Along Zamora Sts. where Asia Stars Hotel and OTHER Hotels are located. Landmark in the Street corner is Mcdonalds in front is Jollibee, Zamora street is flooded by Binagol and choco suman also great tasting Restaurants and Ihaw ihaw Rice Puso combo in the street during nights.

15 Best Things to Do in Tacloban (the Philippines)

At a glance, you wouldn’t believe that Tacloban was once a ‘ground zero’ for one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the Philippines. Back in 2013, typhoon Yolanda ripped through the city of Tacloban, leveling neighborhoods full of infrastructure and destroying plenty of historical monuments. But in proper Filipino fashion, the community banded together to rebuild their city.

Today, you can visit Tacloban in all its glory. Historical monuments have been restored, restaurants and bars have been rebuilt, and a sense of community has been strengthened. You could say that Tacloban is more tourist-friendly after the rebuild than it was before with a modern makeover and the addition of more entertainment. This is certainly the silver lining.

Tacloban has always been a jumping off point for the islands of Samar and Leyte, but now, it is certainly worth it to schedule in a few days to visit, explore, and learn about the heroic story of this Philippine city.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Tacloban :

1. Kanhuraw Hill

Home of the City Hall of Tacloban, Kanhuraw Hill has a lot to offer on a lazy day in Tacloban. Facing Kankabato Bay with grassy nooks and shady trees, come have a rest on Kanhuraw Hill where you can watch joggers out on their daily run, couples having a picnic, and the occasional skateboarding shredding the pavement. This is very much the center of the town, used as a gathering spot for locals from every walk of life. Come and observe!

Around Christmas time, the local government erects a bright Christmas tree as tall as you can see with a different theme every year. It’s a selfie-lovers paradise.

2. Madonna of Japan

Right in front of Magsaysay Boulevard and Cancabato Bay, you’ll find the park home to Madonna of Japan. 33 years after World War II, Japan gifted Tacloban this precious monument in order to honor the friendship between the Filipinos and the Japanese. The statue itself is a beautiful piece of art which almost looks like a female version of the Indian Buddha.

Have a seat in the park and ponder the intricate history of Tacloban, or have a quick look at the monument and go right back to people watching! This is said to be the spot where young couple come to kanoodle. Additionally, from Madonna’s seat, you can get some magnificent views from the water.

3. Ocho Seafood Grill

It’s said that if you want the best Filipino seafood dishes in all of Tacloban, Ocho Seafood Grill is where to find them. Located in the center of town on Senator Enage Street, this restaurant serves a revolving door of locals and tourists on a daily basis.

All the dishes are served family style so don’t be shy- order a full spread to share. The seaweed salad is a staple, the sarad adobo is not to be overlooked, and the fish sinigang is to die for.

Not to mention, they got a vast collection of wine artfully displayed on the wall. It’s too tempting not to order a bottle!

4. Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park

Right across the river from Tacloban is a national park that rivals all others in this beautiful country. With over 841-hectares of protected lands, Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park offers both leisurely and extreme activities for you to take part it including rivers kayaking and trekking.

However, the star of Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park are the caves! These cathedral-style underground caves are absolutely massive! There are strange rock formations that look like alien pods, creepy spikes sticking down from the ceiling, and of course bats hanging out in dark crevasses.

You guide will take you through the caves while pointing out interesting formations and answering all your burning questions. Go there now!

5. Ride a Habal-Habal

You’ve probably ridden in a tuk tuk, a Jeepney, and a tricyle- but have you ever ridden in a habal-habal?

A habal-habal is a form of transport used in the Tacloban region and is basically a motorbike with wide seats and a roof. You’ll squish on the habal-habal in a single-file seating arrangement which comfortably fits 3- although never underestimate the bounds pushed by young Filipino kids.

You’ll often see habal-habals in the countryside as they are best for navigating bumpy roads and steep inclines.

6. Go on a River Cruise

Hire a local boat captain at the Sohoton Natural Bridge Natural Park to show you what these water canals have to offer.

As you go down the river you’ll pass incredible scenery including the limestone cliffs that have developed small caves via water erosion.

On your trip down the river, you’re also likely to pass some local kids playing in the water or some fishermen out doing their daily chores. There will be a dock that leads to the caves where local musicians are playing Waray-waray songs with tunes echoing off the cliff walls.

7. Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum

The shrine and heritage museum feels like a grand ballroom from centuries ago. With extravagant carpets, lavish chandeliers, and an exterior reminiscent of a southern plantation, it’s clear that there was some serious money circulating here.

No surprisingly, Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum used to be the vacation home of the Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife. This museum, with it’s overstated mahogany tables and intricate ceiling mosaic, was used as a venue for state dinners and gatherings by the country’s most elite.

This museum is an insane look into the life of the “haves” and “have-nots” in the Philippines with a president living such an excessive life while his people struggled for food.

8. Burgos Street

Typhoon may have gotten the best of Burgos Street back in 2013, but today, Burgos Street is in full swing! All along the stretch, you can find restaurants offering both western and Filipino food, bars with cold beers, and places to party until late.

On the flip side, Burgos Street provides a calmer atmosphere for those who seek it during the day. There are family-owned guesthouses, teahouses, and coffee shops that are great for killing a few hours (especially after a wicked hangover).

9. Rizal Avenue BBQ Stalls

Take yourself on a food tour up and down Rizal Ave. There, each vendor specializes in just a handful of dishes where they are the true masters of their food domain.

You’ll find lots of grills with sticks of meat. Some chicken, some pork, and some the ever-so-popular Tacloban Longaniza which is the Filipino version of a Spanish sausage!

One of the most popular BBQ stands on this food strip is Baldevia Siblings’s Barbecue. There’s often a small line of people here who just can’t shake the craving for the secretly marinade chicken.

Food is cheap, hot, and ready to eat!

10. Pintados and Sangyaw Festivals

The Pintados festival celebrates the brave Waray warriors with locals dressing up in indigenous costumes and colorful face paint and dancing traditional dances for the whole city to see. There are even staged warrior fights by men covered in ceremonious tattoos.

In Waray, “sangyaw” means to “herald the news”. This festival, held day before the city festival, helps ring in the festivities and get everyone raring to go.

Both of these festivals put you in touch with Tacloban, its people, its culture and its history in a way that others don’t often get to experience.

11. M/V Eva Jocelyn Shrine

In 2013, typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) devastated the region of Tacloban. Recorded as the deadliest typhoon to ever hit the Philippines, Haiyan killed an estimated 6,300 people. There is a famous photo which shows a demolished neighborhood with the only recognizable object being this red, white, and blue ship.

Today, the M/M Eva Jocelyn Shrine stands as a symbol of resiliency and pays tribute to all of those who lost their lives. The same red, white, and blue ship is a symbol of remembrance and memorial.

12. Zpa Spa

After a few days of site seeing, trekking, and buses, your body is probably one big pretzel. Untwist your muscles at Zpa spa. This spa is a popular destination in the city with an amazing reputation for providing top notch services.

There is a sauna, a steam room, massage chairs, and of course, massage therapists who work wonders! The setting is very professional and relaxing with private rooms, aroma therapy candles, cozy massage tables, and calming music.

13. Try Chocolate Moron and Binagol

A staple treat in Tacloban is chocolate moron and binagol. These beloved rice-made sweets are homemade and sold up and down the streets of the city.

Moron is rice that has been cook and simmered in coconut milk, then mixed with a touch of cocoa powder. Binagol is made from the root crop called Talyan (kind of like taro), which is crushed and mixed with coconut milk, condensed milk and sugar and then cooked like a cake, steamed in a coconut shell and wrapped in a banana leaf.

You can almost taste the love!

14. MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

A stunning portrayal of the moment General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf, the leaders of the American forces, landed on the coast to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation. The memorial can be found near the center of Leyte Island, shared with Tacloban.

The memorial itself is both breathtaking and emotional- even if you aren’t a huge history buff. There is are informational markers in both English and Filipino to give you the full story and all the details, including a copy of General Douglas MacArthur’s speech that was given upon landing.

15. Tulaan Falls

You didn’t think this list was going to finish without a waterfall shout out, did you?

Of course there is a magnificent waterfall in Tacloban to be explored! Take a day trip down to Babatngnon where Tulaan Falls awaits! You’ll make your way through a laidback forest path surrounded by hundred-year-old trees, toppled logs, and wild ferns. You’ll then come across a lazy stream where you can splash about- this is how you know you’re close to the falls!

Follow the path and the sound, and you’ll come to Tulaan Falls. This rocky fall creates a shiny black sheen on the rock it covers, then spills into a natural pool below. Kick your shoes off and jump in! If you are a decent climber, you can try climbing up the rocks to a ledge situated about two meets from the water. It’s a nice place to rest and then do a little cliff diving.

This brief guide to Tacloban City will help you plan your trip. It contains information on what to do, eat, and drink as well as the must-see spots and the best hotels.

The provincial capital of the province of Leyte , Tacloban is highly urbanized and the most populous city in Eastern Visayas .  In 2013, it suffered catastrophic destruction caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Typhoon Haiyan), one of the most powerful tropical cyclones in history.  The typhoon destroyed several structures including houses, business establishments, tourist attractions, and even the airport.

But with the combined efforts of the government, private sectors, and the whole Filipino community, the city has been rebuilt and restored to what it is now.  Most of its tourist attractions still stand up to this day and the city in general has become more attractive to tourists after the disaster.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Tacloban City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Tacloban City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Tacloban City.

1 | Have a quiet moment at Tacloban Church

Catholic devotees would surely love to visit Tacloban Church, also referred to as Sto. Niño Church.  The current church structure built in 1860 was made of adobe and coral stones.  The church, now painted with pure white, has a dome-like ceiling and curved windows and openings.  At the altar is a golden retablo where the image of Sto. Niño is enshrined.  The five-story belfry, also in white, stands proud after surviving the disaster that battered Leyte and its neighboring islands.

2 | Visit the Sto. Niño Shrine and Museum

The 2-storey structure used to be one of the rest houses former President Ferdinand Marcos had built for his wife Imelda who hails from Tacloban.  The lavish structure with extravagant furnishings used to be a venue for many state dinners and gatherings of the biggest people of the country.  It is now under the requisition of the Presidential Commission on Good Governance since 1986.

The structure has 21 bedrooms, a chapel, and a museum which houses several antique and art collections, ivory carvings, gold statues, silver chairs, chandeliers, mirrors, and other valuable pieces gifted by royalties and notable people to the Marcos family. 

3 | Take a picture of San Juanico Bridge

San Juanico Bridge is the Philippines’ second longest bridge spanning a body of seawater.  It measures 2.16 kilometers and connects Samar and Leyte across San Juanico Strait.  You can take pictures while walking along the bridge or cruising San Juanico Strait.

4 | See Kanhuraw Hill and Madonna of Japan

Kanhuraw Hill used to be a campground for Japanese soldiers during World War II.  Presently, a statue of Madonna of Japan, also referred to as Madonna Maria Kanonat, stands on the hill as a symbol of friendship between Japanese and Filipinos.  There is also a stone monument to honor the memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in this battlefield.

Tacloban City Hall is located next to Kanhuraw Hill.

5 | Hike to Tulaan Falls

If you love hiking and waterfalls, you will surely love Tulaan Falls.  It may not be as picturesque as those in Iligan but it is a charming one surrounded by trees and wild ferns.  You have to hike through dense forests and come across a stream to reach the waterfalls.  It has a natural pool where you can take a refreshing dip after the hike.

5 | Try the local delicacies

Tacloban has a lot of delicacies to offer and you should at least try one when exploring the city.  Binagol is the city’s most famous delicacy.  Its main ingredients are glutinous rice, taro pudding, and nuts.  It is placed in a halved coconut shell and covered with banana leaves.  Another delicacy to try is moron, a rice cake made with glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar, and chocolate tablea.  Other delicacies originated from Tacloban are bukayo and suman-latik.

6 | Nearby attractions

Not too far from the heart of the city is the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park.  The memorial site commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur that led to the largest naval battle of World War II.  Samar Island is just a little over 2 kilometers from Tacloban via the San Juanico Bridge.  The island is blessed with beautiful beaches, a massive cave system, waterfalls, and natural parks.

NOTE: The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival occurs annually in Tacloban City every June 27 and Sangyaw Festival, also in Tacloban City, every June 29.

EAT & DRINK

The following is your guide to the flavorful food to enjoy and restaurants to try while in Tacloban City.

1 | Ocho Seafood

The top restaurant on the island, Ocho Seafood Grill is popular for its reasonably-priced tasty seafood dishes.  Customers can choose from the fresh seafood displayed and have it cooked the way they want.  There are also meat options for those who are not too fond of seafood.  Their must-try dishes include fish sinigang, chopsuey, porbidang kangkong, and calamari.

2 | Giuseppe’s Restaurant

Owned by a couple with passion for cooking, Giuseppe’s Restaurant serves Italian cuisine and is well-loved for its pizza, grilled salmon, and steak.  The price is not cheap for local standards but considering the food, great ambience, and friendly staff, Giuseppe’s Restaurant sure does provide a satisfying dining experience.

3 | Jose Karlos

Located just across Sto. Niño Church, Jose Carlos is a cozy little cafe great for hanging out with friends and family over a slice of cake or coffee.  The prices are reasonable and it is one of the best places in the city to enjoy free wifi. 

4 | The Q Kitchen

The Q Kitchen of XYZ Hotel serves Filipino, American, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai cuisines.  Customers rave about their tasty foods on top of great service, nice ambience, and good location.  Their must-try dishes include pad thai, spare ribs, and baby back ribs.  They have generous serving and prices are reasonable therefore a good dining experience be it with family or friends.

5 | Dream Cafe

Dream Cafe serves western favorites including burger, pizza, and steak as well as local dishes such as bulalo and sisig.  Claimed as the best restaurant in Tacloban by reviewers, Dream Cafe is reasonably priced and provides excellent service on top of serving good quality foods.  The restaurant also offers a wide selection of drinks including cocktails , spirits, whiskeys, and wine.

6 | Fahrenheit Food Center

For affordable meals in the city, Fahrenheit Food Center is the best spot to go to.  It offers a variety of Filipino dishes as well as favorites such as burgers and pasta.  Customers rave about their cheeseburger, beef caldereta, and crunchy chicken.  Fahrenheit Food Center has three branches in Tacloban City.

7 | Calle Z

For Filipino comfort foods on the island, the best dining spot to consider is Calle Z Cafe.  Conveniently located in the heart of the city, the restaurant is a part of an old house which survived the devastating typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).  The restaurant serves good foods with affordable prices.  Some of its must-try dishes include bulalo, crispy tenga, and sizzling bangus sisig.

8 | Sunzibar

Sunzibar is a Mexican restaurant serving tasty fusion dishes.  It is best known for its Sunzibar Rum Ribs with meat so tender it falls off the bone, as their menu says.  The restaurant also serves good nacho chips, nacho salad, and pasta.

9 | FyZz Gastropub

Located on the 9th floor of XYZ Hotel, FyZz Gastropub serves Japanese food and an impressive selection of drinks including imported liquors.  The restaurant has a nice ambience with a rustic feel and offers a great view of Tacloban City.  The price is a bit high for local standards but it is justified considering the wonderful dining experience the restaurant provides.

10 | The Little Green Kitchen’s Village Chefs

Want to try Asian dishes with a twist? Head to Little Green Kitchen’s where you can try sinigang with watermelon and crispy kangkong salad among others.  The restaurant has a cozy ambience perfect for romantic date nights.

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. Health & Safety

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Tacloban City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

How to get to tacloban.

Direct Flights from Manila,Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and more are being served to Tacloban. Flights are operated by Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and AirAsia.

✓ ENTRY POINT MANILA (NAIA) or CEBU (MCIA) or DAVAO

• By Airplane (Cebu pacific, Airasia and Philippine Airlines)

Manila to Tacloban.

✓ ENTRY POINT CEBU (Pier 3)

• By Boat (Roble Shipping Lines)

From Cebu, ride the Roble Shipping lines boat at Pier 3 to Naval, Biliran. Roble Shipping Lines serves the route 6x a week and at 7:30pm. Travel Time is around 6 hours. Fare is about PHP 660.00 per person.

At Naval, Biliran ride a Van (van-vans, Duptors or Grandtours) to Tacloban. The trip will take approximately two hours and a half. Fare is PHP 120.00 per person .

• By Fast Craft or Fast Boat (2GO, Oceanjet or Weesam)

From Cebu, ride any of the three boats at Pier 1 to Ormoc City, Leyte. The three fast crafts serve the route daily. Travel Time is around 3 hours. Fare is PHP 110000.00 per person.

At Ormoc City, ride a tricycle to Robinsons near Simangan. Note: make sure to point out that you will be riding a van because there are 2 Robinsons in Ormoc. Fare for the tricycle is PHP 8.00 per person.

At Robinsons Ormoc Van Terminal, ride a Van to Tacloban. Travel Time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fare is PHP 130.00 per person.

Macarthur Memorial Park is a must-visit historical place when one is in Tacloban City.

One of the most poignant moments of World War II was the evacuation of Gen. Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor in Manila Bay. At his departure, he famously promised “I Shall Return”

This park marks the spot where MacArthur and Philippine President Omesna came ashore when the invasion to retake the Philippines from the Japanese began on October 20, 1944.

A site where Gen. Douglas McArthur landed on October 20, 1944, to liberate the Philippines from Japanese forces.

The statues are placed at the center of the park. They were medium-sized ones. You really can’t take photos near it because it is surrounded by water and is prohibited.

Tacloban City  – The San Juanico Bridge connecting the provinces of Samar and Leyte is one of the monumental projects under Former President Ferdinand Marcos’ administration. The bridge is an arch-shaped truss bridge,

It is known to be the longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of seawater with a length of 2.162 kilometers (1.34 mi) and a width of 10.620 meters supported by 43 spans.

Pretty much all of the students in Leyte experienced being toured in the city of Tacloban during one of the school tours.

I remembered that our bus drop us off at the middle span of the bridge for us to take some pictures. Then, they just picked it up at the same spot where they drop us off.

Balay ni Tatay Farm Resort is located in Villa Magsaysay, Babatngon, Leyte. It is surrounded by mountains and lush greenery which is really a good stress reliever and a break from city life.

As we entered the resort, we were greeted by staff who told us to pay for the entrance.

He informed us not to lose the ticket and that if we want to avail of the activities, we need to pay inside the resort. There will be a staff that will handle the payment inside.

At first, we saw their Japanese vibe huts with mini fish ponds. Then, we saw the road that leads to the attractions. We hurriedly stopped by staff who told us to park before and pay before going to the attractions.

At first, you’ll see this is just an ordinary shrine – full of religious articles, but no, this is actually the home of the Romualdez.

The 2-storey structure is under the requisition of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) since 1986.

The property was one of the 20 presidential rest houses that were built by the late former President Ferdinand Marcos for his wife Imelda Romualdez Marcos, a Taclobanon.

In 1979, a religious landmark was built in honor of the Holy Child. The shrine highlights the Sto. Niño image, the patron of Tacloban City.

It serves as a chapel and museum at the same time a guest house with 21 bedrooms. Each room has its own unique motif showcasing Filipino artistry and creativeness with a blend of Asian and European fixtures.

• Address: Located along the Palo West Bypass Road in Pawing village, Tacloban

The Leyte Provincial Capitol, built under American occupation, saw numerous significant events in Philippine history. It withstood destruction from the Japanese-American War, storm surges from super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, and a 6.4 earthquake just months ago while serving as the province capital from 1924 until recently. As a result, the current Leyte administration is seeking to turn the Capitol into a museum and construct a new one in Palo out of concern about public safety.

As a symbol of peace between the Filipinos and Japanese people 33 years after world war II, this monument of the Madonna of Japan is erected in memory of the brave soldiers who fought and died on this battlefield.

1. santo niño shrine and heritage museum.

The Santo Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum is one of the 20 presidential rest houses constructed by late former President Ferdinand Marcos for his wife Imelda, who was from Tacloban. The exquisite building served as a chapel, museum, and guest house with 21 rooms.

In 1979, a religious monument was erected in honor of Sto. Niño, Tacloban City’s patron saint and subsequently taken over by the Presidential Commission on Good Government in 1986. It is said, though, that Imelda only stayed in the home once. It is now well-known among tourists owing to its connection with the Marcos family.

2. San Juanico Bridge

The San Juanico Bridge is part of the Pan-Philippine Highway and connects Samar to Leyte in the Philippines. Its longest length is a steel girder viaduct over reinforced concrete piers, and its main span is an arch-shaped truss design. It was built under the Marcos administration and has a length of 2.16 kilometers —the Philippines’ second-longest bridge spanning a body of sea water.

The Tacloban Bridge is one of the Philippines’ most-visited attractions, according to the national government. The San Juanico Bridge is a key link between Samar and Leyte Islands, connecting them economically and tourism-wise.

3. Price Mansion

The Price Mansion is an example of a nineteenth-century American colonial home constructed in the Philippines. It was General Douglas MacArthur’s official home and headquarters during the Liberation of the Philippines era in 1944. The structure previously served as the residence of Walter Scott Price, his wife Simeona Kalingag, and their children. It has now been renamed as the CAP Building, which is located on Romualdez Street near Supreme Court.

4. Leyte Provincial Capitol

The Leyte Provincial Capitol , which was erected in 1907, is a neoclassical structure. The “Kapitolyo,” the seat of the provincial government of Leyte, is located at the junction of Sen. Enage Street and Magsaysay Boulevard. The Philippine Commonwealth Government’s legislative chamber was also here during President Sergio Osmeña’s arrival with WWII Liberation Forces in 1944. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan damaged the Capitol.

5. MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

The MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park , also known as the Leyte Landing Memorial Park and MacArthur Park, is a protected area of the Philippines that remembers General Douglas MacArthur’s historic landing in the Leyte Gulf during the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation in 1944.

The park’s most distinguishing feature is the enormous bronze statues, which are twice the size of a regular person. There are seven bronze sculptures depicting the people who led the historic walk onto the beach that day. Two of the persons depicted by the statues are General Douglas MacArthur and then Philippine president in exile, Sergio Osmena.

The war memorial is located in the municipality of Palo on Leyte island in Eastern Visayas and is one of the region’s major tourist attractions.

6. M/V Eva Jocelyn Memorial

The name “ M/V Eva Jocelyn ” refers to a ship that was wrecked in the coastal barangay of Anibong during Yolanda and wiped out numerous homes, killing many individuals. The monument is dedicated to storm victims.

“On November 8, 2013 at 7 a.m. M/V Eva Jocelyn, which was anchored in the city harbor, ran aground and killed residents of Barangay Anibong. It was pushed by a 7-meter high storm surge caused by winds in excess of 370km/h brought by Super Typhoon Yolanda,” read the marker on the memorial.

It never left its spot, as the city government turned the bow of the ship into a tourist attraction.

7. Korean Veteran Memorial Park

The Korean Veteran Memorial Park is located near McArthur park, at the junction. The Koreans were given the land for their involvement in Yolanda and subsequently erected a memorial in honor of Filipinos who assisted them during the Korean War. The park is architecturally beautiful with some fascinating exhibits and statues. It’s worth seeing.

8. Paruparong Bukid Nature and Conservation Center

The Paruparong Bukid Nature Conservation Center is a great place to go if you’re looking for a quieter and more colorful butterfly experience in Leyte. It’s where nature lovers and people of all ages get caught up in the wonders of insects and other wildlife. The conservation center is located in Barangay Lukay, Babatngon, Leyte, about 30 minutes or 30 kilometers from Tacloban City.

9. Madonna of Japan

The Madonna of Japan is a monument that symbolizes the close friendship between the Japanese and Filipinos. It can be found on Kanhuraw Hill, facing Kankabato Bay, near City Hall. During World War II, it became a campground for Japanese soldiers.

10. Santo Niño de Tacloban Church

The Santo Niño Parish in Tacloban City is a notable historical structure in the city. The image, it is claimed, halted an epidemic in the area in the 19th century and has since been housed at this church. It was handed over to the Archdiocese of Palo in 1990. During the recent coronavirus pandemic, it has been designated as an archdiocesan shrine.

To get from Manila to Tacloban, you can book a flight from airlines like AirAsia, Philippine Airlines, and Cebu Pacific.

The flight takes about 1-hour, 30 minutes from Manila and 1 hour from Cebu.

Direct flight tickets from Manila can range from PHP1950 to PHP3060. However, if you're unable to get direct flights from Manila to Tacloban, be prepared to pay up to PHP8700 and a travel time as long as 26 hours.

Madonna of Japan

Located right in front of Magsaysay Boulevard and Cancabato Bay, the statue is known as the ‘Madonna of Japan’ stands majestically as a testament of a friendship and peace between the Filipinos and Japanese.

A gift from Japan 33 years after World War II ended, the statue of a female version of the Indian Buddha is now a major attraction in Tacloban.

The monument was built in honour of all the soldiers that lost their lives in war. It is also referred to as the Icon of the Goddess of Peace.

The statue stands on a rock amidst a landscaped garden, tall trees and flowering plants can be seen within the park, along with concrete benches where one can sit, pray and reflect.

Visitors to the park can take a moment to ponder the intricate history of Tacloban or simply relax in the serenity of the park. Additionally, from Madonna’s seat, you can get some magnificent views of the water.

Sohoton Caves & Natural Bridge National Park

Right across the river from Tacloban, around an hour’s journey away, is a national park that rivals all others in this beautiful country.

The Natural Park is situated on the island of Samar in the Eastern Visayas and can be accessed easily from Tacloban city.

The main attraction of Sohoton Caves & Natural Bridge Natural Park is the caves. These cathedral-style underground caves are absolutely massive!

The cave has a high cathedral-like dome with an entrance of a parabolic arch.

Within the caves are strange rock formations that look like alien pods, creepy spikes sticking down from the ceiling, and of course, bats hanging out in dark crevasses.

Besides picture-taking of the caves and mysterious rock formations, activities here include river cruising and kayaking.
