Trackman’s NEXT Golf Tour and the simulator shaking up the sport

In Season 2 of the NEXT Golf Tour players will compete for European Tour starts

In golf’s Westworld players prepare to showcase their X-factor in season two of the NEXT Golf Tour and win the right to compete on the game’s biggest stage.

It’s early April 20023, and as golf’s elite arrived in Georgia for Masters week, the world’s 1499 th ranked golfer was signing off on his 7-under par 64 at Florida’s Innisbrook Copperhead Course.

An impressive round of golf… absolutely, but inconceivable for a player of that ranking… not so much.

More remarkable about Sebastian Wiis’ bogey-free round, just 3 strokes short of Padraig Harington’s course record, was that he managed to do so from 4,500 miles away. Oh, and without requiring a putter!

Welcome to a brave new world, where golf’s grinders are fighting virtually for a shot at the big time and chance to prove their game can flourish on the fairways that host golf’s greatest tournaments.

NEXT Golf Tour players compete on Trackman simulators

Make no mistake, the 994 golfers swinging on the NEXT Golf Tour (NGT) are not swapping Pro V1 caps for VR headsets. This is not the matrix, and only the most competent players will reach the final levels.

This is real skill, real pressure, real consequences, and real cash.

There is nothing artificial about the physical prowess on show here, only the lighting and projections that reimagine your wildest golfing fantasies (steady on).

The NEXT Golf Tour: At A Glance

Ngt season 1 recap.

Emerging blurry-eyed to his friends and family, another Scandi-swinger – Rasmus Rosin, returned to reality following his latest stint in virtual golf land.

His 1-under par 70 was sufficient to claim the inaugural ‘Order of Merit’, following top-five finishes in the first five NGT events which had already guaranteed him the title and $15,000 bonus check before he stepped foot inside the golf center simulator where he works part-time.

It took his total 2023 NGT winnings to $68,340.

The triumph was a ‘dream come true’ for the 22-year-old, who was further rewarded with an invite to play in one of the DP World Tour’s flagship events, the BMW International Open in Munich.

He missed the cut before you ask. But were it not for three dropped shots in the final three holes, the Swede wouldn’t have been far away.

Sweden's Rasmus Rosin competing on the NEXT Golf Tour

Strength in the golf’s player pool is deeper than ever before with chances to stake a claim on the top tours few and far between.

That is why golf’s tentative steps into competitive golf simulation can only be positive, providing a financially viable pathway for talented players to chase their dreams.

The NGT is ‘outside the box’ thinking at its innovative best.

Or at least it would, be it for the unmistakable orange box pulling all the strings.

The thinking here is very much ‘inside the box’ – and for the uninitiated, the box goes by the name of Trackman.

Trackman 4 launch monitor

We spoke to Trackman’s Vice President of Marketing, Bernd Larsen Linde, to explore the vision driving the NGT and why their virtual venture has been described as ‘just the beginning’.

Danish Doppler Trailblazers

Like most good things in golf at the moment, Trackman hails from Scandinavia.

Denmark to be exact, in the small town of Vedbaek, just north of Copenhagen, and is the creation of founder and golf enthusiasts Klaus (CEO) and Morten Eldrup-Jorgensen, and doppler-radar engineer Fredrik Tuxen (CTO).

Trackman’s purpose is to make golf more fun, more engaging, and more efficient to practice, play, and improve, driven by the desire to get better, and limited only by the laws of physics.

From its humble beginnings as a small Danish technology start-up, Trackman’s rise to prominence in the golf world has been extraordinary, today being integral in the data-driven decisions made by players, coaches, equipment manufacturers, and club fitters.

“ There is something special about founder-led companies, says Linde.

“It’s the unwavering commitment to doing the absolute best, not necessarily in the interest of shareholders, but in the interests of the stakeholders we work with.

“We have to not just please our customers but surprise them and delight them.”

Trackman's Klaus Eldrup-Jorgensen (CEO) and Fredrik Tuxen (CTO)

This customer-centric commitment, combined with an ethos of over-investing in technology and expertise is what Linde believes has launched Trackman into their enviable position today as the PGA Tour’s launch monitor of choice.

The little orange box is omnipresent across driving ranges, providing the games’ elite with unrivaled insight into the critical determinants underpinning their performance.

And it’s that almost inconceivably large bank of outdoor shot data that has enabled Trackman to reimagine authentic golf experiences indoors.

“The one thing that keeps us awake at night is how we can make it more real and more accurate, explains Linde.

“We are obsessed. It has to feel real.”

And Trackman’s new landmark agreement with the European Tour group is a clear signal that the simulated golf experience is marrying ‘feel’ and ‘real’ like never before.

The Season 2 NGT Order of Merit winner will receive invites to play in DP World Tour and Challenge Tour events in 2024.

Use The Grove's Trackman-equipped driving range

Never has golf’s premier tours considered a qualification-based pathway wholly reliant on the accuracy of and integrity of technology. It’s a significant statement.

Trackman now has the responsibility to influence not just performance, but career-changing opportunity.

And when asked if a future Major champion could one day emerge from NGT origins, Linde’s response was not uncertain.

“Absolutely, it might already be happening.”

As a new pro, Oregon University graduate Sofie Kibsgaard was facing all the challenges that most new pros are faced with – how do I finance my new life and where do I find sponsors to fund it?

Sofie ended up teeing it up on the NGT during the winter, winning round three at the Medinah Country Club, and with it close to $22,533 in Season 1.

Since her win in the sim , Kibsgaard has gone on to win twice on the Ladies European Tour (LET) Access Series , currently leading the Order of Merit, and has already secured a LET Tour card.

Sofie Kibsgaard is a winner on the NEXT Golf Tour

Without the financial burdens associated with grinding it out on lower-tier tours, players can swing away freely, motivated by opportunity alone.

These are the success stories that Trackman will hope to tell as their journey toward creating the biggest professional tournament series in golf progresses.

Formula One Esports Series and cycling’s Zwift Esports World Championship have already made headway in this arena, providing platforms for amateur athletes to test their metal against the best in the business.

Turkish racer Cem Bolukbasi became the first virtual racer from F1’s Esports series to make the real-world step up by competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

Opportunities need to be exploited when they present themselves, and Trackman has done just that with the NGT, demonstrating shrewd business acumen to ensure their class-leading product can thrive in a fast-evolving technological landscape.

Golf's technological landscape is evolving

The simulation bandwagon will be further loaded in 2024 with the considerable weight of Rory McIlroy , Tiger Woods, and their virtual TGL Golf League.

The TGL will see the duo joined by fellow PGA Tour pros to compete in front of a live Monday night studio audience on a tech-infused virtual course, giving fans a fun and interactive insight into how the best play the game.

Golf as we currently know it is starting to cut new shapes, and if the two loudest voices in the game decide that embracing technology is a solution to generating a new fan base, who can stand in their way?

Democratizing golf

A final reason why the endeavors of Trackman should be encouraged is the potential to help golf break down long-standing participation barriers.

A ‘Golf for All’ research project , commissioned by the UK’s Professional Golfers Association (PGA) recently highlighted how participation in non-traditional formats of the game accounts for over twice that of on-course golfers.

This previously undiscovered wave of hungry adventure golfers includes those who use driving ranges, pitch, and putt courses, and two million already swinging in golf simulators.

SimGolf is an indoor golf facility in Copenhagen

This potential for golf to be more inclusive of different forms of the game and the people who play them has not gone unnoticed by Trackman.

“We think indoor golf has the potential to democratize the game, says Linde.

“It’s super exciting. We can gamify the golf experience, making it more interesting and less intimidating for people to access the sport.”

The golf simulator is the perfect hybrid to bridge this gap, rescuing golf from its wider accessibility challenges, and filling the bottom of the participation pyramid with a new mixed-gender, socio-economic, and ethnically diverse player pool ready to swing like no-ones watching.

After all, concerns of not being good enough don’t exist in golf’s simulated world.

Simulated golf is a great way to break down participation barriers

A positive experience for casual golfers today can be a positive influence on competitive golfers tomorrow.

And this is why extending golf’s eco-system is at the heart of Trackman’s long-term vision.

The future of the NGT is about more than the experience, it’s about building a community that unites golfers around the world, irrespective of ability, enabling them to share every shot of their virtual journey via social media.

Even technophobes will find it hard to contain their excitement at the prospect of hitting some of the most iconic shots in golf, made possible through meticulous drone mapping with painstaking precision that captures every contour in photo-realistic detail.

It again comes back to accuracy and the pursuit of authenticity.

The NGT is spearheading golf’s voyage into the ‘great indoors’, and its future is looking bright, with a distinctly orange tone.

TRACKMAN TEES UP SEASON 2 OF THE NEXT GOLF TOUR

November 13, 2023

The world’s top professional indoor golf tour is back with even more opportunities for golfers to compete globally, earn significant income and advance their careers

Vedbæk, Denmark — Following a successful inaugural season last winter, Trackman has announced the return of the world’s leading professional indoor golf tour: The NEXT Golf Tour Powered by Trackman. Season 2 begins November 24.

NEXT Golf Tour is a new professional golf tour for men and women played on Trackman simulators. A total of 994 golfers from 41 countries took part in Season 1, competing for a total purse of $876,100. The leading money-winner took home $69,561, eight players earned more than $20,000, and 45 picked up at least $5,000.

“With the success of the NEXT Golf Tour in Season 1, Trackman proved that competing on indoor simulators can be an instrumental tool in helping professional golfers achieve their goals,” said Klaus Eldrup-Jørgensen, Trackman co-founder and CEO.

European Tour group partnership

Providing grinders with career-changing opportunities is a big reason why NEXT exists. This year, Trackman and the European Tour group reached an agreement to invite the top male performer of Season 2 to play in three Challenge Tour events and one DP World Tour event in 2024.

Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament Business Officer at the European Tour group, underscored the NEXT Golf Tour’s importance in helping the European Tour group realize its vision of making the game more accessible, developing future stars and attracting new audiences to the game.

“Thanks to the technological innovation of Trackman, virtual golf is now incredibly sophisticated and realistic,” said Cowen. “It is also a tool regularly used by Challenge Tour and DP World Tour players to hone their skills and equipment when they are away from the course. We look forward to seeing NEXT’s top male player teeing it up in 2024.”

The NEXT Golf Tour is pursuing similar opportunities for female players that it plans to reveal during the season.

Virtual golf. Real opportunity.

Season 2 of the NEXT Golf Tour consists of seven mixed-field, individual stroke play events on select Trackman virtual golf courses. Rounds 1–6 are 18 holes, followed by a 36-hole Season Finale, and can be played in any Trackman simulator worldwide that is running the latest version of Trackman Performance Studio.

Round 1 will see players tee off at the iconic Marco Simone Golf & Country Club (Nov. 24–Dec. 3), before moving on to Medinah Country Club (Dec. 8–17) for Round 2 and the Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course (Jan 5–14) for Round 3.

Courses for Rounds 4–7 will be revealed soon.

The entry fee remains at $130 (including 25 percent Danish VAT and a small handling fee) per tournament. $100 of each entry fee is added to the purse, so the more players in the field, the greater the payouts. The top 30 percent of the field earns a paycheck.

Popular in-round “side games” — with payouts of up to $4,000 for aggregate closest-to-pin, longest drive (men and women), longest birdie-or-better streak and more — will continue to offer significant earning potential.

Once again, men and women will compete straight-up from different tee boxes, and all players with a handicap of 3.4 or better are encouraged to join.

The top 100 players (plus ties) on the Order of Merit through the first six events will qualify for the Season Finale. They will compete for a $100,000 purse, with a $50,000 bonus pool distributed to the top 10 finishers on the final Order of Merit. The 2024 NEXT Golf Tour champion will also receive the coveted Trackman Trophy.

What’s new for Season 2

More events. More action. More money. After posting an off-the-charts Net Promoter Score of 91 for Season 1, Trackman made several changes to further enhance the NEXT Golf Tour experience heading into the new season:

  • Expanded fields — Each of the first six events is open to 1,000 players. The purse in a standard full-field event will climb to $200,000.
  • Elevated events — Rounds 3 and 6 have been designated as elevated events, with $50,000 added to the purse.
  • Larger winners’ checks — First place in Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 is now fixed at $30,000. In elevated events (Rounds 3 and 6), the champion will take home $50,000.
  • Manual putting — Beginning with Round 3, players will putt when they are on the green and outside gimme range (2.4 m/8 ft). Putting will remain automatic for Rounds 1–2.
  • NEXT Recorder app — Players will now use the NEXT Recorder app to record their rounds. Video recordings are automatically uploaded to Trackman after each hole.
  • Live leaderboards — Fans will be able to follow players’ rounds in near-real time, with a split-screen view of every shot on every hole.
“Last year we accomplished something special together,” said Eldrup-Jørgensen. “Now the time has come for us all to capitalize on our success and tee it off to the next level. Our aim is to build the biggest professional tour in the world — measured by the number of players competing in the same tournament. “The sky is the limit for players, facility owners and Trackman. Together we can power NEXT to chase down our dreams. Now, let’s have some fun!”

Swing Man Golf

Swing Speed of European PGA Tour and PGA Tour Driving and Iron Stats

by swingmangolf | Mar 20, 2010 | Golf Tour

By Jaacob Bowden

Have you ever been curious to know how fast your favorite Tour player’s swing speed is?

It’s not listed which tournament the stats came from, but it is believed these Flightscope stats came from an European Tour event in 2008. Stats included are last name, first name, club speed, ball speed, back spin, side spin, launch angle, height, flight time, carry distance (yards), and smash factor.

You can download the Flightscope documents below:

• European PGA Tour – Driving Stats (pdf) • European PGA Tour – Driving Stats (excel) • European PGA Tour – Driving Stats Sample 2 (pdf)

Trackman has also kept the average stats of all the PGA Tour players from 2004-2008.  Stats included are club, club speed, attack angle, ball speed, smash factor, vertical launch, spin rate, max height, land angle, and carry (yards and meters).  Keep in mind that the club lofts are not listed.  For example, one guys PW might be 48 degrees…and another’s might be 45 degrees.

Check out the numbers in the below Trackman document:

•   PGA Tour Driver And Iron Stats – 2004-2008 (pdf)

Some of the things that I found interesting and noteworthy are:

• I’ve heard of the average swing speed for a Tour player being around 113-114…but      Flightscope and Trackman actually show that to be 110-112.

• Despite getting more driver distance by catching the ball on the upswing, the average player actually hits down on the ball with driver.

• Many professionals are not hitting drivers that would optimize them for distance. For example, based on my experience, the average launch angle is a little too low and the average spin rate is too high. This may be due to ignorance and mis-information, but it may also be done on purpose because accuracy becomes more important for many once they have reached a certain level of distance. The higher the spin with the driver, the more accuracy one would have off the tee.

• The long hitting, Alvaro Quiros of Spain, had the highest swing speed of the European Tour players at 125 mph. He may be doing it on purpose as I mentioned above, but if he brought his spin rate down and launch angle slightly higher…he could be hitting the ball even further.

• I’ve heard that 1.48 or 1.50 is “perfect” as far as smash factor goes with the driver. Since both data sets show an average of 1.48…Tour players would appear to be getting about as much ball speed as they can out of their current swing speeds. Basically, they are hitting the sweet spot a lot.

• Smash factor goes down when you get to higher lofted clubs.

If you liked the article about the swing speed of PGA and European PGA tour players with irons and you think it would help another golfer, please

TrackMan A/S has HQ in Denmark and has operations in USA, Canada, Australia, Korea, China, Japan, Scandinavia, Central Europe, UK, Spain, France. We strive to assist professionals, amateurs, teachers and business with exact and easy to use quantitative analysis. Trackman wishes to give our customers the best possible foundation for game / business improvement. The key is providing quality club and ball flight measurements that you can take action on.

In 2002, Dr. Klaus Eldrup-Jorgensen and his brother Morten had a vision of what golf would be like in the future. In his youth, Klaus played on the Danish National Team and even qualified for three European Tour events as an amatuer where he competed against Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and other golfing greats. Klaus felt that teaching and golf practice literally had not changed during the last 30 years, not taking advantage of new technologies that would allow golfers to have feedback on their golfswing. Klaus and Morten, set out a vision to change that.

That vision took a step towards reality after meeting with one of the leading radar engineers in the world, Fredrik Tuxen. At the time, Fredrik was working in the radar industry where he designed solutions for military applications such as missile tracking. After discussions between Klaus, Morten and Fredrik about what was possible with radar technology, they formed TrackMan in May 2003.

Fredrik and the team he assembled spent the next years designing the first version of TrackMan, but at this point there was not a single customer. Calls were made to five of the leading manufacturers in golf with a simple message. “We have a system that can track the entire ball flight of a golf ball.” Even though the manufacturers were skeptical to say the least, the meetings were arranged. Within two weeks of those meetings, TrackMan had five new customers. Since then the TrackMan product and name has become the gold standard for club delivery and ball flight measurements and has been used on the PGA TOUR since 2006. The TrackMan product has evolved from a R&D tool to a club fitting tool and now the most coveted teaching tool in golf. mytrackman.com allows the golfer to take advantage of the data and information collected by TrackMan. Now it’s time for you to test, track, and improve your golf game.

The tournament gives fans a solid dose of excellent all-round golf entertainment, just when it’s needed.

Rufus Hack, the European Tour’s Chief Content Officer, says: “While the absolute priority for all of us has been, and continues to be, public health and well-being, we also recognize that golf fans are missing watching the leading players compete. Hopefully, the BMW Indoor Invitational powered by TrackMan can help fill the void and provide our fans with some entertainment across the next five weeks whilst also benefitting charities or relief funds which have been so essential in the battle against Coronavirus.”

“ In a time when pro golf tours around the world are being forced to take a break, we are able to offer golf fans, as well as the pros themselves, a unique competition in the form of the BMW Indoor Invitational powered by TrackMan. We are looking forward to the coming weeks, an innovative format, and some exciting digital content,“ says Jörn Plinke, Head of BMW Golfsport Marketing. “BMW enjoys long-term partnerships with TrackMan and the European Tour and shares the aspiration to also drive golf further with a digital format. Together, we have managed to create a new type of competition, which features a host of top players and, with the prize money on offer, supports local Coronavirus initiatives.”

With TrackMan Virtual Golf, we’re able to play tournaments on iconic, internationally recognized courses that will push the players to their limits. The tournament will be extremely challenging but also great fun. We’re all really looking forward to it!” says Klaus Eldrup-Jørgensen, CEO & Co-Founder TrackMan A/S.

TrackMan is contracted to provide swing and ball flight data to the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour. As a result of this data accumulation, TrackMan publishes statistical averages for both tours. These are useful reference points for amateur golfers whether practicing outside, or on a golf simulator in an indoor golf or golf lounge environment. The average male golfer should make reference to the LPGA statistics in addition to the PGA Tour numbers (e.g. Driver Attack Angle).

Business Wire

VEDBÆK, Denmark--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Following a successful inaugural season last winter, Trackman has announced the return of the world’s leading professional indoor golf tour: The NEXT Golf Tour Powered by Trackman .

Popular in-round "side games" — with payouts of up to $4,000 for aggregate closest-to-pin, longest drive (men and women), longest birdie-or-better streak and more — will continue to offer significant earning potential.

  • Larger winners’ checks — First place in Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 is now fixed at $30,000 . In elevated events (Rounds 3 and 6), the champion will take home $50,000 .

PLAYER TESTIMONIALS

Rasmus Rosin Home: Sweden Plays on: Nordic Golf Tour NEXT Season 1 earnings: $69,561

Despite finishing the season without a tournament victory, Rosin was the runaway winner of the Season 1 Order of Merit. He also earned an invitation to play in the 2023 BMW International Open.

“I got the opportunity — thanks to the NEXT Golf Tour — to play a DP World Tour event this year. I’ve always dreamed about it, and it was amazing just to be there and see how all the pros train on the range and the putting green.”

“That’s something I will always take with me as a confidence booster going into tournaments in the Nordic League. I know that I can play good golf.”

Sofie Kibsgaard Home: Denmark Plays on: Ladies European Tour NEXT Season 1 earnings: $23,033

Kibsgaard made history in Round 3 by becoming the first female to win on the NEXT. She carried that momentum into her rookie season on the LET Access Series, where she won three events and earned promotion to the Ladies European Tour ahead of the 2024 season.

“It’s fun to play against the men, to see the leaderboard and know you can play among them. And then especially to win it was very, very big for me.”

“This definitely ranks high as one of the biggest moments of my professional career. It’s been so fun.”

Nikke Tyry Home: Finland Plays on: Nordic Golf Tour NEXT Season 1 earnings: $24,418

On the heels of winning Round 4 in Season 1, Tyry went on to enjoy a sterling outdoor season — culminating with his first Finnish Tour title at the Telia Samsung Open.

“The NEXT Golf Tour is great value for money if you play golf because you don’t have any travel expenses and you play for big money. So, it was a no-brainer for me.”

“I won Round 4, I started believing in myself and then I played the season of my life outdoors. So I’m very thankful for the NEXT Golf Tour because it’s something we really needed.”

Leslie Cloots Home: Belgium Plays on: Epson Tour NEXT Season 1 earnings: $815

Cloots, who works as a coach when she’s not pursuing her own pro golf dreams, hopes to see more women join Season 2 of the NEXT Golf Tour.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to continue playing during the offseason.”

“It keeps you sharp and your routine and competitive juices flowing. It’s a different setting, but I think it’s great. During first couple weeks back outside, I could definitely tell that my swing was in a good spot.”
