If you are fond of Waterfalls, then you must keep Bee Falls, Apsara Vihar Falls and Silver falls in your Pachmarhi itinerary. Silver Falls, aka Rajat Prapat, is falling from a height of 350 feet and looks like a silver strip when sunlight falls on it, hence is called Silver Falls.

Bee Falls also known as the Jamuna Prapat is the most magnificent waterfall and is just 5 km from the Pachmarhi bus stand. Cascading down from a height of 150 feet, the fall is named as such because from a distance the waterfall sounds like a bee as the water flows through the rocks and makes a buzzing sound.

Just One For The Road

Marrakech – The Red City

Best emerging travel blog 2024 – uk, hotel news from la gomera, mykonos: picture perfect but pricey, pachmarhi travel guide, india.

Shreya Patel

This Pachmarhi Travel Guide is from guest author Shreya Patel. Here is what she had to say about Pachmarhi – a hill station in Madhya Pradesh in the very heart of India :

Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura or Satpura ki Rani (in Hindi ), has an abundance of eye-tempting attractions to explore. Although the place is lesser known, once you visit Pachmarhi, its beauty will leave you in awe.  The good thing is that the government has kept it in the same condition, which means a plethora of unadulterated natural beauty for all travel junkies. Encompassed with lush greenery, rich wildlife, pristine waterfalls and picturesque landscapes, this Central Indian spot offers a high level of tranquillity for those who prefer hill stations over beaches.

So, being a wanderlust Indian myself, I am always keen on exploring those untraversed spots and so my curiosity led me to this beauty. I visited Pachmarhi with my family and booked a local gipsy camp to enjoy the beauty of this place better. We covered several attractions and I must say, the warmth and remarkable aura of Pachmarhi left me awestruck and happy.

In this Pachmarhi Travel Guide, I will be listing all the places you must visit when heading to this beautiful undiscovered part of India.

An Introduction to Pachmarhi

Located at a height of 1607 meters above sea level, Pachmarhi is in the second largest state, Madhya Pradesh. Since it’s the only hill station and the highest point in the state, it serves as a vantage point and is the most visited by locals and tourists across the nation.

The place is also home to wild animals – leopards and bison. The town isn’t very large and is a perfect cosy retreat for tourists from metropolitan cities.

Pachmarhi Travel Guide Facts

Some amazing fun facts I learned about this place are:

Pachmarhi was named a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009.

A lot of cave paintings found in the caves of Pachmarhi are believed to be about 10,000 years old.

Dhoopgarh is the highest peak point of this hill station. During my trip, I visited here during sunset, and I can say that the views from the peak were unmatchable.

The name of this place, Pachmarhi, is derived from the words “Panch (Five) and Marhi (Caves)”.

Many Bollywood movies have been shot in this beautiful location. When I visited Reechgarh, a local guide told me that scenes of the popular movie Ashoka the Great, (starring Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor), were shot here.

Bee Falls Pachmarhi

Amongst the count of waterfalls, the Bee Falls Pachmarhi is the most renowned. Also known as Jamuna Prapat, it offers the most extreme tranquillity one could ask for. The hiking trail, which is a wonderland in itself, leads visitors to this waterfall. Amid the trail, you’ll see 2-3 picturesque spots. Tourists here can be often found pushing and shoving to get a click with the mesmerizing view, especially the first-timers.

People sit and relax by the brooklet, while many dip their feet in the water and enjoy fish offering a very natural and free pedicure. It may be a little exhausting to hike down to the Bee Falls Pachmarhi, but as you arrive, the drizzle from the fall, the soothing sounds of gushing water, and the view will be enough to take away the fatigue.

Jatashankar Caves – A Lord Shiva Temple

The Jatashankar Caves is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage site. It is said to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur. Although it’s a long walk to reach the temple entrance, it’s all worth it. On the way to the entrance, you will come across street sellers selling different items such as pipe fryums, papad, labdo ber, and herbal oil.

Here at the Jatashankar Caves, water seeps from the rock above and flows into the temple’s courtyard, making one’s feet numb. You may come across a lady, who sits on the cliff, and chants mantras of Lord Shiva, and her voice echoes can be heard throughout the entire cave. There is a cave built in the rock, from which you have to stoop to reach and worship before the idol of Lord Shiva.

Jatashankar Caves, India

Bade Mahadev Caves

Sitting in the lap of rugged nature is this Lord Shiva shrine, which goes by the name of the Bade Mahadev Caves. The temple also consists of the idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Ganesha, which are of major significance in the Hindu religion. At the entrance to the cave, there is a lot of Trishuls and Damru, symbolizing the tenacity of Lord Shiva.

Natural water streams inside the cave, which forms a holy pool. It is believed that whoever bathes in this pool, can wash away their sins. Here also, you will have to stoop to get to the end point of the cave, where you will find the idol of Mahadev and all the above-mentioned Gods.

As an extra travel tip for your visit to the Bade Mahadev Caves, beware of the monkeys roaming around, as they can snatch your food and bag.

Bade Mahadev Caves, India

Pandav Gufa Caves

Pandav Caves or Gufa are well renowned and have a reference to Indian mythological characters Pandavas, hence the name. These caves are said to be the place where Pandavas ( 5 sons of Kunti ) stayed during their exile period. It is now a protected tourist spot, and people from all over India visit here to witness this place. Built in the 9th century, these caves are adorned by beautiful sculptures and ancient carvings.

A pathway from a large beautiful garden leads to the Caves.  Here you can see a group of five small caves, covered with grills, and carved on a hilltop. The caves are covered with lush greenery and provide a tranquil aura away from bustling cities.

This was, however, the least interesting place for me in Pachmarhi.

Pandav Gufa, India

Reechgarh is a huge cave hidden in the folds of Pachmarhi. A myth says that a giant bear (reech in Hindi) used to live in this cave, and hence, a local legend gave this place the name Reechgarh. Here you’ll get to see sunshine peeking through craggy rocks, making it a beautiful place to take pictures. The climb above the cave offers vistas of lush greenery and this cave serves as a natural air conditioner since a cool wind blows through them.

However, to enjoy the best views of this place, you will have to hike down through the streak boulders. And, while doing so, you need to be very careful to avoid tripping over.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi and is located at a height of 1352 meters. It serves the most eye-tempting views of the place. It is the best place to admire sunrises and sunsets, and hence, most people come here during these times only. The vistas are truly incredible, and people often enjoy this view with snacks and tea.

However, you can only reach here by trekking up to the peak. The route isn’t easy either. The path passes through certain waterfalls and valleys, therefore making the way as steep and challenging as you can imagine.

For first-time visitors it’s best to visit Dhoopgarp with an experienced Pachmarhi Travel Guide, as the hike can be a little overwhelming.

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, India

Being one of the most beautiful ravines in central India, Handi Koh is a v-shaped ravine covering a 300-foot-deep precipice in the heart of a dense forest. This place has a rich mythological history and is said to be closely linked with Lord Shiva. Although it was said to be a lake earlier, it dried up due to the wrath of a giant snake. Now Handi Koh is well known for hiking, trekking, horse riding, and photography.

Here you will get a view from the cliff of a ravine laden with trees, and greenery. Local people will hand over binoculars and telescopes for a fee. Indigenous people use a rope to get down into the jungle to get herbs for medicinal virtues.

Best Time to Visit Pachmarhi

The best time to visit Pachmarhi is anytime year-round, thanks to its pleasant weather and topography. The days here are pleasant with chilly nights, which makes it a perfect getaway destination. However it would be best to avoid the monsoon (July to September) since the precipitation is quite high in this region.

In my experience, the best time to visit Pachmarhi would be in the summer season (April to June), which is perfect to escape the dry heat of the plains. Not only is it less crowded, but it also tends to be much cooler as compared to other hotter parts of the country. The weather is just as perfect as any hill station encounters. Plus, what’s the best time to enjoy playing around in waterfalls? It’s always the summer.

How to Reach Pachmarhi

Being the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, it’s the most visited and hence is well connected with major cities of the region. Bhopal is one of the nearest cities to reach here (210 km). Those taking a flight from Delhi, Mumbai or any other Indian city, can utilize Raja Bhoj Airport to reach Bhopal and then take a taxi to Pachmarhi (which is a 4-hour drive).

If you’re someone who prefers travelling by train, then a useful Pachmarhi Travel Guide tip is to take a train to reach Pipariya Railway Station, the closest to Pachmarhi (only 54 km). This train station is linked directly with several major stations including Varanasi, Surat, Delhi, Nagpur, Kolkata, etc. When you reach Pipariya, take a taxi to Pachmarhi and you will reach in about an hour.

If you prefer a road trip, then you are most welcome to bring your vehicle. Although driving can be exhausting, you will get to enjoy the stunning vistas as you drive. Remember that the travelling time will depend upon the traffic and whether you make stops in the middle.

For the road route, you can also opt for a bus ride. Yes, several state-owned and private buses are accessible for Pachmarhi from nearby cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, and renowned tourist attractions like Kanha National Park and Pench National Park. Being a cantonment town, the road conditions here are quite phenomenal.

Accommodations in Pachmarhi

It makes sense that being a popular spot amongst the locals and tourists, there are a handful of accommodations accessible in Pachmarhi. From budget stays to chic hotels, there is a suitable option for everyone. That said, budgeted hotels are available for a stay starting from INR 600 to INR 1500. Although these hotels are affordable the quality of stay provided isn’t questionable.

But for me, the budget wasn’t the issue, so I decided to book a lavish hotel. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing view from the balcony, I went for a hotel that offers the same. Fortunately, there are plenty of incredible options nearby Satpura National Park, Dhoopgarh, and Pandav Caves. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing balcony view, I went for a hotel that offers the same.

Final Takeaway

I have always preferred natural beauty over man-made attractions and this place offered it all. And indeed, a trip to a cosy hill station can better rejuvenate your entire soul. Pachmarhi is truly a gem brimming with a myriad of remarkable attractions and offers the most tranquil vistas you could ask for.

The best thing I realized here was that even with an excessive population, such a mesmerizing gift of nature still exists in the country. If you’re in India or ever plan to visit here, then make sure to spend some time exploring the beauty of this hill station.

Not only will this place offer you peace, but will take you a step closer to the tales of Indian mythology. I will also recommend you carry strong grip shoes for rugged trails, sunglasses and a hat to avoid being smothered in dust, as well as some motion sickness tablets.

One of the most fascinating attractions in Pachmarhi, the Pandav Caves are steeped in mythology, believed to have been inhabited by the famous Pandava brothers from the epic of Mahabharata, along with their wife Draupadi during part of the exile.

They are a cluster of 5 sandstone caves, inscribed with several fine carvings. Each cave bears mythological significance and carries the name of the Pandava brothers. Though the sands of time have marked the caves, their striking beauty remains unadulterated. Though fairly popular, the caves remain secluded and remote.

Pay a Visit to Pachmarhi Catholic Church

The kingdom of Pachmarhi brims with the unparalleled beauty of the natural bounties. Besides the widely appreciated splendor of nature that it houses, a handful of beautiful old buildings from the bygone ages are sheltered there.

The great Catholic Church of Pachmarhi is a proof of its structural diversity! Installed in the year 1892, the Church is a stark portrayal of the French and Irish infused architectural style exclusive to the colonial era.

Also housing an ancient cemetery, it carries graves dating back to the World War days. It was so well built, and with such architectural brilliance that there has been no need for renovation to date.

Shaded by the forested beauty, the church preserves much of the old world charm and takes visitors sweeping back in time. It is not only a building of great historical and cultural significance but also an unbeatable work of art.

Go for Waterfall Trekking

Go for Waterfall Trekking

Draped in a blanket of fresh greenery, Pachmarhi is blessed with numerous thrilling waterfalls, the magnificent roar of which can be heard from miles away! Most of this fall demand a short but challenging hike to reach, but the rewarding views coupled with the roaring lullaby of the falls is worth every bit of exertion.

Waterfall trekking is an offbeat, thrilling activity to indulge in, and an experience that is a notch above hiking. A few miles above Apsara Vihar, Rajat Prapat can be reached via a short, steep hike. Perched atop 350 ft., the single streak of water resembles molten silver veiled by forested greenery. It is the 30th highest waterfall in India.

Another such unbeatable spectacle is Bee Falls. The most famous waterfall in Pachmarhi, Bee Falls tumble from a staggering 35 meters and accumulate in a gorge, which is perfect for a dip.

Duchess Falls branches out into 3 streams and is another celebrated hiking destination. Sitting in close proximity to the Pandav Caves, Apsara Falls is one of the few waterfalls in Pachmarhi which have a natural pool. Though it calls for a challenging uphill trek

The engulfing natural beauty and the aura of tranquility may be best experienced on foot, but the thrill of a cycle ride overshadows everything. It is one of the most offbeat, unexplored things to do in Pachmarhi.

Starting from the age-old marvel of Jatashankar caves, dedicated to Lord Shiva, ride past the unforgettable Bee Falls, hitting the rocky gorge from over 35 meters. Your next stop comes at Dhoopgarh, where a stunning panoramic view awaits you.

12 Awesome Places To Visit in Pachmarhi in Two Days

Famously known as the ‘Queen of Satpura’, Pachmarhi sits pretty amid the Satpura range at 1100 m (3608 ft) in Madhya Pradesh. Adorned with gorgeous waterfalls and ancient caves, there are plenty of captivating places to visit in Pachmarhi.

This charming hill station was discovered in 1857 by James Forsyth, a British Army Officer. It once served as the summer capital for the Central Provinces during British rule in India.

Pachmarhi gets its name from the Hindi words ‘Pach’ (five) and ‘Marhi’ (caves). The history of Pachmarhi dates back to the Mahabharata era.

Legend has it that the Pandavas excavated these 5 caves for their shelter when they were passing through Pachmarhi during their fourteen years of exile.

It is listed as Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO for the abundance of flora and fauna in the region.

I decided to explore this hill town towards the end of March which is the beginning of the summer season in many parts of India. But, the weather was pleasantly cold and sunny in the daytime and nights were a bit colder.

If you are looking for that perfect two-day Pachmarhi itinerary, here is the one well-crafted for you. Scroll down to know which are the popular places to visit in Pachmarhi in a two-day trip.

Best Places To Visit in Pachmarhi

The pristine town of Pachmarhi is irresistible with its refreshing weather and stunning landscapes. This well-designed itinerary will help you cover the most prominent attractions of Pachmarhi in two days.

Start your day by visiting Apsara Vihar, if you wish to visit the waterfalls first. Another option is to start with Pandav caves, so you can visit the day 2 attractions on day 1.

1. Apsara Vihar

Apsara in Hindi literally means ‘fairy’. Encircled by hills and verdant forests, true to its name Apsara Vihar feels like a fairyland. You can hire a gypsy from Pachmarhi town to reach here.

A fantastic nature trail through the forests takes you there. From the gypsy drop point, there is around 0.5 km of trekking to go to the Apsara Vihar waterfall.

Plunging down a height of 30 ft, the waterfall forms a shallow pool at the base which is perfect for leisurely swimming. On the same trekking route, I stumbled upon another charming pool known as Panchali Kund.

The entire place is heavenly and the trek was so refreshing that I didn’t feel even a bit tired. Apsara Vihar is indeed one of the most scenic places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Here is an interesting thing about this falls. A few scenes of a famous Bollywood song ‘san sanana…’ from the movie Ashoka were picturized here.

Tip: There are no shops or eateries around in this complete stretch. Remember to carry drinking water, especially if you are traveling with kids.

2. Rajat Prapat

Also known as Silver falls, Rajat Prapat is another breathtaking waterfall cascading down with a single drop from a massive 351 ft height. It is known as the 30th highest waterfall in India.

From Apsara Vihar waterfall, it is almost a km trek to Rajat Prapat. Experience the magnificence of the falls from the opposite side as no one is allowed to go near the base of the falls.

It is a perennial waterfall, so there is always some water even in summer. Come monsoon, the grandeur of the falls grows manifold.

3. Reechgarh

After experiencing the splendour of the Pachmarhi waterfalls, head over to Reachgarh. Locals say that Reechgarh used to be the home of bears long ago. It derives its name from Reech (meaning ‘beer’) and Garh (meaning ‘home’ or ‘abode’).

Reechgarh is a short drive from Apsara Vihar. It involves a few meters of climbing down through a rough and steep pathway. But don’t miss this gem of nature, it is one of the best places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Once you reach there, get rewarded with awe-inspiring views of natural rock formations. This place is believed to have been inhabited by early humans from the stone age. Spend some time exploring this natural wonder.

4. Bee Falls

The majority of tourist attractions in Pachmarhi involve some bit of climbing up and down. Bee falls is no exception and one needs to climb down nearly 400 uneven steps to get there.

Undoubtedly, Bee falls is one of those places to visit in Pachmarhi that will unleash the adventurer in you.

Set against densely wooded forests, this 150 ft high waterfall presents an enchanting picture to the visitors.

The plunge pool at the base is home to numerous tiny fishes. So if you put your feet in the water, they love doing a free pedicure for the guests. 🙂

Tip: You may skip this if you are traveling with kids and senior citizens. It involves an arduous trek to visit this attraction.

5. Pachmarhi Lake

One of the most serene places to visit in Pachmarhi, this picturesque lake lies in the heart of the town. Enjoy a scenic boat ride in the lake or indulge in adventurous water sports, like banana ride and speed boat.

Though the lake is not quite known as sunset point, the picture-perfect background of the lake stands out during sunset.

6. Jata Shankar Caves

The mystical Jata Shankar caves are an important place of worship for the devotees of Lord Shiva. It houses a naturally-formed Shivlingam and a rock structure looking like the hundred-headed snake, known as Sheshnag.

Almost all the caves in Pachmarhi have some mythological stories associated with them. According to legends, it is believed that these caves hid Shiva from a demon named ‘Bhasmasura’.

The caves derive its name from Jata (matted hair) and Shankar (another name of Shiva). Explore different rock-cut structures resembling the matted hair of Shiva. This place is not more than 20 minutes drive from Pandav caves.

7. Pandav Caves

An iconic landmark of Panchmarhi, Pandav Caves are believed to be home to the Pandavas during their days of exile. The five caverns situated on a hillock are named after the five Pandavas brothers.

It is located in the center of the town and is easily accessible by road. You need to climb up through rock-cut stairs to reach the caves. Entry into the caves is not allowed but you can click photographs from outside.

A beautiful garden at the base of the cave enhances the beauty of the surroundings. The panoramic views from the top of the cave will leave you mesmerized.

8. Rajendra Giri

Next, you can visit Rajendra Giri which is roughly 10 minutes drive from the Pandav cave location.

It’s a beautiful botanical garden named after the first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The garden also houses a statue of him.

It offers splendid views of the Satpura range from the hilltop. You will love this place if you admire colourful flowers and plants.

Tip: Though Rajendra Giri is also popular as a sunset point, Dhupgarh sunset is considered one of the best in Pachmarhi. Try visiting Dhupgarh for watching a gorgeous sunset view.

Head over to Handi Khoh next. Set amid the lush green dense forest, Handi Khoh is one of the most popular places to visit in Pachmarhi. It got its name from Handi (pot) as the ravine resembles the shape of a pot.

Handi Khoh is a viewpoint which offers spectacular views of the 300 ft gorge. If you drop a stone in it, you may not hear the dropping sound immediately but only after a few seconds.

10. Bade Mahadev Cave

This 60 ft long cave, known as Bada Mahadev Cave hosts a temple of Lord shiva. As per mythical stories, this cave is the place where Lord Vishnu killed the demon Bhasmasura.

The continuous dropping of water from the cave walls forms a pool, considered as sacred. It is believed that taking a dip in this pool exonerates one from all sins.

11. Gupt Mahadev Cave

Also known as Chhota (small) Mahadev, Gupt Mahadev is a 40 ft long cave situated about a km away from Bada Mahadev cave.

A narrow winding pathway leads to the shrine of Lord Mahadev (Shiva). The small crevices inside the cave make the walk exciting.

You need to literally squeeze yourself to move ahead. For adventure seekers, it is one of the must-visit places in Pachmarhi.

It is placed at a height of 1067 metres and has a divine connection with Lord Shiva the shrines of whom have been located in the caves here. Bison lodge interpretation centre.

The name of Capt Fedrick Forsythe is very significant to Pachmarhi.

Bison Lodge and Interpretation Centre was once his house which is now converted into a museum and depicts life-size models of the flora and fauna.

It also houses various pictures, models, graphs and maps which give an exact impression of the actual animals and birds found here. It has marked its place in history as it is one of the oldest museums in Madhya Pradesh.

Pandav Caves

If you are a history buff and legends interest you, then this is a place for you.

According to a legend, Pandavas came to this place along with their wife, Draupadi. During their exile, they excavated five caves meaning ‘Panch’ in Hindi, for them to lay low and to pass their time in anonymity.

Along the premises of this place is a beautifully done-up garden with all the seasonal flowers and other local flora. The greenery here is a treat to watch.

Pandav Caves are open from 7 am to 7 pm, every day.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi at a height of 1350 metres and the views from here are breathtaking.

People come here for the picturesque views of Sunrise and Sunsets.

At night, the lights of neighbouring towns like Itarsi are visible from here which gives a mesmerising look and is a photographer’s delight. This place looks beautiful all year through however the best season to visit is monsoons as the place gets filled up with soft cottony clouds and engulfs itself in the greens.

It is possible to trek to Dhoopgarh or reach it by vehicle.

Dhoppgarh is open from 8 am to 6 pm, all days of the week.

Jata Shankar Caves

One gets enchanted with the beauty and gets mesmerised by the magnificence of Ja ta Shankar Caves.

In order to reach the caves, there is a flight of steps going into the depth of a ravine between the huge rocks. Moving towards the end of the steps is Trishul of Lord Shiva and naturally formed Lingam.

I have visited caves having a Shiva lingam at Badami Cave Temples which also has beautiful sculptures and carvings.

If you are interested in Geology and are interested in various formations on the surface and beneath the earth, this place is a must-visit as the caves house the stalactites . I have seen stalactites formation in Meghalaya in India and Halong Bay in Vietnam and the formations are breathtaking!

As per the legend, Lord Shiva hid in this place from Bhramasur. One can find two ponds here, which are enriched by seasonal springs, one with cold water and the other with hot water. The structure of this cave resembles Sheshnag which is a Snake god with 1000 heads. This shrine holds great importance for the locals and the people staying around.

Priyadarshini Point/ Forsythe Point

Places to visit in Pachmarhi are all close to nature – green clad mountains, waterfalls and numerous nature trails.

Forsythe Point gets its name as Capt Forsythe first came to this place and discovered Pachmarhi. It’s a beautiful viewpoint with various ranges of hills overlapping each other and clad with soft clouds creating a mist in the area.

Taking a camera to this point is a must. One can reach this point after a trek of about 400 metres and view one of the most exquisite sites in Pachmarhi.

Mahadeo Hills & Gupt Mahadev

Pachmarhi in monsoon is breathtakingly beautiful and serene.

Located at around 10-12 km from the Pachmarhi town, Mahadeo Hills is the northern part of the Satpura range.

These hills are one of the three highest peaks in Pachmarhi and house two ancient temples of Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev. It is 40 feet long and happens to be one of the ancient cave temples in Pachmarhi.

The inner Sanctorum of this temple is very narrow, one has to actually squeeze in to get there and can accommodate only 7-8 people at a time.  This is a place where spirituality and adventure go hand in hand.

Best Places to visit near Pachmarhi

There are two places which cannot be ignored when we talk about Pachmarhi sightseeing. They are Tawa Dam and Satpura National Park in Madhai.

Tawa Dam and Reservoir

Tawa Dam has been constructed on the confluence of two rivers Tawa and Denwa.

Tawa river is a tributary of the Narmada river and Denwa is a tributary of the Tawa river. This dam was constructed keeping in mind the water and hydropower supply to the people of Madhya Pradesh. The confluence is encircled by the Satpura ranges making it extremely panoramic. This reservoir is always full as the rivers that feed it are perennial rivers.

Sunsets viewed from the dam site are loved by tourists and photographers. Adjacent to the dam is a beautiful resort of Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

One can also go for a cruise on the river which is organised by them. While cruising, one can spot marsh crocodiles. Boating and bird watching are other attractions here which keep tourists glued to the property.

Satpura National Park, Madhai

Also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve, it is included in Project Tiger since the year 2000.

It covers both Bori and Pachmarhi National Parks and covers Hoshangabad and Chinnwara districts of Madhya Pradesh.

It is home to various animals like Leopard, Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai, Bear, Black Buck etc. It is also home to various birds and innumerable plant species. One can approach the Park from Madhai which is a part of Satpura Bioreserve.

There is a Madhya Pradesh Tourism resort at the edge of Denwa River in Madhai. Tickets for Jungle Safari can be booked here. The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

Here's what the study discovered.

Takeaways from study on Top 100 most boring tourist sites around the world

According to Solitaired , key takeaways include:

  • Branson Scenic Railway in Branson, Missouri, is the most boring attraction in the world.
  • Museums comprise 33% of the Top 100 most boring attractions.
  • Four LEGOLAND Discovery Centers are in the Top 25 most boring attractions worldwide.
  • Georgia is the most boring state, with many attractions and extensive reviews indicating boredom.
  • The U.S., Canada and Australia hold the top three spots for countries with the most boring tourist attractions. And yes, U.S. was No. 1.

The "boredom score" is on a scale from zero to five.

How did Florida rank as 5th most boring state in US?

"With its 104 boring attractions, Florida might seem like the boredom capital at first glance ," Solitaired said.

"Yet, it only ranks as the fifth most boring state because each attraction garners very few yawns from visitors. Despite many attractions being labeled boring by reviewers, this sentiment is such a minority that Florida only pans out as the fifth most boring state."

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

People Are Sharing The "Not-So-Popular" Vacation Spots That Deserve WAY More Attention, And I'm Already Planning My Summer Vacation

"It's like Paris, only with a small fraction of the crowds..."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

Don't get me wrong, there's a reason why places like Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles are popular tourist destinations. These places have so much to offer visitors. But it's a great big world out there, full of hidden gems and lesser-traveled locales. So, redditor u/Hot-Vegetable3827 asked, "Which not-so-popular country is a must-visit?" Here's what people said, including some members of the BuzzFeed Community.

1. "hydra, greece. my wife and i just took a long greek honeymoon. one island we really liked that isn't as well known as santorini and mykonos was hydra. in fact, it was probably our favorite island. there isn't much to do or see there, but it was very laid back and chill. it was basically a vacation from our vacation, which we needed after a couple of busy days of sightseeing in athens and before we went partying in mykonos. there aren't any cars on the island, only donkeys, and it's very walkable and small.".

3. "Cartagena, Colombia. My wife and I went last year, and we have already planned our next visit. You can get there pretty easily and quickly from the US. There's cheap and delicious street food, friendly people, and nice weather all year round."

"I always recommend Cartagena and the Rosario Islands. The whole week I spent there was cheap and incredible, and the Rosario Islands are on par with any tropical vacation spot but with hardly any tourists and extremely cheap."

— JessicaPage

4. "Slovenia. My wife was born there, and we go back every other year to see her family and friends. It's such a beautiful country. The secret is starting to get out now, especially Instagrammable places like Lake Bled and Predjama Grad. Granted, it's still nowhere near as crowded as similar countries like Croatia."

5. "Tunisia, especially Tunis and Monastir. I absolutely love it there. It's very cheap to visit, and the people are incredibly friendly."

8. "Sri Lanka. Damn, it is beautiful, and this country has it all: beaches, forests, mountains, ancient temples, and wildlife safaris. I loved the food there, including lots of curry. The beach areas offer a lot more culinary variety, like lots of fresh seafood."

9. "Ghent, Belgium is an incredible city. It's vibrant, historic, and fun! I would highly recommend a visit."

10. "Malta. You'll find delicious food (it's sort of a mix of Arabic and Italian influences) and lots of historical places like ancient ruins. The capital, Valletta, is beautiful, and there are also two smaller islands called Gozo and Comino that you can visit. There's also extensive public transport, so it's easy to get around if you don't drive. I can't recommend it enough if you're the sort of person who's into exploring history, food, and culture."

11. "Belfast is underrated, IMO. I wanted to revisit Dublin, but hotel prices are absolutely wild at the moment, so I went to Belfast instead. I found that it was a very interesting city with excellent food, pubs, music, culture, and proximity to the countryside for day trips. Everyone I met in the city was funny and friendly."

12. "Lyon. It’s a two-hour train ride from Paris but with a fraction of the population. It’s like the Florence of France with its walkability and world-class cuisine."

13. "Kazakhstan. Stunning nature and landscapes, a unique cuisine, and friendly people who are really generous to guests. It's also home to some fascinating archaeological sites."

— u/Meorazhar

14. "New Mexico. People who live in the US don't realize how unique and beautiful the landscape is. The drive from Española to Taos is probably one of my favorite in the world. The food really is second to none. Plus, there's a Balloon Fiesta. Enough said."

— rachadach23

15. "I absolutely love Guatemala. If you can speak even a little bit of Spanish, it's even better. Fly in, leave Guatemala City, and make Antigua your base. There's enough to see in Antigua and the surrounding areas that it can be a whole vacation alone, but there are also many places to visit on a day or overnight trip from Antigua."

16. "Bolivia. It has an amazing landscape, it's spotlessly clean, the people are friendly, and there's a lot of fun to be had if you want to party. I haven't been back in ten years, and I hope it's still as lovely. It holds a special place in my heart."

17. "Jordan. Petra is easily the coolest thing I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. Pictures do not do it justice at all. You could fit elephants through the door of the Treasury. It’s wild."

18. "Mongolia. There's really only one big city, Ulan Bator, and one or two days there is enough. But that countryside! It's so beautiful. I went out to a camp where I was set up with a ger (a Mongolian yurt), and you just hang out in the beauty of nature."

19. "Sapporo, Japan. My husband and I went to this city on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, and it was spectacular! When most people think about traveling to Japan, they think of Tokyo, but Sapporo is much less touristy, the mountains around the city are incredibly beautiful, and the food is to die for. A scenic hour-long bus ride takes you to the old city of Otaru, best known for its glass-blowing industry and beautiful canals. The subway system is amazing, and the people are friendly and helpful. I've been to a few places in my travels, but Sapporo stands out as the best so far. We already vowed to go back someday."
