7 shops to buy the perfect gift from Rotterdam

Looking for a nice present from Rotterdam to bring home? Our editorial team selected 5 shops that are perfect for buying typical products and gifts that would make a nice present for friends and family.

Groos There is a busy, buzzy vibe in The Industriegebouw. From 2 June this is the new spot for Groos (old Dutch word for ‘proud’), a concept store for the local creative industry. You won’t find your typical Euromast keyring souvenir in this ‘warehouse of quality products from Rotterdam’. The store on the Goudsesingel is stocked with the merchandise of creatives, including design, art, design, fashion, and delicatessen wares. The store’s philosophy is to have everything under the one roof that Rotterdam feels ‘groos’ about. Achterklooster 13 groosrotterdam.nl

Rotterdam Tourist Information (VVV) Get all your visitor information at rotterdam.info, based in the 17th century Schielandshuis (once a city palace). You’ll find a visitor information site in the main hall of Central Station as well. You can buy Rotterdam and Holland souvenirs at the Station and in a souvenir shop on the Korte Hoogstraat. Clogs, Delfts Blue ornaments, clothing, books, caps, magnets—it’s all there. A Rotterdam Welcome Card can be purchased at these sites, giving you discounts on diverse attractions, museums, and restaurants. Coolsingel 114 rotterdam.info

Nultien If you want something a little different, try Nultien. This clothing store in the city’s north sells t-shirts, hoodies, dresses, and baby outfits with printed texts like ‘010 isn’t just a code’ (010 is the area code for Rotterdam). Nieuwe Binnenweg 95 nultien.nu

Brandstore De Rotterdamsche Oude Versunit 54 in the Markthal sells Made in Rotterdam products to take away and eat. Like Pinky Rose’s handmade syrups and (of course) Rotterdamsche Oude. Since the opening of the Markthal a couple of years ago, sales of this ‘aged’ cheese have exploded, with clients coming from as far as the United States and Canada. It’s not actually from Rotterdam, we hasten to add. The slightly sweet, smooth cheese is the product of North Holland’s pasture cows. ‘They simply give the best milk for cheese’, reasons the cheesemonger with a shrug. Oostzeedijk Beneden 85B brandstorederotterdamscheoude.nl

Foodelicious Rotterdam’s most delectable fares are stocked by Foodelicious. From jars of Zeemansboter (peanut butter), beetroot mustard, and Maasstroompjes (biscuits) to Ketelbinkie beer. With delicacies from all around the world, Fooddelicious on the Mariniersweg is a foodie’s paradise. Mariniersweg 47 foodelicious.nl

Het Rotterdams Warenhuis Hotel STROOM in the Llloydkwartier (Lloyd Quarter) has an in house store selling all sorts of special things from Rotterdam. Such as: backpacks, bags, baby clothes with fun inscriptions, Rotterdam-themed puzzles, calenders, and much more. It also has the 30kg XXL Feyenoord book that tells you all about ‘the best football club in the world’. Schiehavenkade 166 hetrotterdamswarenhuis.nl

Donner Bookstore Donner in the city centre sells travel guides and photography books focusing on Rotterdam, and also model kits of famous Rotterdam buildings. Coolsingel 119 donner.nl

A breakdown of the Rotterdam shopping experience

May 7, 2023 | Posted in: Netherlands

If you've been following me for a while, you know I travel to Rotterdam in the Netherlands quite often. Until now, I'd never really had the Rotterdam shopping experience, though, so when Rotterdam Partners invited me to come and check out their different shopping areas in light of the upcoming Black Friday, I took my camera and tucked away my wallet.

Rotterdam shopping: What is Black Friday?

Black friday in the netherlands, 1. maho quarter, 2. hoogstraat and korte hoogstraat, 3. the industry building, 4. the nieuwe binnenweg, 5. hofbogen, 6. de bijenkorf, 7. lijnbaan and koopgoot, 8. kruiskade, 9. van oldenbarneveltstraat, 11. witte de withstraat, 12. rotterdam market hall, other rotterdam shopping centres in the city, what to buy in rotterdam, special holiday season opening times, how to get to rotterdam, where to stay in rotterdam, don't forget travel insurance.

Rotterdam shopping

Many retailers open early on Black Friday but nowhere does it get as crazy as in the US, where there are even stores opening at midnight.

But where does the term come from? Apparently, from the crowds and traffic congestion that go hand in hand with the start of Christmas shopping. You can read more about this on Wikipedia .

black friday rotterdam

And it's not just shops that throw around discounts. Many restaurants, museums, and hotels take part in Black Friday in Rotterdam as well.

rotterdam malls

Come prepared:

  • Do your research, especially for more expensive items. The original price won't always be visible in stores.
  • It'll be super busy. Take public transportation and bring water and a snack.
  • Watch out for pick-pockets. The busier it is, the more active they are.

Rotterdam shopping areas: a breakdown of where to go shopping in Rotterdam

mall rotterdam

By the way, did you know that the Pannekoekstraat (“Pancake Street”) is actually named after a pancake restaurant? It is! And you can still get pancakes at Pannenkoekenhuis Dutch Diner, now on Meent 20.

souvenir shop rotterdam

Good to know: At one of the Hoogstraat, you'll find department store Hudson's Bay. At the top floor, there's a La Place eatery from where you can enter the rooftop terrace to get a view of the Markthal in the distance and the shopping street below.

big shop rotterdam

And if you want to feel like you're in New York, head to Saks Off 5th , an outlet store of the famous Saks on 5th Avenue in New York selling designer brands at prices discounted up to 60%.

The Industriegebouw or “Industry Building” is a rather new hotspot in Rotterdam. A 1952 industry building restored in its original state, it now houses office spaces, shops, and cafes.

cheap fashion rotterdam

Alfredo's Taquería serves Mexican cuisine with a modern twist while you can get breakfast all day long at By Jarmusch . Café @ Home is a popular spot for students and laptop workers but let's get to the stores, shall we?

Groos is where you find original gifts (for yourself or someone else) made in Rotterdam. There's more made-in-Rotterdam at VICO Movement , a local shoe brand and at Evernow , an independent design store and studio. Clothing and more store Loula is also worth checking out.

souvenir shop rotterdam

A favorite on the Nieuwe Binnenweg is probably gift shop Voorlopig , which means as much as “For the time being”. Lots of the gifts for sale here are handmade or limited edition and if you need a break, you can get coffee and cake from a local roaster and bakery at the back of the store. Take your time and if you see something you like, just get it, because you won't find it anywhere else.

Don't just stop at the stores I've mentioned, though. Take your time to do the Nieuwe Binnenweg. Walk it on one side, then come back on the other to make sure you haven't missed a thing and don't be afraid to walk into the littlest stores, such as Zigt Sieraden , which sells all kinds of jewelry from small and subtle to big and shiny, from other designers as well as from its own collection.

I often feel a bit uncomfortable when I'm the only person in a smaller store as if I'm being watched, but the smaller stores are exactly where you can find unique things, so go ahead and let your eyes wander around.

Good to know The Nieuwe Binnenweg also has a nice bar scene and can get just as lively at night as it is during the day.

rotterdam shopping area

The Bijenkorf (“de” is “the” in Dutch) is a Dutch shopping icon. Here you'll find clothing, linen, books, kitchen and writing supplies, suitcases, sportswear and more.

rotterdam shopping guide

The Rotterdam division of this warehouse chain is currently being renovated and has already gotten a large new beauty treatment area where you can get pampered with your favorite cosmetic brands. Since August 2018, it also has a brand new Coolsingel Café where you can enjoy a coffee with cake or a light lunch with – why not – champagne. Aside from being a big department store, De Bijenkort is also a historical monument you can visit on this tour of architectural highlights in Rotterdam .

where to shop in rotterdam

The same goes for the Koopgoot – literally translated as “the buying gutter” and the unofficial but widely used name the people of Rotterdam have given the Beurstraverse (“Stock Exchange Passage”). It's part of the Beursplein (“Stock Exchange Square”) that runs a level below ground while still being outdoors.

shopping mall in rotterdam

The Van Oldenbarneveltstraat is a small but exclusive shopping street featuring boutiques selling designer labels and high-end cosmetic stores. No high street chain stores here but you can find a few international big names, such as the Filippa K store.

best shopping rotterdam

Together with the Lijnbaan, the Kruiskade, the Van Oldenbarneveltstraat, the Koopgoot, and the Coolsingel, the Witte de Withstraat is part of what's known as the “Rotterdam Cool District”. It's also a street you'll learn more about if you go on the Architecture Highlights of Rotterdam tour .

rotterdam record stores

The 450 stalls definitely are inviting but I'm not sure if they'll give you the best bang for your buck. Then again, sometimes it's worth paying a little extra just for the experience.

Aside from the many stores in the city center, Rotterdam also has two big malls: Zuidplein and Alexandrium.

Rotterdam Zuidplein is the biggest mall in the Netherlands with a surface of 55,000 m² and it's only a 10-minute metro ride away from the center. This Rotterdam shopping center has 155 diverse stores as well as a food court. The mall also has a large underground parking space, a bicycle parking, and its own bus stop.

While Zuidplein is the biggest in size, the Rotterdam Alexandrium mall has more stores. With 200 shops in this Rotterdam shopping mall, it'll easily keep you busy for a day. Good to know is that Alexandrium consists of three different parts: a regular shopping mall, Alexandrium Megastores, and the “living mall” which focuses entirely on home decoration.

boutiques rotterdam

  • Nultien – Nultien or “010” sells apparel related to Rotterdam.
  • Groos – Groos is a concept store selling things made by the local creative industry, from socks to beer.
  • Het Rotterdams Warenhuis – This store, part of Hotel STROOM, sells all kinds of things produced in Rotterdam – from backpacks to puzzles and calendars.
  • Rotterdam Tourist Information – The Tourist Info gift shop sells a lot of Rotterdam-related souvenirs as well as things from the Holland region.
  • Foodelicious – The place to be for foodies, this store has a wide range of food and drinks produced in Rotterdam and surroundings.

And that's it for my recommendations! If you want even more inspiration, make sure to check the Rotterdam shopping page on the website of the Rotterdam Tourist Info. It has lists of stores per category so you can go in search of the kind of shops that interest you the most.

And then there are a few public holidays on which stores will remain closed:

  • Easter Sunday and Monday
  • December 25

In the Netherlands, stores can have sales all year round and so there are often times when you'll see discount posters in the shopping windows.

thalys rotterdam

I regularly work together with Thalys when I go to Rotterdam. Yes, these high-speed trains are a bit more expensive than the regular ones, but you do get a lot in return for that higher price:

  • You arrive sooner.
  • You're certain of a seat.
  • There's free WiFi.
  • You're certain of enough space (which really isn't the same as just getting a seat.
  • You get to charge your phone or another device as every seat has an electricity socket.
  • You can get some work done as every seat has a stow-away table.
  • And if you get a premium ticket, you can enjoy a lovely meal served right at your seat.

Check here for Thalys timetables and prices.

If you still need to book your plane ticket to the Netherlands, check Skyscanner for flight options .

shops rotterdam central station

Good to know: There are quite a few stores at Rotterdam Central Station too that you can only get to when you have a ticket (you need to go through some gates to reach the platforms).

By car It depends a bit on where you're coming from, but traveling by car to Rotterdam will almost always be more expensive and more of a hassle than going by train. Rotterdam is a big city and so there's always traffic, whether you're driving in, out, or around town.

If for some reason, it's more convenient for you to have your car around, or if you're traveling with a group of people, you can always park in one of the city's many paid parking lots. There are quite a few that have very reasonable prices for 24 hours of parking.

That being said, avoid parking on the street as it's much more expensive and limited in time. And if you come during the weekend, take into account that it can get very busy and you might have to look around for a spot – even in the parking garages.

premier suites rotterdam

I only spent one night here but can see how the apartments are a great solution for those looking to stay in Rotterdam for a while.

All apartments at Premier Suites have a fully-equipped kitchen, an open plan lounge and dining area with a flat-screen TV, comfy couch, and a dedicated work space, as well as a separate bedroom and a separate bathroom.

rotterdam apartments premier suites

There's free WiFi and all linen and towels are provided. Toiletries are complementary and a welcome tray with tea, coffee, and biscuits await you upon your arrival.

Definitely check out their website for more information, as it even has ground plans of the different apartments they have as well as a 360° view of an apartment.

Plan for the best, prepare for the worst. Travel insurance has you covered in case (part of) your trip gets canceled, you get sick or hurt abroad, and sometimes even when your electronics break or get stolen. I always make sure I'm covered on every trip I go on. Don't have travel insurance yet? Check out SafetyWing. They offer super flexible plans that you can even sign up for while you're already on your trip. On top of that, they were the first travel insurance to cover COVID, and when I got COVID, they reimbursed all of my expenses without making a fuss. Their customer support team is great and I can personally recommend them.

I was invited by Rotterdam Partners to come and check out the Rotterdam shopping scene so I could write about it. Thalys was so kind to offer me my train tickets and Premier Suites hosted me at one of their apartments. As always, this article reflects only my personal experience and opini

If you ever get to vacation in Rotterdam you will instantly be intrigued by the eclectic nature and atmosphere that makes it so unique from all of the other cities in Europe. There are lots of interesting quirks and fun facts that people don't know about this city. For example, if you wander around the streets you might notice little lights of red flames; they actually mark the spots where the city was bombed during the Second World War, and there are 400 of them in total! Rotterdam also boasts the biggest port in all of Europe and it is a multicultural place that is home to a total of 174 different nationalities (in fact, only half of the population is actually Dutch!).

As you walk around the city you will see some incredible examples of surrealist and modern architecture, most of which were built after the war. Other attractions include a diverse and lively nightlife, wonderful museums , and some pretty great malls and retail centres that you can shop at. Shopping Malls and Outlets in Rotterdam

Central plaza.

Right in the heart of the city and opposite the Rotterdam Central Station you will find one of the main shopping centres in the city. It is a great place to buy new items as well as eat dinner or grab coffee with a friend. If food is what you are looking for, make your way straight to The Gallery Kitchen!

As for shopping, this mall offers lots of places to explore. Check out Bargello Parfums for some wonderful smelling fragrances for both men and women, or one of the two Coccinelle Fashion shops for any kids' clothing that you need! The shopping centre is also covered, meaning that you will be well protected from the elements.

De Groene Passage

Although it is small, De Groene Passage offers fantastic shopping opportunities. Inside you will find stores and restaurants that actively practice being sustainable so you can shop confidently knowing that what you are buying and eating has the planet's best interests in mind. For example, the eatery called Spirit serves delicious organic and vegetarian meals, and it is a buffet-style restaurant so you only pay based on how much your plate weighs.

Looking to reinvent your home? The home decor store called Van Binnen sells plant-based paints, flooring, and cute decorations. Check out Wereldwinkel Rotterdam Centrum while you are in De Groene Passage; they have a nice stock of fairtrade items and some pretty unique things that would make fantastic gifts.

tourist shop rotterdam

A trip to Rotterdam wouldn't be complete without visiting Markthal, even if you aren't there to browse the stores. The building that houses the mall is nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam" and is quite a sight to behold! The incredible ceiling features fascinating paintings and other-worldly designs that will catch your eye as soon as you step through the doors. Construction of the building began in 2009 and was only completed in 2014, and it has already become a local landmark.

Aside from being an aesthetically intriguing piece of architecture, Markthal houses a selection of shops as well as many market stalls selling all sorts of items. Some of the names that you will see include Etos, Naturals, Kookwinkel Habitas, and Holland & Barrett. Near Rotterdam Station , Markthal is a great place to find street food and fine dining options, too!

Rotterdam Zuidplein

Shopping enthusiasts will absolutely want to check out the fashion boutiques and nice shops in Rotterdam Zuidplein. With a surface area spanning 55,000 meters squared, it is actually the largest mall in the entire Netherlands! It is found close to the city centre and can be reached easily via the metro.

In total, Rotterdam Zuidplein has 155 different stores as well as a food court where you can take a break between shopping. Come here for your next shopping spree in Rotterdam! If you have your own car you can park it in their underground parking lot, or cycle here and park your bike at the mall. The bus stops here, too.

Rotterdam Alexandrium

Ready for a Rotterdam shopping spree? This mall is not physically as big as the Zuidplein but it has more stores, and there are about 200 unique places to shop for clothes and other things. You can spend all afternoon exploring the shops of Rotterdam Alexandium.

This mall is separated into three different areas, each one with a different focus. There is a normal mall that sells clothing, jewelry, shoes, and more, as well as the Alexandrium Megastores where you can find even more things made by other designers. If you are on the hunt for home interior items and decor you should pay a visit to the "living mall" area.

The Best Shopping Areas in Rotterdam

Van oldenbarneveltstraat.

Van Oldenbarneveltstraat is small but full of amazing places to go shopping in Rotterdam. It is the perfect place for luxury shoppers to go as the stores around the area sell designer brand names, and there are high-end cosmetic stores as well. It is one of the best shopping destinations in the city so don't forget to come here at least once during your stay!

Aside from boutiques and stores selling the latest fashion, you will also find shoe shops, places to buy handbags, and more. The area mostly features French, Danish, and Swedish brands, as well as local designers like Susan Bijl and Monique van Heist, too. Although the stores here can be a bit expensive, the prices reflect the quality of the items and they will last you a while.

Korte Hoogstraat

For a completely different shopping experience check out the street called Korte Hoogstraat. This hidden gem in the city centre can introduce you to items that can't be found in most shops around the rest of Rotterdam. Don't expect to see many chain stores in Korte Hoogstraat but keep an eye out for those one-of-a-kind fashion pieces!

Interested in comic books? The store called Yendor will be your favorite place to visit. Funkie House is another nice store selling all of the latest street fashion trends, and Zonnewijzer offers every kind of kids' toy that you can think of. Korte Hoogstraat is a great spot to find gifts for others, or maybe a little something for yourself!

tourist shop rotterdam

Witte de Withstraat

Witte de Withstraat isn't only a good place for shopping in Rotterdam but also for checking out art galleries, too! Between visiting stores, you should take some time to appreciate the local artistic talent in one of the galleries next door, and then head out to dinner at one of the many restaurants.

The stores located in this part of the city can cater to all styles and budgets. Check out the independent shops, like Episode, which sell vintage clothing and items. Danny de Cactus is a store that specializes in decorations, and Design Studio Armeni sells some bold and colorful clothing items. The concept store called Swan is worth stopping by as well, and head to SEVENTYFIVE if you need a pair of hip new sneakers!

Oude Binnenweg

Oude Binnenweg is a nice place to shop, not only because of the stores but also because the area is beautiful. It is a historic street that has a cozy atmosphere and is home to some smaller stores. Most shops have a certain focus so you will need to find the right store to stop at, depending on what kind of stuff you want to buy.

Despite the fact that the shops in Oude Binnenweg are smaller and more specialized, there are still a wide variety of items that you can find. Looking for nice quality modern clothing for men and women? Head to Sissy Boy! The younger generations who frequent the street often prefer to shop at the Vans Store.

tourist shop rotterdam

Coolsingel is the top "shopping gutter" in Rotterdam and one of the best known places to go, so it might be busy. The street became even more popular after it finished its renovations in 2021, which took over three years to complete! Now the shopping street is back full force and ready to welcome everyone with good taste in fashion.

On Coolsingel you will find lots of international stores like Zara or Decathlon, for example. Make sure to check out the local department store called De Bijenkorf; it houses lots of luxury clothing brands that you will love.

Nieuwe Binnenweg

We mentioned Oude Binnenweg above, but it should not be confused with the Nieuwe Binnenweg as both areas offer a completely different way of shopping. On this street, you will find plenty of designer stores and fashion boutiques as well as charming coffee shops, bakeries, and bars. The neighborhood that it is located in is both hip and endearing, and it attracts people from all around the city centre.

The styles and trends sold in these stores vary quite a bit, and it is a convenient place to go shopping with friends or if you have a lot of things that you want to buy. Shopaholics will love browsing the wares in all of the shops, like the newest fashions at Joline Jolink. There is even a little gardening centre called Stek for all of you green thumbs!

Zwaanhals is one of the best places to find second hand items and vintage clothing in the entire city. Its location in Rotterdam Noord means that it will be a little out of the way but it is still worth a trip, especially if you like antiques and older clothing.

This area is home to shops like Lily Scarlet, Betje Krul Vintage, Ding & Dingen, Vintage Oudstijl Rotterdam , and Showroom 41 . As with most vintage shops, the things being sold can vary from week to week so you might want to stop by more than once during your stay in Rotterdam!

When I think about shopping in Rotterdam , the first thing that comes into my mind is the delicious Dutch cheese ! As a " cheese-aholic ," I would advise you to start shopping at Blaak . Here, you can shop for fresh deli , vegetables, delicious and exotic fruits , incredible pastries, and dutch cheese ! And where you can get it? At the Market Hall ! Markthal, aka Market Hall in English, is located in Blaak, and it is a market with various restaurants, shops, and residential apartments above them. You will be amazed by the interior while you are doing your shopping or enjoying your delicious food with a view. The Market Hall was opened in October 2014, and now it is a top tourist attraction point. In front of the Market Hall, there is also an open market taking place every Tuesday and Saturday. There you can buy fish, famous Dutch cheese, clothing, fresh fruits & vegetables and many more. Oh, also for a sweet apple pie check the famous cafe Dudok inside the Market Hall!

Markthal

Lijnbaan and Koopgoot

The second stop should be the Lijnbaan , which is the best-known Rotterdam shopping street . Here, you will find big retailers, such as Vero Moda, Mango, Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Bershka, Pull and Bear, and many more. Koopgoot street is similar to Lijnbaan, which means “ the buying gutter ” in English. These two connected streets are very vibrant at the heart of the city. Here, you can also find many festivals and activities for almost seven days a week. You can also find the biggest H&M in Europe ! If you are looking for a more traditional Dutch shop , head to HEMA. HEMA is like the Dutch version of Marks&Spencer . I love HEMA so much that I was visiting it at least once a week -right after I had bought Dutch pancakes from the street.

Lijnbaan and Koopgoot

10x Must sees in Rotterdam

tourist shop rotterdam

The gems of Rotterdam, all in one place. Whether it are the usual tourist attractions or the hidden spots that only real Rotterdammers know, you have to see them. Art, culture, activities, nature, beautiful buildings and innovative ideas. Rotterdam is one big must-see if you ask us.

1. Witte de Withstraat

Let's start with the coolest street in Rotterdam: the Witte de Withstraat. Why is this street so cool? It's just a little different from other streets. It is full of art, culture, delicious food and fun. Here you will find a number of cool art galleries, street art, cocktail bars and unique shops.

For example, take a look at Kunstinstituut Melly, where they exhibit art by contemporary artists. Or shop at Danny de Cactus, the most colourful store in Rotterdam where they have Middle Eastern home decorations such as nice lamps, plants, dream catchers and much more. Another great place to go is Mystiek, a spiritual shop where they also give readings such as palm reading and laying tarot cards.

If you want to discover Rotterdam at night, there is hardly a better place than the Witte de With. At night the street is filled with lively people having a drink. For example, drink a cocktail at Spikizi, a beer at Café de Witte Aap or treat yourself to a big burger at the Vegan Junkfood Bar.

When you leave the Witte de Withstraat, you will immediately enter the Museum Park . Here you will not only find museums such as the Boijmans van Beuningen, the NAI or the Kunsthal, but this has also become the home of the beautiful, unique Depot.

There's no denying that this is a must-see. That becomes clear as soon as you come face to face with this forty meter high mirrored building in the shape of an egg.

In the Depot, the Boijmans van Beuningen exhibits its collection to visitors. Here you can browse - independently or with a guide - between no fewer than 151,000 art objects. You can also learn a thing or two about conservation and restoration here; a unique extra that you don't normally get to see in a museum.

Don't forget to include a short stop on the roof terrace, which you can visit in the autumn of 2021. 75 trees have been placed here, so that you are in a forest at a height of 35 meters, with a beautiful view. How cool is that?

3. Kop van Zuid

For the next must-see we cross the Erasmus Bridge. Here you will find the Kop van Zuid, one of the absolute top places in Rotterdam with unique buildings and a New York atmosphere.

Are you coming by subway? Then you can immediately admire one of the most special stations in Rotterdam, namely the Wilhelminaplein. A station with cool futuristic shapes, designed by Zwarts & Jansma architects.

With the station behind you, you come face to face with De Rotterdam, an architecturally beautiful building with three interconnected towers that provide space for offices, apartments and the Nhow hotel. Our tip is to stay here overnight, because this gives you a beautiful view over the Erasmus Bridge and the Maas.

In addition, the Kop van Zuid is the site of the warehouses and is home to Hotel New York, the former management building of the Holland-America Line. But the Kop van Zuid is still an important place for sailing travellers. This is because regular cruise ships dock with tourists who come to explore the city.

For a bite to eat at the Kop van Zuid you can go to the Foodhallen, this is a hall located in the warehouse, filled with several nice restaurants. Or check out By Ami, where not only the interior, but also the dishes are colourful. For delicious sushi we recommend Mood.

4. Watertaxi

Not a must-see, but a must-try! We naturally want to return to the centre of Rotterdam from the Kop van Zuid. And we do this with the water taxi. A boat trip on the Maas is of course an absolute must if you want to experience a city like Rotterdam.

From the Kop van Zuid you can easily board at the water taxi ranks, after which you sail at great speed over the waves back to the city centre. During your ride on the Maas, you can admire the city from the water. On the one hand De Rotterdam and Hotel New York and on the other the Euromast, the new Zalmhaven tower and of course the Erasmus Bridge.

tourist shop rotterdam

5. Schielandshuis

Once back in the centre we naturally want to admire the Coolsingel, the city boulevard on which the City Hall is located and under which the Koopgoot runs. Just down a side street from the Coolsingel and there you will find the Schielandshuis, a building from the 17th century and one of the oldest historical buildings in Rotterdam.

Our tip is to visit the secret garden of the Schielandshuis, where you can sit down and order something delicious in the restaurant.

tourist shop rotterdam

6. Noordereiland

We continue the must-sees of Rotterdam and make a short exit to the Noordereiland. For this we also have to cross a bridge, but this time it is not the Erasmus Bridge, but the red Willemsbrug. The nice thing about this bridge is that it offers a beautiful view of the nearby Erasmus Bridge. A walk with a top view.

Another reason why you really should make the crossing to the Noordereiland is because of De Hef. An enormous, sturdy and green bridge that separates the Noordereiland from the Feijenoord district.

For a bite to eat or a drink, you can go to pop-up restaurant A La Plancha in the summer: a top place in the city. This restaurant is located on the Maas and is inspired by Mediterranean fish restaurants. A La Plancha therefore means “from the plate”. Fresh seafood, a breeze through your hair and a beautiful view of the centre of Rotterdam. What more do you want?

When walking the Willemsbrug back towards the centre, you will already see the next must-see. On your right is the water Aloha. A low-waste restaurant, located in the old Tropicana pool. The fact that it is an old swimming pool is also clearly visible. But this makes it extra authentic if you ask us.

Aloha is all about dishes and drinks from the local area, which represent the season. A creative method and unique dishes with as little waste as possible. Not only do they get their products from local farmers, they also pick their own ingredients in the Rotterdam countryside, they have their own vegetable garden and they make their own liqueurs, vinegars, misos and soy sauces.

Our tip is to choose a table on the terrace and order the oyster mushroom bitterballen. Be sure to ask how they get these Rotterdam delicacies, because the story will surprise you!

8. Oude Haven

We continue our route to the Oude Haven, for a piece of Rotterdam history. Did you know that the first jetty here was already built around 1350, making it the oldest port in Rotterdam? This is also where the iconic White House is located: the first skyscraper in Europe.

Of course we admire the history of the Oude Haven with a drink in our hands. Because the Oude Haven is the place where the terraces bulge with people that are enjoying drinks and snacks.

Sip cocktails at Stockholm or Noah, eat Indian cuisine at 91Spices, sit down for a hip lunch at Lot & Daan and enjoy Michelin-starred dishes at Fitzgerald.

Feel like shopping? Then walk to the MAHO quarter , a nice part of Rotterdam Centre filled with unique boutiques and cool coffee bars.

For original interiors and the best gadgets, you can go to Homestock, for example. Do you want to shop vintage? Then we recommend Hendrikus - where the owner has managed to acquire cool design items and sell them in his shop - or Very Cherry. Also recommended are LOT Boutique and Imagine By Kim, where they sell nice clothing items and accessories.

For a coffee we recommend Nine Bar, a cosy place with an Australian vibe. For a juice you go to Sajoer, eat pizza at De Pizzabakkers, snack at Tante Nel, have a beer at Bokaal and drink cocktails at Botanero.

10. De Luchtsingel

Our last must-see is a yellow wooden bridge, which connects Rotterdam North with the centre. It is no less than 390 meters long and takes you past places such as Biergarten, the Hofplein fountain, the Schieblock, café Bird and Park Pompenburg.

That this place is a must-see was not always the case. The area around the bridge has been forgotten for years. A blind spot in the centre of the city. Such a shame! The Luchtsingel was created to give this area a boost. A wonderful addition if you ask us, because De Luchtsingel has exactly that raw edge that Rotterdam is known for.

Walk it, take pictures and take in the centre of Rotterdam. A real must-see that should not be missed during your visit!

17 Best Thrift Stores and Vintage Shops in Rotterdam

Looking for the best vintage shops and thrift stores in Rotterdam? You have come to the right place! I’ve scoured the streets of Rotterdam looking for the best shops in the city. Rotterdam is a thrifters paradise. There are so many second-hand shops in the city that it’s impossible to visit them all on a weekend city trip. That’s why I have put together this vintage Rotterdam shopping guide to help you find the best second-hand fashion in the city!

The city of Rotterdam

canals in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and is known for being the largest port in Europe, having a skyline with outstanding architecture, and a progressive mentality.

Rotterdam is absolutely worth visiting and you will not be bored traveling to this corner of the Netherlands. The city’s thriving cultural scene,  multi-ethnic diversity, and avant-garde mentality will surely blow you away.

Aside from the excellent museums, cool music venues, and amazing architecture, Rotterdam also has a cool vintage fashion scene .

Rotterdam is easy to get around on foot and if you think walking around is taking up too much of your time, renting a bike in Rotterdam is an excellent alternative.

Public transport is rather expensive. A single ticket costs € 4 and a 1-day tourist ticket will set you back € 14,50.

Rotterdam second hand shops are abound in the city

There are so many thrift stores and vintage shops in Rotterdam that making a plan to visit most of them while you’re in Rotterdam is not a bad idea. Rotterdam is not that big but the main reason why a plan comes in handy is the opening hours of all the shops which are quite irregular. Be sure to check them out before you plan your trip!

A lot of the shops are situated in the Zwaanhals, a multicultural, up-and-coming street in the North of Rotterdam. Visiting the Zwaanhals should definitely be on your list and is the place to go if you don’t have much time on your hands. Six of the vintage shops on this list are located at the Zwaanhals.

The others vintage shops are scattered all over the city. The best thing to do when visiting Rotterdam is to explore a certain area every day and check beforehand which vintage shops are in that area and if they are open.

As said before, many vintage shops have very limited opening hours and some of them even open up only three days a week!

Without further ado, here is my vintage shops Rotterdam guide!

Cheap fashion

Cheap fashion is located at the Meent and is by far the coolest vintage store in Rotterdam. Come here to find some second-hand sneakers, old Levi’s jeans, and cool jackets and hats. They also sells a nice array of vintage hand bags.

Where to stay in Rotterdam

It’s not easy to find sustainable accommodation options in the center of Rotterdam, Some hotels seem to make an effort and quite a few large chain hotels have a Green key certificate but at Travelers & Dreamers we like to spend our money locally.

As you travel to Rotterdam, staying at a “wikkelboat” is a unique and fun experience. Wikkelboats are tiny houseboats that are sustainably constructed at the banks of the canals near the center of Rotterdam. You’ll have to walk a bit to the center (or better rent a bicycle in

Where to make like a local in Rotterdam

Sep 7, 2021 • 7 min read

Rotterdam's Het Park is popular with locals for its green space, public art, and events.

Rotterdam's Het Park is popular with locals for its green space, public art, and events.

Nobody wants to be a tourist. This guide will steer you to some of the best local hangouts in Rotterdam, showcasing the city’s arts scene, culinary hotspots, and nightlife.

noord_man_met_bril_street_art_Peter_Gooris.jpg

Learn like a local

If you want to dive right into the deep end, Rotterdam has several venues that celebrate contemporary art in the local context.  TENT  is one of them. Located along trendy Witte de Withstraat, the space provides artists with a platform to explore topics that matter in Rotterdam through exhibitions and performances.

On the same street, you’ll find  Kunstinstituut Melly , another contemporary arts center offering creative reflections on timely issues, both local and international. And off Witte de Withstraat, there’s  Garage Rotterdam , a cutting-edge exhibition space housed in an old VW garage.

For a more traditional cultural day out, Museumpark is the place to go. As its name suggests, this urban oasis is surrounded by the city’s major museums, including the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen , which will offer access to the entire collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen when it opens in late 2021; the Het Nieuwe Instituut , which focuses on design; the Chabot Museum , dedicated to Dutch artist Hendrik Chabot; the Kunsthal , a contemporary and modern art museum that only displays temporary exhibitions; and the Natural History Museum . The park’s manicured gardens and sculptures alone make this destination worth a visit.

Depot558A9085_Iris-van-den-Broek.jpg

Tour like a local

Despite Rotterdam’s hearty embrace of modern living and shared mobility concepts (including, most recently, electric scooters ), the humble bike remains king of the road. Those who don’t fancy navigating the city’s cycle lanes on their own could always join a tour. The good folk at  Bike n Bite  run regular excursions throughout the city, with a healthy emphasis on local cuisine.

Operating under the tagline ‘come a stranger, leave a local’ is  Inside Rotterdam Tours . It runs cycling trips around the city, as well as tours on foot, all of which take visitors off the tourist trail to lived-in neighborhoods that aren’t featured on postcards, such as Katendrecht .

Acquainting visitors with the local street art is  Rewriters Rotterdam . Though it offers guided tours of the city’s murals, you can also get the backstory behind local street art and creators from their app, which anyone can download to their phone for on-the-go info.

Escape like a local

It might surprise some to learn that Rotterdam has a beach. Hoek van Holland’s sandy shores are invariably at the mercy of the Dutch weather, but on sunny days, the beach throngs with visitors.

The journey is easy (a subway ride followed by a bike trip, aided by one of Rotterdam’s many bike-share apps), but some stay overnight, hunkering down in the ritzy  Largo Beach Villas  that line the shore. For a quirky stay, book a night at the  old military bunker  that’s been converted into a holiday home.

0T2A1413_Hoek-van-Holland_Iris-van-den-Broek.jpg

Hoek van Holland’s seafront restaurants have a strong emphasis on sustainability.  Pele Surf Shack  serves purely plant-based food and drinks in a setting that wouldn’t look out of place on a tropical island — until the breeze blowing off the North Sea reminds visitors that they’re a long way from the Caribbean, that is.

Then there’s  PLSTK Cafe . Tucked away in the sand dunes, this cozy restaurant caters to carnivores, vegans, and everyone in between — and prides itself on eschewing plastic.

Expect to see a lot of British while you’re in Hoek van Holland — it’s the departure point for ferries to England.

Go green like a local

The green lungs of Rotterdam, Kralingse Bos is a forest on the northeastern outskirts of the city where locals like to go for fresh air and recreation. Its forest trails attract weekend hikers, joggers, and horse riders, while the gigantic lake in the middle — Kralingse Plas — is the preserve of rowers and sailors.

2017_Kralingsebos2-IrisvanDenBroek_Redactionee_iris-van-den-broek.jpg

Leafy Het Park (known to locals as Euromast Park) is another cherished pocket of green, this one in the heart of the city. Overlooking the Nieuwe Maas river, it’s a place where falling leaves tumble into limpid waterways. Given the scenery, it’s no surprise that it’s popular for jogging, picnicking, and book reading. For a more quite Escape the crowds at lesser-known green gems such as Luchtpark Hofbogen , Dakpark or Historische Tuin Schoonoord .

Many Rotterdammers have embraced, to some extent, the concept of sustainability, a key tenant of which is buying local produce. There’s plenty of that at the  Rotterdamse Oogst  farmer’s market, where punters and purveyors of produce unite every Saturday over a love of local food.

Eat like a local

Rotterdam is a vital part of a veritable Dutch gastro revolution. Hotspots like the  Fenix Food Factory  and  Deliplein  — both in trendy Katendrecht — are helping drive the city’s culinary reputation forward, with artisan producers and casually brilliant restaurants.

There’s a growing emphasis on sustainability. Those keen to get on board (in more ways than one) would do well to reserve a table at  Gare du Nord , an organic vegan restaurant that has taken over an old train carriage.

Rotterdam’s propensity for building upwards has given rise to a number of rooftop restaurants, where locals go to survey their city over dinner.  Fontein Rooftop  is one to note, as is  Gastrobar ELVY  and Teds , which serves an all-day brunch next to a vegetable garden.

There’s fine dining aplenty, too.  Heroíne  is a prime example of Rotterdam’s unstuffy contemporary culinary scene, and the Industrial Building it’s housed in is a local landmark.

Sometimes, the old dishes are the best. Cue the rijsttafel, an elaborate smorgasbord of spicy sides served with rice, imported from Indonesia during the colonial era. It is a special occasion meal, and you can find it at Dewi Sri .

For other Rotterdam standards, visit a traditional café for coffee or a drink. Popular spots to unwind include Melief Bender , open since 1876; Boudewijn , known for its extensive beer menu; or Jazzcafé Dizzy , a great place to find low-key live music. And, since beer is a tradition here, too, don’t miss the local breweries. Brouwerij Noordt focuses on simple but high-quality beers, Stadshaven Brouwerij draws on its location in a former fruit warehouse to create many of its brews, and Brewpub Reijngoud ’s cool brewery space is a great place to enjoy a beer and some pub food.

Rotterdam is more than just beer, though. It’s a melting pot, and The Kruiskade area is a great place to find international cuisine, from Vietnamese to Caribbean to Javanese and everything in between. Or head north to De Toko for fusion cuisine that creates popular spins on Asian dishes.

Nightlife like a local

Most good nights take unexpected turns. If you want to get whisked away by fun-loving Rotterdammers, excellent areas to start are Witte de Withstraat, Pannekoekstraat and the Meent. All of these districts have a variety of bars to hop around.

Many of Rotterdam’s breweries have great nightlife scenes, too. The aforementioned Stadshaven Brouwerij is among the options to check out after dark.

Disused shipping containers seem to be a hallmark of cool these days, and  Containerbar Noord  has plenty of them. It’s another young and fashionable place to drink and dance to DJs.

In summer, take advantage of the warmer temperatures and look for one of the temporary pop-ups and beer gardens that open up throughout the city. For a garden atmosphere, try Weelde , an urban farm, grab a bite to eat at BIRD 's outdoor space, or for music festival vibes stop by M4H’s Keilecafe .

If you haven’t got your dancing shoes on, Rotterdam has a clutch of stylish wine bars where languorous evenings are spent putting the world to rights over a good bottle.  FOK  and  Bar Verward  are among them.  Walsjerot is a wine bar with dozens of options on tap- you're able to pour yourself however much you like, whether it's a taste or a full glass.

Angling for a cocktail to wind down the night? Head to The Rumah for modern spins on classic drinks, sample a taste of Latin America at Botanero , or enjoy the soulful atmosphere at Mavis .

The 10 Best Rotterdam Attractions (Suggested by Locals)

Photo of author

Rotterdam is a city different from any other Dutch city. Rotterdam has a unique mix of authentic nostalgic neighborhoods and very modern architecture in its center. In addition, the river Maas divides Rotterdam into two parts, and this vast river provides Rotterdam with breathtaking skylines nowhere else to be found in The Netherlands.

The 10 Best Tourist Attractions In Rotterdam

  • The Markthal, a modern indoor food market of unique design
  • The Erasmus bridge, spanning the river Maas
  • Euromast provides a breathtaking view of Rotterdam
  • De Kuip, the football stadium of the local football team Feyenoord
  • Koopgoot, a modern underground shopping center
  • Zoo “Diergaarde Blijdorp” for a lovely afternoon with the kids
  • The Cube Houses, an example of innovative architecture
  • The Old Harbour, experience Rotterdam like it used to be
  • The SS Rotterdam, a former cruise ship in the style of the ’50s
  • The statue “the destroyed city” from Zadkine

Taking a harbor cruise will give you a good first impression of Rotterdam because it will already show you some of these highlights. A harbor cruise is one of the most popular tourist activities in Rotterdam.

Map Of 10 Best Tourist Attractions In Rotterdam

In the map below, you can see the location of all the tourist attractions in Rotterdam discussed below. If you click on the numbers, you will see more information and click through to the sites and attractions’ websites.

What To See in Rotterdam in One Day?

To explore Rotterdam thoroughly, you will need a few days. Unfortunately, many of the city’s visitors will have only one day available.

If you only have one day in Rotterdam, I recommend visiting the following highlights in Rotterdam’s center.

  • Start your day by visiting “the destroyed city” statue of Zadkine near Leuvenhaven (10). This statue stands in the middle of the area destroyed by the German bombardment and is the heart of Rotterdam. You will immediately appreciate its traumatic history and why Rotterdam is a diverse mixture of modern vs. older architecture.
  • Walk 100 meters to the south and admire the Erasmus bridge (2) while having a coffee at the quays.
  • Walk 300 meters north to the Koopgoot (5) , admire its award-winning architecture, and do your first shopping of the day.
  • Walk 10 minutes to the Markthal (1), a large building that houses food shops, restaurants, and apartments under one roof.
  • Admire the Cube Houses (7) on your way to the Old Harbor .
  • Lunch at one of the many terraces overlooking the Old Harbor (8) and appreciate how Rotterdam used to be.
  • Take a water taxi to the SS Rotterdam (9) . Treat yourself to a guided tour of this magnificent ship and enjoy drinks and dinner on its many terraces. Here you will have the best view of the Rotterdam skyline.

  • Alternatively, Visitors from the United States may be interested in taking a water taxi to Delfshaven from where the Pilgrims, the United States’ founding fathers, departed on their way to board the Mayflower in Southampton.
  • An excellent alternative place to have dinner is at the top of the Euromast (3) , the highest point of Rotterdam overlooking the entire city.

The 10 Best Rotterdam Attractions

What are the places to visit in Rotterdam and the things to do in Rotterdam?

Let’s start our Rotterdam sightseeing tour in the center of the city.

1. The Markthal

The Markthal (Market Hall) is a vast construction near the Grote Markt. This building’s unique aspect is that it combines food shops with restaurants and apartments, all in one building.

The Markthall offers a place for 220 apartments, 4600 m2 of shopping space, and 1600 m2 for restaurants. It also has a parking garage beneath the Markthal with parking spaces for more than 1000 cars. The Markthal was inaugurated in 2014 by The Dutch Queen Maxima.

I have visited the Markthal many times and find it an impressive building with unique, fascinating architecture. In addition, many food shops offer every possible food you may be interested in. The shops are beautifully decorated, and they all look pretty but are also expensive.

The Markthal in Rotterdam looks like the Bazar in Istanbul and is usually quite crowded. Therefore, if you would like to have dinner in one of the restaurants in the Markthal, it is advisable to make a reservation beforehand.

2. The Erasmus Bridge

The Erasmusbrug is located in Rotterdam’s center and connects Rotterdam’s center with the south bank of the river Maas. The Erasmus Bridge is relatively new and was built in 1996.

The Erasmus bridge has been named after the famous scientist and humanist “Erasmus” and is nicknamed “the swan” by the locals. Naturally, it requires some imagination, but you can imagine a swan’s neck in the bridge’s construction.

It is exquisite whether you see a swan in the construction. But, interestingly, this colossal bridge can still be opened for large ships, mainly cruise ships, to allow them to sail further upstream to dock in the more upstream parts of the harbor.

The Erasmus Bridge is crucial for daily traffic to and from the city center. For example, when Feyenoord plays a football game at De Kuip, the shortest way from Rotterdam Central Station to De Kuip is over the Erasmus bridge, so I have passed it many times….!

3. Euromast, Highlight Of Rotterdam

tourist shop rotterdam

The Euromast is a tower in Rotterdam designed by Hugh Maaskant and constructed between 1958 and 1960. The Euromast is the highest building in Rotterdam at 195 meters . Their slogan is “ Be on top ,” an appropriate slogan for the city’s tallest building.

Some restaurants are located in the Euromast with breathtaking views of Rotterdam and the river Maas.

You can even rent a suite to sleep at 100 meters if you can still sleep with that thought in mind. Finally, for the daredevils among us, there are also possibilities for skydiving and abseilen from the top of the Euromast.

You can visit their website here for more information about The Euromast. The website offers all the information you need and is available in English.

4. The Stadium Of Feyenoord Rotterdam

The Kuip is a football stadium located in Rotterdam South. The stadium offers a place to forty-seven thousand and five hundred people. De Kuip is the stadium where the Rotterdam Football Club named ‘’ Feyenoord ‘’ plays their home games. It is an old stadium built in 1937 and renovated in 1993.

The stadium is unique because it is built from steel, making it shake when Feyenoord scores a goal. There are plans to create a new, more modern stadium on the river’s south bank, although the financing remains problematic. De Kuip is known for its unique football experience. According to the local fans of Feyenoord Rotterdam, the stadium breathes a football atmosphere .

5. Where To Shop in Rotterdam?

The Koopgoot is beautiful and has won many architectural prizes. The Koopgoot is located underground but is still really easily accessible, and I recommend visiting it when you’re in Rotterdam.

tourist shop rotterdam

The Koopgoot, literally translated as the “ buying valley “, is known for its many shops. De Koopgoot can easily be reached from Central Station with the metro because the metro station “Beurs” is in the middle of the Koopgoot.

Shops: There aren’t many shops that offer premium brands like Gucci or Prada. Although prices are not at outlets’ levels, many clothing brands are less known but attractive, affordable, and of good quality .

tourist shop rotterdam

6. Diergaarde Blijdorp, The Local Zoo.

The Blijdorp Zoo is located in a residential neighborhood with the same name, Blijdorp, one of the popular neighborhoods for expats.

The Blijdorp Zoo opened in 1895 and is one of the oldest and largest zoos in The Netherlands. The zoo welcomes approximately 1,5 million visitors annually, making it the largest zoo in the country. Blijdorp is a charming zoo near the city center, ideal for an afternoon with the kids.

Blijdorp has different sections where the various animals are housed, like in any other zoo. However, I found the Oceanium the most impressive part of the zoo because it allows you to walk under aquariums and watch the tropical fishes from below, which is a spectacular sight.

Public Transport: Traveling to Blijdorp with the Randstad Rail ( a metro connecting Rotterdam to The Hague ) is easy. A few hundred meters from the zoo’s main entrance is a metro station.

7. The Cube Houses, Innovative Architecture

The Cubes Houses are a prime example of innovative modern architecture in the center of Rotterdam near The Oude Haven ( The Old Harbour). They were built between 1982 and 1984 and were designed by the architect Piet Blom.

When I first saw the Cube Houses, I found them weird but interesting. The Cube houses gave Rotterdam the reputation of a city that has embraced modern architecture to make the best of the center’s destruction during the war.

tourist shop rotterdam

8. The Old Harbor

The Old Harbor is near the Cube House and has become popular, with plenty of terraces to sit and relax after a busy day of enjoying Rotterdam. In addition, there are quite a few restaurants and bars in the Old Harbor to sit down for a drink or something to eat.

The Old Harbor is where you can still appreciate how Rotterdam used to be. The famous White House, overlooking the old harbor, miraculously escaped the German bombs in 1940 and still stands majestically at the harbor entrance.

9. SS Rotterdam, A Cruise Ship In The Style Of The ’50s

The SS Rotterdam (steamship Rotterdam) is a former cruise ship of the Holland America line moored in the Maashaven (Maas harbor) on the south bank of the river Maas. The SS Rotterdam is unique because it has been completely renovated in the style of the ’50s when it still used to sail the oceans.

tourist shop rotterdam

The SS Rotterdam can be visited. You can have dinner and drinks at the SS Rotterdam and even book a hotel room since it has also been rebuilt as a hotel.

The SS Rotterdam offers a unique experience and the best views of the skylines of Rotterdam.

It will be a delightful way to spend an afternoon, even if it happens to be an occasional rainy afternoon.

10. What You Should Know About Rotterdam

The picture below shows the area destroyed by the German bombardment in May 1940. Red lights on the ground mark the border of this area.

Even when you don’t notice the red lights on the ground, you will immediately recognize that the buildings inside and outside the “burning border (as it is called) are entirely different; hence, the atmosphere in those parts will be completely different.

tourist shop rotterdam

The statue of Zadkine, called “ the destroyed city ” is also a vivid reminder of what has happened to Rotterdam. The sculpture resembles a man with his heart torn out like the heart was torn out of Rotterdam on that fateful day in May 1940.

It is a trauma that Rotterdam will probably never be able to forget . You can find this impressive statue at Plein 1940 at the end of Leuven Haven, in the middle of the destroyed area.

Where To Go Out In Rotterdam?

If you want a fun night out, the most exciting place is the Witte de Withstraat, packed with bars and restaurants . On warmer days, the terraces outside are loaded with (mostly) young people, and it has become one of the most vibrant areas of Rotterdam.

Alternatively, especially if you are more into theaters and movies, you may try out the area around the Stadhuisplein, which also has many restaurants for those looking to have dinner before or after a show or movie. Stadhuisplein is also next to the shopping area Lijnbaan which may offer a very tempting combination for some.

If you want a romantic evening in Rotterdam, I advise you to have dinner at the SS Rotterdam or The Euromast . If you have dinner on the SS Rotterdam terraces, you will have the best view of the Rotterdam skyline possible. The restaurant on top of the Euromast offers a magnificent view of the entire city and the river.

Is Rotterdam Better Than Amsterdam?

Rotterdam differs from most other cities in The Netherlands , the older charming historical cities with canals in the city centers. That is how Rotterdam used to be before the bombardment of its city center in 1940.

Still, the city has made the best of this traumatic experience and revised itself into a modern, vibrant city with a mixture of contemporary architecture built on historical roots. Therefore, Rotterdam deserves a visit if you want to experience the modern side of the Netherlands too.

Rotterdam is not better than Amsterdam, nor is Amsterdam better than Rotterdam. But what is true is that Rotterdam is different.

18 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Rotterdam

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated Dec 25, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam lies on both banks of the Nieuwe Maas, the tidal southern arm of the Rhine, where it's joined by the little River Rotte. It's also the world's largest port, home to the massive Europoort facility through which so much freight passes on its way to and from the continent.

Although almost completely destroyed by German air attacks in 1940, central Rotterdam was energetically rebuilt after the war and replanned with modern shopping streets, residential districts, and high-rises. Today, it is one of the most modern and architecturally interesting places to visit in Europe.

Despite its modernity, the city dates back to medieval times and was already prosperous by the 13th century, when a dam was built to separate the Rotte from the Nieuwe Maas, hence the city's name. Rotterdam has also long been important as a cultural hub, its early prosperity leading to the birth of Rotterdam's most celebrated citizen, the humanist Erasmus, born here in 1467.

For visitors and travelers, Rotterdam is as popular for its vibrant entertainment options as it is for its many fine museums, splendid architecture, and maritime tourist attractions. It's well worth including on your Netherlands travel itinerary.

To help you make the most of your time, be sure to read our list of the top tourist attractions and things to do in Rotterdam.

Maritime Museum Rotterdam

Rotterdam's Old Harbor (Oude Haven), part of the city's revitalized Maritime District, is a boat basin filled with restored historic boats, including houseboats lived in by locals.

In good weather, you can sit outside one of the many cafés and restaurants and enjoy people watching, or stroll around and watch the boats being painted or repaired. Signs identify the ages of the boats and show pictures of this area in its heyday as a commercial port and shipyard.

A short walk from here is Maritime Museum Rotterdam . Established in 1873, the museum provides a fascinating look into the city's connection to the sea and its many waterways. Its large collections cover the history of shipping and seafaring, including ship models, a reconstruction of a 2,000-year-old vessel, and numerous seafaring paintings.

Another marine-related tourist attraction is the adjoining Maritime Museum Harbor , an open-air facility that's home to the well-preserved 19th-century ironclad Buffel , as well as an old lightship. All told, more than 20 historic vessels are on display here. Both facilities offer English-language guided tours.

A recent addition to Rotterdam's roster of important old vessels is the SS Rotterdam . Launched in 1958, it's considered the finest Dutch-built passenger vessel ever to sail. This sumptuously decorated vessel is now a hotel and museum, and one of the favorite things to do here is have lunch or dinner in its dining room.

For those traveling with kids, check out the Kids Marina , were youngsters can captain their own mini-version of a cargo or passenger vessel.

Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, one of the Netherlands' (and Europe's) most important art centers, is known for its superb collections of paintings, sculptures, and applied and decorative arts from across the continent.

Painters of the 14th to 16th centuries are particularly well represented, with works by Hubert and Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The 17th century is represented by Rembrandt and Rubens (26 of the latter's works can be viewed), while later centuries are represented by Monet, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. Modern painters represented include Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall.

For a truly memorable experience, check into tickets for the museum's occasional opening of the "depot." This unique event allows public access to the museum's storage areas, allowing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a gallery's workings and rarely seen artworks.

Address: Museumpark 18, 3015 CX Rotterdam

Official site: www.boijmans.nl/en/

Wereldmuseum

Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, or " World Museum ," is another great museum to visit. Founded in 1883, this ethnographic museum features more than 1,800 different artifacts from across the globe. Most ancient and modern cultures are featured to some degree here, providing a fascinating look at the evolution of world cultures.

The museum also holds related events and lectures throughout the year, including family-friendly activities. Guided tours are available. A restaurant and shop are located on the premises.

Address: Willemskade 25, 3016 DM Rotterdam

Great St. Lawrence Church

Great St. Lawrence Church (Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk) is all that's left of Rotterdam's medieval buildings, most of which were destroyed during WWII. Located in Grote Kerkplein, the late Gothic church dates from the 15th century and was built on once marshy ground giving the building a peculiar lean that was only halted after its foundation was rebuilt in 1650. It was heavily damaged in bombings, but was fully restored at the end of the war.

Upon entering the church, you'll be struck by the beauty of the bright interior, an effect heightened by the colored glass of its windows. The church is famous for its three Danish organs, the largest of which stands on a marble base on the inside wall of the tower. The bronze doors of the main entrance, on the theme of War and Peace , are by the Italian artist Giacomo Manzu, and in front of the church is a statue of Rotterdam's most famous son, Erasmus.

Guided tours are available, and the modest admission fee includes a very informative English-language audio guide. The church also hosts frequent music concerts and other events.

Address: Grotekerkplein 15, Rotterdam

The Cube Houses

Rotterdam is home to many fine examples of modern architecture, much of it inspired by the city's waterside setting, as well as a response to the devastation of WWII. Pushing the architectural envelope to the max are the city's famous Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen).

Designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom, this block of houses, with their unique cube-shaped upper stories, are clearly visible from a walk through the Old Harbor. One of them, the Show Cube , is open to visitors and contains displays on the design and history of the buildings. An interesting museum dedicated to chess is also located here.

Another architectural gem is the White House (Witte Huis). Once Europe's tallest building, this stunning 10-story Art Nouveau structure was built in 1898 and is now a National Heritage Site, with superb views from its rooftop.

Address: Overblaak 70, 3011 MH Rotterdam

Official site: https://kubuswoning.nl/en/

Het Nieuwe Instituut

Those with an interest in architecture and building design should visit the Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI). Translated literally as "The New Institute," this modern museum focuses on the development of various architectural movements over the decades. There is of course a particular emphasis on Dutch styles, but other global design movements are also featured.

Newer exhibits have been added that feature the field of digital culture. In addition to its exhibits, visitors can visit Sonneveld House, an example of a modernist architectural style dating from the 1920s that's located just across the street. A shop and café, along with a pleasant garden, are also open to visitors.

Colorful painted arch ceiling at the Rotterdam Market Hall

One of the most popular gathering points in Rotterdam is the impressive Market Hall (Markt), a huge office complex that opened in 2014.

Nicknamed "Koopboog" (Horseshoe) by locals, it's an architectural marvel, with the soaring arched ceiling of its food hall covered in larger-than-life murals of vegetables, fish, and other produce, celebrating the fact the market itself is a kaleidoscope of fresh and prepared foods.

You'll find fast foods of every sort here, along with classy restaurants serving everything from traditional Dutch favorites, like Stroopwafels, to Balkan foods, Spanish tapas, and exotic Indonesian dishes.

Kinderdijk's Windmills

On the River Noord, just 23 kilometers east of Rotterdam, is the beautiful little village of Kinderdijk. Taking its name from a famous legend that describes a baby's cradle being stranded here during the St. Elizabeth's Day flood of 1421 – the name literally translates as "the "children's dyke" – it's one of the most visited places in the Netherlands.

Each of its 19 perfectly preserved 18th-century windmills is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Built between 1722 and 1761, together they comprise the largest surviving concentration of windmills in the country, a history that's celebrated during special Mill Days , when their sails are once again set in motion.

Fun things to do include exploring the museums located in the Blookwer and Nederwaard mills, as well as the Wisdom pumping station. Fun tours along the canals are also available.

Address: Molenkade Nederwaard 1, 2961 AS Kinderdijk

Official site: www.kinderdijk.com

Rotterdam Town Hall

The centerpiece of Coolsingel – nicknamed the city's "Cool" district and the main street of Rotterdam's city center – is the Town Hall (Stadhuis).

Built between 1914 and 1920 in Dutch Renaissance style, it miraculously escaped destruction in the bombing of the city during World War II. While you can't visit the richly decorated interior on your own, guided tours are available and can be booked through the city's tourist office.

Opposite the Town Hall, in the busy Stadhuisplein, is a war memorial designed by Mari Andriessen. Other Coolsingel highlights include the Beurs-World Trade Center , a high-rise building with a facade of greenish-blue glass, and the Bijenkorf ("Beehive") department store, designed by leading architect Marcel Breuer in 1958. Fronting Bijenkorf is the 26-meter-high work of sculpture, Construction (1957), by Naum Gabo, a French sculptor of Russian origin.

The popular shopping streets of Lijnbaan and Koopgoot are also in this area. A few blocks northwest from Bijenkorf, you'll come to De Doelen , a concert hall and congress center rebuilt in 1966 after its destruction in 1940. It offers seating for 2,200 people, excellent acoustics, and a superb roster of concerts. Nearby is Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg , the city's municipal theater, which opened in 1988.

Erasmus Bridge

Rotterdam's massive port occupies half the city's total area of 247 square kilometers, much of it in turn occupied by Europoort, a huge complex known as the "Gateway to Europe." In addition to countless large freight vessels, you'll see mile after mile of quays and storage facilities built to service the world's busiest port.

One of the most popular sightseeing tours of the port area begins at Maeslantkering near Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland) and includes a close-up look at the city's massive surge barrier. Evening tours are also fun, especially with Rotterdam's most famous landmarks, including the superb Erasmus Bridge , being spectacularly illuminated.

Rotterdam Zoo

Established in 1857 and one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands, Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp) is well known for its successful breeding programs. Highlights of this include a number of young elephants, as well as the rare red panda, fascinating creatures to watch as they explore the large enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats.

Natural habitats are, in fact, a priority here: the Asian section includes a swamp forest with two large aviaries for exotic birds, a Mongolian steppe, a bat cave, a Chinese garden, and numerous creatures indigenous to the region.

Also worth exploring is the zoo's Oceanium, an excellent aquarium featuring a large collection of marine life from the Americas. And, if after your visit the kids still have energy to burn, pay a visit to Plaswijckpark . This fun family park features boat and train rides, an adventures playground, plus a petting zoo.

Address: Blijdorplaan 8, 3041 JE Rotterdam

Official site: www.diergaardeblijdorp.nl/en/

The Euromast

One of Rotterdam's most distinctive landmarks, the Euromast lies at the north entrance to the Maas Tunnel. Erected in 1960, this 185-meter-high tower houses two restaurants with superb city views, each at the 92-meter mark.

For thrill seekers looking for more than just great views there's the chance to abseil down the building, while those looking for a unique overnight stay can book one of two stunning suites located at the 100-meter point. English language guided tours are available.

Address: Parkhaven 20, 3016 GM Rotterdam

Official site: www.euromast.nl/en

Delfshaven and the Pilgrims

The old district of Delfshaven, unlike much of the rest of Rotterdam, survived WWII largely unscathed. Consequently, its unspoiled old architecture has resulted in it becoming one of the most popular spots in this big bustling city.

Delfshaven is revered by the Dutch as the birthplace of Admiral Piet Hein, a 16th-century hero of the country's long war against Spain. For Americans, it's notable for the Old Church (Oude Kerk), where the last service was held in 1620 by the Pilgrims before sailing for the New World to found Plymouth, Massachusetts. This is commemorated with a memorial and bronze tablet.

Kunsthal Rotterdam

Another example of the city's modern-yet-functional architecture is the Rotterdam Kunsthal, or Art Hall. This trendy gallery opened in 1992 and hosts a variety of constantly changing exhibits of visual arts, design, architecture, and culture from across the globe.

Another gallery of note is the Chabot Museum , which features the works of Dutch painter and sculptor Henk Chabot. It's housed in a superb white villa built in 1938.

Those with an interest in photography should plan on visiting the Netherlands Photo Museum (Nederlands Fotomuseum). Highlights include a broad collection of historical images by a number of Dutch photographers.

Address: Museumpark, Westzeedijk 341, 3015 AA Rotterdam

Official site: www.kunsthal.nl/

Miniworld Rotterdam

Miniworld Rotterdam is one of the newest tourist attractions in the Netherlands – and one of the best for kids. Set in a large warehouse and covering an area of over 535 square meters, Miniworld recreates many of the most recognizable landmarks and places to visit in the Netherlands on a miniature scale.

Crisscrossing these displays is a 2.3-kilometer-long network of model rail tracks, with some 150 trains buzzing around at any one time, between them pulling an impressive collection of over 1,800 pieces of rolling stock. Close to half the exhibit features parts of Rotterdam, allowing the little ones in your party to recognize some of the many attractions they may already have visited.

If you've got the time, book a fun behind-the-scenes tour. Along the way, you'll visit the Miniworld workshop and learn how the trains are controlled from the command center, including how the whole display is lit up when night falls – an event that happens every 25 minutes in Miniworld Rotterdam.

Museum Rotterdam

Museum Rotterdam is one of the best places to visit for those wanting to learn more about the history of this fascinating port city. Established in the 1950s, the museum displays a rich collection of documents and artifacts, including artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of these, the most important works are by Dutch painter Pieter de Hooch.

More recent history is also featured at the museum's Coolhaven annex. Markiezenhof Palace

Many pleasant excursions await within an easy commute of Rotterdam. One of the most popular places to visit is Bergen op Zoom , a historic old town some 67 kilometers south that is noted for its large squares and pleasant pedestrian zones. It's also where you'll find Markiezenhof Palace , a 15th-century mansion that now houses a cultural center and museum with numerous fine paintings and period furniture.

Also worth a visit are Breda , 52 kilometers southeast of Rotterdam, with its museums and monuments, and the town of Gorinchem , 44 kilometers to the east. Another must-see is the Witches Weigh House (Museum de Waag) in Oudewater, famous for once having been used to weigh those suspected of witchcraft. If you were considered light enough to ride a broomstick, the theory was that you were a witch (fortunately for the women of Oudewater, none of the accused were considered light enough to be punished).

About 70 kilometers from Rotterdam, Zierikzee on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland lures tourists with its yacht harbor, a picturesque old town center, and beautiful beaches fringed by wooded dunes.

Schoonhoven

Situated halfway between Rotterdam and Utrecht, and just an hour away by train, Schoonhoven is a good day's excursion for its superbly preserved medieval buildings. St. Bartholomeuskerk , founded in the 13th century and notable for its tendency to lean off the vertical, has stalls carved with scenes from the life of Christ. Look out for the 17th-century pulpit with its figures of the 12 Apostles, and the tomb of Olivier van Noort, the first Dutchman to circumnavigate the globe in the early 1600s.

The Schoonhoven Town Hall (Stadhuis), built in 1452 in Late Gothic style but much altered in later centuries, has a domed hexagonal tower containing a carillon of 50 bells.

Other town highlights include the picturesque Weigh House (Waag) from 1617 on top of a dam above the harbor; and the Edelambachtshuis , a granary built in 1566 that now houses a collection of jewelry from the 1600s to the 1900s.

If you're visiting Rotterdam for the first time and want to see some of the city's top sights, the best area to stay is in the city center. Everything you need to know about coffeeshops in Rotterdam

We Dutchies are quite unique compared to many other countries. A coffeeshop has another meaning for us besides a place serving a nice cup of coffee. Thanks to the tolerance policy in the Netherlands, you can buy weed and hashish in these special shops. But how exactly does that work? And where do you find these shops? Below we explain a few things about the coffeeshops in Rotterdam so that you are well informed before your visit.

Were you actually looking for a nice place to have a cup of coffee? Then check out our article with the best coffee places in Rotterdam .

Buying weed in Rotterdam: how does it work?

Amsterdam may be known as the capital of weed, but as a large city, Rotterdam also has a few things to offer when it comes to coffeeshops. You will find the shops scattered throughout the city where you can buy it to take with you, or you can take a seat in the coffeeshop and smoke it there. In most coffeeshops you will find a menu with their product range on it. Think of pre-rolled joints, space cakes and of course weed or hashish. It is often indicated what type of weed or what type of taste it has and an indication of its strength. For example you come across names like Haze, Orange Bud, Amnesia Haze, Bubble Gum and White Widow. Keep in mind, however, that the same type of product may have been given a different name in another coffeeshop; it is therefore not as clear as it seems.

Prices at coffeeshops in Rotterdam

You pay per gram for the weed or hash. Depending on the type of weed or hash you buy, you pay around 10 euros. Converted, a joint will therefore cost around € 2. If you are not familiar with rolling your own joint, buy one that has been pre-rolled. You pay around € 3 for this. Stronger types of weed are often just a little more expensive than less strong ones.

Regulations at coffeeshops in Rotterdam

  • In the Netherlands you must be at least 18 years old to buy or consume weed. You must also be at least 18 to be allowed to enter a coffeeshop.
  • Hard drugs or alcohol is not sold in the coffeeshops
  • The sale of large quantities is prohibited in coffeeshops in Rotterdam. You may therefore not buy more than 5 grams per day.

Where can I use it?

A ban on smoking weed on the street applies in Rotterdam. It may be accepted as long as there is no nuisance, however, the fine is € 90. So if you want to be sure, just take the joint home!

15 Best Things to Do in Rotterdam (The Netherlands)

Rotterdam is located in the southern Netherlands and is the second largest city in the country after the capital Amsterdam with a population of approximately 630,000. Rotterdam has been a major city for many hundreds of years and has always served as a large port as it lies on the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt river delta.

Since the 1300’s the port of Rotterdam has developed and served as a major port of the Dutch East India Company. During WWII Rotterdam saw extensive bombing and its centre was almost completely destroyed, however after this the city was slowly rebuilt and once again stands as a modern port.

Aside from its fascinating port, Rotterdam also features some fantastic architecture like the modern cube buildings and the Euromast Tower, but also has a wonderful variety of museums, eateries and activities to enjoy.

1. Markthal Rotterdam

Markthal Rotterdam

The Markthal is a stunning piece of architecture that was constructed in 2009 and serves as both an office building and a marketplace. The design of the structure is quite unique with a large semi-circular grey façade and a large windowed section facing out to the surrounding courtyard. The inside of the structure has some amazing artwork by Arno Coenen and shows various colourful fruits, plants, insects and flowers.

The market section of the Markthal contains a huge array of shops, stalls, restaurants and bars such as a Tea bar, a tapas bar, a “world of drinks” shop and over 70 other different businesses. It really is a cool and vibrant place to explore and sample some find food and drink.

Also known as the Diergaarde Blijdorp, the Rotterdam Zoo had stood for many years despite having to change locations during WWII to avoid bombing. The zoo is split into several different themed areas including a Chinese garden, a Malayan Forest, Mongolian Steppes and a crocodile river. Animals include the Black Rhino, Greater Kudu, Sumatran Tiger, Asian Elephant and the Amur Leopard. This is the perfect way to see the sprawling expanse of Rotterdam and its ports and the entrance fee is quite modest for both adults and children. If you are looking for a little adrenaline action you can even zip-line or abseil from the tower.

4. Erasmus Bridge

Erasmus Bridge

This monumental bridge spans the Nieuwe Maas distributary of the Rhine and runs from the confluence of the Noord and Lek rivers. The length of this impressive bridge stretches to an immense 802m making it the second largest in the Netherlands. The bridge is nicknamed the Swan due to its large upright mast that resembles the neck of a swan.

In the centre of the bridge there is a bascule section that opens to allow larger ships passage through the waters. This feat of modern engineering creates an impressive backdrop to the port of Rotterdam and is a fine construction to admire and walk across.

5. Rotterdam Central Station

Rotterdam Central Station

Rotterdam is a city that is full of modern and unique architecture and the central station is one such building. The new terminal was opened in 2014 and its architecture has become quite iconic. The building has a triangular shape that points towards the sky at a protruding angle.

The clock and the large letters that are set in the station entrance were transferred from the old station to retain some of its memory. The station connects to many other destinations in the Netherlands including Amsterdam, Den Haag, Groningen and Tilburg and sees 100,000+ passengers come through its doors on a daily basis.

6. Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

Around 20km to the east of central Rotterdam lies the small village of Kinderdjik which is a charming place to visit in its own right.

What makes this village an especially magical place however is the many windmills that line the canals here.

The 19 windmills stand proudly and have been restored to their original condition and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This truly is a delightful place to visit and the surrounding countryside and network of canals is extremely impressive.

14. The Witte Huis

Witte Huis

This wonderful building is one of the only buildings to survive the Blitzkrieg in WWII in central Rotterdam and stands proudly as a reminder of the cities heritage and history.

The striking Art Nouveau style of this building, make it easily recognisable and the white façade, ornate turrets and decorative roof give it great character.

The beautiful design of this building and its extensive history have made it a National Heritage Site and was the first high-rise building in Europe.

15. Cube House Rotterdam

Cube House Rotterdam

The cube house is as you would expect – A set of houses that are cuboid fashion.

This bizarre and eccentric housing block was designed by Piet Blom and the cubes that it is formed from are tilted at a 45 degree angle.

The cubes are like no other type of house you will see and they really are an interesting concept; it makes you wonder how the people living here cope with the strange angles of the walls and windows.

From afar the structure looks like some old 2D computer game and one of the cubes is open to the public so you can see what the interior is like.

Due to its central location close to the Eendrachtsplein metro station, prices are slightly higher at The 4 Floors than at some other coffeeshops in Rotterdam.
