The art of branding
Traditional art draws tourists and boosts ties, at this edinburgh gallery, visitors can curate an interactive art exhibition.
A screenshot from Badan Warisan Malaysia's '360° Virtual Tour of Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman'.
Amid the high-rise buildings of Kuala Lumpur (1km walk from Bukit Bintang MRT station) is Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, one of the oldest surviving traditional Malay houses built in stages between 1910 and the early 1930s.
Guided tours in person (around an hour in duration, RM10 donation) are still going on, but now there is also a virtual tour available.
The 360° Virtual Tour of Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman has two language options (English and Bahasa Malaysia) for the tour narration. Click on the white arrow to navigate around the house and move your cursor around to explore the 360° views.
For more information on selected display items, look for the "i" icon in red.
Presented by Badan Warisan Malaysia with funding from Yayasan Sime Darby, the virtual tour project began in early June this year and was completed early this month.
“We aim to engage with our potential future visitors - both local and international - by bringing part of the traditional Malay house’s vernacular architectural and cultural experience into the comfort of their home, digitally. The virtual tour will allow visitors to experience a self-guided tour of our Rumah Penghulu and access information on selected display items.
"With the official launch of this virtual tour, we hope to educate on items of architectural and cultural significance, the importance of a traditional Malay house as well as increase awareness and appreciation for Malaysian heritage,” Badan Warisan Malaysia says in a statement.
Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman was owned by the local headman of Mukim Bagan Samak in Bandar Baharu, Kedah. Originally located in Kampung Sungai Kechil, it was relocated and restored (1996-1997) by Badan Warisan Malaysia.
Today, the 100-year-old Rumah Penghulu is surrounded by a traditional herb and heritage garden which has over 50 species of trees and plants of environmental, cultural and historic interest.

It’s filled with hundreds of shopfronts piled with fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat, and there’s also a dry market where you’ll find clothes and crafts. Our Local Specialists will show you how the locals haggle for their fresh produce.
Visit the Kampung Cantik village
Join a local family for lunch in the village of Kampung Cantik, and take a walk around the village to see the Malacca kampong stilt houses. You’ll discover the friendly culture of the village as you participate in some of their favorite games including silat, an indigenous form of martial arts.
Climb up the rainbow staircase to Batu Caves
The Batu Caves is a popular Tamil shrine and one of Malaysia’s most spectacular sights. You’ll admire a towering golden statue, before ascending 272 rainbow steps up the limestone hill to find a complex of cave temples. We’ll go exploring through the caves, including Temple Cave, where you’ll discover a number of Hindu shrines.
Drive through the Cameron Highlands
We’ll take you on a journey through the magical green valleys and tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands. You’ll see the painted murals and gold Buddha statue of Perak Cave Temple, see the colonial-style town of Ipoh, and enjoy an afternoon tea of scones and local strawberry jam at Tanah Rata.

Nasi Goreng
Found all over the country, Nasi Goreng is Malaysia’s answer to fried rice. This traditional rice dish is cooked with onions, shallots, chilli, soy sauce, tamarind, nuts and spices and served with your choice of egg, pork, prawns or crispy fried chicken.

What to pack for Malaysia
Adaptor plug
In Malaysia the standard voltage is 240 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type G. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Comfortable shoes
From climbing Malacca Hill and hiking through forested mountains, to walking the cobbled streets of George Town, you’ll need a reliable pair of walking shoes.
Light modest clothing
Malaysia is hot and humid for most of the year and you’ll need light and loose clothing. It’s also a highly religious country and it’s best to dress modestly with shoulders and thighs covered.
Sunscreen and repellent
Protect yourself from the natural elements of Malaysia with at least SPF 30 sunscreen and a strong DEET insect repellent.
A small travel umbrella will come in handy in Malaysia, from shielding you from the monsoon rains to blocking out the blazing sunshine.

Malaysia Highlights
Wan was a very good guide for his first trip as a tour guide. However, I wish he had asked for everyone's input consistently and ensured he received it on several things like if we should skip lunch, travel changes, etc. I also hope in the future he tries better to inform everyone of any changes in plans. I appreciated him taking good care of me when I fell ill, his friendly nature, and effort to make certain that I was satisfied with the trip. He also did a fantastic job at ensuring that the elderly gentleman that was on our trip was taken care of after learning that he needed some extra attention. My favorite thing about Wan as a tour guide was his consistency in teaching us about the culture and exposing us to native foods. Some of the people on the tour rushed me at certain stops and I hope that Wan in the future will make certain to make it clear that the tour should be respectful of everyone's personal desires to enjoy the trip. Travel Time + Itinerary: The two days where we had very long travel days, to Taman Negara and to Penang, I think could have been broken up some. During the bus ride to Taman Negara, I think a stay in the park for a few hours and having lunch would be better so that folks don't get hungry and have a proper meal. Also, the ride along the way was beautiful and it would be interesting to learn about that region. Also, it breaks up the ride which was very long! Additionally, the ride to Penang was very long and while we did stop for lunch, which was delicious, it would have been nice to stop in the national park and see some of the limestone rocks which were gorgeous. Kota Bharu: While an interesting city, the lunch we had here was the worst on the trip. I would recommend finding a better place to eat. I also felt this city was not a good place to spend the night and I recommend looking at a different place to stay, perhaps closer to Penang. Homestay - This was by far my favorite place on the trip! The host family is by far so hospitable and lovely! The food was amazing and I just loved the bike ride, learning how to grate coconut, watching the sunset, and the having meals with them. Accommodation: The hotel in the jungle should do a better job of managing breakfast to ensure ants do not crawl all over it (I saw this two mornings in a row) and this is where I got food poisoning from the sausage/hot dogs. I hope they do a better job of preparing/inspecting the food in the future.

Incredible Borneo, Malaysia (5 & 4 Star Hotels)
Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula
The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.
Borneo Wildlife Discoverer
Borneo was a fabulous trip. Our guide, Nostalia, was knowledgeable, organized, funny, intuitive about our (wonderful) group and made every day and every excursion interesting and fun. I was very pleased by all the flora and fauna we saw, the hikes we took and the lodges we stayed in. Thank you!!!
What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Malaysia
If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.

Thank you, GM Travel House and the lady, behind it, Ms. Gulnora Khamidova. Thank you so very much.

I would highly recommend this tour company to everyone. If you want to go to places which are exclusive and not sold by many companies, you need to contact GM Travel House. They will arrange for you somethings exiting. I particularly enjoyed the gastronomic adventure! Thank you!
Didi Gill, Malaysia
Just back from trip organized by GM Travel House. It was a very special one. Loved the guides who did an excellent job. Would highly recommend GM Travel House! The trip to Georgia and trip to Armenia was an opening of the horizons for me. The history of each place was fascinating and the stories behind their ancient monasteries and churches were an eye opener. The architecture of the several UNESCO heritage sites was mind blowing: to think that they could build all those amazing buildings without tools and machines we have today!!!
Tan Cheng Imm Lily, Malaysia
Special thanks to Ms Gulnora for organizing this epic travel to Georgia and gastro-tour to Armenia. Love the tour guides and drivers, especially in Armenia. Good food and friendly people. it’s an eye opener for us all, and a fascinating perspective on these less travelled countries. High recommendations to go to Caucasus with GM Travel House! This company is very professional and dedicated to its job.
