and since there are no solo cabins they have opted to just get an inside or balcony near us. Does Norwegian ever waive the single supplement and if yes how close to sailing? This person is willing to wait until a month beforehand and do it last minute but if they don't ever waive it they would like to just pick a cabin now. Thanks.

Rarely, sometimes they do have a lower supplement rate but they are only on some cruises. Its a crap shoot, if you want cabins near each other then book now. If it doesn't matter too much wait and see.

Out of NY they often waive it, but, very close to sailing. The furthest out I saw was about 8-9 days. Usually it's more like 3 days, and just yesterday, it was 1 day.

I've never seen it lowered or waived a month out.

Thank you both for the information!

You can search for which cruises have the solo discount for the jade cruises now and that could give you an idea of when they might start showing up. Though how busy the season is will have a lot to do with it.

As someone who cruises solo on a regular basis. They do waive to solo supplement all the time and on January cruises it may start going down but not totally waived around Thanksgiving after final payment. But it will be TBA so they would not be able to choose a cabin location. But if they can wait they will likely find a deal

Good idea! Thanks.

I did a mock booking on NCL site for a cruise in November for my sister who is sailing solo. The total price was $560 more than the senior travel agency I booked through plus the TA offered an additional $200 OBC in addition to the $100 offered by NCL promo.

And actually I just noticed that the $100 promo is multiplied by 2. (2 x Free $100 On-Board Credit Certificate Non-Refundable).

Hi! Solo NCL cruiser here- let me make this much more simple for you. Follow these steps:

find a vacation (expand the advanced search button)

left side- if you have a specific ship or port you want to depart from, click those.

right side- pick your date range.

change number of passengers to 1.

click "view results" (yellow at the bottom)

that search will show the cruises departing out of the port you choose on the dates you choose and the price for one person to travel. I check it on a daily basis with my coffee when I am looking for something specific. When the price reaches what she wants to pay, book it. Most often it will be a "X" room or guaranty. This means whatever class she wants to travel in, she agrees tp let the cruise line choose her room in exchange for a cheap price. Often this does not have freebies with it, but as a solo, it can be lesse xpensive to buy your own drinks anyway.

Hope this helps

CruiseGal999

No, they do not waive the solo supplement. I booked my 2017 cruise in about the 60 days to the sail date. I had to pay the solo supplement. On NCL is typically the full 200% cruise fare.

Some MSC sailings do not charge the full 200% cruise fare for solo cruisers.

Also, the solo cruiser only pays 1 gratuity and 1 tax/port fees/charges. Just fyi.

We are booked on the Jade in January and it looks like this particular sailing has a lot of cabins left.

That's 190 days from today. Almost 6 months out.

Anything is possible but a decently priced mid January Caribbean cruise sailing from PortMiami at the height of the Florida winter tourist season is unlikely to have a "distress sale" waived solo supplement show up anytime soon.

January is a softer season, and supplement drops are possible. BUT "last minute is NOT more than a week prior usually. And certainly not 30 days prior.

"Live from...."

Huntingdon1701

That's wrong. It is waived, but not for every cruise. On some cruises, it appears as a discount well in advance, and others appears at the last minute or not at all. To be honest, if you're American it's best to just book a cruise you like and see if you can rebook if a better deal comes along (different t&C for UK).

I montior it the same way. I would just note with the X room or guaranty rooms they often don't include the perks, so depending on what level you were choosing sometimes it makes more sense to just pick a cabin.

yeah, my mom wanted her adult niece to come along AND be close to her cabin.

so paid $2k for inside cabin for her.

i looked up that ship and cruises 1 week out on same interinery have 0% supplement.

$675 for solo in Inside GTY.

but they're not going to take it because they wanted to be close to each other.

sigh......... paying $1325 extra instead 5-10 min walk between cabins.

I sail often with family members in different cabins and just ask the t/a to make sure reservations are "linked", and every time the cabins are next to each other or in same hallway and just stick my head outside cabin to see the others. Remember the cruise line doesn't want you to come back on this board complaining about something as simple as that, easily within their purview to make good.(hope i'm not jinxing myself.)

yes, thats that my mom and niece did. cabins close to one another.

but with no solo supplement GTY rooms, it's random where your room will be assigned.

I was not travelling solo but was doing GTY room each time, no problems.
