Machine Gun Kelly addressed accusations that he was a “tourist” in the rock genre while picking up the award for Favorite Rock Artist at the 2022 American Music Awards .

“There have been some people in the rock community who called me a tourist, but they’re wrong. I’m a rocket man. We weren’t born on the moon but we looked at it and we were curious and then we went there,” he said while picking up the trophy at Microsoft Theater on Sunday evening (November 20). “These last two rock albums for me were me going to the moon.”

It appears that one of the main people who implied MGK was a sell-out for going rock was Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor . While he didn’t name the Mainstream Sellout hitmaker by name, he addressed people who move between genres in an interview.

“I [hate] the artists who failed in one genre and decided to go rock—and I think he knows who he is,” he said in an interview with Loudwire . “But that’s another story.”

Although he didn’t name any names, MGK later took aim at the band and called them “old, weird dudes with masks.”

This is not the first time MGK has addressed accusations of being a sellout.

“I know it kills certain bands in that community that I got the success that I got,” he told Billboard earlier this year. “But I earned that s-it. Dude, I was f-cking loading up the van with our drums and amps in 2010, driving to Indiana and Chicago, playing Warped Tour . I can tell you the f-cking Wi-Fi codes to venues in Blackfoot, Idaho. Can you say that s-it as a band?”

Machine Gun Kelly Slams 'Rock Community' Critics Who Call Him 'A Tourist'

Machine Gun Kelly had some choice words for haters in the "rock community" when he took home the "Favorite Rock Artist" award at the American Music Awards Sunday night (November 20), beating out heavy hitters like Imagine Dragons , Red Hot Chili Peppers , The Lumineers , and Måneskin . Decked out in a spiked purple suit , the rapper-turned-rocker called out critics as he accepted the award for the second year in a row.

“There have been some people in the rock community who called me a tourist, but they’re wrong – I’m a rocket man,” MGK said during his speech. “We weren’t born on the moon but we looked at it and we were curious and then we went there…supposedly, and these two rock albums were me going to the moon."

“But I’m not done exploring the universe yet," he added, "and I am all genres .”

He shared the same sentiment in an Instagram post celebrating the win. "im not a tourist, im a rocket man…see you on mars motherfxckersss 🚀🥹💜🙏🏻" he wrote alongside a carousel of photos from the night. " @amas  THANK YOU TO MY LOYAL FAMILY WHO VOTED US 'FAVORITE ROCK ARTIST'”

Machine Gun Kelly has a lot to look forward to in the coming year. On Tuesday, the 2023 GRAMMY Awards nominees were announced and MGK scored a nomination for Best Rock Album for Mainstream Sellout .

ET's Kevin Frazier spoke with MGK at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, where he joined Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. to celebrate music's highest honor. 

Explaining how much receiving the nomination means to him, MGK shared, "This is the envelope where they read my name on it. I'm a hoarder, so this is going to stay in my house forever."

This year's GRAMMY nomination comes a year after the "Bloody Valentine" rocker took to Twitter to vent his frustration with the Academy over his 2020 album,  Tickets to My Downfall, being snubbed. 

In November 2021, MGK tweeted, "wtf is wrong with the grammys."

When asked if this year proved to be redemption for him, Machine Gun Kelly said it's "a form of closure. Sticking with a journey and wondering, is there really light at the end of the tunnel?" 

Looking back on his career, MGK noted that he's been waiting for this recognition for 10 years. "That was just last year's tweet," he said. "Those tweets have happened for 10 years, for sure." 

Taking to Instagram after the announcement, MGK shared a carousel of photos and videos from the day -- including the moment he found out about the nomination with his fiancee, Megan Fox . "Call me what you want as long as it starts with 'grammy nominated' 🤘🏼 I LOVE YOU," he captioned the post.  

With the closure that came from the nomination, MGK already has his sights set on another honor -- performing at the esteemed ceremony. "Yes, GRAMMYs. I will be performing at the GRAMMYs," he told ET. 

The  65th Annual GRAMMY Awards  will take place on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT and will broadcast and stream live on CBS and  Paramount+ . The American Music Awards (AMAs) 2023 concluded the musically enchanting night at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. This year, the music industry thrived with the established artists going into new moods and genres and an explosion of newer artists on the scene. For AMAs 2023, Bad Bunny was a lead contender, but Taylor Swift swept most of the awards at the night. For Rock, the year was great. Machine Gun Kelly was awarded as the Favorite Rock Artist.

The band Måneskin bagged the ‘Favorite Rock song’ trophy for ‘Beggin’ . The Ghost won the ‘Favorite Rock Album’ award for ‘Impera’ . But, the star of the night was Machine Gun Kelly, who wore a spiked jumpsuit. However, the highlight of the night was when the artist slammed his critics as they think he is not an alternative rock artist. What did Machine Gun Kelly tell his critics?

Machine Gun Kelly Was Called “A Tourist” In The Rock Community?

The former rapper has come a long way in his musical career. In 15 years, he has switched genres. Earlier, when he was a rising star, the artist was a hip-hop artist. But, after ‘Lace Up’ his debut album, he released four albums. His last hip-hop album was ‘Hotel Diablo’ in 2019 after his infamous feud with Eminem. After 2019, he released his first pop-punk album titled ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ . The album debuted at the No.1 spot on Billboard 200. He sold 126,000 units.

It has been two years since he entered the rock genre. In 2022, he released another alternative rock album titled ‘mainstream sellout’ . But, in two years, the listeners have accepted the artists with open arms, but as per his admission, the Rock community has not. At the AMAs 2022 , the ‘make up sex’ artist won the ‘Favorite Rock Artist’ award. During his acceptance speech, he took a dig at his critics.

He said, “There have been some people in the rock community that have called me a tourist. They’re wrong, I’m a rocket man. We weren’t born on the moon. But we were curious, so we went there. These last two rock albums were me, going to the moon.” The artist added, “I’m not done exploring the universe yet. I am all genres”.

Corey Taylor Cryptically Criticized The Artist For Switching Genres

Since his debut in the genre, the ‘bloody valentine’ artist was not very well welcomed by the community. One of the examples is that of Corey Taylor, a member of the rock band Slipknot. In an interview, Taylor took a dig at Kelly without taking his name. He said, “I [hate] the artists who failed in one genre and decided to go rock—and I think he knows who he is. But that’s another story.”

Machine Gun Kelly also took a jibe at the member and the band while performing at Riot Fest in 2021. The 31-year-old entertainer was performing at the same festival as Slipknot. So, while on the stage, he said, “Turn the lights up. Let me see who chose to be here instead of with all the old, weird dudes with masks” .

Why Is Machine Gun Kelly a Thing?

The rapper-turned-actor-turned-rocker is everywhere lately, popping up in bad movies, on red carpets with Megan Fox, and being booed off the stages of metal fests. But why?

A common refrain among the non-white, non-male among us is the desire for the unwarranted gall of a mediocre white man in any industry, much less the realm of entertainment. For a while, that kind of unrepentant audacity was pretty much the only thing keeping Machine Gun Kelly employed. But now he’s met his match in the form of Slipknot front man Corey Taylor , who shaded the hell out of the 31-year-old on the Cutter’s Rockcast podcast in February. While turning up his nose at the state of rock music in 2021, Taylor quipped, “I hate all new rock for the most part. Well, the ‘artists’ who failed in one genre and decided to go rock—I think he knows who he is. But that’s another story.”

Apparently, MGK tapped the rock icon to appear on a track for his popcorn-rock album Tickets to My Downfall but it, for whatever reason, didn’t end up happening. On Sept. 19, during a set at Riot Fest in Chicago, a video appeared online of MGK saying, between records, “Hey, you wanna know what I’m really happy that I’m not doing? Being 50 years old wearing a fucking weird mask on a fucking stage, talking shit.” The Chicago Sun-Times also reported that the black-tongued pop punk threw another jab at Slipknot (who was performing on another stage at the same festival) later in the set, demanding the production crew “turn the lights up… let me see who chose to be here instead of with all the old weird dudes with masks.” Now mind you, these are all pretty weak attacks. Kinda hard not being old and also pretty OK to be wearing masks during a global pandemic but, ya know, whatever. The meatless insults are a reminder of why the good ol’ boy couldn’t crack it in rap circles.

The very next day, MGK explained, via Twitter , that the verse Corey did for the album “was fucking terrible” which was why it didn’t make the cut. “He got mad about it, and talked shit to a magazine about the album he was almost on.” Despite their age difference, it seems as if MGK may have forgotten a modern invention called “receipts,” of which Taylor had plenty. An hour after the tweet, Taylor posted text messages from Travis Barker—the superstar drummer who co-produced MGK’s album—with notes from Kelly himself saying that he was “stoked and HONORED” Taylor was on it at all. Taylor, in his reply, said of the song: “I listened to the ideas, and to be honest, I don’t think I’m the right guy for the track. Nothing personal, I just think if this is what MGK is looking for, someone else is the guy to do it. It’s ALL good, and I’m stoked for him.”

For what it’s worth, Taylor didn’t necessarily have to shit talk about MGK on the Rockcast, but hey, the white male id knows no bounds, right? Well, the war of words has now bled into reality and from what we know about metalheads, you kinda don’t wanna mess with their icons.

During his performance at the Louder Than Life festival last weekend in Louisville, Kentucky, fans mercilessly booed and flipped the bird at Megan Fox’s beau while, on Twitter, Trivium front man Matt Heafy “formally diss[ed] Machine Gun Kelly for ‘being 31 years old wearing a fucking 16 year old pop punk cosplay identity on a fucking stage.’” Yet another sad-ass attempt at a gotcha .

MGK’s trail of headline-seeking stunts is quite long. This latest beef comes just a few weeks after he and Conor McGregor did the whitest rendition of “hold me back”-shoving at the VMAs for reasons unknown. Before that, in 2018, he and West Coast rapper G-Eazy traded barbs over the romantic interests of Halsey—another famous woman MGK latched onto for love and relevance—with MGK freestyling over Drake’s “Nonstop” on Hot 97, rapping, “Only Eazy I fuck with is E / I seen he dyed his hair and got a hanging earring / I fucked his girl now he look like this shit is overbearing / How dare him / I dare him / Don’t think about comparing / Now turn that frat rap off, I get sick of hearing.”

The public spats resembling the Spider-Man-to-Spider-Man meme are a pattern that stretch back to his first moments in the rap scene. In 2012, MGK tweeted that Eminem’s daughter, Hailie, was “hot as f**k.” At the time, Hailie was only 16 years old, though MGK thought it’d be fine because he said it “in the most respectful way.” Em responded, subtly, by banning MGK from appearing on his Shade 45 satellite radio station and overtly by rapping on the 2015 diss record, “Not Alike”: “I’m talkin’ to you, but you already know who the f**k you are, Kelly / I don’t use sublims and sure as f**k don’t sneak-diss / But keep commenting on my daughter Hailie.” MGK’s response, “RAP DEVIL,” remains his most popular song.

MGK’s celebrity is steeped in subpar music and creepy behavior. During a 2012 show in Fort Lauderdale, the artist sat half-naked on stage and refused to play another record until a girl who really loves him stripped on stage. That same Florida weekend, the artist spat vodka in a fan’s mouth, tossed a little person during a show, and members of his posse broke a bottle over a man’s head. Later, he was arrested and released on bail for disorderly conduct in St. Petersburg. His unearned stardom is an unsavory marriage of shock-and-awe foolishness, mediocre artmaking, and prominent friendships with the likes of Pete Davidson while posing at events with Halsey and, now, Megan Fox. There are fewer more embarrassing examples of the dreadful state of the influencer economy than the fact that MGK has risen to stardom. He offers precious little in the way of actual art and so much more in nauseating histrionics.

Obviously, the gatekeepers of rock are none too pleased that this manchild is stepping into the game and immediately pissing off the genre’s icons, but lame provocation is par for the course when it comes to MGK. He’s always been an antic artist, but these days, with Fox and friends—including Barker and his superstar girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian completing their powder-pegged quadrant—it seems that Kelly has finally landed on the A-list. Even if it’s wholly based on aesthetics.

In an interview with Apple Music about his 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, Machine Gun Kelly described the night he hit bottom. He was in the kitchen, his daughter asleep in the next room. “I just had no serotonin in my body left to give me any type of motivation or happiness,” he said. “I realize that I wanted all this”—his circumstance, his art, his life—“to go away.” He didn’t die that night. But he did write a song about trying to (“Glass House”). It’s not an easy listen—at one point, he passes out with blood dripping on the floor. But the same extremes that can make Kelly’s music unsettling have also made him a beacon for his fans, the kind of artist who shines light in the darkest corners of his mind. Born Richard Colson Baker in 1990, to missionary parents in Houston, Kelly was raised primarily in Cleveland, a city whose atmosphere of crime and post-industrial decay formed a backdrop for his tracks. Drugs, childhood trauma, self-negation: Kelly’s music never offers an easy way out. But as bleak as it can be, there’s a sense of catharsis to it, too, bridging the grit of hip-hop with the melodic quality of pop-punk and nu-metal—the spoonful of sugar that makes Kelly’s bitter pill go down. Is it rap? Is it rock? Nirvana, LINKIN PARK, or Eminem? To Kelly’s generation—including peers like Trippie Redd and the late Juice WRLD—the distinction is antiquated. They’re here for the feeling. Or at least the promise of letting the feeling out.

Machine Gun Kelly ‘s Mainstream Sellout Schecter signature guitar, his second signature with the maker, is now available for sale.

The Satin Black six-string is now available at authorised distributors, featuring an eye-catching hot pink-themed humbucker, body line and 12th fret logo inlay. The Mainstream Sellout guitar appears to retain the specs from the Tickets to My Downfall signature model that was released in 2021, with an alder body, Canadian rock maple neck a 22-fret ebony fingerboard, and a sole Schecter Pasadena Plus humbucker.

Other specifications include fixed Schecter PT-H with string-thru body bridge with 14-inch fingerboard radius and Schecter mini locking tuners. The guitar also sports a Graph Tech XL TUSQ nut as well as a two-way adjustable truss rod.

Machine Gun Kelly recently responded to critics who branded him a “tourist” in the rock genre, calling himself a “rocket man,” in his acceptance speech for Favourite Rock Artist at the American Music Awards on 20 November. “We weren’t born on the moon but we looked at it and we were curious and then we went there… supposedly, and these two rock albums were me going to the moon,” MGK continued, adding “But I’m not done exploring the universe yet, and I am all genres.”

She opened up about how her fiancé reacted to the poetry, which she said is different from his writing about his own life in his music since "obviously he feels in control when he's telling his own story."

"Obviously he would have to be asked for his experience, but it was not easy , and I think he was really nervous and worried," she said. "There is a lot of explicit content in the book, obviously, and there was some fear there. Also, I mean, some of [the poems] are about him and are savage."

Machine Gun Kelly didn’t have to stretch his acting muscles too hard for his upcoming role. On Thursday, the trailer for the singer’s own semi-autobiographical film Taurus dropped, showing Kelly as a rising rockstar navigating fame.

In the zodiac-titled film, Kelly (real name Colson Baker) plays Cole, a rock star attempting to manufacture one more hit song amid the escalating pressures of celebrity and addiction. The trailer splices cuts from real life, with a shot of Baker walking through the 2021 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago for a surprise set where he dropped by the small stage for Bud Light-hosted sessions for select artists.

“I want it to sound far from everything. Like everything’s upside down,” he says in the trailer.

Written and directed by Tim Sutton (who worked with Kelly on last year’s western “The Last Son”), the film bears the director’s proclivity for moody, dramatic shots and heavy-handed musical scores. Kelly also plays a hand in the film’s production and is listed as one of the film’s executive producers along with Sutton and Gul Karakiz.

Kelly previously explained his ties to his character at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, People reported: “We were almost shying away from it being autobiographical, it felt like, at first. And then, I think, it just became me.”

Across the multi-day event, every influencer under the sun feverously posts their every move from the desert landscape. But don’t expect to see the “ Death Around The Corner ” musician in any of their footage. On April 12, MGK took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that he had actually been banned from attending Coachella over a decade ago without a proper reason.

“Never been to a Coachella,” he wrote. “They banned me in 2012 for whatever reason. I was looking forward to finally going this year, but my daughter’s volleyball tournament ended up on the same days, so y’all will have to let me know how it is. She comes first ✌🏼.”

Just before users online could lace up their boots to go to war from MGK, an old post resurfaced where he slammed the festival. In the April 29, 2012 post, MGK took aim at the festival’s approach to curation and more.

“Coachella is a huge joke,” he wrote. “It’s corporate as f*ck, and they only accept the accepted but fake as they don’t. Sad that music is so trendy now.”

More than 100 artists and tens of thousands of music fans will flock to Coachella Valley this weekend, but there’s one person who definitely won’t be there: Machine Gun Kelly .

Just hours ahead of the 2024 festival’s kick-off on Friday (April 12), the rapper-rocker claimed on X that he he’s never been to Coachella because “they banned me in 2012 for whatever reason.”

This year, Baker will miss out on a lineup led by headliners Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, The Creator. The two-weekend event will also feature a No Doubt reunion as well as performances from Peso Pluma, Lil Uzi Vert, Justice, Bizarrap, Sabrina Carpenter, Blur, Ice Spice, Sublime, Bleachers, Grimes, Jon Batiste, J Balvin, Jhené Aiko, Lil Yachty, DJ Snake and more.

The Cleveland-bred artist is fresh off the release of his 10-track joint EP with Trippie Redd, Genre: Sadboy . The set recently debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 .

Travis Barker returns to Machine Gun Kelly tour “against his doctor’s orders”

The Blink-182 drummer and regular MGK collaborator was hospitalised with pancreatitis in June

Travis Barker has returned to Machine Gun Kelly ‘s ‘Mainstream Sellout’ tour “against his doctor’s orders”.

MGK is currently out on the road in the US, having kicked off the extensive run of shows back in June .

Barker – a friend and collaborator of Machine Gun Kelly’s, who regularly drums in his live band – was hospitalised with pancreatitis later that month . The Blink-182 sticksman later made a surprise appearance at Kelly’s gig in LA .

Earlier this week, MGK (real name Colson Baker) wrote on Instagram Stories (via Billboard ): “Against his doctor’s orders AND with a broken thumb, I convinced @travisbarker to come join us for the last couple days [of the North American tour].”

The message appeared alongside a screenshot of the pair on a FaceTime video call.

Yesterday (August 10), Barker confirmed that he’d be making an appearance at last night’s concert at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. “I’m impregnating the entire crowd at the @machinegunkelly show tonight,” he tweeted. “With a broken thumb and torn tendons.”

A fan on Twitter has since shared footage of Barker and MGK playing a cover of Blink-182’s 1999 hit ‘All The Small Things’. Check out the video above.

Barker was hospitalised with pancreatitis on June 28, following a colonoscopy procedure. A few days later, he said in an update to fans that he’d been receiving “intensive treatment” and was “currently much better”

Machine Gun Kelly has just two gigs remaining on his current US run: Indianapolis tonight (August 11) and Cleveland on Saturday (13). He’ll then embark on the European leg next month before returning to the UK/Ireland in October.
