Believe me, as you dart from city to city, be it by plane, train, taxi, or bus, bulky luggage is the last thing you need.

With temperatures fluctuating during the day and night, having layers like tanks , t-shirts , lightweight cardigans , button down oxfords and scarves can help you adjust accordingly. The key to selecting the right layers is knowing the weather conditions of your destination. This is always the first step to planning your travel wardrobe capsule for European travel.

Choose the layers that are right for the weather conditions and build your travel outfits from there. If you expect warmer days and cool nights and mornings a tank with a lightweight cardigan serves as the base for your travel outfit that you can pair with pants or a skirt.

Comfortable Footwear

In Europe, walking is central to the experience, making your shoe choice essential. I cannot stress this enough, expect to walk at least 10,000 steps a day or more. Travel shoes literally make or break your trip! Always select your travel shoes FIRST and plan outfits around them.

Adopt the “ TRAVELISTA DUO/TRIO ” approach:

• Primary Walking Pair : Durable, neutral-colored sneakers perfect for lengthy explorations. These are your “daily drivers” that you will rely on for the majority of your trip.
• Secondary Mix-up Pair : Opt for comfy flats, loafers, or versatile boots for cooler days or to switch up your looks. Look for pairs that are comfortable and stylish.
• Optional Third Pair : Choose based on specific travel activities not met by the first two pairs.

Resist adding “just one more pair.” Typically, 2-3 pairs suffice for European city jaunts. For unique itineraries with special events or adventures, consider specific shoes. Shoes are the heaviest items in your suitcase and take up the most room so it’s best to stick to the absolute essentials.

Versatile Outerwear

A trench coat is the European classic choice. It’s the ultimate in versatility because it’s lightweight and it matches just about anything. It can also be worn dressed up or down. A lightweight version is perfect for fall travel.

If a trench coat doesn’t fit into your style a utility jacket or leather jacket are also good options. A blazer is a good lightweight choice as well but doesn’t offer much protection from the elements. The weather of your destination determines which outerwear options you select.

Essential Clothing Pieces

When selecting travel attire, aim for pieces that pair well with 2-3 other items. While it’s great to create multiple outfits from a few essentials, don’t overthink it. The goal is versatility, especially for longer trips. Avoid single-use items unless they serve a specific event in your itinerary, like a dress for a wedding. Always prioritize multipurpose clothing for a more functional travel capsule.

• Jeans: A pair of well-fitted jeans can be dressed up or down and are perfectly appropriate for European travel. The right pair should be endlessly versatile and pair easily with your tops and shoe options.
• Trouser/Dark Pant/Jean: In Europe, women frequently pair trousers with sneakers for a casual look, with trousers and black Converse being a favorite combo. Adapt this style for travel, or opt for dark chinos or black denim jeans if trousers aren’t your preference. Keep bottom silhouettes consistent to ensure compatibility with your footwear, as shoes fitting wide-leg pants might not suit skinny jeans and vice versa.
• Dresses: A dress is a travelers BFF! Talk about one and done! Find the style that’s right for you and that matches all of your footwear and outerwear. Neutral tones and patterns give you the most versatility. I personally love the midi-length but choose what works best for your personal style. Plan to pair with tights if you’re expecting chilly weather.
• Tops: Choose from a mix of basic tees, tanks, button downs and blouses to match with your bottoms. Neutral tones provide the most flexibility in planning travel outfit options.
• Mid-Layers: Choose a lightweight sweater, either a pullover or cardigan style. Cardigans are versatile items because you can easily slip them on and off to deal with changing temperatures. Sweaters made of lightweight merino wool or cashmere aren’t bulky and they are highly insulating. When choosing a mid-layer, check that the color complements with the outerwear and tops you’ve selected.

Accessorize Smartly

Don’t underestimate the power of accessories to transform your neutral travel outfits! Knit pashmina scarfs provide warmth on chilly evenings and a splash of color. Small and colorful print silk scarves seem “oh so chic” and brighten up what may be an otherwise boring outfit. A small “jewelry capsule” of a simple necklace and earrings can help elevate any look.

As far as handbags go, the crossbody is my bag of choice for European travel. Choose one that can hold your daily essentials and that complements your travel clothes. I like to bring a black or dark colored neutral for daily travel activities and a more fun option for evening. I have been using this website at least since 2015, if not before and the information is invaluable. I love traveling to Europe in the fall! Venice, Florence, and Rome were perfect in October, requiring few layers. Vienna and Budapest were also temperate. Prague was cooler with a heavy rain. I wore suede athletic shoes liberally sprayed with a waterproofing material that kept everything dry, so I did not take another pair.

This feature is exactly why I needed as I’m preparing for a trip to Germany this fall. I love the mix of fashion tips and useful practical advice.

I’ve been traveling abroad for many years and found the TFG blog when researching what to pack for my second trip to Paris, just about 10 years ago so happy anniversary! Here I am again planning another trip to my favorite city but for the fall the first time (I’ve been in winter, spring, and summer) and TFG is still my trusted source for packing tips. I have a lighter weight wool pink coat I typically reserve for spring, but I may try the suggestion above and pack it for fall this time if the weather is cool enough. How to Build the Perfect Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

The key to building the perfect fall travel capsule wardrobe ? Finding versatile basics that can be worn with a variety of clothing pieces you already own. Investing in comfortable and timeless staples ensures you always have something to wear for every occasion, and can help trim down your packing list throughout the year (it's a more sustainable way of shopping, too). Instead of filling your carry-on with trendy items you might wear, start packing reliable essentials you are confident you'll put on again and again.

Whether you're commuting to the office, heading on a business trip, or touring a new museum, a trouser is always a safe bet. Pair them with comfortable white sneakers if your itinerary calls for casual or loafers for a more sleek and put-together look.

A light-colored, slightly oversized trench coat is possibly the most chic essential on our list. It's also one of the most classic—this water-resistant and lightweight coat isn't going out of style anytime soon. It offers an effortlessly put-together look and isn't too bulky to pack or too heavy to wear this season. It's that perfect in-between piece of outerwear for a day exploring New York City or London .

As the temperature begins to drop this season, you'll need a warm yet packable jacket to throw on. I never travel with at least one in my suitcase come fall, and it always ends up being one of my most-worn pieces.

One versatile staple our editors agree we never travel without: a white button-down . This year-round essential deserves a spot in our suitcases no matter we're headed—it looks as great with a pair of jeans and loafers to the office as it does over a swimsuit on a beach vacation .

Some occasions call for a slightly more elevated outfit. Comfort meets fashion with these versatile dresses—they're not restrictive or difficult to style and transition well through different seasons. Why A Capsule Wardrobe is Smart for Travel

No one wants to pay baggage fees when traveling. If you are trying to keep your items to a carry-on suitcase only, then you will need to choose smart pieces that mix well so that you can use them in a variety of outfits.

We love these capsule wardrobes for fall because:

• Only two pairs of shoes to bring. Shoes are among the biggest items to pack, taking up the most amount of room. Wear one pair of shoes to travel and you only need to pack one more pair in the suitcase.
• Using only 14 items , these capsule wardrobes create 15 different outfits complete with shoes, bag and accessories. Even if you change clothes once each day before going out in the evening, that’s a week’s worth of clothing .
• Each of these outfits is perfect on its own. However, you can add a jacket or shawl to each outfit for cooler weather.
• Bring an extra scarf or statement necklace and you will instantly transform these styles, as well. Scarves and necklaces take up little room in your luggage yet offer a pop of color.

But before we get onto the specific items we put in our favorite fall travel capsule wardrobe, we first thought it would be a good idea to tell what is a fall travel capsule wardrobe, why you should pack one and where it can be used.

What is a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

To know what a fall travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe is. Travel capsule wardrobes are a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

• The 54321 packing method
• the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method).

A Fall travel capsule wardrobe as you may have already guessed is a seasonal version of our travel capsule wardrobes that ensure you have everything you need for an autumn getaway.

This Fall packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Fall months of September, October and November. In places with traditional Fall weather i.e. Europe in Fall, the North East USA and Canada in Fall for instance.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere Fall is obviously catagorized as March, April and May.

So now you know what a Fall travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe the first thing I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

However a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe. In fact I find monochrome to be the most boring way to create a capsule wardrobe.

For Fall capsule wardrobes however, I personally like to have a more muted color palette, especially for traveling to Europe. That is because it fits in with local styles more.

My favorite color palettes for an autumn capsule wardrobe tend to be camel and navy. But I also love touches of orange and also khaki.

However if you like black and white or bright colors then go for it. After all if you don’t feel comfortable in the color selection or choice then you won’t love your capsule wardrobe.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Fall capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Fall weather in September, October and November. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Also, this Fall Travel Capsule wardrobe is designed for city breaks and traditional fall outings such as pumpkin picking and seeing the Fall colors. However for more extreme activities be sure to pack appropriately for the activity.

Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a fall travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include:

Best Pants for Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only.

For my Fall travel capsule wardrobe I think a pair in navy blue or black is most versatile. However if you want to be more daring these pants come in a variety of colors.

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Fall packing list.

A pair of black jeans are a super versatile pieces and hide stains easier than a light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style.

If you are traveling in the US or Canada I would select the style of jeans you are most comfortable i.e. your favorite jeans from home. However for mainland Europe I would stick to smarter jeans and skinny jeans as opposed to boyfriend jeans or baggy jeans. That is because these are more akin to local styles.

Dress / Skirt

My final item I would add to your bottoms selection for Fall season is either a dress or a skirt. In many places in Europe in particular you will find the locals sticking to a smart casual dress code for dinner. And a dress for me is one of the best fall travel outfits to have with you.

A dress that can be used for sightseeing in the day but that can also be dressed up at night is a great addition to the capsule wardrobe. Especially if you can add splashes of color with accessories such as jewelry and pashminas.

For September and even maybe early October, depending on where you are traveling to, I like to wear a dress with a light jacket. However for Late October and November I like to pair a dress with thick tights and boots for the cooler weather at night.

Personally I like a midi skirt or dress for Fall but pick a silhouette most in keeping with your usual style.

Best Tops for Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your fall travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain black tee.

If you are traveling in Early Fall then a short sleeve t shirt is a great choice however for November you may find a long sleeve t shirt a more versatile choice.

Note: I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your fall outfit combos. And secondly they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

For Autumn travel I always have a printed blouse with a 3/4 length sleeve with me. These are great for places with dress codes such as Churches in Italy, the Vatican and Sagrada Familia to name a few.

And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

I like to have a patterned blouse as the pants I pack are plain, a patterned top is a great way of adding some texture, color and detail.

As well as a blouse, I also like to have a button down shirt with me. Now depending on when in Autumn I am traveling, the weather and activities I am doing will depend on the shirt I pack.

If it is going to be a more casual vacay then a traditional lumber jack or check shirt is a great choice.

However for the most versatile shirt to pack, you really can’t go wrong with an over sized white button-up shirt.

Best Layers for your Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel however these are especially important in Fall. I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel. For Fall my preferred layers are:

Camel Cardigan

For me a camel cardigan is one of those timeless pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe as they are great for year-round capsule wardrobes.

They pair well will denim and black pants and are an elegant top layer for dinners and evenings out.

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

But I would also pack some top layers / Jackets. You won’t need all of these but it is best to pick in relation to the weather at your destination

Best Jackets for Fall Travel

Leather jacket.

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

Another good alternative is a trench coat especially if you are traveling somewhere where you are expecting to see some rainy days.

Heavier Jacket

If you are traveling in the cooler months of late fall then a heavier jacket or puffer is a good idea for chillier temperatures. In some rare occasion you may need a full coat but this is destination specific.

Shoes for Autumn Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack. However for my Autumn travel capsule wardrobe I recommend just two pairs of shoes. They are:

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. BUt ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However overall the most versatile sneaker for Fall travel has to be plain white sneakers. My current favorite brand is the Addidas Cloud Foam as they are just so comfy for walking in and work well worn with dresses, skirts, jeans and more.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for Fall travel. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

Depending on the color palette of your wardrobe will depend whether a black or brown boot will be most appropriate. Personally I favor a brown boot but this is a personal choice.

And the last item on my list is something I never travel without

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Best Accessories for your Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Fall travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Fall travel accessories include:

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo. Let’s face it who hasn’t posed at a famous landmark with a hand on their hat?.

Well depending on where you are traveling to and the activities you are doing you may also want to include:

• a bathing suit – only required for beach destinations or if you are staying somewhere with a pool or a geothermal pool like the Blue Lagoon in Iceland in October .
• a compact travel umbrella – needed if you are going to a rainy destination.
• universal travel adaptor – I always travel with one.

Packing for a fall trip to Europe is a pretty daunting task, whether you’re traveling for a few days or a few weeks. You want to be prepared for autumn’s sunny days, chilly nights, and bouts of rain, all without dragging along an unwieldy amount of luggage. For me, the solution is to pack a capsule wardrobe – a carefully edited and remixable collection of clothes that can see me through the entire trip.  

When I’m starting to pack for a trip, the first thing I do is find the pieces in my closet that will work best for whatever is on my itinerary – usually lots of walking, city exploring, visiting museums, finding new restaurants, and taking a day trip or two. Once I’ve gathered several pieces – some walkable shoes , my favorite jeans , a couple dresses , a staple sweater – things start to come together. I organize everything with this wardrobe app   (or just lay everything out), and I can see any gaps that need to be filled. 

By the time I’m headed to the airport, I have about 20 different outfits in just a few packing cubes . If you plan to wear your bulkiest (& coziest) clothes on your flight and pack a tote bag with toiletries and electronics, you should have no problem making the trip with just carry-on luggage . This fall season holds a lot of travel for me, and I’ll be packing variations of this capsule wardrobe over and over again – it is so much easier to get around (and enjoy your trip) with less!

Tops : For easy layering, keep most of your tops lightweight. A little pattern and texture  make neutral pieces a bit more interesting. 

Bottoms : I bought this faux leather skirt last year, and it’s one of my favorite cold-weather pieces. Along with jeans, pants, and a printed skirt, you should be set.

Dresses : From sunny market days to evenings out, a dress is always quick and comfortable. Bring a pair of tights along if your forecast looks chilly!

Jackets : Bring a good selection of extra layers to keep warm as temperatures drop. Sweaters, jackets and coats also make it a bit more fun to style an outfit. 

Shoes : For all the walking you’ll be doing, pack comfortable flats , nice leather sneakers , and walkable ankle boots . Add in something slightly less practical for when you want to feel fancier. 

Accessories : A leather tote bag is perfect for travel, shopping, and day trips. For everything else, use a crossbody purse . Sunglasses, earrings, and a cozy scarf go a long way for feeling put together.

The ultimate travel capsule wardrobe.

Being a skilled packer is not an easy feat. There is a formula that goes into creating the perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe and I’m here to teach you my ways! With a little bit of strategy and a few classic versatile pieces, you will be packing light in no time. Along with that, while this collection can take you anywhere in the world, it’s designed for a European destination. Finally, read on for tips on How to Dress European so you don’t stand out as a tourist!

Classic Clothing Items to Invest in

When curating your travel wardrobe you want to start off with good solid pieces that will interchange with many outfits. These are the pieces to invest in because they will last for your trips in years to come! Also, always remember the cardinal rule when packing: stick to a similar color palette. It makes life easier when you’re on the road. Consider this your packing list for classic items:

Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is the clothing equivalent to a good black purse. It’s a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Being that it’s lightweight, I travel with mine the majority of the time. When shopping for your trench stick to a classic style.

White Button Down

The perfect all-season staple is a white button-down . Whether you’re wearing it with jeans, a leather skirt, or simply leggings you can never go wrong with this minimalist piece. I love wearing mine through the airport with leggings or with jean shorts in the summer. Being that they will never go out of style, this is a great piece to invest in.

A classic blazer will dress up any look with its sharp silhouette! It’s no longer a staple for the office we are taking the blazer everywhere with us. You can never go wrong styling a blazer with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Or take it out to a fancy dinner paired over a midi dress and heels. Finally, throw it on with leggings and a tee at the airport for a polished look.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers have taken the fashion industry by storm in the past few years. They have become a new classic staple and I am here for it! Not only are they comfortable but they’re uber stylish as well. You can’t go wrong with that combo and the trousers I linked come in multiple colors.

Midi Dress (Spring/Summer)

A midi dress is a perfect balance between casual and polished. For summer travel, you can easily wear it with sneakers for a day of sightseeing or paid with heels and a clutch for a night out. It’s also a very flattering silhouette to add to your closet!

Sweater Dress (Fall/Winter)

The fall equivalent of a midi dress is a sweater midi dress . A cold weather staple and one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing to travel in during the colder months. Pair with sneakers for a daytime look or high-heeled boots for a fancy dinner. It rounds out your travel capsule wardrobe perfectly.

Straight Leg Jeans

I have a love-hate relationship with jeans when it comes to traveling but they are no doubt one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can add to your wardrobe. Stick to a straight-leg style since they are very trendy at the moment. You also want a pair that fits properly or else you will be uncomfortable. These AG Golde jeans come highly recommend and the material is a bit stretchy.

Neutral Cardigan

Cardigans have been in fashion for decades. Not only that but a cardigan comes in handy during those long-haul flights and train rides. I like to pair my neutral cardi with straight-leg jeans, a tank top, and sneakers for a travel day polished look.

Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are a great way to round out your travel capsule wardrobe. You can easily filter these pieces in and out as you see fit. Finally, when shopping for trendy clothes I tend to go out of the box in terms of colors and patterns as I will filter out these pieces within a year or so.

Statement Blouse

A statement blouse truly makes a statement. The best part about wearing a statement blouse is you can keep your other articles of clothing simple. Let the blouse have its own moment!

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers are another hot item that has taken the fashion world by storm. I don’t see leather slowing down as a trend so pick yourself up a pair of classic pants to last years to come.

Black Split Front Pants

These split-front pants elevate any outfit but feel like leggings. Sounds like a win-win for me! Pair this with a white button-down, black booties, and throw on a trench coat and you have yourself a solid European Outfit.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Retro sneakers.

The sneaker trend is not going anywhere so buckle up sister and buy yourself a nice pair of retro sneakers . These can easily be styled with a dress and denim jack. Or opt to wear them with split front pants and a white button-down.

Wearable Heels

I tend to only pack one pair of wearable heels when traveling to Europe. Mostly because of the cobblestone streets. They do not pair well with heels. However, if you choose a pair with a chunky heel you’ll be waltzing down those streets in style.

Black Heeled Booties

The versatility of Black Heeled Booties is endless! Whether you pair it with leather trousers and a statement blouse or opt for a more casual look with jeans and a white button-down you can trust these booties to last for years. I always splurge on accessories because they are mostly worn in my wardrobe.

Crossbody Bag

I love a good shoulder bag like the rest of the fashion world but when traveling I always carry a crossbody bag . For multiple reasons one being scams and pickpocketers. When wearing your crossbody in front of your person you are less likely to have someone rummaging through there when no one is looking. I love this trendy crossbody from Marc Jacobs because it’s the perfect blend of classic and trendy.

Wide Brim Fedora

An easy way to elevate any daytime look is by adding a wide brim fedora . You can pair it with a leather jacket and jeans for a daytime look or with a sweater dress and over-the-knee boots for a night out. The best part about wearing a hat while traveling is not only do you look chic but it protects your face from the sun.

Travel Tote Bag

An ideal tool that comes in handy for travelers is a tote bag . Whether you’re toting around your laptop at the airport or simply shopping in the European markets, bringing a classic tote bag on your trip will always be a good idea.

Black Sunglasses

Chic, timeless, and classic. I am describing these Le Specs Sunglasses that I own in two colors because they are that good. We love a good pair of sunglasses to hide our tired eyes while traveling. Finally, they are under $70 so it’s a steal.

How to Dress European

The key to blending in with the Europeans is creating an outfit that has 3 elements: classic, cool, and minimalism. If you can learn this formula you will be golden. Another important thing to remember is that Europeans do not wear activewear as a leisure outfit unless they are quite literally on their way to the gym. So leave the lululemon and baseball caps at home! One of the main reasons we want to blend in as locals when traveling is because you are less susceptible to being targeted for a travel scam. Here are a few packing tips to help you dress like a European:

• Stick to classic clothing, you can also dare to be trendy with some pieces because it is Europe after all
• Wear neutral colors
• Bring comfortable walking shoes that look elevated
• Leave the athleisure wear and logos at home
• Don’t wear jeans often, they used to be a big no-no but in recent years have become more accepted in Europe. Opt for a straight leg or wide leg pair they are tres chic
• Alternatively, if you are wearing a feminine outfit choose a menswear-inspired shoe

This is especially important for fall travels when the fashion is bulkier items such as sweaters, boots, and warm jackets. Keep reading to learn how to assemble a super cute and simple fall capsule wardrobe that will guarantee the cutest autumn vacation outfits.

1. Basic Short Sleeve T-Shirt or Bodysuit

You can’t go wrong with a basic short-sleeve t-shirt or bodysuit. Between the two, it’s up to your preference. I like bodysuits because I tend to prefer the tucked-in look.

Either way, they’re light, easy to throw on under other clothes, and look good whether you wear them with jeans for a relaxed look or dress them up with nicer pants.

A simple tee is also great for layering with jackets, sweaters, and cardigans.

2. Basic Long Sleeve T-Shirt or Bodysuit

When it gets a bit chillier, a long-sleeve t-shirt or bodysuit is great. They’re perfect for layering and go well with both jeans and trousers for different styles.

3. Dark-Wash Jeans

Dark jeans are a must-have because they’re easy to match with anything and look good both day and night. They’re great with a comfy sweater for daytime or a nice top for going out in the evening.

I recommend finding a pair of denim jeans that fit you amazing, which is so hard to find, but very worth it. Be sure your jeans are comfortable to wear all day and make you feel confident.

I’m all about wearing what you like, but if you want to be on trend, look for a straight leg or “mom” jean. Although, you’ll have to pry my skinny jeans out of my millennial wardrobe.

4. Trouser or Leather Pants

Trousers or leather pants can make your outfit look a bit more fancy. They’re great for when you want to dress up a bit and match well with a light sweater or cardigan.

A great autumn capsule wardrobe will have one or the other, and it depends on preference. I love my Abercrombie leather pants, but also love the look of a tailored trouser.

5. Black Leggings

Black leggings are super comfortable and flexible. Perfect for long days of travel, you can wear them with a big sweater or long shacket.

Leggings are also super compact, making them easy to fit into carryon luggage.

6. Versatile Coat

A good coat is key for dealing with fall weather. Pick one that looks good over both a dress and a casual outfit like jeans and a t-shirt.

The right type of coat for your fall vacation depends on the weather forecast. If you’re heading somewhere warmer, you could get away with a light bomber jacket or trench coat.

For cooler climates, I recommend a heavy wool coat or a puffer jacket.

7. Rain Jacket

No matter where I travel, I always pack a rain jacket. After getting caught in a rainstorm in Amsterdam and having to explore the city in soaking wet jeans, I vowed to always pack one just in case.

For a fall vacation, a rain jacket is an even better idea because the weather can be very unpredictable. There are some packable rain coats that will take up very little suitcase space and can be a huge lifesaver if you end up in wet weather.

8. Cardigan

A cardigan is great for adding an extra layer. It’s perfect for cooler evenings and can be put over almost anything for more warmth and style.

Since fall weather can be unpredictable, a cardigan is a great item to have on hand to warm up any outfit. It can also be layered with shirt or dresses, and worn with any type of pant, making it super versatile.

9. Chunky Sweater

A big, comfy sweater is a fall favorite. It’s not just warm but also adds style. Wear it with jeans for a classic look or over a dress for something different.

10. Light-Weight Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is comfortable and stylish. Dress it up with boots and a hat for a city trip, or go casual with sneakers.

I also love to layer a chunky sweater, jean jacket, or cardigan over a dress for a more interesting look.

11. Comfortable Sneakers

Comfy sneakers are a must for those long days walking around. They should feel good on your feet and look good with jeans, leggings, or dresses.

12. Boots or Booties

A comfortable boot or bootie is great for switching from a daytime to nighttime look. It goes well with both casual and dressy outfits.

I prefer booties since they’re easier to pack. However, if you prefer boots, you can just wear them on the plane to save space!

Depending on the plan for your trip and your personal preference, pack a boot with or without a heel. If I’m planning an active trip, I’ll bring a flat boot.

Otherwise, I like a comfortable boot with my heel because my 5’3 self needs all the help I can get!

13. Everyday Handbag

Your everyday bag should be practical and stylish. Make sure it’s big enough for your daily stuff but still looks good with any outfit.

14. Cute Hat

A stylish hat not only looks good but is also useful on sunny or windy days. It can be worn with just about anything in this list to instantly make your outfit look better.

Fall Travel Outfit Ideas

Now that we’ve discussed all of the key pieces to have in your fall travel closet, let’s talk about all the different ways to put them together. Below are two examples of how to wear a clothing item in two different ways.

Example 1: Simple Sweater from Shopping to a Dinner Date

Sweaters are one of the bulkiest things to pack. It feels like 4 sweaters for a weekend trip takes up half of my carry on suitcase.

However, sweaters are also super versatile. The above graphics show how a sweater can be easily worn for different occasions.

For a casual daytime look, pair it with a tailored trouser, comfortable sneaker, and hat. For a nice dinner, layer the sweater over a dress with a heeled boot.

Example 2: Leather Pants from Day to Night

Above is a second example of how to mix and match your fall travel wardrobe in different outfits. These are two different ways to style a simple pair of leather pants.

For daytime, wear a casual sneaker and sweater. To dress up the pants for night, pair them with a bootie, bodysuit, and cute jacket.

Tips for Creating a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

You probably have a good idea of how to create a fall travel wardrobe. Here are some extra tips to ensure you are comfortable, on season, and can successfully squeeze everything into a suitcase.

1. Choose versatile pieces : Pack clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched. Look for neutral colors like black, brown, and cream, which can be paired with different items to create multiple outfits. 2. Layer up: Fall weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack items that can be layered. Pack lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and scarves that can be easily added or removed depending on the temperature. 3. Don’t forget about outerwear: As the temperatures start to drop, make sure to pack a versatile jacket or coat. Look for options that are both stylish and functional, like a classic trench coat or a cozy puffer jacket. Plan to wear this on the plane to save suitcase space. 4. Embrace an autumn color palette : The best way to look “on season” is to wear fall colors. Choose 1 or 2 from the following colors that can easily pair with more neutral basics: burgundy, mustard yellow, rust orange, and deep green, as well as pieces with plaid or houndstooth patterns. 5. Fall capsule wardrobe for travel: what to pack for Italy in October

For so many people (us included!) Italy is the stuff travel bucket lists are made of… amazing food and wine, world-famous museums, unparalleled hospitality, sweeping countryside hills and snow-covered mountains. With charm oozing from top to bottom, it’s no wonder Italy is one of the best destinations in Europe.

And autumn may very well be the best time of year to visit! The crowds are thinner, leaves are turning and the weather is moderate. But that moderate weather leaves would-be visitors with an important question: what to pack for Italy in October?

Packing for Europe in October can definitely post a challenge – this packing list is specific to Italy because its wide array of microclimates poses a major challenge, but it can apply similarly to what to wear in Europe in October for other countries as well. The first time we were going to Italy, I struggled with exactly that question and I’m not afraid to admit that i didn’t pack especially well.

So here’s your opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Whether you’re wondering what to wear in Venice or what to wear in Rome in October, keep reading to help you pack light, look good and (most importantly) stay comfortable.

Wondering how to dress in October in Italy in terms of style? It may be a futile effort to try to keep up with the insanely chic Italian women while also packing light for an active vacation, but it’s always wise to try not to stand out too much as a tourist – in this case, your “what not to wear in Italy” would be shorts, bulky white athletic shoes and a baseball cap (the stereotypical “ugly American tourist” look from the movies). But you’d do well to shoot for something in between that looks put-together without being overly fussy.

Many of these suggestions will be helpful in choosing travel clothes for Europe in fall, just remember that temperatures will be cooler as you move north from the Mediterranean.

One of the charms of most places to visit in Italy is that they’re so walkable! But all of that walking takes its toll on your feet if you don’t have comfortable shoes for travel – these will be the most important things to bring to Italy. The other factor to consider is the weather, which could vary from cool and rainy to blazing hot. My advice for how to pack for Italy is to start with comfortable, weather-appropriate shoes and then choose bottoms and tops that work with them. What are the most comfortable, stylish travel shoes that will also work with the weather in Italy in October? Here are a few ideas.

On our last visit to Rome, cute “athleisure” shoes shoes were very in among Roman women! I’ll admit that I was a little surprised, given the stereotype of Italian women in stilettos, but seeing practical footwear was a relief. Saucony seems to have cornered the market in Italy, and I saw lots of women wearing Saucony sneakers nearly identical to the ones I own. The best part? They come in dozens of colors and even can span the spectrum from toned-down to sporty to trendy.

Since my feet can be cranky, I also bring along these babies to swap in when I need to. With the upgraded insoles, you have the best travel shoe for women with plantar fasciitis – comfortable and stylish. I’ve also been known to swap laces on my sneakers for a different look – I think my black Sauconies looks much sharper with black laces, making these great shoes to wear in Rome. Don’t forget these amazing merino wool no-show socks to keep your feet comfortable and dry – they’re pricey, but also extremely durable and can be worn a few times between washing thanks to the anti-microbial properties of wool.

It’s always a good idea to bring two pairs of shoes in case your feet need a rest or you need something a little nicer. If you’re visiting Italy in early October (or even late September) and the forecast still looks warm, throw in a pair of TOMS Avalon slip-ons . They are extremely light, pack down small and have much more support than TOMS classics. I own the coated canvas, which stayed nice looking well into our year-long travels, and you can also pick up Avalons in leather or in fun patterns and colors. They look great with simple skirts, day dresses, pants or jeans – win for versatility in your travel capsule wardrobe for Italy in October! I think the Avalons make an ideal comfortable walking shoe for travel. They’re also good travel shoes for women with wide feet. These low-cut merino wool socks pair perfectly with TOMS and don’t show at all – plus they prevent the shoes from getting stinky. A similar alternative is the Sketchers GoWalk line .

If you’ll be spending more time in rain-prone areas of the country, or will be visiting Italy in late October or early November you might consider low-heeled black leather boots. These will also be handy if you’re figuring out what to wear in Tuscany in October, as you’ll probably encounter both mixed weather and terrain – the last thing you want to worry about on a winery visit is your footwear!

Personally I’d advise sticking with ankle boots so that they don’t take up too much room in your luggage when you aren’t wearing them. Make sure to choose comfortable boots for walking – don’t wreck your holiday with painful feet! I’m a big fan of Clark’s for their comfort and durability; if you’re debating what shoes to wear in Venice in October, these would be a solid choice . I recommend bringing one or two pairs of ankle-height merino wool socks if you plan to bring boots.

Alternatively, if you tend to the more casual side I can’t recommend the new Nike Air Max Thea Mid enough! I picked them up for our trip to Japan and wore them for 10 miles every day with basically no issues (beyond the expected exhaustion after that much walking for 10 days). They’re some seriously great shoes and I love them so much that I just bought the sneaker version too.

Many travelers worry what purse or daypack they should bring to Italy. You want to look good, you want to carry your water/scarf/sweater/guidebook/phone/lip balm, but you don’t want to get robbed. Obviously, this is important stuff! Especially in the major tourist destinations of Italy, security is a big concern. Knock on wood, we haven’t had an issue so far with anything being stolen from our bodies – and most tourists don’t. So while it’s important to consider, there’s no need to stress.

My preference is for a lightweight crossbody bag that zips, and maybe even has a magnetic flap closure over the zipper – this one is basically perfect . Why? Most of the stories I hear about thefts in Europe actually involve whole bags being stolen at cafes and restaurants, or someone lifting a phone out of a purse on public transit. My usual cross-body that I take out for evenings is light enough that I generally leave it on my shoulder and rest it in my lap rather than hanging it from my chair. When walking around, I keep it in front of me – sometimes with a hand on it if we’re in a theft-prone area like the Vatican or the Colosseum. Here are some of the best cross-body bags for travel:

If you want to step it up a notch in security, you can check out these options that add features like locking zippers and slash-proof straps. There are tons of options now that range from cute to practical, but personally I find the steel cable in the shoulder straps isn’t as comfortable – especially if I’m bringing a water bottle. That said, my husband doesn’t have the same issue and really enjoys his Travelon Urban Tour bag .

What if you’re carrying around a camera and worried about theft? A great solution from my buddy Kyla at Where is the World? is this PacSafe camera strap ! A slash-and-grab wouldn’t be possible, and your camera is always at the ready to photograph the amazing sites.

Alternatively, my suggestion is to bring a camera case that doesn’t scream “I have an expensive camera inside!” In Australia I picked up a small, nondescript camera case that perfectly fits my mirrorless camera with a big superzoom lens, plus an extra battery and memory card (and I can even sneak my iPhone into the outer pocket). It looks generic enough not to stand out in a crowd. I love that it’s barely bigger than the camera itself, so for travel I can easily consolidate it inside another carry-on bag for flights. While touring, I carry it cross-body and keep a hand on it.

Sadly the specific one that I use has been discontinued, but you can pick up this similar option from Peak Design in the 3L size. The company’s roots are in making camera bags. I have some other Peak Design bags that I love – their quality is top-notch and the designers really consider user needs in creating their thoughtful products. If you have a bigger camera quit or want to add a few more items to this day bag, you can bump up to the 6L or even 10L size!

If your travels will take you to the Eternal City, you’ll have to check the forecast closely! During our visit to Rome in October, the temperature climbed close to 80F (27C), and the intense light reflections from the buildings combined with the hours of endless walking to make for one warm vacation. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to have your shoulders and knees covered to enter churches – make sure to plan what to wear to the Vatican carefully so you aren’t stuck with a plastic wrap around you! We found temperatures in Florence and the Tuscan countryside to be a tiny bit cooler, but nothing an extra (removable) layer can’t fix. Layering is definitely your best friend when you’re picking your travel clothes for a Europe fall trip!

I’m a big fan of the capsule wardrobe concept – basically, make sure everything works together so that you can make an endless number of outfits from a limited selection of clothing. Pick your neutrals, pick one main accent color, and maybe pick one more secondary color for some accents.

For me, black bottoms are the easiest to work with (and they seem ubiquitous in Rome!) so if I’m packing for two weeks in Europe in fall I’d bring one pair of black jeans ( these Prana ones are perfect for travel and come in a variety of lengths), a black skirt, a few tops to match (including a mix of sleeve lengths and dressiness), a lightweight cardigan and one dress (I like a black t-shirt dress like this one because it works with the same shoes as everything else). I always like to bring at least one short necklace and one long necklace ( my fave! ) to add interest to my fall travel capsule wardrobe, and sometimes a scarf as well. Since evenings are cool, throw in a tailored black faux-leather jacket . Simple! Even if you don’t have laundry facilities, you can plan to wear each shirt two or three times and hand-wash an item or two in the sink in between if need be.

The weather in Venice in October can be much cooler and rainier than in Rome! During our visit in early October, I was so chilly that I almost bought myself some warmer clothing. Whoops! On average, you can expect daytime high temperatures in the mid-60s F and nighttime lows around 50F. There’s also a reasonable chance of rain, and boat rides can be chilly. Keep in mind that you’ll be walking non-stop over cobblestones, including lots of bridges. Choose your footwear wisely!

If your travels are restricted to northern Italy and other cooler areas, consider bringing two pairs of black pants ( jeans and another pair of black pants like these ), a black skirt, black tights to layer in case it’s cold, four tops, one sweater , a scarf and a mid-weight jacket in your Italy capsule wardrobe. I might skip on a dress in favor a skirt because it’s easier to work in a sweater for layering with a skirt. That combination should give you lots of options for mixing and matching to accommodate different levels of dressiness and temperature. Any two of the three shoes listed above should work nicely with this capsule wardrobe as well.

If you like wearing leggings, these awesome wool leggings are a big step up from athletic wear and they can be worn several times between washes without getting smelly. They’re also cozy enough to wear on the plane and to double as lounge wear!

Most people packing for Italy in October plan to visit several areas, and will likely encounter plenty of different climates and microclimates. What what should you pack for Italy in fall if you’ve got an epic cross-country trip planned? I’d go with a mix of what’s listed above for Venice and Rome (and maybe skew even more toward dresses and skirts if heading further south to places like Naples, Amalfi or even Sicily). This list should also help you plan what to pack for Europe in October if you’re planning a multi-country hop.

I like bringing patterned black and white tops that I can jazz up with a colorful accessory or two like this one  and  this one , but I’d also bring something like this one that coordinates with my scarf and can easily be layered under a sweater or jacket.) -1 sweater and 1 cardigan -1 mid-weight jacket -1 scarf -2 necklaces (one short /one long ) -2 shoes ( athleisure / slip-ons / boots )

If you’re trying to decide what to wear in Italy in September, you can plan on warmer weather all over the country. That means fewer or lighter layers and cooler shoes. Rainfall is also much lower in September.

Italy power adapter

What power adapter do you need for Italy? If your needs are simple, you might be able to get by with these cheap Europe plug adapters .

After bringing tons of them with us for years, we’ve come up with a better strategy! These days we have this high-quality global power adapter . It accepts plugs from anywhere and converts them to plugs for any destination. To meet modern needs, it has two USB-A plugs and three USB-C plugs in addition to a traditional three-prong outlet. It’s even my daily power adapter at home since it can simultaneously charge two phones, two smart watches, my extra USB power pack and my laptop! I can’t recommend it enough.

When you’re deciding what to bring to Italy, make sure to put it on your list!

By the same token, we always find that our phones are running low on battery after a full day of Waze, TripAdvisor, photography and more. We love this compact external battery pack because it plugs directly into our phones – no cables necessary! We always make sure to bring at least one with us (note: most airlines now require battery packs to be in your carry-on luggage, not your checked bag).

Italy SIM card

Want to use your American cell phone in Italy? It’s easy! As long as your phone is unlocked, just use a paperclip to pop your SIM card out and replace it with this one . We used it in several European countries without issue (make sure to turn roaming ON once it’s in if you want to switch countries).

The card includes 10 GB of data, 1000 texts and 120 minutes of talk time – plenty for a few weeks of travel. By default the card is active for two weeks, but if you plan to be in Europe longer you can just register it online and even purchase top ups! Unlike some cheaper Europe SIM cards, Orange even allows tethering – so you can potentially purchase just one card for your group and then share the pool of data. Check prices here.

Organize your luggage

Make sure to grab a set of packing cubes to stay organized on your trip. Use the biggest one for clothing, the middle size for intimates and jewelry and the smallest to consolidate charging cables and other electronics accessories. Especially if you plan to go to Venice, I strongly recommend that you consider a backpack – between the cobblestones and the bridges, a wheeled suitcase isn’t easy to manage! The good news is that there are lots of excellent backpack options that are spacious, comfortable and still small enough to carry on-board.

There’s no formal dress code in Italy except in houses of worship, where you’re expected to cover your shoulders and usually knees as well. Some restaurants may have a dress code (stated or unstated) just as they do everywhere else.

Tourists in Italy usually dress for comfort, though some (maybe you, since you’re here reading this article) make an effort to step up their style game a bit. As a practical matter, you may find tourists wearing more sensible shoes than locals as smart visitors know that they need to be comfortable for a full day on their feet!

The only thing you absolutely should not wear in Italy is something that’s uncomfortable for you, physically or otherwise. You’re most likely traveling there to explore and have a great time, and you can’t do that if your feet hurt or your clothes feel awkward. If you’re trying not to stand out too much as a tourist, you may want to leave the athletic wear behind. It’s uncommon to see Italians out in the street wearing gym clothes and running shoes unless they’re actually heading to the gym. This video sums it up pretty well.

Italy has numerous climate zones thanks to its range of latitudes and topographies. If you’re visiting the Dolomites in October you’ll definitely want to add a packable puffer jacket and cozy wool socks to the list above. On the other hand, if you’re planning a visit to visit the far south like Sardinia in September or October you can trade the long sleeves and jackets for dresses and even a swim suit! A packable sun hat will be the perfect completer piece.

I found wearing predominantly black, with red lipstick and a nice necklace always went down a treat. Great info, leaving for Italy next week. Been checking the weather there and it looks to be warm. My question is can I wear white capris while the weather is on the warm side? I did not see or hear of white pants, Capri, or white dress. Is white not the color to wear when weather is warm?

It may depend on where you are, but I’d be surprised if you saw white capris at this time of year. I think you’re more likely to see dresses if the temperature has creeped back up. But if you’re more comfortable in white capris, then rock ‘em!

How to Create the Perfect Fall Travel Capsule

The Fall Travel Capsule is my favorite one to create. I am sure it stems from the fact that I grew up in Minnesota and it is my favorite season of all. For me, the fall season is crisp air and cooler temperatures, turning leaves and a warm mug of something delicious.

It is also the perfect time to take a trip. Fall is the shoulder season in many popular travel areas. You will find fewer crowds, lower rates and you get to wear cute fall travel outfits on your trip!

Every trip I take I pack a travel capsule, and this week I put together the perfect packing list of travel clothes for your next adventure, check it out!

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

The basic gist of the travel capsule is that rather than packing an outfit for day 1, an outfit for day 2, an outfit for day 3, etc….

Instead of doing that you pack versatile pieces that mix and match into different outfits. The base of the wardrobe is a neutral color palette. You add a pop of color with scarves, a top, or a statement piece.

How Do You the Perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Fall?

Check the weather forecast.

The first thing you need to do is know the weather where you are going. Fall can be unpredictable and so having the specifics at the time of your trip is important.

Early fall can bring warm weather, and regardless of when you may encounter rain. Knowing the forecast close to the time of the trip will help you to avoid issues while you are traveling!

What Activities will you do?

You will want to research your destination to know what types of activities you will do, as this will impact the key pieces you pack. This article will walk you through how I plan each trip I take!

How Long is Your Trip?

As you know, I pack carry on only. Whether it’s a week trip or 3 weeks, I bring the same amount. The difference is that I plan to do laundry for the longer trips and make a point of researching where it can be done before I arrive.

How do I Follow the 54321 Packing Formula for Fall?

PRO TIP: On your travel days wear an entire outfit from your packing list. This frees up space in your suitcase and makes carry-on travel easier!

5 Tops for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

Layering is the key. I usually bring a couple of long sleeve tops, one merino wool black tee, a turtleneck sweater and a cardigan. In this capsule I chose a long cardigan vest that goes well with the tops. On warmer days it can be your outer layer.

A note on merino wool items: merino wool is an amazing travel item. It is naturally antibacterial so it is naturally odor free. That means you can wear it multiple times before it needs to be washed – perfect for carry on travel! Yes, it is expensive, but in my experience it is worth the investment.

4 Bottoms Pants/Skirts/Dresses for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

For bottoms, I combine pants, skirts and dresses. I don’t really wear as many dresses in the fall, and so don’t need 3 of them. Plus, I took a trip this summer that included 3 separate dresses and honestly felt like I had way too many clothes. So, for this capsule, I am experimenting with pairing back a touch.

With that, this capsule includes black pants, my favorite jeans, black leggings and a midi dress. The dress is cool because you can wear it with the turtleneck sweater and it looks like a skirt.

You could swap out for a sweater dress or midi skirt very easily. Here are some options for inspiration!

3 Pairs of Shoes Your Fall Travel Capsule

I never pack more than three pairs of shoes for any trip. This one I chose Ankle Boots, White Sneakers and wedge ballet flats. I own all these shoes. The Taos sneakers are super supportive and I have literally worn them to walk all day. The ballet flats have a wedge because the super flat ones do not five me enough support.

2 Scarves for your Fall Travel Capsule

Two scarves are included in this travel capsule: 1 blanket scarf and 1 infinity scarf.

2 Jackets for your Fall Travel Capsule

For this capsule, I included a casual jacket that can be used in outfits and a weather-appropriate jacket for outdoors. You could swap the Lightweight suede moto jacket for a denim jacket or a leather jacket. And, because weather in fall is unpredictable, a packable rain jacket or trench coat is important.

The Ultimate Packing List for Europe: Fall Edition

Here’s a not-so-secret fact about us: fall is our favorite time to travel in Europe (and packing for fall in Europe is extra fun, too).

Crunching leaves, changing colors, the wine and olive oil harvests, dissipating crowds, cozy clothes, and cooling temperatures: traveling to Europe during autumn is absolutely fantastic, and you couldn’t ask for a better time to plan a trip.

We’ve spent several fall seasons in Europe, enjoying everything from the bright blue waters of Malta in September to the cozy vibes of Budapest in November , with many destinations in between.

Heading off on an autumn adventure and ready to put together a packing list for Europe in the fall?

We’ve rounded up everything to need to pack for autumn in Europe here–plus some advice on what to wear.

How to Use This Packing List for Visiting Europe in the Fall

At the risk of stating the obvious, Europe is a large and diverse continent.

In other words, if you’re planning a September trip to Sicily , you’ll need a much different packing list than if you’re planning a trip to Norway in November.

You’ll definitely notice some stark variety in my outfits in the photos for this post–all of which were taken in Europe during the fall!

This packing list for Europe in the fall is designed for a traveler who’s visiting Europe in late September, October, or November, and is who’s avoiding destinations far in the north (like Lapland) or at a very high elevation, where much warmer clothes might be needed.

Think strolling through the streets of Paris , wine tasting in Tuscany , or admiring the fall foliage over Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, for example.

Of course, always be sure to carefully check the weather in the destinations you’re planning to visit as your trip gets closer, but this fall packing list for Europe will provide a great jumping-off point for deciding what to bring (and what to leave behind).

Passport — Definitely the most important item on any packing list for Europe in the fall!

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and visiting Europe in autumn is definitely a case of it’s to be better safe than sorry.

Visa (If Needed)  — Though 26 countries in Europe are part of the Schengen Zone that allows many nationalities (including US citizens, Canadians, and Australians) to enter and travel freely between their countries for 90 days for tourism, that still leaves around half of Europe’s countries that are  not  part of this agreement.

Regardless of where you are from, always double-check entrance requirements before showing up at the airport to fly to any European country (or any country at all that isn’t your own, for that matter).

Money  — We recommend bringing two credit cards (one to use, and one to keep as a backup), and two debit cards. Ideally, bring cards with no foreign transaction fees.

We’ve never felt it necessary to obtain currency before arriving (we just withdraw from an ATM when we get there), but you can purchase most currencies in your home country if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Keep in mind that not all countries in Europe are on the Euro, so be sure to double-check what currency you’ll need based on your itinerary !

International Driving Permit — If you are coming from outside the EU and plan to rent a car during your fall trip to Europe, you may need an International Driving Permit to do so!

Italy in particular is well-known for enforcing this requirement.

Be sure to check the rental requirements in any country that you plan to drive in before you arrive!

Camera  — We have been using our  Sony a7R III  for several years now and absolutely  adore  it, but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories! 

Be sure to check the requirements for any particular country that you visit–the United Kingdom, for example, is well-known for using different plugs than most of the continent.

(Not that you should need to worry much about theft from your hotel room during your trip to Europe, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!).

Comfortable Day Bag — We currently use Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable.

Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a Northface Jester backpack for years and loved it as well.

When visiting Europe in the fall, I promise Option B is the best bet! We love this easy-to-pack umbrella and bring it just about everywhere.

They’re incredibly handy and we recommend adding one to your packing list for Europe this fall.

We’ve been carrying ours for years and it never stops coming in handy!

Reusable Water Bottle  — Save both money and plastic during your spring trip to Europe and add a reusable water bottle to your packing list for Europe!  I love this metal one .

Apple Air Tags  — Air Tags are a relatively new addition to our Europe packing list, but we’ve absolutely loved having the extra security when checking out luggage!

If so, you’ll be so glad you brought along a Swiss Army Knife–ours has saved us from a last-minute snack packaging crisis many times!

Student ID  — If you’re a student, you’ll be entitled to lots of discounts on museums and attractions throughout Europe (though note that this is sometimes just for EU residents–be sure to double-check individual attractions before getting your hopes up).

If you’re a student, be sure to add your ID to your autumn packing list for Europe.

Cell Phone  — We spent more than a year traveling without working cell phones, just relying on wifi… and while that’s completely fine, we would never go back.

Consider purchasing an international plan for your cell phone (most carriers offer them), getting an eSIM, or, if you have an unlocked phone, you can just buy a local SIM card once you land in Europe.

You’ll want to structure your personal wardrobe for traveling in Europe based on where you’re going, of course.

A glamorous trip to Paris calls for different clothes than hiking in Ireland or soaking up the last of the year’s warmth in Greece –but if you’re looking for a great all-in-one fall packing list for Europe, this is it!

We like to spend nearly the entire autumn in Europe (especially October, our personal favorite month) these days, and these picks reflect my personal favorite things to wear in Europe in the fall.

Dresses with tights underneath them and a cute pair of boots basically make up my uniform when visiting Europe in the fall–bonus points for sweater dresses.

Think something similar to this one , or something like this for a maxi dress look.

Don’t forget the tights! I love these tights and own several pairs (they hold up forever).

If you’re traveling later in the fall or to a cooler climate, consider adding a pair of cozy fleece tights to your packing list for Europe in the fall.

Simple blouses like this are perfect for most places in the fall in Europe.

Be sure to also bring a sweater or two along–thinner ones are easier to pack and layer, so keep that in mind when shopping. Something like this is a great option.

A Europe packing list for autumn absolutely requires a pair of jeans–I’m obsessed with this pair and wear them everywhere.

If you prefer wearing pants, you might also like to bring an additional pair of jeans–black ones like these are a great way to mix things up.

If you are like me and prefer to wear dresses and skirts more often than not, a cute skirt like this layered with tights and boots is a fashionable and comfortable choice for your fall in Europe packing list.

During autumn in Europe, cute boots rule the streets when it comes to shoes.

I’m currently in love with these boots and wearing them on a near-daily basis.

Something similar to this is also a fabulous option.

September and October in Europe are still a bit early for full-on lined coats in most parts of the continent , though that all changes when November rolls around!

Consider bringing a cute, but lighter option like this along for your trip if it looks like the weather will call for it.

(Though note that in many parts of Europe, citizens dress for the season, not the weather–so if you pass Italian women wearing peacoats when you’re in a sundress in September, don’t be surprised).

Accessories

When it comes to accessorizing for fall in Europe, it’s all about the scarves !

We recommend adding 1-2 on your autumn packing list for Europe, but also keep in mind that scarves make easy, cheap, and lovely souvenirs.

Though they’re far from necessary, I also personally love these cuffs to mix up my look when wearing boots.

Fitted, casual shirts like this and light sweaters like this are both great options for men when packing for Europe in the fall.

Casual slacks or chinos like these are a versatile and easy option for your fall in Europe packing list.

We recommend bringing at least one pair of fitted, dark-wash jeans like these  as well.

Subtle boots like these or classic shoes like these are both good options.

Jeremy is currently wearing these boots and loves them.

Depending on the weather for your trip to Europe, you may not need a heavy jacket at all when visiting Europe in the fall.

Jeremy was comfortable in this jacket all the way through mid-November in Europe last year.

If you want something warmer, consider something a bit thicker–just be sure not to get one that’s too heavy for the season.

Sweaters like this are another great option!

Scarves are both fashionable and comfortable this time of year.

We recommend adding one to your fall packing list for Europe and potentially picking up another one as a souvenir along the way.

You just never know when a long ferry or mountain road might call for some assistance!

Money Belt  — This is up to you: we no longer use one, but if you’re more comfortable having your passports on your person while exploring Europe this fall, you can consider bringing one.

I’ve been using it for more than 6 years now (I’m on my second volume) and absolutely love it.

Basic Medication  — Some people prefer to buy medication for basic headaches, fevers, and stomach aches as needed, but who wants to deal with language barriers when they’re sick?

We’ve never regretted packing our own basic meds.

True, it’s a bit of a pain to carry and not advised in busy areas, but the memories are priceless and the photos you end up with are generally  so  much better than the ones you get by asking a stranger to snap a photo for you!

They’re so tiny you’ll barely notice them when putting together your final European fall packing list, anyway.

It’s true that using a money belt is a bit controversial as you said, but I have to admit that I feel safer and more confident with it when travelling to crowded places. How to pack the Ultimate Fall 2023 Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whether you’re planning an exciting adventure abroad, visiting family in another state, or taking a short staycation nearby – there is one key factor that will make all the difference: having the right pieces in your fall travel capsule wardrobe.

With so many fashion trends (as well as lifestyle/comfort) continually changing, it can be difficult to know what exactly should be included. Stay ahead of the fashion curve this fall 2023 with our guide on how to pack the perfect capsule wardrobe before hitting the road.

Let us show you how denim skirts over 50 are completely versatile must-haves that can help create endless fashionable look combinations fit for any occasion whether casual or dressy. Before starting, make sure you take a look at the weather report, make a list of the activities you will be doing, and create a packing list.  As you put your list together try on the pieces and create different looks so you can take fewer clothes.

With these basic pieces, you’ll be ready for whatever fall has in store and you will have the elements of a perfect travel capsule wardrobe.  With a few core staples, you will have many outfit options. Not having enough or the right closet essentials is the biggest challenge for women who like to travel, especially in the cooler temperatures.

    a. A Classic Trench Coat 

A classic trench coat is a timeless piece that belongs in every capsule travel wardrobe. Its classic style never goes out of fashion, making it a smart investment for any wardrobe. The best part about a trench coat is that it looks amazing on any body type.

    b. A pair of Comfortable Pants or Jeans

Finding the perfect pair of pants or jeans can be a daunting task. We all want comfort, style, and versatility in our denim choices. Luckily, there are options out there for everyone.

Skinny jeans are great for a sleek, modern look paired with a blouse or tunic top. if you are looking to be super current, go for a straight leg or wide leg jean. For those looking for a classic look, boot cut jeans or straight leg jeans are the perfect choice. And for those who love a little extra movement and flow, wide leg jeans are a great option.

But let’s not forget about the edginess that comes with leather pants or the elegance of a good pair of black trousers if you don’t like jeans. With so many choices, it’s easy to find a pair of comfortable jeans that fit our personal style and give us the confidence to conquer the day.  Putting some effort into finding a comfortable pair of pants or jeans is important for a fall and winter capsule wardrobe. 

    c. A Lightweight Dress 

When it comes to effortless style, a lightweight dress is just what you need in your wardrobe. A slip dress, for example, can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Paired with strappy heels and a clutch, it’s perfect for a night out with your girlfriends.

On the other hand, layering a long cardigan dress over it makes for a comfortable yet chic look for running errands or a casual lunch date. It’s always good to have a little black dress waiting in the wings for an unexpected happy hour, or for evening wear.  Investing in a versatile dress is always a good idea, especially since it can be worn year-round with the right accessories.

    d. A Versatile Top 

Having a versatile top is essential for any wardrobe, and a white t-shirt is a great place to start. But why stop there when you can have options? A turtleneck sweater is perfect for chilly days, while a white button-down shirt can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

Autumn Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

Wardrobe basics combine to create stylish and comfortable outfits for a fall vacation

As an avid traveler, I have discovered that a capsule wardrobe for autumn travel, or any other time of year, simplifies packing and and  getting dressed while away.

In fall, I like to combine wardrobe classics: jeans, button-ups and sweaters mixed with trousers and a blazer to create looks that are casual but put together. This is especially true if I am headed to Europe, my favorite fall destination.

I believe a capsule wardrobe can work for anyone — the right combination of pieces allows you to create a maximum number of attractive outfits with less effort. 

Buying clothes with capsule wardrobes in mind also helps me to spend less money — I invest in classic items that don’t go out of style. Hooray, more money for travel!

Choose Your Autumn Color Palette

So, where do we start planning a wardrobe for autumn travel? I always start with a color palette, and I have created four color options to spark our imagination. We each have different color preferences, skin tones, and clothes hanging in our closets. Of the four fall color combos below, are you drawn to a particular one?

Sticking to a color palette allows us to pack less because the items easily mix and match. It also makes it simpler to get dressed — everything goes with everything else. A color palette can start with neutrals and then you have the option to layer in some color. 

Tip: If you want to explore adding color but are nervous about going all in, try incorporating an affordable piece — a plum crewneck sweater, a mustard blouse, or a green scarf. Handbags are a fantastic accent as well but can be more expensive.

For my autumn capsule wardrobe, I chose black, camel, tan and grey, and one of my trousers has a subtle houndstooth pattern. There’s also the blue in my denim, but I think of denim as a neutral; it goes with everything.

After picking my colors, I take a shopping trip to my closet; I am looking for anything I already have in my palette. I try everything on to see what fits and I feel good in. With those pieces as the foundation, I decide what I want and need to buy. I find that approach more fun and less overwhelming than buying a whole new wardrobe for fall.

Shop Your Closet

After my own closet deep dive and found I needed new boots that were both water resistant and stylish, and an affordable wool crewneck sweater, in a neutral color, either oatmeal or grey. I also wanted a double-breasted blazer; there are so many cute ones right now.

I ended up buying this lovely Black Knit Blazer from Loft . It’s great quality for the price and slightly oversized for layering. I also bought a Quince cashmere sweater and these waterproof Nisolo Chelsea Boots . I’ve had to size up a half-size in some Nisolo items but found these were true to size.

What I bought for my autumn capsule wardrobe & trip to Paris

I am listing the 15 or so pieces in our capsule, with recommended options for each. I’ve tried to include a variety of price points and focused on brands I own and like; I also own some of the specific pieces which I am noting as well.

1. Classic denim - straight or trouser style

Cute, comfy and ready for exploring, a classic pair of jeans is ideal in any capsule wardrobe.  The jeans I am wearing in some of the photos are a few years old, by Paige. 

I am currently loving trouser-style jeans with a loose fit and wider cuff. I think they are very flattering. If those aren’t for you, you could go with a straight cut, another classic. But any jeans that you love will work. I tend to prefer a darker wash for fall and don’t wear jeans with rips and holes (personal preference).  

My current favorite denim is by Reformation; I own two trouser-style pairs from last season. A current similar style is the Val 90s Mid Rise Wide Leg in the color Burnside. 

I also really like J. Crew denim; their dark wash is great. For a straight jean, my current favorite is the Vintage Slim Straight in Resin Rinse. 

Everlane also has a terrific variety of styles that are well-priced. Options include wide, curvy, straight, and relaxed, and they come in several washes.

If you want to be able to try on different styles to find what works for you, Madewell is a great option. I own two pairs and really like them. They have many styles in their standalone stores and are also carried in Nordstrom . 

Budget-friendly option: this well-priced pair by Land’s End comes in three denim washes (I like “port indigo”) and sizes 2-18: Women’s Recover High-Rise Wide-Leg Blue Jeans. 

2.Trousers for Autumn (2)

A trouser pant is a foundational piece for a autumn capsule wardrobe so I am including a lot of options in the shopping section below. My fall wardrobe has two pairs, I suggest a dark color for one, it won’t show spots (but pack your Tide pen anyway), and whatever you like for the second pair. You could do another solid or if you like pattern, a houndstooth.

A loose-cut trouser is especially comfy for sightseeing and lots of walking.  Choose a fabric weight depending on the season and destination. I’ve also included two options from Athleta that look sleek but feel like yoga pants. Great for the plane! 

You could also go with a skirt in place of a trouser. Any skirt could work, as long as it goes with your shirts, sweater and a blazer for layering. 

The black trousers I wear in some of the photos are a wool blend by Vince, from several years ago. Pictured above is the Everlane Tencel Way-High Taper Pant in black. And Abercrombie has an affordable trouser with fantastic reviews the A&F Sloane Tailored Pant . It comes in 15 colors and sizes 23-37. 

The Hampshire Ponte Wideleg Pants are another great option for fall travel. They are machine washable; in six colors sizes 0 – 22.

If you want your travel pants to feel like leisure wear, here are two great options from Atheleta. For a flowy style, the Athleta Cosmic Wide Leg Pant.  If you prefer something tapered, the Athleta Endless Pant are fantastic. I bought them in brown. 

Budget-friendly option: the Quince  Stretch Crepe Pleated Wide Leg Pant . I’ve just ordered these to try them out; I’ll update this when they arrive. 

If you would like to add a skirt for fall, I haven’t tried but really like the Washable Silk Skirt by Quince . It’s well-priced and comes in 10 colors. XS to XL.

3. Blazer (my fall capsule wardrobe favorite)

 I love traveling with blazers. They are the perfect capsule wardrobe item because they work with everything: jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. A nice blazer instantly elevates any outfit; one of my favorite ways to wear it is with denim and sneakers or flats as I am here, in Paris. 

For autumn travel, I choose this double-breasted  blazer by Loft because I wanted  the option to layer a sweater underneath on a cool fall day in Paris.  But I still want it to feel tailored. 

Very oversized blazers are in style this fall, but I think they are a bit hard to pull off without looking like you’re wearing your dad’s blazer.

J. Crew has nice blazer options; I have two and am happy with them. For a classic style fit I love the Regent Blazer in Wool Flannel . It comes in sizes 00-24, in classic, petite, and tall and the wool is considered “four season” (it’s fairly lightweight).  The camel color is gorgeous for autumn, and it comes in black and navy. Consider sizing up if you want to layer a shirt and sweater underneath. 

Double-breasted blazers look great buttoned or open. A b udget pick is mentioned above: the Loft  Knit Double-Breasted Blazer. It looks much more expensive than it is.

Boden offers a wide variety of blazers that are well-priced for the quality. Explore Boden blazers. 

And Sézane has lovely blazers at a moderate price point in lots of gorgeous colors.  If you like a double-breasted blazer consider either the Christie Jacket or Michele Jacket, both gorgeous. The latter has front patch pockets, a bit more casual.

For a classic single-breasted option the Ralph (black only) or the Romane for a sleek navy pinstripe.

4. A wool crewneck sweater (or cardigan)

I’ve included a crewneck sweater for fall because it’s an ideal style to layer under a blazer (as I did in the photo above). You could also do this with a v-neck sweater, depending on your preference. 

I recently purchased this Quince cashmere crewneck for my own fall travels. Yes, cashmere can be affordable (this one if $50), and it’s both warm and lightweight, making it ideal for travel. 

Affordable Cashmere Sweaters for Fall

Budget pick : the Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck from Quince comes in 17 colors and is very soft and light, yet warm. After wearing it in Paris, I highly recommend it. They also have cashmere v-neck sweaters.

For just slightly more ($75) Naadam offers a similar sweater: the Essential Cashmere Sweater. I’ve just ordered my first one to see how it compares to Quince. New York Times Wirecutter did a review of best cashmere sweaters and Naadam is their pick.  I understand it is slightly thicker and not quite as long as the Quince option. Note these run small so they advise sizing up. 

Everlane has nice quality  Cashmere Classic Crew Sweater in XXS-XXXL but at a higher price point (in six colors).

For inclusive sizing, and if you want to try it on in store, J. Crew has a nice selection of crewneck cashmere sweaters in sizes XXX-Small to 3X: Cashmere Classic Fit Crewneck . 

If you don’t want wool, Banana Republic Factory has a nice blend option in both neutrals, and fun fall colors: the Volume Sleeve Sweater.

5. Long-Sleeved Button-Up (2)

From my perspective, buttoned up in my favorite oxford shirts,  button-up shirts are capsule wardrobe staples, in fall, and the rest of the year. They are versatile and ideal for layering as the weather turns cool. Wear it on a warmer day with jeans and your sleeves rolled up, or layered under a crewneck sweater and your blazer. You can also wear them open over a tank, on a nice day. 

Pictured here is the Banana Republic Oversized Button-Up Shirt, which I wear in my capsule. I also love Boden’s classic cotton  which I have in blue. After trying several brands last spring, it came out as the winner. COS has a slightly oversized version for under $100: COS Oversized Long-Sleeve Shirt.  

For a budget pick, Quince has a lovely Organic Cotton Poplin Shirt in white, black and a blue stripe.

6. A turtleneck

A turtleneck is ideal to wear with jeans or trousers, or to layer under a blazer. For fall I like something that is thin enough to layer under my blazer. And if you are adding color to your autumn capsule, this is an ideal piece to do it with! 

Banana Republic has a turtleneck sweater in multiple colors that is currently under $50, the Merino Wool Turtleneck . It comes in a cream and dark brown both ideal for a neutral palette, but if you want to add a hit of color, look at the gorgeous red brick or pretty azure blue. I have it in the cream and the merino wool is quite soft and has a nice drape to it. It’s also “responsible wool” certified. 

If you prefer a non-wool turtleneck, the Soft Luxe Turtleneck Shirt comes in six colors, XXS-XL. 

J. Crew also has a thin turtleneck that’s great for layering, the Women’s Tissue Turtleneck . 

7. A scarf/poncho

A wool wrap or poncho will be one of your favorite things. I have them in black and oatmeal and bring them on every trip. It’s a cozy layer on the plane and an ideal accent to on a cool evening. Some poncho styles allow you to wear it as a scarf as well.

For a luxe poncho consider the NAADAM Cashmere Ribbed Collar Open Front Poncho in black. It also comes in a gorgeous burnt orange color called cider, and three other muted shades. (Currently out of stock. I’ll update when they are available again)

I just ordered my first cashmere sweater from NAADAM, a company that specializes in affordable and sustainable cashmere . I will add more about it when it arrives and compare it to Quince.  

9. Tee Shirts

T-shirts are a nice capsule basic, yearround. I always wear one on the plane, under other layers in case it’s warm. Two tees are plenty for a fall capsule, unless it will be warm and you don’t have access to laundry; then I’d add a third.  I chose versatile white, a black and a striped, but colors depend on your capsule colors. 

Most of us have t-shirts in out wardrobe. If you need a new one, my striped tee is by Boden. I also have t-shirts by Vince, Madewell, Banana Republic and so on. I am linking a few options below. 

And I am wearing the 

Reformation makes a soft and well-priced classic: Perfect Vintage T. This tee is a relaxed fit.

Boden has a fabulous Short-Sleeved Breton T as does Amour Vert: Berkeley Dream Knit Tee.

In Motion Seamless Tank by Athleta is similar to mine which I bought a few years ago. 

8. Trench Coat

Whether you pack a trench coat or a wool coat in your fall wardrobe depends on where you are going and when. Amsterdam in mid-September will differ greatly from London in November. 

If you don’t already own a trench coat this might be the piece you invest in.  A classic trench is practical, versatile, and timeless — a true wardrobe staple.

My coat is the Scott Trench from Sézane ; it’s a bit of an investment but the quality is fantastic. I compared it to many other options before I made the purchase. 

You can find this classic style at a variety of retailers. Choose between single or double-breasted. As for color, tan is a classic; I also love black, navy, and olive green. 

I love this affordable option by Quince, the Comfort Stretch Trench Coat. It’s available in classic tan and lovely navy.

If you like a black trench — I think they are so chic — Everlane’s Cotton Modern Trench comes in black as well as tan and olive.

Of course, if you want to splurge on the ultimate investment piece, there’s the Burberry classic, the Kensington Heritage Trench.

Shoes for An Autumn Capsule Wardrobe

9. loafers (my favorite shoe for fall).

Loafers are the MVP of my autumn capsule wardrobe for travel. Whenever I put on a nice pair of loafers, I feel more put together, so I always pack black loafers for a fall trip to Europe.

I like a classic style but chunky loafers are also trendy right now. Penny loafers are also a nice alternative.

Sam Edelman makes a nice pair of classic loafers, the Loraine , found at Nordstrom and other retailers and available in many colors. They closely resemble the gorgeous Gucci classic, the Jordaan.

For a penny loafer, Cole Haan has a nice option this fall: the   Lux Pinch Penny Loafer . And this similar pair from & Other Stories, the Leather Penny Loafer comes in black and brown. Full sizes only. 

I am loving Sézane’s André Loafers ; they come  in patent black and six other colors.

10. Boots for Fall Travel (waterproof options)

Here’s what I think about waterproof boots. If I am traveling in fall, it might rain. If I am on a vacation that will involve a lot of walking around, I want my feet to stay comfortable and dry. So why would I risk it with boots that aren’t at least water-resistant? Unless you’re certain it won’t rain on your vacation, or maybe you have other rain-friendly footwear to bring, I suggest boots that can get wet and keep you dry. Those are the options I am including here.

I just ordered the  Eva Everyday Chelsea Boot from Nisolo. They have waterproof uppers with a rubber sole and come in six colors (black and brandy are shown above). As soon as they arrive, I will wear them in the rain and update this with my thoughts. I own another pair of shoes from Nisolo, which I like, the Flatform Sandal. Nisolo tends to run small, so I size up a half-size, although Nisolo tells me this boot runs true to size. 

Another waterproof ankle boot is available by Toms, the Dakota Water Resistant Boot . It’s a classic style at a great price in six colors. I own Tom’s classic cotton slip-ons and like them as a company.  

Splurge option: Aquatalia is a fantastic Italian brand with beautifully made waterproof boots. They are an investment but I found mine at Nordstrom Rack for half price. You can explore options here: or the full offering at Aquatalia . 

11. Sneakers for Autumn

Any sneakers will do for a capsule wardrobe, and don’t worry about being under-dressed. Even in Paris, women wear comfy running shoes to elegantly speed along the cobblestones.

I love my Allbirds wool sneakers for fall travel. They are lightweight and comfy. Pictured above are the Esplar Canvas Sneakers by Veja, a French brand widely available in the U.S. They also come in leather a more practical choice for fall as they are easy to clean.  Explore the many cute Veja options here: Shopbop Veja . 

Cariuma is another brand I’ve recently discovered. I tried on my sister’s pair, the IBI in Sand Knit. They are ultra-lightweight, great for travel, and really cute and comfy. I plan to order my own pair.  They are ethically and sustainably made and if you have any issues with your feet, they easily accommodate orthotics.

And Rothy’s Lace-Up Sneaker in off-white which they call “blonde” is another cute option. It would go with everything and not show dirt as much as white (but they are washable). I size up a half size in Rothy’s flats but these run true to size.

12. Accessories

Accessories are one way to add color and variety to your autumn capsule wardrobe. I always travel with scarves and chose a wool plaid for fall.

Have you considered your belt as an option for adding color? I am seeing many brightly colored belts and love the idea of using them as an accent. I haven’t taken the plunge, but would love one. The belt pictured is the   Artemis by Sézane. It comes in neutrals and several gorgeous colors, including a yellow and lilac that would be lovely for fall.  The fact it doesn’t have holes makes it versatile; it can be worn higher or lower on your waist. Try belting it over a button-up shirt.

Capsule Wardrobe for Fall Travel

A good capsule wardrobe will work equally well for the day and evening. Here are three outfit combinations ideal for an evening out. Just slightly elevated from our daytime outfits, I appreciate having something to change into after sightseeing.  When I have space I like to bring a lightweight blouse exclusively for the evening that works with my nicer trousers. That way, I know I will always have something to change into for dinner.

Tote Bag for an Autumn Wardrobe

I recently invested in a new tote bag, the Classic Structured Leather Tote by Cuyana. I absolutely love it. I use it most days and it’s already come with me on trips to California and Canada. Note that the one I bought is a traditional tote style with an open top. They also have gorgeous zippered totes, if you want something specifically for travel: Classic Leather Zipper Tote.  

For a budget-friendly but still luxe option, I like the Quince Italian Leather Tote. 

Sustainable Clothing Brands for Capsule Wardrobes

Many of the brands listed here make sustainable production a priority. Athleta, Boden, Sézane, Reformation, and Veja are all certified B Corps. To earn B certification a business must meet high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits to sustainability and  supply chain practices.

Everlane, a great source for elevated basics, gets high marks for sustainability in many areas, but isn’t B Corp Certified. You will find the name of the factory a piece was made in, in each product listing when you click on “More detail”.  Likewise, Quince isn’t B Corp Certified but sources sustainable materials like organic cotton and linen, Mulberry silk, and cashmere. Quince is transparent about its partner factories , including wages and working conditions, and is BSCI and Bluesign® certified.

The bigger brands mentioned here, such as J. Crew and Banana Republic are making strides toward sustainability but have a long way to go. Some of their products use sustainable materials.

Chic & Easy European Travel Packing List

Inspired by a question from long-time reader Jen in Pittsburgh (hi!), I went down a (fun) rabbit hole of searching for the perfect easy-but-chic outfits for travel. She was asking what to pack for Barcelona in late winter, and while that seems a little specific, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the packing list I was pulling together would actually apply to many destinations and seasons. (And it inspired this outfit I recently covered , too!)

What To Pack For A Trip To Europe: My Outfit Approach

The goal when I’m traveling to Europe is always to look chic and cool, to be comfy, and to look decidedly NOT like a standout tourist. And unless I’m heading to the beaches and islands or the very northern parts, I’m probably gonna bring a similar wardrobe to a variety of locales. For my style, that includes versatile pieces that layer well, can be easily dressed up or down, and have a classic, slightly sporty vibe.

While browsing some favorite sites for pieces to include in an actual list, I kept running across inspiring outfits. It hit me that this is probably a great way to approach packing lists from now on. Start with some solid style inspiration and then break down the pieces that you either already own or need to add to your collection to complete the looks. So, here’s the inspiration I started with!

My takeaways from my travel inspiration board were this:

• classic structured jackets to layer
• easy pants that still look polished
• comfy but stylish shoes
• a versatile button down (wear it buttoned up or halfway unbuttoned)
• timeless accessories to top it all off

Of course, it’s hard not to try to solve all the world’s packing list problems every time I come out with one of these articles, but the key is to find those main problem-solving pieces and then you can fill in with your favorite additional items…like a favorite black tee or your everyday gold necklace and earrings.

Chic & Easy Outfit Inspo For Your Next European Vacation

I feel most successful with my outfits for travel when I don’t try to bring the trendy pieces I own. Those are fun to try out each season, but usually they’re more difficult to style and not as versatile.

I like that these pieces are all pretty classic. I feel confident they’d take me through many years and that they feel chic but not fussy (that’s always my goal.)

One thing I would add to this list is a gorgeous scarf or wrap. My fav is a lightweight cashmere poncho-style I can wear mostly as a scarf but with the option to wear as a wrap if needed. This is another gorgeous option here .

1 | Everlane The Dream Pants

These Everlane dream pants are fabulous and would be so easy to pack. They are substantial and won’t wrinkle but are still super-comfy. They are versatile and just one of those forever pieces….Plus, they have pockets! TTS. Wearing a S.

2 | J.Crew Cashmere Classic Fit Crewneck

J.Crew makes some of our team’s favorite cashmere and it often goes on sale. These sweaters are light but warm pieces perfect for packing. TTS. Perhaps size up if you know you’ll layer underneath.

3 | Everlane Silky Cotton Relaxed Shirt

I love a classic pinstripe mixed with black pants and shoes, and the trench coat would be the perfect topper over this Everlane button-up. Classic but not boring!

4 | Nordstrom Cashmere Turtleneck

Another team fav in the cashmere category, Nordstrom’s cashmere turtleneck is a closet staple. Soft and lightweight, but also warm, it’s great for layering. Shana likes to wear these silk camis underneath as a layering option.

5 | Everlane The Easy Pant

I have the shorts version of these easy pants from last summer, and the fabric and fit are perfection. TTS and a comfy, but structured elastic waistband that doesn’t bend or fold over. I can’t wait to try these, and I’m hoping they’ll continue to offer more colors.

6 | J.Crew Leather Belt

I adore the belt over the layering jacket in the collage above. This one is similar, and again, classic! You could belt the pinstriped top, too. Being shorter waisted I sometimes have trouble with this accessory, but it looks so great I want to keep attempting it. I think sticking with a bit thinner belt (ie. not any thicker than this one I’ve linked) can be helpful in making it a success.

7 | Everlane Day Glove Flat

Shana has blogged about the Everlane Day Glove flats for years as her favorite go-to flat she could walk all day in.

8 | Everlane Italian Leather Chelsea Boot

I’ve had these Everlane Chelsea boots for a couple of weeks now, and they are so great. The gum sole is a fantastic detail, making the shoes look lighter, and it’s cushiony, too. The fit, height and overall look of these is what I’ve been searching for forever. TTS and a really lovely shoe. (Also in my forever closet .)

9 | Re/Done Stovepipe Black Jean in Comfort Stretch **

I’m not someone that goes anywhere without jeans, but sometimes black jeans can be more versatile than blue denim. I adore these Re/Done Stovepipe jeans and have linked a style in comfort stretch vs my rigid denim, thinking that would be comfier for travel. (I had to go up one size.)

10 | Madewell Oversized Shopper Bag

Madewell’s oversized shopper is structured and chic — not too giant but big enough to carry what you need everyday. The shape and the front phone/mask pocket are what have me ordering it to try. Madewell bags are the best and so well-made. I’d also probably bring a cute classic crossbody (love the option for interchangeable straps). The tote is also available at Nordstrom .

11 | Emerson Fry Layering Jacket **

I have and adore this Emerson Fry wool jacket because it’s warm and stylish, but the poncho/wide + short sleeve style makes it perfect over bulky sweaters or other jackets. I love a layered look but sleeve widths don’t always allow for that. This does! But, right now it’s a bit low in stock. It comes in a gray, too, here or this chic puffer style or this option also caught my eye.

12 | J.Crew Factory Classic Trench

There are few jackets more classic, stylish, or versatile than the trench coat. Find a classic one you love and it will also become a forever closet piece. This one from J.Crew Factory gets good reviews, is a really timeless style, and is a reasonable price, too. It’s been tricky to find any well-stocked trench coats right now. If money is no object, then you simply can’t beat the Burberry Kensington trench , especially to dance around in on a European vacation, but if you can find this Lauren Ralph Lauren option in your size, it’s a stunningly close alternative.

13 | Quay All In 56mm Aviator

A gorgeous pair of sunglasses really tops off a look and I love these from Quay at Nordstrom. I like the brown tortoise to compliment the tones in the belt and trench.

14 | Tretorn Nylite Plus Sneakers

Please dear world of travelers, can we move away from the running-shoe-worn-with-everything phase? I believe in being diplomatic in what I cover here and we never want to say “you must do this or you mustn’t do that”, but honestly one thing that stands out so much when traveling is seeing workout shoes worn with everything. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but…a classic tennis style sneaker, an Adidas Superstar , a Tretorn (like these), an Air Force 1 , a P448 , a Golden Goose …are all going to look way less touristy-American and way more fashion-forward than the literal sneakers you workout in. Sorry sorry…rant over but haha gosh it’s a passion-project of mine 😂

What fliers need to know about new refund rules for airlines

Starting in about six months, u.s. airlines will have to offer customers cash refunds before vouchers.

New federal rules for airlines will go into effect later this year, giving travelers a better picture of the full cost of flights before they book — and getting them an easier refund if things go awry.

After a process that lasted more than a year, the Biden administration announced the rules on passenger protections Wednesday.

“This is a big day for America’s flying public,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a news conference at Reagan National Airport.

While the trade group Airlines for America said its members “abide by — and frequently exceed — DOT regulations regarding consumer protections,” consumer advocates praised the administration’s move.

“These rules are not only critical but also common sense,” said William McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, who spoke at Wednesday’s event.

Most new rules go into effect in the fall

At the event Wednesday, Buttigieg said that “the bulk of these protections” will go into effect in about six months. Others will start in a year.

That means refund rules that get customers automatic cash refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change flights won’t be in place during the busy summer travel season. But they should be set in time for the Thanksgiving and winter holiday season rush.

Buttigieg said that the department expects airlines to take some time to develop the processes to return cash to travelers, but added that he doesn’t want them to drag their feet.

“They don’t have to wait the number of months that it’ll technically take for this to go into effect,” Buttigieg said Wednesday. “They could and should be doing this right now.”

You should get refunds without having to ask

Instead of first offering a voucher or credit, airlines “must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops,” the Transportation Department says. The refunds need to be issued within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days when bought through other methods.

However a traveler originally paid is the way the refund needs to be issued, the rule says, whether that’s by credit card or airline miles . Other types of compensation are allowed only if a passenger chooses one of those alternatives.

“No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize that they were entitled to cash,” Buttigieg said.

You can still choose to be rebooked

If travelers’ flights have been canceled or significantly changed, they can still continue with their trip. Passengers are only eligible for a refund if they have declined to accept alternative transportation.

Airlines will have to pay for delayed bags and broken WiFi

There are many ways for a trip to go awry, and the new rules cover more than just a late or canceled flight.

If a checked bag isn’t delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving at the gate, or within 15 to 30 hours of an international flight arriving, depending on how long that flight is, passengers will be entitled to a refund of their checked-bag fee. They will need to file a mishandled baggage report.

Refunds will also be given if passengers pay for a service such as WiFi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment and the airline fails to provide.

‘Significant’ changes will be the same for all airlines

Automatic cash refunds are due to passengers if their flight experiences a “significant change.” But what does that mean? Previously, the definition could vary from airline to airline.

The new rules provide some consistency. A change is considered significant if a departure or arrival is different by more than three hours for domestic flights or six hours for international trips.

Other changes considered significant: the departure or arrival is from a different airport; there are more connections; passengers are downgraded to a lower class; or service or flights are on planes that are less accessible for a person with a disability.

No more hidden fees for bags and seat selection

The rule on extra fees — what the Biden administration refers to as “surprise junk fees in air travel” — will require airlines and online travel booking sites to disclose up front the fees for a checked bag, carry-on bag, reservation change and reservation cancellation. Those fees must be clearly noted and not shown through a hyperlink, the rule says.

Consumers must also be informed that they don’t have to pay for a seat assignment to travel and that a seat will be provided without an additional price.

“Healthy competition requires that, as a consumer, you comparison shop, which means knowing the real price of a trip before and not after you buy,” Buttigieg said. “Airlines will now be required to show you these costs up front, so you have all the information you need to decide what travel option is best for you.”

Travelers can either search without providing their personal information to see standard fees or, after entering their information, see more tailored fees that might apply given their military status, frequent-flier membership or credit card use.

“The final rule puts an end to the bait-and-switch tactics some airlines use to disguise the true cost of discounted flights,” the Transportation Department said in a news release. “Prior to the rule, some airlines were offering deceptive discounts that consumers may have believed applied to the full fare that was being advertised but only applied to a small portion of the ticket price.”

You will still have to report complaints

Buttigieg said the main way for the department to find out about a violation of the rules is when people submit complaints through the site flightrights.gov . But he said he hopes that by making refunds automatic, there will be less need for complaints — and more flexibility for employees to perform audits or spot-checks of airline compliance.

Europe-style compensation is still not in the rules

Some travelers heading to or from Europe who experience delays under certain circumstances are entitled to compensation worth more than $600. That kind of system does not exist for domestic flights in the United States, but Buttigieg said it is on the agenda.

“On compensation, we continue to develop that — and to be clear, with this rule on the books, that does not stop or slow the progress that we’re driving in terms of a compensation rule,” he said.
