Quintessential Rocky & Creed Tour of Philadelphia

City attractions and locations seen in the rocky and creed films....

Copied to Clipboard

In 1976, Philadelphia was forever immortalized on celluloid with the tale of an aspiring boxer with the Academy Award-winning film Rocky .

Since Rocky Balboa’s first famous run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art , the original franchise has spawned five sequels.

It’s also led to a super-successful spinoff franchise with 2015’s Creed and 2018’s Creed II,  which follow Rocky Balboa’s training of Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s former rival and friend Apollo Creed.

Get into fighting shape and explore city locations frequented by the beloved fictional Philadelphians.

The Rocky Steps

72 steps to the top....

Women posing on the Rocky Steps

Seventy-two treads lead art aficionados, exercise enthusiasts and millions of film buffs up to the East Entrance of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway ’s esteemed Philadelphia Museum of Art . On any given day, Balboa wannabes jog to the top, raise their fists in the air and, on occasion, belt out Gonna Fly Now . Fun fact: This dolomite staircase  has been featured in every Rocky and Creed film except Rocky IV .

Where: Rocky Steps, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway

The Rocky Statue

A real-life monument to a celluloid hero....

tour rocky philadelphia

Originally commissioned for Rocky III , sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg’s larger-than-life interpretation of the triumphant boxer stands on a stretch of grass just north of the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Previously located at the Spectrum Arena (now the Wells Fargo Center), the statue was installed at the museum in 2006. Sylvester Stallone himself presided over the rededication ceremony. The statue makes a cameo in Creed and Creed II , and visitors still line up for photographs alongside their hero.

9th Street Italian Market

A south philadelphia mainstay since the 19th century....

Italian Market

During the famous training scenes in Rocky and Rocky II , Balboa jubilantly jogs past vendors in Philadelphia’s iconic 9th Street Italian Market . In Creed , Adonis also runs through the Italian Market during a monumental scene. Today, butcher shops, produce stands, cheese purveyors — and, in recent decades, taquerias and bistros — comprise the nation’s oldest and largest working outdoor market. Plus, the stretch looks almost exactly the same as it did in 1976.

Where: 9th Street Italian Market, S. 9th Street & Washington Avenue

Esposito’s Meats

Italian market butcher shop serving philadelphia for more than a century....

For more than a century, Esposito’s has been the go-to butcher shop in the Italian Market. While it’s doubtful visitors will be able to practice boxing on a side of beef, they can purchase the high-quality meats and sausages that have made Esposito’s one of Philadelphia’s favorite butcher shops.

Where: Esposito's Meats, 1001 S. 9th Street

Pat’s King of Steaks

The original and still among the best....

Exterior of Pat's King of Steaks in Philadelphia

Rocky couldn’t resist a trip to Pat’s King of Steaks for an authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak during his training. The famous shop where the cheesesteak was invented more than 80 years ago makes a brief cameo in the original film. The appearance made a huge impact — the spot where Rocky stood is now dedicated with a special plaque.

Where: Pat's King of Steaks, 1237 E. Passyunk Avenue

Victor Cafe

Italian with a side of opera....

Victor Cafe

This circa-1933 South Philly spot stood in as Adrian’s, the restaurant owned and operated by Rocky in Rocky Balboa,  Creed and Creed II . In reality, the Victor is known for fine Italian cuisine and a waitstaff who performs operatic arias during every dinner service.

Where: Victor Cafe, 1303 Dickinson Street

Green Eggs Cafe

Locally sourced ingredients make for a crowd-pleasing menu....

The Passyunk-area outpost of this Philly brunch spot serves up whopping portions of breakfast and lunch favorites to a full house every day of the week. Locals and newcomers love its eco-friendly sensibilities, locally grown produce and menu for staunch meat-eaters and vegans alike. The restaurant makes an appearance in Creed .

Where: Green Eggs Cafe, 1306 Dickinson Street

Independence Hall

Birthplace of both the declaration of independence and the constitution....

Independence Hall

One of Philadelphia’s most popular destinations, Independence Hall is notable for birthing our nation and featuring a now-famous park bench hurdled by Rocky during a training scene in Rocky II .

Where: Independence Hall, 520 Chestnut Street

Penn’s Landing

A hub of activity throughout the year....

Penn's Landing

Diehard Philadelphians noticed decades ago that the iconic training runs in the first two Rocky films didn’t exactly follow a logical path. Instead, the routes took him from waterfront to waterfront, spanning Center City, the Italian Market and Penn’s Landing . Today, Penn’s Landing, no longer an industrial tract, is home to pop-up beer gardens, outdoor concerts, new parks and plenty of exercise enthusiasts.

Where: Penn's Landing, 101 S. Christopher Columbus Boulevard

Johnny Brenda's

Delicious food + great beer + live music = a fishtown landmark....

Bianca (Tessa Thompson), the love interest of Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), performs at this popular 250-person bar, restaurant and performance space in the city’s Fishtown section in Creed . Downstairs, patrons enjoy seasonal American plates, local craft brews and pool. Upstairs, it’s all about the live music.

Head beneath the tracks for cheap beer and live music...

In the first film, Rocky lived right down the street from the El – or the elevated rail line – in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. Philadelphia’s elevated rail line is SEPTA’ s Market-Frankford El, which transverses the city from the Northeast through Center City to West Philadelphia. At The El Bar – situated, naturally, right underneath the El  – guests can get a little bit of the vibe from Rocky’s neighborhood in the original film. The quasi-dive bar attracts a loyal following, thanks to inexpensive beer and snacks, a pool table, live music and an enormous outdoor patio.

Where: The El Bar, 1356 N. Front Street

Max's Steaks

Delicious cheesesteaks off-the-tourist-beaten path....

Men eating cheesesteaks in front of Max's Steaks

Located in North Philadelphia, this cheesesteak shop — rated best in the city by Playboy magazine — had a star turn in Creed , serving as the go-to spot for Philly’s famous sandwich. In the film, Adonis, who is new to Philly, comes here to get his steak on during his first date with Bianca. He also learns about the word “jawn” — Philly slang for a multi-purpose fill-in-the-blank word — while at the cheesesteak spot. In  Creed II , Max’s is where Adonis first hears of boxer Viktor Drago’s challenge for a fight.

Where: Max's Steaks, 3653 Germantown Avenue

Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries

Who’s who of deceased philadelphia in a magnificent setting....

Laurel Hill Cemetery

East Falls’ historic cemetery is a National Historic Landmark — and the site of three of the series’ most touching moments, when Rocky visits Adrian’s grave in  Rocky Balboa , Creed and Creed II . The headstone used in the film was just a prop, but throughout the massive still-active venue, elaborate mausoleums serve as the final resting place for a number of Philadelphia’s wealthiest citizens and celebrities. Self-guided tours are available every day, and special events run year-round.

Where: Various locations including Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Avenue

The Philadelphia Zoo

Animals and plants thrive at america’s first zoo....

Philadelphia Zoo

America’s first zoo is the scene of Rocky and Adrian’s engagement in Rocky II . Rocky memorably proposed in the snow-blanketed zoo in front of the tiger exhibit. Today, tigers and other animals roam freely through Big Cat Crossing, an overhead mesh pathway that’s part of Zoo360, a first-in-the-world system of trails that encourages the animals to explore and travel throughout the zoo.

Boathouse Row

Boathouse Row

Note:  As of March 20, 2023, Boathouse Row’s iconic lights are undergoing maintenance, and will remain dark through the end of 2023. Read more  here .

As spotted in Rocky Balboa , the scenic Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River attracts runners, walkers, bikers and rollerbladers from around the region. Local boating clubs take great pride in their 19th-century boat houses, which line the Schuylkill River just west of the Philadelphia Museum of Art . At night, lights outline one of the city’s loveliest views.

JG Domestic

Garces goes homegrown....

Serving farm-to-table American cuisine, Jose Garces’ JG Domestic offers delicious lunch and dinner options for travelers passing through 30th Street Station. Bonus: It’s located on the ground floor of the Cira Centre, which was featured in Rocky Balboa .

Where: JG Domestic, 2929 Arch Street

Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk

The view of the Schuylkill River and the Philadelphia skyline from the South Street Bridge

The Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk is a breathtaking, 2,000-foot-long pathway that extends the Schuylkill River Trail from Locust Street to South Street. The scenic path allows pedestrians, runners and bicyclists to literally walk over the river — and catch some of the best skyline views around. It’s no wonder Adonis trains on the boardwalk during Creed .

Where: Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk, 129 S. 30th Street

Rittenhouse Square

Philadelphia’s most popular town square....

Rittenhouse Square

Rocky and Adrian contemplated their pending parenthood while walking through Rittenhouse Square in Rocky II . Today, city residents and families continue to gather in the picturesque outdoor space.

Where: Rittenhouse Square, Walnut & South 18th streets

Lively bar in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood...

A popular spot to grab a pint, Irish Pub provides a classic pub experience in Center City . The casual menu and convivial atmosphere put guests in a very social mood — just like it did for Rocky’s son when he was hanging out with his buddies in Rocky Balboa .

Where: Irish Pub, 2007 Walnut Street

See the city at Rocky's clip...

In his celebrated run, Rocky Balboa conquered a 30-mile venture across the city — nearly the equivalent of a 50K! Runners looking to impersonate Rocky who would prefer a less daunting course can try a 5K variation of the route.

Start at 9th Street and Washington Avenue, the heart of the 9th Street Italian Market . This is where Rocky ran to the sounds of cheering fans and scenes of bustling market buyers and sellers. Take Ninth Street north to Spruce Street and then make a left, running along its beautiful, wide sidewalks to 16th Street. Go right on 16th Street and follow it all the way to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway . Continue along the parkway toward the Philadelphia Museum of Art to finish like Rocky did, sprinting up the 72 “ Rocky Steps ” that lead to the entrance of the museum. Bonus: Run back down the steps to give Rocky Balboa a high five. (Find his statue to the right of the base of the steps).

Where: Washington Avenue and South 9th Street (suggested starting point)

ADDRRIIANNN! A Guide to Rocky's Philadelphia

tour rocky philadelphia

I'll be honest. I haven't seen all the Rocky movies. But I have run up the Rocky steps so I think that counts.

Rocky Balboa is a character in a film, but with seven movies spanning his fictional live from the mid 1970s to 2006, he seems real. He even has his own Wikipedia page. And Rocky was an everyman from Philadelphia. The city has embraced this representative of their working class.

In 1980, for Rocky III, a larger than life 10 foot tall bronze statue of the man himself was created and later donated to the city by Sylvester Stallone (aka Rocky). It's at the base of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art . First, take a picture with him, before you're sweaty, then...

RUN UP THE ROCKY STEPS

It's only 72 steps, it's definitely doable and you'll seem many tourists, young and old, jogging up the stairs and pumping their first in the air in a triumphant celebration as they reach the top. In the movie, Rocky climbs the steps to the theme song, Gonna Fly Now. You probably don't recognise the name, but you'll recognise the song. Though, you'll often hear people singing, or now a days pulling up on YouTube, Eye of the Tiger as they run up the stairs.

ROCKY'S APARTMENT

It still looks like it did in the 1970s, a tucked away little brick apartment on E Tusculum Street by Ruth Street. But keep in mind, this is someone's home so we aren't posting the actual address. If you're a true Rocky fan, you'll recognise it!

PAT'S KING OF STEAKS

We all know about the cheesesteak, and this Philly staple seen in the movie is still going strong. There is even a plaque which reads “On this spot stood Sylvester Stallone filming the great motion picture Rocky. Nov. 21, 1975″.

Pat’s have put together a step by step guide on ‘how to order a steak’ situated above the ordering counter. Take a minute to read it before placing an order as there is system.

Parking spots will be few and far between.

Pat’s King of Steaks 1237 E. Passyunk Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19147-5060

MIGHTY MICK'S GYM

The facade will look the same, but Mighty Mick’s never actually was a gym of any kind – the gym scenes were shot in LA. I think it's a Dollar store now!

How to Get There (courtesy of totalrocky.com) “Start by going down near Penns Landing at the waterfront (The Delaware River). Take North Delaware Ave. until you see Frankford Ave. Take Frankford Ave. straight past E. Girard Ave., keep going 20-30 blocks until you see East Norris St. Take a left or go to the next street that allows you to turn left, then go straight a couple of blocks to North Front St. Then take a right about two blocks and on the right is 2147 N. Front St., Mickey’s Gym.”

ADRIAN'S RESTAURANT

“Adrian’s” is a real cafe named Victor Cafe. It opened in 1930s and dedicated the Italian restaurant to opera, Located near the intersection of Dickinson and 13th Streets, this intimate Italian restaurant opened in the 1930′s and quickly became South Philly’s shrine to opera. In January, 2006, Victor’s was outfitted as both the facade and interior of Rocky Balboa’s Italian restaurant titled “Adrian’s”.

The "Rocky" statue is one of the sights you'll see along the Yo, Philly! Rocky Film Tour.

Philadelphia's Rocky statue undergoing restoration for several days

"Rocky is out here in every element. He's a survivor and this is what he needs in order to look his best."

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Many people come from all over to see the famous Rocky statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

However, some of those tourists encountered barriers as the statue underwent routine conservation maintenance on Tuesday.

"Rocky is out here in every element. He's a survivor and this is what he needs in order to look his best," said Marco Federico, with Heritage Conservation Collective.

Temporary barriers and signage were posted Tuesday morning to let visitors know of the ongoing conservation work. The work will be done from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Professional public art conservators hired from Heritage Conservation Collective to clean and wax the statue of the iconic champion.

"We'll heat the sculpture up with a torch and apply a microcrystal and torch, and that will really slow down the process of corrosion and protect it," Federico explained.

For those who have the statue on their Philadelphia bucket list, you'll still have your chance to see it! Officials say the barriers will be removed each day after the work is complete, ensuring that it remains fully accessible for visitors.

"I couldn't pass up seeing the statue and getting a picture of it," said Cheryl Baker, who is visiting from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"It really has become one of the icons of the city for people who visit," said Noni Clemens, with the Office of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.

The bronze statue has been standing tall at the Art Museum for 18 years.

The Rocky statue was created by artist A. Thomas Schomberg in 1980 and was gifted to the city by Sylvester Stallone . It is part of Philadelphia's permanent collection of over 1,000 public artworks.

"The Rocky statue is beloved by residents and visitors of Philadelphia alike," said Marguerite Anglin, Public Art Director of the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. "Regular cleaning and waxing protects Rocky from weather-related damage and deterioration and helps preserve it for generations to come."

The Rocky Statue is set for maintenance between rounds of sparring with Philly’s elements

Read the news of the day in less than 10 minutes — not that we’re counting.

Rocky Balboa’s fighting days are long behind him, but he still occasionally needs a tune up.

The battles against time and the elements are starting to show and, if left unpolished, the champ might not make it to the next bell.

Obviously, as a movie icon, Rocky the character will never die. The Rocky Statue outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art needs some occasional TLC to keep it fighting fit though.

The bronze likeness of Sylvester Stallone as the “Italian Stallion” will undergo routine conservation maintenance on May 7 and 8. Public art conservators from Heritage Conservation Collective will do the work.

“Regular cleaning and waxing protects Rocky from weather-related damage and deterioration and helps preserve it for generations to come,” said Marguerite Anglin, Public Art Director of the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

The statue was last cleaned in 2023, Anglin said. Bronze statues like it typically receive maintenance treatments every three-five years.

tour rocky philadelphia

Marco Federico, principle conservator for Heritage Conservation Collective, wrote in an email that the process first involves a light surface cleaning to remove excess grime and sticker residue. This prepares the surface for any areas that need spot panination, the evening out of the color to match the rest of the statue. Finally, a protective wax coating is applied.

During the conservation days, temporary barriers will block access to the statue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will still be able to see the statue while the work is in progress, but they can’t get close to it. Federico said that the statue still gets onlookers and photo-takers while the conservators are working. While no tourist has ever asked to help, yet, they still have queries.

“We are prepared to answer questions, but we treat it like we treat any other sculptural bronze, with care and caution,” he wrote. “We are using an open flame to apply the wax, so we hope people can hold their questions to the end.”

In 1980, Stallone commissioned Thomas Schomberg to create the statue for a scene in 1982’s “Rocky III” (featuring  Mr. T’s Clubber Lang, if that’s how you keep track of them). After the film, Stallone gifted the artwork to the city.

Since it’s various placements around the museum for the scene, the statue was moved to the Spectrum Sports Complex and then back beside the museum, next to the iconic 72 steps that so many people race up, likely humming along to Bill Conti’s “Gonna Fly Now” while they run.

An estimated 4 million people visit the Rocky Statue every year , which is more than twice the amount that check out the Liberty Bell.

Stallone last revisited his younger likeness on Dec. 3 to receive a key to the City and help celebrate the inaugural ‘Rocky Day,’ 47 years after the U.S. premiere of the original “Rocky.”

@whyypublicmedia Stallone got the key to the city, and Dec 3 is officially “Rocky Day” in Philadelphia. We teamed up with @Visit Philly to talk to Sly himself about art and failure, and to tell him about our Rocky podcast. A quintessential stop in Philly to some, an over-glorified movie prop to others, an extensive history of the Rocky Statue and its long, twisty path to becoming one of Philly’s tourism hotspots is available on WHYY’s “The Statue” podcast .

Federico said he understood the divisiveness around the Rocky Statue, adding that “sometimes the artistic value of a piece can be trumped by the cultural value, what a sculpture means to a place, a city, a street corner or public park.”

“We might not all agree on what constitutes as ‘good art,’ and that’s totally fine,” he wrote. “It’s not my job to convince people. It is my job to make sure it’s properly-maintained for future generations to admire or admonish.”

The Episcopalian women ordained as priests in a groundbreaking 1970s movement featured in the documentary “The Philadelphia 11.” Courtesy of Time Travel Productions LLC.

“The Philadelphia 11″ is the story of a group of Episcopalian women who sought to break through their church’s all-male tradition by being ordained as priests in a groundbreaking 1970s movement. Despite its title, a striking number of the subjects of the documentary worked, lived and worshipped in Maine.

Speaking with Maine Episcopal Bishop the Right Rev. Thomas J. Brown – who was instrumental in the Maine church donating $10,000 to filmmakers Margo Guernsey and Nikki Bramley’s crowdfunding campaign – is to understand how this women-led religious movement illustrated how even relatively progressive institutions have to contend with internalized misogyny and how the example of these defiantly faithful women serves as a much-needed guidance today.

“It’s the story of women,” Brown said of the wide-reaching implications of the film, screening May 14 at the Nickelodeon in Portland. “Women are pioneers in any decade and we need to both hear and take as inspiration how each of us – male, female, non-binary, it doesn’t matter – at every stage of history have been changed for the better by the leadership of women.”

THE MAINE CONNECTIONS

For Brown, his daily duties having taken him all over Maine each Sunday, the lasting effect of the film’s events is evident. “In my role as the chief overseer here in Maine, I’m in a different congregation every week, and I see how the Maine congregations cherish their woman priests.”

The Nickelodeon screening will be followed by a panel discussion with several of the surviving Philadelphia 11 and other Maine-based female clergy who followed in their footsteps, including the Rev. Canon Nancy Moore (Norway), the Rev. Dr. Vicki Lovely Smith (Palmyra), the Rev. Portia Royall Hirschman (Scarborough) and, co-subject of “The Philadelphia 11,” the Rev. Merrill Bittner, who served at St. Barnabus Episcopal Church in Rumford until 2006. Advertisement

GOOD, OLD MAINE COMMON SENSE

As Bishop Brown puts it, Maine’s unique character is central to the ongoing and never-more-timely fight for women’s equality. “Today, we wake up to news of Florida’s abortion law, which shows that if there aren’t women leading and speaking about their experience, we run the risk of being a society who is not fulfilling these values of liberty and the right to freedom.” Pointing to his own church’s rocky road to recognizing the equal rights of women, Brown is succinct, noting, “In a word – it’s patriarchy.” He’s also convinced that Maine can be a leader thanks to another core trait: common sense.

“There are ways in which Maine, for all its conservatism, actually has been remarkably progressive,” said Brown, pointing to Maine’s election of powerful women from Margaret Chase Smith to Gov. Janet Mills. “We’re blessed with a great deal of common sense, something that is (seriously) lacking right now. When I look at the women in my life, they tend to almost universally exhibit measures of common sense absent or, at least not abundant, in their male counterparts.”

For Brown, “The Philadelphia 11” epitomizes the necessary leadership women bring to cultural change. “This film points to and leads us toward a greater commitment to the common good, but also to common sense.”

Author’s note: Bishop Brown took it without offense that he was the second choice of interview, after the happily retired Rev. Bittner politely noted that appearing on the film’s panel was enough public speaking for her. Sounds like some of that admirable Maine common sense right there.
